00:31This time, a little forgotten hidden gem of a show.
00:34Jeff, you have any idea what this show could be?
00:38So, first thing that comes to mind is we're either talking about Pimp My Ride,
00:42we're talking about Single Doubt, or Room Raiders.
00:47I know you definitely remember that one.
00:49I do remember Room Raiders. In fact, I kind of still live in fear that if I leave the house one day,
00:55that I'm going to come back and they're going to be like,
00:57yeah, we had three random-ass girls walk through and judge you as a person based on what you have in there.
01:04Nightmare.
01:05Really? Because you'll be like, that's the one day!
01:07That's the one day I left everything out and all my worst secrets are out there.
01:12And now they're just on national TV being like, what is this?
01:16Yeah.
01:17Oh my god, why does he have this thing?
01:20And then we're behind it.
01:21Be like, what are you—look at this man-child.
01:23I'm trying to look around in my room and see what would the most embarrassing thing be.
01:27Probably all the action figures hung up on the wall in the closet,
01:31or just a bunch of Disney plushes.
01:34Mickey, Goofy, I got Nickelodeon ones.
01:37I got Woody over there, Hulk Hogan.
01:40Luckily, this is the year 2020 and that was like 2003.
01:44Right.
01:45So people are like more like, oh, that's cool,
01:47as opposed to back then where it's just like, oh god, gotta hide all this stuff.
01:52What a loser!
01:54I can't believe he has anything remotely fun.
01:58But it's not Room Raiders.
02:01It's not Next.
02:02It's not Pimp My Ride.
02:04This show was a staple of what you would come home from school to watch.
02:09This was MTV Say What karaoke.
02:13I remember this one.
02:15And the reason I wanted to talk about it was,
02:18well, I remember this show having a lot of random guest judges on.
02:24And one time it had Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island as one of the guest judges,
02:30like 30 years past when she would have been an MTV type person.
02:34What?
02:35Yeah.
02:36So I was kind of like, how much of this show could I still find out there?
02:40And is there any kind of memory that people have for this show?
02:44And I don't think there was enough that I couldn't go in and help them out.
02:51Well, I will just say if there's anything about it to find out there,
02:54you're the one that's going to find it.
02:56For me, I definitely remember the show.
02:59I don't exactly remember how it went or just how the whole game and how the show was played.
03:06So I'm pretty curious to dive into this today.
03:08Well, you're in luck because I'm going to explain to you and the audience
03:13how MTV Say What Karaoke was done.
03:17Direct from SoCal Central, it's MTV Say What Karaoke,
03:20the hottest show on TV for some serious tongue accents.
03:24It's all coming up on today's Say What Karaoke.
03:27And there were a few different iterations of this thing.
03:30There's the late 90s version, the early 2000s version,
03:33and then they tried to bring it back in like 2006, 2007.
03:38Really?
03:39Yeah, and each time they changed the format a little bit,
03:42changed the host, obviously, but there was still the same type of wannabes.
03:49I think I kind of remember the host of this.
03:51It was one of the guys.
03:54It wasn't Matt Lauer. He was the news guy.
03:56It was one of the other dudes.
03:59Gosh, I don't even remember his name,
04:01but he was one of the like staple MTV personalities.
04:06I think who you're thinking of is Dave Holmes.
04:10Exactly.
04:11Who came in second to Jesse Camp.
04:14You remember the guy who won the wannabe VJ contest?
04:18He looked like a homeless bum.
04:20I don't remember that at all, but if that were to be a thing now,
04:23I would have to throw my name in the hat.

04:29on how you feel about our host, Dave Holmes.

04:38He gets an annoying introduction right off the bat.

04:46but today he's hoping to be a winner.

04:55There's two karaoke virgins from Eastern Thessalania.
04:57One can flip and one can vomit on cue.
05:00Oh, gosh.
05:02So that is your host, Dave Holmes,
05:04for the first iteration of Say What Karaoke.
05:07What would you take from his approach?
05:11To me, it seems like this was probably one of his first MTV gigs.
05:15He was kind of just tossed out into it.
05:16He's reading off cards.
05:18There's no teleprompter or anything like that for him.
05:22It's kind of like, hey, go out there and make this stuff fun.
05:26So, I mean, I got a feeling he's not getting much direction.
05:31He's making the most of it.
05:32And then sometimes you'd have other hosts.
05:35Do you remember Matt Pinfield?
05:38Matt Pinfield? You know what? I don't think I do.
05:41Well, let's just say this is what I would think
05:44if Vic Mackie became a hard rock DJ.
05:48Should I remember this guy?
05:50You should, because he was intense.
05:52And at the end of this, you may remember the Limp Bizkit album,
05:56where if you left the album going on a little too long,
05:59Matt Pinfield comes on and starts ranting and raving at you.
06:03Wait, I think, you know what? I think now it's starting to come to mind.
06:06I think I might know who you're talking about here.
06:09He has his own little Lex Luger, Christian Bale meltdown.

07:09And then finally MTV Say What? karaoke would have a guest host.
07:13I remember this. I know Mark McGrath,
07:16but I remember this other guy here.
07:26When it's over. I don't care what people say. Mark McGrath is cool.
07:30Oh, he has swag. Who is this other guy? I remember him.
07:33I thought he was on The Real World or something.
07:36Sway? No, that's not Sway.
07:41I think I think if Sway heard you say that he might smack both of us.
07:46That's a bootleg Cisco. Yep. Yeah, I remember him from somewhere.
07:50Okay, so this is the same same name for the show,
07:54but this is just a different year for it.
07:57So what occasionally would happen is they'd leave the regular studio
08:01and then if you had an MTV spring break, which we covered or,
08:05you know, they went up to the mountains for a ski lodge or something.
08:09You get these people out there and you're like, all right kids come here.
08:12We're going to do a live Say What? karaoke.
08:15So essentially you would just take probably college co-eds,
08:21bring them up on a stage and let them sing along with their favorite tracks
08:24like they would do at a bar,
08:26but we're not going to let them just embarrass themselves in front of their friends.
08:29We're going to let them do it on national television is what you're saying.
08:31Absolutely. All right. What I like about this stuff too is honestly,
08:36it felt like there was a new episode and like continued tournaments all the time with this stuff.
08:41So you'd come in you'd be like, oh, yes, it keeps going.
08:44It's like a live sport. And now it is.
08:47It's like like we said in the MTV spring break.
08:49It's like they don't do anything like this. There's not constant new programming.
08:55Yeah, it's a lot of just ridiculousness over and over and over again,
08:59which I like but come on. Where's where's the stuff like this?
09:03And you know what? It doesn't even have to be super amazing type programming.
09:07In fact, one of the themes this day was Sugar Ray is in the house.
09:12It's Sugar Ray Day. It's Sugar Ray Day. I'm in that's that's my kind of day.
09:19Jeff didn't report into work today. He said it's Sugar Ray Day and that's part of his religion.
09:26It's not on the schedule. It's like a approved day off.
09:29But what do I mean? What are we going to say to him?
09:31We want to fend the guy. Am I supposed to buy him something at Sugar Ray Day?
09:36I don't know. Go to the UCD store. They got a copy of floored for like three bucks.
09:40Boom. Done. So for some reason,
09:43I definitely remember some sort of like spring break version of this show.
09:48That sticks in my mind more than any, you know, typical MTV,
09:53New York looking out the glass window at all the people kind of thing.
09:56Is that is that right or wrong? That would probably be about the time you started watching the show.
10:02Then they started trying to bring it back
10:06and it became more of a enclosed CRL studios hosted by somebody very familiar.
10:15I don't know if you might recognize them or not.
10:19Live weekly finals. I'm Stephen Hill along with the beautiful Danielle Fishel.
10:24Yeah, I know her. It's Topanga.
10:30Who the hell is this OC looking guy? I think he was part of the OC.
10:35Well, there you go. That's what sounds like. Who is this guy?
10:38Stephen Hill was. So wait a minute.
10:44Was she was Topanga brought in as like a full-time host or was she there kind of as,
10:48hey, you're in town. Do you want to help co-host this show for the day?
10:53Topanga Danielle Fishel was actually the host at that time.
10:58This is post Boy Meets World. I think she then went on to like Pants Off Dance Off.
11:03If you remember that show. I kind of do.
11:05I don't remember the premise or anything, but the name I do.
11:08Stephen Hill was a cast member on the 12th season of MTV Real World.
11:15Huh? Whoa. In the first episode, he met fellow cast mates,
11:19Byrne and Trishel Canetella. You remember Trishel?
11:24She was on all these different shows. Yeah, I think so. That's a name that I definitely recall.
11:28I can't tell you what she looked like or but I might be able to pick her up out of a lineup.
11:33Yeah, she hooked up with The Miz on these shows.
11:37And yeah. Oh, hey, this guy's also in the Drake and Josh show and Drake and Josh go Hollywood.
11:44Well, there you go. Probably just playing the role of Stephen Hill.
11:48So how many different hosts did this show have?
11:50Well, there were three different iterations of it.
11:52So there were three different hosts and then obviously guest hosts.
11:56Right. And unfortunately, it's hard to do research on all this stuff
12:01because they don't catalog these as a regular TV type shows.
12:05So you're kind of like, oh, that's interesting. Can I find that? Nope, no archive whatsoever.
12:10So two things real quick. Does MTV have their own streaming app?
12:15They do. Okay. And two. Well, it's part of Paramount Plus.
12:19Okay, gotcha. So I was going to say, why not have this entire back catalog on there
12:26for people to go back and be like, that was my show.
12:29I'm going to go back in time and watch that whole season kind of thing.
12:32Like, why wouldn't they do that? I think the case is, is music copyright laws.
12:37So they'd have to re-go back and maybe work with that license.
12:41And also they just don't think anyone cares.
12:44And I know there's like the YouTube channel called like MTV Rewind, MTV Retro,
12:48and they'll post clips from shows like Punk'd and Room Raiders and things like that,
12:54but never full episodes. Huh. So it's very hard.
12:59And I was trying so, so hard and I was going on every site I know of to find this one episode
13:05where the WWF superstars show up. On Say What Karaoke?
13:11Yes. No. And apparently friggin' Draws goes on there and sings Livin' La Vida Loca.
13:19Oh my God. I guess Road Dogg does Cowboy or American Badass or something like that.
13:26Of course. And I think they said D'Lo Brown was the other contestant who I think won,
13:32if I read it correctly. D'Lo beat out Draws doing Livin' La Vida Loca.
13:37What? So I think Danielle Fischel and Stephen Hill had some chemistry,
13:41but I wouldn't tell Corey Matthews this happened.
13:44Whoever wins today will not only take home a thousand bucks,
13:48but they will also perform in our season finals for a shot at ten grand!
13:53Bad Stephen. Dude, he is just trying to make his move.
13:56He's like, dude, this is Topanga. I'm in. And she's like, I'm trying to work here, dude.
14:03So before American Idol became popular,
14:06I know you were talking about the type of people you'd expect to be on this show.
14:10Can you make a guess of the type of people who are on this show?
14:14Just think of the one friend you have
14:16that's most likely to make a complete ass out of themselves at any given time.
14:21Probably the most delusional of delusional people, right?

15:16I wonder what her current thoughts are on the whole Alex Rodriguez divorce
15:20and then Bennifer becoming a thing again.
15:23We got to find this girl and ask her these hard-hitting questions.

16:09Now, here's another one who probably became somebody's insufferable mom.
16:14In fact, even then, I think her friends secretly hate her and put her up to this.
16:19I keep on falling in, in and out of love.
16:28You know, her friends are just trying to hype her up.
16:30Like, no girl, trust me. Like, it's great.
16:33You sound so good. And it wasn't terrible,
16:37but it's not like, you know, they're just like, oh, we're going to get you on TV.
16:42This is going to be great.
16:43And then they're in the background like, that could have been me.
16:47And this bitch is just going to talk about it for the next month and a half.
16:51Everyone at school is going to ask her a question.
16:53She's going to go into a way too detailed response about it.
16:57And we got to hear the same story six times a week.

23:08but you also have your wannabe pop singers. The worst kind of infestation.

23:35Look, these girls at least went the extra mile and had the like matching choreography.
23:41Yeah, and this type of girl totally idolizes Mandy Moore.

23:54All right. I remember her doing Alicia Keys. That's her.
23:59Well, she chose Jessica Simpson instead because that's a little bit more fun.

25:41And then you like record it and she wants to kill you for the rest of the night.
25:45Oh, yeah. Now these guys killed it. Say what? Karaoke.
25:56Uh-huh. You got it.
26:01You got to give them a little bit respect if they actually put in the good dance moves
26:04and choreography. I mean, they're not very great singers,
26:08but it's still cool to see. Speaking of someone who is not considered a great singer,
26:14even though when she comes up on my iPod, I still kind of love a lot of her songs.
26:18Oh, here's Ashley Simpson throwing a little shade at Britney Spears.
26:24I thought it was good. You actually you took a song and you like made it like your song.
26:29You actually sounded like a thousand times better than her.
26:31So I'm going to give you an A.

26:40What is happening to this guy? Dave Holmes is peak 1999.
26:47Okay, every time you see he's got new highlights
26:51and he's like, he looks like he looks like he's like the guy who wants to be in a boy band,
26:56but he was never going to be in a boy band,
26:58but he wants all the style and all the looks right.
27:01But then you're like, yeah, that might work for the boy bander.
27:04But to you, I mean, I'm kind of envious that he had this job,
27:12honestly, but he just looks a little bit too old for MTV.

27:22but sometimes you need a professional in there that can handle a crowd like this.
27:26So you try to do the best with what you have
27:28or else you're stuck with the homeless VJ again.
