00:00DZ, journalism just put up another awesome effort in the Kentucky Derby.
00:04I mean, he did nothing wrong.
00:05He got a nice trip.
00:06He moved to the lead early.
00:07He just couldn't hold off a horse who I think you called on this race
00:11maybe the best horse in the field, Sovereignty, who ended up winning that.
00:15So, I mean, journalism right back.
00:17I love as a horse racing fan that he's coming back.
00:19He's going to be really tough to beat if he shows back up with that same type of effort.
00:24Oh, yeah.
00:24I mean, look, if he runs back to his Kentucky Derby race, he's going to win.
00:28I mean, there's just no way around that.
00:30Somebody needs to jump up and run an astronomical race in order to beat his race in the Derby.
00:36The question is, does he run that race again coming back in two weeks?
00:40Kind of like an NBA team on a back-to-back, right?
00:43Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:45Similarly, Mike McCarthy does have great numbers.
00:47He's 10 for 31 over the last five years, cutting horses back from 12 to 16 days.
00:52So, you know, I don't blame McCarthy for taking a shot
00:55because he certainly seems to have a knack for doing it.
00:58Like you said, he ran a winning race.
00:59He's going to get a good setup again.
01:01There's plenty of horses in this race that want to go forward.
01:04He's a proven commodity over and off track.
01:06As Alexis said, if there is rain in the forecast, it shouldn't dissuade those that want to back him once again.
01:12The only thing that's going to dissuade you here is going to be the price.
01:15He's 8 to 5 on the morning line.
01:16It's still a triple crown race.
01:18So, every once in a while, you know, you have horses take non-handicapping type money like a rendered judgment did, you know, in the Kentucky Derby.
01:27If he's 8 to 5, 9 to 5, he's value.
01:30If he's even money, he's not.
01:32You have to make that determination for yourself.
01:34But he is the best horse in this field.
01:36There's no question about that.
01:37Had to give a little NBA shout-out because DZ's got the Knicks hat on after a great few days for the Knicks.
01:44Alexa, I mean, this guy is just so good.
01:46I mean, he's the horse to beat, right, journalism?
01:48He is.
01:49I'm not going to try to beat him.
01:50I mean, he was my pick in the Derby.
01:51He's going to be my pick in here.
01:53I think it's going to set up perfectly for him, like Darren's saying.
01:57I mean, other than Sandman, I mean, he's kind of the only true closer in here.
02:01And he's going to get that set up with a contentious pace to run at.
02:05So, I really like journalism.
02:08As you know, I would be remiss not to give a shout-out to our friend Andrew Champagne because he was a big Ron Bauer guy.
02:14And Mike McCarthy, of course, won the Preakness with Ron Bauer.
02:16So, a big shout-out to AC.
02:18That's a great point.
02:18And speaking of winning the Preakness, one of the best stats I saw in the last few days doing the research for this,
02:24D. Wayne Lucas, the coach who's won the Preakness seven times,
02:27he has won triple crown races in five decades now, which is just insane.
02:32In the 80s, the 90s, the 2000s, 2010s, and the 2020s.
02:36Started in 1980, winning the Preakness with Kodaks, and he won last year with Seize the Gray.
02:41So, how cool is it, D.Z., that he's won it seven times, has all this history,
02:45and then the pilot aboard the Horse American Promise this year is a local from Maryland riding the Preakness for the first time.
02:52Doesn't get much cooler than that.
02:54No, it's true.
02:55And he took a Virginia path on the way to the Kentucky Derby as well.
02:58Yeah, I mean, this is the typical D. Wayne Lucas, yeah, the horse is doing well.
03:03We're just going to run him back in two weeks.
03:04That's the old-school mentality that Lucas had from the 80s and the 90s.
03:08That's why we saw him run so many horses.
03:10That's why he was able to win some of these races with horses that, you know,
03:13you typically would not expect to perform at this level.
03:17Commendable in the Belmont Stakes, you know, comes to mind, for example,
03:20who I think went into that race off like a 16th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
03:25How good is this horse is the question, though.
03:27When he gets away from the best competition, he runs well.
03:30When he runs against the best three-year-olds, he typically does not.
03:34He may have bounced off a big figure in the Virginia Derby.
03:39He may have not liked the sloppy-sealed racetrack at Churchill Downs,
03:42even though he has a win over a muddy track at Oakland.
03:44His two races in the slop at Churchill are not good.
03:47So there is a potential excuse if you're looking to make one for him.
03:51But he does need to improve dramatically.
03:54You are going to get paid, though, because he's going to be a huge number.
03:56He's a fringe exotics player for me, and it would very much surprise me,
04:02even though it is Lucas, and never dismiss Lucas in a race like this.
