Today, Rupert and his chums help the Station Master in Rupert and Nutwood Station.
00:30
There's a million stories to be told, all the things that he's done, and he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:43
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name. Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57
In all of his name.
01:05
While Mrs Bear is dusting the bookcase, Mr Bear is catching up with the news.
01:11
It says here that there's to be a competition for the best kept railway station in the country, he says.
01:19
Rupert, who's playing with his toy engine, looks up. Is there a prize given to the winner?
01:25
Yes, a silver cup.
01:27
It'll be nice if Nutwood can win it, smiles Mrs Bear.
01:31
I must go and tell my friends, Mummy. Perhaps we can help the Station Master.
01:35
Don't be late for tea, dear.
01:37
Rupert gets into his magic chariot and is away.
01:41
Bill Badger, Edward Trunk and Pudgy Pig are playing rounders on the common.
01:47
Rupert calls to them.
01:49
Hey there, I've got something to tell you.
01:53
The three chums hurry towards Rupert.
01:55
What's wrong? asks Edward worriedly.
01:59
Nothing's wrong. I've just come to let you know that there's a competition for the best kept railway station.
02:05
I thought it would be a super idea if we all helped Nutwood to win it.
02:09
Sounds like hard work to me, says Pudgy.
02:13
It'll be fun.
02:15
Pudgy's too lazy. He's worn out playing rounders, Rupert.
02:20
Anyway, I'm going home now to have a snack, says Pudgy leaving the chums.
02:25
See you soon, Pudgy, says Rupert. Jump in the chariot, you two, and we'll go to the station.
02:31
Although Nutwood Station is small in size, they're going to help it win the prize.
02:37
Come on, you two, says Rupert hurriedly as they land outside the station.
02:42
Hello, Rupert. Are you taking a train ride today? inquires the Station Master at the door.
02:48
We've come to help you win the prize, sir, replies Rupert, full of enthusiasm.
02:53
Prize? What prize? he asks, puzzled.
02:57
Why, the prize for the best kept station, of course. It's in the paper.
03:02
Oh? Is there a competition? Well, well, I haven't read the paper this morning.
03:08
We'll have to see what we can do about that.
03:10
Can we help? asks Rupert, and Bill and Edward nod enthusiastically.
03:15
Yes, please. Ted the porter isn't well today, so I'm a bit short-handed.
03:21
There's not time to do much between trains.
03:24
Right. Where shall we start?
03:26
Come onto the platform and let's see what's to be done.
03:30
It needs a bit of a sweep, I'm afraid, and the windows and doorknobs need a clean, not to mention the paintwork.
03:36
The flower bed doesn't look too good either, sir, says Rupert.
03:40
Um, have you any tools?
03:42
Well, now, come along and we'll see what we can do.
03:47
There you are. They're a bit worn out, I'm afraid, he says regretfully.
03:53
Yes, perhaps we could borrow some, says Rupert, looking at the rather old brooms and dusters.
04:00
Oh, that would be a great help.
04:03
Well, I must go and get ready for the 215 Express. See what you can do anyway.
04:08
And he leaves them.
04:09
Now, says Rupert, turning to the others.
04:12
Bill, do you think you could borrow a broom from your mother?
04:15
Oh yes, I'm sure she wouldn't mind.
04:18
My mother's got some nice new dusters and some polish, says Edward helpfully.
04:24
Right, and I'll borrow some gardening tools.
04:27
Let's meet back here in ten minutes, says Rupert, hurrying off.
04:32
Meanwhile, the 215 Express dashes through, leaving behind more rubbish for the chums to clear up.
04:41
Edward arrives back first, but Rupert isn't far behind.
04:45
Look, I've got some paint too. I think it's the same colour as the waiting room door, he says.
04:51
Rupert, Edward, I've got the broom. Right, here we go then.
04:57
Into the station march all three.
05:00
They must be done in time for tea.
05:03
Bill sweeps the rubbish into a pile, while Edward sees the knobs are shining in style.
05:09
Rupert takes all the weeds from the bed and makes the earth smooth and flat instead.
05:15
It's a pity we haven't got any flowers though, says Bill as he comes to see how Rupert is doing.
05:21
Yes, I don't think they'd grow in time if we planted some seeds now, do you?
05:27
Well, well, you're getting on in fine style, I can see.
05:32
It's a pity we haven't got any flowers though.
05:35
I know. If we could get some white stones, we could write the name Nutwood on the earth instead.
05:42
Then the station master has a good idea.
05:46
The 3.20 to Shrimpton Sands is due about now. If you were to go on it, you could be back by 4.30.
05:53
Yes, with some cockle shells. They're white.
05:58
At the seaside. Ooh, let's go Rupert.
06:02
Right, I'll give you a special ticket as you're going on railway business.
06:06
The countryside passes by at speed. They'll soon be at the seaside now indeed.
06:12
They've never travelled alone before, but the guard will look after them, that's for sure.
06:21
The beach looks a bit short of shells today, as the chums survey the scene.
06:26
Oh dear, sighs Rupert. I don't think we're going to get very many here.
06:32
Well, let's split up and see what we can do. We haven't much time, says Edward going in one direction.
06:39
I'll go this way.
06:41
Rupert looks around, and just near the mouth of a cave, he sees a very large shell.
06:48
Perhaps there'll be some more inside too, he says hopefully.
06:52
As he stoops to pick the shell up, a voice booms at him.
06:57
Leave me alone. I was just resting.
07:02
Oh, I'm sorry. I thought...
07:05
Rupert looks in astonishment.
07:07
The shell has become a hat, and underneath it is a little man all dressed in seaweed.
07:13
What do you want? he demands.
07:16
I'm looking for cockle shells, you see, because you can't just come along here and take away shells.
07:24
I am the shell collector in chief, he announces proudly.
07:29
And we've just had our collection for today.
07:32
Oh, I see. That's why there aren't any on the beach.
07:36
We use them to make sand.
07:40
To make sand? exclaims Rupert.
07:43
Yes, of course. Come with me and you'll see.
07:47
And he glides into the back of the cave.
07:49
Rupert follows warily, not knowing what he might find.
07:54
Then he hears a rumble crunch, rumble crunch.
07:58
The little man has led him into a big cavern, which is almost filled with a large machine.
08:04
This is where the sand is made, declares the collector.
08:08
As Rupert sees another little man feeding cockle shells into one side,
08:13
and out at the other side comes sand.
08:16
Oh, I didn't know you needed the shells. We won't take them anymore.
08:21
Well, what did you want them for anyway?
08:24
Rupert explains about how they need the shells to write the word nut wood on the flower bed of the station,
08:31
to help them win the prize.
08:33
Well, perhaps we could spare one of these bags. It's only a drop in the ocean to us.
08:39
Thank you very much, says Rupert gratefully, as the little man gives him a sackful.
08:44
I'm afraid I must go now, or I shall miss the train back. Goodbye.
08:51
Edward and Bill are already in the train when Rupert staggers on with his sack.
08:55
Oh, Rupert, we thought you were going to miss it, says Bill as the train gathers speed.
09:01
You've got a lovely lot of shells. Where did you get them?
09:05
Yes, we only got four between us, says Edward.
09:10
Oh, I met the shell collector in chief, says Rupert airily.
09:15
They make a good job of nut wood when they arrive back.
09:19
Very good, very good, and just in time too, says the station master,
09:25
as he hears the chief inspector's car draw up. I must go and meet him.
09:30
And I proudly present Nutwood station with the carp.
09:37
Rupert and his chums are very proud.
09:40
And the station master invites them to a special buffet tea.
09:44
Pongy will be sorry he went home for his snack when we tell him about this, says Bill as they all tuck in.
09:51
Did you find your friends and tell them about the competition, dear? asks Mrs Bear.
09:56
Yes, Mummy. And what do you think? Nutwood station won the silver cup.
10:02
Well, I never. Now come and have your tea.
10:06
I'm not hungry. We had a special tea with the station master.
10:11
Oh, well. We can't compete with silver cups, I suppose.
10:17
Rupert, Rupert the Bell. Everyone sing his name. Rupert, Rupert the Bell. Everyone come and join.
