Week Ahead – Will it stop raining?
Met Office

14/10/2024
It’ll turn a little drier for a day or so around the middle of the week, for many that will coincide with bonfire night, but overall the showers will keep coming and it will also turn colder. Alex Deakin has the details…….

Hello.
00:01
Welcome to your weather for the week
00:02
ahead from the Met Office.
00:03
There's more rain to come this week.
00:05
If you're after a drier period,
00:07
well, the middle of the week offers
00:09
something a little bit drier for
00:10
many of us.
00:11
And actually, Tuesday night for
00:12
Bonfire Night looks largely
00:14
dry at this stage, but it's not
00:16
going to be mild, if anything,
00:18
feeling a lot colder this week
00:19
with further rain to come by the
00:21
end of the week.
00:22
The bigger picture tells the story.
00:24
This is Monday's chart.
00:25
Low pressure controlling our
00:27
weather. Fast forward to Friday
00:29
and it looks remarkably similar.
00:31
That's not the same low.
00:32
We will get something a bit drier
00:34
in between, but it kind of tells
00:35
the story that low pressure will be
00:37
dominating this week.
00:38
Let's rewind and run through
00:40
day by day.
00:41
Looking at Monday night into
00:43
Tuesday, that first low starts to
00:45
drift to the south and that
00:47
allows colder air to start
00:49
to push in across Scotland and
00:50
Northern Ireland.
00:51
This weather front will bring
00:53
some dull and damp conditions,
00:55
certainly across northeast England
00:56
early on on Tuesday.
00:58
And that showery rain pushing into
00:59
the Midlands, parts of East Anglia
01:01
and the southeast during Tuesday
01:03
afternoon. A few showers will come
01:05
into northern and eastern Scotland,
01:07
but for many western areas,
01:08
Tuesday looks quite a bit drier.
01:10
We should see some sunshine at
01:12
times in Northern Ireland, western
01:14
parts of Scotland in particular.
01:15
Temperature wise, well, that cooler
01:17
air is pushing in.
01:18
So single digits across Scotland,
01:20
11 to 13 elsewhere,
01:22
but feeling cold with that wind
01:24
coming in from the North Sea and
01:25
with a cloud and the showery rain
01:27
across the southeastern corner
01:29
during Tuesday evening.
01:30
Now, it will still be here through
01:32
the evening as well.
01:33
So although I said many places
01:35
having a fine bonfire night,
01:37
there will still be some showers
01:38
across eastern Scotland and
01:40
particularly across East Anglia and
01:41
the southeast and certainly
01:43
wherever you are, even if it's dry,
01:44
as in nothing falling from the sky,
01:46
it will be wet underfoot.
01:48
And it's only quite chilly as well.
01:50
A cold night Tuesday night
01:52
between weather systems, a very
01:54
brief ridge tries to move
01:56
in. That will allow some fog patches
01:58
to form for Wednesday morning and
02:00
it will allow those temperatures to
02:01
drop away.
02:02
So a cold, potentially frosty
02:04
start on Wednesday morning.
02:05
But weather fronts aren't too far
02:07
away and these will be shimmying
02:09
in through the day, bringing cloud
02:11
and some showery rain to
02:13
western areas.
02:14
The odd shower close to eastern
02:16
coast, but for many central and
02:17
eastern parts, Wednesday is dry
02:19
until this band of rain creeps its
02:21
way in.
02:22
That's cloud increasing coming
02:24
in after a cold night on Tuesday
02:26
night means temperatures could
02:27
really struggle on Wednesday,
02:28
single digits in many places
02:30
and feeling particularly cold as
02:32
that rain drifts in
02:34
from this area of low pressure that
02:35
then takes control of our weather
02:37
through the second half of the
02:39
week. Again, the isobar is quite
02:40
close together.
02:41
So again, there could be some
02:42
stronger winds later in the week,
02:44
and particularly close to this low,
02:45
some heavy, maybe even thundery
02:47
showers across the southwest.
02:49
It's another day of bands of showers
02:51
drifting across the country around
02:53
that area of low pressure.
02:54
Again, it won't rain all day.
02:56
There will be drier and brighter
02:58
spells, but temperature wise,
02:59
again, many places won't
03:02
get out of single figures.
03:03
Seven to nine degrees typically,
03:05
maybe 10 or 11 on the south coast.
03:06
But again, possibly quite gusty
03:08
here close to that area of low
03:10
pressure that's still with us as we
03:11
go into Friday, showing
03:14
signs of ebbing away, perhaps
03:15
through the day. There's quite a
03:16
bit of uncertainty as we get
03:17
towards the end of the week.
03:19
But again, around that low pressure
03:20
system, there will be showers
03:22
through the course of Friday,
03:23
especially early on on Friday
03:24
morning. And then the winds start
03:26
to come in again from the north
03:27
across parts of Scotland.
03:28
So feeling quite cold here
03:30
and possibly with some frost
03:32
around as we go into the weekend.
03:34
Look at the maximum temperatures.
03:35
Again, it's single figures for most
03:36
places are quite a bit colder
03:38
than it has been recently.
03:39
But if that low does ever weigh,
03:41
then we could start to see some
03:43
drier and brighter weather returning
03:44
into Friday afternoon and Friday
03:46
night. A bit of uncertainty then as
03:48
we go into the weekend, that low
03:50
pulls away.
03:51
We try and build in a brief
03:53
ridge of high pressure, but there
03:54
are weather fronts waiting to
03:55
bring more wet weather in from the
03:57
west once more.
03:58
So as I said, a bit of uncertainty
04:00
about the weekend, it could start
04:01
dry and a little bit chilly.
04:03
But stay tuned to the forecast
04:04
throughout this week and we'll
04:06
update you on the progress of the
04:07
weekend. There's always more on our
04:09
social media channels.
