00:00 There's lots going on with the weather over the next few days.
00:02 Whatever your plans are for Christmas, please do keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings,
00:08 because there's a few of those around.
00:10 Here's the bigger picture. High pressure is kind of controlling our weather, but from a distance.
00:15 These weather fronts draped across the country and plenty of isobars as well.
00:20 Still quite windy, although not as windy as when Storm Pierre crossed during Thursday and into Friday.
00:26 That weather front marks the boundary between the milder air toppling in around the high pressure
00:30 and the colder air in place across the far north-east of Scotland,
00:32 where snow showers will continue through Friday over Shetland.
00:35 And as the rain from this weather front peps up and hits that colder air,
00:39 we could well see some heavy snow through the night across the north-east of mainland Scotland.
00:44 So we have a Met Office warning in place for that, likely to continue into Saturday morning.
00:49 For the west across Scotland, it's the rain that's likely to cause some disruption
00:54 as it sets in through the early hours and then lasts for most of Saturday.
00:58 A little bit of showery rain possible in southern Scotland over the hills of Wales,
01:02 but for the bulk of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, just a cloudy but dry and breezy night.
01:07 And that combination of cloud and breeze keeps the temperatures right up as well.
01:10 Not a cold start to Saturday morning, except in that north-eastern corner,
01:15 where the snow will continue to fall.
01:16 Not a great day on the roads generally across Scotland, with some snow through the morning.
01:22 It could really build up in a few places, particularly on some of those higher routes.
01:26 And then in the west, that rain continuing to fall.
01:29 Heavy rain as well, a lot of spray and surface water on the roads.
01:32 Not a day to be heading into the Scottish Highlands.
01:36 Some of that rain will spread into the central belt across southern Scotland
01:39 and maybe parts of northern England too.
01:41 But again, for the bulk of England, Wales, bar some rain over the Welsh mountains,
01:46 it's generally dry, but predominantly cloudy.
01:48 Another grey day.
01:50 Some breaks in the cloud over eastern England, a hint of brightness here.
01:54 Not that there's much power in the sun at this time of year,
01:56 but it could lift the temperatures into the teens, even where it's cloudy.
01:59 It is mild, 11 or 12 degrees Celsius, but perhaps feeling cooler than that with the brisk wind,
02:06 and particularly with the rain and strong winds across the far northwest.
02:10 That rain, though, will head south during Saturday evening.
02:13 It turns down for a time across Northern Ireland, then the rain sets in across Wales.
02:17 And so here we also have a Met Office yellow warning in place.
02:20 That rain potentially causing some disruption,
02:23 possibility of flooding as it lasts into Christmas Eve.
02:26 Elsewhere, the rain should slip away, generally turning a little bit drier,
02:29 staying quite breezy and staying very mild.
02:33 Temperatures overnight into Christmas Eve may well stay in double digits.
02:38 What about Christmas Eve?
02:39 Well, we've got low pressure between Scotland and Iceland, plenty of isobars on the charts.
02:44 It's likely to stay pretty windy, but it does start pretty mild as well.
02:48 The warmer air is tucked into here. This is a warm sector.
02:52 What happens is the low tracks to the north of Scotland.
02:55 That weather front tries to slip southwards, but it kind of ripples and wiggles.
03:00 And if anything, then pushes back further north into Christmas Day and taking the milder air back with it.
03:06 So it is a bit of a mishmash.
03:07 There'll be some rain lingering across Christmas Eve through Wales,
03:12 some gusty winds picking up as that front tries to push south over northeast England
03:16 and then across parts of northern Scotland close to that low.
03:19 So we have warnings in place for the winds on Christmas Eve, again, potentially causing some disruption.
03:25 Could be pretty damp through the day across South Wales, southwest England, too.
03:29 It stays windy. It stays mild for most places as well.
03:32 Temperatures, if it brightens up to the east of the Pennines, could get into the teens, 13, 14 degrees possible.
03:39 And even where it's cloudy, temperatures significantly above average.
03:43 It will be windy, though, on Christmas Eve across northern Scotland.
03:46 Something to bear in mind if you're out on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day itself.
03:50 Again, a bit of a mishmash. Rain likely in the south, some uncertainty about how far north this rain gets.
03:55 And then this rain bad hitting the colder air across Scotland.
03:58 Well, that could make for a white Christmas, mostly over hills, but even at lower levels on Christmas Day,
04:03 the potential for a few snow flurries.
04:06 Further south, though, it isn't going to be a white one for many, a damp one,
04:10 but it will be pretty mild with temperatures, again, well above average for the time of year.
04:15 But the colder air in places across Scotland, as I said, does give the chance of some snow, at least for a time here.
04:21 Plenty going on, as I said, even by Boxing Day, it does look a little calmer and brighter.
04:27 That might be your best bet for a Christmas walk.
04:29 So do please keep up to date.
