11 July - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:01Hi there and welcome to the latest update from the Met Office.
00:04The heat wave is peaking through the next 24 hours with very warm nights expected, hot
00:11days for many of us and widespread clear skies as we go into Friday night but temperatures
00:16staying high.
00:17We're talking about lows, overnight lows in the high teens, perhaps even 20 Celsius
00:24in one or two spots, perhaps the warmest spot in the west of Scotland.
00:28Now there will be some low cloud drifting into the east, eastern Scotland, Shetland, eastern
00:33England as well and that will persist for the first few hours of Saturday before eventually
00:39retreating back towards the coast.
00:42So of course that's going to limit temperature rise a bit more in the east and we do have
00:46this easterly to south easterly airflow across the southeast.
00:50So temperatures in east Anglia in the southeast not as high as the last heat wave.
00:55The highest temperatures more shifted further north and west and it's likely to be Scotland
01:01and Northern Ireland's hottest day of the year so far.
01:03So let's take a look at that.
01:04Not so hot for Shetland and Orkney with the low cloud lingering, likewise for the east
01:08coast of Scotland.
01:10But widely inland through Scotland we're talking about temperatures reaching the high 20s
01:16and some parts of western, north-western and northern Scotland as well as Glasgow, 30 or
01:2131 Celsius.
01:23So hottest day of the year so far for Scotland and really quite exceptional temperatures for
01:29Scotland even for July.
01:31Northern Ireland, likewise, widely the high 20s, a little bit lower on that east and south-east
01:37coast but inland, 28, 29 Celsius, perhaps 30 degrees in one or two spots.
01:42Across much of northern and western England, similar kinds of temperatures, high 20s into
01:46the low 30s.
01:47But the highest temperatures in this heat wave, peaking on Saturday, likely to be in this zone
01:54across the west and south-west Midlands into east Wales, the west country, where widely
01:5931 or 32 Celsius is likely, 33, perhaps 34 degrees in one or two of the hotter spots.
02:07Notice the marked difference there for the east coast of England.
02:11Now this part of Kent saw the highest temperatures of the last heat wave but a different wind direction
02:17of course.
02:17In this case, limits those temperatures more but widely sunny skies whether you've got
02:22the high temperatures or not.
02:23We've just got that low cloud along the east coast that will tend to creep back inland.
02:29On Saturday night, it's going to be fickle and tenuous, not going to affect everyone.
02:34One or two showers, possibly turning up into the east coast as well as the night progresses.
02:39Elsewhere across the UK, clear skies and in some spots, temperatures even higher compared
02:44with Friday night.
02:45We could see 20 or 21 Celsius as temperatures dip across north-west Scotland.
02:52Now, the start of Sunday brings with it a fair amount of cloud in the east.
02:56Low cloud initially, again retreating to the beaches, but more extensive cloud starts to
03:02come in to the east and some wispy higher cloud elsewhere, so that's going to limit temperatures
03:07a bit more compared with Saturday.
03:08More widely, the mid to high 20s are 30 or 31 Celsius still possible though.
03:14Then into the start of Monday, the higher temperatures get shifted east, 28, 29 Celsius
03:19in the southeast, but cooler air arrives in the west along with some outbreaks of rain and
03:25showers, particularly towards the northwest as low pressure increasingly dominates as we
03:29go into next week.
03:31But just about anywhere could see a few spots of rain or some heavy showers and it's going
03:36to stay fairly mixed through next week, not as hot as we're expecting this weekend.
03:41Bye.
