20 June - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there, whilst it's southern parts of the UK where we've seen some hot and sunny weather
00:04so far this week, the heat and the sunshine extends nationwide during the rest of Friday
00:10as high pressure pushes out to the North Sea, establishing a southerly airflow, bringing
00:15heat from northern France, but also allowing some instability to arrive from the west.
00:21So we've already seen a few showers into the southwest, they'll tend to drift northeast
00:25into Wales. One or two showers also across parts of northern England and northeast Scotland,
00:31perhaps the odd thundery downport, but these will be very isolated. For the vast majority
00:34it's dry, it's bright, some medium level cloud drifting here and there, but where we get
00:39that very strong June sunshine, temperatures reaching the mid to high 20s widely, even as
00:43far north as northern mainland Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the peak temperatures through
00:48the Midlands, northwest England, 30 to 32 Celsius possible. But we will see some of these showers
00:54and they'll continue into the evening for parts of northeast Scotland and northern England.
00:59Eventually most places are dry overnight and we will have clear spells, but some cloud will
01:04arrive into the west where it will stay humid. The most humid air is in the west, temperatures
01:08in places not dropping below 20 or 21 Celsius, so another uncomfortable night for sleeping.
01:15And then we get off to that very warm start on Saturday, temperatures shooting up quickly
01:19during the morning and into the afternoon. Always a chance of some showers and perhaps the
01:23cold thunderstorm in places, particularly towards the west and southwest. But the focus initially
01:28is on the rising temperatures and that very strong June sunshine, summer solstice, of course,
01:32so it doesn't get much stronger than this. And temperatures as a result reaching the low 30s
01:38across parts of central and eastern England, perhaps as high in one or two spots as 33 or 34
01:44Celsius. Edinburgh, 27 Celsius. But all that heat may result in some very severe thunderstorms.
01:52And the main focus area, parts of north Wales, north Midlands, northern England, as we go into
01:57Saturday evening for some serious downpours, large hail, gusty winds, frequent lightning as well.
02:04Not everywhere, of course, is going to see one of these. They'll be highly hit and miss. Some places
02:08will avoid them entirely, even in that main risk area. But where they do occur, there could be
02:13some considerable impacts.
