16 June - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. Much warmer or even hotter weather will arrive across most of the UK later this
00:06week, but for the time being there is a north-south contrast. Certainly we've seen these outbreaks
00:11of rain continuing for northwest Scotland throughout much of the day. That tends to
00:15sink south. It's a weather front that will bring some heavy bursts of rain at times and
00:19some strong wind with gales around exposed coasts of northern Scotland. But as it sinks
00:24south it becomes a little bit more patchy and broken up. It runs into high pressure
00:29which is sitting close to the south of the UK. And with that high pressure, lighter
00:34winds and clear skies overnight. There'll be some mist and low cloud forming in the south
00:39by dawn. But it's going to be a mild night wherever you are, whether you've got the
00:43cloud and the rain in the north or the clear spells further south. Then heading
00:48into Tuesday morning, mist in the south will clear very quickly. The strong June
00:53sunshine then developing across many parts of the southern third of the UK, the
00:58Midlands, East Anglia, the south. And as that strong sunshine gets to work, it will
01:03be a very warm day. But in between, we do have an area of cloud and outbreaks of rain
01:09sinking south. The rain tending to peter out, but a damp afternoon to come for North Wales
01:13and northwest England in particular. Bright spells and showers replacing that across Northern
01:18Ireland and Scotland. Here temperatures will rise up to the high teens, perhaps low 20s, where
01:24we've got the frontal zone, not quite so warm. But in the southeast, 26 celsius possible given
01:32that strong June sunshine. Heading into Tuesday night and Wednesday
01:36morning, the cloud across central parts tends to sink south, but it's all breaking up and
01:41becoming very tenuous. To the north, we do have some showers continuing across northern
01:46Scotland and a brisk breeze. But for most, it's a clear and dry night. Fresher in the north,
01:52but still relatively mild, if not warm, in the south. Then we start off with those patches
01:58of cloud across England and Wales. Even these tend to fizzle away during the morning. Plenty
02:03of strong sunshine developing across England and Wales and working its way northwards into
02:08southern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland by the afternoon. We do still have some showers
02:13into the north of Scotland at first. They tend to fade away. But an area of cloud and some
02:18outbreaks of light rain starting to edge into Northern Ireland by the end of Wednesday afternoon.
02:23Mid to high teens across northern parts of the country, nothing too hot at this stage.
02:28Mid 20s further south and southeast. Possibility 27 degrees in some spots, a sign of the increasing
02:36heat to come later this week. And that's because initially we've got high pressure over the UK.
02:43That's going to allow the strong June sunshine to increase temperatures day by day. Then
02:48that high slowly drifts to the east. And from around Friday, but more especially into the weekend,
02:54that will allow this plume of very warm or hot air to move up from the south, from Iberia,
03:01increasing temperatures widely across Western Europe. And the possibility by Saturday of the
03:06low 30s across parts of the UK. We'll keep you updated on all of that, as always,
03:11through our YouTube channel. Bye-bye.
