10 July - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Welcome to your afternoon weather update from the Met Office.
00:03The first day today of a heat wave for some parts of the UK.
00:07The heat is likely to peak on Saturday.
00:10Here's the view from space, largely clear skies across the UK.
00:13This chain of cloud out in the Atlantic is a whole host of weather fronts and low pressure systems.
00:19But if we put the winds on high in the sky, the jet stream,
00:22you can see that it's pushing all of that cloud on those weather fronts to the north of the UK.
00:28They are still affecting the far north, bringing some thicker cloud at times over the Western Isles and the Northern Isles,
00:33maybe even a little bit of showery rain here and there over the Highlands, maybe the Grampians too.
00:38But for most places, it's dry.
00:39It's a sunnier day compared to yesterday for a good part of England and Wales.
00:44There is some mist and low cloud and sea fog milling around the Irish Sea.
00:48That may affect some coasts here at times.
00:50But most places, it's all about the sunshine.
00:53More of it than yesterday.
00:54Temperatures higher than yesterday, likely to exceed 30 Celsius.
00:57Across parts of the Midlands, southeast England.
01:01And temperatures just ticking up further north as well.
01:03That will continue.
01:04Not as warm across the far northwest with thicker cloud and a brisk breeze.
01:08But we are going to see that rain just pulling away to the north.
01:11It'll be a little damp over Shetland through the first part of the night.
01:15But generally becoming dry even across the far north of Scotland.
01:19Mist and low cloud.
01:20That's going to be another issue again through the Irish Sea.
01:23So the east coast of Northern Ireland, just like this morning, may start a bit murky.
01:28And some other coasts through the Irish Sea, around the Isle of Man, southwest of Scotland,
01:33even around the coast of North Wales, could be a bit murky first thing on Friday as well.
01:38It will be a pretty warm night.
01:39Temperatures in the south, in particular, holding up in the mid to high teens.
01:4118, probably the low in London and Cardiff.
01:44A little bit more comfortable further north.
01:46But temperatures will be rising here by day and by night as we head into the weekend.
01:51So Friday morning, when you pull the curtains back across the east coast of Northern Ireland,
01:55it may well be a little bit murky.
01:57Some mist and sea fog just in here.
01:59It may take a while for it to clear away.
02:01Always the threat of it coming back, but tending to shrink as we go through the day.
02:06And the same goes for around Anglesey in the Isle of Man.
02:09But generally, it is going to be a sunny day tomorrow for the vast majority.
02:13Across northern Scotland, a sunny air day.
02:15Those weather fronts finally starting to peel away.
02:18And it will, again, be hotter by a degree or so.
02:21More widely over 30 Celsius across the heart of England.
02:2531, 32 likely in one or two spots.
02:28The coast will be a little cooler, but you can see that warmth extending now further north into northern Scotland.
02:34Along the Murray Firth, we could get into the high 20s and a warmer day too through the central belt with more sunshine.
02:40A balmy summer's evening this Friday if you're heading out.
02:44And then as we head into the weekend, well, temperatures will be ticking up a little further on Saturday.
02:49Notice that weather front not too far away.
02:52And you can see it's a similar pattern to how we start with high pressure now edging a little bit further to the east of the UK.
02:59But again, if we put those winds high up, you can see what the jet stream's doing.
03:02And it's now just tilted.
03:03So it's pushing the weather fronts and the low pressure systems further away, allowing that high pressure to dominate even more.
03:11And that means with the day-on-day rise, the temperatures, that high pressure squashing the air, more sunshine on Saturday.
03:16Well, I can see the peak of the temperatures probably across East Wales, West Midlands, down to Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, that sort of area.
03:2632, maybe a 33, perhaps even a degree or so higher in one or two locations.
03:32A little cooler on some of these eastern coasts.
03:34A little warmer perhaps in northern Scotland could get to 30 Celsius along the Murray coastline there.
03:40A hotter feel across the Highlands as well.
03:42Still pretty hot here on Sunday, but temperatures elsewhere on Sunday a little bit lower.
03:48A bit more cloud across eastern areas and a bit more breeze picking up here too.
03:52But still, it's still going to be a hot day for the vast majority.
03:56For more details on the weekend, you can catch Aidan with the weekend forecast.
