9 July - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Temperatures are starting to tick up. Another hot spell of weather is on the way, but it's
00:05far from sunny everywhere today. We started off with quite a bit of cloud as the view
00:10from space shows. This zone of cloud gradually aging southwards, but tending to break up
00:15a little bit as it does so. But it's far from blue skies everywhere. Some places staying
00:19mostly cloudy, but it's still warmer than it was yesterday and it's reasonably bright
00:24and many areas seeing some blue sky. Of course, eastern Scotland, increasingly across southern
00:28Scotland, Northern Ireland, much of West Wales, southern England also seeing lengthy spells
00:32of sunshine. And where it's cloudy around lunchtime, even here that cloud will break up a little
00:36bit more as we head through the afternoon and into the evening. The main exception will be
00:40the far north of Scotland, where I think the Western Isles, Northern Isles also staying
00:44pretty glum with some light and drizzly rain, especially across Orkney. A bit of a breeze
00:49blowing here as well, keeping the temperatures in the mid to high teens. But elsewhere, we're
00:53over 20 degrees pretty widely. And where we see the sunniest skies across parts of the
00:58south, we could easily get to 27, maybe 28 in the capital, perhaps even squeak up to 29.
01:03Coasts always a little bit cooler and particularly where we've got a bit more cloud around. But
01:08that cloud will continue to melt away, giving many areas a fine summer's evening. Again,
01:13that main exception will be northern parts of the Highlands and the Western Isles, where
01:17we'll continue to feed in thicker cloud and some light and drizzly rain at times
01:21through the early hours. Temperature-wise, well, we're going to hold up those values
01:25in the teens in most towns and cities. So quite a warm night. A bit misty here and there,
01:31particularly around some coasts down to the southwest. The potential for a bit of a grey
01:36start here. But overall, I think it'll be a sunnier day on Thursday compared to today.
01:41Some mist and low cloud possible in and around the Irish Sea as well. That may affect the east
01:45coast of Northern Ireland, the southwest of Scotland and the Isle of Man at times. But again,
01:50most places will be sunnier than today across England, Wales, Southern Scotland, Northern
01:55Ireland. There will be, though, this chain of thicker cloud, rain and drizzle at times across
02:00the far north of the mainland of Scotland, the Northern Isles and the Western Isles, where
02:04as a result, as you might imagine, it will again be on the coolish side with temperatures
02:09a touch below average, perhaps in the mid-teens. But elsewhere, we'll be ticking those temperatures
02:14up once more, particularly across England and Wales. First day likely to get over 30 degrees
02:20Celsius, but it won't be the last day this week. Now, as you'll notice, the coasts are
02:24again a little bit cooler, particularly if it does stay a bit murky around some of those
02:28Irish sea coasts. Through Thursday evening, still some of that drizzly rain across the
02:33far north, but it is showing signs of pushing away to the north. So even the far northwest
02:38is likely to join in with the warming trend as we go into Friday and the weekend, all thanks
02:44to this area of high pressure. Sitting across us, squashing the air and the combination of that
02:50squeezing of the air and the sunshine this time of year will allow those temperatures to continue to
02:56rise into the weekend. The cooler air is out here, out west, behind this weather front, but instead of
03:01coming in, it kind of pulls away a little bit. So the hot conditions are going to last through the
03:07weekend. We'll see more in the way of sunshine. Those temperatures ticking up. Probably the highest
03:12temperatures may be over the Midlands, parts of southeast Wales. But on Saturday, we could also
03:17get to 33, perhaps even 34 across the southeast. Hotting up too, as I mentioned, across most of
03:23Scotland and Northern Ireland. The peak of the temperatures in Scotland, perhaps on Sunday,
03:28when we could on the Murray coastline, get up close to 30 degrees Celsius. For England and Wales,
03:33perhaps not as hot on Sunday, but still hot across many areas with temperatures in the mid to high
03:40twenties or low thirties. As the breeze picks up around some coasts, it will be cooler again on
03:45some beaches. And so again, there's the possibility of some mist and low cloud, especially at times on
03:50the east coast. So that's something we need to keep an eye on as we go through the weekend. But
03:55generally, a lot of hot sunshine around. Do take note that the sun being so strong at this time of
04:00year, you'll need the sunscreen on. Lots of advice about how to handle the heat on the Met Office
04:04website. Next question, of course, how long will the heat last? Well, for that, you'll be wanting to be
04:09watching the 10 day Trent. And that'll be available on our YouTube channel by Wednesday afternoon.
