Welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:03
It is slowly turning milder, but for most of us,
00:06
it'll still be a cold weekend.
00:08
And it's certainly cold out there this afternoon.
00:11
The view from space shows some speckles in the North Sea.
00:14
There's showers just drifting and clipping the East Coast.
00:17
Thicker cloud, though, down to the Southwest.
00:19
That is a weather front, and that
00:21
is slowly trying to introduce milder air.
00:23
But the dominant feature is this large area
00:26
of high pressure that's building in across the country.
00:29
Keeping things dry, keeping things mostly sunny by day,
00:32
but also keeping things pretty chilly.
00:34
There's that weather front, though.
00:35
It's brought more cloud to the Southwest,
00:37
a very different day for southwest England, south world.
00:39
A little bit of rain and drizzle here and there.
00:41
Maybe a few flakes of snow over the hills as well.
00:44
One or two showers along the South Coast.
00:46
As I mentioned, those showers just trying to feed in
00:49
from the North Sea, clipping easternmost counties
00:51
of England, Northeast Scotland.
00:53
But many areas dry, fine, and sunny.
00:56
But it is cold.
00:57
Temperatures struggling to get much of a freezing,
01:00
certainly where any fog lingers.
01:01
And there are a few fog patches around.
01:03
Two or three, the top temperature for most places.
01:06
But it is a bit milder in the Southwest.
01:07
Later on, could get to eight or nine in the far Southwest.
01:10
That blanket of cloud will keep the temperatures up
01:13
a little bit overnight across the Southwest.
01:15
And the cloud will thicken as the weather front edges
01:17
in across Northern Ireland, bringing
01:19
a little bit of rain in here.
01:21
Again, maybe the odd flake of snow over the hills.
01:24
For many areas, though, it's dry.
01:25
And the biggest concern tonight perhaps
01:27
will be the fog, as well as the tumbling temperatures.
01:30
Some dense patches of fog are likely
01:32
to form through the night across parts of England and Wales
01:35
in particular.
01:36
Temperatures, again, are going to be dropping sharply.
01:40
Frost forming rapidly this evening.
01:42
And by first thing Saturday morning, minus 3, minus 4.
01:45
That's in urban areas.
01:46
Rural parts could get down to minus 16, minus 17
01:49
across where there's snow lying on the ground
01:51
through Northern England and Scotland.
01:53
Again, though, further west with that cloud,
01:55
temperature actually holding up.
01:56
Milder nights across Northern Ireland and West Wales.
02:00
But there will be some rain here as well.
02:02
So a dull, damp start to Saturday.
02:03
That rain, light and patchy, will creep its way
02:06
into western fringes of Scotland,
02:09
maybe at times into North Wales, a few spots of rain as well.
02:12
But perhaps a drier day in the southwest of England,
02:15
although still pretty cloudy here.
02:17
Fog is going to be stubborn, slow to clear.
02:19
The Welsh Marches, Northwest England, the Midlands,
02:22
East Anglia, patchy in nature, but quite
02:24
dense and very stubborn.
02:27
And where the fog sticks, temperatures
02:28
will really struggle.
02:29
But for a good part of eastern England, eastern Scotland,
02:32
it's another dry, bright day.
02:33
And actually, it may well cheer up in Northern Ireland.
02:35
It'll certainly get a bit milder here as well, 6, 7 degrees,
02:38
maybe a little higher in the southwest.
02:40
Again, many areas, though, temperatures
02:42
struggling 3 or 4 degrees.
02:43
And where that fog does stick, we probably
02:46
won't get above freezing.
02:48
That fog may thicken up a little bit during Saturday evening.
02:51
But we are going to start to see a bit more of a change
02:53
as we head through the second half of the weekend.
02:56
The cloud continuing to edge in, not much
02:58
in the way of rain on it.
02:59
But of course, anything falling out the sky
03:01
could freeze up and make things a little icy during the weekend.
03:04
But behind me, the cloud is starting to thicken once more.
03:08
And that is a little bit more of a lively weather front,
03:11
starting to push in towards the northwest during Sunday.
03:14
High pressure, though, still in control,
03:16
still bringing a lot of dry and cold weather
03:19
for England and Wales.
03:20
Perhaps not quite as sunny on Sunday over the Midlands.
03:23
But parts of eastern England, again,
03:25
could have some of that patchy and dense fog.
03:27
But the cloud breaking up a little bit
03:29
for Wales, southwest England.
03:30
So probably a brighter day here with some sunshine.
03:32
Those weather fronts will bring cloud and rain
03:34
into the northwest and a strengthening wind.
03:36
But look at where the wind is coming from.
03:38
It's coming from the south.
03:39
So it will be slowly introducing milder air, so 7, 8, 9 degrees
03:44
across northern Britain.
03:45
Temperature a little higher on Sunday further south,
03:47
but still on the cold side at 4 or 5 Celsius.
03:50
Even here, though, it should turn a bit milder
03:52
as we head into next week.
03:54
Do keep up to date with the forecast.
