11 July - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there. Unlike the last two heatwaves, this one is much more widespread across the UK,
00:07encompassing most of the country. And you can see on Friday afternoon the widespread nature
00:13of the sunshine, just some low cloud there for Shetland, one or two patches around, a few coastal
00:19areas elsewhere, for example, eastern Butts, northern England and the south coast. But these
00:23will be very isolated and for the vast majority it's simply cloud-free skies, very strong
00:29sunshine and high temperatures, widely the mid to high 20s and up to the low 30s across
00:35the central and western parts of the UK. West Midlands, East Wales seeing the peak but cooler
00:40down the east coast and it's towards the east coast where we'll see some patchy low cloud
00:45and mistiness return overnight. This will be very tenuous, it's not going to affect everyone
00:51but there will be some patches creeping inland by dawn. Elsewhere across the UK it's clear
00:57but it's very warm overnight. Widely the high teens and in some spots towards the west,
01:02especially over the hills of western and northwestern Scotland, temperatures not dipping below 20
01:08or 21 Celsius. We start the day though with some of that mist and low cloud affecting eastern coasts.
01:15Much of it will drift offshore once again but a few patches will remain keeping things cooler
01:20and this onshore breeze will keep it cooler in the east and southeast compared with the last two
01:25heat waves but come further west and that's where the highest temperatures will be. We're talking
01:29about widely up to 29 or 30 Celsius across northern Ireland into Scotland. Scotland could see 31 or even
01:3932 Celsius in some of the hotter spots towards the southwest and perhaps the Murray coast but
01:45elsewhere it's going to be even hotter. Western England, southwest Midlands, East Wales, the west country
01:52seeing 31, 32 Celsius widely, a chance of 33 or 34 degrees. So the hot spot there somewhere like Gloucestershire
02:00for example but the east coast like I say feeling a little bit cooler because of the mist, the cloud
02:07and that breeze coming from the North Sea. Then on Saturday night we will see some of that mist and low cloud
02:14come back in again, again patchy in nature. It will be very tenuous and fickle. Elsewhere across the UK
02:20clear skies and another very warm night to come. Once again temperatures in some spots not below 20
02:26Celsius. Into Sunday there will be more cloud in the sky because of a system moving in from the west
02:31and another system moving in from the east but by Monday after a mostly dry and another hot day on
02:36Sunday, Monday sees low pressure return bringing cooler air but also an increased chance of showers,
02:43longer spells of rain and some thunderstorms particularly for Northern Ireland and Scotland although showers could
02:49crop up just about anywhere. So all change into next week. This weekend though sees the peak of the heat.
