Hi there.
00:01
The heat and humidity continues to rise during the rest of the day, and that could spark
00:05
some very severe weather overnight.
00:08
The Met Office have issued an amber warning for thunderstorms across parts of eastern
00:12
England.
00:13
But ahead of those thunderstorms, actually long spells of sunshine for much of England
00:17
and Wales, and for Scotland and Northern Ireland also some bright spells, although showers
00:22
will occur on and off here, and there'll be cloudier skies in general across much of Scotland
00:27
and Northern Ireland.
00:28
The cloud then thickens across Wales and southwest England, with heavy rain moving in here by
00:33
the evening rush hour.
00:35
But before the thunderstorms arrive in the east and southeast, it is going to be very
00:39
warm, if not hot.
00:40
Temperature is peaking at 29 Celsius.
00:43
Here's the system that's likely to bring some lively weather overnight, and it's these frontal
00:48
systems that'll bring some heavy rain and some thunderstorms to many parts of the UK.
00:53
But within these frontal systems, within this plume of heat and humidity emanating from northern
01:00
France, that's likely to destabilise, and that's where the most severe thunderstorms
01:07
are likely to occur across parts of the east and southeast of England.
01:12
So, initially during the evening, it's dry towards the southeast, but we'll be watching developments
01:17
over northern France very closely, because that's where these thunderstorms are likely
01:21
to develop and drift northeastwards.
01:23
As always, there's an element of uncertainty in terms of the exact track of these systems.
01:28
We won't know the finer details precisely until it starts to take place.
01:33
But the signals are that it's across east Anglia and the far southeast of England, so Kent, Essex,
01:39
Suffolk, Norfolk, where we're likely to see the greatest risk of impacts from the torrential
01:46
rain, large hail, one, two centimetres in diameter, frequent lightning, and gusty winds, 50 mile
01:54
per hour wind gusts, perhaps more with some of the most lively thunderstorms.
01:59
And so, all of those elements could cause impacts across parts of east Anglia and the southeast
02:04
in particular during the hours of darkness.
02:07
But of course, the amber thunderstorm warning reflects the fact that it's a risk of these
02:14
impacts occurring, not a guarantee, because we'll have to keep an eye on developments across
02:19
northern France and see exactly where they're going to end up as they drift northwards.
02:23
And even if you're not in the amber zone, there are yellow warnings in force for thunderstorms
02:28
across many other parts of the UK.
02:30
Areas of heavy rain and thundery showers drifting north across parts of western England, Wales,
02:35
and then into Scotland and Northern Ireland by the end of the night.
02:38
Meanwhile, later in the night, anything that does develop across the southeastern quarter
02:43
tends to drift into the North Sea as an area of heavy rain.
02:47
And it's going to be a muggy night wherever you are, whether you've got the thundery rain
02:50
or any clear spells that happen to continue.
02:53
Temperatures not drifting much below 16 or 17 Celsius.
02:58
We start off Saturday with areas of heavy rain, thundery showers, and some very wet weather
03:03
in places.
03:04
Not everywhere will be affected, but you can see how messy it becomes during Saturday morning,
03:08
with an area of low pressure in place across the UK.
03:11
Persistent rain for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
03:13
Some thundery showers for northern and central England.
03:16
Brighter skies developing across the south and southeast.
03:20
By the end of the afternoon, it's largely dry and sunny towards East Anglia and the southeast,
03:25
with temperatures still reaching the mid-twenties in places.
03:27
We've still got relatively warm and humid air here.
03:30
Then later Saturday, any rain and thundery downpours tend to slowly ease, but we do still
03:36
have a wet end to the day across parts of Scotland as well as Northern England.
03:41
Higher towards the south with clear spells, and that's a sign of a change on the way for
03:46
later the week in the weekend.
03:47
We've got higher pressure starting to build towards the south, and so a fine day in the
03:52
south on Sunday, and the more settled weather develops more widely across the UK as we go
03:57
into next week.
