13 June - national forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Morning. While it may be beach weather for some today, there are more storms in the offing.
00:06Quite a warm start to the day and that heat and humidity will continue to build.
00:10We had some hefty downpours through yesterday.
00:12Overnight they've tended to ease off.
00:14Still a few showers in the west this morning and we could well see some thunderstorms breaking out around the middle of the day,
00:20in particular across parts of Northern Ireland.
00:22A few more showers then drift north into western Scotland.
00:25But the main focus for the heaviest downpours will be spreading up from the south.
00:30Before they arrive though, a good part of England, Wales, southern Scotland having a dry and a fine day with some sunshine.
00:37Not as breezy in these eastern areas as it was yesterday either.
00:41With light winds it'll feel pretty sticky I imagine as the temperatures across eastern England peak at 27, 28, maybe 29.
00:49Small chance we could hit 30 Celsius.
00:52It's not as hot further west because there's a bit more cloud around.
00:56But still for most places feeling pretty sticky, pretty humid.
01:00A little cooler and fresher in the southwest.
01:02And certainly it will turn cooler as the downpours arrive.
01:06We're expecting another batch of thunderstorms to push up from the south through the afternoon across southwest England,
01:12into south Wales, perhaps into parts of the Midlands.
01:14And then another zone of thunderstorms could move up from France into the southeast and across parts of East Anglia during this evening.
01:22So the potential for a lot of spray, a lot of surface water on the roads.
01:26These storms could be quite violent, packing hailstones and gusty winds to boot.
01:31So something to be aware of, the potential for local flooding and certainly some pretty grim travelling conditions.
01:37As always, with thunderstorms, they're going to be hit and miss.
01:40So not everywhere in the warning areas will catch these downpours.
01:44But where they do occur, they could cause some disruption.
01:46And they won't stop across the south.
01:48They will continue to march northward.
01:49So northern England joining in with those heavy downpours through the night and eventually pushing into parts of southern Scotland also.
01:57As you can imagine, with the warmth and the humidity and everything wafting up from the south,
02:01it will be another pretty warm night with temperatures certainly in towns and cities across the south and southeast
02:07staying up into the mid-teens, a little more comfortable further north.
02:13Into the weekend, and it's still going to be pretty messy.
02:16Low pressure dominating, still quite warm and humid air.
02:18Still some thunderstorms around.
02:20So we do have Met Office yellow warnings in place even into the weekend.
02:24This could be very wet for parts of northern England, northern Ireland.
02:27Some further downpours to come and spread slowly north across Scotland.
02:30By this stage, more uncertainty about exactly where those downpours are going to be.
02:34So do keep up to date with the forecast, particularly if you've got plans for Saturday.
02:38As skies brighten further south across parts of England and Wales,
02:42well, that could spark further afternoon hefty showers.
02:46But I suspect much of eastern England, a good part of southern England,
02:50although it may start a bit cloudy and showery, should turn brighter for the afternoon
02:54with some good spells of sunshine coming through.
02:56And it won't be as sticky, won't be as hot temperatures, a good few degrees down.
03:00Still probably feeling quite humid, but not as hot and humid as it will be on Friday.
03:06And that's turning fresher theme will continue as we head into Sunday as well.
03:09You can see that swirl of cloud and rain that is from an area of low pressure
03:14that will continue to track northwards during Saturday night,
03:18taking the rain away from the UK.
03:21There'll still be a few showers around on Sunday,
03:23but much cooler air is following on behind.
03:25So it won't be as humid for Sunday.
03:27It will be quite a bit fresher.
03:28And look at this area of high pressure is trying to build in from the southwest.
03:32As we head into next week, that promises quite a bit of fine weather.
03:35But that's all to come.
03:36We've still got plenty going on in the short term.
03:39Do check out those warnings for yourself.
