12 May - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there, we've started the week with a brief interlude between two spells of dry and sunny
00:08weather. High pressure has been dominating our weather, but low pressure has appeared
00:12from the south during the last couple of days. That's brought some showers and thunderstorms,
00:16those tending to fade after the sun goes down, and then lengthy clear spells overnight, although
00:20the old shower in places couldn't be ruled out. Some low cloud will creep into the north
00:25and the east of Scotland and northeast England as well, and temperatures are all dipping
00:30to the high single figures or low double figures. So, a bright start for most. First thing Tuesday,
00:36certainly more sunshine around across central and southern and western parts of the UK, and
00:41will keep the sunny skies in many places going into the afternoon. Now, the low cloud across
00:45northeastern parts of the UK tends to retreat back to the coast, and the cloud across the
00:51south Wales into central southern England will tend to bubble up as temperatures rise into
00:55the afternoon. That could give a few more scattered showers and thunderstorms. Again, these will
01:01be hit and miss. I think fewer of them compared with the last couple of days, but where you
01:07do catch a shower, there's always the risk of some heavier rain in a short space of time,
01:12as well as some hail and lightning. But no particularly useful widespread rain to talk about, and actually
01:21away from this small part of the UK, south Wales, into parts of southern England, it's
01:26a dry and sunny day once again. A little cooler on the north sea coast, temperatures elsewhere
01:30generally a degree or so down. On Mondays, the warmest spot could be the West Highlands, up
01:35to 26 or 27 Celsius. Into Tuesday evening, the showers rumble on for a couple of hours
01:42into south Wales as well as the Midlands, but eventually they fade away. And then a dry
01:47night for most, although one or two showers could reappear into parts of Cornel, and some
01:52drizzly showers running down the north sea coast as well as low cloud once again creeps inland.
01:59But for many it's a clear night and perhaps cooler night compared with recent nights, with temperatures
02:04dipping into the mid to high single figures. Nevertheless, we've got high pressure reasserting
02:10itself once again as the low that brought the thundery showers moves away. That high building
02:15from the north, that means a bit of a east to northeasterly breeze, always cooler on the
02:20north sea coast. But where we've got sunshine elsewhere, well the highest temperatures will
02:24once again be in the west and the south. Now we start off Wednesday with low cloud across
02:30parts of northern England and Scotland. That tends to run its way down the north sea coast,
02:35so perhaps entering Norfolk by the afternoon. Otherwise, it's sunny skies on the whole. One
02:40or two showers could again form across parts of the south west, most especially parts of
02:45Cornwall and West Devon. But they are few and far between compared with recent days. For
02:52the vast majority, it's simply a dry and sunny day with high pressure once again building, and
02:58temperatures reaching 20 or 21 Celsius. So a little bit fresher, and on that north sea coast
03:02with a brisk breeze, it's going to feel considerably cooler. And we keep that high pressure into
03:07Thursday, Friday and indeed the weekends. That means it's going to stay dry for the rest of
03:12the week and there will be plenty more sunshine to come as well.
