00:00This is not a game. This is a 12-week job interview. Never, ever, ever underestimate me.
00:15Fourteen people came to London in search of a job.
00:19I don't like liars. I don't like cheats. I don't like bullshitters. I don't like schmoozers. I don't like arse lickers.
00:34They've come to battle it out for a job with Sir Alan Sugar.
00:38I would have told you to piss off.
00:40Tough and uncompromising, Sir Alan is at the top of his game with a global empire worth £700 million.
00:49He's offering one job with a six-figure salary.
00:53I'm gonna fucking win this night if it kills me.
00:55To get it, they'll have to work and live together and face a weekly business task.
01:01You can't fucking fire me!
01:03Do you feel the pressure is building?
01:05This is the ultimate job interview.
01:07You're fired. You're fired. You're fired.
01:17Last week...
01:18There's a pattern forming and it's not looking good for the girls.
01:21The dynamics of the group are four very loud-mouthed girls.
01:25Unless we see that and work with it, we're still gonna be in the sheer.
01:28After the girls team lost to the boys for the second week running,
01:32Sir Alan imposed a corporate reshuffle.
01:34Adele, I want you to pick three boys.
01:37And Matthew, I want you to pick two of the girls.
01:41With the teams mixed for the first time, Sir Alan set their weekly task.
01:45Buying.
01:47What we're looking for...
01:48They had to negotiate the best price on the same ten items.
01:5128 pounds. Okay, a deal.
01:54As one project manager, Matthew delegated well and played to the strength of his team.
01:59Thank you very much. We'll take it.
02:02Fucking brilliant. Come here.
02:04Right, Miranda, you do not...
02:06On the other team, Adele's dominant leadership created friction.
02:09Respect for me if you want to question what I ask you to do, that's all.
02:12You asked me to make a phone call. You didn't say with what content.
02:15Yeah, that's it, Miranda, I'm not prepared to discuss it anymore.
02:16That's fine.
02:17In the boardroom, Adele's team lost and her colleagues were quick to point the finger.
02:22Who let the team down? I would say Adele.
02:25I think Adele. I would have to say Adele.
02:27Not looking good, is it?
02:28It's easy to have a scapegoat in this situation.
02:31Adele fought back and chose Miranda and Ben to join her in the firing line.
02:35You let me down, Adele. You have let me down.
02:38But I'll tell you what disappoints me the most.
02:40Lack of respect for the leader.
02:42And on that basis, Miranda, you're fired.
02:45Miranda became the third casualty of the boardroom.
02:49Now 11 remain to fight for the chance to become the apprentice.
02:54Back at the house, the candidates are waiting to see who survived the boardroom firing.
03:06When Sir Ellen asked all of us a question, we were all articulate, polite and direct.
03:11No one was babbling, no one was, apart from Adele really, was stuttering.
03:15She panicked. She needs time to analyse and get things ready.
03:19These kind of tasks, you need to be acting like that.
03:21And I don't think she's got that.
03:23If Adele comes back today, I'll be very shocked.
03:34I'm barking about you again. You don't get rid of me that easily.
03:38Loving you, mate. Loving you, mate.
03:41She's giving me options to get rid of me, but...
03:43I'm surprised. How are you?
03:45I am, I'll be honest with you. How are you?
03:47I think the look of shock and horror when she walked in with Ben, you spoke volumes.
03:51Nobody could believe that for the second time she's walked back in when she should have been out long before.
03:55I think it's good for you for coming back with your head held high and because it will be a difficult situation.
04:01You know, for you to kind of come back thinking, knowing that people thought, oh, it's going to be Adele, so...
04:07I'm very surprised at the decision today, but I think ultimately it goes down to the fact that when you are in that boardroom, you have to defend yourself eloquently.
04:16It shows that she's a fighter and that's a good personality trait in business, so...
04:22At least I know definitely she won't give up in any given situation, but still shocked.
04:26I'm happy to work every game, but we need to deal with what we dealt with at the boardroom to make sure that that's all got out of the way.
04:32I did think after the discussion, when I left the ballroom, I didn't think you were coming back.
04:36I'll be perfectly honest with you. I fought with Miranda and I'll say that to your face as I've said behind it.
04:40She knows she's made enemies and she knows that they don't want her.
04:45And it doesn't make good for Team Dynamics for the next round.
04:49She may knuckle down, she may forget about it, but, you know, we'll say the slate is clean and that's how it happens.
04:55That's the rules of the game. But I wonder whether or not that's true.
04:59Today, Sir Alan is calling on Harrod's owner, Mohamed El-Fayed, for a bit of help.
05:18They've been hatching a plan to test the candidates' retail skills.
05:21Thursday afternoon. The candidates have been relaxing on a day off, but that's about to change.
05:39Hello, it's Francis here from Sir Alan's office.
05:41He's on his way to meet you at the Mini Market just down the road. You'll all need to leave in 20 minutes.
05:47Perfect. Thanks, bye-bye.
05:51You've got to get your arse in gear, I'm afraid. We've got to leave in 20 minutes.
05:54I've got the impression it's going to be something like stacking shelves or warehousing.
06:09Sir Alan leaves Harrod's and heads towards the candidates.
06:12He knows that running any shop, big or small, takes the same basic skills of stock selection, display and, crucially, selling.
06:28Good afternoon, everybody.
06:32Good afternoon, Alan.
06:35Well, you might be wondering what we're doing here, what the significance of this shop is.
06:39The significance is that the proprietor has got, believe it or not, a very broad portfolio of skills in running his business.
06:48So the task that I'm going to set you now is about your total organisation skills in a retail environment.
06:54Now, I've got a friend of mine who's got a corner shop. In fact, you could argue it's a double corner shop.
07:01It's called Harrod's. And Mr. Fayyad has very kindly agreed to allocate two retail shopping spaces for each of the teams.
07:09And you are going to choose, from a whole range of products, what you're going to be selling.
07:14Mr. Fayyad is going to allocate some staff and people like that to work with you.
07:18You will show them the utmost respect. Do you understand?
07:22You know, I don't like people talking down onto people. These people are helping us, okay?
07:26So in this case, teams, the one that takes the most money is going to win.
07:32The losing team, one of you, is going to get fired.
07:39By early evening, they're back at the house. Each team has to choose a project manager.
07:57After three weeks watching previous leaders being grilled and put up for firing, the candidates are wary of taking on the role.
08:04If you don't mind me saying so, I think Tim should be project manager.
08:10Tim's already been here. I've done it before. I don't mind doing it again. I'll say that now.
08:14Tim, you've led us before. You've done a good job. So I have no objection to it.
08:17I might be again. Let's do it then. So Tim's the man. Yeah?
08:21Yeah. Good stuff.
08:23Who, is there anybody here who would like to be project manager?
08:26I don't mind. I mean, I'd love you to do it actually.
08:35I'm not sure.
08:37Are you not looking forward to doing it?
08:40No, no, no. I'm more than happy to do it and I'm very excited about this project.
08:43If you guys would like me to do it.
08:45Yes, let's do it.
08:47Well, if you'd like me to do it, then I'd be delighted to...
08:50There we go then.
08:51Lead the team.
08:52Excellent. Well done, James.
08:53All right.
08:588pm. Both teams have to make plans for the next two days.
09:03One day to select products, the following day to sell them.
09:07Because people are going to walk past if there isn't anything there.
09:11Yep.
09:12There needs to be something which is bringing them in
09:14and we can get a very, very quick and cohesive marketing campaign in place to get them in.
09:19I think my biggest rival in this group is Ben and Sebastian.
09:24Dolly birds. I mean, that's my first four.
09:26I mean, my game plan is very much to cover my back as much as I possibly can.
09:30It's about me doing my job first and then team second.
09:35We want to target the audience that walks into Harris. Why? Because they're already there.
09:38We're not the...
09:39Sebastian now.
09:40He comes up with these ideas and he will have ten ideas and you'll think,
09:43Oh, child, you're talking nonsense.
09:44But then you have one idea and it's like,
09:46Oh, yeah, I didn't think of that. And it's a gem.
09:48This is an interesting little concept, Brian.
09:50In terms of signage, most people think the signage is on the wall.
09:52Can we do signage on the floor? Can we do signage on the ceilings?
09:55That's a good point.
09:56If you spend over £100 with us, you will get a free £10 voucher.
10:01Exactly.
10:02So that's exactly...
10:03And quite frankly, if we can't...
10:04For James, it's his first time as project manager
10:07and having agreed to lead the impact team, he now has to get them into line.
10:11Actually, I think that differentiates...
10:13Can I... Can I... Can I...
10:14Let him write it once he's got it. Let's all talk one after the other.
10:17The two more challenging characters will be Matthew and Paul.
10:24Matthew is very left field in his ideas and views
10:27and sometimes that can derail the team.
10:30We've got to do some promotional work.
10:32If it's a sandwich board man or if it's a leafleting man,
10:34it's something like that outside Harrods.
10:36You know, we talk about barking up trees.
10:38Yeah.
10:39And sometimes you bark up wrong trees.
10:40Okay.
10:41And sometimes you're in a different forest.
10:42Okay.
10:43I do actually think we're in a different forest here.
10:45The movement is in a certain direction.
10:48Mine is opposite.
10:49Okay.
10:50Paul has certain things over which he gets frustrated about.
10:53This evening, you know, we had a discussion where he was looking very sort of po-faced.
10:56And I had to sort of extract out of him what he was upset about or worried about.
11:00You're not smiling.
11:01I'm not pleased about you're not smiling, mate.
11:04I think this is going to be our hardest task by a million miles.
11:07I think it's going to be hard.
11:08James is an intelligent person that could easily lead this team.
11:12But I don't think he was the right person for this task.
11:15Every single losing team in the past has had personal frictions.
11:19That has been the defining and deciding factor.
11:23Tim's team, First Forte, burn the midnight oil, trying to come up with a business manifesto to give them the edge.
11:30You're fumbling about doing this.
11:32Yes.
11:33It's taken us an hour and 25 minutes to do this.
11:35We haven't got that too much.
11:36The main thing we have to do before we go to see it today is our mission statement.
11:41We need that mission statement.
11:42The fact that they're still in there at 11 o'clock after three hours, you know, talking, I think to myself, what are they talking about?
11:48Because they don't even know really what they're going to be doing.
11:51It's a clear objective.
11:52Our objective is to turn over the most money in the allocated area of Harrods store.
11:56As a business, we want to be recognised as a company that can enhance, build and develop the existing Harrods experience by utilising our knowledge and business acumen to ultimately increase revenue.
12:05I mean, that is it.
12:07That is it.
12:08That's our mission statement.
12:09We're not just coming in to make money.
12:11We're coming in to enhance the Harrods experience.
12:13I think that's really key.
12:15It's not cheesy.
12:17That's not cheesy.
12:18It's professional.
12:19It's alright.
12:20When you do that mission statement, if you type that up, maybe on PowerPoint with a nice picture or something.
12:24Yep.
12:358am, planning day.
12:38The teams must select the products they'll have to sell tomorrow.
12:42Throughout the two days they'll be kept on their toes by the store's general merchandise director, Mary Gay McKee.
12:48Good morning everybody.
12:49Good morning.
12:50Good morning.
12:51Good morning.
12:52Good morning.
12:53Welcome to Harrods.
12:55A million square feet, seven floors, 330 departments and 56 buyers who travel around the world finding the best merchandise for the most luxurious department store in the world.
13:08So we don't just sell to our customers, we give them an experience.
13:20Mary Gay has selected two almost identical areas at either end of the lower ground floor, where mainly Harrods branded goods are sold to tourists.
13:31but the teams must negotiate between themselves which area they want both
13:37areas are equally fair in size and in potential each team has been given a
13:46six hundred pound seed fund petty cash for marketing and promotion Tim's team
13:52want area to but I'm a plan let's say let's say they want number two we want
13:57number two turn around to them and say okay look you give us your seed money and
14:01whether you have number two yeah if they want number one yeah fine you know they
14:05want number one fine there's no argument yeah no if there is no you can still try
14:09and get some tea money off pretend that you yeah okay yeah yeah yeah yeah you
14:13know what you're saying to yeah comfortable comfortable it's time to do
14:18backings good you very good which room do you want well I was going to ask you do
14:23you have a preference I asked you the question first why are you asking me
14:27why don't you tell me which which room do you want will you let us have it if I
14:31say yeah which one it was my question and we'll see we would like to go for area
14:37one okay well I suggest if you want area one we're willing to negotiate that we
14:42will have some of your seed money a proportion of your seed money and then
14:45we'll give it over there's no deal to be done I'm not negotiating but the fact is
14:48we've both got six hundred if you want it so much why don't you offer me some of
14:52your seed money because I put the proposition to you first and I've
14:54rejected it flower let out can I consult with my team and I'll be back to you
14:59yeah okay they are the most competitive teams I have ever seen those two team
15:03leaders I think we need to have some fun over the next two days because those two
15:06team leaders are you know determined both of them to win okay yes have you
15:12decided an area and we have have we we'd like area one if possible and you'd like
15:19area two area two I think it was a good strategy it was a strategy didn't come
15:23off but we still got the area we wanted they got the area they wanted would have
15:27just been slightly better off had we managed to take some of the seed money
15:29with us no what we're going to do is we're going to go through the list and
15:32we're going to pick out what sorts with 500 products to choose from James's team
15:37split up to see what's on offer you do be careful classical Tim's team sit tight
15:49and study the product list given to both teams to create variety teams must select
15:58at least 40 percent of goods from brands other than Harrods own label
16:07I am so loving this okay fabulous okay brilliant guys are we quite happy then
16:18from this section we're going to take those that that and that little doggy yeah
16:23yeah yeah we happy with that excellent moving on
16:27you sold like 150 of them yeah sorry you sold 150 this morning yes and what about
16:36mr. floppy dog thing mr. floppy dog he's very popular this the tiny one at 795 he's
16:41really really right okay so if we look I've done if we look at my product list
16:48okay we have a large Christmas bear 60 inches teddy bear of sweater and it's
16:55Harrods item how much is it 1,200 pounds that could potentially just attract attention
16:59Mary Gay and Harrods sales manager Nigel are getting worried about Tim's team
17:04in there I'm a little bit concerned about first 40 I mean it's 40 minutes since we gave them their lists
17:10and these guys are still sitting down talking about the product the others are well on their
17:15way to looking at everything on every floor before they sit down and discuss first of all
17:20they need to move they need to move we both agree on that there's a one o'clock deadline for both teams
17:28to get their completed product list to marigay with just over an hour to go and
17:34a million square feet of store to cover Tim and his team finally decide to look around
17:40yeah come we've got a go now I mean we've said it let's go thank you so out of the whole store can
17:51you show me you the 10 best-selling lines PVC bags PVC bags so you PVC base is definitely we need the
17:59bags James's team have chosen what they want to sell now they must make sure 40 percent of their
18:07products are not Harrods own brand Paul is in charge of calculations
18:1330 38 percent right so we've just got a couple of things to get rid of two percent out hang on I've
18:22just got rid of three things yeah who's gonna come and see someone tell me where she is okay what
18:28I don't think you have done that's right because what you've done is 55 how did you do it 22 plus 55
18:37is 77 22 divided by 55 times 100 no no no no I hold my hands up mentally with me isn't isn't my best
18:44but you see quick things quick sums I can work out very quickly you know if somebody owes me rent I know
18:51how much rent they owe me I know how much interest to stick on top and I know where to find them
18:5415 minutes before the one o'clock deadline and Tim's team is first at the office with its product
19:03selection so they get first choice of any big one-off items right I can see here that you're taking the
19:1210,000 pounds piano and the large Christmas bear one-off so that's from that area we can lose tea if you
19:20want to get rid of it quick quick come on let's go sorry we've got to go
19:25fuck it I'll cross them out on the way down okay right come with me somebody
19:33oh that's stressful
19:35James and Raj make it to Marigay's office with only a minute to spare so you're going to have the
19:55teddy bear the last teddy bear with a sweater now the only issue with that is that the previous team
19:58have already picked that I'm happy to make another selection very so you can make another selection
20:02from there I think this looks okay give it to my PA and she can put it on the system for you let's see
20:07if it comes up to the right percentage oh here we go both teams can spend their 600 pound seed fund on
20:15promotional activities Tim's team deploy professional headhunter Ben Leary to lure a face painter from the
20:23toy department I'll talk to her yeah wonder if we could work with you if we could bring you down to
20:30our area because it's going to be a lot of toys it's going to be a lot of teddy bears it's gonna be a
20:35lot of children orientated stuff and madness yeah and we wonder if we could work with you on that yeah I'm
20:43available tomorrow yeah we recognize that things like a piano and a live pianist could be a real
20:54crowd drawer so we're actually going to use this digital baby grand have it as our central point
21:00and hey if we can sell the piano that would be great Nigel supervising the product list for James's
21:08team spots the maths still don't add up you've actually selected 76 percent of your products
21:17are Harrods you need to decrease the number of Harrods products selected so we start at 83 we're now at 85
21:24versus 63 Paul did the numbers in the way he thought was appropriate what became very clear however as we
21:35walking out the door was in fact he'd done incorrectly so I think it's a bit harsh to to blame Paul but I will
21:52it's been a tough day for everyone but once back at the house it gets worse for Adele when her husband
22:02calls missing you like mad I'm worried about my Nana how is none ten days before I came into the house
22:12my nan got taken into hospital and as far as I'm aware she's doing okay but when you're very very close
22:18to somebody as I have always been to my nan it's it's a bit emotionally distressing so
22:26that has been on my mind a lot during my stay here at the house unfortunately some people here they
22:35do think about their families at home and it really gets on them and eats them up and so consequently
22:39those sorts of people aren't devoting a hundred percent of themselves to their tasks and they are
22:43obviously then the weak links the teams must get an early night tomorrow will be a long day
22:50the two teams have four hours to display their products and in volume retailing presentation is
23:14everything clues on how to do it are all around them Tim's team have ordered bears that range from
23:33595 to over a thousand pounds they're hoping this giant one will be a crowd puller he's gonna have some
23:41of the floor but we can sit him on one of our boxes and these are quite low down and then he doesn't
23:44look as if he's got his legs spread which looks a bit vulgar I got no energy to be thinking about
23:50that this time of the morning I'll help you put it on a box or see what it looks like what were these
23:54green things are those going to put out or you want which green things they're green teddies I think
23:59just scatter them around and just make this kind of look a bit more ceiling yeah like someone else's
24:03department okay Matthew yes sorry to be firm but we're running out of time I think boxes need to be put
24:09away product needs to be put out you just get the right product in the right phase the general feeling
24:15towards Matthew is that we're fond of him because he's got such a kind heart but he's very difficult
24:19with it and it's quite exhausting to be around him he's so demanding we have finished doing what we're
24:27doing by and large and ours has a fairly professional air about it but I went I had to pass by the other
24:33the other side and it's not very good I've got to say it's pretty rubbish well yeah exactly so you did
24:43it so much longer you have to do things twice eagle-eyed floor manager Sean is overseeing the product
24:54display of Tim's team I would certainly pay more attention to the emptiness in that by okay and the
25:01merchandising that you've done here here there are some definite issues with some of your like that
25:08there no he's saying there's an issue with Harrod staff have been instructed to give guidance but not
25:13all the answers and there's a little bit of a gap there can't you just tell us where we've gone wrong
25:18because I thought that you need to pay more attention to detail yeah you're telling us now
25:22I thought that's what you were doing now telling us where we've gone wrong you would you were like
25:25this over an hour ago you say I'll tell you at nine so can you not tell us now I think I think
25:32you've got enough time to sort out the problems yourselves I know what that oh god
25:43Mary Gay arrives to see if James's team have done any better how we're doing I would fire anybody that
25:58produced that as a table and I would most definitely fire anybody that produced that as a table we've got
26:03795 sign the bears actually 1995 trading standards they wouldn't be too happy wouldn't be too happy with
26:12you please do not tell me that there is a floppy dog hanging you do realize that that could
26:28potentially traumatize a child walking a hanging dog somebody coming round and just poo-pooing your idea
26:39first thing in the morning it's just just so depressing and I I'm a very positive person I've
26:44got so much energy and even I felt like well if you think he's any good you know why didn't give us
26:49any help James's team have less than 30 minutes to rearrange their display before the doors open to the
26:57public I don't think she objected to some of the little ones in the top actually well I'm too scared
27:09to go and do anything now so let's not have any creative thoughts on an average Saturday 35,000 people
27:21will come shopping here they'll spend one and a half million pounds many will be tourists heading
27:28for the lower ground floor where the two teams are waiting Marigay has one last pearl of wisdom
27:34so the only thing I would say as well is it's very very important to be as nice as possible to the
27:43customers because we have a saying in Harrods which is teeth make smiles and smiles make sales you
27:51cannot get a big sale if you're not smiling okay and may the best team win you can be two sales
27:58pouring just quickly we're open for business you need yes we're focused now okay absolutely right so
28:05you'll five past ten the attractions organized by Tim's team are already pulling in the crowds the
28:13they've got their baby grand piano a face painter staff from the toy department to help sell their
28:22demonstration lines and the largest teddy bear in the store have you seen the smaller ones that we've
28:29got just in the corner we've got smaller ones which are so soft do you want me to get you some at 10
28:36are you free the best bar that we had of that list was that bear that bear stopped everybody in its
28:43track even if they just smile laugh it gives you that second to just go to them it's like okay like
28:47that bed you want another bed which is over there which is good it's for you thank you looks like
28:55going well it's about 200 pound taken already today Ben picks up some selling tips
29:01if someone's holding two items in their hand and they're looking at another item you go up and
29:08give them a basket because you're then making them tell about put more stuff in but it's taken a bit of
29:13time to try and learn that sort of technique seems obvious but if you've never done it before it's
29:17not we've got a pianist we've got the face painter we've got the magic Sir Alan's advisors Nick and
29:23Margaret are on the shop floor watching both teams Tim's head start impresses Nick is it down to
29:31location is it down to salesmanship is it down to product I don't know but at the moment they're
29:35out selling impact heavily with business failing to take off James and his team stand and watch as Tim's
29:46team keep selling there's a lot of activity going on over there they've got off quickly but it's a
30:00long ways today it's a 10-hour day I think we need to review our strategy a little bit I think otherwise
30:15we're just going to be down please get more aggressive there's one a thing that we can get
30:18as long as we get money in the till I don't care what we do James searches out the manager of the
30:26toy department for some advice have you got any of the pigs or the rabbits no we weren't allowed to
30:33buy those we've got the floppy dogs in various sizes you know we'd love to get rid of those we've
30:38actually got some mulberry bags as well how do you get rid of those and a 2,000 pound hamper did you get
30:42any demonstration lines no have we got all the wrong products yeah you've got too many soft toys you
30:49haven't got enough demonstration lines I've got I'm one of the teams with me and they're having a bit
30:56of a hard time downstairs I think the the other crew are kind of doing better than they are but
30:59they've chosen some really dodgy product they've got all soft toys they've got sloppy dogs coming out
31:04there is okay so you'll try and get Raphael and Nathalie yeah okay cheers bye why don't you do buy a big
31:12Christmas have you got both sizes at the Christmas bear buy a big and a small or buy three of the three
31:16items in the Christmas bear range and they get a gift voucher yeah good plan you know that's what
31:20I would do yeah and how do we advertise that given that we're not allowed to get signs and things
31:24printed up and everything else you've got to be gobby I mean you really need to get someone to go and
31:28just be approaching every customer that's what would probably what we would do that's very kind
31:32thank you to it while the toy department try to come up with some attractions James takes Paul for
31:45a break I'm not feeling despondent I'm just not feeling we haven't peaked yet have we we've made
31:51steady progress today whereas they've got off to a flyer but I think their flyer will start to slow
31:55down if we sell all our stock with one basically yeah I think when I last looked there were quite
32:01a lot of things on the shelves I noticed that the toy department have found a bear costume it's
32:08designed to be worn by a small woman but James has other plans how long would you recommend somebody
32:15does this for 20 minutes max is now yeah 20 minutes to take a break 20 minutes break right okay I'll give
32:20it a go if you go down in the woods today you're sure of a big surprise if you go down in the woods
32:33today you better go in disguise okay if I take a teddy bear put it into a child's hand takes a rotten dad
32:51to say you're not having it and yank it out so that's what I was trying to do you know I was trying to be
32:55fun to the crowd but I was also remembering that we were there to shift eddies she'd like you to touch
32:59the softest teddy bear in Harrods and she'd like you to go and have a look at her there's one bear
33:09in particular that if you touch is absolutely soft to the touch and people you just as soon as you give
33:14it to them they're like oh so we're just encouraging people to touch it and just get get rid of them that
33:18way really Paul disguised as Rosie the bear does the trick Phil here he is gorgeous Tim's team have
33:32been so busy they've ignored their face painter Christine she's been working flat out for five
33:38and a half hours so she's off for a break hello do you like one of these Adele's been looking for
33:46her she's got a customer waiting and she's complained to Sean where's she gone face painter
33:54had gone to the toilet but Adele thought it was Harrod's responsibility to manage her staff
33:59whereas in fact it's their responsibility to manage their own staff those guys it's like getting blood
34:04out of a stone you know it's just ridiculous I've just lost their face paint it well didn't lose
34:09rent to Lou and they wouldn't give me any information there's been a little bit of conflict on the
34:14floor Adele herself has become quite pressured in some situations that is just my general demeanor it's
34:23not if it's offensive to some people then it's not intended to be offensive but that is just my
34:28demeanor for James the toy department have found some entertainers and they seem to be working we saw
34:40what was going on the other side and that a lot of commotion was attracting people so we acted
34:45accordingly hello where are you from we didn't copy them we just use their idea more effectively
34:51which bag do you prefer whatever you say I'll get it she likes I'm much more confident about how
35:04we're going because I think the teams just really just throwing everything at it busy bears need breaks too
35:13I was in tears from the moment I saw him in the costume to the time he took it off he was magnificent
35:22get off your stink now get your head on and come on we haven't got time to piss around this is
35:29valuable selling time it's good job I didn't come here for the sympathy vote this is a girl's outfit
35:36by the way my feet are sticking out they're size four I'm a nine you are fantastic fun don't forget
35:45it's 20 minutes on 20 minutes off for 15 Marigay calls Tim and James to give them a sales report for
36:01the last six hours of trading I think you're both going to be quite surprised by the results first
36:09forte mm-hmm have taken at four o'clock 1659 pounds and team impact have sold 2141 pounds so you've got
36:21a lot of catching up to do yep I'm telling you one full shopping basket could make the difference at
36:26the end of the day impact has sold 123 items and grossed in 2141 I've got some figures and we are
36:39keep on going those are 2141 that's right in some ways it will make them more determined because they
36:47will like oh my god we've got this uphill struggle to do but I think it will also demoralize them
36:52secretly inside or then they won't say so okay let's get ready get baskets every customer come
36:57through that door you stop them the trading results are the final straw for Adele you've got one
37:10hour left to go you've got to try your hardest all right I know but I am that fast and go in so
37:16where is Adele you all right yeah thank you it's nothing to do you don't about it all right thanks
37:27Tim she's a bit stressed at the moment with regards to all the stuff that's happening so I
37:32haven't spoken to her specifically exactly about what happened downstairs so I don't know why she
37:36was upset before but I'm obviously giving her hug said just listen go and chill for five minutes in
37:40the stockroom just take a breather okay but I mean you could you could buy you could buy one of these
37:49and one of these little ones that's that's fine okay okay all right thank you then more used to a
37:57desk job is another member of Tim's team finding it hard work he's never sold in a shop this precise
38:05point I'm feeling very very tired I've never sold anything to anyone in a retail environment in my
38:11life it's not something I'm used to at all which ones would you want a basket to put them in I've never
38:18dealt with public so I mean it's as far removed from what I do is you know feeding animals at the zoo
38:23both teams still have stock on their shelves and petty cash left which they now exchange for
38:35gift vouchers to offer as an incentive to customers hello if you get two of the bags you get a free
38:42five-pound voucher just to let you also know madam that if you spend thirty pounds with us today we
38:48will give you a ten pound free Harrods gift voucher both teams have changed their tactics in the gift
38:54voucher scenario with the offers that they're giving customers but now things are getting desperate and
38:59they're trying everything they can to make the most money I don't know how much there is six yes yeah
39:03we're gonna get rid of all of them if you spend thirty pounds in this section yeah we will give
39:08you a ten pound gift voucher so if you buy a teddy we give you five pounds any two items from this
39:14section and you get a free five-pound voucher if you buy something else for five pounds we will give
39:23you that ten pound gift voucher now in your hand anything that you like it got to ridiculous levels
39:32of all I think it was by twenty quid's worth of stock and you get ten pounds worth of vouchers
39:37Gordon Bennett that was a deal of the day at Harrods that's one purchase and we can give you ten
39:42pounds now can I have ten pounds please I've made a purchase thank you there you go another receipt the
39:50vouchers are also working well for Tim's team as they try to claw back the 400 pounds they were
39:55losing by at 4 p.m. even Adele has pulled herself together and is selling hard and the bear in the
40:03bag's quite nice as well that's nine ninety five that's less that's it's working now I'm getting
40:10every sale almost there's the odd one that still wants to browse but they usually end up at the till
40:13so I do think that we should hopefully win this task providing we keep this level of energy up
40:20as 7 p.m. draws closer James's team give one final push to try and make sure they don't end up in the
40:33firing I'm tempted to say look by a mulberry bag and I give you an adequate for the vouchers and if
40:41you buy one of our weekend bags that I will give you sixty pounds worth of Harrods vouchers straight
40:47away they are mulberry that's about 250 pounds we will give you 50 pounds in your cash in vouchers
40:55if you buy one today so that's about 250 pounds guys I'm giving 50 pounds to the first purchaser
41:01that's what is it it's a race against time it's a race against time this one is 275
41:12I'm prepared to give 60 if the lady buys now brilliant thank you ma'am excellent deal well done
41:23I think the salesperson of the year award goes to sigh who has just been unbelievable she is an
41:31unbelievable sales lady and there's one more team member for James to thank
41:36that I have to say was a sterling sterling effort I have to congratulate you don't congratulate me
41:49congratulate Rosie there
41:50for now there's time to relax before Sir Alan calls the teams to his boardroom tomorrow
42:10the question on everybody's mind is who's won
42:15I'm still silently confident that we could have pulled it off because we worked so so hard when I
42:23saw the other team and what they had going on in their area it really it kind of knocked me a
42:29little bit every time we looked over into their section which was about 50 feet away their tills
42:35were surrounded quite frankly I think that they did have some really good ideas that quite frankly we
42:39just didn't looking at them compared to us during the day I think we were all very surprised when
42:50we got the middle-of-the-day sales figures in and actually they were 400 pounds ahead for the first
42:54time I think maybe we thought you know we could win it we sold we sold in those last few hours we
42:59really went for it people were leaving Harrods with products they didn't think they would have ever
43:04bought that we sold them and that's what it's all about the boardroom tomorrow is going to be a
43:10nice affair because there is no clear winner none of us know who it's going to be
43:149am the teams have an appointment in the boardroom they're about to find out who's won
43:40good morning
43:46good morning
44:10Good morning.
44:13Impact, from my report I heard that you were a bit disorganised in the beginning.
44:18Wasted quite a bit of time, running around like headless chickens.
44:21All because Paul had a problem counting, is that right?
44:26Yeah.
44:28Tim, you lot were very enthusiastic, hustling, bustling around,
44:33creating a lot of excitement. You look very, very busy.
44:37Alright, let's get down to the actual numbers. Margaret, tell me about Impact.
44:45Impact took £3,295.38.
44:51Nick? Well, close your business. First Forte sold £3,108.50.
45:03So, close call.
45:07We've done it again, Impact.
45:13Congratulations to our competitors, really well done.
45:16But I'm 100% proud of my team and what we achieved on that day.
45:19Impact, I've got a treat for you. I've got a helicopter organised for you.
45:25You're going to go up and you're going to have some great sights of our country.
45:28You're going to see some stately homes from the air. It's going to be a great day. Okay?
45:33Thank you. Thank you very much.
45:35You people, you're going to come back in here later.
45:38We're going to go through this thing in much greater detail.
45:41Regretfully, one of you is going to get fired. So, off you go. I'll call you lot later.
45:47That was so close to us.
45:48It was.
45:49Congratulations.
45:50I got it.
45:51It's been so close.
45:52It's been so close.
45:53It's been so close.
45:54It's been so close.
46:00It's been so close.
46:03It's been so close.
46:04It's been really bad.
46:05It's been really bad.
46:06It's been really bad.
46:07While James's team head off for their treat, Tim's have time to reflect on a narrow defeat.
46:14Gutted, absolutely gutted.
46:17And it's no disrespect to them, but they were just lucky.
46:20They were just lucky.
46:21Because we had better ideas, we were more creative.
46:23Like you say, Ben, much better organised.
46:25We got unlucky by not sending one man.
46:33I think for the lads on our team, well, it's only their second defeat.
46:36I hope they don't feel like us girls bring them bad luck.
46:39For myself and Adele, it's a pretty tough pill to swallow four times in a row,
46:43and I'm really not used to losing.
46:46I'm 100% proud of what we did, and I stand by that, whatever.
46:51Now that we know we're on the losing side,
46:53I've got another bridge to cross,
46:55which is obviously picking two people to accompany with
46:58into the boardroom for the firing.
47:04What I'll be listening for is people's professionalism.
47:06It's part of a job interview,
47:07and I think everybody should be conducting themselves
47:09in a professional manner.
47:10It wouldn't surprise me if I'm in the boardroom again,
47:13just for the sheer fact that the rest of the housemates know
47:17that I'm upset emotionally about people at home.
47:22I'm guessing it's going to be Adele,
47:26because she's not very good at coping under pressure,
47:29and she can become quite snappy.
47:31And I know she upset one or two of the Harrod staff.
47:36I personally don't think that Sean conducted himself professionally
47:39throughout the day.
47:40It seems like she's blaming everyone else for the lack of success.
47:47If you lose, you lose.
47:48You try and save face, you don't make yourself look a prat.
47:51I think Adele, to a certain extent, has done that.
47:54You know, she's blaming the Harrod staff and the other team,
47:56and that's not the right thing to do.
47:58I do feel for the other team a lot, because I've been on the losing team,
48:17and it's just not a nice feeling.
48:19And especially for this one, because it was so very, very close.
48:23The fact that they'll be on a down...
48:26To tell you the truth, they're always on a down.
48:28This is the fourth time they've been on a down.
48:50Back in the boardroom,
48:51the losers are about to face Sir Alan.
48:55He wants to know who is to blame.
49:02Oh, Frances, can you send them in, please?
49:04Of course.
49:06You can go through to the boardroom now.
49:08Thank you for this.
49:11Tim, why didn't you win?
49:22We didn't win because the other team had an exceptional salesman in the person of Syrah,
49:27who managed to sell a bag at the very last moment, which beat us by that £100.
49:32If they hadn't sold that bag, we would have won.
49:34And as the sales figures will show, we did an amazing, amazing job.
49:39But you didn't win.
49:40We didn't. No, we didn't.
49:41Why do you think the bag sold Miriam?
49:43I think luck definitely was an element in that sale.
49:46Don't you think it was a little bit more than luck that they sold their bag?
49:50I've never said it was wholeheartedly down to luck that they sold it.
49:53I've also credited Syrah in her sales technique in order to get there,
49:56and I respect her for doing that.
49:57You know, you say all the nice things and all the right things,
49:59you do realise, you know, you're in the firing line here.
50:03What about selling?
50:04Who was the worst at selling?
50:06Each of us have individual talents and different personalities,
50:09and that comes out in our selling technique.
50:11Everybody sold lots of items, and that's there in the figure.
50:15So I don't think there was any bad setters at all.
50:18Ben, you know, I was informed that on Friday
50:20that you did put in your share of input of getting the thing organised,
50:24but it didn't come across to me that you were actually using
50:27any kind of special salesmanship skills.
50:29What's your call on that, really?
50:30What I was trying to do was stand just outside of our area
50:34and drag people in and pull people in.
50:37And I believe, and I certainly hope my team believes,
50:40that I did that very successfully.
50:42See, that don't reconcile with you being found in the storeroom
50:47lunchtime, being exhausted, as if this was too much of a trauma for you.
50:51I wouldn't say traumatised, no. I would say that I took that 20 minutes.
50:54Exhausted?
50:55Yeah, you know, I think everyone was exhausted.
50:57It's a long day.
50:58Do you feel the pressure is building up on you to perform now,
51:01actually perform in areas which, as you keep saying to me,
51:04these are not really my forte?
51:06I think you probably agree, Sir Alan, that a lot of people
51:09work well under pressure.
51:10So I'm one of the types of people who, if pressured, I perform.
51:15Sebastian, you know, we've been here several weeks now.
51:18You know what doesn't come out about you to me,
51:20is that no one person has turned round to me and said,
51:23whoa, Sebastian really did...
51:25He was really...
51:27He'd done this, he'd done that.
51:29It seems to me you're a peripheral person.
51:32And, Sir Alan, as project manager of this, I have a better insight into how these two guys perform than yourself does.
51:38And I can assure you that Sebastian was not a layman in the team.
51:40Well, you know, Tim, you make sure you don't dig a hole for yourself, Tim, by being too nice, right?
51:45Because very shortly I'm going to ask you to pick two of your colleagues, you know.
51:49You won't be able to pussyfoot around that and come up with any nice cliches and things like that, you know.
51:54You're going to have to be decisive.
51:56As a team leader, you put yourself up front.
51:59Miriam, why did this team not win?
52:01Ultimately we lost because we didn't have a high enough volume of sales on Saturday.
52:08I mean, a future employee of mine, of which one of you may be,
52:12should be able to come to me and analyse what they think went wrong.
52:17Now, you might not consider anything went wrong.
52:19I do, because you're lost.
52:21Adele, what went wrong?
52:22We picked products that were varied in price from £2.25
52:27right up to obviously the big teddy bear at £1,100 and beyond that the piano at £10,000.
52:33So I think we concentrated perhaps too much on variety.
52:36The other team seemed to stick to one idea and that was the teddy bears.
52:40I think that that is what helped them to win.
52:43Don't you hear you say that he was actually, you know, having a slight altercation with one of the Harrod staff
52:48about you asking him his opinion on the signage?
52:51Before nine o'clock he was saying he can give us advice after nine.
52:54After nine he was saying I can't give you any advice, it's the attention to detail.
52:58My argument to him is why have you said before nine that you can and then you're saying you can't.
53:02Argument, argument is the word, argument is the word.
53:05Sir Alan, everybody had a problem with Sean. Sean was very rude, he had the wrong attitude.
53:12How does that reconcile with your looks on the day?
53:15I thought he was very professional and was doing as he was told to do and I'm surprised to hear you say that everybody had a problem with him.
53:25He was very arrogant and rude in his approach. You have to, I always say you've got to give respect to get respect, it's a reciprocal thing.
53:33But outside the little corner shop I made a specific point about these people are doing us a favour.
53:39Be under no illusion. They owe us nothing. We owe them.
53:43And this fellow who I spoke to myself in the end, and your name pops up all the time of confrontation.
53:49Well, Sir Alan, you know, if that's how he saw it I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
53:54I don't think it was only how he saw it, Adele. Let's move on.
53:57Ben, one of you is going today. Why did you lose? Tell me. Simple terms.
54:03Okay, simple terms. I think there's no place in business for high emotion.
54:08At one point, Adele did become very emotional throughout the day, certainly with the altercation that she had with some of the staff.
54:16And that emotion, I think, just kind of wiped her out a little bit for the rest of the day.
54:21The fact of the matter is, and I've said this for the last two weeks, I'm not in the right place here.
54:28And it will come as no surprise to you, Sir Alan, that I don't enjoy what I'm doing.
54:33I've never been so undermined and demeaned in all my life to do some of these things.
54:37What is demeaning about stopping an area of a shop and selling...?
54:41No, I haven't got a problem with that. I do that all the time. I am a retailer.
54:46I have got personal, emotional problems that's happening in my life.
54:52I'm sorry, this isn't for me. I am going to leave today.
54:55So, Sir Alan, I'd like to make your job a lot easier, and Tim would like to make your job a lot easier.
55:00I'm going to leave it at that.
55:02You know, it's an easy way out, Adele.
55:05No, it's not an easy way out, Sir Alan.
55:07It is, Adele. You know, look, Adele, I've been around a long time, right?
55:11You're a shrewd lady. Thank you for your little speech just now.
55:14But I want to tell you this, right?
55:16Despite what Tim might have come up with today, you was going to go.
55:20You read it right. Your reason you was going to go...
55:22Sir Alan...
55:23Because you took no notice of what I said to you outside the shop.
55:26I told you to be respectful to people. You have a problem being respectful to people.
55:31And I hope that you can contain that problem in the rest of your business life.
55:35I wish you well. I'm sorry about your problems that you may have with the family and emotions and all that stuff.
55:40It's a shame that it's gone this way. You lot are dead lucky. That's all I can say to you.
55:46Thank you, Pastor.
55:58It's not the note I wanted to finish on, personally.
56:02There was one person that I believed deserved to get fired, and she got fired.
56:08I mean, Sir Alan made it very obvious towards the end as to who he had in mind to go.
56:14And I just didn't expect her to resign.
56:18If anything, you know, one would say it's cowardice.
56:20And she's been on the losing side every time.
56:23I'm disappointed, really, because she's bright. She's dead bright.
56:26At this time, a bit too bright for her own good.
56:37They probably didn't know that I was going to be quite as spontaneous as I was.
56:42And given the circumstances, I was the easy target.
56:46I think that's been evident from the beginning that people have wanted to knock me out quite early on in the game.
56:52And a lot of people have said in the house that I am a lot of competition to them because I've got a very entrepreneurial background.
57:00And I think that that was a threat.
57:03As the task would have progressed, I probably would have become more strong in myself.
57:09I do believe I did have a good chance of succeeding and winning the competition.
57:13One job. Now, ten candidates. Sir Alan's search for his apprentice continues.
57:25Next week, Sir Alan sets a fresh challenge.
57:29Your task this week is all to do with art.
57:34This is going to be art with a capital F.
57:37Mwah! Mwah!
57:38I just felt a bit intimidated by them.
57:40They were divvied up beforehand.
57:42Each of you teams are going to choose one of Britain's up-and-coming artists.
57:47They've all got strong sexual aspects to them.
57:49I'm no artist, but it was just lots of shagging.
57:52You're going to take their work and you're going to display it.
57:54How close are you to find them?
57:56Not very close at the moment.
57:57Not very close?
57:58I've had a few more champagne.
57:59Would you like me to get you some more champagne?
58:01As the worlds of art and business collide, who'll be the next to go?
58:06A good salesman doesn't let a sale go away.
58:09It's like, well, fuck you, mate.
58:10I'm sorry to say, my friend, you're fired.
58:19So, now they've got rid of Adele, who's next?
58:21Find out next Wednesday at nine.
58:23Now, tonight for Spoof Comedy with Shirley Ghostman,
58:26switch over to BBC Three.
58:56And we'll see you air.
58:57Once we go up and see you in a different way of burning to the island,
58:58we'll see you in a different way of burning to the ground,
58:59as you famous may be bringing to the village.
59:01And, and ever consider you the big tea that we're talking about
59:02And in the whilst we got milkies.
59:03When you're lying to God or he ain't going to a green tea that you'll be
59:06a silver medal or mintier.
59:07And so that it may be the greatest good,
59:09please give it the truth to your soul.
59:11You have
