00:00Really the last couple innings were probably our best at-bats throughout the course of the game.
00:08We smoked some balls in the later innings.
00:10Now, you know, we had some opportunities early on and that ended up biting us that we couldn't push one across.
00:16We had bases loaded a couple times and what were we, one for, you know, yeah, we left 12 on base.
00:21But I thought our at-bats were good and a little unlucky in the last inning to hit two balls that hard.
00:30Ugh. Ugh. A little unlucky. I don't want to, I just, I don't know. I get it. You're not wrong.
00:40I don't want to hear it. I don't, I don't want to hear a little unlucky.
00:45You know what I do want to hear? I would love some opinions on whether or not the San Francisco Giants should be open to a pennant race, including Bryce Eldridge.
00:59Now, I don't want to assume everybody knows the story behind Bryce Eldridge.
01:04This is the number one prospect in the Giants system. He is only 20.
01:09He just a little baby. He's a little baby, but he hits the ball very, very far.
01:16And so, he was hurt to start the year. He just came up, and I'm doing this by feel,
01:22but Lucas Risotto, what, what was it, three, four weeks ago that he started playing?
01:29And at AA, flying squirrels, and he's been crushing it. He had a wonderful May.
01:35Also, quick clarification, I wouldn't say a little baby. He's a big baby.
01:39He's just a little baby.
01:41Big baby.
01:42Well, you know, there's boss baby, there's big baby, will baby, whatever. He a baby.
01:49He just, he, no, no drinky drink yet. No, no, not allowed.
01:536'7", 240.
01:54Right.
01:55He's not a little anything.
01:58Well, he could be a little help. I don't know.
02:03So, anyway, he had a wonderful May.
02:05I didn't look at the stats, but OPS was floating around above 900.
02:10862 on the year.
02:11And what about for May? Just May.
02:13I feel like it was like 950 going into his last few days of the month of May.
02:19So, he's really doing well. He's really doing well.
02:23And the Giants called him up to AAA today.
02:27So, here comes Bryce Eldridge.
02:30By the way, guess what position he plays?
02:33He plays first base.
02:35He plays first base.
02:36Do the Giants have a need at first base?
02:40They've got Leavetown Lamont at first.
02:44What'd you call him?
02:45Leavetown.
02:46And that's a little too dismissive.
02:48That's pretty mean.
02:49I'm sure he's listening on his way to the ballpark.
02:51Oh, for sure. Big sports radio guy.
02:53He should probably already be there.
02:54So, you know, the game coming up in three hours and 40.
02:56I would think. I don't know when the guys arrive.
02:59Yeah, I don't either.
02:59But I'm open to his inclusion.
03:03But I also like the idea of just making a trade.
03:06Make a trade soon for Ryan O'Hearn, who is just checking the notes.
03:11His OPS is 952.
03:13You're talking about the Orioles' first baseman.
03:15Who, by the way, is not expiring.
03:16He's under team control again next year.
03:18I thought that it was just an $8 million deal and that he was going to be up.
03:22That was my understanding.
03:23Ryan O'Hearn has a club option for 2025.
03:27So, yes, he'll be up.
03:28But at that price, which would be an $8 million club option next year,
03:33you'd probably want to keep him.
03:34He's a very, very good hitter.
03:36He's playing really well this year.
03:39And, look, you have a DH.
03:40It's not the end.
03:41I mean, fine.
03:42Yeah, you can have more good hitters.
03:43You always find a place for it.
03:45But I do think they're hesitant on the Bryce Eldridge blocking idea.
03:50I have your Eldridge May stats.
03:52Month of May stats.
03:53What do you got?
03:53Slash line, 307 average, on base, 360, slugging 554.
03:58That's a 915 OPS.
04:01In 27 games, he's hit six home runs.
04:04Pretty good.
04:05Very, very good.
04:07And that's not a great hitter's league.
04:09Yeah, exactly.
04:09The double A.
04:10So, you go to Sacramento, and the weather gets warmer,
04:13and you spend however long there,
04:15and you think maybe around the deadline or even before that,
04:19you get them up here because you're going to need the help.
04:21I just think about Baltimore being a team that is leaning toward,
04:25probably leaning toward selling.
04:27They're in a free fall.
04:30And they just fired their manager, if I'm not mistaken.
04:34The Orioles?
04:34I thought they did.
04:35Maybe I got that wrong.
04:37I don't think so.
04:37Ryan O'Hara is a guy who could come in and not block him long-term.
04:44And, sure, you'd love to pick up his club option at $8 million,
04:46and, yeah, you'd have another left-handed bat,
04:48and he could be a DH and the rest of it.
04:50And I also remember you saying that Bryce was still kind of developing his ability
04:55at first base.
04:56That is correct.
04:57That is absolutely correct.
04:58And for a pitching and defense team like this,
05:00you probably don't want to just, you know,
05:03all right, kid, learn to hit in the bigs and go play first for us.
05:06You could also have him DH and let Wilmer play first base sometimes.
05:10Wilmer plays first base.
05:11Yep, he can.
05:12You know, Casey Schmidt plays first, and so you've got some options.
05:15Casey Schmidt plays first, and there's options.
05:15Yeah.
05:16So, look, I don't know.
05:17I would only answer it this way,
05:20and I'll try to do some digging within the organization.
05:24You know, maybe we can even get Kyle Haynes
05:28or somebody from the organization on to talk about kind of where Bryce is.
05:34I don't want them rushing Bryce because they're struggling.
05:39That's how I'd answer it.
05:41If everything aligns, great.
05:44I have no problem with somebody needing to get a fake ID to be in the bigs.
05:50I'm fine with it.
05:51I'm fine with it.
05:52We've watched others do it.
05:53If you want to start his clock because you truly think he's ready,
05:57then bring him on up.
05:59But I do not want the Giants saying, oh, oh, oh, God, we can't hit.
06:05Let's go put pressure on Bryce Eldridge.
06:08Do you know what I mean?
06:09Like, if he were to come up, I'd love to see him hit seventh.
06:12I do not want them grabbing him and going, you're our future.
06:18Here's the third spot in the lineup.
06:20Go get him, kid.
06:21Never seen a big league pitch.
06:23Keep in mind, they rocked with him in spring training.
06:27He struck out a ton.
06:29A ton.
06:30So, like, that'd be my thing.
06:33It's not normal for people to be like Buster Posey where they just come up
06:38and they're like, cool, you're rookie of the year right away.
06:40Like, that's great.
06:42So, I don't know.
06:44I don't know.
06:45I'm a little hesitant on it, but I can tell you this.
06:47I will also say the news of the day that he's getting called up to Sacramento
06:52after just barely over a month in AA suggests to me that the Giants are very much open
06:58to having him be on the big league team this year.
07:01Yeah, I mean, it's a question.
07:03And the Orioles did fire their manager, Brandon Hyde, native of Santa Rosa, about three weeks ago.
07:09Oh, they did?
07:10Yeah, so I wouldn't have any idea who the Orioles manager is.
07:15It was Brandon Hyde, and it's not anymore.
07:18So, I look at Baltimore as a team that was good last year, a playoff team,
07:23and then this year they have really fallen off the face, and they're firing their manager.
07:27Their GM is somebody who is really struggling, and they might be a team who would be interested in, like,
07:33a Carson Wisenhunt, for example, or whatever the pitching prospect was.
07:39You've got pitching coming out your ears as a Giants organization, and I think you need a real hitter,
07:46and O'Hearn is a real hitter.
07:48He's a left-handed bat, which you don't have a ton of on this team.
07:52So, I look at a Giants squad that can't hit, and you're right about Bryce Eldridge.
07:57You don't want to put any pressure on him.
07:59And if he's ready on July 12th or August 5th, yeah, come on up and be a part of this,
08:06but you don't want to call him up and have to, quote, rely on him.
08:11You're absolutely right.
08:12I don't want a lot of pressure on him, but I wonder how Giants fans are feeling about this.
08:17Bryce Eldridge has been called up to AAA, so he is one step away in a number of facets here.
08:25Obviously, geographically, he is one step away.
08:28There's nowhere else to go.
08:29They're calling him up for a reason.
08:31It's an organization that believes in rewarding players who force their way up to the next level.
08:37And there was a lot of talk about Bryce before the season even started, and then he got hurt,
08:41and so he kind of missed at least the first month and a half of everything going on.
08:46And then he joined AA, and he mashed.
08:49He just walked right in there and mashed.
08:51He is not 21 yet.
08:53So, he's already been called up to Sacramento.
08:55He is the number one prospect.
08:57He plays a position that the Giants sorely need.
09:00And when people wondered, for example, and I heard a caller do this earlier today on 95.7,
09:06when people go, why didn't they do Pete Alonzo?
09:08That's why.
09:09This is why.
09:10This is why they did not sign a first baseman.
09:14This is why Lamont Wade still has this leash, because they're just kick the can down the road,
09:21kick the can down the road.
09:22Let's put Casey Schmidt over there.
09:24He can hang out for a few weeks, buying time until this position, they hope, belongs to Bryce Eldridge for a decade.
09:32That's what they hope.
09:33Right.
09:34And, you know, if he does in Sacramento what he's been doing in Richmond, then he'll be called up before, probably before the middle of August and maybe even before that, you know.
09:44And last year in Sacramento, really small sample, wasn't great.
09:49He only had 31 at bat, so you can't judge it off of an eight game stint.
09:54But now he go to Sacramento and he'll be in Sugar Land, Texas.
09:58They got a six game series starting today.
10:01Just outside of Houston, hot with rain in the forecast, which is my favorite combo.
10:06So, yeah, I'd imagine maybe not today, but tomorrow he'll get some triple A at bats and get a chance to really show what he can do.
10:14Yeah.
10:14Yeah.
10:14But, yeah, God, I wonder.
10:19I wonder how they're going to play this because, again, the guy running the Giants is obviously now somebody who knows a thing or two about being a hot prospect and being called up.
10:30And everybody I've heard from over there kind of suggests, yeah, Buster's going to want to slow play that thing.
10:36But I don't know if they've got that luxury.
10:38I don't know if they have that luxury if he's going to keep hitting the ball like this.
10:42Because the other thing that I know the Giants are like, they are feeling this.
10:47They're feeling this.
10:47You cannot have this kind of extended lack of production from so many spots on the diamond in first base is clearly one of them.
10:56All right.
10:57888-957-9570.
10:59Let's get Matt in Oakland in here.
11:00Hey, Matt.
11:01Thanks for calling.
11:02What's up?
11:03Hey, guys.
11:04How you doing?
11:05Good, man.
11:05Thanks for calling.
11:07Full disclosure here.
11:08I'm an ex-A's fan, so expect a little bitterness.
11:13I hate to burst your bubble, but this is a six- to eight-team league, and the Giants aren't one of them.
11:19And unless they're going to start spending $150 million more, they simply don't have a chance against a Dodger team whose salary is, what, twice theirs?
11:28And probably more than that if you count the Ohtani salary, which is roughly equivalent to the entire payroll of the A's.
11:36I don't know what to say.
11:39I wish that weren't true.
11:41I wish, you know, two of the teams didn't play in minor league parks and that more than 2,000 people showed up for a lot of games.
11:48I don't know what to do unless they're willing to spend another, yeah, $100 to $150 million a year.
11:56They just cannot compete with the Dodgers or the Mets.
12:01And that sounds kind of futile.
12:05I'd be interested to know what you guys think about that, and I'd be happy to take my answer off the air.
12:11And thank you very much for taking it.
12:14Matt, Matt, thank you.
12:15Appreciate it.
12:16I'll tell you what.
12:18We'll go to a little bit more of an extended answer about that coming up next because the Giants payroll is currently its number, I think it's like number 11 in baseball.
12:31But, yeah, it is about $150, $160 million behind the Dodgers and behind the Mets.
12:37I don't know about you.
12:39Oddly right now, in this moment, I'm not judging the Giants based on how they compete with the Dodgers.
12:46That's not how I'm judging the Giants right now.
12:48Not right now.
12:49No, in October, I'll worry about that.
12:52Right now, I'm judging them based on who they are right now.
12:56And right now, over the past 15 games, they have not been good enough offensively.
13:00Let's get into that a little bit more coming up next.
13:02888-957-9570.
13:05Bryce Eldridge has been called up to Sacramento.
13:09How long do you want the Giants to take a look at him there before he's on the big club, assuming he's producing?
13:17Are you comfortable with a 20-year-old putting a cape on and coming to third and king?
13:22We'll take your calls.
13:24888-957-9570.
13:25Stay well in the games.

13:42I'm looking for a length of the game.
13:44Yeah.
13:44Yeah.
13:45So let's see.
13:46I've got a couple of yes.
13:47I'm komt to see you guys here.
