00:00Schmidt bobbles!
00:02He'll go to first, not in time.
00:06Could have been a double play to end the game.
00:08The Giants don't get anybody out.
00:10And now it's a one-run game.
00:12Two and two.
00:14Goodman strikes out swinging.
00:16On the high fastball.
00:18Two down.
00:20Huge.
00:223-2 pitch with the bases loaded.
00:24Arcia into left field.
00:26Estrada in.
00:28Estrada in.
00:30McMahon is going to score.
00:32And the Rockies break the Giants' hearts in the ninth inning.
00:36And salvage a game in the series with an 8-7 victory.
00:42Now, back to Willard and Dibbs on 95.7 The Game.
00:46You ever have a great day and then get in a fight with a family member right before bed?
00:50You asking me?
00:52Yeah, you ever had that happen?
00:54Yeah, it's happened.
00:55What day is it?
00:56Yesterday is on the phone.
00:58But go ahead.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Well, I don't want to pry.
01:02It's too late.
01:03It's too late.
01:04It's my fault.
01:05My fault.
01:06No, no, no.
01:07A lot of GP2 coming from me around the house.
01:08Well, I mean, that's called being a dude.
01:12Yeah.
01:13It's called being a guy.
01:15At least if you're doing it right.
01:17You're doing it right.
01:18Yeah.
01:19That's my version of chivalry.
01:21My fault.
01:22My fault.
01:23I was watching some stand-up comedy the other day.
01:26You just made me think of this.
01:28And the guy's bit.
01:29It's pretty funny.
01:30He said his dad told him the secret to marriage is to never say the first or the second thing that comes to your mind.
01:41Just wait, breathe, and say the third thing that comes to mind.
01:48Gotcha.
01:49So he tells this story of driving out to Vegas with his wife and they fill the cooler with a bunch of drinks.
02:00And then they're almost there and she pulls out the drinks and they're warm.
02:04And she's like, oh my God, this cooler did not keep the drinks cold.
02:11And he looks in the cooler and he's like, babe, you didn't put any ice in it.
02:16And she goes, you don't need to put ice in a cooler.
02:20It's a cooler.
02:21So the first thing that comes to his mind, he goes, the first thing that comes to my mind is that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard somebody say in my entire life.
02:37OK, that's a pass on that one.
02:40The second thing that comes to his mind is, honey, how exactly do you think a cooler works?
02:49OK.
02:50Pass.
02:51We're going to pass on that one.
02:52Third thing that comes to his mind, honey, I can't believe this cooler.
02:58It's broken.
03:00It's broken.
03:01That's funny.
03:03That's how you keep your marriage intact.
03:05I'm going to have to remember that one.
03:07Oh, God.
03:08A little late now, but yeah.
03:09The third thing.
03:10Anyway, there's a reason I just brought this up.
03:12You ever have a great day and then right before bed you get into a fight with someone you love?
03:17Because that's what the Giants just did.
03:19That's what the Giants just did in Colorado.
03:22They just had a great week in Colorado.
03:26Everybody's hitting and we're all coming from behind and we're just having a sexy seven game win streak and everything's wonderful.
03:35And I swear to you, Dibs, we're having that conversation.
03:38The game's on over our shoulder.
03:40It's seven to five.
03:42They go to the ninth inning.
03:43They bring in Randy Rodriguez this time in order to close the game out.
03:47Duvall not available today.
03:48He had pitched both of the other two games, including a lengthy effort last night in a game that, by the way, like this is not cherry picking.
03:58When he brought Duvall in up by four, not up by three, up by four, I went, did you need to do that?
04:05Eh.
04:06I know it's Coors Field.
04:07Right.
04:08And no lead is safe.
04:10But I was like, with a day game tomorrow, I might have held on to Duvall.
04:14See if somebody else can go get those three outs.
04:16Instead, Duvall struggles.
04:18Yeah.
04:19But gets out of it.
04:20Giants win 10 to seven.
04:21So today you've got to go to Randy Rodriguez.
04:23Well, no shame there.
04:24Randy is right.
04:25He's been absolutely unbelievable.
04:28Well, Giants are up seven to five.
04:31There's one out and he issues a walk.
04:33And for some reason, all of the Coors Field feels from history just went running through my body.
04:42And I went, this is the game they're going to lose, isn't it?
04:47This is the one because they do this every year at Coors Field, no matter how bad the Rockies are.
04:53There's one of these every year, and it often seems like it's on the getaway day.
04:59Because that's the one that leaves that crappy taste in your mouth, even after things have gone so well.
05:06You took two from San Diego, you swept Atlanta, and you were moments away from a sweep in Colorado, and you've won seven of your last eight games.
05:14Yet, I'm kind of annoyed right now.
05:16Yeah, no doubt.
05:17I'm kind of annoyed because, first of all, that's the Rockies and they're awful.
05:22And second of all, and this is not fair to Casey, but if Matt Chapman's not hurt, the Giants just swept that series.
05:29Because the bases were loaded, and it was seven to five with one out, and a nice little hot shot, candy hop to third base.
05:37Right to him.
05:38Taylor made 5-4-3 game-ending double play, and Casey completely boots it.
05:45One-two.
05:46Doyle on the ground to third.
05:48Schmidt bobbles!
05:49He'll go to first, not in time.
05:54Could have been a double play to end the game.
05:56The Giants don't get anybody out.
05:58And now it's a one-run game.
06:00That's Dave Fleming, of course, NBC Sports Bay Area.
06:03Rodriguez would strike out the next hitter, but then with two outs and the bases loaded in a 3-2 count.
06:08Arcia with a line drive base hit to left field.
06:11Ball game over.
06:13Rockies win 8-7.
06:16And, look, the defense was kind of weak throughout this entire series.
06:20I'm thinking of Encarnacion yesterday.
06:22Oh, boy.
06:23But also, it's odd.
06:25Dibs, this series looked like a Coors Field series, and it shouldn't.
06:29Not this year.
06:30The Rockies have fewer runs scored than any team in baseball.
06:33And they just put up 20 in the three games against the Giants.
06:3716 earned, so the four unearned.
06:40Two of them from the Encarnacion whiff yesterday, where he just chose not to catch the ball at first base.
06:46He stepped the wrong way, and the ball just went whizzing right through him.
06:49And then this one, Schmidt's a natural third baseman, and he gets a pretty generous hop.
06:54But what I saw, looking at the replay, is as the ball's coming to him, he's already turning his head to throw to second.
07:01It's like the wide receiver who, you know, takes his eyes off the ball that last second trying to figure out where he's going to run with the ball, and you just don't catch it.
07:10And this one is the crusher because, you know, your relievers in the series were all a little shaky.
07:15And Rodriguez letting guys on, and last night, Duval, same thing, and a little shaky, no doubt.
07:22And so you still had a chance to escape with the victory, and today marks a first for the Giants this season.
07:30It's the first time all year that they've scored four runs in an inning and lost the ball game.
07:36This is the 15th time, Mark, that they've scored four or more runs in a game.
07:42And this is the first time that that happened, and they actually lost the ball game.
07:45Yeah, they scored four in the second, three more in the fifth, and they lose 8-7.
07:49Dom Smith had a three-run homer.
07:51This one was threatening to be relaxing.
07:53The Giants were up by five.
07:56That bullpen just gave up a five-run lead.
08:00That has to be the first time that that's happened this year.
08:03Yeah, absolutely.
08:05I can't remember another one of those.
08:07Have they coughed up and lost any other five-run lead so far this year?
08:11I don't believe so.
08:12I'm remembering some of the blown games, right?
08:14Blown saves.
08:15There was the one in Anaheim.
08:16There's some other frustrating games, but I don't remember a time where the Giants gave
08:20up a five-run lead and lost.
08:23I can't think of that.
08:24Well, there haven't been that many games where they've scored five runs.
08:27So, I mean, that limits you down to how many games you have to actually mentally go through.
08:33And that's been the strength of this team is starting pitching in the bullpen, and you
08:37got to this series.
08:38Yeah, you gave up 20 runs.
08:40Even if it's only 16 earned, that is five and a third a game for a team, the Rockies,
08:46that's barely averaging three and a half runs a game.
08:48So you were a strike away, by the way, from getting on the plane to L.A., dead heat, even
08:53Steven with the Dodgers.
08:55Yeah.
08:56And now you're a game back and whatever.
08:57Like, that's not the big story.
08:59That's not the end of the world.
09:01But man, I would have really loved to watch the Giants for no other reason than just seemingly
09:08the Bay Area's favorite sports word this year, which is vibes.
09:12I don't know if you've noticed this.
09:14We did this with the Warriors.
09:15I can hear everybody doing it with the Niners right now.
09:18It's all about vibes.
09:19And the Giants would have headed to L.A. with some serious vibes.
09:24A strike away from an eight-game win streak and an even Steven 41-28 record as they arrive
09:33in L.A. to take on the Dodgers tomorrow night.
09:35But no.
09:36They cough it up.
09:37They're a game back.
09:38And now they're licking wounds on their plane flight.
09:41And it's that part of it, the way you lost it.
09:44Because when Chapman gets hurt, your number one fear is the gold glove defense and the
09:50bat, too.
09:51But the offense was actually really good in this series at altitude, of course.
09:55But your fears have been the defense.
09:58And so you don't have your starting catcher.
10:00You don't have your starting third baseman.
10:02Your first baseman didn't really catch the ball.
10:05Elliott Ramos already is a slightly below average defensive player.
10:10And even in this game, what is it, the ninth inning, Jung-Hoo Lee makes a terrific catch
10:15going back, back, back, back, back.
10:16The first out.
10:17The first out was up against the fence in center field.
10:19So, I mean, it looked like defensively you were doing enough to preserve that lead.
10:24And then Schmidt can't get it done at third.
10:26And, you know, he feels awful right now because that play has got to be...
10:30It's converted probably 97% of the time.
10:33I mean, the ball's hit literally right to him and not that hot of a shot.
10:37No.
10:38It was...
10:39And a candy hop.
10:40He got to bounce off the grass.
10:41This thing hit him in the waist.
10:43Right in the waist.
10:44He didn't even need to bend over for this thing.
10:47Like, ah.
10:48Ah.
10:49That one stinks.
10:53And they're coming off of a seven-game win streak.
10:56And sure, I should know better because if you go through the seven games that they just won,
11:02they probably didn't deserve at least three of them.
11:05Yep.
11:06That's the way they've been winning ball games.
11:08Walk off wild pitches.
11:10Walk off home runs.
11:12They rallied from way down late in the game last night to end up winning like all of these games are super close.
11:20And so, yeah.
11:21Like, the last three times the Giants have lost, you come out of there going, you've got to be kidding me.
11:27How the hell did you lose that baseball game?
11:30But sandwiched around those three losses were seven wins.
11:33Six of them by one run.
11:35So, everything's fine, but that one's hard to swallow.
11:40Very hard.
11:41That one's hard to swallow.
11:42Especially when you realize that they've only lost two games this year before today when they scored five or more runs.
11:48So, just looking at these games, it's impossible that they would have blown a five-run lead before
11:54because they only had two losses when they scored five or more.
11:58So, today, that becomes another first on your list where, I mean, you put up the numbers offensively and you still couldn't get it done because you blew a five-run lead.
12:07Okay.
12:09In about 28 hours, 27 and a half hours, Logan Webb and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
12:18Wow.
12:19Let's take a look.
12:20Let's see it, boys.
12:22Like, I really, you know, measuring stick stuff in baseball is kind of tough because it's baseball, but I really, I'm excited to get a look at this.
12:32And it stinks that that's the last taste in their mouth before they go into this series, but let's see.
12:39Let's see it because I know, I know most of you and most of the people around the country who watch baseball, you still don't buy it.
12:48You still don't think that they've actually got a shot at this or that they belong in the conversation with the Padres and the Dodgers.
12:58They, like, a lot of people do not believe that this is going to last.
13:03I don't know.
13:04As we sit here now, right, a week and a half ago, first two losses against the Padres, everybody was super annoyed and ready to really ring the necks of the offensive side of this team.
13:15And then they became one of the big stories in baseball with their seven-game win streak.
13:19You know, put today aside, I guess, but off you go to L.A., and the question is, is to what level do we believe that this is actually a thing?
13:29That the Giants are going to sustain in the standings and challenge for a playoff spot and maybe even the damn division?
13:37Yeah, this is a definite measuring stick series, and you're right.
13:41Three games out of 162, we can't put too much import into it because, you know, you can come back and sweep them next time if they sweep you here.
13:49You do go in with a little sting, though, having lost today, because if you'd only take one of the three in L.A., now it's a three-and-three road trip, and that includes Colorado.
13:59And Colorado's got 13 wins, and they've beaten you twice.
14:03Yeah.
14:04And you're not going to beat them every single time, of course.
14:06Yeah, they've played them seven times.
14:08Right, and you're five and two, which if they're two and five, their winning percentage against you is way higher than it is against everyone else in baseball.
14:17Yeah.
14:18I mean, there's different ways to look at it.
14:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:20I think about tomorrow, and it's one of those games that is super exciting.
14:24Looking at the fan graphs, Cy Young tracker, Logan Webb is number two, and Yamamoto is number five.
14:31Okay.
14:32So these are two of the five best starters in the National League going head-to-head.
14:36Number one right now.
14:37Paul Skeens.
14:38Paul Skeens.
14:39Yep.
14:40Okay.
14:41And then Chris Sale is three, Zach Wheeler is four, Robbie Ray is eight.
14:44Robbie Ray is eight.
14:45Kodai Senga is nine.
14:46Okay.
14:47So...
14:48Okay.
14:49You know, you've got some big names on there, and...
14:50No doubt.
14:51And the Giants have two of them, so...
14:52And Robbie Ray won't pitch in the series, but...
14:54All right, Logan, it's ace versus ace down there in front of probably 50,000 plus at Chavez Ravine.
15:00And then the Giants are going to send two babies out over the weekend in Landon Roop and Kyle Harrison.
15:05Um, at least I think they're sending out Kyle Harrison.
15:07I don't think they're going to use that as Justin Verlander's return game.
15:10Um, but, uh, yeah, you're probably actually going to run, uh, the six man rotation over the next seven days would be my guess.
15:18And, uh, Harrison will start Sunday.
15:20Verlander will probably get a spot next week, maybe against Cleveland.
15:23And then you figure out what you're going to do.
15:25Um, but, uh, we'll take your Giants calls and, uh, some more to, uh, to kind of bounce around on this.
15:30888-957-957.
15:31Let's go to Chris in Sonoma.
15:33Hi, Chris.
15:34What are you doing, man?
15:35Thanks for calling.
15:36Hey, good afternoon, guys.
15:38Uh, just running some errands and, um, listen to the end of the game.
15:42I like listening to these games more than watching.
15:45But anyway, uh, first off, I really like Bob Melvin.
15:50I think he's a terrific manager.
15:52Uh, the however is last night's poor decision-making at the end of the game using Duval in a non-save situation.
16:01I think led, it's a ripple effect.
16:05It led to using Rodriguez today, who's been terrific.
16:08Don't get me wrong, but he allowed Rodriguez to throw 43 pitches, melt down, lose a game.
16:16Uh, he would have had Duval had he not used Duval last night, number one.
16:20Number two, by allowing Rodriguez to throw 43 pitches, he might not have Rodriguez against a team he really, who can really hit.
16:29Chris, there's no, there's no might about it.
16:32He will not be available tomorrow night.
16:34I can tell you that already right now.
16:36I don't think he'll be available all weekend, Sunday at the earliest, fellas.
16:40No, I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't say that.
16:42Yeah, I wouldn't say that.
16:43You're not wrong, Chris, but I, I wouldn't rule Saturday out yet, but we can, we can firmly rule out tomorrow.
16:49You're right about that.
16:50Yeah, so, uh, you know, this is a, Dan makes a great, makes a great point.
16:57Boy, they're two and five against the Giants.
16:59That's a 400 percentage.
17:00Come on, man.
17:01What are we doing?
17:02Well, it's actually 28%.
17:04Yeah.
17:05Two out of seven.
17:06Two out of five would have been, I got where you're, no, I, I see where Chris's brain went.
17:09I love this.
17:11Even at that, like if you're two and five, that's two out of seven.
17:16One out of seven is 14.3.
17:18So they're playing 286 balls.
17:2028.6%.
17:21That's correct.
17:22The Giants, which, and you'd have to extrapolate that out of their overall record, but.
17:26Well, they're, they're 191 overall.
17:28Yeah.
17:29So if you take the two and five against the Giants out of that 191, it goes down to about
17:33180.
17:34Then they're 11 and 50.
17:35Right.
17:36Which is 11 out of 61, which is not very good, Mark.
17:39No, it's not good.
17:40No.
17:41Bob or Dan, whatever your name is.
17:42It's a Dan day, apparently.
17:43Apparently.
17:44Yeah.
17:45And it's okay to lose to the worst team in the history of baseball, but to do it like
17:50this.
17:51And I, I think he makes a good point about the usage yesterday of Doval.
17:54And now you don't have Rodriguez tomorrow for sure.
17:57And you'll have Doval.
17:58You figure.
17:59And here's my guess.
18:00This is just my guess.
18:02Um, if you asked Bo Mel and, and I, cause I thought the same thing.
18:07If you were watching last night when the Giants went ahead, both Doval and Sean jelly were
18:13loose and he went to Doval and I I'd have to ask this question to be sure, but I've heard
18:19it before.
18:20A lot of times, once a closer gets loose in the bullpen, that already counts as an outing.
18:27So the thought process is look, we've already used him.
18:32He's loose and he's ready to go in the bullpen.
18:34Remember the Giants were scoring runs in that top of the ninth.
18:39So they didn't know that it wasn't a safe situation.
18:42I think they went into that final, uh, inning up seven to six.
18:47So they're thinking safe situation.
18:49Camillo is getting ready.
18:51And then they start rallying and they turn a seven, six game into a 10, six game.
18:55Now you can hand it over to jelly, but that may already go down as a day of usage for Doval.
19:01Therefore, he's already not available for the day game, the next day, which was today.
19:06And so then you're thinking, well, if we're going to use them, let's use them.
19:10Yeah.
19:11Plus it's Coors field and a four run lead here is like a two run lead anywhere else.
19:15So let's go and put them out there.
19:16My guess is that's the thought process, but I had the same question.
19:20As soon as they went up by four, I'm kind of like for two reasons.
19:23You're like, Hey, maybe you rest them a little bit.
19:26And B we know this when closers, when it's not a safe situation for whatever reason,
19:31it feels like they don't focus the same way.
19:34And didn't Doval go through that last year where like a couple of times, absolutely.
19:38He came in games where they just wanted to give him work and he was not highly motivated
19:43and he struggled and it became a thing.
19:45Yeah.
19:46And he gave up a bomb right away.
19:47Last night, it was 10 to seven.
19:48And then there were ducks on the pond and tying run at the plate and all the stuff's going
19:52on.
19:53So, uh, but that'd be my guess.
19:55If you asked Bo Mel why he did it, he's like, dude, we're already using him.
19:59So we might as well go ahead and get him to close out this game.
20:02And he did.
20:03He did.
20:04So he did.
20:05Yeah.
20:06So you got to give him credit.
20:07It was a W, but yes, there's a ripple effect.
20:09And, and, uh, Chris is not wrong.
20:11Randy Rodriguez, my understanding of the way that Randy is used, you can, you can book
20:17it.
20:18He is not available tomorrow night.
20:19Now for game one of the Los Angeles Dodgers series.
20:22And what's the Ryan Walker situation right now?
20:24He's fine.
20:25He threw today, but, but just one inning and, and Duvall should be, he's on the table for
20:31tomorrow.
20:32I just didn't know about like Walker closing today.
20:34Is Rodriguez now ahead of Walker on the closer pecking order?
20:38That's an interesting question.
20:39It's probably kind of just circumstantial would be my, uh, I guess in terms of how they,
20:44they go about figuring that out.
20:46But you know, Randy has been the better pitcher than Walker.
20:49So close game.
20:50You're probably thinking that then again.
20:52Yeah.
20:53Walker Walker through the eighth.
20:54So I, you know, what, what kicks them to, I mean, honestly, my thought might've been,
21:01all right, it's a seven to five game.
21:04Let's use Walker.
21:05And then maybe the giants will score in the top of the ninth and we won't need Rodriguez
21:10at all.
21:11And we can protect him for the Dodgers series, but then they don't score and they needed him.
21:14And yeah, now everybody's gas.
21:16That's right.
21:17Have fun in LA.
21:18Last time Doval didn't close a game.
21:21It was Rodriguez.
21:22So Rodriguez does seem to be over Walker closer to this was his second opportunity to get
21:28a safe.
21:29He closed the first one.
21:30That was the, the, the third game against the Padres right after those two rough losses.
21:33Makes sense.
21:34Don't you think?
21:35He's been better.
21:36He's been way better than Walker.
21:37Yes.
21:38And no, but his experience as a closer is much, much more limited.
21:41Walker has been in that role more.
21:43And I think this game might be something that could flip the pecking order.
21:48Rodriguez found his way into some trouble.
21:50He gave up a huge out to start the inning and then some shakiness and the air obviously
21:56hurt, but for sure, ultimately he was unable to lock it down.
21:59No doubt.
22:00No doubt.
22:01Yep.
22:02The scoreboard is what it is.
22:03And the Giants lose this one frustrating in Colorado by a final of eight to seven.
