00:00I'm here to get my 100%. I don't put any buts. They're the men in charge. I am here to play
00:07wherever they want me to play. Yeah, we talked to him a little bit today, and like he said,
00:11he goes, I'll play wherever you want me to play. I'll hit wherever you want me to hit. So that's
00:15how it started. He's going to DH today. He's going to hit in the three spot. We're going to work him
00:20in and get him some ground balls at first and make sure he's comfortable before we put him over
00:25there, and that's pretty much the way we look at it right now, a little bit of DH and a little bit
00:29at first. Now, back to Willard and Dibbs on 95-7, the game. Yeah, he's going to be your first
00:36baseman, but not yet. But he's not playing third either, and as I sort of stated earlier,
00:43if he's not going to play third tonight, he's not going to play third. Probably not. Like,
00:47that'd be an emergency. Well, and Bob said, you know, we're going to get him some ground
00:52balls over at first, and we're going to, you know, work him and wait until he's ready,
00:55and then we're going to pop him in there, which means you're not going to hit him balls
01:00for him to play first and then play him at third, especially when he's not the best third
01:05baseman defensively, and you're built on pitching and defense. Casey Schmidt, good enough to play
01:09tonight. Better third baseman defensively than Devers. So, yeah, that's what you're going
01:14to do, and I don't know beyond that. Would it be Fitz? Would he go over and play third
01:19before Chappie came back? Christian Koss is up right now because of injuries, and he is who
01:25went and played third base in L.A. the other night when Schmidt fouled the ball off of his
01:29foot. So, that's an option. And then, yeah, you do have emergency people to put over there,
01:35which would be Devers, could even be Flores. But again, it seems to me the Giants are drawing
01:40a line in the sand, which is Wilmer Flores is not playing in the field this year.
01:44That seems to be the way. I'm just looking at what he's done this year, and he has played
01:5028 innings at first base, Wilmer Flores. And he's played in 70 of the 72, and he's DH'd in
01:5763 of them. And he pinched in a few times, but when he's in the lineup, he's your DH. And I do think
02:03that what they discovered this year is when he's fresher, he's awesome.
02:08Yeah, you may see, like, and again, if he's been there a bit, and, you know, Grandy brought
02:16this up, maybe until Chapman gets back, you're looking at a first base platoon between Dominic
02:23Smith and Wilmer Flores. If they are going to put him in there at all, maybe they won't.
02:28I don't know. But until they feel Devers is ready. But when Devers is ready, I really do
02:32believe that's what this is going to be. I think he's going to be your first baseman.
02:35What do you think, I'm sorry, Grandy, I just was going to ask, and you can certainly answer,
02:39what's the time frame for a guy to get ready to play first when he's never played first
02:44in the bigs? Like, what feels to you like that might be the time?
02:49Oh, I mean, obviously.
02:52Yeah, like, obviously, it's just based on when he feels ready. But I loved Melvin's answer,
02:58which was that if you can play third in the bigs, you can play first in the bigs. So I think
03:03it's just a matter of him getting out of whatever this argument was about it in Boston. Wrap your
03:09head around it. Go start taking balls over there. When does he feel ready? Yeah, like a couple
03:14weeks? Maybe? A couple weeks?
03:16Yeah, I don't know. Something like that.
03:17And maybe also, I would bet, if I were Bommel, I'd be thinking in the back of my mind, be ready
03:24to play first once Chapman is back and ready to play third. Because that has all kinds of
03:30lineup ripples and effects and everything like that. And that's when you can really unveil
03:35your new lineup and put Wilmer back in as the DH and have Devers and Chapman in the lineup
03:39as well.
03:40I was just going to say, you guys are talking about who's even available and who can play
03:43third and first and all that. You can't add Devers to this team without sending somebody
03:48out. And there has been an official roster move. Daniel Johnson, the outfielder, pride
03:54of Vallejo, he's been optioned to AAA.
03:57And he just whacked a home run the other night.
04:00A home run in L.A.
04:00He's lasted bad as a giant.
04:02What's the home run?
04:04Well, he might be back.
04:05Yeah, I know he's just getting sent down.
04:06Yeah, and you get down there, though, and there is some competition on next guy to get called
04:11up.
04:12Outfielders, yeah.
04:14Yeah, I mean, sure.
04:15There's always, you know, I think that's kind of, he was a circumstantial call up to
04:20begin with, with both injuries and guys that they were moving off of.
04:26So, yeah, they're not deep out there in outfield, but there are other guys who can go out there
04:30in a pinch.
04:31But, yeah, for the moment, this is kind of like, I guess, could you call it good news
04:37for Mike Yastrzemski, who's worked his way out of the slump a little bit on this road trip?
04:42You know, this was like, we're all eyes on Adamas in the three home runs that he hit,
04:46but Yaz had a pretty good road trip, and I think right now, with the way this lineup
04:50is playing out, he's got a stranglehold on right field for right now.
04:53And again, if you think about pitching and defense as still the backbone for what you're
04:58trying to be, and you get Chapman back, and you, maybe you can put, you know, Devers as
05:03your DH more so, and you've got Yaz as a good right fielder, and Jung Huli can go out there
05:07and get it.
05:08And so, you've got Adamas at short, who, as he hits, I think his defense will continue
05:13to improve, but you want your best defensive team out there, first and foremost, while
05:18also having your good offense.
05:19Dare I say, and I know everyone's been asking for everyday players, dare I say that come July,
05:27the Giants actually have an everyday player at every position.
05:32All of them.
05:36Your outfield, Ramos, Lee Yaz, infield, Chapman, Adamas, Fitzgerald, and Devers, your catcher
05:45is Bailey, Flores is your DH, Schmidt is your super utility, and then, you know, if you want
05:52to keep Dominic Smith as a left-handed hitter off of the bench, you know, cost probably is
05:58not long for this team.
05:59He's going to get sent down when Chapman comes back, you've got a backup catcher, let's play
06:05ball.
06:07Like, I could see the Giants, and there'll be injuries, and there needs to be days off,
06:12and all of those things, but it feels to me like that's what the Giants are starting to
06:17lean into.
06:18An everyday lineup, from top to bottom.
06:21Right.
06:21The whole damn thing.
06:22Might have a little battle at second, based on who's hitting better, because, you know.
06:28Maybe, Schmidt.
06:28Yeah.
06:28Yeah, but he can super utility, he can play anywhere in the infield.
06:31And Fitz can too, right?
06:33Can't he move over and play second and short, and he can play the outfield, we know that.
06:37But Schmidt now, with his work at first, can literally handle all four positions.
06:41Yeah.
06:41He's played all four on this team.
06:43No doubt.
06:43You know what I mean?
06:44So that truly puts you in that sort of super utility situation.
06:49But I mean, the way that they're kind of like playing it right now, that's what it feels
06:53like we're moving toward.
06:54Which is great, which is what we've been clamoring for.
06:57And you mentioned Patrick Bailey, and I do think that this move, much like the Jimmy Butler
07:02makes everyone around him better move.
07:04Well, now if you're Patrick Bailey, you have even less pressure to be an offensive force,
07:08because you obviously don't want to hit a buck 85 all year.
07:12But when you've got additional bats and additional run producers now, you can go out there and
07:17you can hit 185 and be a great defensive catcher.
07:21And it's a little bit less offensive.
07:22Well, Buster Posey, and I've heard this over at the ballpark a thousand times, Buster Posey
07:27sees that catcher position first and foremost.
07:29And this is coming from someone who's going to be in the Hall of Fame someday because of
07:33the way he could hit.
07:34But first and foremost, that catcher position is in charge of the pitching staff.
07:39And so anybody who wants to replace Patrick Bailey, I can already tell you right now,
07:44the answer is unequivocally no.
07:46You're right.
07:47If he hits 185, bummer, but he hits 185.
07:51Handle that pitching staff.
07:53Make sure that they are getting every strike call that you can get.
07:57Make sure that you keep throwing runners out at second base the best you can.
08:01Be in charge of that pitching staff.
08:03And especially with now what the rest of the lineup looks like, we will take whatever we
08:07get from you offensively.
08:08Thank you very much for being here and staying healthy.
08:11Yeah.
08:11Period.
08:12End of sentence.
08:13That's his job.
08:14That's right.
08:14And it can be his job more comfortably now because you've got Devers.
08:19And if Adamus continues to trend in the right direction, and ever since he had that day off,
08:24he actually has an OPS over a thousand, just six games, three in Colorado, three in LA.
08:29But he, over the last week, has been much closer to the player you thought you were getting.
08:34And if Chapman comes back in the middle of July or the beginning of July, whenever it
08:39is, he was tearing the cover off the ball.
08:42Hopefully he can yuck in again.
08:43And all of a sudden now you've got an offense because Ramos has been, he's been terrific.
08:49Ramos has been your most consistent guy.
08:50You know, I mean, Flores too, but, but Ramos does it with a little bit more, a little bit
08:55more pizzazz and a little bit more, you know, obviously legs on the base paths and whatnot.
09:00Sometimes a little bit too much legs on the base paths.
09:03But yeah, Ramos has been your best all-around player.
09:06Flores has been your best run producer.
09:08If Adamus can start to look the way that he looked over the last week, then yeah.
09:13Yeah.
09:13And now Devers is in the lineup too.
09:15Like, holy hell, man.
09:17You know, it like, it's been the message of the year, in my opinion, in Bay Area sports,
09:24which is look how one guy can change everything.
09:29That's been, that's been completely the message to me.
09:32I mean, and I think that it even happened with the Niners.
09:35If you want to extend this back a couple of years, you could easily make the case that
09:40that's who Christian McCaffrey was when they acquired him.
09:43And then when they subsequently lost him, look what one guy can do for your organization.
09:49McCaffrey, Butler, and now the hope is Devers.
09:52And it feels like in baseball, especially it's more subtle as far as what it does to the players
09:57around him, because he can be great and hot.
10:00And if the other eight hitters aren't pulling their weight, well, it probably won't portend
10:04in a great offense.
10:05But the subtle part of it is what happens to a batting order when you've got somebody like
10:11Raphael Devers, who's such a dangerous at bat, it makes pitchers treat the guys around
10:15him differently.
