00:01People who want to hold street parties could apply for their road closures free of charge,
00:05so hopefully people will have taken advantage of that.
00:08Yeah, and I hope there will be lots of street parties to bring up.
00:11It's great for communities to get together and do their own thing as well,
00:14but obviously that's what we're filling the gap for.
00:16Anybody who's not got anything on their doorstep,
00:19then they can come and celebrate with us.
00:21Next week marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day,
00:24VE Day, which marked the end of World War II.
00:27It's a celebration of peace and togetherness, and this year is being celebrated in plenty of different ways
00:32all across Cardiff, all across Wales, and the rest of the UK.
00:36Cardiff will be hosting memorials, remembrance services, and of course street parties.
00:40But for those who didn't manage to get a street party permit, Cardiff Castle here behind me
00:44is hosting a massive open picnic in the grounds to bring the whole community together.
00:49Yeah, so Monday, Bank Holiday Monday, here in the castle we've got free family picnic events
00:54to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
00:57So if you were to come here on Bank Holiday Monday, we'll have a bandstand with music all day.
01:01We've then got children's activities, craft activities, and the Firing Line Museum,
01:06which is part of Cardiff Castle, will be bringing out some World War II exhibits.
01:10Our Flat Home Island community group will be here.
01:15Flat Home played a really significant part in the Second World War,
01:18so they'll be telling us a bit about that and have some virtual reality tours of the island.
01:23And then we'll have lots of walkabout characters, circus characters, puppet shows,
01:27lots and lots of different things to keep family entertained all day.
01:31You're welcome to bring your own picnic, come and sit on the lawn, listen to the music, watch the shows,
01:36keep the children entertained. Yeah, and it should be just a really lovely day.
01:40Heather says that VE Day is a little bit different to Remembrance Sunday, for example,
01:44as it's seen more of a celebration of peace alongside the memorials.
01:48So the event is a great chance for bringing people together to celebrate,
01:51and even teach the kids a thing or two about World War II.
01:54Yes, I mean, VE Day is very much a celebration day,
01:58you know, celebrating the end of the war, you know, peace in the kind of 20th century.
02:03And yeah, it's important that we sort of remember it and celebrate it.
02:07So again, yeah, it's a really lovely opportunity to bring the family out together,
02:11where, you know, everything that we're putting on today will be like intergenerational.
02:15You know, there's plenty to do, whether that's kind of like, you know,
02:18little children or bringing the grandparents.
02:21And yeah, we're just hoping that everyone will come and really enjoy a celebration day
02:26here in the lovely grounds of Cardiff Castle.
02:29The castle has a storied history dating all the way back to the Roman times
02:32in some parts of the castle walls.
02:34But did you know that it also played a big role for people during World War II as well?
02:38Yeah, and you know, the castle, this part of the castle is open, free of charge to people,
02:42you know, all year round.
02:44And also it'd be a great opportunity for people to kind of see maybe parts of the castle
02:48or learn things they didn't know.
02:49So for example, the walls behind us, they have a tunnel that runs through them
02:53and those were used as bomb shelters during the war.
02:55So the castle itself played a part in keeping the people of Cardiff safe during the war.
