A multi-million pound renovation job for Cardiff Central has taken a step closer as it passed the latest round of council planning. It’s hopes the work will increase accessibility and help with those long waits after rugby days. Those agains the plans though, say that it’s far too grey and could do with some trees.

00:00Carter Central Station could soon be getting a multi-million pound refit after plans passed
00:08the latest rounds of council committee approval. The plans include renovating the front and some
00:13big-scale changes to the back of the station, the large foyer area and subway area, as well as a new
00:18building aimed at providing a new waiting area and retail space. Part of the plans will look to help
00:23the interior of the building cope better with large-scale events, particularly like Six Nations
00:26rugby days and concerts at the principality stadium where often people are waiting hours in the queues
00:31in the rush home. More space, better accessibility facilities and longer platforms are all measures
00:37aimed at cutting these long waiting times and keep Cardiff's capacity as a major event city,
00:41make more gigs and particularly the Euro 28-28 competition Cardiff will be hosting. The plans
00:48were given generally favourable feedback from committee members with councillor Emma Reed Jones
00:53saying that she loved the way that they are going to retain the historic features and the subways
00:57with the change of the lighting is going to make such a difference. Other councillors though did point
01:03out some drawbacks including a lack of green space around the site which is already all concrete and
01:08paving. Adding the computer generating designs lacked any colour and trees would have been a positive
01:13inclusion. Given the historic nature of the station, concerns have been raised around the possible impact
01:20renovations will have, including a glass facade at the front losing some heritage features. But those
01:25who support the plan said it will increase visibility and create natural surveillance.
01:32The plans aren't fully finalised yet and will need further scrutiny, but the classic train station
01:36will be getting a facelift at some point very soon. J.D. Watkins, Portable Local TV,
