Cardiff City need big changes before League One campaign

Cardiff City face a season of transformation ahead of their campaign in League One. Following relegation, the club has undergone significant changes, including a managerial overhaul and several key player departures. 00:00Now of course for Cardiff City it was a dismal season in the Championship

00:07There were some minor highs along the way but it was mostly bad

00:11Of course going down to League 1 the club means a big reset

00:15We've discussed a lot of times of late just exactly what they need to do in terms of the board

00:20Players, managerial situation, just how the club can go forward in the future

00:23But let's look back at the previous campaign and what got them into this situation

00:28Where were some of the big moments that caused them to go down

00:32And could they have been avoided because of course football, especially the Championship

00:36It's a long old season, 46 games and so it doesn't just happen on one or two games

00:41It happens over a long, long campaign but let's look back at them

00:44Let's go now to our Wales sport correspondent Charles Hague-Jones

00:49Charles, take us back through the season that was 24-25 for Cardiff City

00:54Under the likes of Omuriza and of course Aaron Ramsey right towards the end of it as well

00:58Even though he was unable to save his boyhood club

01:00Where did things go wrong for them

01:02And what lessons, crucially, can be learned from those mistakes that they made in the Championship

01:08And also, you know, I mentioned the small highs they had

01:11They won't seem like very big highs at the moment but what encouragement perhaps can be taken from them as well

01:17Going into what needs to be a really important season for Cardiff

01:20Where they need to spend as little time as possible in League One

01:24And get themselves back into the Championship as quickly as possible

01:27So Charles, what are your thoughts from the previous campaign?

01:32Thanks Dan, yes, obviously Aaron Ramsey, the big name linked

01:36And yes, it's certainly a gamble, there's no denying that

01:39But also, I think, you know, gambles can pay off

01:44Big risk, big reward sometimes is the way it works

01:47Especially in sport and in this sort of moment as well

01:50You know, a real chance to go and get a League One promotion for Aaron Ramsey

01:55And start his coaching career

01:56You know, he's made it clear he wants to continue to play in Wales' squad

02:00In terms of the World Cup coming up in 2026

02:03So that's fair enough

02:04But it's also had huge boosts from the likes of Craig Bellamy

02:07The current Wales manager saying, you know, Ramsey would make a fantastic candidate

02:12A fantastic coach one day

02:13Why not start now is the way I'm looking at it

02:16You know, as you say, Cardiff Bourne had an amazing career throughout

02:20You know, the top tiers of, you know, Italy, England

02:24He's worked with many fantastic managers as well

02:28So he's got a lot of experience, which is great to see as well

02:31So yes, Aaron Ramsey is obviously going to be

02:34His name is going to be fluttering around

02:35After the, you know, taking over interim manager at the back end of the season

02:39But there are a few things that they need to get right

02:43And that is, you know, away from Ramsey

02:46Let's look at a few of the candidates

02:47Promotion experience is a massive, massive, you know, thing that they need to make sure

02:52Now, obviously, they're going to be aiming for a swift return

02:56They want to go straight back up to the Championship

02:58There's no denying that

02:59Because if they don't, it is a slippery slope

03:01Of being, you know, hands-on in managerial decisions

03:04I'm sure that's going to probably continue

03:06And then you look at financial considerations and fan engagement

03:11You know, the fans have been really, really left in the dark over the last season or so

03:16They want to make sure they're back to understanding the plan

03:19Understanding the long-term vision of both the ownership plans

03:23And the managerial situation, you know

03:25Simple, you know, that manager, whoever it is, is going to walk in on day one

03:30And it will say on the board, you know, get back to the Championship

03:33That's going to be the main goal

03:35You know, there are a few names

03:37Nathan Jones is one of them

03:38Quite an interesting one

03:39You know, he did all right with Southampton

03:41You know, plenty of experience in the Championship

03:44Sol Bamber, a former Cardiff City player

03:47Popular among the fans

03:49Good leadership qualities

03:51Maybe a bit of a gamble

03:52Carl Robinson, the Salford City boss

03:55You know, extensive EFL experience now

03:57Under that Salford City project

03:59Is it time for him to move forward

04:01And hopefully get Cardiff City back?

04:04You know, let's take nothing away from the size of Cardiff City

04:07Stephen Schumacher as well

04:10Former Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle coach

04:12You know, he's experienced promotion as well

04:16So that could be a gamble

04:18But it could also pay off

04:19And then Ruben Sells as well

04:21The Reading manager

04:22Noted for his tactical approach

04:23Though, you know, it would be concerns about

04:26His fit with Cardiff's ownership situation there

04:29So there are a few names fluttering around

04:32They need to get it in soon

04:34And they need to get it right

04:35Because it's a massive season ahead

04:37For Cardiff City in League One

04:38One they hope will only be one season

04:40And they'll be back to the Championship
