Cardiff Castle has been a central part of the city, and now, after a few years of gigs, it’s become a central part of the city’s music scene. The castle welcomes some massive names to the capital this summer.

Cardiff is a city full of music. From the smaller venues like the Globe, all the way
00:05
up to the Principality, our city welcomes artists from all around the world. This summer,
00:10
megastars like Kendrick Lamar and SZA, hot off their Super Bowl halftime performance,
00:14
will be coming to the Principality, for example, with plenty more joining them. But one venue
00:18
in the city has been making its mark in the music scene, growing quicker than any other.
00:23
Behind me, we have Cardiff Castle, which tracks its history all the way back to the Roman
00:26
times, and has been a central pillar of the city for centuries. To an extent, the city
00:31
was built around this magnificent building, and in recent years, the music scene in Cardiff
00:35
is centring around it too. When in the past, massive acts like Coldplay would go to the
00:39
Principality, and big but not globally recognised would go to the old CIA, now a number of huge
00:44
talents are booking shows for the castle. The list is endless this summer, from The
00:49
Script to Alanis Morissette, Rag and Bone Man, Sting, The Pet Shop Boys, Faithless and
00:53
plenty more, including Welsh acts like Funeral for a Friend. With the loss of some iconic
00:58
smaller venues like the Moon Club, Goody Huw a few years ago, and fears for the future
01:03
of many, there is some relief to the fact that venues like Cardiff Castle are bringing
01:07
music to the city where they count. Just next to the castle, we also have Bute Park, which
01:11
is hosting none other than Tom Jones this summer, and even in the past, Sophia Gardens
01:15
welcomed bands like My Chemical Romance in recent years. There's a real landscape of
01:19
venues growing all around the city. Cardiff is brimming with music, and people across
01:24
the city will be happy to see it grow. There have been calls to help protect smaller venues
01:29
in the city, with some local council and Welsh Government schemes in place to help keep the
01:34
music industry alive. But, despite challenges for smaller grassroots venues, it's the big
01:39
names that keep on coming to Cardiff. James Reid Watkins, Local TV, and Cardiff Castle.
