00:04For a few brief shining months in the 90s, I worked the same boards

00:08and plugged in the same carts as Wolfman Jack, Dick Clark, and Alan Fried,

00:12but on a slightly smaller scale.

00:15My job at a local AM radio station was to convince listeners

00:18that their favorite oldies show, Zippo in the Morning, was actually local.

00:22I recorded brief weather reports, wrote spots for local advertisers,

00:26and occasionally did a live remote broadcast, complete with Zippo swag.

00:31In reality, Jim Zippo lived a comfortable life in Houston, Texas,

00:35and I only spoke to him a few times over the phone.

00:38If anyone bothered to ask, however, he just left the booth a few minutes ago.

00:42Sorry.

00:44I still took calls from local listeners who hadn't caught on to the concept of syndication.

00:49One caller regularly requested the song Georgie Girl by the New Seekers.

00:53By regularly, I mean every hour on the hour.

00:57My pleas to Houston, Texas fell on deaf ears,

01:00although Zippo did play it one time while I was there.

01:03The job ended when the station owner decided there was more advertising money

01:07to be made in the service of sports talk shows.

01:10There was no American Graffiti Melting Popsicle moment with the real Zippo,

01:15but I still hope a devoted listener finally got his long-distance dedication.
