00:05It was the middle of the 80s, and a high school friend told me about a wondrous new thing

00:10he had just witnessed the night before at his favorite watering hole.

00:14You could choose a favorite song, stand in front of a microphone, and instantly alienate

00:19everyone else in the room.

00:21It was called karaoke.

00:23Not being a singer myself, I really struggled to cough up an enthusiasm hairball for this

00:27successor to dwarf tossing.

00:30A few years later, another friend took me out to a local bar for karaoke night.

00:36My first selection ever was Elvis Presley's Marie's The Name of his latest flame, and

00:41it seemed to go okay.

00:43A few rounds later, I'm taking on Motown, Stax, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

00:48I became a convert and maintained that lifestyle for 20 years after that.

00:53I even got to be a karaoke host a few times.

00:56I've got friends in low places, I've spent jukebox money at the Love Shack, and I don't

01:01even call people by their names.

01:03I miss the earliest versions of karaoke, when singers relied more on liquid courage than

01:08actual ability.

01:10One night, I saw a guy belting out Don Henley's All She Wants to Do is Dance just before falling

01:16over the speaker and monitor.

01:18I thought all she wanted to do was dance, but all he wanted to do was walk.
