Wales headlines 5 January: Cardiff council look to cut costs

One man and one woman have been charged after the bodies of two babies were found in Wildmill in Bridgend at the end of November 2023. Silvinas Zodovskis 48, and Egle Zilinskaite, 30, have both been charged with two counts of concealing the birth of a child and preventing lawful burial.

Cardiff city council have said removing public bins could be a way of cutting costs as they face a 30 million pound deficit over the next few years. They also say bin collections could be changed to 3-weekly and removing street cleaning are options they are exploring. A public consultation is open until 4th of February.

A recent study from claims.co.uk of information from the office for national statistics has found that workers in Wales are the most likely in the UK to call in sick. On average almost 6 days are lost to sickness through the year in Wales, compared to less than 5 for elsewhere in the country.
