This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 16/06/2025 – High pressure means for many it will be a dry week with temperatures rising to heatwave level for many by the weekend.
Bringing you this week’s weather forecast is Alex Burkill.
00:00Yes, things are hotting up this week. We're going to see our temperatures rising and in fact many places are likely to get to their heat wave levels as we go towards the end of the week and into this weekend.
00:11Starting off though, looking at the bigger picture currently, and we have the jet stream running over northern parts of the UK.
00:18This is then driving a feature that's going to bring some fairly blustery and wet weather to parts of the northwest as we go through the end of Monday and into Tuesday.
00:27Most places though, under the influence of high pressure and as this high pressure amplifies through this week, we're going to see it becoming more dominant.
00:34Lots of fine weather on offer for many places and with that then, day on day, we're going to see our temperatures rising because of the sun bringing some decent warmth.
00:42But then towards the end of the weekend, this coming weekend, the high does drift away towards the east and that means we're going to change where our air is coming from just that little bit.
00:51And so by the weekend, we're going to be starting to drag in some of the heat that's across parts of France and Spain through this week where it is going to be exceptionally warm.
01:01And so we are going to see our temperatures rising even further and so it is looking pretty hot for this weekend.
01:07But back to the here and now and if we start off as we look towards Tuesday and like I said, there's some blustery wet weather across north northwestern parts as we go through Monday night and into Tuesday or because of a frontal system here.
01:20That front does push a little bit further southward.
01:22So across parts of northern England, perhaps into north Wales, a bit of clouds, some drizzly rain here.
01:27To the north of this, a fair few showers, particularly across parts of Scotland, some sunny spells in between, some decent sunshine across northern Ireland too.
01:34But yes, you do need to watch out for some showers and some brisk winds towards the northwest as well.
01:39Further south of the front though, another fine day, plenty of sunshine on offer and temperatures will be rising accordingly.
01:45Mid, possibly high 20s in some places towards the south and towards the east in particular.
01:52A bit fresher than this further north, especially if you get a bit more cloud lingering in a few places.
01:58But then as we go through the end of Tuesday and into Wednesday, we continue to see that high towards the south.
02:03It's going to build and so that is quietening our weather down.
02:06It's not going to be totally dry.
02:08There will be a few showers here and there, perhaps a bit of showery rain affecting parts of Scotland on Wednesday.
02:14A bit more cloud, perhaps feeding into parts of Northern Ireland, maybe some drizzly outbreaks here.
02:19But otherwise, again, a lot of fine weather to be had.
02:22There may be some patches of mist and fog during the morning, but these will be pretty quick to clear because it is, well, mid-June after all.
02:30And then with that, I'm expecting a decent amount of sunshine, perhaps a bit more cloud across some eastern parts, but nonetheless, some decent warmth or even some real heat behind it.
02:39And so mid to high 20s quite likely always fresher towards the northwest and, in fact, towards the far northwest, a bit more breeze still, keeping things closer to average.
02:49Then later Wednesday and into Thursday, that high pressure, more dominant across the whole country.
02:54So a very settled story, generally a fine picture as we go into Thursday.
02:59Again, not totally fine.
03:01Most places will have a dry day, but actually there's a weak system pushing across initially Northern Ireland and then feeding into Scotland.
03:09So bringing a bit more cloud for a time and a little bit of drizzly rain towards the far west of Scotland.
03:16Lots of sunshine on offer, again, for much of England and Wales.
03:19And we're going to see, like I said at the start, that day-on-day rise in our temperatures.
03:24So 28, 29 Celsius quite likely towards the southeast.
03:29It is going to be pretty hot.
03:30And we're going to start to see our humidity rising as well.
03:34But it says we go towards Friday, really, as that slight change in where our wind is coming from, where our weather's coming from.
03:40A bit more of a southerly flow.
03:42So that's when we're going to really start to see the humidity increasing because of that warm or hot air that's going to be coming in from Iberia.
03:50And so with that, then, there's also the risk of a few showers piling their way in, particularly towards Cornwall, perhaps Devon as well.
03:57And some of them then pushing up towards Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland and Wales perhaps could see some showers as we go through Friday.
04:05Most places, though, again, avoiding these.
04:07There's lots of fine weather on offer, particularly across central and eastern parts.
04:10And with that slight shift in where our air is coming from, I'm expecting temperatures to rise even further.
04:15So reasonable chance that we're going to get into the low 30s across some places on Friday.
04:20This will be the first time that we get to 30 Celsius so far this year.
04:24Even further north, we're looking at mid-20s for several places.
04:28And so it is going to be pretty, well, very warm or even hot for quite a few places.
04:33Now, more hot weather to come as we go into the weekend.
04:36There are some question marks as to exactly how things are going to develop.
04:40But I think the high pressure will shift just a little bit towards the east as we go through into Saturday and towards Sunday.
04:46So continuing to drag in some of that hotter air that's affecting Spain and France.
04:51There are some weather systems out towards the west.
04:53I don't think they'll affect us too much.
04:56But I think really as we go through this weekend, we're going to see our temperatures rising even further.
05:01So lots of fine weather, often quite sunny, and it should be largely dry.
05:05And with that, then, it's going to be very warm or hot, particularly across central southern parts.
05:09Even further north, it is going to be hot for some of us as well.
05:13Low to mid-30s Celsius looks relatively likely.
05:17Can't guarantee it, but it does look quite likely as we go through Sunday into Monday, perhaps.
05:22And then some question marks.
05:23Well, will we see a bit of a breakdown?
05:25I mean, yes, we will eventually, but exactly when that happens and how much thunder's mixed in with that breakdown?
05:31Well, there's still some question marks there to be answered.
05:34So definitely one to keep on top of.
05:35But I think we are going to see some pretty hot weather arriving in time for the weekend.
05:39And as I mentioned at the start, that does mean many places will be seeing their heat wave thresholds being met.
05:45And so always make sure you're safe in the hot weather that we're expecting.
05:49I will have a more in-depth look at what we can expect with the high temperatures in our deep dive, which will be available on YouTube on Tuesday.
