This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the week ahead 23/12/2024. It’s going to be a very mild Christmas with no snow expected. Bringing you this weekend’s weather forecast is Alex Deakin

00:00Hello, a fairly straightforward festive forecast this year.

00:05Think mild, think cloudy, and think dry.

00:08You probably won't go too far wrong.

00:10Here's the bigger picture, because as always,

00:12there's always some good detail to pick out

00:14in a weather forecast.

00:15We've got low pressure up across Iceland,

00:17high pressure down to the southwest.

00:19We're in between.

00:19And tucked in here, this is called a broad, warm sector.

00:24And that air will be sitting over us,

00:26moving in and sticking around throughout the Christmas

00:29period.

00:30Yes, we get this weather front at times,

00:32wiggling down across northern and western Scotland,

00:35bringing a little bit of rain, and trying

00:37to bring some cooler air in.

00:38But most of the time, we are in that milder air,

00:42and high pressure is dominating.

00:45So yes, it will be mostly cloudy,

00:46but it is going to be mild and dry for the vast majority.

00:50Notice the ice bars, still quite tightly packed together,

00:53certainly for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

00:55So it will be quite windy.

00:56But these are the Christmas Eve temperatures,

00:58getting up to 11, 12, 13 degrees in a few places.

01:02Maybe even 14 Celsius, where we see a little bit of sunshine.

01:06So well above average for the time of year.

01:08Most places, about 3 to 6 degrees

01:11above the mid-December average.

01:13And parts of Scotland, especially mild,

01:15more than 6 degrees above the average here.

01:17So yes, a very mild Christmas Eve,

01:21leading into a very mild Christmas period in general.

01:24It is going to be predominantly cloudy, though.

01:26And it's not going to be completely dry.

01:27There will be rain at times in Western Scotland,

01:29particularly over the hills, but even at lower levels for a time,

01:32Christmas Eve morning.

01:33Drizzly conditions over the Pennines,

01:35and maybe over the hills of Wales and southwest England,

01:38too.

01:38But the vast majority, I suspect, will stay dry.

01:41Also, the vast majority staying cloudy.

01:43But there'll be some breaks in the cloud generated

01:46to the east of Wales, and parts of the West Midlands,

01:48northwest England.

01:50May see some sunny spells, along with parts of northeast England.

01:52And northeast Scotland should also

01:54do OK for brighter spells and a bit of sunshine.

01:57It will be quite windy at times across northern Britain,

02:00but staying very mild.

02:01Even as we head into the big day,

02:03these are the kind of temperatures

02:04that Santa will experience during his deliveries.

02:08Double digits still across the board

02:10as we head into Christmas morning.

02:13He's also not going to encounter too much in the way of wild,

02:16windy weather.

02:17Yes, it'll still be breezy with lots of ice bars across the UK.

02:20The jet stream is pushing the low pressure systems up

02:23to the north.

02:24That's where the really strong winds will be high in the sky.

02:26But for us, as I say, no real problems

02:29for Father Christmas.

02:30Maybe a little bit of mist here and there,

02:31maybe some low cloud.

02:32And this weather front will still

02:34provide some rain on the big day over the Western Isles,

02:37and at times over the Northern Isles.

02:39And maybe parts of the far northwest

02:41of the mainland of Scotland could

02:42be a little bit wet at times.

02:44And it will still be quite windy here, too.

02:46In fact, generally, quite a blustery day

02:48across northern parts of the UK.

02:50The winds lighter in the south.

02:52Again, most places cloudy.

02:53Some breaks are likely perhaps a little brighter

02:56compared to Christmas Eve.

02:57But mostly, it'll be a grey Christmas.

02:59But temperatures will, again, be in double digits

03:02across the board.

03:0310, 11, maybe 12, 13 in a few spots.

03:07Not a great deal of change, even as we head into Boxing Day.

03:09High pressure dominating down to the southeast.

03:12Now, this weather front's just wiggling its way around.

03:15So Boxing Day won't be completely

03:16dry for traveling in Western Scotland.

03:18It will be wet here.

03:20And also, chances of that weather front

03:22just slipping a little further south,

03:23bringing some rain at times to the north

03:25and the west of Northern Ireland.

03:26It may actually turn a little drier

03:28across the far north and slightly cooler

03:30as the cooler air tries to push in.

03:32But certainly nothing cold.

03:34And further south, again, temperatures

03:36mostly in double figures.

03:37Mostly, it's just cloudy and dry.

03:39But notice temperatures just dropping down a degree or so

03:42after being at 12 or 13 on Christmas Eve.

03:45A degree or so down each day for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

03:48But the mild air is still in place,

03:50even as we head into Friday.

03:52Now, weather front perhaps just trying to slip

03:53a little further south.

03:55And the cooler air also trying with it.

03:57But generally, it's going to be another mild day on the 27th.

04:01Again, a lot of people will be heading to the road.

04:03So nothing too troublesome from the weather

04:05for traveling around.

04:06It will still be quite soggy over the highlands of Scotland.

04:09Maybe some blustery showers across the far north.

04:11A little bit of showery rain at times elsewhere,

04:13but fairly light, mostly only over hills and around coasts.

04:16Again, for the vast majority, just dry and cloudy

04:19kind of sums it up.

04:20Could be some fogginess in the mornings

04:22as well and the influence of that high pressure

04:24where we've got lighter winds.

04:25Signs of a bit of a change.

04:27The jet stream just tending to dip a little further south

04:31as we head towards the weekend.

04:32And that could start to mix things up a little bit more

04:35as we go towards the last weekend of the year.
