Hello, a fairly straightforward festive forecast this year.
00:05
Think mild, think cloudy, and think dry.
00:08
You probably won't go too far wrong.
00:10
Here's the bigger picture, because as always,
00:12
there's always some good detail to pick out
00:14
in a weather forecast.
00:15
We've got low pressure up across Iceland,
00:17
high pressure down to the southwest.
00:19
We're in between.
00:19
And tucked in here, this is called a broad, warm sector.
00:24
And that air will be sitting over us,
00:26
moving in and sticking around throughout the Christmas
00:29
period.
00:30
Yes, we get this weather front at times,
00:32
wiggling down across northern and western Scotland,
00:35
bringing a little bit of rain, and trying
00:37
to bring some cooler air in.
00:38
But most of the time, we are in that milder air,
00:42
and high pressure is dominating.
00:45
So yes, it will be mostly cloudy,
00:46
but it is going to be mild and dry for the vast majority.
00:50
Notice the ice bars, still quite tightly packed together,
00:53
certainly for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
00:55
So it will be quite windy.
00:56
But these are the Christmas Eve temperatures,
00:58
getting up to 11, 12, 13 degrees in a few places.
01:02
Maybe even 14 Celsius, where we see a little bit of sunshine.
01:06
So well above average for the time of year.
01:08
Most places, about 3 to 6 degrees
01:11
above the mid-December average.
01:13
And parts of Scotland, especially mild,
01:15
more than 6 degrees above the average here.
01:17
So yes, a very mild Christmas Eve,
01:21
leading into a very mild Christmas period in general.
01:24
It is going to be predominantly cloudy, though.
01:26
And it's not going to be completely dry.
01:27
There will be rain at times in Western Scotland,
01:29
particularly over the hills, but even at lower levels for a time,
01:32
Christmas Eve morning.
01:33
Drizzly conditions over the Pennines,
01:35
and maybe over the hills of Wales and southwest England,
01:38
too.
01:38
But the vast majority, I suspect, will stay dry.
01:41
Also, the vast majority staying cloudy.
01:43
But there'll be some breaks in the cloud generated
01:46
to the east of Wales, and parts of the West Midlands,
01:48
northwest England.
01:50
May see some sunny spells, along with parts of northeast England.
01:52
And northeast Scotland should also
01:54
do OK for brighter spells and a bit of sunshine.
01:57
It will be quite windy at times across northern Britain,
02:00
but staying very mild.
02:01
Even as we head into the big day,
02:03
these are the kind of temperatures
02:04
that Santa will experience during his deliveries.
02:08
Double digits still across the board
02:10
as we head into Christmas morning.
02:13
He's also not going to encounter too much in the way of wild,
02:16
windy weather.
02:17
Yes, it'll still be breezy with lots of ice bars across the UK.
02:20
The jet stream is pushing the low pressure systems up
02:23
to the north.
02:24
That's where the really strong winds will be high in the sky.
02:26
But for us, as I say, no real problems
02:29
for Father Christmas.
02:30
Maybe a little bit of mist here and there,
02:31
maybe some low cloud.
02:32
And this weather front will still
02:34
provide some rain on the big day over the Western Isles,
02:37
and at times over the Northern Isles.
02:39
And maybe parts of the far northwest
02:41
of the mainland of Scotland could
02:42
be a little bit wet at times.
02:44
And it will still be quite windy here, too.
02:46
In fact, generally, quite a blustery day
02:48
across northern parts of the UK.
02:50
The winds lighter in the south.
02:52
Again, most places cloudy.
02:53
Some breaks are likely perhaps a little brighter
02:56
compared to Christmas Eve.
02:57
But mostly, it'll be a grey Christmas.
02:59
But temperatures will, again, be in double digits
03:02
across the board.
03:03
10, 11, maybe 12, 13 in a few spots.
03:07
Not a great deal of change, even as we head into Boxing Day.
03:09
High pressure dominating down to the southeast.
03:12
Now, this weather front's just wiggling its way around.
03:15
So Boxing Day won't be completely
03:16
dry for traveling in Western Scotland.
03:18
It will be wet here.
03:20
And also, chances of that weather front
03:22
just slipping a little further south,
03:23
bringing some rain at times to the north
03:25
and the west of Northern Ireland.
03:26
It may actually turn a little drier
03:28
across the far north and slightly cooler
03:30
as the cooler air tries to push in.
03:32
But certainly nothing cold.
03:34
And further south, again, temperatures
03:36
mostly in double figures.
03:37
Mostly, it's just cloudy and dry.
03:39
But notice temperatures just dropping down a degree or so
03:42
after being at 12 or 13 on Christmas Eve.
03:45
A degree or so down each day for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
03:48
But the mild air is still in place,
03:50
even as we head into Friday.
03:52
Now, weather front perhaps just trying to slip
03:53
a little further south.
03:55
And the cooler air also trying with it.
03:57
But generally, it's going to be another mild day on the 27th.
04:01
Again, a lot of people will be heading to the road.
04:03
So nothing too troublesome from the weather
04:05
for traveling around.
04:06
It will still be quite soggy over the highlands of Scotland.
04:09
Maybe some blustery showers across the far north.
04:11
A little bit of showery rain at times elsewhere,
04:13
but fairly light, mostly only over hills and around coasts.
04:16
Again, for the vast majority, just dry and cloudy
04:19
kind of sums it up.
04:20
Could be some fogginess in the mornings
04:22
as well and the influence of that high pressure
04:24
where we've got lighter winds.
04:25
Signs of a bit of a change.
04:27
The jet stream just tending to dip a little further south
04:31
as we head towards the weekend.
04:32
And that could start to mix things up a little bit more
04:35
as we go towards the last weekend of the year.
04:38
From everyone at the Met Office, I'd
04:40
like to wish you all a very happy Christmas.
