00:00Hello and welcome to the Met Office forecast for the week ahead. Sunshine returns widely
00:05this week and it is easily going to be the hottest week of the year so far in the UK.
00:10The jet stream pushing well to the north of the country, allowing high pressure to build
00:14in and delivering sunny skies and day by day rising temperatures. A couple of flies in
00:20the ointment, the main one being northern Scotland where we do still have a lot of cloud
00:24on Tuesday. Some light and patchy rain, although even this tends to ease away and become
00:29confined to the Northern Isles by the afternoon. So sunny skies elsewhere and those temperatures
00:36rising from the word go with highs of the low to mid 20s widely expected by the afternoon.
00:44However, make sure you cover up. Of course the sun at the moment is as strong as it is in August.
00:49High UV levels are expected in the south, moderate further north. Then going into the middle of the
00:56week, temperatures build even further with that high pressure sitting firmly in place just to
01:01the east of the UK. We're seeing this sinking air warm up as it sinks under the area of high pressure
01:07and because of the sun building heat each day temperatures are climbing. So we start off Wednesday.
01:13It will be cool in some places but quite quickly through the day temperatures will climb and we're
01:20expecting pretty much cloud-free skies across the country. Again, except for the north of Scotland where
01:25there will be some patchy cloud, chance of a shower for parts of central Scotland but otherwise it's
01:31simply a sunny day and top temperature expected to be 27 celsius. So as we go into Thursday, the first
01:40day of May, it's going to be a very warm one. These are the kinds of temperatures we could see
01:46overnight as the minimum temperatures 15 or 16 celsius in some urban areas. A very warm start to the day,
01:54an uncomfortable night for sleeping and then those temperatures having had a head start will climb
01:59even further compared with the last day of April. However, we're already starting to see something of
02:05a change across Scotland and Northern Ireland. A bit more cloud coming south, the odd shower. Odd shower
02:10possible further south as well if temperatures climb enough but the air is very dry so any showers that
02:16do form will be very isolated for the vast majority. It's going to stay dry and sunny and look at those highs.
02:23Widely into the mid to high twenties across England and Wales with a max temp most likely somewhere
02:29between Bristol and London 29 celsius and further north. It's still warm but a little less so across
02:37Scotland and Northern Ireland as the cloud starts to move southwards. This is a front which, well its
02:42position is uncertain on Friday. It's going to very erratically and slowly drift its way southwards.
02:48It's likely to be somewhere between central and southern UK. Along that front a bit more cloud
02:53and a few showers about as well but the front will also impact temperatures and because of the uncertainty
03:00with the timing as it comes south there's some uncertainty about temperatures on Friday the 2nd of
03:06May. If the front is slowed down compared to what you see on the graphics so that it's held further north
03:12then it could be just as hot across parts of England and Wales compared with Thursday but most likely it
03:19will be coming south through the day and temperatures will be knocked a couple of degrees off compared
03:25with Thursday's high. And certainly further north cloudier skies a cooler feel compared with earlier in
03:31the week. So one or two showers about on Friday because of that weather front but actually again for the vast majority it is dry
03:38and as we go into the bank holiday weekend regardless of the timings of that front it looks likely that
03:43high pressure will start to drift further north west allowing cooler air to drift southwards slowly and so
03:50certainly a different feel on Saturday, Sunday into Monday. I think a bit more cloud around, lower temperatures back
03:57towards average for the time of year and one or two showers are possible during the bank holiday weekend
04:03but that high is still close by and so it's certainly not going to be an unsettled weekend for the vast
04:09majority it's going to stay fine even if it is not quite as warm as it will be as we go through April
04:15and into May. So we'll have the very latest on that of course through the next few days you can stay up to date with
04:22the Met Office on YouTube.
