00:00Okay, this is what is going on on Season 13 of Project Runway.
00:22Lucky Season 13.
00:26We have 18 designers that are coming to their last audition.
00:29And they're all dying to compete on Project Runway.
00:32I really, really, really, really, really, really, really want to make it to Fashion Week.
00:37And we're narrowing it down to 15 designers, so three are being cut.
00:43I don't get nervous, I just get ready, and that's going to be my motto to win this competition.
00:49I'm not going to be so big-headed as to tell you I'm going to win,
00:51because you know what, everyone who ends up saying I'm going to win is that dumb one who's out.
00:59This is so exciting.
01:00We brought the 18 finalists to meet our judges, Nina Garcia, Zach Posen, and Heidi Klum, who will make the ultimate decision.
01:07This was very good.
01:10Being here one step away, to be honest, is so nerve-wracking.
01:14I'm right there.
01:18All I need to do is just, like, you know, cross that finish line.
01:22The designers who move forward will be joined by the winner of our Runway Redemption competition,
01:27where you, our viewers, have chosen one designer to return to compete on Project Runway.
01:32All right, let's get to it.
01:33Let's do this.
01:35Hi, everybody.
01:36Oh, hi, Tom.
01:37I'm so happy to see all of you here.
01:40It's a big day.
01:41I'm going to give you the lay of the land.
01:43You will each be presenting individually to the judges.
01:46Be thoughtful, and also, I just want to say, relax.
01:49I know you're all nervous.
01:50I'm nervous.
01:52So, breathe.
01:53All right.
01:54So, welcome, and prep away.
01:57Of course, I wish I was already on the show.
01:59That would be such a relief.
02:00But it's also, it's part of the ride.
02:02Our pieces are in stark contrast to each other.
02:04Yeah, I know, exactly.
02:05That's why I jumped on your ride.
02:06Mitchell.
02:07Yeah, they call me Shark.
02:08Shark?
02:09Yeah, please.
02:09Shark.
02:10I'm going to call you Shark.
02:11My name is Sharkita Glover, and I'm from Detroit, Michigan.
02:13Oh, this was part of my spring collection, and these are sample pieces.
02:16You know, being from Detroit, born and raised, I'm a reflection of hard work.
02:20We're a strong city.
02:21We're go-getters, so bring it on.
02:25Do you work, like, a 9-to-5 job, or you do this full-time?
02:28My first degree is in computer engineering.
02:30I was working at an investment bank.
02:31It's only recently I started designing, like, every day.
02:34Full-time.
02:34Yeah.
02:35Fashion is where I belong to.
02:36Not computers, not Wall Street.
02:37Sometimes I think I'm going out on a limb.
02:39You know, who are you to be so confident that you can, you little small potato can make
02:45it out there.
02:46You know, Karina, you're the first designer to go in, so sell it.
02:50I'm ready.
02:51Good.
02:52Welcome.
02:53Karina, tell us a little bit about what kind of designer you are.
02:56I'm American Indian from the Puyallup tribe, so a lot of my stuff is inspired by my growing
03:01up.
03:02And do you wear your own clothing?
03:03I like this coat.
03:04I do.
03:04I love that next coat.
03:06I'd love to see this on.
03:07Great.
03:08Am I allowed to buy things today?
03:11What do you think your customer is?
03:13I love the New York woman.
03:15I'm from Eugene, Oregon, but I currently live in Brooklyn, New York.
03:18I come from a family of artists, so kind of living in that starving artist environment
03:22is awesome.
03:23It's a different silhouette.
03:24It's like a seraphic, slash coat.
03:27Really, really beautiful.
03:28How do you work under time pressure?
03:30That's pretty much the only way that I work.
03:32I mean, like right now, I'm number one, right?
03:34And I'm pretty calm.
03:35You shouldn't be.
03:37I did the screen printing myself.
03:40This is screen printed?
03:41Yeah.
03:42Good heavens.
03:43I had a very traditional family.
03:45My parents were very orthodox, but we moved to a big city, so there was a lot of change
03:50in their thinking.
03:50We do believe in our traditions and our culture, but see it in a modern way.
03:55These are actually middle finger prints.
03:57So there's a lot of humor in your work.
03:59Yeah, it's because there are states back home where women are not treated well.
04:02Oh, I know.
04:03Give the middle finger to the men who don't treat them well.
04:07Good for you.
04:09This collection here was a part of my senior thesis.
04:11I'm fresh from school.
04:12It was inspired by how the human body creates speed.
04:15I was a hip-hop dancer for eight years, so when you dance, you have to be able to move
04:19in your clothing.
04:19I'm very familiar with the body, how it works, the jacket, with the sleeve that's kind of
04:24detached from the body almost.
04:26You do have a lot of ideas, new ideas, sometimes maybe too many.
04:30I want to tell my story, and I feel like my work will always be original.
04:34You know, he's young.
04:34But he's fearless.
04:37You can start moving your work over to the rack that Karina's just clearing.
04:42Okay.
04:42Okay?
04:42It's definitely been a long road.
04:44Working for other companies kind of crushed my spirit a little bit.
04:46And then I had my daughter, who totally re-sparked that wanting to design again.
04:51And now I have a kids' line called Devon Rose named after my daughter.
04:54Hi, Emily.
04:55Hi.
04:55Hi.
04:56Did you make your dress that you have on?
04:57Yeah, I did.
04:58To match your hair color.
04:59It's actually like a shirt dress.
05:02It's plated through the back.
05:04A lot of my work is androgynous.
05:06I'm impressed.
05:07Hi.
05:08Hi.
05:08Where are you from, Emmanuel?
05:10Originally, I'm from Mexico.
05:11My parents came over here when I was a baby, and I live in Dallas.
05:14The women in Dallas love their fashion.
05:17So I designed for girls like Kylie and Kendall Jenner.
05:20Rihanna would totally wear this.
05:21It's sheer.
05:22This has lace sleeves.
05:23Beautiful technique.
05:25Nicely made.
05:26My only issue is I see three totally different designers on a rack here.
05:30This is everything for me.
05:32I mean, I left my job.
05:33I left my apartment.
05:34Everything I've got is right here.
05:35I love this yellow number in the middle.
05:39That's like pop.
05:40It has pockets.
05:41I'm obsessed with pockets.
05:42Tell us a little bit more about you.
05:43Self-taught.
05:4437 single, so.
05:46Waving to that camera right there.
05:48Hey, fellas.
05:49Your attention to detail is exceptional.
05:52I like how your rack looks.
05:53It feels secure.
05:55I love what you do.
05:57I see a lot of volume.
05:59Silhouette is my first love as a designer.
06:01I want to bring my avant-garde approach to the show.
06:05Alexander is very creative.
06:07Hi.
06:07Hi.
06:08How are y'all?
06:09You look like you just came from the beach.
06:11Well, I live in South Florida, and the short of the shorts, they're closer to God, so.
06:15Okay.
06:16I'm all about fun and enjoying your life.
06:18Fashion's important to me because of where I came from.
06:21I came from very little, very humble beginnings.
06:24I mean, it's not really even humble.
06:26It's kind of like tragic.
06:28This is one of my short cocktail numbers.
06:29I have this fun tank top here using my print.
06:32There's something very easy about it.
06:34Something tells me he could surprise us.
06:36I think you're right.
06:37I like him.
06:38I like him too, but he's going to be feisty.
06:41I like the classic style, so I'm inspired by designers like V&A, Chanel, Madame Grey.
06:48I play with versatility, so this piece can be brought around to the front like that,
06:54or it could be draped around the head like a scarf.
06:56I feel like you are showing us one dress in a way.
07:00Just a little one note.
07:01Hmm.
07:02This is a look that I just did for an event called Black Hearts Ball.
07:05Now, is this for a man or is this for a woman?
07:07It's for a woman.
07:08Mm-hmm.
07:09I guess my muse is a middle-aged lesbian woman.
07:12I really love using contrast fabrics, and I think that it makes for more of a kind of futuristic feel.
07:20My favorite part about your pieces is all the seaming.
07:23Yeah, I do it all myself.
07:25My only worry would be to not be so close to the designers that you love.
07:30It looks like we just went to the Rick Owen store and just bought a few things.
07:35This one is a lot of cut, and also in the back.
07:38You have some good ideas.
07:40I already present twice in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in the Lincoln Center.
07:44Good, so you have some experience.
07:46I see you have talent, and that you have creative ideas.
07:50I worry about the taste.
07:53The what?
07:54The taste.
07:57Hi.
07:58Hi, I'm Sam from Texas.
07:59Hi.
08:00Hi.
08:01I like to think my girl is contemporary.
08:03She's still hip, you know, urban-y.
08:05Only a girl from Texas uses the word urban-y.
08:08Yeah.
08:09Kini is your name, right?
08:10Yeah.
08:10Kini Okohokuloa.
08:12That's my first name.
08:13Kini is fine.
08:14You're a denim man.
08:15My denim cocktail dress.
08:17I love it.
08:18A jumper.
08:19I love it.
08:20She loves it.
08:21Goodbye.
08:21Next.
08:23Fäde zu grau.
08:24Du kommst bestimmt aus Deutschland, oder?
08:26Das stimmt.
08:27Yeah.
08:27Ich komme aus Deutschland.
08:29Fäde zu grau.
08:30That must be German.
08:32Yeah.
08:32What is that a map of?
08:33It's just a print I designed.
08:36Cool.
08:36This is really helpful.
08:37If you're on the dance floor, like, two hours or something, which I am, it's, like, 80s
08:40night on Sunday, so we're going, like, Janet Jackson and so.
08:44I don't like anything in your rack, but I like what you're wearing.
08:49Oh.
08:49Okay.
08:50So, it's a leap of faith here going on this.
08:54In school, they always called me the nervous kid, so I'm always going to be nervous.
08:59You, over here.
09:01Okay, sorry.
09:02That's okay.
09:02I'm confused.
09:03Hi.
09:03Hi.
09:04The first look I'm going to show you, it's kind of like a dress shirt with, um, the collars
09:09at the bottom.
09:09It's very well made.
09:11This is kind of like a play on a v-neck t-shirt.
09:13I think it looks really good.
09:15It's clean, fresh, and straightforward.
09:18I like what you brought, but I think you have to amp up the volume a little bit more.
09:23I can turn it up.
09:24This one is, like, hand embroidery, and this collar is actually detachable.
09:30I call these shoulder plates.
09:31It's a hammered metal sheet.
09:34So, this is actually a mild, abusive word, which means stupid or dumb.
09:37And because these women in India, they can't say anything I wanted the clothes to say.
09:42Chandi, I love your point of view.
09:43It's my favorite thing I've seen all day.
09:45You're playing with tradition.
09:47Craft.
09:48Subversiveness with language, but it somehow all has a sense of ease.
09:53Bye.
09:53Bye.
09:54Bye.
09:54All right, let's decide on who will be on Project Runway Season 13.
09:58We did love Alexander.
10:00I'm still not on Project Runway.
10:01I don't know, I'm not even thinking that way.
10:03I'm thinking I am on it already.
10:05Charquette was a yes for me.
10:06The shark is good.
10:07Jefferson?
10:08I think Jefferson should be in the yes pile.
10:10I do too.
10:11Then we have my German friend, Fade.
10:13What was on the rack was frightening.
10:15I don't think that that was bad.
10:16I don't either.
10:17Emmanuel.
10:18I think we should give him a shot.
10:19Oh.
10:20So he goes in the maybe pile, maybe?
10:22Mitchell did his own print.
10:23You guys liked Mitchell.
10:24I'm on the fence with him.
10:25Carrie.
10:26You guys had allergic reactions to her.
10:28All right, so this is it?
10:29No more changes?
10:30I'm going to go meet Tim and I will tell the designers.
10:33Designers, all of you brought interesting fashion and you all have a clear point of view.
10:40Fifteen of you will be in and three of you will be out.
10:47Sean.
10:48Samantha.
10:49Christine.
10:50Sandia.
10:51Alexander.
10:53Congratulations.
10:54You're in.
10:54You're moving forward.
10:55It felt so crazy good.
10:59To see this dream is a big deal.
11:01Andra.
11:03You're also in.
11:07Congratulations.
11:12Tim.
11:14I'm sorry.
11:15You're out.
11:17Best wishes, Tim.
11:18Good luck to you.
11:19I'm disappointed.
11:20I don't know.
11:21Maybe I just wasn't enough for them.
11:26Karina.
11:27Keeney.
11:28Emily.
11:29Jefferson.
11:30Sharquita.
11:31Fade.
11:33I'll do this, Dubai.
11:34You're in.
11:37Even to say it just makes me smile.
11:40I'm a part of Project Runway Season 13.
11:42Hernan.
11:44You're also moving forward.
11:46Congratulations.
11:46Congratulations.
11:49We're down to our last four designers.
11:52Two of you will be in.
11:54And two of you will be out.
11:56Man, I just came all this way.
11:58I spent the entire ocean.
11:59And I'm going to die at the shore.
12:04Coming up on Project Runway.
12:06You're going to give the judges one look for spring.
12:10Holy .
12:10Girl, you're going to pass out.
12:12Two of you will be in.
12:20And two of you will be out.
12:24Mitchell.
12:27You made it.
12:28You're in.
12:28I'm sure my shorts had something to do with it.
12:33Because Heidi was probably like, those legs.
12:38Nozinga.
12:40I'm sorry, but you're not moving forward.
12:43That's wishes Nozinga.
12:44Good luck to you.
12:46I feel like I'm a strong designer.
12:48But it is a little sad.
12:49Rejection kind of hurts.
12:50So.
12:51Carrie.
12:52You're moving forward.
12:55Congratulations.
12:57Okay, this is happening.
13:02Like, yeah.
13:05Emmanuel, I'm sorry.
13:06That means you're out.
13:07I tried my best.
13:08And unfortunately, it didn't happen for me this season.
13:12So all I can do is just move forward.
13:15Congratulations, guys.
13:16Yes.
13:17Congratulations.
13:22Everyone grab a glass.
13:24Here is to season 13 of Project Runway.
13:27This is so cool.
13:42Yay, get a corner.
13:46I know, right?
13:48I'm freaking out.
13:49What the hell?
13:50Oh, my God, I love this.
13:51Oh, I want that.
13:52Oh, man, I'm so stoked.
13:53She's on my hands already.
13:54I can't do it.
13:56Oh, I want to open it so bad.
14:00There is a ventriloquist doll in there, and you have to make his look.
14:03Oh, my God.
14:04I'm going to assume it's fabric, but it's Project Runway.
14:07You have no clue what they're going to throw at you.
14:10I'm next to the vet.
14:11You're next to them?
14:12Yeah, I don't know who they are.
14:13Who's it going to be?
14:14I don't know.
14:15This is going to be the veteran.
14:16This is slightly intimidating.
14:18I voted.
14:18I voted for this one.
14:20Amanda, we'll find out.
14:21We'll find out.
14:22We'll find out.
14:25Hi, everyone.
14:27Congratulations for being season 13.
14:30How brilliant is this?
14:32Angela, you look terrified.
14:35So welcome to your workroom.
14:37To my right, we have the Aldo styling wall to accessorize your looks.
14:42Next door is the sewing room with machines provided by Brother International Corporation.
14:46And in the designer's lounge, you'll find a fully stocked Samsung food showcase refrigerator.
14:52I'm sure you've all noticed that we have an empty workstation.
14:56The fans of the show voted to bring back a former Project Runway designer.
15:01And they were voting among Ken Lawrence from season 12,
15:05Alexander Pope from season 12,
15:07and Amanda Valentine from season 11.
15:10Let's see who it is.
15:16It's Amanda Valentine from season 11.
15:20Hi, guys.
15:21Welcome.
15:22The biggest motivator to come back was knowing that the first time I was here,
15:27I didn't show my true self.
15:30Crap, I'm going to cry, aren't I?
15:32Don't cry.
15:33Focus on the work.
15:34Now I know I can win.
15:35You are all competing to go to New York Fashion Week.
15:38And those of you who make it will be presenting a collection for spring.
15:43For this first challenge, you're going to give the judges a glimpse of what that collection would be if you were to make it today.
15:49But you're only making one look.
15:52You each have a black trunk at your workstation.
15:55Each trunk contains five fabrics of three yards each.
16:00And not all trunks contain the same fabrics.
16:03So you can beg, borrow, and steal among each other if you want to.
16:07But please don't steal.
16:08That would not be good.
16:09You have one day for this challenge.
16:14All right, everyone.
16:15Open your trunks.
16:16Good luck, and I will see you later.
16:20Oh, my God.
16:22Super.
16:23What do you got?
16:23I got this really, like, dope, edgy print, which I'm dying for.
16:28What have you got?
16:30Is this something you like?
16:31No one's going to want this.
16:33Do you want any of these for this one?
16:35I don't.
16:41This is going to be like three layers.
16:43Love it.
16:43If we're doing spring-summer, you know, I think young,
16:46fun, so I'm going to do a rocker that's open in the front,
16:49and it's enclosed in the back, so I'm really excited for that.
16:56I'm creating an asymmetrical top.
16:59The pants are asymmetrical as well,
17:01with some detail that shows some skin on the side hip.
17:10It's going to be like a one-piece.
17:11It's going to be like a really edgy jumper.
17:13Oh, fun.
17:14Yeah.
17:16I grew up with a lot of traditional state of mind.
17:19Me and my husband, we had an arranged marriage.
17:22We met for five minutes, and after two days, like, I knew that I was getting married.
17:28Oh, snap.
17:29Hi, everyone.
17:34Hello.
17:34Hey, Tim.
17:35I'm going to check in with each of you.
17:38Hi, old buddy.
17:39How does it feel to be back?
17:40I feel so much better this time around.
17:42When I see what you've done already, it establishes a level of quality that has to be consistent.
17:47Welcome back.
17:48Thanks, Tim.
17:48I'm still not sure how short the short she'd be.
17:51What I'm thinking of here is having three layers, so that way, hopefully, when she walks, they'll flutter a little bit.
17:56This is not going to do what you want it to do.
18:01What I want it to do.
18:02You need to push it.
18:03I picked these zippers, and I thought I'll combine them and do piping.
18:08This concerns me.
18:10Why not use that print?
18:11I tried putting it in, and it'll end up looking a bit crafty.
18:15Doesn't look as crafty as this does.
18:17Angela, hi.
18:18The pants, it's got this asymmetrical detail.
18:21This should crop up so that it shows some skin.
18:24Skin right here?
18:26Yeah.
18:26You may have to give your model some grooming assignments for tonight.
18:31What do you mean?
18:32Well, this is getting a little close to some other anatomical parts.
18:39Tell me what you're doing.
18:40I'm doing a jumpsuit.
18:42You know, I love doing a high neck.
18:44Karina is going to be my biggest competition at this point.
18:46The way that she's manipulating the knit is really interesting.
18:49Is that a belt?
18:50Yeah, it is.
18:51It's just so limp.
18:53And how's Mitchell?
18:55Mitchell's good.
18:56Good. Talk to me.
18:57She's going to be just a cool, edgy, fun girl.
19:01The top is pinned in or sewn in?
19:03It's sewn in right now.
19:06Why isn't it a separate?
19:07I didn't really want to do separate.
19:08It also has the 80s athletic vibe.
19:11Well, I don't hate that, actually.
19:13Okay, own it.
19:14All right, designers, your models are coming in in an hour, and you will have half an hour with them.
19:20And designers, later today, you'll be moving into Gotham West, one of Manhattan's newest and most luxurious apartment buildings and home of Gotham West Market.
19:28I will see you in the morning.
19:29This is so nice.
19:37She's beautiful, she's tall, so bubbly.
19:40You ready?
19:40This reminds me of myself.
19:42The jumper fits her really well.
19:44The only thing I'm really concerned about right now is I don't know how much of the side boob I really want to show out there.
19:50I don't even have a dress.
19:53I just have sleeves.
19:54Okay, so how do you feel, like, around your neck?
20:00It's tight.
20:00Does that feel comfortable?
20:00My garment is looking really, really good on the model.
20:02She has a little sass to her, so that works good.
20:05We got this.
20:09Oh, my God, that was the most stressful 30 minutes ever.
20:12I liked yours, by the way.
20:17Her ass is completely out, though.
20:19I feel panicked inside, but I'm not letting anybody see me sweat.
20:25Did it fit well?
20:26Yeah.
20:27Yours?
20:28I had nothing to fit except sleeves.
20:29I am running out of time.
20:31I need to take a few deep breaths.
20:35There's a lot to do in two hours tomorrow.
20:38Oh, it's time to go, guys.
20:39Yeah.
20:42Oh, okay.
20:48It's beautiful.
20:49That's a nice view.
20:50It is a beautiful building.
20:52Cool.
20:54How do you think was struggling today?
20:55I think Angelo was struggling.
20:57I'm more about the Indian.
20:59Sandhya.
21:00And Karina.
21:02Oh, my God, so Karina was going through something amazing.
21:05That's what I thought, too.
21:07Only day one.
21:08It's so not what you think it is.
21:12Coming up on Project Runway.
21:14Yeah?
21:15Yeah.
21:15Let's head down to our first runway show.
21:18Excuse me.
21:18Excuse me.
21:19Angela is ironing her garment while the model is still wearing it.
21:22Here we go, girl.
21:36We got action.
21:38It's runway day.
21:39I'm excited and nervous at the same time.
21:42You feeling good, Jefferson?
21:43I am.
21:44I'm feeling good.
21:45And you?
21:45We got this.
21:46Yeah.
21:48Good morning, everyone.
21:50Good morning, Tim.
21:51Your models are coming in momentarily.
21:54You were to send them to the Philip B. Hair Studio and the Mary Kay Color Design Studio,
22:00all right?
22:01Use the Aldo styling wall very thoughtfully.
22:05Okay.
22:06Have a great morning and make it work.
22:08Thanks, Tim.
22:09Are you okay with not wearing the bra, right?
22:15Yeah.
22:15Yeah, that's good.
22:16Yeah.
22:16That looks amazing.
22:18Hold it right there on the sides.
22:20Okay, turn around for me.
22:22And then the butt looks magical.
22:25Mitchell's look, it looks keen.
22:27The top is just pulling everything down.
22:29It looks a little too young.
22:31Take that, Tim.
22:36If we could play with like an ombre of orange with a pop of color.
22:40This at play, I think it would be a really nice compliment without it being really obvious.
22:45I want to do a nude lip.
22:47My look is very, very spring and summer.
22:49We'll just use like a lip gloss like this.
22:51It just gives a really nice sheen on the lip.
22:54Like an ombre kind of effect from light to dark.
22:57Yeah, we can do that.
22:58Her eyes will just have like a block of color.
23:01I got you.
23:02Does anyone need help with anything?
23:10I have time.
23:12Yeah.
23:14You're welcome.
23:14I'm a nice guy sometimes.
23:16You take scissors?
23:18Yeah, I'm just afraid.
23:22Sandhya, her look looks like a stained curtain.
23:25I don't think it looks high fashion.
23:28It looks thrown together.
23:29I'm just really lost.
23:31Someone's going to have to let me borrow a lint brush.
23:34Welcome to the Philippine room.
23:36So I really wanted to do a high knot bun because I'm going to do a really cool black and white headband.
23:40Like a messy top knot.
23:41Top knot, yeah.
23:42So I was thinking like maybe like a messy kind of looking top knot.
23:45Yeah, I think if you bring it all back and then we have a couple pieces coming out, it'll be like very, very nice and right on front.
23:52We're going kind of a New York downtown street vibe.
23:54Bowl of art a little bit more.
23:56And then just really like work our texture.
23:58Thank you so much.
24:01What do you think about Sandhya?
24:03I've never really seen it up close.
24:04I was helping her to like finish it as she could.
24:07But I'm not in love with the look.
24:09I think she'll be in trouble.
24:11Sandhya's look was kind of weird.
24:12It seemed like a basic cut dress with a sleeve that wasn't, I don't know.
24:16I don't get it.
24:18But if she wins, let's just say.
24:22Let's just not put that on.
24:26Designers, in 10 minutes, you and your models and I are going down to the runway.
24:3110 minutes, everyone.
24:33Her hair just started beating a little bit faster.
24:37Sorry, baby.
24:38I'm going to do this to make you more beautiful.
24:43Perfect.
24:45Just hang on.
24:46The back is a little bit.
24:47I need to fix the back.
24:48Can anyone have a needle?
24:50Angela is still running around the workroom like a madwoman.
24:53No, it was on the wrong, wrong way.
24:56Excuse me, excuse me.
24:57She's even ironing her garment while the model is still wearing it.
25:04Designers and models, let's head down to our first runway show.
25:08Yay!
25:09It's going to be fabulous.
25:11Come, everyone.
25:14Is that out?
25:15All right.
25:22Hello, everybody.
25:23Hi.
25:24Welcome to the runway.
25:25It's very nice to see you all again.
25:29Amanda, you ready for it one more time?
25:31I think so.
25:32I'm just going to listen to my gut and I'm going to make what I want to make.
25:36Okay, designers.
25:37For this challenge, we ask you to create a look that would fit into a spring collection designed by you.
25:43This season, we have a big prize package and it is worth over $300,000.
25:49The winner of Project Runway will receive $100,000 from Red Robin to launch their business.
25:55And the opportunity to design a fashion accessory for Red Robin servers.
26:00A shoe and accessory collection from Aldo to help enhance their upcoming runway shows.
26:05A premier home entertainment system courtesy of Samsung from Mary Kay, an entire year's worth of beauty products for their fashion shows and professional makeup artist services for their debut show.
26:17A complete sewing and crafting studio from Brother Sewing and Embroidery.
26:22A 2015 Lexus NXF Sport.
26:26And travel and hotel accommodations to fashion capitals and inspiring locations around the world from Best Western International.
26:34And the winning designer and the winning model will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
26:38All right, let's say hello to our judges.
26:41First, we have acclaimed designer, Zach Posen.
26:44Hi, designers.
26:45Hi, Zach.
26:45Welcome.
26:46Creative director for Mary Claire magazine, Nina Garcia.
26:50Hi.
26:50Hi, everyone.
26:51Good luck.
26:52And star of the hit show, Modern Family, Emmy Award winner, Julie Bowen.
26:57Welcome.
26:59Thank you, Heidi.
27:01I'm excited to be here.
27:03It's the first runway show of the whole season.
27:05Do you watch the show, Julie?
27:06I've missed maybe one season of all of them.
27:10I'm really good on the weird people.
27:12I'll pick out the weirdo here.
27:13I haven't decided yet.
27:16We're also very excited to have Tim Gunn here for the runway show.
27:20Yay!
27:22So he will not be judging you.
27:24As you know, he is your mentor.
27:26He will have the Tim Gunn safe.
27:29And here's how it works.
27:30If at some point during the competition, he disagrees with us, the judges,
27:34then he can exercise his save.
27:37That eliminated designer can then return to the competition.
27:41But that can only happen one time.
27:43We also have an anonymous runway show.
27:45So your work will have to stand on its own.
27:48Okay, let's start the show.
27:56It looks very different from what everyone else has done.
27:59I have my own voice, which is very personal, very individualistic.
28:13I don't think it's necessarily strong look for me.
28:16All I see is always flaws.
28:17I'm paying attention to the back, where it's causing a problem.
28:25I'm hoping my creativity will pull me through.
28:34I'm super confident.
28:36The structural element up top is standing up.
28:39There's no flappiness.
28:41The dress is moving on the bottom.
28:43Overall, I think I executed my idea.
28:45I feel confident when my look comes down the runway.
28:58I think that I achieved exactly what I wanted.
29:02It's very different from what everyone else has created.
29:06She looks great.
29:14And she looks futuristic.
29:16And I didn't even realize that my design had that element.
29:19I feel really good.
29:19I'm the only one who's using an all-knit black fabric, which I don't mind at all.
29:36I love the look, and I just really want to be safe and move on to the next challenge.
29:40I think Bella looks so young and fresh and a little bit hip and interesting.
29:53Definitely slightly different from everyone else's.
29:56I feel like she looks like a really cool person wearing new fashion.
30:00What I'm sending down the runway is 100% what I wanted to do.
30:11I'm confident.
30:13I feel like it represents a spring look.
30:15And I think it has everything and potential to win.
30:18The proportions are just how I wanted them.
30:27Adding the print with the solid blue gives it a really nice, fresh spring look.
30:38I'm looking at Zach's face, and he totally hates it.
30:41I think I need to step it up.
30:43It's very, like, ready-to-wear, and I think it needs to be more show.
30:46I'm hoping that I'm not going home on the first challenge.
30:55I feel confident.
30:57I feel that she's making a beautiful work, and I love the outfit, and I love the styling.
31:06Everything works perfectly.
31:16It stands out.
31:18It's different.
31:18I love the color.
31:20The styling is amazing.
31:27I really think I'm in the top.
31:29I'm very excited.
31:39I am very happy that it looks great.
31:40And my colors, I was excited that they looked great on her.
31:43I was very lucky that it all pulled together perfectly.
31:55This is probably one of the only times that I've just felt great.
32:01That talk is awesome.
32:03That's my girl. That's the vibe.
32:05She looks cool as a**, and I know it.
32:13I think my first look coming down the runway is very exciting.
32:20I could not be happier with the movement and the layout.
32:25I'm very proud of this look.
32:34It's flowing, the colors popping off the lights, the skirt has movement.
32:43It turns out better than I envisioned.
32:45I'm over the moon. It's an amazing feeling.
32:52Okay, we have just learned which designer created which look.
32:56If I call your name, please step forward.
32:59Amanda.
33:01Jefferson.
33:04Mitchell.
33:06Sandia.
33:08Sharquita.
33:10Angela.
33:11If I have not called your name, congratulations.
33:16Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next round.
33:18You can leave the runway.
33:24Well, we're safe.
33:25I'm confused.
33:26I'm not confused.
33:28Confused.
33:29Who do you think is going to win?
33:31I want Char to win.
33:32I think Char is going to win.
33:33I want Sandia to win.
33:35I think Sandia is going out.
33:38If you saw that dress in Iraq, Sam, would you have to do that?
33:41Do you buy it?
33:45The six of you have the highest and the lowest scores.
33:49One of you will be named the winner.
33:51And one of you will be out.
33:53All right, let's bring out your model.
34:09Sharquita, tell us about your design and how this represents you as a designer.
34:12I decided to do a spring shirt real flowy, open in the back, kind of simple and clean.
34:19And of course, add pockets to the skirt.
34:20You got to have pockets.
34:21I thought this was so charming.
34:25I love the fact that you took this cotton jersey and made it look so special.
34:30You took an ordinary fabric and you turned it into an extraordinary top.
34:36I really like this very much.
34:39I love a pocket.
34:40You know, as a human who's had children, the crop top still makes my mind explode with fear.
34:48But it works here.
34:50Did you drape the top in the actual fabric?
34:53Yes.
34:53Well, I think that helps.
34:55You know, she took the fabric and actually worked with the volume of the fabric instead of a muslin first.
35:00I can also see more pieces that you would create with this in a fashion show.
35:04Because basically, this is supposed to be one of your many looks.
35:07Big peak, right.
35:08Elegant and edgy.
35:09It's cool.
35:11Mitchell.
35:12Okay.
35:12So, initially, the challenge we got was to design for spring.
35:16And that's kind of perfect with me because I live in South Florida.
35:19And that's kind of like my vibe anyways.
35:21I just want to take her to a resort.
35:22My girl's really cool and fun.
35:23And if I were a girl, I would design something like this for myself.
35:27I had very little to write about this outfit.
35:31Okay.
35:32Why?
35:33Because I felt it didn't really say much.
35:36It's a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.
35:38It's just very basic and elementary.
35:42I thought this was actually very spring, a lot of fun.
35:46It is very junior.
35:47But I happen to like ensembles sometimes.
35:49Yeah.
35:50I mean, it's supposed to be for a collection.
35:51So, it's one piece in it.
35:52I could turn this into a pant and do a top.
35:54This doesn't come in dialogue.
35:55I thought it was a top and a pant.
35:57The pants fit really nicely.
35:59The top feels a little DIY.
36:01Like, things are lifting off.
36:03And I'm not sure how it's connecting.
36:06And it just feels like it's not as polished as it could be.
36:11You described a woman as fun.
36:13We need to have more adjectives than fun.
36:15And understand there has to be more than that.
36:18Okay.
36:18I understand.
36:19Sandhya, tell us about your look.
36:20As soon as I opened the box, I saw a lot of patterns.
36:24The first thing that came to mind was the Indian Spring Festival of Holi.
36:28There is a certain rawness to it.
36:30But still, it's really colorful and fun.
36:33So, I took my fabric.
36:35I dyed it.
36:36Then I wanted to keep my edges a bit raw, you know.
36:38Because the fabric was floral and so feminine, I wanted to give it that edgy feel.
36:43I love the silhouette of this dress.
36:45I feel like for real life, though, the ripped off, it's a little like an amorous moment that was interrupted, you know.
36:54The prince was just about to...
36:57Yeah.
36:58Yeah.
36:59I feel like that gives it the edginess.
37:01Maybe it's not something that actually people would wear, but it is for a fashion show.
37:05And I feel like that gives it the extra something special.
37:08And I haven't seen anything like that before, so you surprised me.
37:11And it feels personal, like all those little details.
37:14And that makes clothing special.
37:16I think with you, you took something and made it into a fantasy.
37:21I think this was very inventive.
37:22I like the way you manipulated the fabric.
37:25You dip-dyed the top.
37:26I have full confidence that you have the creativity to make it in this show.
37:32Congratulations.
37:33Thank you so much.
37:34That's really encouraging.
37:35Jefferson.
37:36I wanted to give a little bit of edgy, but a little soft.
37:40So in the top, with the different shapes and combining them, and then on the bottom,
37:44I wanted to give you something that was a little more soft.
37:46I thought this was terrible.
37:49The proportions of this, this short top, then you see the skin, and then it's the high-waisted.
37:55To me, this looks super strange.
37:57W-T-F.
38:01The crop top is so short and so angled, it looks like a bib.
38:05And the shorts, they're so high up, it looks like she's wearing some big diaper.
38:09These are not everybody's cup of tea shorts.
38:12Can you just explain what's bad about the shorts?
38:15They're not flattering, and the proportion is weird.
38:17I worry that you don't see that there's a proportion problem.
38:20Yeah, that's why I'm asking these questions, so I can really understand where you're coming from.
38:25This is one of those examples where the way you, right now, are dressed and look pushes me towards having more faith in you,
38:32because you look good.
38:33Mm-hmm.
38:34I agree.
38:34I want the whole thing.
38:37And it says to me, okay, that guy is cool.
38:40Maybe there's something cooler here that I'm not getting.
38:43I'm still not sure I'm getting it all the way, though.
38:45Thank you, Jefferson.
38:48Amanda.
38:49So, since my last time here, I've been really focused on who my girl is.
38:54My girl is really into dramatic day wear.
39:00She loves contrast, be it in draping versus structure or color, just anything contrasting.
39:07You know, to do something that is interesting and commercial is very hard, and I think this is one of them.
39:15The pants look fabulous.
39:17The way you styled her, she looks groovy, she looks cool.
39:20I want to be that girl.
39:23You know, I thought the top was really beautifully draped, looked really professionally made.
39:28There was sophistication.
39:29It wasn't a wow runway piece.
39:31It was good.
39:32I'll take it.
39:33I think those pants fit so well.
39:36I don't need the pattern, because they're so well-made.
39:40They don't need to have a lot of gris-gris going on.
39:43For me, it didn't stand out enough.
39:46I think you have to bring us more fashion.
39:47For me, it is almost too normal, too wearable.
39:50I feel like if you want to win Project Runway, you have to turn the volume up a little bit more.
39:57Angela.
39:58I want to show just something new.
40:00I like playing around with lines.
40:01I like playing with asymmetry.
40:03And I still want to make it wearable.
40:05Instead of calling those slits, I'm going to call them sluts.
40:09Oh, Nina.
40:12Nina's back.
40:13Yeah.
40:13Wow.
40:14Plus, if she turns around, when she was walking out, that was very, very low.
40:20That was a mistake.
40:21That was a mistake.
40:22Low.
40:22I think that there's a lot of skin, and that fights the simplicity of this outfit.
40:28You have this neckline that is very unusual, the slits in the pants, then you have the
40:32tail on the side.
40:34Your eye just doesn't know where to look because there's so much going on.
40:37It's walking the line between too sexy and bad taste.
40:41When I was in the audition, I was told I was to settle, and I over-conversated.
40:48And we said, turn up the volume a little bit.
40:50Don't be too quiet.
40:51Bringing up drama doesn't necessarily always mean skin or being tricked out.
40:57Thank you, Angela.
40:59Okay, we've heard what you had to say.
41:01We're also going to take a closer look at the clothes, and then we bring you back in
41:05a little bit.
41:05You can leave the runway.
41:11Hey.
41:12Hey.
41:12Hey.
41:13Hey.
41:14Talk to us.
41:15I have the worst critique.
41:16They call me slutty.
41:17Such a horrible critique.
41:19It was so bad.
41:21Really?
41:22If Nina shaded the proportions, she said, my top looked like a bib.
41:25She said, she looked like she had diapers on.
41:27I just, I was just so lost.
41:30I was lost.
41:33Hi.
41:33How are you?
41:34Good.
41:35Very interesting runway presentation, yes?
41:38Yep.
41:38May we start with the team on the bottom?
41:40Yes.
41:41Yes.
41:41Rachel, step right over here, please.
41:43I want to see this.
41:45You can see it?
41:45Oh.
41:46No.
41:46It's like easy access.
41:48Those are fun pants.
41:49The pants are not bad.
41:50If they were with a different top, they wouldn't be bad.
41:52They're normal-sized.
41:53Heidi, you don't think those pants need to come with a gift certificate for a Brazilian?
41:57But then maybe it was our fault because we told her to amp it up the last time we saw
42:01her.
42:01Well, that's a real important question to ask a designer.
42:04If you amp it up, there's ways it can go right and ways it can go wrong.
42:09The shorts are bicycle shorts.
42:10They are bicycle shorts.
42:11No, it's sewn.
42:12No, it is sewn.
42:13It lifts up in a funky monkey way.
42:16That's always the problem.
42:17We see these clothes closer up and they look worse.
42:20Yeah, I'm really, this doesn't take me anywhere.
42:23No.
42:23Like, I don't think this would get you into design school.
42:29When I see this blousey pant, I would be like, oh my gosh, does this girl not have
42:35a mirror at home?
42:36How can she walk out of the house this way?
42:37If those were a trouser, would you have a problem?
42:39I mean, that's a problem.
42:40It just is.
42:41Like, the wind blows.
42:43And you have a bubble.
42:43Zach.
42:44I mean, it's basically like a crop top for maternity.
42:47So, the top three.
42:49Come on out.
42:50Yeah.
42:50We have Angelica wearing Sharquita.
42:52Beautiful.

43:04I haven't seen anything like this before.
43:06No, you haven't.
43:06I thought she really has a unique idea.
43:09I'm intrigued.
43:09I want to see more.
