00:00In war, there are no time outs, no contrived popularity contests to decide life and death.
00:15This program is about the 83 young men of class 234 and their six months long struggle to become US Navy SEALs
00:26in a training course called Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL Training or BUDS.
00:33BUDS is far more than another reality television survivor contest.
00:39There is only one rule to remember, it pays to be a winner.
00:56You better look around at your boat crew mates.
01:13After 25 minutes of pandemonium, the last boat crew of class 234 finally escapes the chaos of the grinder.
01:20This class is never going to see Saturday.
01:26Breakout is a calculated exercise designed to create confusion and destroy class cohesion.
01:32It is working to perfection.
01:34You guys have five seconds to inspect each other and get ready for C.
01:38Class 234 is disoriented and confused.
01:42After less than 40 minutes, the first lesson of Hell Week is clear.
01:47Individuals fail, only teams survive.
01:5114, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.
01:57What is your problem?
01:58All I'm asking you to do is count 39 guys.
02:01You tell these guys to shut up and pay attention or I'm going to beat you.
02:06Class 234 is immersed into 58 degree water for up to 15 minutes at a time.
02:19It's called surf torture.
02:21Every man's willingness to endure cold must be unquestioned.
02:30Within minutes, the quitting begins.
02:32I've been thinking about it a lot lately too much.
02:34You're not even sure.
02:35I know.
02:36It's not that.
02:37It's not the cold.
02:43You guys better come together to class.
02:45Instructors carefully watch for early signs of hypothermia.
02:50At night, in water so cold it shocks a person's breath away, seconds last for hours.
02:55Stand by for the rest of the hour!
02:573, 4, 5, 6, 6, 3 out!
03:11We're going out of sight, 3 to your present, 1 to your heart, Casey.
03:14You guys are taking way too long to fall out of your pocket.
03:17You don't want to fall out?
03:19Go ahead and drop them.
03:20Call it?
03:21Go ahead and drop.
03:22Cold is used to measure a student's capacity.
03:24a student's capacity to endure hardship seals believe that if a man cannot handle the cold
03:30on a beach in southern california he would never tolerate the misery seal teams encounter on real
03:36world missions when a man is cold the last thing he wants is to get any colder
03:53the ocean is without mercy and so is holy
04:01under the constant gaze of instructors there is no place to hide
04:14what's your name first night they're kind of sluggish they're all trying to hold
04:18back kind of reserve their energy thinking it's going to help them in the long run
04:22get on your phone get your crap on hurry up first night it's just always like a test
04:27testing the water see how it's going to work for them are you ready are you ready to go
04:31go
04:36week is less than four hours old
04:41the cold is affecting every student's ability to perform simple tasks
04:46focus leaders wake up without saying one word i want you to get in your boats get out in the boat
04:54if you don't want to be here
05:07Up!
05:08Get the boat up!
05:09Let's go!
05:10Get this boat up!
05:11One, two, three, four!
05:14If you don't want to be here, these five guys can row this boat out to the water.
05:23It's not a big deal.
05:24Just go report to the senior chief.
05:26He'll get you out of here.
05:29Three rotating shifts of instructors supervise the class 24 hours a day.
05:35For the students, each moment seems harder than the last.
05:39The next time one of the instructors tells you to get your head in the water,
05:43you better put your head back and keep it in the water.
05:46From the outside, the methods of Hell Week might seem like harassment,
05:50designed to force students to quit.
05:52But every hour is carefully planned, intended to discourage individualism and reward teamwork.
05:59Hell Week is a scripted blueprint of planned chaos.
06:06Every minute requires urgency.
06:08Each evolution is in context to a real-world SEAL operation.
06:12Get up here! Hurry up!
06:14When Legg breaks a bootlace, he and his boat crew learn that one man's problem quickly becomes every man's pain.
06:21All your men suffer while you're over here playing with your boots.
06:24Take care of your carrier. It takes care of you.
06:26Four hours into an arty bus.
06:28You should have replaced those shoelaces before you even started.
06:30Hey, we've got to stop the op because I've got to fix my boot.
06:33You can't even handle a pair of boots.
06:35Are you going to leave men?
06:36What a surprising rest I've gotten.
06:37You don't belong here, sir.
06:38What a surprising rest I've gotten.
06:39You do not belong here.
06:40What?
06:41Take an arrest while your men suffer and wait for you.
06:45You better find the rest just last day.
06:46The first three days, they get absolutely no sleep.
06:49Hurry up!
06:50By Wednesday, I think they get like an hour there.
06:51Get up here!
06:52Thursday, get like another hour.
06:54Thursday night, they'll get an hour.
06:56But by the end of the week, it's like a total of three to four hours.
06:58And there, too, is if you've got a fast boat crew and they're finishing earlier than everybody else.
07:02You know, they get time to sit down and take a little nap.
07:05You know, 10, 15 minutes here and there.
07:07But by the end of the week, it adds up.
07:11It's a real gut check.
07:13It's a real slap in the face.
07:16You just have to take it in stride, you know.
07:19Don't let it get to you.
07:20Keep pushing off.
07:25Cold, wet, miserable.
07:27Stay fired up.
07:30Take an evolution at a time.
07:32One evolution at a time.
07:34Stay fired up.
07:35Go!
07:36Every week in phase one, the class must run four miles in 32 minutes.
07:41This week is no exception.
07:43I did a lot of soul searching and found that the program wasn't for me.
07:47I've been thinking about it a long time.
07:48I've been thinking about it all week.
07:49I fessed up to myself and I said, listen, this is not what I want.
07:53You know, I backed down.
07:55I don't have a problem with that, so it's just the way it is.
07:58The winter is warm and you are done.
08:02The class returns to the surf zone for failing to make the time.
08:05Hughes wins and is allowed to lean against the hood of the instructor's vehicle.
08:09Winner, get wet.
08:10Winner, get wet.
08:11This pattern of competition will repeat until morning.
08:14One, two, six, one.
08:18By the dawn's early light, six students have quit.
08:21The remaining 33 trainees now receive their first medical evaluation.
08:26As far as getting showers, they take showers twice a day.
08:30They got a little bit of time with the docs,
08:32so the docs will come over and make sure there's nothing going on.
08:35One, two, three, four.
08:39Pretty cold.
08:40As you can see, everyone's shaking.
08:42Very tough.
08:43Your legs are all sore from being up all night,
08:46so you're moving kind of slow.
08:48Everyone's just getting, you know, tired and it's just going to get worse.
08:52So, damn cold.
08:54You doing all right?
08:55Hanging in there.
08:59Boat crews are selected by height.
09:02The shortest group is nicknamed the Smurfs.
09:04Came in last every race.
09:07We like last place.
09:09We like to be hammered.
09:11Come on, people.
09:12I'm tired of the talk.
09:13This is only Monday.
09:15You are failing miserably.
09:19In battle, SEALs believe effort is often the difference between victory and defeat.
09:25Getty's boat crew one is lagging.
09:27As an instructor exhorts them to defeat the Smurf crew and avoid last place,
09:32boat crew one has no choice but to accept the challenge.
09:35They can't even make the same ground per step.
09:38You are saying a lot about yourselves right now.
09:41The worst part of that is your mom and dad are going to know all about it.
09:45The Smurf crew wants to beat you.
09:48Let's go.
09:49They're going to die.
09:50Stay with it.
09:51Stay with it.
09:52They're going to die.
09:53There is the finish line right up ahead.
09:55If you stop now, they will beat you.
09:57I assure you.
09:58I'll be damned.
10:00Boat crew one's reward for winning is a few minutes rest in the head carry position.
10:05I'm tired as hell and hurt.
10:09The Smurfs receive the penalty for last place and are reminded it pays to be a winner.
10:16Toughest thing so far?
10:18I don't know.
10:19There really hasn't been anything too tough so far.
10:21Log PT early, early this morning sucked.
10:24Not enough food.
10:25I don't know.
10:26It's like a long day.
10:27I wish we were a little further along.
10:28But, you know, I just deal with the BS and go with it and that's all it is.
10:33Just hungry.
10:34I mean, you're burning a lot of calories out here.
10:37The way I look at it, five days of pain for a lifetime of pride.
10:42The four-mile ocean swim is a welcome escape from instructors.
10:46But Class 234 knows there are still five days and four nights to go.
10:51And every one of them will be long and cold.
10:55Hell Week is a test of a student's physical and emotional limits.
11:04Worrying about what comes next is the surest way to fail.
11:08The best part about lunch is it's lunch on Monday.
11:11We got a little tuckered out this morning, but we didn't really get a chance to eat last night.
11:15So we started to wear down a little bit, get a little dehydrated, but I think we'll be all right now.
11:20I think it's worse at night.
11:21It's colder at night.
11:22The sun's not out.
11:24Daytime gives you a little bit of hope.
11:26The day's at least started.
11:28Nighttime doesn't.
11:30We're doing all right.
11:31We haven't lost anybody in the boat crew yet, so...
11:33When two more students quit, the class is strangely unaffected.
11:39The cold and their own hunger numb them to the loss.
11:43It's nothing personal, but eating lunch remains the priority.
11:46Huh?
11:47Well, bandages quit.
11:48What?
11:49So we're getting some new people.
11:50What?
11:51You just quit.
11:52So we had to give away Rogers.
11:54How many seals does it take and screw it in a light bulb?
11:57Sir, save your boat crew before I drop them all down.
12:00None.
12:01Seals just stand there and let the world revolve around them.
12:03Good answer.
12:04Two.
12:05Three.
12:06Four.
12:07Most men come to BUDS for excitement and challenge, but seals want only those who are aggressive
12:13and able and willing to sacrifice for their peers.
12:16We're missing two guys.
12:17We're missing two guys.
12:18We're missing two guys.
12:19We're missing two guys.
12:20We wanted somebody to get shot in combat.
12:22We're missing two guys.
12:23We can't do our mission anymore.
12:25I want to know if they quit.
12:26Get out!
12:27Put the log down.
12:28Put it down.
12:29What two guys?
12:30Morrison.
12:31Morrison.
12:3218 hours after Hell Week begins, the Smurf crew again feels the pain.
12:35Where do you think they went?
12:37What?
12:38I was a Smurf crew.
12:39I didn't tell them yet.
12:41I don't want to quit on those guys during an evolution.
12:44I didn't want to be under the boats with them and not be able to perform.
12:50Your shipmate, Morris, D-O-R.
12:55Twenty-nine students remain.
12:57The boat crews reorganize.
13:00Apprehension grows as the sun goes down.
13:03The only thing more miserable than being cold and wet is being cold and wet in the dark.
13:09I'm done.
13:11Hmm?
13:12I don't want anymore.
13:13You sure?
13:14Yeah.
13:18You're not joking with me.
13:19Nope.
13:23I respect your decision either way, dude.
13:24But, uh...
13:27Like I said, just be absolutely sure you know what you're doing.
13:29Yeah, I do.
13:30I'll see you in a couple days.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Christmas at my place.
13:33Yeah, I'll have a good stand by him.
13:34Yeah, I'm done.
13:35Come here.
13:36You sure?
13:37Come here.
13:38When I first met him, you know.
13:39Freewheeling, fancy free.
13:40It's all about being a team guy going out and getting crazy.
13:41He's been chasing us for a long time.
13:42You know, if he's done, he's done.
13:43I'll, you know, I can respect that.
13:47I don't know.
13:48I don't know.
13:49I can't say I'm gonna follow suit.
13:50I know your situation there.
13:51What about your situation?
13:52What about your situation?
13:53What's...
13:54Walker's decision to DOR causes other students to question their reasons for being here.
13:57I'm not sure if you're going to quit.
13:58I'm sure you're going to quit.
13:59I'm sure you're going to quit.
14:00You're not sure.
14:01You're not sure.
14:02Go sit down.
14:03Go back with your boat.
14:04He's away from whether he wanted to quit or not.
14:05We want to give these guys the benefit of the debt.
14:06I'm not sure if he's done.
14:07He's done.
14:08I can respect that.
14:09I can't say I'm gonna fall asleep.
14:10I know your situation there.
14:11What about your situation?
14:12What's...
14:13Walker's decision to DOR causes other students to question their reasons for being here.
14:17Instructors attempt to persuade them to stay.
14:19You're not sure.
14:20Go sit down.
14:21Go back with your boat, people.
14:22You're not sure.
14:23Go sit down.
14:24He's away from whether he wanted to quit or not.
14:25We don't want to give these guys the benefit of the doubt.
14:27Even though we give the impression that we're trying to get these guys to quit or not.
14:31We're trying to get these guys to do this thing.
14:34Every student believes he can meet the challenges of Hell Week.
14:38But no one is ever prepared for the sheer sacrifice required.
14:42After talking to him the second time, he just didn't have it in him.
14:45I actually decided to quit yesterday.
14:47Actually last night.
14:48I hung in for...
14:49I was going to give him a day.
14:51It's tough for me to quit anything.
14:53I just don't want to do it anymore.
14:56I'm not too cold.
14:57I'm not too tired.
14:58I just lost the desire for it.
15:02You've got to give him credit for being out here trying.
15:04It's not for everybody.
15:0530% make it.
15:07Look left.
15:08Look right.
15:09In less than 30 minutes, seven students drop on request.
15:13The harshness of Bud's training is dictated by the SEAL mission.
15:17Their profession requires a dedication beyond the common experience.
15:21The instructor's response is predictable.
15:24They order the class back into the water.
15:26Hurry up!
15:27I think it's just the sun went down in the cold MREs and the motivation turned off like a light switch, I guess.
15:38He's back there.
15:39Leave him alone.
15:40Leave him alone.
15:41Let him just come up.
15:42Stay alive!
15:43Stay alive!
15:44Stay alive!
15:45The police tour simulates a SEAL platoon patrolling to their extraction point.
15:49On a real-world mission, missing the rendezvous could leave them exposed and complicate further rescue efforts.
15:55Class 234 enters the 57 degree water barefoot to tread water for 15 minutes.
16:09Stay alive!
16:10After 32 hours, only 22 students remain.
16:14It's going to be cold for a few minutes.
16:18Tread some water.
16:19Cold water and lack of sleep relentlessly invade mind and body until every nerve is exposed, every emotion is revealed.
16:29The job of the SEAL instructors is to discover how each student reacts to stressful conditions.
16:34Every student is studied for signs of distress, such as hypothermia.
16:47Instructors continue the evolution, searching for any sign of uncertainty in the class.
16:53Nice push-ups, Potter.
16:54Nice!
16:55Down!
16:57Class 234 returns to the water, stripped to their shorts.
17:01Let's go!
17:02Undressing is purely a psychological ploy to make students feel susceptible to getting colder.
17:08It doesn't affect their body temperature, but each grueling return to the water can break a student who cannot filter out the pain.
17:22Look at me.
17:23Cover!
17:24Look at me.
17:25Oh.
17:26Go!
17:27Hell Week is a contest of will, calculated to bring each student face-to-face with his breaking point and challenge him to push beyond it.
17:35In the end, the motivation to remain is a student's commitment to his teammates.
17:41Some day it's gonna end.
17:42It's not that far away.
17:43And when you look at the big picture, one week, the rest of your life is absolutely enough.
17:47I can get comfortable for a week.
17:48I can stay awake for a week.
17:49You know, I'm gonna recover.
17:50I'm gonna be fine.
17:51When Class 234 is not fast enough to the rendezvous on their base tour, the officers are reminded to lead from the front.
18:05This is pathetic.
18:06I hear more out of Rivera than I do you guys.
18:10What's up with that?
18:11You guys are supposed to be working together as a class, as a team.
18:14If they don't see you guys putting out, and trying to stay awake, when you're supposed to stay awake, and keeping them fired up, and telling them what to do, if they see you guys back there with your head hung low, what the hell are they gonna feel?
18:30One, two, three, go!
18:33Instead, we're playing in the bay.
18:35You guys on the base tour weren't putting out.
18:38You're not putting out.
18:39In one evolution, there's a consequence.
18:41A consequence in this case was getting in the water and doing some rocking chairs.
18:45Failure to maintain performance standards in training means getting wet.
18:50Failure to do so on a SEAL mission means death.
18:53One, two, three, go!
19:00Tuesday is a big day.
19:05Is today Tuesday?
19:07Today is Tuesday.
19:1238 hours after breakout, class 234 receives its first hot meal and a half an hour to eat it, uninterrupted.
19:20Walker's a distant memory right now, huh?
19:22Not a distant memory.
19:23I mean, Mark's my boy, but, yeah, as far as the class is concerned, yeah.
19:27I mean, they were shocked.
19:29He's been a big motivator for everybody.
19:31But, uh, what can you do?
19:34But that's what Hell Week's all about.
19:36It's all full of surprises.
19:38Expect and unexpected.
19:39Mealtime allows each man to contemplate his own situation.
19:43They can only wonder how much worse it will get.
19:46I'm hoping tonight's going to be easier than last night, because my worst thing is the cold.
19:51And last night we were cold.
19:5434, listen up.
19:55Make sure you pass every word.
19:57After a long day, Geddes is attracting unwanted attention from the instructors.
20:02As OIC, he is expected to motivate the class, yet his boat crew is continually finishing last in every competition.
20:10You realize you're under the microscope, don't you?
20:12Yes, I do.
20:13You know why, right?
20:14A lot of the instructors and the staff are watching me because I'm going to be an officer out there, and they want to make sure I'm squared away.
20:22Hurry up!
20:23Catch that boat.
20:25You better start motivating these guys, sir.
20:28You're not here to survive this. You're here to take charge of this.
20:31Yeah.
20:32You either get these guys to put out, or you can lead.
20:35You realize that you're hanging on the edge, don't you?
20:39Yes.
20:40Find an excuse to win.
20:42No.
20:43Crush them.
20:44Absolutely crush the competition.
20:46Keep going.
20:48You either have weak spots in your crew, or you're the weak link.
20:51Now which is it?
20:52Where's it falling apart at?
20:53Why can't you produce me a crew that can hang?
20:57Come on, crew!
20:58Come on, crew!
20:59Come on, crew!
21:00The instructors move Geddes to another boat crew to test his leadership.
21:03When they also finish last, Geddes is assigned to the Smurf crew for one last chance.
21:08How do you think you did?
21:09You did really good.
21:10You did really good?
21:11You were strong.
21:12We were first.
21:13We just jumped in the ocean.
21:14Okay, you're doing better.
21:15You did really good.
21:16You did really good?
21:17You were strong.
21:18We were first.
21:19We just jumped in the ocean.
21:20Okay, you're doing better.
21:21My legs feel like they're going to fall off.
21:22Yeah?
21:23I don't know.
21:24I don't know.
21:27You did really good.
21:36I don't know.
21:37You did really good.
21:38You did really good?
21:39You were strong.
21:40We were first.
21:41We just jumped in the ocean.
21:44Okay, you're doing better.
21:45My legs feel like they're going to fall off.
21:49If you see sunlight on us in the morning, you make it.
21:55So, I'm counting on that, because I'm in pain.
21:58I'm in a lot of pain.
22:00Mudflats.
22:01I'm going to have these guys crawl around in mud for about two hours.
22:05Max.
22:06Max.
22:07Feet.
22:08Feet.
22:09Stomachs.
22:10Stomachs.
22:11Cram your faces down into the mud.
22:13Faces in the mud.
22:15Students know that if they can last until sunup,
22:18completing Hell Week is in sight.
22:20Warmed by the fire, their main concern now is not getting injured.
22:24Believe it or not, I've done a lot of different jobs.
22:27I was a professional tap dancer on Broadway at one time.
22:38I think my biggest fear when I came here was failing.
22:41I don't want to fail.
22:42If you fail in training, you fail in real war.
22:44If somebody told you they didn't think about quitting,
22:47they'd be a liar.
22:48Yeah, I said it in my mind.
22:50Especially when it gets really cold out.
22:52You always think that, yeah, it'd be nice if I could go home
22:54and take that warm shower, but after that warm shower,
22:58I mean, you're going to kick yourself in the ass every day
23:00for the rest of your life.
23:01I don't know.
23:02I guess I just have a don't quit attitude.
23:05I'm not leaving until I've accomplished my goal.
23:08The only thing that separates us from the guys that quit already
23:11was we just wanted to be here more.
23:15Careful, guys.
23:16Careful.
23:24This boat crew has won a standing nap for performing well as a team on the O course.
23:29Even standing with eyes closed can be a welcome reward.
23:32Hang in a nice warm bed with fuzzy slippers on.
23:36Read a nice book.
23:39Teamwork remains essential,
23:41although physical evolutions are simpler for safety reasons.
23:44But simpler doesn't mean easier.
23:47Oh, please.
23:51Bud's is a process to identify the will to win in every situation.
23:56Leapfrogs.
23:57Everybody know how to do a leapfrog?
24:03Deep plant, hand plant.
24:04Let's go, Tony.
24:06There's three just up ahead.
24:07I think he's probably figuring it out.
24:10The band push him.
24:12You guys are actually chilling the race if you hurry up.
24:14Yep.
24:15Wake up!
24:18Got it?
24:19Yeah!
24:20Once you're waist-deep in water,
24:22turn south.
24:23Do not turn until you are waist-deep in water.
24:26Got it?
24:27Yeah!
24:28The students sense that the physical pace of Hell Week is diminishing.
24:33Instructors know that physical punishment no longer will have any effect on the class.
24:38Instructors right here facing me.
24:40Right here, right here.
24:42Facing me.
24:44Once you're leg full in, put your hand on top of your head.
24:46Although they have slowed the pace, the instructors do not relax their demands for attention to detail.
24:51Losing makes things harder.
24:53Is this attention?
24:54Is this attention?
24:55No.
24:56Why do you guys keep doing that?
24:57So I know that they're ready.
24:58That's fine, but they need to be at attention before you leave.
25:00Drop down.
25:01Drop down.
25:02Let's go, drop down.
25:03Drop down.
25:04Hands on top of your head.
25:05Ray!
25:06Ray!
25:07Down!
25:08They're not doing too bad as a whole.
25:10I mean, the other two boat crews just crushed them.
25:12And that's because they've been winning all the races.
25:14These guys have not had a break yet.
25:1644 seconds.
25:17Go!
25:18Go!
25:19Geary and his boat crew are suffering.
25:21Go!
25:22Go!
25:23Go!
25:24Go!
25:25Go!
25:26Go!
25:27Go!
25:28Go!
25:29Go!
25:30Go!
25:31Go!
25:32Go!
25:33Go!
25:34Go!
25:35Go!
25:36Go!
25:37Go!
25:38Go!
25:39Go!
25:40Go!
25:41Go!
25:42Geoff!
25:43ë°”ship!
25:44Go!
25:45So what could that do for the rest of the fellas?
25:46The name of the game is it's WTF out here.
25:4749 seconds.
25:48Yes, kid.
25:4935.
25:50Free Cover.
25:51Get in those tents and I want you to take a paddles, stole them in
25:53your boat, take your life takes in the tents with you.
25:56Put them underneath your feet, keep your feet elevated, keep your
25:57extremities on that cot and go to sleep.
26:00Let's go!
26:01Go!
26:0215 seconds.
26:03Go!
26:04Go!
26:05Go!
26:0613, 12, 11, 11, 11, emp.
26:07We're having up since Sunday morning at 6, so I don't know where to get a rest.
26:14The minute these guys are up, which is Sunday morning when they got up,
26:18until the time we first put them to bed, which is now,
26:22and we're looking at roughly up to 96 hours of total sleep deprivation.
26:27Anything more than that, and we're risking injury to the student.
26:37Get up, get up, get up a horse!
26:50Get up, get up, get up, get up we are walking, he is walking arms out of the beast!
26:58Get out, get up, get up, get up!
27:06After being still for an hour, all your muscles and joints are completely locked up.
27:13And then you've got to go lay in the surf.
27:15I was not a happy camper. I felt like crying half of the time when we got out of the tent.
27:36When we had to go run down in the ocean and sit in the cold water, that was horrible.
27:54After three days and nights of cold water, psychological torment and agonizing exercise, the class is numb to the misery.
28:03Everyone operates on instinct. One whistle hit the deck. Two whistles crawl.
28:18Three whistles stand up.
28:24Without realizing it, they have begun to ignore distractions and react to commands.
28:29You're getting closer.
28:32I'm looking at some stress-related injuries to his legs, to his ankles, and a little swelling on his knees, too.
28:39Come on, man. You only got about another ten more feet. Come on. Come on.
28:43Still hanging in there.
28:44Come on. It's sucking you in.
28:47Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on, babe.
28:52Start with the carbs.
28:54I want to see all those glasses empty in the next ten minutes.
28:59Around the dinner table, the students digest their situation.
29:04They're used to what Friday's gonna be like.
29:06Oh, my gosh.
29:07It's here, boys.
29:09Yeah, we're so close, guys.
29:10I can feel my eyes swollen up now.
29:12I woke up. Are they swollen now?
29:13Oh, yeah. Yeah, mine?
29:14Mine at all?
29:16I don't feel like it.
29:19Probably took a couple years off my life.
29:22You think?
29:23Yeah.
29:24The smoking's bad for you. I can't imagine what this does.
29:27Don't waste your time sleeping.
29:34Crispino, Ashok. At 5'10", you guys will be out there.
29:37Yeah.
29:38I knew it was gonna be bad when you woke up.
29:43Always is.
29:45Very, very cold.
29:47I saw Roseboro. He started crying.
29:49I said, no.
29:50It's not the best.
29:51The worst experience in my life I find.
29:53No.
29:54You know why?
29:55First thing I thought,
29:57oh, this is really gonna suck.
30:00And I seriously looked around at everybody else
30:02and everyone else was thinking the exact same thing.
30:04I'm like, you know what?
30:05I know this can't be for that long, so suck it up.
30:08Pete! Pete!
30:11I don't think you can describe to anybody
30:13what this is like.
30:15They have to be here
30:16and they have to experience it yourself.
30:18You'll never know.
30:20This is the kick of the nuts.
30:22Not like no other.
30:24I never thought there would only be 21 of us in here.
30:29They're about three and a half days into it.
30:31They've got about 36 hours left.
30:33They just finished eating at the galley.
30:34We brought them over here for what we call camp surf.
30:37These guys are gonna fill this pit in we've got behind them.
30:39Every other hell week, we usually alternate it,
30:41and they either dig a pit or fill it in.
30:43It takes a couple hours.
30:44The guys will be digging,
30:45and if they're not putting out hard enough,
30:47guys start slacking.
30:48We'll send them down and get them wet.
30:50Basically, right now, the guys are on autopilot,
30:52and the rest of the schedule is pretty much just to keep these guys moving.
30:56Who's your luckiest guy?
30:58Who's your luckiest man in the boat crew?
31:01Mr. Holley?
31:02Mr. Holley?
31:04All right, come around here.
31:05Don't step on my graves.
31:07We've got some departed members of Class 234 in these graves,
31:12so I don't want you stepping on them.
31:13All right, here's the deal.
31:15There's a paddle buried in one of these graves.
31:17All right?
31:18I want you to take your paddle,
31:20and I want you to jam it down and tie it into one of these graves
31:23nice and hard just like this.
31:24Okay?
31:25One of those three graves.
31:26If you guys hit the paddle,
31:28if you hit the grave that's got the paddle in it,
31:30you get to go stand by the fire.
31:32If you miss, guess where you're going?
31:36You're going to get wet, keep digging.
31:39So choose, but choose wisely.
31:42Don't say anything.
31:43It's your choice, Holley.
31:45Five, four, don't step in there.
31:51Stay back away from it.
31:53You can't run in there.
31:55That ain't it, is it?
32:00Get wet.
32:01Let's go.
32:02Let's go.
32:03Damn it.
32:04So close.
32:06You had a chance.
32:13Boat crew two, get over here.
32:18Nope.
32:19Damn it.
32:20Get wet.
32:21Get wet.
32:22Get wet.
32:23Keep digging.
32:24Get wet.
32:25He, he, he, he.
32:27Who's the luckiest guy out of this boat crew?
32:29Who's got the most luck?
32:30I am!
32:31Anybody here feeling lucky?
32:32You feeling lucky?
32:33You feeling lucky, punk?
32:34No.
32:35I'm feeling lucky.
32:36Carr, you feeling lucky?
32:37Hey, I'm a boat with you.
32:38I'll take a stab.
32:39All right, Mr. Legg.
32:40All right, come over here and stand right here.
32:42Okay.
32:43Right where my paddle is.
32:44Don't touch those graves.
32:45One.
32:46Two.
32:47Two.
32:48Point.
32:49Everybody point.
32:50Point.
32:51Point to which one you like.
32:52Go, let's go together.
32:53Point to which one you like.
32:54Middle.
32:55Middle.
32:56Middle.
32:57Middle.
32:58Middle.
32:59Don't step on it.
33:00Hey!
33:01Get over by the fire.
33:04What?
33:05Got.
33:06Been a little wet, a little cold.
33:09Actually, a lot of cold, but oh well.
33:14Kind of expected that.
33:16Now I think we're actually in the tunnel and we know where the end is, but we really haven't
33:21gotten to the point where we can see the light out on the other side.
33:25We know we're getting to the light.
33:27It's just, it's going to hurt getting there.
33:30You win.
33:31Oh, just a little game playing with him.
33:32Rock, paper, scissors.
33:33If he won, they kept digging.
33:34If I won, they all got wet.
33:35Mr. Gary!
33:36Right here.
33:37All right, Mr. Gary.
33:38Give me a paddle.
33:39Okay, you and I are going to rock, paper, scissors.
33:40All right?
33:41One time.
33:42Okay?
33:43If I win, your glass gets wet.
33:45If you win, you guys keep digging.
33:46We're going to do, we're going to go one, two, three and then put it out.
33:50On three or after three?
33:51On three.
33:52On three.
33:53On three.
33:54All right?
33:55At Camp Surf, the instructors are concerned about losing students to the ground.
33:57They're going to throw them down and throw them down.
33:58They're going to throw them down.
33:59But, they're going to throw them down.
34:00They're going to throw them down right there.
34:01All right, Mr. Gary, give me a paddle.
34:02Okay, you and I are going to rock, paper, scissors.
34:03All right?
34:04One time.
34:05Okay?
34:06If I win, your glass gets wet.
34:07If you win, you guys keep digging.
34:08We're going to do.
34:09We're going to go one, two, three, and then put it out.
34:10At Camp Surf, the instructors are concerned about losing students to physical injuries.
34:17Playing games teaches the class to make decisions and accept the consequences.
34:23Accept it or resist it, Hell Week is the ultimate mind game.
34:35Seems like menial tasks, but when you take the little things that you do, you put it on a larger scale.
34:40Whether it's dealing with demolition, dealing with the firing range, doing something like that, attention to detail, being aware of your surroundings.
34:50Yeah, I can definitely see where we're like, especially under these conditions.
34:57The 21 students of class 234 are allowed two hours sleep under their boats.
35:03Hell Week helps reveal those men who have the determination to overcome any obstacle and withstand adversity.
35:10There is a feeling in the teams for those who belong and those who don't.
35:14A man's peers must trust his commitment to the group.
35:27Get up! Wake up! Get up! Get out of there! Let's go!
35:33Let's go!
35:34Seals do not tolerate failure in themselves or others.
35:3983 students started training in first phase.
35:42Hurry up!
35:4215 days of training have reduced that number to 21.
35:45Get down there!
35:46Training to become a SEAL might be the purest of survival ideals.
35:50Let's go!
35:51There are no commercial endorsements.
35:53Hurry up!
35:54There is only the satisfaction of accomplishing a goal and the dream of going to war.
35:58Get down to that surf zone. Let's go! It's calling you, ladies!
36:00Hurry up, gotta start the day off right. Gotta go take a bath.
36:04Gotta go take a bath, hurry up, get down there.
36:08Hurry up!
36:10The students lay in the surf without making a sound.
36:14Only their shaking from the cold reveals their condition.
36:17By now, surf torture is merely another obstacle.
36:20Nothing more, nothing less.
36:22Their dependence on each other and their trust in their instructors
36:25is enough to keep the class going.
36:28For class 234, the long day is almost over.
36:32Two minutes to get your boats and your paddles.
36:36If you don't make it in two minutes,
36:38you're gonna come back down here and lay in the water.
36:41Go!
36:43Somebody says, why hell weed? Why not hell three days?
36:47Why not seven days? Why five days?
36:49When you get to this point, nobody's gonna quit.
36:53They'll stay here and they'll die if we let them.
36:56Go!
36:58There's a lot right here.
37:00There's my line.
37:02There we go.
37:03We're gonna run the handle.
37:04I'm gonna throw it over.
37:05Two people, waiting for those handles,
37:07as soon as it floats over the second time.
37:09Get in, hurry!
37:10Go, go, go in.
37:11Go, go, go, go in.
37:13Go, go, go, go, go, go, go ahead.
37:15The short one, that's a loser race.
37:22Hell, who'd you race, yourselves?
37:25Get down, get down.
37:31Now that it's Thursday, it's basically a safety factor.
37:38We don't want to put too much stress on him now and chance hurting him, so we're just
37:43kind of doing things to keep him preoccupied and keep him awake for the next 24 hours.
37:47They took a beating this week and numbers have dwindled, but overall they're doing very well.
37:51You know, we credit that to most of the staff taking care of him.
37:55Oh yeah! Oh yeah, man!
38:0264.
38:04No, 57 is cold.
38:0864 is surfable.
38:13It just feels like you're, it's a euphoric.
38:20Yeah.
38:21Without sleep for five days, it's just, it's a lot more time for things to register.
38:26All in bad shape, just happy to be here before you get through this course.
38:31Love all these guys, they're a bunch of animals.
38:34We're getting asked for better crew, what are you talking about?
38:38We've got the best crew there's ever been.
38:40The best Smurf boat there's ever been by far.
38:43To the traditionally genetically deficient Smurfs, and here's to the new genetically superior Smurfs.
38:49Yeah!
38:50Yeah!
38:51Yeah!
38:52Every paddle, spoken out there.
38:54Well it's day five Friday right now.
38:56Well, the show's never over.
39:02Surviving in war is the basic instinct of every soldier.
39:05Hurry up! Get down! Get down!
39:07Hurry up!
39:08Hurry up!
39:09Hurry up!
39:11Men can die from panic, indecision, or carelessness.
39:16At critical moments they must overcome conditions and misery they never imagined.
39:29Every step of Hell Week is tried and tested by the SEALs who teach it.
39:33The teamwork required in a platoon demands it.
39:36To endure such Hell and continue to perform the mission is the commitment each SEAL expects from himself and his teammates.
39:44Hold your feet! Hold your feet, Mr. Getty! You can do it! You can do it, Mr. Getty! Go, Mr. Getty! Go!
39:57Here's the deal. Ashlott, I'm going to put you on the counter.
40:00If you can hang on for 30 seconds, we'll continue on with the next evolution.
40:05Don't tell me where you go.
40:1915 seconds shy. Falling on your boat. Let's go.
40:22Here's how Buds goes. You guys are on your fifth day of Hell Week, right? See this group running right here? They're on the last Lego 14 mile run.
40:38Buds doesn't end right here. It continues on.
40:44Yeah. What's up?
40:50Hey, what's up?
40:52You got a paddle for me? Yes, sir.
40:54The class is told to rig for surf passage. While the addition of the captain of Buds to the Smurf crew is unusual, the class knows only that they must keep moving and continue to perform.
41:08Good. Good. Good girl.
41:10Good. Good girl.
41:12Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. Good girl. 41:42week is over. As they receive congratulations from instructors, the students have accomplished
41:51an important goal on their road to becoming warriors. Now they will continue training
41:57wearing the brown t-shirts that symbolize their passing hell week. The instructors too
42:02are satisfied. They have shaped a nucleus for future SEAL teams and passed on the warrior
42:08tradition. But when this day is done, Bud's training will continue for another 24 weeks.
42:15The class will be medically examined twice during the next 24 hours. Roberts and Ashlock
42:20each finish hell week despite broken legs. They will be medically rolled out, leaving
42:25class 234 with 19 students to carry on. No one in class 234 can predict what lies ahead
42:33in the coming days and months. But on this winter day, the future can wait.
42:38Decommission it, you understand. For 21 young Bud students, the long day is finally over.
42:44Do it all!
42:46Right on. Hey, good job.
42:48Get on!
