00:00In war, there are no time-outs, no contrived popularity contests to decide life and death.
00:17This program is about the 83 young men of Class 234 and their six months long struggle to become U.S. Navy SEALs
00:26in a training course called Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL Training, or BUDS.
00:32BUDS is far more than another reality television survivor contest.
00:38There is only one rule to remember, it pays to be a winner.
00:56In the first minutes of day one at BUDS training in Coronado, California, Class 234 is falling apart.
01:14Trying to obey impatient SEAL instructors, Class 234 is completely disoriented in the pre-dawn cold of late November.
01:30In the darkness, there isn't time for the instructors or the television cameras to learn 83 names.
01:36It won't matter.
01:38BUDS has a failure rate of over 70%.
01:44Of the 83 students pictured here, only 16 will graduate six months from now.
01:56Every student harbors an inner belief that he can become a Navy SEAL.
02:00But when seconds seem like hours, enduring the moment can challenge anyone's commitment.
02:07Oh, that was a saggy bat.
02:09You're on seven.
02:11You started out with 10 and you've knocked out 20 so far, because you're sad.
02:16You're weak.
02:18Here's eight.
02:20Nine.
02:22Ten.
02:23Ten.
02:24I'll tell you what.
02:25One.
02:26Two.
02:27When you're told to do something, you do it right.
02:28Yeah.
02:29If you're doing a set of push-ups, you do them right.
02:30Yeah.
02:31If you want to screw off, I'll catch you every time and I'll make you pay.
02:34Yeah.
02:35I'm going to sleep over here.
02:36You will pay.
02:37Yeah.
02:39And that goes for when I turn my back and I walk away.
02:43Yeah.
02:44Because that's when I look at you the most.
02:46It's one way to get somebody fired up to get them moving is just give them extra pressure and say,
02:50you know what, every evolution I'm going to be watching you and paying attention and making sure
02:54that you're doing the same thing that all of your buddies are doing.
02:59Do it again.
03:01You guys get out of here.
03:02Making a guy realize that he has to, he has to put out equally with his buddies.
03:11Basis of teamwork is being able to have a little bit of self-motivation, be able to carry your own weight.
03:16What number are you on, Chaney? You're on three.
03:21I didn't say four.
03:22Don't you wish you were moving a little faster?
03:24Day one is a wake up.
03:25It's welcome to buds.
03:26They kind of get introduced to all the instructors.
03:30Intensity level as far as being right in their face for everything, every minute, every second they're out here is definitely at a higher level.
03:38Take your mouth, James.
03:39Don't give in to the pain.
03:41You just adjust for it.
03:42That's it.
03:44Minor adjustments.
03:45If you can't do it perfect, then you just change it a little bit.
03:49Don't give in to the pain and quit.
03:52This entire PT has been a joke.
03:55There hasn't been a single evolution that you have performed during the course of this PT
03:59that has even remotely resembled perfection.
04:02Everything has been sad, weak, and unreadable.
04:07And it's all because you're inside your tiny little brains, self-defeating yourself.
04:12Think I'm good looking?
04:14Go!
04:17Should have done it the first time, dumbass.
04:19What are you doing?
04:20Where are you going?
04:22After an hour, instructors show no sign of letting up.
04:27Their intention is for each student to question his reason for being here.
04:31Hey, what is wrong with you?
04:34Nothing's wrong with you.
04:35The instructors realize nobody will drop out in the first hour.
04:39The quitting will begin as soon as the realization sets in that this is only the beginning.
04:44Thumbs up on that bar, do you want pull-up?
04:47Thumbs up on top.
04:48Yeah, you're looking for him to put out, that's all.
04:50Just give us everything you got, and that's fine.
04:53And you can tell if they're not giving you everything they got, you can tell.
04:56You see that guy who's not doing all his push-ups.
05:00He's falling down on his knees, and then you tell him to bear crawl around,
05:03and all of a sudden he's got all this energy.
05:06Pull up, pull it up!
05:07Get up there!
05:10Keep pulling, keep pulling, keep pulling, keep pulling, keep pulling!
05:15Keep going, keep going!
05:17Look at all that extra strength you had!
05:21Class 234 is no different from any other Buds class before it.
05:25For the most part, students range in age from 17 to 29 years old.
05:30Everyone is a volunteer.
05:31Get on the bar there, Buders.
05:33You should be all rested up by now.
05:34Maybe you can get one.
05:36Each student has his own reasons for being at Buds.
05:39All right, there's one.
05:41I came here to Buds to be part of the best team around.
05:45I like to have my buddies that I can depend on, and I would like for them to be able to depend on me.
05:49Nothing's promised here.
05:51You can only try your best.
05:54I just want to be one of the best of the best.
05:56I just want to see if I can measure up to one of the toughest things out there.
06:02As Dawn breaks over the exercise area, nicknamed the Grinder, the instructors see each student clearly for the first time.
06:08Excuse me, Mr. Hawley.
06:10Get it up!
06:11Get out of here!
06:13Get up there!
06:14What's up with these officers?
06:15Get up there!
06:16Shoemaker and Hawley are officers who are drawing attention from instructors who demand that SEAL officers lead by example.
06:23That's what they need.
06:24That's what they're asking for.
06:25This mile, Hawley, go get wet.
06:27Go get the surf zone.
06:29You don't even want to put out.
06:33We've got eight weeks to work with them, and you can scream and holler.
06:37Get up, Brown!
06:39I'm hoarse already, and it's not going to work.
06:42You've got to let the time take care of it.
06:45And usually the same names will show up.
06:48Hey, stud boy!
06:50Who's a stud?
06:51Crider!
06:52Get up there!
06:53You better be a heck of a runner, Crider, because you're on a blouse with this.
06:58Come on!
07:02Nice work!
07:03If the same names keep showing up and all the instructor staff feel that, you know, this guy's not going to cut it, then he's going to get a little extra pressure.
07:11It's been a whole minute since your name's been yelled out, too, there, Shoemaker.
07:15Up!
07:16Down!
07:17Up!
07:18Two!
07:19Down!
07:20Up!
07:21Three!
07:22Oh, come on, Shoemaker.
07:23Get on up there.
07:24Lock it out.
07:25Lock it out there, stud boy.
07:26Lock it out.
07:27Get on up there.
07:28Who's that guy up front there?
07:29Hoffman!
07:30Hoffman!
07:31Get up!
07:32Get up, man!
07:33Get up, sir!
07:34She's supposed to be, by example.
07:35Shoemaker.
07:36Oh, you remain there, Shoemaker.
07:37Get on up there, stud boy.
07:38Despite Shoemaker and Holly's obvious distress, Bud's is not about humiliation.
07:42Whatever you have to do, kick, scream, bite, I don't care if you have to chew on that thing.
07:44Get up there!
07:45Get up there!
07:46Get up there!
07:47You're starting to realize the kind of effort you have to give here.
07:49Thing is, it's not cutting it for you right now.
07:50.
07:51.
07:52.
07:53.
07:54.
07:55.
07:56.
07:57.
07:58.
07:59.
08:00.
08:01.
08:02.
08:03.
08:04.
08:05.
08:06.
08:07.
08:08.
08:09.
08:10.
08:11.
08:12.
08:13.
08:14.
08:15.
08:16.
08:17.
08:18.
08:19.
08:20.
08:214
08:40.
08:41If you want to narrow it down, it has to be the best shot there is.
08:46Eight, nine, ten, eleven.
08:52After breakfast, a class muster reveals that one student is gone.
08:57Less than three hours into day one and 234 suffers its first drop-on request, or DOR.
09:03The word spreads quickly, but there is no time for questions or reaction.
09:06Hey, what up, Butters?
09:08When Geddes learns that a student has dropped out, he has no time to worry about it.
09:13We're moving!
09:15We're moving!
09:17With the different ages and maturity levels in the class, it's going to be a long day,
09:23and 234 must remain focused on the next evolution, the timed four-mile run.
09:29Hey, listen up, we got this run going on now.
09:32After the run, people will pass, probably stretch out.
09:35Those people who fail will probably get beat for a while.
09:43And 60% of the people that fail this run today will not make it through Hell Week.
09:48Hell Week. Five and a half days of misery.
09:51The instructors tell the students again that failure for most is a statistical destiny.
09:56Go!
09:57Any student unable to complete the four-mile run in 32 minutes or less before Hell Week begins,
10:06two weeks hence, will be performance dropped from training.
10:11For half the class, this is their first time at BUDS.
10:14For the rest, it is their second, third, and even fourth try.
10:19For Rivera, the class LPO, or leading petty officer, at 29 years of age, this will be his third and final try to graduate.
10:28I was actually in BUDS in 1995.
10:31I quit.
10:32Mentally, I just wasn't ready.
10:34I was in the last class, and I got rolled back in Hell Week.
10:37I feel out of everything that I've done in the Navy, this is what I want the most.
10:41I'm thinking I'm going to make it this time.
10:43Examiner, 32-48.
10:46Nobody passed today.
10:49And they have some fast runners that will pass with no problem on a good beach.
10:55Go!
10:56And we know that.
10:57But today, it's day one.
10:59Casey, 32-52.
11:01It's hello, this is BUDS, and we're not here to mollycoddle anybody.
11:06Did I tell you to go drop down?
11:08What did I just tell you?
11:10You come in, you give me your name, you check in with your time, and then I'll tell you to go.
11:15Yeah.
11:16You don't start making up your own rules around here, Casey.
11:19Three, four, five.
11:2135-53.
11:22Surf zone.
11:23Go get wet.
11:24Run!
11:25We want these guys to dig down, give us everything they've got.
11:28The time isn't so important to us.
11:30The time isn't what it's about.
11:32What it's about is to see the guys are digging down and giving us everything they've got
11:36and showing us that they have the intestinal fortitude to punch through.
11:39Looks like the only thing out of this timed run that you're going to end up benefiting from
11:43is the fact that now you know what it means to be wet and sandy.
11:46If I ever tell you to get wet and sandy again, or anybody in the instructor staff does, you
11:50get wet and sandy from head to toe.
11:52Just like you are now.
11:53You're completely covered.
11:54A lot of people don't understand what sandy is because they don't pay attention to detail.
11:59They don't discipline themselves to get fully sandy.
12:04You do know that now, right?
12:05I bet you too.
12:06You know it now because you failed the run and we got you sandy.
12:09So you still end up benefiting in one little way.
12:12One, two, three, four.
12:14One, two, three, four.
12:17You're supposed to be the strong one.
12:19The people, one that people look up to.
12:21I wouldn't even want to be under your leadership in a real team in the unlikely event you make it.
12:25Because you're a weakness, you could get yourself and teammates killed in a real-life situation.
12:30You better figure out if you want to be here or not.
12:32You've got a long way to go.
12:34Geddes is singled out for being physically unprepared when he reported to training.
12:39As the OIC, he is an obvious choice for close-up scrutiny from SEAL instructors.
12:45Although SEAL training is the same for both officers and enlisted men,
12:49Bud's instructors are experienced SEAL operators who hold their officers to a higher standard.
12:55Pressure is just always there for me.
12:57I mean, I'm always feeling some kind of pressure, especially as the OIC.
13:00I want you to take a look.
13:02You've got your chest here.
13:03I've got under your neck.
13:04I see your arm here.
13:05You got told to get sandy.
13:06Yeah.
13:07That means from head to toe.
13:08You've got an answer as well, right?
13:09Yeah.
13:10Okay.
13:11Pay attention to detail.
13:12You've got to discipline yourself to do that.
13:14You've got to do that so the guys are going to follow you.
13:16If you get given an order, it means do it properly the first time.
13:19Get sandy.
13:20Yeah.
13:21I guess the hardest thing to do is constantly stay motivated so you can complete every evolution
13:27and make sure you do it and just keep going every day.
13:30Geddes will get continuous pressure until he proves he is fit to lead.
13:34It is a challenge that he must win or risk losing control of class 234 and being dropped from training.
13:41You're an officer.
13:42Make sure that you're leading from the front.
13:45You're setting the example, all right?
13:47Yeah.
13:48There's a lot of guys out here who are E1s and E2s that are going to follow your lead.
13:51Yeah.
13:52So I'm going to hold you to a higher standard.
13:53Get out of here.
13:55Hurry up!
13:56After the run, class 234 prepares for C.
13:59Hey, knuckleheads, why don't you guys move down?
14:01The instructors hope that surf passage will cause more students to question their commitment to training and drop out.
14:11Right now it's a little small.
14:12We saw some bigger waves earlier this morning.
14:14You never know, though.
14:15It can pick up at any minute.
14:16Surf passage consists of boat crews racing each other through the surf in their ten-foot rubber rafts.
14:22Most of the class have never seen waves this big.
14:25Hey, fellas, come on now.
14:26This is the fun part of the thing.
14:27Yeah, baby.
14:28Oh, I'm fired up!
14:31It's going to be fun.
14:32All right, stroke, stroke.
14:34I tell you what, go faster, dig deep, and just say stroke every time, and we'll get out there.
14:39In Boat Crew 11, Fox, an enlisted man, is instructing the boat crew.
14:44Instructors are not pleased.
14:46Shoemaker, the boat crew leader, is not showing leadership.
14:49Wait for C!
14:50After his poor showing earlier in PT and the four-mile run,
14:55Shoemaker is bringing unwanted attention on himself and his boat crew.
14:59You're going to see life jackets scattered.
15:06Paddling rafts in high surf is more difficult and dangerous than it might appear.
15:11Men can be smashed together in the boiling water, get hit by flying paddles, or become tangled up underneath the raft.
15:18In Surf This Be, the emphasis is on swim buddies sticking together and boat crews working together.
15:24But the pressure to win the race is never-ending.
15:27And the instructors are watching and waiting for any signs of weak effort.
15:31One man left.
15:33There's no one!
15:34There's the truth!
15:35Yeah!
15:36You've got to put out.
15:37You can't be afraid.
15:38Even when it's big.
15:39When it's time to go, you've got to go.
15:40And when it's time to sit back, you've got to sit back.
15:45And when it's time to sit back, you've got to sit back.
15:55Go around him!
15:56It's a thrill!
15:57Damn it!
15:59Get the boat extended arm!
16:01Now!
16:02Let's do it again, fellas!
16:03Same race!
16:04Boat crew eight has won an earlier race and been allowed to rest before returning to the surf.
16:09Yeah!
16:10Hey!
16:11Be a winner, Mr. Wake!
16:12Meanwhile, Holly and boat crew three receive a motivational time-out for their poor performance.
16:19Holly is learning.
16:20It pays to be a winner.
16:22The first morning is, you just pretty much expect the worst.
16:26And it was pretty bad.
16:27They hammered us pretty good.
16:29I wasn't as prepared as I should have been coming in.
16:33Everybody but Demeter recovered.
16:35Boat crew is waiting to participate in a race.
16:38And you're holding them up right now.
16:41Instructors never forget a name.
16:43And neither will the class if the failure of an individual brings unwanted attention to the group.
16:48One of the ironies of Bud's is that a student can excel in one event but fail in another.
16:54Demeter, the fastest runner in the morning run, is now singled out for his physical weakness.
17:00Hurry up, Demeter!
17:01Your boat crew is waiting on you!
17:03Nice.
17:04You guys ain't a heck of a while more aggressive than you already are.
17:07Look at all!
17:08Hurry up, Demeter!
17:09Prepare low carry!
17:10Low carry!
17:11Want him?
17:12Coxon, report!
17:13Go report!
17:14You want to be here?
17:15I don't think so.
17:16You want to be here?
17:17You know what?
17:18I don't think so.
17:19Your weakness can jeopardize your entire boat crew and get them killed in a hot situation.
17:32You better start putting out.
17:34They're kind of starting to pull it together.
17:36It's much better than they were this morning.
17:38They were soup sandwiches this morning.
17:49Surf passage is not simply an exercise for the students to get pounded on by the waves.
17:54It reinforces a bigger lesson, the main lesson of first phase.
17:59Individuals cannot survive in wartime.
18:02Class 234 must develop a trust in teamwork.
18:05No matter how high the surf is, no matter how cold and wet they become,
18:10trust in one another is the essential SEAL trait for survival.
18:14At BUDS or in war.
18:16You guys ready to put out now?
18:18Go!
18:20Same race.
18:21Go!
18:31It's just a determination.
18:32They've got to have their minds and hearts in it.
18:34If they don't have that, then they don't have anything.
18:41This big bomb is out there.
18:43He's bigger.
18:44Yeah.
18:45Oh, here we go.
18:46You got it!
18:47Put it in there!
18:48You got it!
18:49Yes!
18:53There it is!
18:54Oh, yeah!
18:55They quit battling.
18:56You got seven hands out there?
18:57Yeah.
18:58When these waves come down on them, it pretty much, it'll flip the boat over and it'll turn
19:13them into a roll and some sugar.
19:15But then the calmer it gets, it's just no fun.
19:17And then we do foot races and whatnot.
19:19If your back's not straight, your butt is in the air.
19:23Nolan!
19:24Butt in the air.
19:26There you go.
19:27How tough was that?
19:29That's the rest position.
19:33It's only gonna get worse, Nolan.
19:34It's only gonna get worse.
19:36Hey, there's other programs out there, Nolan.
19:38Rangers, SBU, something else, Nolan.
19:40Every single day you're planting that seed.
19:43You're bringing them a situation where they have to struggle to overcome some kind of obstacle.
19:48But most of it's mental.
19:49They overcome it and they go on if they don't, you know.
19:52Why are you wearing those bars?
19:54To lead.
19:55You realize that if you make it to a team, that you might be in charge of me.
20:00Oh, yeah.
20:01You think you can take command and charge over me?
20:06Not ready yet.
20:08Not ready yet.
20:09Eight.
20:10It's obvious.
20:12No one is immune to pain, but getting seriously injured is the one thing every student fears the most.
20:18If the injury is severe enough, the student will be dropped or rolled back, and he must start all over again.
20:25We made it all the way out.
20:27But then on the way back in, this wave went right behind us and it made the boat and went up like that.
20:32And my leg went in between the main tube and the cross tube.
20:35And when the boat went, it just kind of rolled back with it.
20:39It was all real quick.
20:40You always have to have your paddles in the water if the waves are about to break on you or if you're in the wash.
20:45If your paddles is not in the water, you're just really screwed.
20:48You guys here?
20:49Yes.
20:50Yep.
20:51Right here?
20:52Right there.
20:53Try to stand up and walk on it.
20:54Try to walk on it.
20:55Okay.
20:56Go ahead and put your boot, your sock and everything back on.
20:57Yep.
20:58You know, after you get like the boot back in it, you'll take some motric, you know, and then I'll be able to do it.
21:10Hopefully it won't affect me that much.
21:13Okay.
21:14I'm going to get back to the class.
21:19After hundreds of push-ups, a four-mile timed run, and paddling in 12-foot waves in 56-degree water, two students are gone and one is slightly injured.
21:29There are five months, three weeks, four days, and five and a half hours left until class 234 graduates.
21:36A little reality check.
21:45Waiting for inspection can give a student too much time to think.
21:49Buds is not a sport.
21:51Room inspection is intended to teach class 234 a major lesson.
21:55Pay now or pay later.
21:58How do you say that?
22:00Gumbaya.
22:01Gumbayayan.
22:02Where are you from, Gumbayan?
22:05The class comes from all walks of life.
22:08Sailors from the fleet, high school graduates, and college students.
22:13Most were in the Navy before they arrived here.
22:16But despite the differences in age, life experience, and personalities, they all have two things in common.
22:23First, every man is a volunteer.
22:26Second, they all know 70% of them will never graduate.
22:30Oh, Chaney, your name was popping up all over the place today.
22:35Hey, what's up with that?
22:38Are you trying out for most improved player there, Chaney?
22:42No, I'm not an instructor.
22:43Start off really, really bad, and then just slowly improve and get the most improved award?
22:48No, I'm not an instructor pass, no.
22:49You better shape up sort of quick.
22:52Your boots sort of stink there, Crispino.
22:54And your boots stink.
22:55You too can drop down.
22:56There's a direct correlation between Jack London and your name.
22:59If you can name it, I won't drop you down.
23:01Give me a good pair of boots.
23:03Where is a good pair of boots?
23:05Where is a good pair of boots?
23:10Goombayina, come over here.
23:13Down, seven, down, eight, down, nine, down, twenty.
23:18Alright, step over here, right here.
23:20Ooh, see, now those boots are decent.
23:22For first inspection, those are decent.
23:24And yours, I don't even think you shine your boots at all.
23:27Drop on down, pair on.
23:30Drop.
23:33Attention to detail can never be taken for granted.
23:36The difference between living and dying often depends on how a SEAL platoon prepares
23:41before a battle is ever fought.
23:43A SEAL must anticipate problems and solve them before those problems kill him or his teammates.
23:49Merely showing up and paying attention is not enough.
23:53Alright, let's start over here.
23:55We were here on Sunday from nine in the morning till nine at night.
23:59We were here for about twelve and a half hours on Sunday.
24:02I'd say about four or five hours spent cleaning this room.
24:06And then another couple hours spent cleaning their office over at the compound.
24:11I'll help you get the sand out of your doors.
24:13I got one.
24:14Whoo!
24:15Gaines, I can tell that you tried.
24:18This is my first time.
24:20It's taken me a while to get over here.
24:23This is my first time.
24:24So is it what you expected?
24:26Yeah, it is now.
24:28Indoc wasn't, but it is now.
24:31This is it.
24:33I know what I'm here for.
24:35I expected a lot of work.
24:37This is more like the fifth or sixth time.
24:40I got rolled before when I was here.
24:42I got a concussion during surf passage.
24:44Got rolled.
24:45I got pneumonia in Hell Week with one class.
24:48Made it through.
24:49Tore my hamstring with another class and got rolled.
24:52It's the challenge for myself.
24:53I mean, you give something 110%.
24:55I mean, everybody here has been good at pretty much everything they've ever tried to do.
24:59So they come here, and they get challenged.
25:03And when you don't meet the standard, some guys come back to show they can meet the standard,
25:08and some guys don't.
25:09They accept it.
25:10I mean, my whole career is based on this right here.
25:13I mean, three years is pretty much the time I have invested in here right now.
25:16Drop down.
25:17Jesus.
25:18Push them out until my arms get tired.
25:19We've even got our names on our shirts, and you still can't get them right.
25:24Morgan, push them out until my arms get tired.
25:25It's the hardest training you can get into.
25:27It's a test of one's limits.
25:29See how far he can go, how far he can push himself.
25:32It's your ultimate resolve.
25:34If you're not quite sure, I don't even look like Instructor Rector.
25:37I'm much better looking.
25:39All right?
25:40If you're not quite sure, there's a name tag right there, my man.
25:43You know, that's like the push on the door, when it says push, and you walk up to it and pull it.
25:48There was a bell by my bed in the morning.
25:50I wouldn't be here now.
25:52Every morning I wake up.
25:54I just want to go back to sleep.
25:56You've got to get up at 3 o'clock just to get in here by 4, so you can be over there 15 minutes before any of the instructor staff gets over there.
26:03And then you get out of here late at night, get home, see the family for like an hour and a half, and then it's off to bed.
26:09Let's go over the river and through the woods to Grandma's house for Thanksgiving.
26:12Maybe the fairy will show up and clean my room.
26:15Is this a hit?
26:17If you have more perfume than a woman, if you have more cologne than a woman...
26:22I think that's a hit.
26:24Hey, somebody break out the list.
26:26I think that's a hit.
26:27If we have a room that's outstanding and the deck is good and it's a good room, it's a good room.
26:32They're going to pass.
26:33This isn't a rigged evolution.
26:35What are you up to?
26:36Three hits.
26:37What are they?
26:39Dusty mirrors, dirt on the windows in the bathroom, dirty deck.
26:44Woo!
26:45I might let that go, I might let that go.
26:49Dirty toe, dirty toe!
26:51What's this goo on your knife, Chayra?
26:53How's it sharpening up?
26:55Lock your room up, lock your valuables up.
26:59Lock your valuables up.
27:00Do not change out.
27:02Check in the senior chief on the grinder.
27:04Well, push him out.
27:05The first three weeks of first phase are known as the gut check, culminating in the third week called Hell Week, the ultimate test for a student's endurance.
27:14But Hell Week is not the concern at the moment.
27:18Passing room inspection is.
27:20What's up to you guys?
27:21Survival at Bud's is taken one minute, one hour, one evolution at a time.
27:26Oh, Evans!
27:28Most people think, you know, all they think of Bud's is Hell Week.
27:32We have to go through a Hell Week?
27:35I don't know about that.
27:36I think it's just a bad rumor.
27:38I don't know if I can say this, but how do you prepare for a kick in the balls, you know?
27:41Um, you don't.
27:43You just suck it up.
27:44Two minutes line, two minutes standing by for inspection.
27:46Two minutes?
27:47Yeah.
27:48You know, you gotta wanna be here, and Hell Week is definitely, uh, proof that you wanna be here.
27:52How many hits we got, bro?
27:53Two.
27:54Two?
27:55You guys might just make it.
28:02Oh, never mind.
28:03Nasty window, you guys are done.
28:05I think everybody flunks to inspection.
28:08I think those are the guys that have just been inspected so far.
28:11What is all this?
28:12Sand all over cabinet.
28:14Sand all over everything.
28:16Anticipation.
28:17It's worse than the actual event.
28:19It's gonna happen.
28:20Oh, you guys look off base, do you not?
28:22We do.
28:23Kind of figured as much.
28:24That's why this place is so clean.
28:25They don't live here.
28:26If you're married or if you have a place out in town already, you have to keep your room
28:31here, but you're allowed to go home at the end of the night.
28:33So I use the opportunity to see my wife and my daughter for a few hours.
28:36You guys fail.
28:37Keep it in the shower.
28:38Roll it up.
28:39Lock it up.
28:40Go to the chain.
28:41Back straight.
28:42Get off your gut.
28:48For those who fail room inspection, the reward is pain.
28:58The message is excruciating and non-negotiable.
29:01Put out or get out.
29:10It's pretty normal what we see first inspection.
29:14They were completely wrecked and they weren't completely good, but they were enough to warrant
29:20failures.
29:23For the five days they had off, they should have been immaculate.
29:27The pain of Bud's is not personal.
29:30It's up to each student to prove he wants to be here.
29:35I see sway backs.
29:36I see heads hanging.
29:49Well, I think we have a winner.
29:52This is the group that passed the room inspection.
29:55Guys like this might have failed the personnel inspection,
29:57but at least he passed the room inspection.
29:59I see sway backs.
30:01I see heads hanging.
30:03I'm going to take this as a conceding defeat.
30:05If you're told to do something, you've got a time limit to do it,
30:08you'll focus all of your energy and power on getting that task done.
30:12If you're told to do a muster,
30:15you move 100 miles an hour,
30:17find your boat crew leader,
30:19and you get a muster.
30:21It better be fast.
30:23If you're told to go hit the surf,
30:25you will sprint to the surf.
30:27You'll get completely wet and you'll get back sprinting.
30:30And believe me, if you get caught not sprinting,
30:33if you get caught screwing off,
30:35we'll find you and we will make you pay.
30:38This is just regular training.
30:40Start making you pay, that's extra.
30:44Maybe that's during lunch.
30:45Maybe you get an MRE.
30:47Get your ass handed to you during lunch.
30:49Maybe we'll have you come in a little bit early.
30:51Knock out some eight counts.
30:53You don't want to be one of those people, gents.
30:55Recover, get a muster.
30:57Sundays should be spent cleaning their room.
30:59And they know they've got inspection and they can see the schedule.
31:02So now they know I'm going to look under the bed for dust
31:05and Aaron's going to look on top of the dresser for dust.
31:08Next inspection they should, you know, have a big improvement.
31:1283 assigned, 81 present.
31:14Who's missing?
31:15Two people quite earlier.
31:16Who?
31:17Rock me and butters.
31:18That's how you give your musters.
31:19You have 83 assigned, 81 present.
31:22And then you start naming off who's missing and where the hell they are.
31:25Who are.
31:26From now on.
31:27After nine hours of push-ups, surf passage, running and more push-ups,
31:35the only thought in every student's mind is to make it through the final two hours of day one.
31:40What the hell are you guys doing?
31:41Hit it up.
31:43Hit it up.
31:45You guys better stay with the count.
31:48I'm not going to wait on you.
31:50If you fall behind, you're screwed.
31:52Stress and exhaustion can destroy self-confidence.
31:56Student leg uses pain to maintain his motivation.
31:59I don't see myself not liking it any more than I do now.
32:03And I'm having a blast with it now.
32:05It's tough, but it's still fun.
32:07So, as long as it stays tough and fun, I'll stay with it.
32:10Get those legs up.
32:12Get the touch of your head.
32:13It's old men for you.
32:14Old men is a beautiful thing.
32:16Come on.
32:18Hurry up.
32:19Hurry up.
32:20The only thing worse than lifting the regular 150-pound telephone poles is lifting old misery.
32:26Misery is a 450-pound reminder that teamwork is the only solution for success.
32:32Shoulder position.
32:33Move.
32:34Up.
32:35It's said that old misery loves company, but nobody loves misery.
32:40The problem is not everybody's putting out.
32:42So that means we've got to work on some teamwork.
32:45That means we've got to work on some strength.
32:48So, why don't we start all over again.
32:50Right hand, starting position.
32:51Move.
32:52I've never been under Ole Miss.
32:56When I went through training, I never got to...
32:58Never went to Ole Miss.
33:00Thank God.
33:03One.
33:04Two.
33:05Two.
33:06Instructor Pat Stone is probing each student's commitment to the boat crew's leader and to each other.
33:11Two.
33:12The only way off old misery is to work together as a crew.
33:15One.
33:16Get it up there.
33:17One.
33:18Okay.
33:19Right hand, shoulder position.
33:20Move.
33:21Nice.
33:22Oh, dropping the log.
33:23That's a penalty.
33:24You'll pay for that later.
33:25Eight.
33:26Three.
33:27Four.
33:28Four.
33:29Four is up.
33:30Eight.
33:31Four.
33:32Four.
33:33Four is up.
33:34Eight.
33:35Four.
33:36I realize that this exercise can tire your shoulders, so now we will work on something
33:41else.
33:42Squats.
33:43Down.
33:44Feet your hands on the log.
33:47Up.
33:48Two.
33:49Down.
33:50Up.
33:51Eight.
33:52Down.
33:53Up.
33:54Down.
33:55Get over there.
33:57Up.
33:58In order to get off this log and go back on your own small little log that weighs a hell
34:03of a lot less than this.
34:04You're going to have to keep that log extended arm for 45 seconds.
34:10Get it the first time.
34:11Go back to your log.
34:13Whenever you're ready.
34:14Up.
34:15Up.
34:16Up.
34:17Time has started.
34:19Come on, give it up.
34:21Put it up.
34:22Up.
34:23Up.
34:24Up.
34:25Up.
34:26Up.
34:27Up.
34:28Up.
34:29Up.
34:30Up.
34:31Up.
34:32Up.
34:33Up.
34:34Up.
34:35Up.
34:36Up.
34:37Up.
34:38Last crew did it.
34:39Last crew did it.
34:40First shot.
34:41Almost there.
34:42Keep it up.
34:43Almost there.
34:44Come on.
34:45Keep it up.
34:46My feet in.
34:47Come on.
34:48Oh, no.
34:49Right hand shoulder position move.
34:50Gentlemen, you had four seconds left.
34:52Four seconds left and you would be back on your small little log.
34:55However, you did not make the time so let's work on your strength training.
34:58Four count overheads.
34:59overheads. One, two, three, four. If you had four more seconds in you right now, you'd
35:11be on your log. Okay, 45 seconds. Who's the cocks into this crew? Who are you? Who are
35:20you? It's in Holly. It's in Holly. I don't like this little defeatist attitude you've
35:26developed. If you see that attitude, it just makes us want to crush you. If you accept
35:30defeat again, I'll bring you right back over and I'll make it twice as hard. Let's do it,
35:35fellas. Let's do it. Stand it up. Get it up. Whenever you get it off your head, we'll start
35:43the time. Get up closer to it. Right hand shoulder position move. Mr. Holly, do you need to switch
35:52anybody around on this log? Hey, somebody needs to get up. I'll get up front. You realize,
35:57Mr. Holly, that this is your log. You are in charge of it just like you're in charge of
36:00a boat. You might need to spread your power around. Standard arm, 45 seconds. Get it
36:08out. And time has started. Everybody works together. Everybody works equal. Not all that
36:18bad. Almost there. Come on, fellas. Get it up. Keep it up. Keep it up. Keep it up. Get
36:22that thing up. Four seconds. Log PT is fairly on your regular log. As long as everybody's
36:31putting out, holding their weight. Keep it up. And right hand shoulder position move. Right
36:39hand starting position move. Yeah, you can't forget about that penalty. Gentlemen, if you want to
36:47come back, just feel free to shit up on your old log. Go. Get their asses kicked. They always
36:56do. As the day grinds on, the entire class is tired. But Walker's boat crew is failing.
37:04Get it up. Put it out. Put it out. Come on. Put it out. We're definitely looking for teamwork
37:13issues and leadership issues. Step. An evolution like this, you really start to see the weak
37:20links or the guys in the class. The class doesn't like because they're holding them
37:25back. Up. Come on. Those guys that are falling down and all that stuff, you know, there's
37:32no excuse for that. They're fine. There's nothing wrong with them. They just haven't overcome
37:36that barrier mentally. Get it up. I can't do this by myself. Come on. Come on. Albus,
37:46go to the other side. The body language tells the story. Some of Walker's crew have quit
37:52trying. The instructors watch but do nothing. They know that when students get a reputation
37:57for weakness, the class will eventually find out and bring peer pressure upon the ineffectual
38:03students to either perform or quit. What's your problem? I feel dizzy. I feel dehydrated.
38:11Up. Up. Three. Apparently not drinking enough water. Roll the log off your shoulder. Don't
38:16roll the log off your shoulder. I'm starting to see a tweenie bird swimming around your head.
38:20Stars. A tweenie bird's going to be spinning around your head in a minute. Go get a drink.
38:26Get back here. Hurry up. Hurry up. Okay. To get off this log, get back on your tiny little
38:34log. Extend it arm. 45 seconds. Get it up. While old misery teaches another boat crew about
38:40teamwork, class 234 is learning why it pays to be a winner. Right now I'm doing this to their
38:48legs because all day they've had a lot of upper body work, a lot of shoulders. So I'm going
38:53to get their legs for a little bit, give them a break on the shoulders.
38:57Winner's over here.
39:00Hoo-yah! Get it up there!
39:04There's a method to our madness.
39:08Are you back to your normal self?
39:12H.C. Schaefer, instructor Pat Stone.
39:16Do you always talk that stupid or is this normal for you?
39:20I'm a little tired and weak right now.
39:23Yeah, and you want me to rub your belly?
39:29Rub your belly, pat your bottom.
39:31What did your mom do?
39:33Would your mom massage your shoulders a little bit?
39:35This is day one.
39:37Everybody else is out there.
39:39They're getting their ass beat just like you are.
39:41You're dealing with it.
39:42Yeah, it's rough to pass, so.
39:44A lot of times they're in the hard, the super, super hard stuff.
39:48They'll get a little bit dehydrated.
39:51If they didn't get a good lunch, they only had a sandwich rather than three sandwiches,
39:56their blood glucose will get a little bit low and they'll get a little funky.
39:59He was pretty much with it mentally.
40:01He answered my questions well.
40:03His lips were good, his pulse was good.
40:06He's good to go, but just put him in the back of my head as somebody to keep an eye on.
40:11You ready to get on your log?
40:13I'm weak, but I need to get back with my team.
40:16Start feeling super stupid, come on back.
40:18I'm feeling something that fast, son.
40:25There are four classes a year at BUDS and class 234 is a winter class.
40:31Winter classes have the highest dropout rate because of the cold.
40:35Who are you?
40:36It's Gary.
40:38It's Gary.
40:39These are your men.
40:40This is your log.
40:41You're in charge of it.
40:42You're in charge of them.
40:44Tell them where they need to go and what they need to do.
40:47BUDS is a war of attrition, a contest of luck and commitment.
40:51Each student must demonstrate a dedication to remain in training no matter the hardship.
40:56The irony is that commitment alone is not always enough to guarantee success.
41:01The surgery they're talking about that I'm going to have on my shoulder is pretty serious.
41:05It takes a long time to recover.
41:06And if I come back, I don't know if my shoulder would be in good enough shape to go through
41:11the training.
41:12This is like the first time you've ever been tested, isn't it?
41:14Negative.
41:15Negative.
41:16I've been tested in the past.
41:17Oh, you've been tested harder than this?
41:18Negative.
41:19Did you fail then?
41:20Negative.
41:21Have you been tested this hard ever in your life?
41:22Never.
41:23So you're telling me that you're failing?
41:24Yeah.
41:25Is that acceptable to you?
41:26Negative.
41:27Winning here is a conscious decision.
41:28Yeah.
41:29The other thing that I'm going to have on my shoulder is a free series.
41:30It takes a long time to recover.
41:31And if I come back, I don't know if my shoulder would be in good enough shape to go through
41:34the training.
41:35This is like the first time you've ever been tested, isn't it?
41:38Negative.
41:39I've been tested in the past.
41:40Oh, you've been tested harder than this?
41:42Negative.
41:43Not harder than this.
41:44Negative.
41:45Have you been tested this hard ever in your life?
41:46Never.
41:47So you're telling me that you're failing?
41:49Yeah.
