00:00In war, there are no time-outs, no contrived popularity contests to decide life and death.
00:18This program is about the 83 young men of Class 234, and their six months long struggle to become U.S. Navy SEALs
00:26in a training course called Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL Training, or BUDS.
00:33BUDS is far more than another reality television survivor contest.
00:38There is only one rule to remember. It pays to be a winner.
00:56There is really no transition between second and third phase. We did the 5.5 last Thursday, and then Friday morning we were in third phase. There is really no time to think about it.
01:16Class 234 begins third phase, tired, but eager to train.
01:25Today, the emphasis is on weapon safety and proficiency with the M4 rifle. Safety is the rule. One mistake here can be deadly.
01:35Bring your hand up and lock it up.
01:36The job is very dangerous.
01:36The job is very dangerous.
01:37This is your magazine, right? Is that working?
01:41Any instructor out here can recall numerous times where it's been life and death. We train very hard. We almost train harder than we would on deployment. We train how we fight. It's very serious. It's very realistic, and it is very dangerous. I've lost friends in training. It's a dangerous job. Very dangerous.
01:58Qualifying to shoot accurately and safely under timed scenarios will include passing a timed weapons assembly test while identifying every moving part.
02:09Are you lollipopping this thing?
02:11Yes.
02:12Okay.
02:12Lollipopping is when you take your front sight post, and this is your target. You want to take it so it's right here and it looks like a lollipop, but your front sight post is the stick, and this is the head of the lollipop.
02:22It makes a better sight picture, and you can compensate with your sights, moving it up and down, so that when you shoot, even though you're aiming here, your bullet will actually impact in the center of the target.
02:33The philosophy in BUDS is the training's never over. It's not over after you make it through first phase. It's certainly not over after you make it through dive phase. When you get to third phase, a lot of your SEAL core training is just beginning, as far as, like I said, demolition tactics, land warfare.
02:47You get a feel of seriousness real quick, and just the mood of the instructors and everybody around it, you know that, you know, you better walk it on and pay attention and, you know, know what the heck you're doing because it's dangerous stuff.
03:01What these guys are doing right now, we're in the first week of 10 right out here at Camp Pendleton, and this first week we're just concentrating on rifle work, the M4s, getting these guys proficient, getting them qualled up.
03:12Third phase instructors treat us a lot differently. It's better quality of life. It's more relaxed, I think, but yet still professional.
03:21We're still locked in because obviously safety is the most important thing in third phase out of any phase.
03:26I think we're treated a little bit more like people, a little bit closer to that goal, so that's definitely nice.
03:33Closer to the goal does not mean easier or less risk. It means the stakes get higher.
03:38All right, so number five, number six, four seconds, two shots each.
03:43The problem we get in third phase is they start breaking down medically.
03:46Here we go.
03:47Breaking down medically is everybody's fear. It can happen suddenly.
03:52Step off the line. Actually, I'll give you a whistle.
03:54I think he just rolled his ankle, took a bad step coming down the mountain. It looked like he just sprained his ankle really good.
03:59He got rolled back, and he'll probably join up with the next class once they hit third phase.
04:04What answer do you guys want to use, big or small?
04:07Land warfare includes tactical shooting, the bread and butter of every SEAL platoon.
04:15Trainees must run past different stations, such as trash cans or window cutouts, which require different firing positions.
04:23Shooting targets at 200 yards. Scores are a function of accuracy versus time.
04:29Fast is slow. Slow is quick. Quick is smooth.
04:32We've had some guys who've had a problem in dive phase, and they come to third phase, and they shine.
04:39It's just a different element. It's an entirely different training.
04:43Miss.
04:43So just because a student does well in dive phase doesn't mean he's going to cruise third phase by any means.
04:51Miss.
04:52I'm safe. Let's move.
04:54Let's go, let's go.
04:55Normally, I'm, you know, pretty good.
04:57But, uh, yeah, everyone has their good days and their bad days.
05:02Another miss.
05:04Take your time.
05:05Squeeze off a round.
05:08Miss.
05:08Weapon on safe. What are you doing?
05:10We got blanks in your gun.
05:15It's a miss.
05:17Lively neglects to check his sights before starting and is using the wrong sight aperture.
05:21Let's go. Move, move, move, move, move.
05:25Miss.
05:28Hit.
05:29Time stopped. 2-12.
05:31Lively.
05:32That was horrendous.
05:33What got me frustrated was the fact that I didn't figure out I had the large aperture on until I got to, like, down to the last three targets.
05:38Step over here. Face down range, clear and safe.
05:41There's two different sights. You've got one for night, which is pretty large, obviously, because you can't see as well at night.
05:45And you've got a small, blank pinhole for the daytime.
05:48And you have the large aperture on for the daytime.
05:50Should have brought my glasses.
05:52Your axe is going to be way off.
05:53That's what Fox did, too.
05:54He, uh, otherwise he would have been perfect, I think.
06:03Miss.
06:04Every SEAL operator can make mistakes.
06:07The key is to recognize and correct it quickly.
06:10When Fox realizes his sights are set wrong, he adjusts without hesitation.
06:16I've, uh, hunted all my life, and I'm pretty good with long-range rifles.
06:21Hit.
06:22I've shot with scopes, open snipes.
06:24Hit.
06:26That weapon on safe.
06:28Hit.
06:32Hit.
06:32Time stop, 1-0-9.
06:35Face down range, clear and safe.
06:37Damn thing was, uh, on the large aperture.
06:39Nice going.
06:40I'm being sarcastic, Fox.
06:41How's this evolution for you?
06:42Pretty easy. It's fun.
06:44Wish I'd have had something like this back home.
06:46Tell me what your time was.
06:48It was 1-29.
06:50You were moving pretty good, like it was Kentucky time, Missouri time out there.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Pretty good.
06:56I'd have done a lot better if I'd have had that aperture put down, but, you know, excuses are like...
07:01You adjusted, though, right?
07:04Yeah, I did.
07:05I did adjust.
07:07And I hit every one of them after that.
07:10Target!
07:11Class 234 is now mastering the skills of shooting, but the targets are only paper or metal.
07:20The students know they remain apprentices in a combat profession.
07:26So right when that shot goes off, you start squeezing it.
07:29It's nice to actually touch guns now, and they treat us as men in this phase.
07:33You're given a little more responsibility.
07:34You see the black specks?
07:36Yeah.
07:36Are you sure?
07:37Yes.
07:39Is your left and your right arm...
07:40SEAL instructors do not let the class celebrate anything short of excellence.
07:46Chira qualifies after two failures, but is dropped down for not doing it right the first time.
07:52Hey, Chira.
07:54That took you long enough.
07:56Yeah.
07:56All right, welcome to the club.
07:58That guy helped you a lot, huh?
08:02Extremely helpful, yes.
08:03What was the problem, do you think?
08:05Chira, you are awful.
08:06It's Chira.
08:07Just a week.
08:08Chira, I'm going to pull you off by NQ.
08:11It's a no qualm.
08:13And put you over on the E section.
08:15I can't believe it.
08:16Drop down.
08:16Sharing hardships creates a bond that many envy and few will ever understand.
08:22See, the only way you can tell me in current part right now?
08:24He's wearing a jacket.
08:25He's wearing...
08:25No, he's got a jacket on.
08:26No, it's all camouflage.
08:28Y'all looks the same.
08:28That doesn't count.
08:29But he's a lefty.
08:31Yeah.
08:32Everybody, close your eyes real quick.
08:33Close your eyes real quick.
08:34Class 234 is now a band of brothers.
08:37Who's who?
08:37You don't know, do you?
08:41Exactly.
08:41What's up, Lively?
08:42And the way we shoot our guns.
08:43I'm kind of like this.
08:44That's what's cool about it, is that you can get this many people from different backgrounds
08:48come together, work as a team, and get along great.
08:53CQD stands for close quarters defense.
08:55Turn.
08:55It is a system that's been developed to respond to both shooting and non-shooting threats
09:01during naval special warfare missions.
09:04Slowly roll towards any flags.
09:05Don't move.
09:07CQD techniques demand discipline and total focus, a taste of the aggression and control
09:13combat requires.
09:14Don't move.
09:15Do you have any weapons on you?
09:16Move.
09:17Don't fight me.
09:17Don't resist.
09:18You're not going to get hurt.
09:19We want these guys to be the most dynamic and the most aggressive in the fight.
09:22You have to respond appropriately to the threat against you.
09:26If it is a shooting threat, you need to be pulling the trigger first.
09:29Turn towards your butt.
09:30Get out.
09:31Get out.
09:32Get out.
09:33Get out.
09:34Get down.
09:34Get down.
09:35After two days of classroom study, the students face their first CQD simulation.
09:42You see a dude?
09:42You see a gun?
09:43Get out.
09:44Get out.
09:45Get away from the gun.
09:46You guys have to turn it up.
09:47All right?
09:48You got to turn it up.
09:49That little, hey, get up.
09:51Hey, get out.
09:52He would have done exactly what you said, except you guys weren't weak.
09:55All right?
09:55So you go, get up.
09:56He was like, they ain't there.
09:58I'll go for it.
09:59All right?
10:00You see what I'm saying?
10:01You want to give him a no doubt in your mind by the way you present yourself, the confidence,
10:04the way you speak, the way you guys are in the realm, that he does not want to mess with you.
10:08I've never been in a gunfight before, where someone's shooting at you, and you and your buddy are either shooting back,
10:14or if he's not shooting, you know, just trying to keep control of him.
10:18And it kind of brings it closer to home really quick, and just how real it can get,
10:24and how easily you or your friend can get shot if you screw up.
10:27Indecision must be quickly replaced with the assertiveness needed in any combat action.
10:32Bring him towards me.
10:34We want guys to be aggressive, dynamic warriors.
10:37I mean, we're preparing these guys to go to war.
10:39But on the flip side, we want to develop the person, too,
10:42so that you succeed not only in battle, but that you succeed in your personal life.
10:46And anything you attempt to take on, you're going to be successful.
10:49In this.
10:49Bongo.
10:51You're on the wall.
10:54Class 234 now moves to San Clemente Island.
10:57There are three weeks left until graduation.
10:59We come out to San Clemente Island because it is so high risk.
11:04Everything, all the live fire evolutions, the demolition ranges, the water work, the sleep deprivation,
11:10the nights, the tired nights where their concentration has to be so dialed on to ensure, number one, their safety.
11:16They're not killing each other or blowing themselves up on the range or blowing us up, worse.
11:20So, yes, the focus, the stress is all there, and we're going to cram it down their throats and see how they react.
11:27You already inflate them?
11:28The original mission for SEALS was as underwater demolition team frogmen clearing beaches of obstacles before an amphibious assault.
11:37This, simply put, is a bomb.
11:39A 50-pound bomb.
11:4125 pounds of C4 in each one of these green purses.
11:44Visibility in the water is poor, but being comfortable underwater is now second nature for men who must focus on a dangerous task.
11:58You're looking at getting washed in with the waves and getting washed back out, and you're trying to keep yourself there.
12:04It's a lot of work.
12:05You're really having to work those legs a lot with those fins, trying to keep there your spot.
12:09And you have to kind of get used to not so much fighting against it.
12:13You have to try and work with it.
12:16The class moves a safe distance away for detonation.
12:19Everything seems to be in place, but the results are unsatisfactory.
12:35You guys were told how to do it right.
12:37You guys didn't do it.
12:38The charge was supposed to go off in 14 minutes.
12:40They were told how to calculate it.
12:42The charge went off in a little over 18 minutes.
12:44I expect you guys to do it right, especially when we're dealing with demo.
12:47We tell them to go ahead and make sure that once they do the calculations that they do a test burn.
12:51We do not know when exactly the thing's going to be going off, or you guys are not 100% sure when it's going off.
12:56Do you think that's something we might want to know?
12:58Well, that's just attention to detail.
13:00I would think so.
13:00The bottom line is they missed one of the procedures, a key procedure.
13:04I think it's safe to say that the three that were responsible here, that they'll remember this.
13:09All right.
13:09All three of you are going to be staying down here at Camp Stupid.
13:12You guys know where Camp Stupid is?
13:14No, Chief.
13:14You guys are going to be living down there on the beach for the next few nights.
13:20Had this been an actual combat scenario, SEALs could have died.
13:24The chief will use this opportunity to deliver a strong message on trust between officers and enlisted men.
13:30You just get thrown into these situations, and you have to focus on doing it right, or else you're going to get dropped, or, you know, you're going to hurt yourself or hurt your buddy.
13:44If you know what you were told to do, a test burn today, I think he was under the impression that it was done.
13:50Next time he gives someone the task of doing a test burn, you think he's going to trust them to do it?
13:58I hate micromanagers.
14:00And this is how we create them.
14:03That time future is almost four minutes off.
14:08The test burn was not done.
14:11As enlisted guys, we have to make sure that officers are able to trust us.
14:17And when they give us a job to do, we can already tell them, it's been done.
14:22This is not how you create trusting officers.
14:26Is there any questions on this?
14:30Time for excuses and all that stuff?
14:33It's over.
14:34Preparing to explode more ordnance, the class mood is somber.
14:50Attention to detail is the order of the day.
14:53Several students have come close to major safety violations.
14:56No one wants to draw more attention to themselves.
14:59I just want to make sure we're tight.
15:01If you're making a mistake here right now, it's going to cost you either, you know, at the very minimum, your career at Bud's or your career at the team, or it's going to cost them all their lives.
15:11So, you know, it's not time to relax at all yet.
15:15I mean, not even close.
15:17The Bangor's more explosive, I believe.
15:19Sir?
15:20The Bangor's?
15:21Yes, the Bangor's more explosive.
15:24So let's just say it's going to be one big boom if you want to get technical.
15:28So the old UDT beach clearing, the underwater demolition we did today, it kind of like wraps up the end of demo week.
15:35Kind of let it go out on a hoo-yah kind of thing.
15:37One challenge of third phase is the relentless seven-day-a-week schedule.
15:57Meant to simulate the stress of combat, the students will sleep whenever and wherever they can.
16:02It sucks. There is no sleep.
16:09Everyone, you know, you get pretty tired, and every time you can try to take a cat nap, you squeeze one in.
16:14You know, even if it's just five minutes, you just sit down and close your eyes for five minutes.
16:18But, you know, you just got to deal with it.
16:21Your body gets used to it, I suppose.
16:23As long as I'm doing something, sleep deprivation doesn't really bother me all that much.
16:27We stop and watch things, listen to them breathe.
16:31I just get so tired, I can't fight my eyes open anymore.
16:37And even though I stand up, I'll still start falling asleep.
16:41And I'll wake up in the middle of a pitcher or a yaw to one side or the other.
16:48And I'm like, oh, geez, here it goes.
16:50Yes, I did fall asleep.
16:51That was just not good.
16:53That was, you know, completely unprofessional.
16:55Stop, what are you doing?
16:57Look up at me.
16:58Get your back straight.
17:00Do not disrespect the instructor's staff again like that or your proctor.
17:06Are we clear?
17:07Yes, instructor, do.
17:10You covered, get out of here.
17:11Yeah, sure, yeah.
17:12The ruck pump is a grueling 10-mile run across the island.
17:31Each man carries a rucksack loaded with sand weighing over 40 pounds.
17:47Everyone takes a turn at being wounded and must be carried as well.
17:51Seals are trained never to leave a man behind.
17:54Go, go, go, go.
17:55Set up.
17:56Go, carry that ruck.
17:59Come on, three.
18:00Hold one.
18:01Get out of here.
18:02Get out of here.
18:02Get out of here.
18:04Push that.
18:05Come on.
18:07Go.
18:08Go, go, go.
18:11Go to the right.
18:12Go to the right.
18:15At the end of the hump, there is a surprise weigh-in.
18:18It is an integrity check.
18:19What the hell did you guys give me?
18:21The class was told to make every pack, including the instructors,
18:24weigh between 40 to 50 pounds.
18:26Woo!
18:27You guys gave me all 55 pounds of love.
18:29Hooking the proctor up.
18:31Thanks for hooking the proctor up, fellas.
18:32Now the instructors wait to see if anyone cheated.
18:36Oh, no!
18:37Oh, no!
18:38Back up!
18:39Back up!
18:39Back up!
18:40Potter is the first man discovered to have an underweight pack.
18:43Now it's on there.
18:44Look at that bag.
18:45He has that big teetering.
18:46Oh.
18:47Yeah.
18:48Now, Lively.
18:51Lively's pack is found to be underweight as well.
18:54Drop down with your partner over there.
18:56Take your rock.
18:59It's too close to being.
19:01You tried extra hard, Lively.
19:02You're good.
19:03Saunt him.
19:08Oh, Justice.
19:09When Justice is discovered to have a light pack also,
19:12the three trainees are separated from the class.
19:15With the staff having anywhere between 55 and 60 pounds,
19:18you fellas at 40.
19:22It's not going to cut it, gentlemen.
19:23Push him out.
19:24Yeah.
19:25Down.
19:26Down.
19:27What were you told by your proctor?
19:28Get it right, Lively.
19:29I know what I put out.
19:30It was a sandbag instructor.
19:32Mr. Lively, shut up.
19:34It seems like 22 other guys got it right.
19:37After sailing through Bud's training,
19:39Lively walks the line once too often and loses.
19:4240, 40, 40 pounds minimum to 50 pounds.
19:43There's sandbag and you're rocking the rock run tomorrow.
19:46There we go.
19:47Hey, how about you three recover?
19:49The instructors are angry because Lively is a class favorite
19:52and now he is showing an attitude.
19:55Lively's infractions so close to the end of training
19:57will cost him dearly.
20:00See you guys.
20:02So guys, look up to you.
20:03You've already been here.
20:04You're supposed to kind of almost, what, know the ropes?
20:06You're setting guys back.
20:08You're irritating myself and the rest of the instructor staff
20:10because we're constantly having this doggone problem
20:13with the same people every single time.
20:17You're supposed to graduate here in discipline, right?
20:19Integrity.
20:20Do you think every time we turn our back
20:23and you pull some crap like that, that discipline?
20:27Is that going to happen in teams?
20:29It's the biggest thing to get you kicked out of here.
20:31Director of Training is standing over there.
20:34It's our call.
20:36We can pass everything, that's fine.
20:38But if you don't have the integrity or the discipline
20:40to do the right thing and we're not watching,
20:43then you're useless to us.
20:45That's it.
20:46Now, spotlight's back on you.
20:50Lively, the instructor and staff and I agree
20:53that you're going to, you and the other two guys,
20:56you're going to get a sandbag, 60 pounds.
20:59You're going to carry that thing around for three days
21:01everywhere you go except for the surf zone.
21:03You think this is over in two weeks?
21:06You're just beginning.
21:06A likely event you graduate lightly,
21:10you put in 20 years,
21:12get used to being cold and tired and wet and miserable,
21:16man, you're just beginning.
21:18It ain't over in two weeks.
21:19Two weeks is just beginning.
21:21Right?
21:22Yes, sir.
21:22Get out of here.
21:23A bug's tradition at San Clemente Island
21:34is a PT workout before every meal.
21:43Running up Frog Hill,
21:44the students carrying the extra weight
21:46show the pain and aggravation are adding up.
21:49Combat tactics are the core building blocks
22:10on which SEAL platoons operate.
22:13The most basic is the immediate action drill,
22:15or IAD.
22:16IADs are rehearsed movements,
22:23and in the crawl, walk, run philosophy of Bugs,
22:25they are rehearsed over and over again
22:27until they are done right.
22:32Doggone it, Spinoids, what the hell?
22:34It takes a while to catch on.
22:35You can't just tell them something
22:36and expect them to do it right the first time.
22:38It's just constantly critiquing them,
22:41and they'll eventually get it.
22:43She's fired!
22:44If we were going live right now,
22:46these are people that would be having safety violations.
22:49Mr. Hugh, you keep making mistakes.
22:50I'm going to suggest to the lieutenant
22:52that you don't even go live tomorrow.
22:53You understand?
22:54Yes, it's a certain deal.
22:55Because you're showing me
22:56you don't have the confidence
22:57to do what you're supposed to be doing here.
22:59Critiquing.
23:00What?
23:00Where are we going?
23:01Bell face!
23:02Bell face!
23:04Guys, what is this guy gonna harm?
23:06Move!
23:06Move!
23:07Move!
23:07When the lights are turned out,
23:16weapons are going off,
23:18M60s are firing,
23:20explosions,
23:21it's chaos.
23:22One man takes the wrong step,
23:23next thing you know,
23:24you're shooting each other.
23:25It's scary business,
23:26and that's why everybody has to be tuned in.
23:29Pull your head out!
23:29This is what we don't want to see happen tomorrow,
23:39up on the range.
23:41That was ridiculous!
23:43You guys, if you drop down...
23:44The exhausting schedule is taking its toll.
23:47Attention to safety is faltering.
23:49The class acts confused and scattered.
23:52Would it help?
23:53So you know where down range is
23:55if one of us were down there shooting at you guys,
23:57so you know which way to return fire.
23:58Would that help?
23:59We are.
24:00Wait, what?
24:01No.
24:07The next day,
24:09the class reports to the range for live fire IAD.
24:19After 10 hours of practice the previous night,
24:21the mood is tense
24:22as the men load magazines,
24:24get online,
24:25and lock in.
24:26It's late,
24:26I got you ready to go down.
24:27You guys need to be
24:28live or not?
24:29Target!
24:37High sound range.
24:39You guys,
24:39control them in the middle of the jungle.
24:42You're all quiet.
24:43All you hear is a few monkeys.
24:45And all of a sudden,
24:50contact.
24:55Every time you pick up a weapon,
25:01that's game day.
25:02That's the day that you have to perform.
25:04There's no other way to do business here in the steel teams.
25:19The guys know that, they see the graduations two weeks away, but that's a long two weeks
25:24and it can be a lot longer depending on how they perform.
25:33As the drill proceeds, the hours of practice pay off.
25:37The 25 members of class 234 work smoothly.
25:52But no matter how well it goes, there is always more to learn.
25:55When you guys are doing this, you guys are doing your magazine changes, don't be coming
25:59up on one arm so it's easier to get to that magazine.
26:02What are we doing with ourselves here?
26:04You're making yourself a better target, right?
26:07When you're going to do that, go ahead, stay down, lay that head down and get that magazine
26:12out.
26:13But don't bring it up any higher.
26:15Lively's problems continue.
26:30He makes another critical mistake when he runs short of ammunition during a drill.
26:35The instructors stop the evolution and Lively is punished.
26:38What did you tell Instructor Stearns?
26:39I told Instructor Stearns I only had seven magazines.
26:42Okay.
26:43Those are the facts?
26:45Yes.
26:46It was one of those deals that I had to lug the heavy rucksack up here, so I left early.
26:51And in the meantime, I missed the handing out of mags.
26:53Well, guess what, Lively, we've got some time with you.
26:57The instructors do not care about Lively's excuses.
27:00With his integrity problem fresh in their minds, this incident provokes a strong reaction.
27:07So you didn't think that was kind of important to let someone know that you don't have all
27:10your rounds, Lively?
27:13Lively.
27:14Yes, sir, sir.
27:15Halfway down.
27:18So you don't think that's kind of important to let someone know that, hey, I don't have
27:23all my rounds I'm supposed to have?
27:25Yeah, that's important.
27:26I'm responsible for you, Lively.
27:27Oh, yeah.
27:28Am I responsible to make sure you have all your rounds?
27:31No, sir, sir.
27:32I am.
27:35All the way up?
27:36Chaser rabbits.
27:38The loadout was nine magazines.
27:41And he decided to bring seven and not tell anybody.
27:48So why is that important, Lively?
27:49Stop what you're doing.
27:50Look at me.
27:51Why is that important?
27:53It's because we have to have a full loadout.
27:56It's a full loadout.
27:57So what?
27:58So you guys go on patrol and you get to your target and you find out, hey, I only got three
28:02magazines.
28:03Because I only had three magazines.
28:05So I'm not going to tell anybody.
28:06I'm just going to go out with three magazines.
28:09Right?
28:10Yes.
28:11Yes?
28:12That seem right to you?
28:13That's definitely not right.
28:14I'm not right.
28:15So do you think that you did the right thing?
28:16I definitely did not do the right thing, Chuck Stern.
28:18Lively, I guess he had some difficulties with certain evolutions.
28:21You could just see that the instructors were kind of peeing on him a little more than usual.
28:26I basically talked with him, telling him, hey, this is what they want to see.
28:30They want to see you perform under pressure.
28:32And I know what it was like to have instructors jump all over you.
28:35So I wanted to give him that perspective.
28:38Lively is carrying the bad title of almost being the whipping boy.
28:43And the poor guy brings it on himself.
28:46Lively's got a personality that just brings pain onto himself.
28:49He's so high-vis.
28:50How can you not mistake a short, stocky, bald guy with an enormous head?
28:56Like a guy in a bar, and everybody wants to fight.
28:59Things have come pretty easy so far.
29:01I think for the first time, I got a little pressure on me.
29:04And that's fine.
29:05I can deal with it just fine.
29:07But I just have to sweat it out.
29:09Keep doing what I'm doing, not making mistakes.
29:11If they want to get on my ass, that's fine.
29:13But I'm not going to give them any serious reasons to really get into me.
29:18So...
29:19I don't know, sir.
29:20Am I doing okay?
29:21I'm doing great.
29:22Thanks.
29:23Are you losing weight on me?
29:24You look like you're going to have flies crawling across your eyes.
29:27And I don't know.
29:28I've got Alex Brothers out here begging for UNICEF phones.
29:30Are you losing weight?
29:31Yes.
29:32I don't want to bump it up.
29:33We're just getting water.
29:34I thought you said if you're not ready.
29:36What's that?
29:37You said you want to quit?
29:38Negative, Instructor Deal.
29:39You said you're scared.
29:40No, Instructor Deal.
29:41Yes.
29:42He talked to me.
29:43He said right now he's a little confused on the range.
29:45Hey, Morgan said he'll quit with you.
29:47No, he didn't.
29:48Instructor Deal.
29:53Lively is resupplied with magazines and the class continues the IAD drills.
29:58Yeah, everybody did really good.
30:00All I practiced last night definitely paid off.
30:07I think it went really well.
30:08We had really good teamwork.
30:09Pretty cool.
30:11Fun stuff.
30:13I think most of the people, that's probably what they joined up for.
30:17The shooting, the demolitions, the fun stuff, I guess.
30:22Class 234 performs well and the IAD drill is passed.
30:29We're up.
30:30Ten push-ups per item.
30:32Ten push-ups per item?
30:33Should have said five push-ups per item.
30:35Geary and Engenery are caught breaking the rules.
30:42Geary's nickname is the Reverend, earned because of his steadfast refusal to curse out loud.
30:47The Reverend will now pay in full for his sins.
30:50Yet he knows that Buds is a game of wits as well as honor and it always pays to be a winner.
30:56Four hundred and sixty push-ups.
30:59All right.
31:00What about the food?
31:02That was my screw-up, Chief.
31:04You can do whatever you want with the food.
31:05Oh, I know it's your screw-up.
31:06I know.
31:07There's no doubt about that.
31:08I know.
31:09You're earning it.
31:10You might as well keep it.
31:11All right.
31:12Go get wet.
31:13Do your push-ups.
31:14Watch that.
31:15Where are you going to do the push-ups?
31:17Right outside Chief Saw room.
31:19Five, six, seven, eight, nine, fifty.
31:25All right.
31:26Let's reach it out.
31:27What happens after the push-ups?
31:29Free and clear.
31:30We get to take our gear and we still have a lot of cleaning to do tonight.
31:35So it'll be a late night.
31:37I had to get wet because I had candy in my locker.
31:40We're supposed to have it in the fridge.
31:42So I broke a pretty big rule.
31:44To break rules, you gotta be willing to pay the risk, you know?
31:48If it doesn't pay out.
31:49Ready?
31:50Yes.
31:51Want to do fifty more?
31:52You guys could cheat.
31:54But is there a feeling that there's always someone over your shoulder?
31:58Yeah.
31:59I mean you get that being buzzed and the integrity issue all the time.
32:04They don't think it's probably worth it to get caught cheating on it.
32:08They know if they know they get caught, they're going to get hammered.
32:11One, two, three, four, five.
32:12Plus like the Chief leaving us to do it on our own, that's a huge display of his faith
32:24in us that, you know, we're going to do what we need to do, you know?
32:28We made a deal with him to earn our stuff back and that's a big deal.
32:33I would never, I'd never cross Chief.
32:36The last year that he's done and over with, I don't think they'll be doing it again.
32:40All right.
32:41So sir, you got them.
32:42These are your points.
32:43All right.
32:44All right guys, here it is.
32:45The people who are doing flights are over here in the box.
32:48Mr. Case, you two.
32:49We get guys, we can beat them all day, all night.
32:52These guys just come out smiling and laughing and that's the kind of attitude we're looking
32:56for.
32:57This is our heel.
32:58This is our heel.
32:59This is our heel.
33:00This is our heel.
33:01This is our heel.
33:02This is our heel.
33:03This is our heel.
33:04What are you going to do?
33:05You're going to go up the hill.
33:06About every 20 yards you're going to go whop, whop, whop, whop, whop, whop and continue
33:11on.
33:12All the way up the hill, whoppin'.
33:14Frog hill sucked.
33:19I hated frog hill.
33:21That thing starts out and it's about maybe 100, 150 yards of just a gentle incline.
33:27And then all of a sudden it takes off like almost straight up for about another 60 or
33:3170 yards.
33:32By the time you get to it, you feel like your thighs are going to explode halfway up the hill
33:37and you just don't think you can make it, but you know, you just keep pushing and pushing
33:40and pushing.
33:41I told you to take off.
33:42One, two.
33:43Take off.
33:44Eight.
33:45Eight.
33:46Eight.
33:47What are you looking at?
33:50Oh, it's up there.
33:52First lift up.
33:54Frogs and saw you.
33:55The relationship of students and instructors is one of mutual respect.
34:01Plugging a 65 pound pallet up frog hill while pretending to be an airplane won't dampen
34:06the spirit of the class, still keyed up from their successful IAD.
34:10The instructors know the class is performing well.
34:11Flights up frog hill are a tradition, but they also serve the big picture.
34:17Besides tradition, what is this for?
34:18Range violations today.
34:19You guys do everything from calling a clear and safe weapon with the magazine, still in
34:20the weapon.
34:21the weapon.
34:22Banging down the weapon.
34:23Banging down the weapon.
34:24You guys do everything from calling a clear and safe weapon with the magazine, still in
34:28the weapon.
34:29Banging down the weapon on the range.
34:30Almost sweeping individuals.
34:31Missing gear items on the swim.
34:32Missing swim list.
34:33Muzzle discipline.
34:34Range violations.
34:35Range violations.
34:36Posting horns.
34:37Car Adams.
34:38Star Helo.
34:39Request permission to land.
34:40Star helo.
34:41We had on.
34:42First left.
34:43I have Worms.
34:44Tuck, you guys are also playing a head.
34:45You've got a head.
34:46Call and up.
34:47There you go.
34:48Go, go, go, go.
34:49The weapon.
34:50Go, go, go, go.
34:51Go, go, go, go, go.
34:52Go, go, go.
34:53Go, go.
34:54Go, go.
34:55Go, go, go.
34:56Go, go, go.
34:57Go, go, go, go, go.
34:58Go, go, go.
34:59Go, go, go, go.
35:00Go, go, go.
35:01Go, go.
35:02Go, go, go, go.
35:03Go, go, go.
35:04It's our helo. We had a pilot go in the drink.
35:09Go get him.
35:11Hey, you don't need to spin around anymore. Just go get him.
35:13He fell in the drink.
35:14No, he fell in the drink. Really?
35:17Only one week separates Class 234 from Bud's graduation.
35:22This week is comprised of final exams
35:24where the students must demonstrate all the many skills they have learned.
35:30You've exercised the stupidity out of you.
35:32Everybody feel better?
35:33Yes.
35:34Yeah.
35:34Bud's training reaches the final hurdle.
35:39Class 234 is ready to carry out a nighttime live-fire full-mission profile attack
35:44against a simulated enemy base.
35:51Class is doing well.
35:52They're in the hardest part of it right now.
35:53They're going into the beach or into weapons tactics.
35:59These guys are under a lot of pressure,
36:02and sometimes they're making mistakes.
36:04They're afraid to make a move, some of them.
36:06We don't want that.
36:07We don't want people that are so afraid to make a move.
36:10We want to try and instill a little bit more confidence in them
36:12to make a lot of decisions on their feet,
36:14and those decisions are going to be encouraged,
36:16and that's what we want guys to be able to do.
36:17Practicing for the attack takes place in daylight where firing patterns and movements can be adjusted.
36:27Practicing for the attack takes place in daylight where firing patterns and movements can be adjusted.
36:40The difference in the students' demeanor and their composure is obvious to everyone.
36:51The practice goes well, and the night attack commences.
36:54What's the nature of a party?
37:02I don't know.
37:03I don't know.
37:33The exercise consists of an attack on a mock enemy communications position.
37:40Safety is the key.
37:54You learn that you can trust these guys and you don't have to worry about them at all.
37:58It's great to work with guys like that.
38:00The class must successfully demonstrate proper crossfire techniques, seizure and search of the camp.
38:07And finally, it's destruction.
38:09Demo team one, search the deal.
38:11Search team two.
38:13Search team two. Search that building.
38:15That satellite building.
38:17Demo team two.
38:19You've got to have 360 degree awareness.
38:21I mean, you've got all these other guys around you.
38:23All of them have guns.
38:24You have to watch out for them and you have to make sure that they're watching out for you
38:27and they're watching out for everybody else.
38:28You're not just slinging bullets everywhere.
38:30It's a controlled environment.
38:32Search team one, please.
38:33Search team one, please.
38:34Search team one, please.
38:35That's the jury.

39:20began class 234 six months earlier 17 original students along with eight rollins will graduate
39:27i remember 231 coming back from the island with their sleeves rolled up kind of straighting

39:45say today i see i see the end of the tunnel and it feels good graduating buds is only the end of
39:52the beginning to a career in the teams the trust the teamwork the commitment class 234 discovered

40:22i mean it's good because we're all going on to our teams but then again we got to leave the guys
40:27we've been working with for the past you know seven and a half months you know the guys who are our band
40:32of brothers
40:32you have to be prepared to sacrifice everything whether it's a girlfriend whether it's a job i mean
40:44i've given up so much to be here
40:46i figure if i just performed well that would pretty much take care of being a leader it's kind of like
41:02leading from the front i was performing more because i really wanted to and in turn it just
41:08helped me to be a better leader hopefully because my age i feel different because what i've been to
41:14like i think everybody feels a little more confident in themselves they know that they're capable just
41:18about anything perhaps the graduation is sweetest for rivera after failing two previous attempts at
41:29studs he is named honor man for class 234
41:33i think rivera is outstanding he's a great student he's receptive he performs his duties top-notch

42:31we're graduating buds
42:33we're not seals but what we're doing is we're given the opportunity
42:36to try out for this elite fraternity
42:38and that in itself is an honor
42:40i feel like i'm a lot closer to my goal
42:43it's still out there it's one of those things that it never stops there's always a constant pushing to be the best that there is
42:53sometimes i really didn't want the cameras to be there
42:55pre-hell week we were like
42:58oh
43:00here come the cameras
43:02oh damn it we're gonna get beat again
43:04you got used to it i'd say maybe it's like a
43:06pro baseball player or a football player or something like that
43:10like with a big crowd or something you just get used to it
43:12focus on what you need to get done if you're asking me did the cameras motivate me
43:17if they did you're probably not in the way that you would think
43:21so
43:23you
