00:00In war, there are no time-outs, no contrived popularity contests to decide life and death.
00:17This program is about the 83 young men of Class 234 and their six months long struggle to become U.S. Navy SEALs
00:26in a training course called Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL Training, or BUDS.
00:33BUDS is far more than another reality television survivor contest.
00:38There is only one rule to remember. It pays to be a winner.
00:56Class 234 begins its second day of Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training by running the obstacle course.
01:15The mood is somber. Four more students have quit.
01:19For the remaining 77 students still recovering from day one, day two promises to be no easier.
01:28I'm a little worried. I did a lot of push-ups yesterday. I'm hoping my arms will hold out.
01:37It's long to go without evolution. About eight minutes, that's about it. Everything you got.
01:40Schaefer and Class 234 have run the O course before, but today, the biggest obstacle will be time.
01:49The toughest thing is you have to mentally get through the obstacles.
01:53It's hard physically, but you can do it as long as you tell yourself you can do it.
01:58The instructors, all they want to see is that you're safe and you're fast.
02:01For me, the worst one would be that slide for life. It's hard. You're pretty much expended by the time you get to the platforms.
02:10And by the time you're on the line, your arms are spent.
02:13It takes a lot of self-motivation to get yourself down that line without falling down.
02:22It's never one circumstance that overpowers a student. It's an accumulation of events.
02:28You never know what a guy is thinking. He thinks about it, thinks about it, finally makes that decision.
02:53He's got that little bug in his head saying that, should I quit? And then that's it.
03:01The pain of day one lingers. For some, such as Demeter, yesterday's pain is today's sense of humor.
03:08Scale of one to ten, about thirteen.
03:10Fell off the balance locks today, so that was pretty bad.
03:13The instructors dislike television cameras, and Demeter's interview lasts too long to suit them.
03:19Can you talk and push them out at the same time?
03:20Their message is clear. There is only one reason to be here.
03:27The surf is higher, and the water colder than yesterday.
03:31The tired boat crews are overwhelmed.
03:34The SEAL instructors realize guidance, not punishment, is what's needed.
03:38A key for all potential SEALs is learning about their individual limits, knowing what is possible and what is not.
03:46Controlled aggression is the most important thing when you're doing this evolution.
03:50You have these waves that are coming in here.
03:53You have to get out there. You have to be aggressive, but you have to control it.
03:56You're not just paddling like a bunch of wild mad, reckless abandoned.
03:59Tomorrow night, this is going to be very important, because tomorrow night we're going to be doing night surf passage.
04:04You're not even going to see where those waves are coming from.
04:07All it takes is a little bit of fog, no moon, and it's going to be very scary.
04:13Are there any questions?
04:15Hey guys, take all this shaking and all this cold you've got going on right now, harness it, turn it into aggression.
04:22Do you think you'd rather be sitting out there on a ship right now?
04:24No.
04:24It's a good day to be in Buds. The sun is up, playing in the surf zone, having a little bit of fun.
04:31Let's do it. Let's tear it up. Let me see you guys do it.
04:34Come on, come on, you got a ball. Let's go. Fire it up.
04:37It is said that the ocean can make cowards of us all.
04:42Every SEAL knows any man can be broken physically.
04:46When Chief Taylor confronts Rivera, he chooses words, not push-ups, to communicate his displeasure.
04:52You were sitting out there, past the surf zone.
04:56Instructors are in here wondering why you guys weren't coming in while everybody else was in here.
05:00Chief Taylor, I had to instruct my guys how to dump boat. They had a hard time dumping boat.
05:04Oh, Rivera, come on, man.
05:07Mr. Burns saw that you guys made it out, and he thought, well, that's great.
05:11They made it out. They were the only ones. But you weren't the only ones.
05:13There were a bunch of boat crews that were out there, turned around, started coming back in, trying to be successful.
05:18And you guys sat outside the zone, and now you're coming in here telling me that your guys had a problem dumping boats.
05:26It's the effort that we're looking for. That's the most important thing. We want the effort.
05:29And in that instance, they weren't giving it to us.
05:32After two days of big surf, the effort becomes too much for Jackson.
05:36After yesterday, when I hurt my ankle, what I felt then wasn't really what I wanted to feel.
05:41I felt a little bit of relief that I was injured, and that really bothered me a lot.
05:46I was like, well, is this really what I want, or am I just out here for the hell of it?
05:50You know, every time you go out of the water, the warmer person in your boat is supposed to go out with you.
05:56And the other guy was about to jump in, and I said, don't worry about it, guys.
05:59Are you going this day?
06:00Yeah.
06:02That's what you want to do. Mr. Burns is standing over there.
06:06Go let him know what your intentions are, all right?
06:08Yeah.
06:08Take good luck, dude.
06:11All right.
06:11All right.
06:11All right.
06:12That very first wave just creamed us.
06:16Well, that was throw along the bottom.
06:19You know how you have to ask yourself, you know?
06:21This really seems like a good idea.
06:22You know, it's an honorable job.
06:23It's not for everybody.
06:26You lose a paddle is pretty much the same as taking the motor on the back of your boat and throwing it overboard.
06:33Hey, get over here!
06:34You know what that's going to do when you're in the surf zone, and you've got 80 pounds of gear each?
06:37It means you're going to get crunched, and you're probably going to get killed.
06:41Enjoy your class.
06:42You're cold?
06:43I'm very uncomfortable.
06:44I'm very uncomfortable.
06:44Okay, you're very uncomfortable.
06:46You're very cold.
06:47I don't think I can do this for the next six months or whatever.
06:52You feel like you gave it your best shot?
06:54I really do.
06:55That's the most important thing, right?
06:56Yeah.
06:57Good luck to you.
06:58All right.
06:58Take care.
06:59All right, gents.
07:07You guys do 50 meters.
07:09To me, it's the same thing as 25.
07:11Okay?
07:12You've got a goal that you have to meet.
07:14You want to stay in this training.
07:16You're going to have to do this swim.
07:17The key to it is to stay relaxed.
07:21No matter how cold you are, no matter how tired you are, you've got to stay relaxed and glide under there.
07:26The evolution is simple.
07:31Jump in, front flip, and swim.
07:33It might seem a relief to swim in 80-degree water, but going 50 meters while holding your breath can create apprehension, and there is no hiding it.
07:42Phase 1 is a nine-week course intended to expose each student's commitment to endure hardship through physical stress.
07:53SEALs believe that if a man cannot withstand the stress of a beach or swimming pool in Coronado, California, in peacetime,
08:00he will never survive in the conditions of sea, air, and land combat.
08:06All right, next group.
08:07Hands up.
08:08Get up.
08:09Get up.
08:10Get up.
08:13Do the red frost thing four to six minutes before you start with the brain damage on an average person.
08:18These guys are healthier than average.
08:21Hands up.
08:21Get back here.
08:26Take them up.
08:27If you check the clock, you'll see they're really only underwater for 40 seconds.
08:31If they're passing out, it's some kind of reflex response.
08:34They just lock up.
08:35They're all spun up, standing here on the side of the pool, a little anxiety.
08:38But I'm not concerned unless that guy is not breathing for two minutes straight.
08:43Come back.
08:44Come back to the light.
08:46Or don't go to the light.
08:50Roll over.
08:51Roll over.
08:52Nobody has gone beyond 30, 40 seconds.
08:55Absolutely.
08:56Length of time, not breathing.
08:58What's your name?
08:59A-2-3-Pachelli.
09:01What's the name of the instructor that just saved your life?
09:04I don't know.
09:04Look back over there.
09:05Who is that?
09:06Instructor Hoy.
09:08Thank you for saving your life.
09:10Thank you, Instructor Hoy.
09:11Okay, stand up.
09:14If you'd been standing over here, you would have been able to see him go out, eyes roll up, air come out of his mouth.
09:20He was out underwater.
09:22And the instructor that was running him was heads up, spotted that right away.
09:25And actually, he was the one that brought him up.
09:27But he touched the wall, so he passes.
09:31Breathe.
09:34Get on your knees.
09:35Up on your knees.
09:37You're seeing the average right here.
09:39Nothing's unusual.
09:40We're getting maybe a little bit more failures than we were used to getting.
09:44Hey, hey, hey.
09:44Hands on these.
09:45Might have something to do with the temperature, the day they had.
09:49But the amount of people that are passing out, it's the same.
09:52Okay.
09:53How many guys feel like they just went over a hurdle today, they didn't really realize they were going to be able to go over?
09:58Twice.
10:00All right.
10:01You just proved to your bodies, through your mind, that you can push yourself a lot further than you thought possible.
10:07All right.
10:08That's the first hurdle.
10:09Feels good to get over a hurdle, doesn't it?
10:11Good job.
10:13Good job.
10:15By the end of day two, ten more students quit.
10:23For the 70 men remaining in class 234, the line between survival and failure is becoming more pronounced hour by hour.
10:32Thirteen days from now, three weeks after phase one starts, more students will cross the line, leaving behind only the committed.
10:45One, two, three, four.
10:47In the pre-dawn 53-degree chill of day three, four more students quit, leaving 66 students to face another day.
10:56This routine will build until hell week, six days of non-stop, 24-hour, unrelenting hardship.
11:03Get a mark man sucks, you don't want him to have to know your name, but that just means I've got to put out 110%.
11:13It's tough for every day.
11:15Only easy day was yesterday, but I'm here and I'm ready to do it.
11:18You know, I mean, it's two weeks.
11:20Two weeks and a long day.
11:21That's all it is, you know?
11:22This is the Smurf crew, what's left of it.
11:25Lost two this morning, one yesterday.
11:27Who was in the Smurf crew here that you lost?
11:30Albers yesterday, Goodbye and Chaney today.
11:33Chaney left too?
11:34Chaney just left.
11:37Didn't want to be here.
11:38Water's cold, and it's starting to chafe on my chest and rub my nipples off.
11:43Capable fix that.
11:45What's your goal today?
11:46I survived just like every day.
11:49One day at a time, one evolution at a time.
11:53I'm still standing.
11:55Excuse me.
11:56Somebody go get the life jacket from the battle.
12:00I've always wanted to be a SEAL since about 7th or 8th grade.
12:06I don't know, the idea of carrying a gun and killing bad guys sounded fun to me.
12:09One, two, three, four.
12:12I want to be creeping in someone else's backyard with a creeping of mine.
12:16You know, I love my country, but I want to do things that people don't want to talk about,
12:20but know that it's done.
12:24Shoemaker is in last place.
12:26The focus of an instructor the class respectfully calls Joey the Cat,
12:31so called for his skill at exposing a student's weakness and toying with it incessantly.
12:36The Cat is an equal opportunity instructor.
12:53No failure will go unnoticed.
12:55If I were to actually look at my speedometer, we are actually going below zero.
12:59If you cannot pass a full mile time run now,
13:01you're not going to be able to pass a full mile time run three months from now.
13:06Simple math would tell me you're not going to make it.
13:10Uh-oh, Strain makes a move.
13:11Strain makes a neck and neck.
13:12It's neck and neck.
13:13Strain and Schaefer.
13:13Strain and Schaefer.
13:14Schaefer pulls ahead.
13:15Get up there, Strain.
13:16Strain pulls back because he is mentally weak.
13:18Strain, you do not want to be in this good squad.
13:21Sometimes they'll forget to write what your diagnosis is.
13:24If you notice, your death is blank.
13:26Not every evolution is physical,
13:29but even under calmer circumstances, anything can happen.
13:33Every student has been wet and cold all day, every day.
13:36Here, open.
13:38Open.
13:40Swallow.
13:43Swallow.
13:44Out the side door, out the side door, move, side door.
13:51On the third straight day of surf passage, boat crews continue to plownd it.
14:01Whoa!
14:02With a night surf passage evolution scheduled for later tonight,
14:06instructors worry that the darkness will cause injuries.
14:09Oh, they fell over.
14:11One, ten!
14:14Go!
14:14Two, ten!
14:15Go!
14:16Go!
14:17Three, ten!
14:19Go!
14:20Go!
14:21Go!
14:22One, ten!
14:23Go!
14:25Go!
14:26Go!
14:26All right.
14:27We have a little bit more procedure going on.
14:29Races between boat crews continues
14:31to determine which crews are working together and which are not.
14:35Legg and his boat crew are winners for the third day in a row.
14:39It's the leg boat crew eight, standing by, man rigged, ready for sea.
14:42First place.
14:43Who are you on, Strucker and Donald?
14:44All right.
14:45Well, guess what?
14:46It does pay to be a winner,
14:47so you take your boat crew and take seats on the starboard side of your boat.
14:51We won the surf passage drag race.
14:54Got a bunch of strong guys in the boat that pull hard.
14:56They all listen to what they're supposed to do.
15:00It's the beginning.
15:01Boat crew seven, standing by, man.
15:02Ready, ready for sea.
15:03Okay, second place.
15:06Nothing bad, but you know what second place is, right?
15:10First loser.
15:11There you go.
15:12We can beat Legg.
15:13Fucking bastard.
15:15He just got lucky.
15:19Up.
15:20I'm doing all right.
15:22Stay in arms.
15:23Stay in arms, man.
15:25I have a boat on over my head.
15:28Boat crew nine, standing by, man rigged, ready for sea.
15:31Okay, Mr. Shoemaker.
15:32You guys see what Boat crew one's doing over there?
15:35Sitting down, taking a break.
15:37You know what they're going to do?
15:38They're going to sit this race out.
15:39Yeah.
15:40Because they put out, paddled hard, and got in here.
15:43You guys want to take a break, put out,
15:45and you win like they do, you'll get a break.
15:47100 extended arm push-ups for coming in last.
15:50Begin.
15:51Be up.
15:52Down.
15:53One.
15:53Down.
15:54Two.
15:54Down.
15:55Three.
15:55Can you do 20 perfect push-ups?
15:57Yeah, sure.
15:58You can do it.
15:59Yeah.
16:00Okay.
16:00Get in.
16:00Seven.
16:01Eight.
16:02Down, nine.
16:03Down, boom.
16:04I want to see it.
16:05Don't do a push-up unless it's perfect.
16:07You ready?
16:08Drop down, give me 20.
16:11I did do this sacrifice.
16:14Something's the matter with Mr. Shoemaker right now.
16:16I don't know if it's his head or what,
16:18but he's not all there.
16:20I mean, I was looking at him.
16:21I said, Mr. Shoemaker, what's going on?
16:23Is there anything that matters?
16:24He said, no, I'm fine.
16:26He's got the bad decision bug.
16:29Down.
16:29Up.
16:30Down.
16:31Down.
16:32Up.
16:33Nine.
16:34Three drop.
16:38You guys understand why you're doing this?
16:40It's about the same thing as going out on a mission
16:42and getting caught by the enemy.
16:44You've got to pay the price, right?
16:46Yeah.
16:47So therefore, you came in last place,
16:49which means you technically got caught by the enemy,
16:52which right now is me.
16:54When was the last time you did push-ups, sir?
16:56After the run.
16:56Oh, after the run.
16:58So that was about an hour ago, right?
17:00Yeah.
17:01And you're telling me that you cannot touch your chest
17:03and you cannot get push-ups right now.
17:05Recover.
17:06Drop.
17:06Recover the proper way.
17:10Recover the proper way.
17:13Recover.
17:13No.
17:16Drop.
17:18Recover the proper way.
17:19Both feet at the same time.
17:21Recover.
17:22There you go.
17:23Okay.
17:25You paid for your mistake?
17:27Yeah, sir.
17:27It's a boy.
17:28Disappear.
17:28Yeah.
17:31On your mark, just get set.
17:32Recover.
17:32Five, four, three, two, one, zero.
17:41Almost.
17:43Almost got him.
17:46SEAL instructors are the gatekeepers for the SEAL community.
17:50They have all graduated from BUDS.
17:52Booyah, Chief Taylor.
17:54They know that good students will always rise to the event.
17:58I got dropped.
17:59I put my knife.
18:00It was dull.
18:00That's what Instructor Hoy said.
18:03Was it?
18:04That's a negative.
18:06This is why we have inspections, gentlemen.
18:08Your head goes through the hole.
18:11Turn around, drop down, push him out.
18:13Fox, you're not mad, are you?
18:15Negative.
18:17They're going to instruct us on how to swim underneath the surf,
18:20the waves, and come back in.
18:22They'll get tossed around.
18:23Got to make sure you stay with your swim buddies.
18:25Now, you have to stick with your buddy, right?
18:27Is that the main thing you're thinking of?
18:29Negative.
18:29Just thinking about staying in the push-up position.
18:34Go evolution at a time.
18:36Right now, I'm in a push-up position.
18:37I worry about that right now.
18:43They were told to dive under the waves.
18:46Some of the guys are afraid of that, so they swim over them.
18:48That's not the right technique, because later on, they do some other things where they're going to silhouette themselves by doing that.
18:53This is very easy for them, but we're going to change that in a second.
18:57There's always a tool or technique that we can do to make them do exactly what we want.
19:02The fire is so cool.
19:04Let's go.
19:05Let's go.
19:07All right, people.
19:08Let's go.
19:09Keep that sound.
19:10Keep that sound secure.
19:14Now tell me what I told you guys about going under the waves.
19:17I said go under the waves so it doesn't make sure that we're bodies severed, because we're practicing to be sealed, and we didn't even conceal ourselves.
19:23You're going to get a second chance now, but it's going to be a little bit different.
19:26Take off your rubber.
19:30One minute.
19:31Scoot around the rubber.
19:32One minute.
19:33Get undressed now.
19:39Get out there and get a swimmer pull.
19:43Once you start getting to a point where your body temperature starts going down,
19:46you start getting numb, and you know if you do things right and get out of it,
19:51it kind of motivates you, and it really works really well with the students
19:55because they don't like being cold.
19:57Can't blame them.
19:58Cold.
19:59A little chilly.
20:00Moving fast keeps you warm, though.
20:03Not really.
20:09Swimming is what I've been really strong at my whole life,
20:11so it's part of why I wanted to be a SEAL.
20:15It's a job that I can do what I like to do and get paid for it.
20:21It's pretty cold.
20:22Have you ever held ice in the palm of your hand and just held it there,
20:25so it stings?
20:27Cold like that.
20:29As you see, it doesn't look like there's too many warm bodies out here, is there?
20:32Really?
20:33So next time I tell you, go underneath the wave,
20:35why don't you go underneath the wave?
20:36Nope.
20:37Move!
20:38Move!
20:40You don't have to do anything about it.
20:42Mother Nature takes care of it all.
20:43She supplies the water, the cold air.
20:46All you got to do is something to get in it.
20:48Five, six, seven.
20:51Day three ends early, as the class prepares for surf passage later tonight.
20:55Nine.
20:56Four more students have quit, but most students are too cold to notice or care.
21:01Somebody move!
21:03After their dinner break, class 234 will be back in the ocean for their third time today.
21:08As night surf passage begins, it is the instructors, not the students, who seem anxious.
21:20Hopefully, uh, one of us will get hurt.
21:23I don't think so.
21:24The waves aren't that big.
21:25But, uh, just can't wait to get this evolution over so I can go to bed.
21:30From Missouri.
21:31Where about?
21:32Southeast Park.
21:33Little town called Williamsville.
21:35Uh, you been in the Navy for a while?
21:37Four and a half years.
21:38And what were you doing before you got here?
21:40I was stationed on a ship in Yakuza, Japan for three years.
21:43And that kind of bored you, huh?
21:45Yeah, pretty well sucks.
21:47I was on a ship for two years.
21:48I'd rather freeze out here than be on a ship.
21:50I hate those damn ships.
21:52It's going all right so far.
21:54Oakry's doing well.
21:56Gonna make it through Hellwick this time?
21:58We got you.
21:59The question to Rivera is not an idle comment.
22:02It is a reminder not to become complacent.
22:07Although Rivera is universally respected and popular with both instructors and his classmates,
22:14as the ranking enlisted man, he is not yet demonstrating the leadership qualities expected by phase one instructors.
22:21The surf has dropped in size, and boat crews seem to have more trouble finding their place on the beach than they do paddling in the surf.
22:34In between races, Instructor R instructs for a lack of attention to detail.
22:43A reminder that the ocean at night cannot be taken for granted.
22:46XYZ PDQ.
22:48XYZ PDQ.
22:49You know what that means?
22:51Your fly is undone. Button it.
22:53Hurry up.
22:57Hurry up.
22:59Get that boat squared away.
23:02Every single crew here is sad.
23:05There's only one boat crew, boat crew eight down on the end, who earned the right to be sitting down.
23:11Because you know what second place is, right?
23:14First losers.
23:15First losers.
23:16It pays to be a winner.
23:19Why were your last ones in?
23:21That boat got flipped.
23:23Sorry, you're not doing this race.
23:25You're gonna stay up and play games with me.
23:28Go!
23:29Go!
23:30Go, sir!
23:31Rivera and boat crew six have not performed consistently during the past three days.
23:36No!
23:37Because he has already failed BUDS twice, instructors are waiting to see if Rivera can improve his leadership performance.
23:43Get your back strength!
23:44Get your back strength!
23:46Feet!
23:47Feet!
23:48Feet!
23:49The message is clear.
23:52Either get motivated and lead, or find a different job somewhere else.
23:58Show me that something that I said to you sunk in.
24:02Who are you going to show us to Rob and Son?
24:03We kept him in the last place.
24:04We got dumped out there and it was our fault.
24:05We weren't straight, so we paid for it.
24:06Right now I'm preparing myself to listen to my coxswain and get it together, work as a team,
24:09so that we can get out there and survive.
24:10All right, you had your chance to catch your breath.
24:11All right, now it's time to show.
24:12You've been standing here.
24:13These guys are going to line up and race.
24:14It's going to be your turn.
24:15You're in the driver's seat this time.
24:16I don't want any excuses.
24:21Out and back!
24:22You better be in the top row.
24:23Here we go.
24:28Let's go sec!
24:32Give me your chance and just just take it all.
24:36You could get between these guys so you would have to run myself.
24:37If you're feeling you would have to come.
24:38It was definitely akącoxswain and think you didn't need to be a hero going.
24:41I don't want any excuses.
24:43Out and back.
24:44You better be in the top three.
24:45You got some wrongs.
24:47Down.
24:48Up.
24:51Down.
24:53Up.
24:54Two.
24:55Pearson, you having a hard time holding that boat up?
24:57Negative.
24:58You getting the support you need from your boat crews?
25:00Yes, I am.
25:01Really?
25:01You're not carrying an unusually large side of the boat all by your little lonesome?
25:06Negative.
25:07So what you're telling me is all these guys are putting out and you're not?
25:10Is that what you're telling me?
25:14Negative.
25:14You sure you want to be here?
25:16Yes, I do.
25:16Are you absolutely sure you want to be here?
25:18I'm positive.
25:19Then get that boat off your head.
25:21Starting over for McPherson.
25:23Down.
25:24Are you sure you want to be here?
25:25With determination, he's saying hoo-yah, while the other guy directly behind him skates.
25:30He's not the only one who knows it, but everybody else in that boat crew knows it.
25:34And those names surface.
25:37Gaines.
25:38Yes.
25:38You're the slowest one up and the slowest one down.
25:41Why should the rest of your boat crew pay?
25:42Because you don't want to put out.
25:44They shouldn't.
25:44Huh?
25:45They shouldn't.
25:46They shouldn't?
25:46No.
25:47Then are you sure you want to be here?
25:48Yes.
25:49Okay, well then start showing me.
25:51Yeah.
25:51Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:52Feet.
25:53Feet.
25:54Feet.
25:54Feet.
25:55What is wrong with you, Gaines?
25:57I think you're feeling a little sorry for yourself.
26:01What day is this into training?
26:03Third day.
26:04Day three.
26:04Okay, quit feeling sorry for yourself, adjust your hat and square it away.
26:10Poke your chest out, stand tall.
26:13There you go.
26:15That's the position of a man right there.
26:17No!
26:17No!
26:18No!
26:18I want a six-word phrase that made it possible for you to be sitting right where you're sitting
26:24right now.
26:24No!
26:24Get your back straight!
26:26No!
26:27No!
26:28No!
26:28No!
26:29No!
26:30No!
26:31No!
26:32No!
26:33No!
26:34No!
26:35It pays to be a winner!
26:36Oh, yeah.
26:37Hootah!
26:38Hootah!
26:39Hootah!
26:44Back on it.
26:45Back on it.
26:46Went in four races.
26:47Out of about, I think, eight or nine of them.
26:49And, uh, since we had gotten first, we got to go off the beach early.
26:54Getting out of bed, I asked my wife if she'd give me an extra push in the morning to help
26:58me out.
26:59When you're 29, you start to feel everything.
27:02You're not going to pass out on me in the classroom again?
27:05No, I did some eating last night.
27:07I used to be hard.
27:08I wasn't eating enough for the amount of calories you burn and the activity.
27:12Okay, uh, get your, go get your stuff.
27:22Uh, we just had another DOR.
27:24Uh, just came up to me and said he's had enough.
27:27And I sent him back there to, uh, fill out his DOR sheet.
27:31One, two, three.
27:32One.
27:33One, two, three.
27:34Two.
27:35One, two, three.
27:36Two.
27:37One, two, three.
27:38Three.
27:39One, two, three.
27:40I know the difference between little owls and real injuries, okay?
27:45Maybe you think you're injured because this is the most pain you've ever felt in your 19
27:48years of existence or however old you are, but you're not by my standards, alright?
27:52Yeah.
27:53If you come up to me and tell me you got lower back pain, you don't want to do the rest
27:57of the O course, fine, that's a training timeout if you want to hide in that thing, okay?
28:00But sooner or later, it's going to catch up to you.
28:02So if you want this program, then you better man up and start doing the job.
28:06I guarantee you, I know who you are.
28:09We all know who you are.
28:10We're going to find you.
28:11To survive at Bud's or in war, misery must be compartmentalized, pain denied.
28:17On day four, it's becoming critical to maintain focus.
28:21Too much thinking can overwhelm even the strongest willpower.
28:25I learned last class you can't get attached to people because you never know who's going
28:31to go and who's going to stay.
28:33Just hope I'm on a month and stays.
28:36I'm going home.
28:37What happened?
28:38I just got some family issues that's been going on for a while.
28:43Last night, you know, it kind of came to a head on the phone.
28:46I mean, you figure an opportune place, an opportune time.
28:49It just ain't in it mentally now.
28:51If it was ever a time for me to quit, it would have been yesterday.
28:53You know, I passed out.
28:54I was hurt.
28:55I was sick.
28:56I was dragging ass, but I stuck it out.
28:59I was here.
29:00I had my chance.
29:01Just issues came up.
29:04It's called the elephant walk.
29:06The students hate it.
29:08No matter how the rubber IBS raft is carried, it hurts.
29:12The head, the shoulders, the rubbing against the legs.
29:16It's an irritating and aggravating exercise that eventually will turn into a race between boat crews.
29:22It's an evolution that never seems to end.
29:26I wonder how long it will last.
29:30Maybe it will last all week.
29:33Maybe it will last all month.
29:35Maybe it never stops.
29:37What I'm trying to do is get inside their heads a little bit.
29:40I try to remind them also that this thing could go on and on and on.
29:45And what it is designed to do is separate the men from the boys.
29:49The men are going to, they don't care.
29:51I wonder what my mother is doing.
29:53I wonder what my friends are doing.
29:55But the weak minded ones will succumb to that and they start doing some soul searching.
29:59They let that little man inside their head speak to them that says,
30:02I can't.
30:03And I'm only interested in the ones who can.
30:05I don't know if I'm cut out for this train.
30:08The bell sounds and eight more men ring out of class 234.
30:2221 DORs and two medical roles in three days reduces the class size by a third.
30:28The muster is down to 61 students.
30:31As the instructors intended from day one, more and more students are questioning their motives for being here.
30:38It just rang out, class 234.
30:41It was fun.
30:42It was a good experience.
30:43I really enjoyed it.
30:44But I think in order to be a Navy SEAL, you got to want it more than anything else that you want.
30:49And willing to give up everything else to attain that goal.
30:52And I didn't want it that much.
30:54Tuesday actually wasn't quite as bad as Monday.
30:57But just the days consecutive, my body was just speed.
31:00I was thinking, you know, this is really what I want to do, but it's just a job.
31:05You know, it's the Navy, and it's my occupation.
31:08And my family needs to come first to me.
31:11And that was more important to me than being a SEAL.
31:22It's not that far.
31:23One mile is 1,650 yards.
31:24We've done 1,000 already.
31:26So, you know, that's our last evolution of the day.
31:31It is the coldest evolution of the week.
31:36A one-mile bay swim in 53-degree water without a wetsuit.
31:43The instructors tell the class it's mind over matter.
31:46If they don't mind, it won't matter.
31:49But the humor for Thursday is wearing thin.
31:52Everybody is tired of being cold.
31:55Talk to me!
31:56Geary, Holly, swim pair 15!
32:00Geary, Holly, swim pair 15!
32:0215, go!
32:03The instructors know the cold is miserable.
32:06Their main concern is how long each swim pair is in the water.
32:10What is the matter with you?
32:12I can't take that fin anymore.
32:15Keep first pair 13!
32:18Well, Willens, take your fin off, and I'll take it.
32:22You can finish the swim with one fin.
32:24Or you can quit.
32:28Take your fin off.
32:29Make up your mind.
32:30Give your fin off, give it to me.
32:31Give off the fin or quit.
32:33Daddy can't breathe!
32:35There you go!
32:37Just remember, you've got to do this for the next six months.
32:41Get out of here.
32:42You've got two arms, you've got another leg.
32:44Use them.
32:45Don't be a baby.
32:47Go swim.
32:49Go swim.
32:50I can't do that.
32:53Go over to a swim pair over there.
32:55When they check in, hook up with them.
32:56What are you doing?
32:57I can't breathe wise.
32:59Who are you?
33:00This is Carol.
33:01Alright, get over here Carol.
33:03Who are you?
33:04Roger.
33:05What number are you?
33:06Swim pair 2.
33:07Swim pair 2 is now, what's your name?
33:09Greenican.
33:10You two go.
33:11Greenican is now with Roger.
33:13Get her leg up.
33:14Get her leg up.
33:15Swim pair 2.
33:16I have their swim buddy.
33:17You're shaking.
33:18If you're shaking, you're not hyped out.
33:19I can't keep my legs.
33:20Why?
33:21They're locked up.
33:22Then use your damn arms.
33:23Come over here and hang on to the boat.
33:24You guys keep going.
33:25Sit up straight.
33:26The early days of the boat.
33:27hypothermia are mental confusion, listless response, and an inability to respond to simple questions.
33:48Hang on to the boat.
33:50Hang on to the boat.
33:53What do you want?
33:54Are you out of here or what?
33:56Because if you're not, you're going to go swim.
33:58I can't swim.
33:59If you can't swim, then you're out of here.
34:01I can't swim anymore.
34:02Why?
34:03It's too cold.
34:05Instructor Pat Stone and Mad Max watch the students closely, but no one yet is showing
34:12signs of hypothermia.
34:14Are you going to breathe for me?
34:16Sit down.
34:17Sit down.
34:18The cold is simply too much for some to tolerate.
34:23Take stroke and glide.
34:24Underwater recovery stroke.
34:26Where are you at?
34:28I'm in the bay.
34:31Okay.
34:32What bay are you in?
34:33Excuse me?
34:34What bay are you in?
34:36Where's that?
34:38What bay?
34:40B-A-Y.
34:41Come on, I don't know.
34:42Hurry up.
34:43Hopkins get moving.
34:44What's your problem?
34:45You keep an eye on him.
34:51Okay, well, do what Doc tells you.
35:05Hey, where are you?
35:07Well, alright.
35:08Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
35:12This guy's had enough of the cold.
35:13He's cramped up.
35:14It's just not for him anymore.
35:16He wants to move on and do something else.
35:17He's done.
35:18Go back up there, Alfredo.
35:19You are warm enough to continue this swim, Evans.
35:22Put your fins on, put your belt on, and jump in the water.
35:28You and Hopkins are going to be swimming, buddy.
35:30What are you saying?
35:31Are you done?
35:32Okay.
35:33You ready to join somebody out there to finish the swim?
35:36I'm done.
35:37You got 25 meters!
35:40Start kicking it out!
35:4225 meters!
35:44Relax.
35:45Carol, I think you're going to be alright.
35:51Roger, we had a 96.7 and a 97.3.
35:56Over.
35:57Water, they come in right now.
36:00I tried to get them back into the water, and they said no way.
36:04Roger that.
36:05What about the medical guy?
36:07The medical guy was seen in medical this morning with pneumonia.
36:12They started him on antibiotics, and I'm just going to keep him.
36:15Over.
36:16Take him in order.
36:17Tell him to finish.
36:18He's going to see any other fish.
36:19Excellent.
36:20Carol.
36:21If you like that jacket on, you can finish the swim on.
36:26I'm done.
36:27What?
36:28I'm done.
36:29You're done?
36:30Why?
36:31You think I'm going to let you die?
36:33The boat's right there, Carter!
36:36You better stay with your swim, buddy!
36:38You have pneumonia.
36:39You have pneumonia.
36:40And every time you get in the water, you can't breathe, and you can't train.
36:44Chances are they might med roll you up, med drop maybe, I don't know.
36:48Hey, numbnuts!
36:49Max!
36:50Get over there!
36:51Get over there!
36:52Get over there!
36:53Get over there!
36:54Get over here!
36:55Get over here!
36:56Get over here!
36:57Get over here!
36:58The last swim pair to finish are Buck and Potter.
37:01Mad Max recognizes the early signs of Potter becoming disoriented.
37:05He's been in the water for an hour, which is towards the upper limits of our swim.
37:10So if he had been swimming hard, then he would be done probably 20 minutes ago.
37:14Scoot back, scoot back, sit down, scoot back, scoot back.
37:18And I don't know how cold he is right now, so we're going to go and check him out.
37:23What's going on?
37:25Hey, Carter.
37:26What?
37:27You're alright.
37:28You're back.
37:29You're finished the swim.
37:30You want to zoom us in?
37:32Get us in?
37:33Cover up with this, dummy.
37:43There.
37:44You look good.
37:49Are you cold too?
37:51I'm doing alright.
37:52What's six times six?
37:54Six times six is 36.
37:56It's Dr. Pat's door.
37:57Are you warming up?
37:58Oh yeah.
38:01Six times three.
38:08Hurry up. Hurry up. Hurry up. Hurry up.
38:11Hurry up.
38:12Get off the boat.
38:13Alright, get it off. Get out of here. Get up there.
38:15Get this shower cap off of here.
38:16Give me that thing.
38:17Get out of here.
38:18Hey buck.
38:19Will you grab him?
38:21On the last day of week one, 234 is back in the water.
38:24Every boat crew has been reorganized.
38:26Eleven more students have quit and the class size is reduced to 50.
38:30This evolution is an IBS rock portage.
38:31Basically what we're looking for here is they have to be able to overcome fear, first of
38:35all, because it's scary.
38:36On the last day of week one, 234 is back in the water.
38:41Every boat crew has been reorganized.
38:44Eleven more students have quit, and the class size is reduced to 50.
38:49This evolution is IBS rock portage.
38:52Basically what we're looking for here is they have to be able to overcome fear, first of all, because it's scary.
38:58You've got big surf out there, you've got rocks, you've got the potential for injury.
39:02And the only way to successfully accomplish rock portage is by working for a team.
39:08This is the most dangerous thing we've been doing so far.
39:14About 90% of the evolutions that we do in first phase are all based off the teamwork.
39:19Some of them do have tactical applications, but a majority of them are just designed to get a group of guys or a bunch of individuals
39:27working together for a common goal in the face of adversity.
39:32Let's say, for instance, the Zodiac went down with its engine.
39:39We could possibly have a portage with paddles on the rocks.
39:42It's the name of the game.
39:44It's where we've come in where they wouldn't expect us to come in.
39:46So that's what this is all about.
39:48Hurry up!
39:49Leg's boat crew has changed personnel, but they continue to be among the winners.
39:54Faces at Bud's changed, but the lessons remain the same.
40:00We were the first ones.
40:01We took charge.
40:02We're the best.
40:03That's why we're the winners.
40:04We worked together.
40:05We worked together.
40:05We were aggressive.
40:07We were aggressive and we worked hard.
40:09Ah, last minute.
40:09We worked hard.
40:10Second place is the first losers.
40:12Okay, so you're in the water and you know you're between the beach and the boat, right?
40:17What do you do?
40:19Get the hell out of there.
40:20Get out of there.
40:20Let me give you an example.
40:22I'm in Puerto Rico, okay?
40:24We've got weapons boxes in the back of the Sea Fox.
40:27The Sea Fox starts to swamp, okay?
40:302,000 pounds worth of weapons boxes are sliding back my direction,
40:34and I pin myself between the entrance to that thing and the boxes,
40:37thinking that I'm going to save these weapons.

40:43Weapons are lost.
40:44We die for them.
40:45However, you put your body there, it's done for.
40:48Got it?
40:49You do not get in between the boat and the rocks.
40:54I don't know how many times I've got to tell you guys that.

41:41But all that happened is that the kneecap just got pressed up against the rock and shifted and then shifted back.
41:47Painful, but no injury.
41:48This week was real kick in the ass.
41:58Every day, it got harder.
