00:30We're coming round to meet you a long way on.
00:42Across 20 years and three incredible adventures, we've travelled to some of the farthest flung corners of the world.
00:48This is us on the road, Charlie. This is us on the way, man.
00:51Yet we've never properly explored the countries on our own doorstep.
00:55OK, here we go. Into Europe. Let's do it.
01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbours.
01:05Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle,
01:12down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:21And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:28My bike's making funny noise.
01:32Riding alongside them on the third motorcycle are cameraman Claudio and Max.
01:36And the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:40Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:51Wow!
01:53And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
02:16It's so beautiful here.
02:23It's unbelievable the scenery we've seen since we got into Norway.
02:28The scale, I didn't expect it to be so monumental.
02:32It's Valhalla, you know, the land of the gods.
02:39We're well underway now, having made it from Scotland all the way to the Norwegian fjords.
02:44We want to reach the Lofoten Islands in the Arctic Circle in time for Midsummer's Eve.
02:50First though, we've got a two-day ride through the mountains, heading for the city of Trondheim, with an overnight camp in Fortun.
03:00This is a tricky old road.
03:02I'll shout if it can't count.
03:03It's very high up over this wall.
03:04It's a very low wall as well, I mean, you know.
03:05Just enough to catapult you straight off.
03:06I think the bike would be okay, but you know, you'd go straight over.
03:09When you never question the doubts in your mind.
03:10When the distance grows, but the other...
03:11Hey guys, look out, somebody's trying to overtake.
03:12Nutcase!
03:13What?
03:14Oh, f*** me, there's a car.
03:15Okay, it's coming.
03:16Okay, it's coming.
03:17It's coming.
03:18Yeah, it's a very low wall as well, I mean, you know.
03:19Just enough to catapult you straight off.
03:21I think the bike would be okay, but you know, you'd go straight over.
03:26Oh, f*** me, there's a car.
03:27Okay, it's coming.
03:28Hey guys, look out, somebody's trying to overtake.
03:29I'm not catapult.
03:30What?
03:31Oh, f*** me, there's a car.
03:32Okay, it's coming.
03:33Yeah, it's like overtaking.
03:34Look at that, he's all over the place.
03:35Oh, I'd really like to get away from this guy, he's dangerous.
03:38Jesus!
03:39That was close.
03:40case what oh me there's a car okay it's coming yeah it's like overtaking look at that he's all
03:47over the place oh i'd really like to get away from this guy he's dangerous jesus that was close

11:34tala tamma laba ding dong tamma laba ding dong never know where to show it never
11:44we're going to trondheim where we'll catch a bow up the norwegian coast so we can make it to these
11:48beautiful islands in time for midsummer's eve this ride should take us past one of the best examples
11:54of a wooden viking church our first challenge is to get through the road closure area before
12:008 00 a.m or else we won't get over the hill and we have to go all the way around the long way around
12:06wait a minute
12:08i don't mind what i mean but i can't think what it is
12:11ronheim trondheim and we're off we can head off to our little adventures

12:35this is the tinderbergen pass which will take us up through the mountains
12:38another must-do road for a biker just ticking these boxes
12:46there are some famous biking roads here so there's an element of a pilgrimage and to experience for
12:53ourselves it's really nice
13:04oh okay oh yeah they're quite sharp aren't they
13:08nice lovely hoppity up up we're so high up already look at that wow beautiful
13:24these old bikes you've just got to really get them and gonna be in the right gear you have to
13:36really write them you know yeah so nice i love that about it and it's not so forgiving are they
13:42anymore no you have to be more precise
13:51oh this is delightful i don't want to stop
13:57one of the nicest pieces of tarmac this actually that was good wasn't it
14:00chilly isn't it chilly i've got my little summer gloves on but snowing snowing
14:17that's all we need oh it's really snowing
14:20i didn't anticipate this when we woke up this morning i mean come on norway
14:39we're gonna try and catch up with the others and join them in trondheim
14:48some sort of mad max experience
14:55uh-oh has he gone down the side of the hill
14:59hi we are stuck here and uh we try to pull it out okay do you want me to help
15:06okay you ready
15:17well these roads are clearly slippery i just hope the boys are okay
15:24i'm so glad we can see it's beautiful up here
15:27oh there's something on the road cyclists no way no way get out of here oh two of them wow yeah
15:41good for them hi guys just when you think you're sort of hardcore you pass a couple of cyclists
15:48oh
15:55holy moly this is a lot of snow
15:59it's getting worse we're doing a very good job out there in the lead you and
16:04well i hope you're just a bit nervous of ice so i hope you don't mind i'm tiptoeing around no no no no
16:12my beard feels like it's freezing up
16:18well boys well this is um this is certainly as as extreme as we want it to be
16:24my hands are freezing you want to stop
16:42oh
16:43get my warm gloves out here this is the coldest we've been on this trip
16:52freezing i mean i think it's
16:56might actually be freezing hello
17:00what a road huh yeah it's crazy it's incredible what a cool idea to get a coffee out here in the
17:07wilderness oh seriously the saviors i can't believe i didn't put these on this morning what an idiot
17:26very good thank you thank you very much
17:28oh my gosh it's cold oh
17:48okay yeah i'm all right i'm right i'm right okay let's get the bike oh yeah the fuel is going out
17:58oh no 23 oh shit let's get the fuel goes wait wait wait let's get something under the side
18:06stand first okay okay do you two no no don't touch it don't touch it it's just gonna be clean it's
18:14going okay okay okay okay that's a little reservoir for the for the carburettor okay
18:21whoo you all right charlie look at that you okay yeah it's all fine no it's fine we're so slow motion
18:29it's like you're gonna roll all the way down the hill
18:32okay here we go see if i can get it started
18:37all right
18:51all right oh oh that's better thank you guys we were so optimistic and unrealistic about what the weather
19:00would be because we didn't really spend any time looking into it but it's very very northern part of
19:05the world of course it's going to be cold and wet what did we really expect
19:09should we get to the church i hope it's warm
19:16just come out of the mist oh look at that down down down to the land down
19:21getting better the weather guys no it definitely feels warmer oh look here's the here's the road
19:27closure thanks guys imagine if he turned us back imagine if he said nope back over the top
19:34sheeps beep beep beep we've got to get down the mountain
19:55beautiful church but what i love is all these shingles look like dragons oh yeah look at the door look at the
20:02size of it they were big these these vikings back in the day weren't they they're huge
20:11oh my gosh that is beautiful isn't it
20:20the painting is really interesting isn't it the way that's just painted on the wood like that
20:24beautiful not such a good view from these seats those are the real cheap seats over there
20:33this church was built in 1158 in the very transition between the viking age and the christian part of
20:39the middle ages so they've still kept a lot of their protective symbols from the viking ages like the
20:44dragon's heads that you see on the outside of the church to sort of protect them from evil spirits and such
20:54such a pretty place
20:58made me think of my sister it's always terrible when people die young you know my sister was only 36
21:05years old and we lead such busy lives and it's very difficult to sit still and you know have time to
21:14think and that's why i always when i do these trips with you and you have time to think and and um you
21:20know and it's nice to think about your friends that aren't here you know they live inside you
21:26so anyway to my little sister i love you
21:43right onto tranheim to catch the boat once more onto the breach dear friends once more
21:50the sun oh i can feel it yes oh
22:00we're on the motorway we've got an hour to go
22:03i've got the chemical brothers playing in my ears oh yeah one two three four
22:10life is pretty good
22:28let's slow it down lads we're in town this is tron time ladies and gentlemen well that was a that was
22:35a big ride today ewan there's a big old schlep to get here isn't it my arse is so numb oh my gosh
22:46well it's been a pleasure riding with you today ewan it's been a pleasure to ride with you too charlie
22:51as always oh this is it here oh my god very nice there's antoine is there waiting for us
22:57ah mr bournemon we've been expecting you look at that hello everybody it was an amazing ride
23:08how are you sorry i was shouting and what a beautiful looking hotel so uh maybe we shouldn't
23:16film the hotel just because i think is this is this the youth hostel that we're staying in
23:20here yeah do you think it's got a bath oh dude there's something so much better
23:34i agree to do this in my own volition nobody has pushed me into this aim for the soft sea weave
23:40three two one
23:51charlie i've got our dinner oh this hotel stay has been really nice getting to trondheim that last
24:04morning was so um hard going over that hill over that mountain yeah it was fantastic fun yesterday
24:12but i'm excited for the rest of the trip we're in trondheim and in order to get to the islands for
24:18midsummer we're going to take a shortcut and travel by boat overnight all the way up here into the
24:23arctic circle this is going to be an exciting little while and uh yeah i'm looking forward to it
24:33i feel like a new man
24:45let's do it
24:48what a day beautiful it's like a whole new experience riding in the sun
25:02this bike shouldn't be so like platty it's really spitty and poppy energy
25:08see there it clicks into its normal sound there that's it there we go yeah the four of the trip
25:16it would always feel like this it would do that blatting thing
25:25there's our boat oh yeah look at that
25:29we've gone up that ramp
25:32that's pretty cool man
25:36at low speed it's like and then once you get up to you know fifteen one fifteen hundred revs or two
25:42thousand revs then it suddenly finds its sound so i think it's like slightly out something's off
25:56that's not going anywhere it's not going nowhere mate yeah all right let's go good
26:00over the next 24 hours two boat trips will take us and our bikes up the coast of norway
26:09whoo look at the scenery oh my god gosh the nicest day we've had is when we're not riding the bikes
26:17yeah yeah it's quite extraordinary it's not very hardcore it's not very long way round it's a bit like soft way round
26:24this cloud is sitting like about 50 feet above the ground
26:42the sun doesn't set here for two months so the summer solstice
26:46holds a special significance and has been marked since viking times with bonfires on the beach
26:54we're officially in the arctic circle now okay you're charlie after you sir
27:12first off we're heading to some traditional fisherman's cabins our base camp while we explore the islands
27:22now we're heading to the island so i'm so happy to be riding the bike again that was a lot of boat work
27:29yeah there's a lot off they'll love that tunnels holy moly
27:36Well, here we are, guys, a whole new world.
27:51Fishing must be a big business here.
27:53Look at all those boats.
27:54And one of these huts must be our bed for the night.
27:57Might be this place here.
28:01It's not nice to sound.
28:06It just sounds terrible.
28:09I just realised why my bike's making funny noise.
28:12That was close.
28:13Looks like a machine gun.
28:15Doesn't it?
28:17It's all coming out.
28:18Oh, wow.
28:22I've been looking at it.
28:24I was looking at it before.
28:26You were waking up the whole town.
28:28That's even since Amsterdam.
28:31I realised that since Amsterdam it's been broken.
28:33Because running around those little streets in Amsterdam, I was like, blah, blah, blah, blah.
28:38I was thinking, this isn't right.
28:40Oh, man, that's funny.
28:43I feel like almost like getting it off and taking it to a welder in the morning or something.
28:48Yeah.
28:48See if you can get it welded up here, that'd be fun, wouldn't it?
28:50Yeah, let's do that.
28:51Yeah.
28:56Oh, look, in here.
28:58There's two beds in there.
29:00Just every day a different place to sleep.
29:03Oh, I've got a bit of sea legs there.
29:04Did you feel that?
29:06I'm still, like, wobbling around a bit.
29:09I was a little kid the last time I slept up on something like this.
29:13You sure you're going to be all right up there, Charlie?
29:15Yeah.
29:16All right, mate.
29:17See you in the morning.
29:17Love you.
29:18All right, good night, guys.
29:19Good morning.
29:26It's beautiful here.
29:27It smells like the highlands of Scotland here.
29:30It's that sort of mossy, grassy, sheepy smell.
29:35It just smells so familiar and so beautiful.
29:37It reminds me a bit of Jaws, this place, like the town in Jaws.
29:40Look at these.
29:41There's shipbuilders everywhere.
29:42So we're going to try and find a welder or some metal worker who can fix my exhaust pipe.
29:49And we'll try and get that done before we get to the beach this evening.
29:52So, that's the plan.
29:55These islands.
29:56Oh, my gosh.
29:56It's so beautiful.
29:58See if I can be reminded of what they're called.
30:05Chaps.
30:06What are these islands called?
30:08Loft?
30:08Something?
30:09Lofteton, is it?
30:10Lofteton.
30:12Lofteton?
30:12Hang on.
30:13I'll just show you here.
30:14That's not right.
30:15Sounds very original.
30:16Sounds like Bridgerton.
30:17L-O-F-O-T-E-N.
30:20Oh, Lofton.
30:21Lofton.
30:22The Lofton Islands.
30:22The Lofton Island.
30:24Vikings made those.
30:26Yes.
30:28Is this a Viking piece?
30:29That's an early Viking painting of what they thought the future was going to look like.
30:34They were dead on.
30:35These are Viking artifacts?
30:36No, that's just cheap Ikea.
30:38But the Vikings invented the flat pack as well, because they sailed a lot.
30:44So, they had to, you know, make everything sort of fit in those little boats.
30:49So, you can't knock them.
30:51Your knowledge is amazing by the Vikings.
30:53I've always been fascinated by the Vikings.
30:57Good.
30:58Good.
30:59Great.
31:00Thanks for those words of wisdom, guys.
31:02Yeah.
31:03Wisdom.
31:04It's in the Book of Borman.
31:07Right.
31:08Off to a welder.
31:09Are we ready to heave ho?
31:11You ready?
31:11Yeah.
31:19Here we go.
31:23Oh, Jesus.
31:29I have no idea where I am.
31:32Going around the circles.
31:35Maybe like a clown boat.
31:40Okay, go.
31:41Come on.
31:48Why are you going like that?
31:50Because what?
31:51Don't pull so hard.
31:52Don't pull so hard?
31:53Yeah.
31:54Okay.
31:55Too much of a Viking.
31:56Too strong, man.
32:01On second thought, let's walk.
32:04Look, that in this case is...
32:05They might have a welder.
32:07Should we try this one first?
32:08Yeah, door open.
32:09Door open.
32:11Oh, my God.
32:12They look so tiny in here, don't they?
32:14They look so tiny in here.
32:17Hello?
32:18Can I ask a favor?
32:19I wondered if you had a welder that I could have asked to help me to just weld that back on.
32:24You do?
32:25How long have you worked here?
32:2622 years.
32:27No way?
32:28You don't look old enough to work here 22 years.
32:30Ah, thank you.
32:32That's good.
32:3422 years.
32:34And you work on all fishing boats mainly, or...?
32:38Passenger boats.
32:39Oh, okay.
32:40Yes, they're certificated there.
32:41Yeah, yeah.
32:42Oh, I see.
32:43Oh, we've been travelling on quite a lot of those, haven't we, one way or another?
32:53I love it.
32:54It's the international thing.
32:55Well, if it doesn't fit, we can just...
32:57Just hammer it.
32:58Just smack it.
32:58Smack it.
32:59Totally right, man.
33:00It always works.
33:02I'm quite excited to get it done.
33:03Ooh!
33:04It's going to be good, isn't it?
33:05Yeah.
33:06Such a good feeling.
33:09Don't look at the ark.
33:11Don't look at the ark.
33:12You still want to look at it, don't you?
33:14It ain't never coming up again, though.
33:15It's never coming up.
33:16Not in a million years.
33:18Okay.
33:19Okay.
33:20Perfect, yeah.
33:21Um...
33:22Woo-hoo!
33:24Right!
33:25Back on the road.
33:25My God.
33:26Thank you so much.
33:28Can we owe you some money for this?
33:30Are you sure?
33:31Yeah.
33:31Oh, thank you, brother.
33:32Thank you so much.
33:33That is amazing.
33:34That's great.
33:35Look at that.
33:35I don't think that's going anywhere.
33:36No, that's perfect.
33:37That's perfect.
33:39So...
33:39Ready?
33:40Moment of truth.
33:41Here we go.
33:49That sounds bad, doesn't it?
33:51Oh, yeah.
33:52Brilliant.
34:00And it's riding absolutely lovely now, at low speed.
34:04Oh, God.
34:05What a difference.
34:06Thank you, welders.
34:10It's nearly mid-summer, but before that local tradition, we've got time to check out another.
34:16Stockfish.
34:17An ancient Viking delicacy that they're still making here today.
34:26I'm Ewan.
34:27Hello.
34:27Hello.
34:28How are you?
34:28Nice to meet you.
34:29What's your name?
34:30Katarina.
34:31Katarina.
34:31Nice to meet you.
34:32Charlie.
34:33I can hear you.
34:33Charlie, hi.
34:34We'd love to have a look around.
34:35That's possible.
34:36Yes.
34:37I would just suggest that the stockfish has a nice smell.
34:40Ah.
34:41It's a good smell.
34:42That's a perfume, you know?
34:44Oh, okay, yeah.
34:45So we'll be wearing that smell for the rest of our lives if we don't wear this.
34:48Oh, okay.
34:48So we'll put this on then, sorry.
34:50Okay.
34:50For me, that would be perfect if it's okay for you.
34:52Okay.
34:55Okay.
34:57You see all these rocks?
34:59Yeah.
34:59It's for drying codfish.
35:00They're full in the wintertime.
35:02And then you can feel the smell of the fish in the air.
35:05We clean it, take off the head, and we put it on the racks for drying.
35:09We go into the stockfish house.
35:13Okay.
35:14Yeah.
35:14Wow.
35:15Wow.
35:16No wonder there's no fish left in the sea.
35:17They're all in here.
35:21Last week, we took all the stockfish inside, and now it has to mature inside this building
35:26for a month.
35:28Okay.
35:28Inside.
35:28Inside.
35:29Okay.
35:30And you don't smoke them, or it's just raw fish you hang up?
35:32No, they are naturally.
35:32Yeah.
35:33And why doesn't it rot?
35:35Why wouldn't they just go off?
35:36The climate here in Lofoten is special.
35:38It's the only place in the world where actually we can hang up this fish and take it down to
35:43soak it and make it become a natural product.
35:45Did you taste this?
35:47No, I've not tried it like that.
35:48You never tried it like that.
35:49No, I've never come across it in my travels.
35:50No?
35:51We prepared something for you, if you would like.
35:53Perfect.
35:53Yes.
35:54Okay.
35:55The stockfish was used also by the Vikings when they went around the world, and they
35:59used this because it was dry, it was easy to preserve, and it was a lovely taste of it.
36:05This is dried stockfish, you see?
36:07Nothing else has happened to it.
36:08Nothing else.
36:09That's really good.
36:11It's just nothing's happened to it.
36:12No processing, nothing, no salt, no nothing.
36:15Just hang it up, dry it, and eat it.
36:17Okay, we must follow the tradition.
36:19The Norwegians, they used the beer.
36:22This is without alcohol because you are driving, of course.
36:24Oh, good.
36:25Thank you very much.
36:26Okay.
36:26Chin chin.
36:27So we should do chin chin.
36:28Cheers.
36:28Cheers.
36:29So nice to meet you.
36:30Lovely.
36:32It's just hard to believe that they hang the fish up
36:35in January, and it stays there till June.
36:38Yeah, it's up here, huh?
36:39On these rods, yeah.
36:41It's just funny, isn't it?
36:43You just think, it can't be, you just think we must be much more complicated nowadays,
36:48but still they're doing it this old-fashioned way.
36:50You just take the head off the fish, gut it, split it, and then hang it up.
36:59I got my fish.
37:00Thank you very much.
37:01Well, that's dinner sorted.
37:06Let's head to the beach.
37:15Well, a very moody place, isn't it, with these clouds?
37:18Look at that mountain in the clouds.
37:21Amazing.
37:22It's like a volcano that's spewing ash.
37:25Wow.
37:25I've not really seen anything like this, to be honest.
37:37It's quite a place.
37:39It really is, isn't it?
37:40Dramatic.
37:41Everything's that colour.
37:42Everything's red.
37:42Oh, mid-summer.
37:56It's turning to me out to be a real pig of a day.
37:59OK, so this is in here.
38:08It's quite the dramatic backdrop, isn't it?
38:10It certainly is.
38:11It's a nice beach, though, isn't it?
38:13Beautiful.
38:14Shall we go on the rocks?
38:16Oh, oh.
38:17Hang on.
38:18Oh, yeah, this is the...
38:19Second.
38:20You get dinner?
38:21My starter.
38:26Appetizers.
38:27I really like it, though.
38:28It is good.
38:30This is the peas of the sea.
38:34Anyone fancy a bit of a nibble?
38:36Go on, Tim.
38:37Have a bit.
38:38Here.
38:40I'll give you a few bowls.
38:46It's fine, isn't it?
38:48It's more the thought of it.
38:49Is it?
38:50Yeah.
38:50It's tasty.
38:52Look at that guy.
38:54Spoiling our hardiness.
38:57Well, it's actually not that cold.
38:59It's just quite windy.
39:00Go on, then.
39:01In you go.
39:02Come on.
39:03Surf's up.
39:04Back to the fire.
39:06Yeah.
39:09Woo.
39:10There's some heat coming off, isn't there?
39:11Nice, isn't it?
39:12My eyebrows are melting.
39:16Wow, that really is something else when the wind comes this way.
39:20I mean, I don't know quite how summer this midsummer moment feels, but...
39:26There's Charlie on fire, walking to the background.
39:32My head's going on the floor.
39:35As hardy as these islands are, the dark winters must be punishing, so you can see why they'd want to make the most of the longest day of the year.
39:52Oh, it's a lovely place, man. I love it.
39:55This is your place, is it?
39:58Yeah, yeah.
39:59It's my place.
40:00What's about this midsummer night festival? What usually happens on midsummer nights?
40:05I mean, summer night, you know, the family and the kids are out. We are having the bonfire, then you usually have a small, smaller fire on the side, where we have the barbecuing sausages, and also a porridge called rømmegrøt, which is sour cream porridge.
40:23Oh, sounds good. Sausage wouldn't go miss right now, would it? Oh, there's a nice dog. Husky, that's beautiful.
40:30What a place to have your campsite. Wow.
40:38This part of the Lughalton Islands is some of the oldest mountains in Europe.
40:44Oh, really? Do you know how old they are?
40:46No.
40:47Four billion and thirty-five years old.
40:49Four billion and thirty-five.
40:51It's very precise, the thirty-five.
40:53Yeah, yeah.
40:53Four billion.
40:53Do you know how I know?
40:54Why?
40:55Because when I came to Lughalton, they were four billion years.
40:58LAUGHTER
40:59That's so funny. Perfect.
41:04That was brilliant.
41:06Oh.
41:07Oh.
41:09The sky.
41:13Now we can, look, you can see the mountains now.
41:15When we got here, they were all covered in clouds, but it's beautiful.
41:19I know.
41:19Beautiful spot.
41:21And it's nice having a big bonfire on the beach.
41:23Well, happy midsummer, Charlie.
41:25Happy midsummer.
41:26We're heading to Svalbard, which is this amazing island in the Arctic Circle.
41:39We're here.
41:40We are at the top of the world and on top of the world.
41:43Here we go.
41:44Wow.
41:45This is quite exciting.
41:47Oh, look at that.
41:49It's a very much polar bear area.
41:53How do we do that without worrying about the bear?
