00:30We're coming round to meet you a long way on.
00:42Across 20 years and three incredible adventures, we've traveled to some of the farthest flung corners of the world.
00:48This is us on the road, Charlie. This is us on the way, man.
00:51Yet we've never properly explored the countries on our own doorstep.
00:57Okay, here we go. Into Europe.
00:58Let's do it.
01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbors.
01:06Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle,
01:12down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:18And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:29My bike's making funny noise.
01:32Riding alongside them on the third rider cycle are cameraman Claudio and Max.
01:36And the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:39Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:50Wow!
01:50And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
01:56We're in Austria now.
02:06Feeling a little peckish.
02:08What's Austria's national dish?
02:11Well, I think it's a schnitzel and an apple strudel.
02:14Oh, yeah, schnitzel and strudel.
02:18To end our trip on a high, we're heading to Europe's biggest mountain range, the Alps.
02:23Starting in Austria, we'll sweep through Switzerland and then up through France on our way home.
02:30First off, a quick pit stop in Vienna.
02:34Oh, Vienna!
02:37Hi.
02:39My butt is really sore.
02:42Here, look, I'll move forward, Ewan, and you can pat my butt.
02:47Is that better?
02:48That's better.
02:54What's this river called again?
02:56Oh, the Danube.
02:56The Danube.
02:57The Danube.
02:57Yeah, the Danube.
02:58Oh, yes.
03:08This is what I imagined it looked like.
03:10Yeah.
03:10Vienna.
03:12Here we are, Vienna.
03:15City of dreams, city of music, and fortunately for us, a city famous for its cakes.
03:21Oh, look at that.
03:22That was synchronized parking, that was.
03:25We've been told about an interesting little cafe that serves some of the best pastries in town.
03:30It's run by old-age pensioners.
03:33Is this it?
03:33Look, with the little granny face.
03:35Oh, brilliant.
03:36Run by the old ladies.
03:38Or maybe old men, too.
03:39I don't know.
03:39Oh, look, it's got old furniture in it.
03:41Oh, it's wicked.
03:42It's your first time here.
03:44Yes.
03:44Yeah, first time.
03:45Should we sit at this one?
03:46Yes.
03:46Oh, wonderful.
03:48Oh, lovely.
03:48Look around.
03:49This is Grandmaster Steining Road.
03:51We are a cafe for old and young.
03:53Old and young work together.
03:55Do you enjoy it?
03:56Yes, I like it.
03:57Yes, I like it.
03:58So, ten years, I've worked here.
04:00Ten years, you've been here?
04:01Yes.
04:02Now, what can I bring you a special coffee?
04:04Yes, yes.
04:05Oh, yes, I'll go to you and look at the coffee.
04:07Go on, Charlotte.
04:07I will ask you, please sit down now, and you will ask me.
04:11OK.
04:11You are a motorbike?
04:14Yes, we ride motorbikes.
04:16Oh, when I was young, I looked every for a man for a motorbike.
04:20Oh.
04:20I didn't find one.
04:21You didn't find one?
04:22Well, you've got them now.
04:23You've got two now.
04:23No, no, I don't.
04:29Hello.
04:30Hiya.
04:30Hello.
04:31Hiya.
04:31Yeah, could I take a piece of this, please?
04:33Apple shrewdl.
04:34Apple shrewdl, yeah, please.
04:36Cream?
04:37Cream.
04:37Cream, yes, please.
04:38Cream, yes.
04:41We have an expression in Scotland, eat up your aunties.
04:45This is a bit like that.
04:47Eat up your aunties.
04:53Is that apple shrewdl?
04:54Yeah, this is apple shrewdl.
04:55Can I have a bite?
05:00Oh, it's very, very good.
05:02It's good, isn't it?
05:02Yeah.
05:03Bloody hell.
05:08That's a good one.
05:10Here are our special cake from Vienna.
05:13Oh, is that?
05:13Oh, my God.
05:14Is that custard?
05:15Vanilla sauce?
05:16Oh, my gosh.
05:17Oh, my gosh.
05:18Oh, my gosh.
05:19Is that like your...
05:20Oh, my gosh.
05:21Oh, my gosh.
05:22Oh, my gosh.
05:23Oh, my gosh.
05:24Right down the jeans.
05:29Oh, it's good creme anglaise.
05:30Oh, my God.
05:30It's so good.
05:31They have the washing machine.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Grandma, could you just throw my in a quick cycle?
05:36Yes, I did it early, surely.
05:38Thank you so much.
05:39Oh, my gosh.
05:42Let's get a little bit of that one.
05:44Thank you very much.
05:45Love it.
05:51It even looks like something your granny would have made for you.
05:55Look, isn't it?
05:56So, basically, there are two motivations.
06:09One is financial poverty.
06:11If you're 65 plus and need some additional income, there is nothing.
06:17There's nothing.
06:17Nothing.
06:18And the other one is social poverty.
06:20Yeah.
06:20When people stay active, having meaningful activity to do,
06:25then we stay healthy.
06:27Healthy.
06:27And not like.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Congratulations.
06:29Well, you're making it work.
06:31So, good for you and helping so many people along the way.
06:34And your custard is outrageously good.
06:37You like it?
06:37The custard's very, very good.
06:39Of course it is.
06:40It's like granny's custard.
06:41Granny's custard, yeah.
06:42Fantastic.
06:42I've eaten all the custard.
06:43I'm so sorry.
06:44Oh, no, no, no.
06:44That's fine.
06:45I didn't leave any, not really any chrome anglaise for you.
06:49But the, uh, what a great idea.
06:51Brilliant.
06:52Absolutely brilliant.
06:55This way, right?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Yeah, Ewan, you take the lead, Ewan.
07:05I've just scrammed so much food.
07:07I know, me too.
07:08I feel absolutely, I completely like I've got a food baby.
07:13Yeah, I'd like to just go like that.
07:15I'm going to pass out right now.
07:17Yeah.
07:17Time for some proper Austrian culture.
07:26And for that, we're going up into the mountains.
07:31During the summer, this amazing landscape becomes a natural backdrop for an array of plays and
07:36concerts.
07:36And we've been invited to a sneak preview of a brand new opera being staged on a lake.
07:43It is such a beautiful part of the world, Austria.
07:46I love it.
07:47This opera is about a merman who falls for a salt maiden and is loosely based on an old folk tale
07:57about how valuable salt deposits were found in this very lake.
08:02Wow, look at this.
08:03This is nice, isn't it?
08:05Yeah.
08:06Oh, look, there she is out there.
08:08That's the salt woman, right?
08:09That's what the merman's looking for.
08:13There's the other cast.
08:14Wow.
08:15In the boat.
08:16Look at that.
08:18I sent this legend to Vanni Moretto and he decided to compose an opera for us.
08:25And I found Andreas, who is our director.
08:29Yeah, yeah.
08:31Thanks for letting us watch today.
08:33It's the first rehearsal and, you know, the first rehearsal at the lake.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Is it exciting?
08:37Yeah.
08:37Great.
08:38Good luck.
08:39Oh, oh, oh.
08:41Oh, oh, oh.
08:56That's the most basic one.
08:59This is exactly where the legend takes place.
09:04So, you know, it's something really exciting in a way to be here.
09:09Okay, and go!
09:23Thank you, let's do it until this point.
09:26Thank you, thank you.
09:39Right. The waterman.
09:41Right, he sees something in the water that is strange.
09:47Not on the line between me and the singer.
09:49Please, get out of the line.
09:51Please, get out!
10:01You did a great job with the boat.
10:04You were like hauling it back on your own at one point.
10:07Very strong.
10:08On your Bernstein-farbenes heart.
10:13That is love.
10:19Okay, let's stop here. That's a good break.
10:21Brilliant.
10:22Well, thank you, guys.
10:23Break a leg. Have a great time.
10:25And thank you very much for letting us observe this morning.
10:27That was really special. Thank you.
10:29Now that is the way to see an opera.
10:32It's magnificent.
10:33I really, really like it here.
10:38This is some of the most staggeringly beautiful landscape in the world.
10:43And while I'm here, I can't miss the opportunity to practice a new passion of mine.
10:47I'm very excited about the paragliding tomorrow.
10:52I'm absolutely passionate about it because my dream ultimately is to climb the mountains of Scotland and fly down them.
10:58And that's why I really want to learn to be a good pilot.
11:01Today is the day.
11:02I took a course and I went up to Santa Barbara and I've learned to paraglide and I'm not quite certified yet, but I'm close.
11:12Let's start up here, fly out here, lose height here, down, and then land somewhere over there.
11:37Oh, the conditions are gorgeous.
11:47Okay, here we are.
11:50This is the launch site here.
11:52Oh, here we go.
11:53It's a bit higher than Santa Barbara.
11:56Shall I do some lefts and rights to wait for you?
11:58No, you don't have to.
11:59No, I don't need to. You'll be right behind me.
12:00You'll be descending.
12:01As soon as you're okay, I'll go.
12:02Okay.
12:03And if I fluff up a launch, well, then you're on your own.
12:08What am I doing?
12:09Who thought this was a good idea?
12:12Make sure I'm not twisted up.
12:17We're doing tandem, so I thought it'd be nice to fly with Ewan.
12:20And I was down there, and now I'm up here, and I was all confident down there.
12:25It's so super lightweight.
12:27There's no clips.
12:29This just hooks in there, like that.
12:32And then this goes over to lock it.
12:35A little elastic, and that's it.
12:37So, Ewan? Yeah?
12:38You can take off whenever you're comfortable with whatever wind you like.
12:41He's done a couple of hundred of these, so I'm quite happy.
13:00All right.
13:03Wow.
13:05How beautiful.
13:06We can be stronger than life is ill.
13:13So, with steering and a paraglider, you lean first.
13:17That instigates the turn, a little bit of brake.
13:20And you come around.
13:22Relax your legs, Ewan, relax.
13:25Look where you are.
13:27Woo, Charlie!
13:31All right, mate?
13:32All right, yeah.
13:33I thought I'd just drop in.
13:35Nice to see you up here.
13:37Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
13:38People keep talking
13:42About how pots don't be
13:45Oh, my God.
13:47Wow, it's like a religious experience.
13:49It is.
13:51But we don't belong
13:52I just love it so much.
13:54Oh, wow.
13:56Whew.
13:57maybe we can fly to the landing field
14:17oh my god
14:22wow feeds up
14:27okay okay yeah it made me feel a bit ill when they were going in those real tight circles i felt a bit
14:35like a bit a bit woozy i felt there but that was um that was amazing
14:40here comes you in
14:55charlie it is incredible isn't it oh man i mean we saw each other up there a little bit but we ended
15:00up in different heights and stuff so yeah nobody quit you look good up there right so charlie if
15:06you can gather it yeah gather it up a little just so it's over the top a little bit that's it
15:15do you want me to zip it up from this end yeah all that camping has helped with the packing
15:20you maybe that's why i like tents so much because they remind me of paragliders isn't amazing look
15:28you stick in the back of your car that's your aircraft in there that's it
15:38how was that oh my god it was so beautiful i had a little cry i was like i got so moved
15:44i loved it so much it was the highest takeoff i've ever done that was a heart stopper it was
15:50funny when when i was going tandem he double checked all the clips i couldn't help it i had
15:55to check for myself as well just to double check that he double checked
16:06we've been told about an artist who works out of a castle in this part of switzerland
16:10he goes by the name not vital and was part of a group of new york artists in the 80s
16:16which included warhol and basquiat
16:21this is definitely off the beaten track oh wow look at it up there
16:28yeah that's a big old house
16:32and is this his gallery or he lives up here i'm not sure i think a bit of both
16:40it's a big old house
16:42hello and you live up here sometimes sometimes
16:50would you i would yes
16:52i would yeah
16:55wow okay i love that on this end there that's called unpleasant object
17:03are we allowed to go and have a look you want to go yeah we'd love to see it
17:06oh well look at this 1900 this person came here his name was link here he invented old old mouthwash
17:15yeah as he became so rich with that
17:19that he could do whatever
17:21so he came here he saw this this ruin bought it and built it for 16 years so this castle was built
17:29on mouthwash on the fresh breath of germans that's brilliant
17:37oh
17:40yeah those are testicles if you see the david of michelangelo in florence yeah
17:45let's say that david would be as big as the palazzo his balls would have this size
17:51oh it's nice to see them what a place it's incredible so like i made this whole tree this cast in bronze
18:01wow beautifully done wow that's big how many pieces did you make it i don't know i mean quite
18:08a few i guess no but it's technique and technique is not so important so it's michelangelo already
18:15the technique technique is not important okay let's go we take the elevator oh that's an elevator
18:22okay of course there is that is just hilarious wow so the owner lingner he wanted to be an organist
18:31no well this is where he was going to play yeah this is the order it's the biggest private organ in europe
18:39jeez look at the pipes in here they thought before everything has to be straight yeah it can be
18:47like spaghetti and sort of air goes through and so they could compact the whole organ and when was
18:55this organ built 1916 the year that he died is it playable yes well let me have a little have a go
19:01go charlie have a go i've never ever played one of these before wow this is benjamin britain's wow this
19:15was his answer because he composed here
19:37just played benjamin britain's piano there you go beautiful so we put this
19:43just um you can just leave it up i'm worried about that okay charlie i think you're right we
19:47should put it down why i'm worried about that we're worried about that part let me just yeah pop
19:51it down because it but it's it's made in england yeah well exactly that's why we should have you ever
20:00own an english car
20:17he just appeared
20:31look at this if you like mountains this is it wow and this is the national park
20:38yeah it's lovely traveling yeah traveling is fantastic maybe they built these towers just for
20:42the view no no i'm joking the view was of no interest the idea of looking out is new
20:49in the old days you were either out or your inside this idea of looking at the landscape that's that's
20:57decadent oh how funny decadent
21:00it was a great pleasure to meet you really absolutely fantastic such a pleasure i really enjoyed your company
21:08i took a photo of the rainbow and it looks like it was coming out of the camel's pelvis oh yeah
21:21wow that was quite a mind-blowing experience he was a character made me laugh he had a very
21:32comic turn of phrase it's quite funny when we were by the organ you know that organ plan where'd he come
21:39from i mean it was like he was waiting in the wings it was so weird yeah he looked like he was from a
21:451950s italian art movie
21:47before we leave the alps we'll stay the night at our cameraman claudio's house
21:58what an amazing place to grow up bloody hell

24:47weird shitty thing that's that's the bit where they slush oh wow those are the sticks yes i wasn't
24:57expecting like a fishing rod a big old wobbly thing so we have uh here this is the part where we hit
25:03a hornus this is something like a hockey puck okay a little bit smaller but harder right it goes
25:08very fast 300 kilometers per hour and they try to hit this hornus as far as possible that's the puck
25:16yeah better clay where does it sit oh right at the end wow okay what happens when you go into the
25:21this is death line for you death line okay here it goes he reminds me of my neighbor jimmy wiley very

29:02well should we stop off and stretch our legs okay let's do it you think that's it i did it awesome
29:11isn't it amazing huh i did a six day trip around france and i remember having pictures of my bike with
29:20this in the background and i wanted to be left alone so i did a full-on like shave proper mohican
29:27and nobody spoke to me for five days it was terrible it was so lonely
29:33quite awe-inspiring when you see it from here isn't it the size of it let's have a little peek inside
29:42look at the glass color yeah and the end what an amazing feat to build something like this but the
29:50intricate detail of everything's insane look at all these little carvings everywhere the masons were
29:57allowed to carve their own oh their own faces as a kind of as a vintage this is where they used to
30:05crown the french kings that's insane
30:15there's one for telsha
30:19my lovely sister
30:27okay go onwards and upwards
30:40calais our first sun post for calais oh yeah look at that

32:10she's the star
32:11so for our last meal together i'm making leaf pasta and then we're doing this beef so we'll pan sear it and then put it in the oven
32:22it is amazing isn't it i mean it's not the longest mileage in the world but 50 year old bike
32:29and the cold and the heat and the rain pretty impressive i think i'm so grateful to her you know

33:05time and looking out for each other i really really like it that's perfect beautiful
33:17it's just squished them out squidge them out if you squash them and then cook raw garlic it gives
33:29sometimes gives a different kind of flavor this gives it a more earthy flavor i'm always going to
33:34do that now and i'm always going to cook my new potatoes in dill in dill those are two things i've
33:41learned on this and you have to let them rest the potatoes don't you so yeah who wants a kiss
33:53it's just after 6 30 we leave at 8 go up to cali get back to charlie's house and meet everybody

35:18close
35:34i'm finding it really difficult to remember everything that we've done on this trip i mean it's
35:39it's quite extraordinary we've really packed it in we've been carried around this huge journey
35:45on 50 year old bikes it's quite a long way
35:50i've never been in most of the countries we went through before i don't think i've ever been to
35:54denmark i don't think i've ever been to denmark you see the landscape change around you here we go
36:12so they call us humankind it's a nice wall of snow we experience the elements
36:21we've been attacked by mosquitoes in forests and pissing rain they want my blood oh dear my favorite
36:34night was camping on that island and they left us there
36:38we just sort of fell into a lot of stories and you end up meeting extraordinary people
36:47and there's something about that that feeds your soul
36:54that's the technical term you have to be open to the journey you have to be open to your bike
36:59breaking down and being stuck at the side of the road are you able to be my knight in shining armor
37:05that was the spirit of the trip that was the whole point go on old bikes that would slow us down a
37:10bit so we would see more stuff have more of a laugh and that's exactly what happened amazing
37:24oh man the idea of riding the bike to your house so exciting it is cool all the trips we've done we've
37:32always finished somewhere else yeah and then now we're you know back into the channel channel back
37:37to back to britain a long way home here we go
37:54fantastic almost fell over there that would have been embarrassing
37:57yeah i saw that charlie and you in the other day you and fell flat on his face fell out of those
38:03hearts yeah standing still in a train yeah welcome to igloo we hope you had a pleasant trip
38:09right now on british soil there we go hold on we have to drive on the left oh my god the left the left
38:19we're on the home straight to charlie's house in surrey
38:22it won't be the end of the journey for me though as tomorrow i'll leave charlie behind and set off
38:27for scotland on my own well in a few hours we'll be um at your house we'll be at my house
38:37but first though we're going to meet up with some bikers it's become a bit of a tradition
38:41we're trying to coordinate all of the convoy people who are starting to arrive it's four
38:50minutes past one dad's normally a bit of a stickler for time here he is well done you did it
38:58we can hear you coming around the corner yeah yeah they've got the pop-pop-pop-pop for the bike
39:17wow it's lovely to see all those spikes in my mirror
39:22these guys are motorcyclists ewan was telling a story about when he was making the film he was
39:28prohibited to ride a motorcycle he said asking me not to be able to ride a motorcycle is like
39:34asking me not to listen to music that's who these guys are
39:40remember the ride into new york i remember a very strong feeling of losing you and all the people
39:47yeah being on the road with charlie is something that i share with him and no one else you know
39:52he's in my mirror or i'm in his it's so familiar we've done so many thousands of miles like that
39:57you know i think as you get older you're much more precious with the people that you spend time with
40:03and you is one of those people there is something about being like a boy again on our bikes as kids
40:08you know and meet up with mates in the street and just knock about it's a bit like doing that as a
40:12grown-up i wasn't really going anywhere until we did the long way around and i remember thinking
40:18that i let my family down so i feel very grateful that i met ewan it's been amazing it has thank you
