01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbours.
01:06Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle, down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:18And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:29My bike's making funny noise.
01:31Riding alongside them on a third motorcycle are cameraman Claudio and Max, and the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:39Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:51Wow!
01:51And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
01:56Yesterday's doing fine, not too much on my mind, dragging my feet in the sand, looking out at the sea.
02:14Norway, you have really, really blown my mind.
02:20We're on the way to Sweden!
02:23I looked at the map last night.
02:25I thought we were so much further south, and I was like, oh God, we're still so far up there, man.
02:34Having been as far north as this trip will take us, our plan for this leg is to start heading south into Sweden and then into Finland,
02:41as we look to get lost in the forests and lakes of Lapland.
02:46Everything changes when you cross a border.
02:49That's what's so nice.
02:58Oh yeah, look at that.
02:59Straight road, down into some beautiful lake.
03:03Very nice.
03:06Look at these bugs.
03:07Jesus.
03:09Jesus.
03:10You can see them.
03:13Clouds of them, but that's funny, like in the space of an hour.
03:17Well, it's because there's so many trees and so much water here, I guess.
03:20I got some sausages, some dinner.
03:23You have some jerky.
03:26No, nothing here.
03:27No?
03:28I've changed.
03:30I used to be a jerky boy for a long time.
03:36Okay.
03:37Oh, there's something on the road there.
03:51Unbelievable.
03:59Unbelievable.
04:00He's got a tiny windscreen.
04:02I don't know.
04:03He's got like a little, just a little car, isn't it?
04:06Let's see what he's up to.
04:08Can he come in?
04:08Yes.
04:09Yes.
04:13Hello.
04:14Wow.
04:14What are you?
04:15Wow.
04:15What are you doing in there?
04:17It's fine.
04:18What does it feel like in there?
04:20Exhausting.
04:20Downhill and in the flat, it's great, but...
04:23Yeah.
04:23Up the hills.
04:24Yes.
04:25Are you on a tour or are you just out for the day?
04:28No, it's a kind of a challenge.
04:29How many miles or kilometers?
04:322,100.
04:33Oh.
04:342,100 kilometers?
04:37In how long?
04:38How long?
04:39Eight days.
04:40What's your name?
04:41Nicholas.
04:42Nicholas.
04:43I'm Ewan and Charlie.
04:44We do long, long motorcycle rides.
04:47Okay.
04:47But it's very easy for us compared to what you're doing.
04:50Well, well, I mean...
04:51It's very hard for us too.
04:53Well, I mean, the elements.
04:56Good luck, mate.
04:57Yeah, good luck.
04:58So nice to meet you.
04:58Thank you so much.
05:00Good luck.
05:01Take care.
05:05Beep, beep.
05:09That is fantastic.
05:13Okay, guys, should we go?
05:14It's a good on-the-road song, isn't it?
05:23It is.
05:23It's a good travel song.
05:43Oh, there's a dare.
05:44It's a big old reindeer, that is.
05:47Holy moly.
05:55There's a little road here on the left.
05:58I don't know where that goes.
06:00We'll go straight to our campsite.
06:02That's right, Link.
06:03Oh, look.
06:03This could be good.
06:08Can we camp here?
06:09But I guess we can, right?
06:10Yeah.
06:13All right.
06:14All right.
06:25Jeez.
06:26Going all around my Johnson.
06:30Taking your life in your hands there.
06:33But look where we are.
06:34We're in a wood next to a marsh.
06:37I mean, we're asking for it, really.
06:38Every paradise.
06:48There is a...
06:49Oh, no.
06:50There's the rain.
06:52Oh, balls.
06:54Speedy, speedy.
06:55Very, very, very annoying.
07:05Shit.
07:06It's getting so wet.
07:07My tent.
07:08Oh!
07:08Here, I'm here.
07:19I'm here.
07:29Okay.
07:30It's very soggy.
07:36Oh, no.
07:37Are you in yet?
07:39Oh, no, you're not in.
07:39I just came over to see you.
07:40Who's idea was it to camp tonight?
07:49Oh, boy.
07:51Yeah, what a baptism of, you know, the start of the rest of the trip.
07:56Inside my tent, they're all just looking at me, trying to get inside.
08:02They want my blood.
08:03All right, Charlie.
08:08What a night.
08:09Bloody hell.
08:10Maybe it'll be dry in the morning.
08:12I hope so.
08:13Let's skip cooking the sausages tonight.
08:16Cheers.
08:17Night, Charlie.
08:33Smuggling around out there, Charlie?
08:38Oh.
08:41Morning, Ewan.
08:42Morning, Charlie.
08:42How are you?
08:43How the devil are you, old bean?
08:45Pretty good, man.
08:53Sorry.
08:54I got my trousers down.
08:55Oh, my God.
08:58Well, at least it's not raining.
09:01My God, they're everywhere.
09:03In Siberia?
09:04No, Far Eastern, Russia, I got badly bitten on my...
09:08Oh, my God.
09:09Yeah.
09:10We had a really nice camp here last night.
09:12There's lots of mosquitoes here.
09:14And my bottom has been bitten rather badly yesterday.
09:19Wow.
09:20Jesus.
09:21There's one, two, three, four, five.
09:23There's five, at least five.
09:25And that was just in one squat, one sitting.
09:29And also my willy is bitten in three places.
09:32He really helped himself, that one, didn't he?
09:34Little greedy bastard.
09:36Oh, my God.
09:37No chance.
09:38There's a...
09:38There's a...
09:39There's a thing in Britain called a twiglet,
09:42which is like a...
09:43a snack.
09:44It's like this bent, nobbled...
09:47That's what my penis looked like.
09:48Oh, my goodness.
09:48Just terrible.
09:50It is terrible.
09:51Look at where we are.
09:57Wow, that's just beautiful, isn't it?
10:03We've got a lot of miles to cover today
10:05as we continue heading south.
10:07And with so much of Sweden covered by forest,
10:10we're all set for a beautiful journey.
10:11Oh, hang on.
10:18I can't hear you and Spike.
10:21I thought we'd fix this in Norway.
10:26Oh, that's so annoying for Ewan, isn't it?
10:29To have that noise again.
10:31I don't know how to fix it.
10:40I don't know, myself, how to make it better,
10:42which really pisses me off.
10:44It annoys me.
10:48There we go.
10:49Right.
10:50Come on, then.
10:51Get out of here.
10:58To survive on a trip like this,
11:00you become so attached to your motorcycle
11:02and you become so reliant on it.
11:05When your bike is not running right,
11:07it's an horrible, horrible feeling.
11:14Oh, gravel.
11:15I think gravel, guys.
11:17Watch yourselves.
11:20The road less traveled.
11:24You all right there, Ewan?
11:26It's not running great.
11:27It's just an old bike.
11:28You know, it's 1974.
11:29It's got to be fixable.
11:31It's just a machine.
11:33I just want to fix my bike.
11:34That's what I want to do.
11:35Should we stop here?
11:36Oh, my God, that's quite oily still.
11:47So, let's see.
11:53Oh, yeah, look, that's coming through.
11:54I just took the covers off both of the float bowls.
12:05I put some fuse wire up all the three jets.
12:09I sprayed them, all three jets, with carb cleaner.
12:11Okay, so now I want you to push the plug into the plug wire.
12:16Yeah.
12:17I want you to lay the plug wire on the valve cover.
12:21Like this?
12:22Yeah, that should do it.
12:23Okay, watch.
12:24Ready?
12:25Yeah, let me see.
12:26It's not sparking, right?
12:33It's just sparking initially, and then it doesn't spark.
12:36Okay, check the plug wire's going into the distributor cap.
12:42Make sure those wires are pushed all the way in.
12:46Oh, yeah, that went in.
12:49Okay, that...
12:49Well, there's your problem.
12:50Was that it?
12:51Somewhere along...
12:52Make sure they're all in.
12:55Yeah, that just jumped in.
12:58Okay, well, there's your problem.
13:00Crank it.
13:10Oh, my God.
13:12This is the same thing.
13:14Ah!
13:15You got it figured out.
13:16Is it normal to want to cry at a moment like this?
13:21Is that sort of a thing that happens?
13:23Well, I feel like a million dollars.
13:24Thanks, Mo.
13:30Ah, so smooth and nice.
13:34Ooh, it's so nice.
13:37It sounds amazing.
13:39Well, I can tell you, it sounds a lot better than it did.
13:41You know?
13:42I mean, I didn't want to say anything before, but wow.
13:46You look at those cars.
13:52I wonder where they're going.
13:53Should we follow them?
14:00It's a drag strip.
14:02I wasn't expecting this.
14:10I think the strip must be there where the seat are.
14:12Where the seat are, yeah.
14:13It's so funny.
14:26It's so much effort.
14:27Money.
14:28Money and effort for what?
14:30How long does it take?
14:3130 seconds?
14:3225 seconds?
14:33Yeah.
14:34Amazing.
14:35Just a quarter mile.
14:37No corners.
14:38Dead straight.
14:39What is that?
14:40Look at that.
14:41The size of the engine.
14:42It's no wonder that it's so big.
14:43It's just huge.
14:46Well, can you tell us how it all works?
14:48They tell me to roll to the pre-stage.
14:53I have my RPM up and roll a little bit more.
14:58I push the start button and I release the button and it goes away.
15:05Wow.
15:05Yeah.
15:07Wow.
15:08That's awesome.
15:09Oh, my God.
15:12Are there kids racing?
15:14Hello.
15:15How old is your daughter?
15:17Today, my daughter is nine.
15:18Oh, wow.
15:19She was nine when she was six.
15:22Wait, she was doing this when she was six?
15:24How many children do you have, then?
15:25Me.
15:26You have three children.
15:26Three children.
15:27And all of them are...
15:28Yes, that's her big brother.
15:29He's 16.
15:30And the one on the bike was 14.
15:32Oh, your heart must be...
15:34I mean, she's going to be the goodest girl in school.
15:51Next stop, coming all the way from the UK.
15:55We have two electric privyans going hand-to-hand on the...
15:58Oh, my God.
16:01Look, Dave and Ross are going to race.
16:03Are you ready to race, mate?
16:04Yeah, let's do this.
16:04Come on.
16:05This is me promising that whatever happens at the race,
16:09it's my fault.
16:10Yeah.
16:27Come on!
16:28Holy shit!
16:38Oh, no!
16:40And it's the right privyans that's the winner.
16:48Nice bow down.
16:49I like it.
16:49I've got to be a humble loser.
16:58Really, it's won or lost.
17:00Reaction.
17:01At the reaction time, it's won or lost.
17:02That's where Dave did good.
17:04That's where Dave did good.
17:04It's reaction time.
17:05I'm surprised.
17:06For more of a second.
17:08Like a boss.
17:11I love it.
17:12I really enjoyed it.
17:13I mean, what an event to come across in the wilderness.
17:24Sweden just keeps handing us these surprises.
17:27I'm so glad we chose this route, Charlie.
17:30After last night's camping in the rain, we booked some cozy cabins for tonight.
17:48On the edge of the evergreen forest.
17:56Look all closer and there you'll find.
18:02Oh, it's gorgeous.
18:04You can put a little fire on to heat it all up.
18:06That's it.
18:06Okay.
18:08Whoops, that's perfect.
18:10Is that a little cooking spot we can use in the forest?
18:13Okay.
18:14Who's hungry?
18:15Is anyone hungry?
18:18Don't worry, it's all going terribly well.
18:32Make sure you don't burn anything.
18:36Think they're done?
18:37Yeah.
18:38Thanks, Charlie, for doing the food.
18:41Pleasure.
18:44Wow.
18:45There's real heat coming off it.
18:49It's nice.
18:50It feels like if you walked off for like a minute and a half, you'd get totally, totally lost.
18:55Oh, yeah.
18:55Like you'd never find your way back, you know?
18:56This is where I stayed last night.
19:08It was really nice to get some good sleep.
19:11There he is.
19:13Happy bunny.
19:14In the back there.
19:16Gonna pack up our stuff now and, um, head off to the next excitement.
19:22Um, let's see where we go.
19:30I'm riding along listening to some Nick Drake.
19:33Oh, I love Nick Drake.
19:37It seems very in keeping with the scenery today, this road through the forests of Sweden.
19:41Oh, there's a deer here on the...
20:02Oh, that's a big one.
20:03Look at that.
20:07Beautiful.
20:08Beautiful.
20:08Today we've been invited to meet Tony, a traditional craftsman and a local legend who has a special
20:17connection to these magnificent creatures and the forest in which they live.
20:22It's just down in one of those houses, I think.
20:25Down here on the left.
20:29I think this is it.
20:30Yeah.
20:30This looks like it.
20:34Hello, lovely dog.
20:35Hello.
20:35Nice to meet you.
20:38How are you?
20:38Hey.
20:39You must say hello to the dog.
20:40I wanted to say hello.
20:41I didn't know whether he was...
20:42Oh, that dog is so kind.
20:45She will only kiss you.
20:47It's like a snow dog.
20:49Sweetie white moose hunting dog, but she's not barking for the moose.
20:54He's always kind.
20:55Everybody loves her.
20:57Sweetheart.
20:57Yes.
20:58Can we go in or...
20:59Yeah, you can show us what you do.
21:01First we're going in and eat.
21:02You haven't drank coffee or tea afterno.
21:04Oh, we'd love that.
21:04Cheers.
21:09Thank you very much.
21:10Cheers.
21:11You eat dry reindeer.
21:12Yeah?
21:13I've eaten.
21:14I've eaten.
21:15I've been eating quite a lot, actually.
21:16I've had some.
21:17I've had some, yeah.
21:18Yeah, I like it.
21:20Have you seen reindeer?
21:21Yes.
21:21You've seen lots of reindeer, yeah.
21:22Yes.
21:22On the road.
21:23Yes, yes.
21:24It's very dangerous.
21:25That's life here.
21:26OK.
21:27So you ran a business here?
21:29I started with, in the 70s, about 50 years ago.
21:33I was a young boy.
21:34Then I started to buy and sell reindeer skin, reindeer horn.
21:39Do you hunt the reindeer yourself?
21:40You cannot hunt reindeer.
21:42Right.
21:43They have owner.
21:44Every reindeer have an owner.
21:46If people own them and you can't hunt them, how do you end up with the skins and the meat?
21:51Because the owner slaughtered them, sell the meat and sell the skin, dry the skin and sell it.
21:57And what do you like to do with the hides?
21:59You take them in the water, take the hair away after five, six weeks, and then you make leather.
22:05And then you can make leather for beautiful things.
22:11When you can make leather for this kind, for a leather for a knife, or you can make white leather.
22:19So you can make this amazing, beautiful, small bag.
22:24Yeah.
22:25That is beautiful.
22:26Very beautiful.
22:28You can make the ornaments by yourself today.
22:30Oh, we can?
22:31Yes.
22:31Oh, let's see.
22:32I'd love to.
22:33Come on, we're going in here.
22:38I can see you've...
22:40Don't move too much.
22:41I can see you've had a bit of a tidy up.
22:44Bloody hell.
22:44One sit here and one sit there.
22:45OK.
22:46All right.
22:47And you want to make a bottle opener?
22:49No, no, no.
22:50I'd like a cheese knife.
22:52Cheese knife.
22:52Like this.
22:52Because I'm...
22:53What's that say?
22:55Cheese.
22:55Yeah, that's great.
22:56That's great.
22:57I'm making a cheese knife today.
23:00And you want to have...
23:02Like a...
23:02Butter knife or a knife?
23:04A knife knife.
23:05A really knife.
23:06A really knife.
23:08Oh, look, he's cutting the horn.
23:11That's not a knife.
23:12This is a knife.
23:13Yeah.
23:14We cut this one.
23:16OK.
23:16And then you put the...
23:18Drill it and put the glue and then...
23:20Cut-tong.
23:21OK.
23:22Cut-tong.
23:22Yes.
23:24That's the technical term.
23:25We cut-tong it.
23:26Look at the concentration on Charlie's face.
23:39Not a moment too soon.
23:43Not a moment too soon.
23:46We should be rushing.
23:47Yes.
23:48Now we're talking.
23:50Look.
23:50That's about enough, isn't it, you think?
23:52It's good.
23:53Choose a child to ignore.
23:56Charlie, that's beautiful.
23:58Yes.
23:58Very good.
24:00So I will follow the field.
24:06Won't give it to him quite yet.
24:08But we can show it to him.
24:10That's my wife, Olivia.
24:11That's Dune, my daughter, and Kenvara.
24:15It's very special.
24:16Well, thank you.
24:18What do we owe you for this?
24:19No.
24:20I never take one crore off.
24:23I don't need a house for 400 square metres.
24:26I don't need to show the new car.
24:28And I have 1,300 hectare.
24:30Because I don't want to cut the tree.
24:32I save it for the next generation and next and next.
24:35That's important.
24:36Because I have a free life.
24:37That's very, very rich life.
24:42Little bit mosquito sometimes.
24:44But otherwise, it's cool.
24:45What kind of person would complain about that?
24:47LAUGHTER
24:48I just find it very moving.
24:57Tony, I just clicked with him as soon as I met him.
24:59And that's what this trip is all about.
25:01Connecting with people.
25:02And learning about the places they live.
25:04We've been told about an amazing eco-hotel up ahead
25:18where we can get even closer to Tony's beloved forest
25:21and sleep among the trees.
25:24Kind of pine forest.
25:26It's beautiful, isn't it?
25:27Yeah.
25:27It smells amazing.
25:29Oh, I love it.
25:30I love the shimmer when you look through the trees.
25:34Did you ever stay in a tree house before?
25:36No.
25:36I don't think I've ever slept in one.
25:48Welcome to the street hotel.
25:50Each room here has been uniquely designed
25:52by a leading Scandinavian architect
25:54with extreme care taken
25:56to have as little impact on the environment as possible.
26:03Go on, Charlie.
26:04You go first.
26:05Oh, OK.
26:06It's your place.
26:07OK, come into my house, you know.
26:10Oh, bird nests.
26:12It's stunning.
26:14350 bird's houses.
26:18So nuts!
26:19Oh, my God, look at that.
26:23It's a glass roof.
26:25That's amazing.
26:28Extraordinary.
26:28Have a lovely time, Charlie.
26:31Right, let's have a look at yours.
26:32I'm desperate to have a look at yours.
26:33Come on, then.
26:35Oh, I love it.
26:36So you can see this one is hanging in the trees.
26:40Wow.
26:41Yeah.
26:42And what we need to do is we need to open
26:44for the trees to grow.
26:45Wow.
26:45It's nice that we are next to each other.
26:51Oh, my gosh.
26:55Look at that.
26:56This really feels high up, doesn't it?
26:58It's really amazing.
27:02It's just us and nature.
27:07It's just stunningly beautiful.
27:10Tony the craftsman.
27:11Wow.
27:12Was he a character?
27:13We spent, what, three hours with him.
27:15Just had the most fantastic fun,
27:18great entertainment.
27:19And lovely to see how he lives in harmony
27:21with his surroundings.
27:24Anyway, time to get some sleep now
27:27in my beautiful tree house.
27:30Good night.
27:30It's nice to be in beautiful places like this,
27:52but it's obviously much nicer
27:54if you have someone to share it with.
27:55Hello, Charlie.
28:03Good morning, my good man.
28:07How are you in your tree house?
28:09Sitting in my chair.
28:11I'm thinking about you.
28:14In your swing chair?
28:16In my swing chair.
28:18I'm all naked and ready.
28:22Charlie, no.
28:23I'm doing my video diary.
28:25That was completely on camera.
28:27Oh, no.
28:30I'm just joking.
28:32Well, we'll make them wonder now, right?
28:35I'm sure they all wonder anyway.
28:36I'm sorry.
28:36I'm sorry.
28:37Ha, ha, ha.
29:07We're now leaving the forests of Sweden and crossing into Finland, known as the Land
29:19of a Thousand Lakes.
29:20Oh, wow, look at this.
29:23Finlandia!
29:24Woo!
29:25That's why travelling overland is so much fun, is this change constantly.
29:34Could you tell I'm getting hungry?
29:39Just stop over here, shall we?
29:41Yeah.
29:42Maybe make our own tea, do some fishing.
29:45Yeah.
29:46Ewan's got the old stove going along, we've got food, you know, it's perfect.
29:53You got a lighter?
29:54Yeah, I sure do.
29:59Ooh.
30:00Did you fall down?
30:01Yeah.
30:02Did you?
30:03That was just a stunt.
30:10Okay, oh, you're having the dal rice.
30:12Yeah, I'm gonna go for it.
30:16Mmm.
30:21It's always a good idea to bring some seasoning along.
30:24Ooh.
30:29Are they actually blueberries there?
30:30Are they ripe enough to eat?
30:38Mm-mm.
30:39Really close.
30:40Reminds me of when I was in Ireland.
30:42In Ireland they called them frockens.
30:44And we'd always go off looking for frockens.
30:46I would go with my friend Kaz and we'd go on our motorbikes together and just go off into the Wicklow Mountains.
30:52You'd sit there.
30:53I was talking rubbish and eating handfuls of frockens or blueberries.
31:03Oh, that was a good one.
31:04That was a good cast.
31:05That was a good cast.
31:07Very nice.
31:08Do you want to go, Charlie?
31:10We are.
31:11Good go.
31:14All right, mate.
31:16Beauty, mate, beauty.
31:20Feels a bit heavy this one.
31:21Is there...
31:22Have you got a smaller?
31:31Oh.
31:32Oh.
31:33Easy.
31:34Oh.
31:35I went right over.
31:36Oh, shit.
31:38Oh, my God.
31:39The drone.
31:40I just cast over the head of it.
31:42Hold on.
31:43I think I've got caught.
31:44I've got it caught.
31:45Can you wind it in?
31:46I'm winding it in, yeah.
31:47It went right over the top.
31:49F***ing cast.
31:50Have you got it?
31:51No.
31:52I think I've got it.
31:53Oh, wow.
31:54What a cast.
31:55Jesus.
31:56Like...
31:58There it is.
31:59The light's still on.
32:00The light is still on.
32:01I caught a fish.
32:02I caught a fish.
32:03I caught a fish.
32:04Amazing.
32:05Pick it up.
32:08Oh, my God.
32:09That is outrageous.
32:11Look at that.
32:12We did it.
32:13We did it.
32:14No, no, no, no.
32:15Unbelievable.
32:16Look, it's totally mangled in there.
32:17What are the chances, Charlie?
32:18You're the whole lake.
32:19The whole lake.
32:20The whole lake.
32:21And it just cast that way.
32:22Oh, my God.
32:23Right over the top.
32:24God, it went way past.
32:25Oh, God.
32:26That is funny.
32:27Well, at least we caught something.
32:28Yeah.
32:34Amongst these Finnish lakes, we've heard of this crazy sport
32:37where they race snowmobiles, but not how you might imagine.
32:58Wow.
32:59My brain doesn't understand what it's seeing.
33:10It's like playing the bagpipes because you've got to have constant breath going through the
33:17pipes so you can't stop.
33:19And this is like the sort of water motorsport version of playing the bagpipes.
33:25Because if you stop on one of these, just sink.
33:34It looks like he's in trouble, this guy.
33:36Oh, my God.
33:37Who was the first person that got to a lake on their snowmobile?
33:54Maybe I'll try it and rise across.
33:55And thought, I could make it.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Mac and cheese?
33:58Oh.
33:59Why don't you meet Miko?
34:00Oh, wow.
