01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbours.
01:06Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle, down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:18And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:28My bike's making funny noise.
01:31Riding alongside them on the third rider cycle are cameramen Claudio and Max, and the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:39Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:51Wow!
01:51And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
01:56I like carrying everything I need on the bike, riding bikes.
02:05I've just never tired of it.
02:07I love it so much.
02:08When else do you get the chance for day after day to just hang and be with a friend that you like hanging out with?
02:18I love it.
02:19We've been on the road for over six weeks since we left my house in Scotland.
02:23Today, we're saying goodbye to Lithuania and riding into Poland, known as the geographical and cultural crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe.
02:32Four minutes to the Polish border.
02:38Polish border coming up.
02:41Mr. Subborda here.
02:43Welcome to Poland, everybody.
02:46Welcome to Poland.
02:48Hello, hello, hello.
02:52Oh, my arse is numb.
02:54All right, ladies and gentlemen, here we are.
03:02This is the biggest city in northern Poland, it's called.
03:07How do you pronounce this town we're in?
03:09Biawistaka.
03:11Biawistaka.
03:11Biawistaka.
03:12This is how it's spelled, but it's pronounced in a very different way.
03:17We know how to say the name of the town we're in, which is probably a first.
03:20It is a first, I think.
03:21You know, this could be a new leaf.
03:24Biawistaka.
03:26It's a difficult one to pronounce and remember.
03:28Biawistaka.
03:30Yeah, it's very nice.
03:32But it's nice to be in Poland.
03:33I've not been, we've been here before, so it's another take.
03:39This is the Versailles of Eastern Europe.
03:43It's that pretty, this building.
03:45Apparently, the city's medical university is based here now.
03:48Oh.
03:49Look, it's a beautiful ball up here.
03:53Oh, yeah, that gold ball.
03:55That's lovely.
03:58Oh, look, it's got a moat.
04:00Oh.
04:03Do you know what this reminds me of?
04:04Oh, my God.
04:05This garden?
04:06It's like the movie that we met each other in.
04:08Yeah.
04:09But it was sort of like this.
04:10These little hedges in, like, very tight manicured style like that.
04:16I played a pretend Dutch garden designer and designed garden just like this.
04:29I was an informant, wasn't I?
04:31At one point, I pushed Charlie up against a wall and I had a plume in my hand.
04:34But do please keep your performance within the bounds of credibility.
04:39I am yours, X.
04:42Your master forced me into this.
04:44His motives are his alone.
04:46But the designs of this garden are mine.
04:48And it's quite hard to do that without hurting somebody.
04:50So that's where we sort of bonded, I think.
04:52Yeah.
04:53Sticking things up our noses.
04:55One of our first conversations was about motorcycles.
04:58Yeah, that's right.
04:59Because then the next bike I got was the Ducati, wasn't it?
05:02You brought the Ducati, the 748.
05:04We've come full circle, you know.
05:10This has been amazing.
05:13Sticking things up our noses.
05:15I'm just heading to Warsaw now.
05:25These long way trips that we do, I always forget it's a long way.
05:34Here we go, mate.
05:35This is it.
05:37This is it, mate.
05:38Ooh.
05:42Ooh, look at the old town.
05:44It's absolutely beautiful.
05:48We made it.
05:49Can't wait to explore this place.
06:01As much as we love spending every waking moment together,
06:04sometimes it's nice to do things on your own.
06:07So this morning, we're exploring the city separately.
06:10So, here we are.
06:12I've never been to this place.
06:13I've always wanted to be here.
06:15Warsaw.
06:16It's an amazing history.
06:17But they nicknamed this place the city of the Phoenix,
06:20because it keeps being destroyed and keeps rising from the ashes.
06:23This is dedicated to all the fallen Polish soldiers.
06:37It's very respectful, isn't it, to have the flames, the guards, to remember.
06:44We all know the history of Poland and the history of Warsaw is a devastating one.
06:55So many of these buildings were rebuilt after the Germans flattened everything.
07:00They did incredible jobs of rebuilding.
07:01They did incredible jobs of rebuilding.
07:05Extraordinary.
07:11I've been here once before.
07:13Years ago, I shot a film here.
07:15We made this sort of Polish gangster-y type movie where I was a sort of James Bond character, I guess.
07:21But it was wintertime, you know, it was just before Christmas.
07:24And there was this whole area was all winter markets.
07:28So we stayed down that way.
07:30But anyway, that was the last time I was here, being James Bond in a gangster movie.
07:34Look at that, Winnie the Pooh in Polish.
07:42I played Christopher Robin, yeah?
07:45I like playing Christopher Robin a lot.
07:50One of the biggest things that they do here is food.
07:53Food is really important to the Polish.
07:56And then they have these dumplings, which are super famous.
07:59So I'm going to do a little bit of dumpling cooking.
08:02I love cooking, so this should be fun.
08:04I love cooking.
08:05I love cooking.
08:06Hello.
08:07The plan for today is really simple.
08:09You will try yourself and make the best, best, the pierogi you can find in Hovorsha, right?
08:14That's pierogi.
08:15I like the word pierogi.
08:16How does it sound?
08:17Pierogi sounds great.
08:18Sounds good.
08:19My stomach is saying, yes, please.
08:20Yes, it really is.
08:21So pierogi is the most popular Polish dish, right?
08:24Yeah.
08:25The recipe for a dough is really simple.
08:28You have eggs, some flour, oil, water, and a salt.
08:32Let's cook it.
08:33Okay.
08:34Oh, a lot of salt.
08:35Oh, my God, yeah.
08:36I suppose that makes sense.
08:37She knows what she's doing.
08:38She, like, made thousands and thousands of pierogi.
08:43How many pierogi will you make a day?
08:50800 for one person.
08:51And we have, like, two or three usually.
08:54Doing it.
08:55That's a lot of pierogi.
08:56The secret to our success lies love in manual craftsmanship and only best ingredients, right?
09:02Yeah.
09:03Today we have potatoes and quark cheese.
09:06And you need to make sure you put it right inside of the dough, right?
09:11Yeah, in the middle.
09:12Yeah, yeah.
09:13This is like a mini Cornish pasty.
09:18You make this worse because there is filling at the border.
09:22Damn it.
09:23Unbelievable.
09:27You can have sweet or savory.
09:28That's the dessert one.
09:29It's blueberries and some sugar.
09:31That's mine.
09:32And look, this is her plump one.
09:37Should we cook some of these then?
09:38See if these survive?
09:40The typical way to cook pierogi is to boil them in the salted water, right?
09:47So these ones are the ones that we made.
09:49I think this one is mine.
09:50You need to choose the ugliest.
09:51It should be yours.
09:52The ugliest.
09:53The ugliest is mine.
09:55Here we go.
09:56Mmm.
09:59Well, it's delicious.
10:00The potato with the dumpling.
10:01Mm-hm.
10:02It's very good.
10:04I'm going to go and feed the whole crew now.
10:05Got dumplings for Ewan?
10:11Beautiful.
10:15God, look at this.
10:16You can imagine it in a movie, you know, all grey.
10:21People coming in on their raincoats in the rain, their briefcases.
10:24You know, everyone's getting stamped in and stamped out.
10:27Oh, it's nice, that breeze.
10:28It was quite hot today.
10:31Ah, I really enjoyed this morning.
10:32It's good to be off the bike for a bit.
10:34But now it's time to go back and meet up with Charlie.
10:41Sometimes I'm not in control of it.
10:43It just comes to me.
10:45Good morning.
10:46Good morning.
10:47Good morning.
10:48Good morning, mate.
10:50You all right?
10:51After exploring the city our afternoon is going to be spent visiting our friends from UNICEF.
10:56Ha ha ha!
10:58What, mate?
10:59What, mate?
11:01You all right?
11:03After exploring the city,
11:05our afternoon is going to be spent visiting our friends from UNICEF.
11:09We've been UNICEF ambassadors for all these years, for 20 years.
11:12It's a big part of our lives, Charlie and I.
11:15I'm looking forward to another UNICEF project.
11:17It's very much to do with what's happening in Ukraine at the moment.
11:20Poland and Ukraine share both a border and a long, close relationship.
11:26At the peak of the war,
11:28Poland took in over three and a half million refugees from its neighbour.
11:34They're trying to make a temporary new life in Poland.
11:45Hello, hello, hi. Hiya, how are you?
11:47This centre is a safe place where children of all ages can play,
11:52while their parents access advice and support
11:55about education or healthcare
11:57so they can better integrate into life in Poland.
12:00I have a little three-year-old boy,
12:02so this is going to make me feel really homesick today.
12:04Would you like to play?
12:06Yeah, I'd like to play. Can I join in?
12:08OK, let's go.
12:10OK, little red riding hood.
12:13Since opening in 2022,
12:16over 28,000 Ukrainian refugees have got help from this centre.
12:20Do your mum be here?
12:21In Poland?
12:22Mama.
12:23OK, that's good.
12:24Bye-bye.
12:25Nice to meet you both.
12:26Hello.
12:27Hello, can we come in?
12:29Hi guys, hi.
12:30Hiya, hello.
12:31The art therapy session.
12:33We actually get to know each other better
12:36and also create this safe space for sharing.
12:39My name is Patia.
12:40I am 16 years old.
12:42This is a lot of space in Ukraine since the war started.
12:46As you can see, everything is burning.
12:48The house is in the middle.
12:50You can imagine the disruption to their education
13:03and to their lives.
13:04It's massive.
13:05It's quite powerful, isn't it?
13:09Yeah, for sure.
13:11Two strong emotions.
13:16One is the terrible sadness of what they've gone through.
13:20And the other side of it is the kids are always really fun
13:23and resilient and uplifting, you know?
13:26You were happy with this?
13:28OK.
13:29Lovely.
13:30Hello, Valeria.
13:31Little fluffy clouds.
13:32OK, it's good.
13:33It's OK.
13:34Let's try.
13:37Oh, very, very...
13:38Do you want to have a look?
13:39Look here.
13:40Yeah.
13:41It's OK?
13:42Thank you very much.
13:44Here, you can do one on your end now.
13:46OK.
13:47Uh-oh.
13:49What does it mean?
13:51Lasky!
13:52What does it mean?
13:53Lasky!
13:54What does it mean?
13:55Lasky!
13:56Sparkles!
13:57Sparkles!
13:58Sparkles!
13:59Lasky!
14:00Oh!
14:01Very nice.
14:02Very nice.
14:03Very good.
14:05Could you tell us what it was like when you had to leave?
14:07It must have been unbelievable not to know where to go or what to do.
14:20This centre has a huge importance and impact in our lives because actually here we feel
14:27safe and it gives me some hope for the future.
14:30That's wonderful.
14:31Wonderful.
14:32Thank you so much.
14:33Cheers.
14:35Thank you very much.
14:36It's lovely to meet you.
14:37Thank you very much.
14:38It was quite an inspiring place.
14:44Just terrible to think of kids who are away from their home, but they don't want to be
14:49away from home.
14:51But what UNICEF does is give these children a place where they're allowed to be kids again,
14:56and that's so important.
15:01Leaving Warsaw, we're headed to Krakow.
15:04For 500 years, it was Poland's capital.
15:07It's a three and a half hour ride, and we've decided to visit Hencini Royal Castle on the
15:11way.
15:13This place was built as a fortress in the 1300s, and was once a home to Polish royalty.
15:21Well, look, lights are the realm.
15:27Now, what you have set on these carvings are some spectacular mustaches.
15:31I mean, he's got a funny sort of shocked-looking face.
15:34Good Lord!
15:35Good Lord!
15:36Run for your lives, for God's sake.
15:38We've got to get all the way up there, man.
15:40Oh, God.
15:41Isn't there a lift?
15:42We're going to get up there, and they're going to see who's shot at 5.30.
15:44Can you imagine bringing all this stone to the top of this hill when you're building it?
15:50Yeah.
15:51And then the guy goes, actually, I want a third turret.
15:55And then we're going, what?
15:57The third one?
15:58Well, that's a change of order, mate.
15:59That's going to be...
16:00That's going to cost you, mate.
16:01That's going to cost you, yeah.
16:02Free turrets.
16:04Well, let me just...
16:06Oh, look at the view, though.
16:08Wow.
16:09That's nice.
16:10Wow, it's just worth it just for that, isn't it?
16:12I do believe we can get up to the top of the turret.
16:19Oh, God.
16:20I'm sorry.
16:21Let's do it.
16:23You'll have to go up the tower on your own, though, I'm afraid.
16:25On my own?
16:26Okay.
16:27All right.
16:28Because obviously I'd come with you, but I'm all tied up right now, so...
16:30Okay, well...
16:31I won't be able to.
16:32It's all tied up.
16:33All right.
16:34Up you go, mate.
16:35See you, mate.
16:36Okay, bye.
16:37Let me know when you get to the top.
16:38Okay.
16:39Oh!
16:40Oh!
16:41Whoo!
16:42I'm coming.
16:43Let's do it.
16:50Feel the burn.
16:51Feel the burn, man.
16:53Ah.
16:54Oh, my gosh.
16:56Wow.
16:57Oh.
17:03Whoo!
17:05My legs are feeling so good at the moment.
17:07Well done, Charlie.
17:08That was fast.
17:09Yeah.
17:11I mean, I was tired.
17:13I felt the burn, but I could do it.
17:15I've not been able to do that since 2016.
17:17Wow.
17:18Which direction are we going in?
17:19Well, there's the motorway.
17:20I think we're going...
17:21I feel like we're going that way.
17:23But we might be going that way.
17:25If you're ready.
17:26Yeah, let's get out of here.
17:27Yeah, let's get out of here.
17:28Go down to, um, Krakow.
17:29Krakow.
17:36Now, we've got 92 miles.
17:38It's one hour 35.
17:39Let's, let's...
17:40Make it beautiful.
17:41Make a beautiful man, okay?
17:42We've been in the saddle for 48 days, and we've got 10 more days of our journey to go.
17:50We're on our way to Krakow, known for its beautiful architecture and for being one of the more creative cities in Poland.
17:58I've been planning to get this bit of my tattoo.
18:01I got a new tattoo recently in Atlanta, but I think I might get it done here.
18:08Gotta get to Krakow.
18:10See what's going down.
18:13Get out of the country and get into town.
18:19All right, boys.
18:20Yeah, almost there.
18:21Whew.
18:22Krakow.
18:27Krakow.
18:28War cracker.
18:33Oh.
18:34I think it's here.
18:35We're here.
18:44It's a beautiful day.
18:45It's a beautiful city, full of Baroque and Gothic architecture.
18:49You know, it feels like the whole place is a museum.
18:55Look where I am at the moment.
18:56Look how beautiful this square is.
19:00Good morning.
19:03We're in Krakow, and I thought, oh, go ahead and get my tattoo.
19:07So I texted Charlie and said, I'm going to get my tattoo finished.
19:10And, uh, Charlie said, I'm going to have one.
19:14I don't know if it's the right thing to do.
19:18And my wife was saying she doesn't pay much of the idea at all.
19:22Do I really want to do it?
19:24Ooh la la.
19:26Ooh la la.
19:27I'm a little, a little nervous.
19:30But I'm really glad that Ewan is going to be there with me.
19:34Oh, it does it.
19:35Oh, yeah.
19:36OK.
19:41Please pass.
19:44Hey, guys.
19:45Morning.
19:46How are you? Nice to see you.
19:47Morning, morning, morning.
19:48Hi, hello.
19:49Hi, guys.
19:50How are you?
19:51Hi.
19:52Hi.
19:53Hi, Peter. How are you?
19:54I wanted the word safe and home.
19:55In here safe and in here home.
19:57And then Charlie's never had a tattoo and he suddenly thought he wanted a tattoo.
20:01But I wanted to do a spark plug.
20:04I wanted to have the initials of my wife and my two children, so...
20:08My wife is not so keen, but my kids love the idea.
20:11Oh, so they're going to love it.
20:13It's going to stay for the rest of your life, but don't think too much about it.
20:16It's very nice.
20:20I love that.
20:21You looked like this all the time.
20:22I didn't.
20:23No, I'm joking.
20:25I'm not surprised.
20:30That'd be great.
20:31That's beautiful, man.
20:32That's lovely.
20:33That's it.
20:34Oh, Charlie.
20:35That looks great.
20:36I'd kind of like the spark to sit slightly in the scar.
20:37Oh, it's dark.
20:38What's this like?
20:39Oh, I cut my crap.
20:40Look.
20:41My forearm was snapped backwards and all the bones came out.
20:42Oh, it's one of many.
20:43If he starts to show you, we'll be here for a long time.
20:45Oh, OK.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Perfect.
20:48So, who's going first?
20:49Getting closer for my turn now.
20:50Woo!
20:51Woo!
20:52Woo!
20:53Woo!
20:54Woo!
20:55You nailed it.
20:56Thank you very much.
20:57Yeah.
20:58You've made it fit really beautifully.
21:00That's it, guys, isn't it?
21:01That's great.
21:02Because it's just slightly its own thing, and it's still part of it.
21:04It's great.
21:06I love it.
21:07It's great.
21:09I love it.
21:10It's great.
21:11It's great.
21:12It's great.
21:13It's just slightly its own thing, and it's still part of it.
21:16It's great.
21:18I love it.
21:19It's good.
21:20Trust the process.
21:21Trust the process.
21:22Trust the process.
21:23Trust the process.
21:24It's only on there for the rest of your life, so...
21:25Yeah.
21:26Don't tell me about it.
21:27Don't tell me about it.
21:28Don't tell me about it.
21:29Yeah.
21:30Don't tell me about it.
21:31Good.
21:32All right, Charlie.
21:33All right.
21:34Trust me.
21:35OK, Charlie.
21:36There you go.
21:37OK, there's no going back now.
21:38No, that's it.
21:39I've always imagined having my wife and my children on my arm.
21:44It doesn't hurt that much.
21:45It's not so bad.
21:46No.
21:47It's all right, isn't it?
21:48It's never hurt more.
21:49It's just the study of all time.
21:50Oh, oh.
21:51Oh, wow.
21:52It's all right, isn't it?
21:56It never hurts more.
21:58It's just 30 more times.
22:00Oh!
22:02Wow.
22:06I'm really happy with it.
22:08Wow.
22:10Holy moly. Look at that.
22:14Jeez.
22:16That's incredible. Like it? Yeah.
22:18By this time next year, Charlie's gonna be covered in tattoos, I think.
22:20You know?
22:22Wow. Wee. That's outrageous.
22:24Wow. Thank you.
22:26I think this trip for me has been a real eye-opener.
22:30I just suddenly thought, you know what?
22:32This is probably the time to do it.
22:34Brilliant. Thank you, brother.
22:36Thank you so much. We'll keep in touch and we'll see you again.
22:38Yeah, we'll keep in touch and thanks, mate.
22:40Thanks a lot.
22:44I've definitely come back here with Oli and...
22:46and the girls, actually.
22:48What about me?
22:50What about me?
22:52Well, we're all gonna come back together.
22:54That's right. That's right.
22:56And then if you just twist this tattoo here,
22:58if you just twist it round,
23:00it says Ewan.
23:02On the back. On the back, it says Ewan.
23:04Wow.
23:06Look at this.
23:08Holy moly.
23:10Those statues are stunning.
23:12God, it's spectacular, isn't it?
23:14Beautiful.
23:16Just beautiful.
23:18Goodness me, I've never seen those instruments before.
23:20What are those?
23:22Interesting that they're playing the chords on the...
23:24That's just the bass notes.
23:26On the ones on the left.
23:28But they're not...
23:30Yeah, what does that mean?
23:32I'm not playing them. I don't know what that does.
23:34I don't know either.
23:36Oh, beautiful.
23:38Wow.
23:40Ukrainian instruments.
23:42Ukrainian?
23:43Yeah, from Ukraine.
23:44Are you from Ukraine?
23:45Oh, nice to see you.
23:46Yeah, lovely.
23:47It's beautiful. Music.
23:49I'm so sorry what's happening in Ukraine.
23:51I'm so sorry.
23:53Yeah.
23:54Exactly.
23:55Oh, beautiful.
23:56Well, we'll let you play.
23:57It's beautiful.
23:58Nice to meet you.
24:02It's an amazing town, Krakow.
24:04It's really a nice walking around town.
24:06There's a really nice vibe everywhere.
24:08You're gonna love this next place I've found.
24:11It's just here on the right.
24:13I just love the idea of a pinball museum.
24:16It's all here.
24:17Yeah.
24:18Our generation.
24:19It was a bigger thing, really, for us, wasn't it?
24:20Right.
24:21It was in a pub or...
24:22Yeah, yeah.
24:23I know.
24:24And you sat and you played it.
24:25Here we are.
24:26Pinball.
24:27Well, your student played it.
24:28Your student played it, yeah.
24:29Maybe you sit because of your legs.
24:30You probably do sit down to play pinball.
24:32Wow!
24:34That was just below the belt.
24:37Literally.
24:38Oh, my God.
24:39Let's have a look.
24:40This is huge.
24:41I love it.
24:42Oh, it's been a while since I've played.
24:46What?
24:48Oh!
24:51Oh!
24:52Oh!
24:53Oh!
24:54Oh!
24:55Oh!
24:56Oh, yeah.
24:57Oh, you've got to play this one, Charlie.
25:00Oh!
25:01Lost that one.
25:02I'm not very good at this.
25:04That was good.
25:05I actually forgot how much I like pinball machines.
25:07It's fun, isn't it?
25:08Oh, oh, oh, oh!
25:09That's me.
25:10Oh, yeah, look.
25:12There's Ewan.
25:13Here you go.
25:14Ready?
25:15Oh, you've got to have a go in it, Ewan.
25:20You're immortalised, Ewan, in a pinball game.
25:27God, does it feel weird?
25:29It just brings back my, it's funny, because it brings back my love of stuff.
25:34Like, when I was a kid, then music and, you know, listening to R2-D2 and 3PO and whatever.
25:40I loved it.
25:41It was such an important part of my childhood.
25:43Okay, you have a go, Charlie.
25:45Oh, oh.
25:46You remember when they re-released the movie, the original?
25:49Yeah.
25:50Oh, yeah, we went to see it.
25:51We went to see it together.
25:52Oh, yeah, we went to see it.
25:53And you already knew that you were going to be in it, but you couldn't tell anyone.
25:59Here we go.
26:00See that music?
26:01Yeah, that music.
26:02That makes me, like, feel like I'm seven again, you know?
26:06I could have stayed in there, I think, all day.
26:09It brought out the child in me, for sure.
26:12Now we're going to get on the road and head south.
26:14Well, I shall always remember Krakow for my little tattoo.
26:21Yeah, that's right.
26:22It's going to be a...
26:23A forever reminder.
26:25Yeah.
26:39The mountains on the right are amazing.
26:41Rumbly clouds ahead of us.
26:46We're heading to Witów in southern Poland, known as the Polish Highlands, in the foothills
26:52of the Tatra Mountains.
26:54This is sheep country.
26:56Tonight, we're being hosted by a family of musicians who are going to treat us to some
27:00local folk tunes.
27:04Well, this is the place.
27:07Hello.
27:08Hi.
27:09Wow.
27:10Wow, you look amazing.
27:11Nice.
27:12What is this?
27:13A national costume or a regional costume?
27:14Regional.
27:15Regional.
27:16Regional.
27:17Well, it's so beautiful, kind of, isn't it?
27:18Beautiful colours, yeah.
27:19Is it made of felt?
27:20Can I touch your leg?
27:21Yeah, yeah.
27:22Okay.
27:23Wow, it's really warm.
27:24Because we're up high now.
27:26Okay, so would you like to come inside?
27:27Sure.
27:28Yes.
27:29It's a beautiful house, my gosh.
27:30Awesome.
27:31Wow.
27:32Wow, what a place.
27:35It is.
27:38I'm in a slight panic mode.
27:39One of the things that makes me panic is when people dress up.
27:44I'm feeling it.
27:45You haven't done that.
27:46You used to always do that.
27:47I don't do that, yeah.
27:48Charlie used to always, when he was talking, he would always touch his own breasts.
27:53But he doesn't do it anymore.
27:54Did he do a good course?
27:55I did a course, yeah.
27:56To stop it.
27:57To stop, yeah.
27:58To stop breasting.
27:59Okay, it's going to be okay.
28:00Don't panic.
28:01We are here with you.
28:02Don't have to panic.
28:03Do we keep going down, down?
28:04I can't remember.
28:05Um...
28:06Woo-hoo!
28:07Oh, sorry.
28:08Shepherds try to, like, communicate, like, throughout the mountains.
28:09Oh, through the mountains.
28:10Right, right.
28:11Can I have a go?
28:12Can I try?
28:13Yeah.
28:14Okay.
28:15Okay.
28:16Okay.
28:17Okay.
28:18Okay.
28:19Okay.
28:20Oh, sorry.
28:21Shepherds try to, like, communicate, like, throughout the mountains.
28:26Oh, through the mountains.
28:27Right, right.
28:28Can I have a go?
28:29Can I try?
28:30Yeah.
28:31Okay.
28:32Okay.
28:33Okay.
28:34Woo!
28:55Woo!
28:56Yes!
28:58You're welcome!
29:00Wow, wow, wow, that was amazing, that was great, that was funny, wow, okay, there is a bagpipe, is it a goat or a sheep, it's a goat, goat, it was a goat, it was a goat, it still is, it's a fact, like you know, the goat's soul is stirring here, okay, it's family tradition, that we all play together, is that how you met, did you meet through playing music,
29:30did you, yeah, through like a full group, that's romantic, I'd love to hear them,
30:00the harmonies are like really unique, yeah, there's very animal shaped, still, aren't they, the leg, wow, wow, that's amazing, that is incredible, I've never heard anything like that, I didn't expect that at all, that's lovely,
30:21my last cup of Polish coffee in Poland, I'm going to head to Slovakia today and rediscover a place that we were 20 years ago on Long Way Round,
30:45we crossed into Slovakia from the Czech Republic, we went from west to east, that's what was our want to do on that trip,
30:57and we're going to go back to this castle that we visited then.
31:03Okay, here we go, okay, okie dokie, here we go,
31:08let's wake everybody up on a Monday morning,
31:11I am just now enjoying this beautiful sunny morning,
31:21so Slovakia border in like 15 kilometres.
31:25Last time we were here on our first Long Way Adventure two decades ago,
31:39we rode into Slovakia heading east from Czechia, but today we're riding south from Poland,
31:46and we'll intercept our old route at Bonica Castle.
31:49I'm sure it's going to be an emotional moment, a day of memories today really,
31:57really excited to meet Russ and David.
32:04We're trying to catch the boys up, because we're trying to recreate this moment.
32:09Over Long Way Round in 2004, the 20 year younger selves of ours,
32:14it's hammered along that road, full of vim and vigour.
32:19This is a crazy, crazy memory for me.
32:23We've all stayed close friends, so we've baked something.
32:26So it's going to be a fun little moment.
32:30Oh look, there's Dave and Russ.
32:31Can you believe we're back here together after all these years?
32:46It's an incredibly important part of my life.
32:48I wouldn't have known when we did Long Way Round how much of a part of my life it would be.
32:53I mean, it completely changed my life, so I have a lot to thank Ewan for, a lot.
33:01Do you remember that?
33:01Yeah.
33:02Our friendships are unique because of what we've been through.
33:06I don't know that anyone knows me as well as these guys do.
33:1120 years.
33:16Do you remember which way you went in?
33:18We must have walked up here.
33:19Yeah, we walked up here.
33:20Okay Charlie, come on, let's see if we can remember this place.
33:23I don't think any of this...
33:24Oh, oh, oh, oh.
33:25Okay, the well's in here.
33:29Where were the little stairs?
33:31Yeah.
33:31Here they are.
33:33Yes.
33:33I remember we walked up here.
33:35And they were sort of like frustratingly...
33:36Small.
33:37Yes, look.
33:39Must have been quite lazy to say he'd had these small steps made.
33:42He's very tired of that.
33:43So he didn't spill his wine.
33:49He must have come up here.
33:51Oh, my God.
33:52Oh, there it is.
33:54Okay.
33:55Let's do it again.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Let's do it again.
33:59Oh, my God.
34:0020 years ago, we looked down this hole, Charlie, and here we are again.
34:05None the wiser.
34:06Is this the one?
34:08Oh, my God.
34:10This is going to be the cruel cut back and forth between us 20 years ago and now.
34:16Oh, I dropped it.
34:18It's very good luck, that.
34:19Suck in a bit.
34:24Do you think we've been a bit higher?
34:26Hardly changed at all.
34:27Well, well, well.
34:30Three holes in the ground.
34:32I'm so glad.
34:3320 years.
34:34We're still knocking around to the world on bikes.
34:39See you in another 20 years.
34:41Hopefully.
34:42What would I be?
34:4577.
34:46I'll be.
34:47Yeah.
34:48You'll be 73.
34:50That's all right.
34:51That's all right, isn't it?
34:51We could do it.
34:52Yeah.
34:53Lovely.
34:54I really are on the last leg now.
34:56It is such a beautiful part of the world.
34:59Oh.
35:00Those are testicles.
35:03Woo, Charlie!
35:04And then I just dropped in.
35:06This is it.
35:07This is the last day.
35:07It's done a huge amount.
35:09And I've loved every minute of it.
35:11Well, it was a hell of a long way around to get to your house, Charlie.
35:15That's for sure.
35:16Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
