00:00So there's 52 different Earths. I wonder if there's 52 different me.
00:04Here's a look at the McFarlane Toys. DC Multiverse, the new 52 gold label collection, Superman.
00:24After the continuity alternating event known as Flashpoint,
00:27the Superman that was reborn into the main universe Earth-Zero was younger than the previous incarnation
00:31and had a different personal history as well as only a casual friendship with Lois Lane.
00:36Interference from the near-omnipotent being, Dr. Manhattan, had split Superman's continuity into two,
00:42with the other half living in the shadows with his wife Lois and their son John Kent.
00:46During a battle with the fifth-dimensional imp called Mr. Mixik Pigalik,
00:50Superman managed to merge his personal histories into one streamlined timeline.
00:54His past and life became one and the same, and the so-called new 52 Superman.
01:00Just think, on another Earth, there's probably another version of me that right now is measuring
01:04off their figure. For all I know, probably using a laser tape measure.
01:07Ha, you stupid idiot. Laser tape measures never work. You're never going to get the proper reading.
01:13Sticking with the basics, though, this tape measure is going to tell us
01:16that the new 52 Superman is going to stand at 7 inches in height,
01:20working out to be a figure that's 18 centimeters tall.
01:23When it comes to borrowing bodies, new 52 probably borrows the most parts from the classics Superman,
01:28though they would have had to extensively retool the torso,
01:31because the new 52 Superman surprisingly doesn't have an emblem that's raised on his chest.
01:36One of the things I certainly will talk about, tooling brand new belts,
01:40obviously brand new boots, and the new 52 Superman would have also had a fabric cape.
01:44I don't know if I would have said the Silver Age Superman would have worked using this body for the new 52.
01:49Superman, though, should really be a younger body, and I think maybe the proportions work a little bit better
01:54using this body instead.
01:56Funny, though, enough that we're looking at new 52 Superman.
01:59If you've been a long-time viewer of this channel, you know I sort of have a history,
02:03not with this particular figure, but the design of new 52 Superman.
02:07This was the DC Direct release of him.
02:09I would certainly still say it's one of my favorite figures of all time.
02:12Easily top 10.
02:13To the point, in fact, actually, not only did I pick up one, not only did I pick up two,
02:18but because there was also a metallic variant release of these figures as well,
02:22I happened to pick up three of these.
02:25I know that's a lot of new 52 Superman, but there's, like I said, still my favorite figure in my shelf.
02:30Kind of surprised that Kal-El only comes in clue with a display stand and a trading card.
02:34The display stand, nothing really new to cover when it comes to territory.
02:38The stand is all done here in black plastic.
02:39It's got, of course, the DC logo down below, and it only has one peg.
02:42Like, some could ask, why doesn't it have two pegs?
02:45Well, if it had two pegs, Superman would stand pretty close together.
02:48He would look like one of those old wooden clothing pegs,
02:51the ones you would hang your laundry outside to dry.
02:54Did anybody really do that anymore?
02:56I know most people tend to put their stuff in the dryer.
02:58I don't like to put really clothes in the dryer,
02:59because I find that if I put a shirt in a dryer, everything shrinks down.
03:04I still hang my stuff up, but I usually tend to hang it on a clothing rack inside the house.
03:09I don't, let me know if you still hang your laundry outside.
03:12Does anybody really care?
03:14Let's put the stand, though, off to the side.
03:15I hope you do care that the figure does come included with a trading card
03:18that actually is from New 52's issue of Superman.
03:21Nice image, nice design of Superman, I believe drawn by Jim Lee.
03:26This card, by the way, is obviously the inspiration for not only the figure,
03:29but I think also the inspiration, one of the many inspirations
03:32that James Gunn used for his design of Superman from the upcoming film.
03:36More specifically, the fact the way that the cape is attached,
03:39and that this Kal-El has a collar.
03:42Nice looking figure.
03:42I mean, for like nice design of the character.
03:44Whether it translates well to the figure, we'll kind of talk, you know,
03:47more about that in a second.
03:48On the back, though, it's also interesting that the real name is Kal-El first,
03:52then Clark Kent second.
03:53There's a good substantial meaty read.
03:55You can certainly pause and read for yourself,
03:58but I don't know if you guys have time that you want to be spending elsewhere.
04:00And you don't want to have this video all sort of being bogged down
04:03by those that would have this guy just holding the card this whole time,
04:07just so everybody else would be able to read this.
04:09I've read it for you.
04:11Don't need to thank me.
04:12It's the least I could do.
04:13Let's move that card off to the side.
04:15Yeah, that's it.
04:17That's all you're getting when it comes to accessories.
04:19Not that you really would consider a trading card or a display stand,
04:22for that matter, the accessories.
04:23But Kal-El surprisingly doesn't have anything else.
04:26Swappable hands would have maybe been the obvious thing,
04:29and yet the figure doesn't come in clue with it.
04:31So you're only ever going to be stuck with the idea
04:33that this Superman, unfortunately, will always have punching fists.
04:37That's all he's going to be able to do.
04:38I suppose if you have collected enough of these DC figures,
04:41you probably could then find a fist of an equal size
04:44and swap it out with another Superman.
04:47Funny, though, interesting enough is if you look at Superman's hand,
04:50I don't know if you can make that out or not,
04:52it does look like for a second that he does have a little bump on his finger.
04:56I was actually thinking for a second
04:58where they may be using a hand from a Green Lantern.
05:01But no, no, I think it's maybe just the way it's been sculpted.
05:05It kind of looks really like he's got a bump right there.
05:08I guess to be fair, he's got a bump right next to it as well.
05:10You know, when I first looked at it, I thought,
05:12is that a Green Lantern ring?
05:14I think it's probably just more of my eyes playing tricks on me.
05:16Yeah, well, again, the mold is being borrowed over from,
05:19you know, again, this version of Superman.
05:21You can see, though, that the arms are exactly the same.
05:23Legs are, though, the same.
05:25I think even, like, the trunks and the torso are same.
05:28The only one thing that I really think could have been borrowed over from this also figure as well
05:32is that the emblem.
05:34The emblem is raised.
05:35Now, I'm normally one that comes from the camp that
05:37I feel like Superman should not have a Superman shield or emblem
05:41that should be lifted off his chest.
05:44I think I was kind of being a big believer that Superman's S should be a patch.
05:48It should never be something that's lifted.
05:49If his mom's making costumes, I can't imagine that she's tooling a molding
05:54of, like, the Superman shield, like, in her basement
05:57or maybe downstairs where she's hanging her laundry.
05:59No, I think it makes more sense for New 52 Superman to be the opposite of that.
06:03So instead of it being something that's just, though, on his suits,
06:06I really do feel like he probably should have had an S that was lifted.
06:10To go even back and looking at the DC Direct one,
06:12DC Direct had a lifted S.
06:15The S is, by the way, I mean, kind of one company to the other.
06:18They have one thing that's different, really, with the new 52 Superman
06:21is the design of the S.
06:23It's a little wider.
06:24You know, it takes up more of the occupied space on his torso.
06:27I think it's pretty close.
06:29There is one area, though, I keep looking at with my eye.
06:31That seems brighter than everything else that's around it.
06:36You can even kind of see the way I've turned it.
06:38Does it not look a little bit brighter at the top?
06:40Yeah, I do think, though, that the S should have been molded
06:43rather than just printing in place.
06:45I mean, the head sculpt is also good.
06:46We can also talk a little bit about that.
06:48Superman kind of goes away with the idea of not using a curl anymore in his hair.
06:53Rather, he sort of has like a comb to the side.
06:56That's so much cooler.
06:57Superman wants to stick with, kind of wants to be relevant with the kids,
07:01the teens out there.
07:02If we, again, look at the DC Direct one,
07:04I know we can't just keep comparing the two.
07:06Superman also sort of had the same idea.
07:08I feel like really, though, his hair is maybe not 100% right.
07:12His head sculpt is also okay, but I don't think it,
07:16I don't really think, like, even, I don't want to keep going back to the DC Direct.
07:19So, you know what we'll do instead.
07:20We'll kind of look to the card.
07:22Yeah, Superman's face seems a little wider.
07:25Also, with his chin, it's a little bit more tapered off.
07:27He seems like he's very squared in the face.
07:30I mean, it's an okay head sculpt.
07:32I think it looks a little bit better from the sides.
07:34Like, I think that looks a little bit better of a side profile of Superman
07:37than looking at it straight on.
07:39This Superman, granted, does have a collar,
07:41but the collar's just been printed in place.
07:43Because, again, like, they're using this particular body.
07:46A lot of lost opportunity, I feel,
07:48to kind of go in there and sculpt some additional panel lining.
07:50This Superman was really known for having panel lining in his costume.
07:54Again, looking at the DC Direct one,
07:55you can see, like, it's got the Superman sort of shape on his shoulder.
07:58He's got some nice panel lining all there on the front of his chest.
08:01Again, I'm not normally one that really loves panel lining,
08:04but I think if you're going to do a new 52 Superman,
08:06you really should kind of stick with the formula
08:08of what the design of the costume was in the first place.
08:11So he doesn't have that.
08:12He doesn't have it on the arms.
08:14He certainly doesn't have it on the chest either.
08:15It's pretty basic, really basic,
08:18and it really did need a lot more sculpting.
08:20If they didn't really want to go back and retool this body again,
08:25just even going in and suggesting that with lines
08:27would have just at least said,
08:29okay, we're trying to do the new 52 Superman body.
08:32We can't really go in there just for the cost and the budget
08:34of tooling everything again.
08:36But going in there, just panel lining it,
08:38would have at least said, you know what,
08:39we want to kind of stick as close to the design of the costume as we can.
08:43Speaking of sticking to the design of the costume,
08:46Superman, one of his things too,
08:47was he had these points on the ends of his sleeves.
08:50I recognize the point.
08:51I don't understand, though, why this red line is here.
08:54From what I understand, you know, again, to go back to the card here,
08:58if you can see, like, Superman's, his sleeve, for example,
09:01the sleeve is just basically blue.
09:03It's only really panel lined on the very end point.
09:07Why they then went in there and added all this additional red here,
09:10he shouldn't really have, I feel, a diamond shape.
09:13It should only really be red on the ends of his hands.
09:16Now, obviously, the moment you start to turn the hand around,
09:18it loses some of the illusion.
09:20But I think that's the only place that should really have had some panel lining.
09:23Everything else, I feel, could easily have just been done in blue.
09:27Belt's a little on the smaller side.
09:28I will admit it needs to be a little bit bigger.
09:31At least they've sculpted brand new boots.
09:32I don't think these boots have been used before.
09:34Maybe they have, maybe they haven't.
09:36The thing, unfortunately, about it, though,
09:37is that the boots, the foot, the feet,
09:39the feet are a different color than this piece right here.
09:43Now, these parts, I would imagine,
09:44they probably would have painted in red.
09:46These, they would have cast in red.
09:47So the reds, unfortunately, don't quite match up.
09:50Here's one other thing I kind of have with the cape.
09:54Now, the cape does have the emblem on the back.
09:56So, you know, again, like, where's the DC Direct?
09:58It also had that as well.
10:00Normally, I'd say, hey, fabric cape.
10:01That's great.
10:03Unfortunately, though, disappointing that there's no wire built into us.
10:06This might be one of the few figures we've gotten of a Superman,
10:09or any multiverse figure, for that matter,
10:11that has not had a wire built into the frame.
10:13Now, I don't think there needs to be a wire down below.
10:15I'm always really better with just having a wire on the sides.
10:18But this Superman doesn't have that.
10:21And because of that, his cape always sort of really looks baggy.
10:24It looks, you know, unkept.
10:25I keep wanting to kind of pose this and have it down like this.
10:28Now, I would have been able to do this a lot easier
10:30had they put a wire into the cape.
10:32It's just strange, really, that they chose to leave that out.
10:35For the figure's articulation.
10:37Now, I know it doesn't really sound like I'm singing the praises here
10:40with New 52 Superman.
10:41I just feel like there's opportunities
10:43where the figure could have been a lot better than what we actually got.
10:47Ford's articulation, though,
10:48if you're familiar with the classics release of him,
10:49then you'll know that the articulation is exactly the same.
10:52Head's going to rotate all the way around.
10:54Superman's head can look up, actually, really high.
10:57And he can also look down real low.
11:00The head does rock back and forth as well.
11:02The torso pretty much can do the same thing, too.
11:05Upper torso ball joint, lower abdomen ball joint.
11:08Arms rotate all the way around.
11:10I mean, obviously, just because he also has a fabric cape,
11:12that's not going to get in the way at all
11:14of allowing his arms to rotate.
11:16He can also pull out a T-pose or 90-degree angle bend.
11:19He actually, in fact, can go a little higher than that.
11:21The figure does have a bicep swivel.
11:23It does also have a double hinge on the elbow.
11:25And the hands rotate all the way around.
11:27Upper torso ball joint,
11:29lower abdomen ball joint,
11:30legs split out.
11:32You can also take the legs.
11:33Yeah, yeah, I know.
11:34We're going through all of them together.
11:37Forward and back.
11:37That's always the thing we do.
11:39I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time,
11:40but there's Superman's crotch.
11:42Yeah, upper torso, forward and back.
11:44That's what you're getting for the legs.
11:45Double hinge, though, on the knees.
11:47I was going to say elbows for a second.
11:49No articulation here for the boot.
11:50This is just all one continued sculpt
11:52for the rest of the calf.
11:53It does, however, have an ankle pivot,
11:55an ankle rocker.
11:56And would you believe as well,
11:57Superman does have toe articulation as well.
12:00I feel like it delivers an okay new 52 Superman.
12:04But unfortunately, though,
12:05by using a mold that was already existing before,
12:08this Superman, unfortunately,
12:09doesn't really do a lot of new things.
12:12Now, I know, like, Superman,
12:14I mean, really, not even just Superman,
12:15DC multiverse figures as a whole
12:17comes with a territory
12:18that reusing molds is part of that.
12:20I mean, you know,
12:21there's nothing really wrong
12:22with reusing a mold,
12:23but I think in a case like new 52 Superman,
12:26going, though,
12:27and just using the mold from scratch.
12:29Because, again, like,
12:30if you're looking at it,
12:31same arms,
12:32not quite really the ends of the sleeves,
12:35but the sleeves is one thing
12:36I kind of had an issue, really,
12:37with the classics, too,
12:38is that he had sculpting
12:39on the ends of his sleeve.
12:40And, like,
12:41if you're doing really the classic Superman,
12:43he really shouldn't have had that.
12:44I know, really,
12:45this Superman is still really
12:46just a page puncher Superman,
12:48like Lee Bermail.
12:49No, it was,
12:50what is it, Lee Bermail?
12:50Anyways, though,
12:51this Superman was originally
12:53a page puncher's release.
12:54Then they got the,
12:55they used the mold again,
12:57and we got ourselves
12:57the classics release,
12:58which then gets borrowed over again.
13:00I've said bored
13:00a couple of times in this review.
13:02Gets then lent over
13:03to get the new 52 Superman.
13:04I feel like somewhere
13:05in between here,
13:07sculpting had to be added,
13:08because one thing
13:09that's notable, though,
13:10about the new 52 Superman
13:11is that not only
13:12does he have the collar,
13:13not only is the cape
13:13sort of pegged differently
13:15on the front of his body,
13:16but also this Superman
13:17had more of an armor.
13:19Something, though,
13:19that you see a lot more
13:20here in the DC redirect,
13:21on the shoulders,
13:22on the front of his torso.
13:24Normally,
13:24I like a classic-looking Superman.
13:26I didn't actually mind
13:27new 52 Superman.
13:28I kind of really feel like,
13:30though,
13:30this figure
13:30doesn't really quite deliver
13:32a new 52.
13:33It comes pretty close,
13:34but it's missing a mark.
13:36It's also kind of strange, too,
13:37that, once again,
13:38this figure doesn't have
13:38any wire built into
13:39the frame of his cape,
13:41so that the cape
13:42could have easily been
13:43also something
13:43that you could have
13:44molded better,
13:45had a little bit more
13:45fitted to his body.
13:46Without not having
13:47a wire built into it,
13:49the cape kind of becomes
13:50a bit of a floppy mess,
13:51just because it's
13:51only using fabric.
13:52I remember when
13:53new 52 was first
13:54being marketed,
13:55they really hyped it up
13:56to be a big deal.
13:57They were,
13:58after all,
13:58relaunched in the DC universe.
14:00Now,
14:00this isn't new territory.
14:01DC has done that
14:02in the past,
14:03but with the marketing
14:04and Jim Lee responsible
14:05for the costume designs
14:06of these characters,
14:07there was something
14:08significant about
14:09the launching
14:10of these titles again.
14:11All the titles
14:12went back to one,
14:13and all of them
14:13had the new 52 banner
14:14across the top,
14:15so it had a chance
14:16for collectors to go
14:17and start buying
14:18issue number one
14:19of Batman,
14:20issue number one
14:20of Superman.
14:21Some, though,
14:22may not have liked
14:23the designs of the suits.
14:24Initially,
14:24I kind of looked
14:25at the look of Superman
14:26and I thought to myself,
14:27why has Superman
14:28kind of got an armor?
14:30The Man of Steel
14:30doesn't really need
14:31to have a suit
14:32that looks like
14:33it's made of steel.
14:34Yet, though,
14:35when I picked up
14:35the first issue
14:36of Superman,
14:36then I picked up
14:37the first issue
14:37of Batman,
14:38Wonder Woman,
14:39Aquaman,
14:40Green Lantern.
14:42Initially, though,
14:43DC Direct
14:44was really front-running
14:45when it came
14:45to the figures.
14:46Basing the designs
14:47on those new suits,
14:49some of my favorite
14:50figures are
14:50still that
14:51from the DC Direct
14:52days.
14:53Superman,
14:53as you saw
14:54in this review,
14:54I have three of them,
14:55a little excessive,
14:56perhaps,
14:57but still,
14:58I mean,
14:58that's a Superman
14:58I think that has
14:59held the test of time.
15:00It's limited,
15:01granted,
15:01on articulation.
15:03You're not going
15:03to be able to do
15:03as much mobility
15:05as what McFarlane's
15:05doing with his,
15:06but one thing,
15:07though,
15:07I will say
15:08that DC Direct
15:08may have done better,
15:09though,
15:10is capturing the likeness.
15:12Now,
15:12with this one,
15:12obviously,
15:13they're going to be
15:13using the molds.
15:14I mean,
15:14there's nothing really
15:15wrong with using molds,
15:16but I feel like
15:17there could have been
15:20I almost want to say
15:21he feels incomplete.
15:23I generally don't like
15:24a Superman shield,
15:25for example,
15:26the emblem that he has
15:27on his chest
15:27to be raised,
15:28especially if you're
15:29going to do,
15:29like,
15:30a Silver Age Superman,
15:31a classic Superman.
15:32Superman never really
15:33would have had that.
15:34Martha Kent would have
15:35sewn the suit from scratch.
15:36I can't imagine
15:37she's molding the S
15:38in the back of her garage
15:40somewhere,
15:40so I think it doesn't
15:41make sense for that.
15:43The one time,
15:43though,
15:43it would have made sense,
15:44though,
15:45was New 52 Superman,
15:46and yet he's one
15:47of the few Superman
15:48that actually isn't molded.
15:50It's just printed
15:51on his chest.
15:52Because he's also
15:53using the same body,
15:55it loses a lot
15:56of that panel lining,
15:57the little mold lines
15:58that the suit
15:58would have had
15:59in the comics,
16:00and it's weird,
16:01though,
16:01that omitted
16:02in this figure's release
16:03a wire built
16:04into his cape.
16:06The cape is fabric,
16:07which is fine,
16:08but unfortunately not
16:09by having a wire
16:10built into it,
16:11it doesn't have
16:12an opportunity
16:13to form it.
16:14You can't do anything
16:15more than what
16:15it's doing right now.
16:17If you want to have
16:17it in a stoic pose
16:18where the wind's blowing it,
16:19if you want to have it
16:20just curl to the side
16:21or more fitted
16:22to his body,
16:23those are all things
16:24that you can't do
16:25because a wire
16:26was never built
16:26into the cape.
16:28Still,
16:28though,
16:28I'm happy to finally
16:29have a New 52 Superman
16:30with updated articulation,
16:32but I don't think
16:34I love it as much
16:35as the D-Stirect.
16:36I mean,
16:36obviously I'm not
16:37going to have
16:37the two on the shelf
16:38where they're belonging
16:39in the same figure-verse.
16:41I still think,
16:42though,
16:42the one that we're
16:43getting from Tana
16:43and his team,
16:44it's a nice figure,
16:45but it's not nearly
16:46as good as the D-Stirect
16:48when we got,
16:48what,
16:49like 10 years,
16:5015 years,
16:50not even being later
16:51or earlier than that.
16:5320-year-old figure?
16:55Now that I'm thinking
16:55about it,
16:56maybe it was.
16:57What do you guys think
16:58of New 52 Superman?
