00:06and strong. In this channel, we've discussed many of the key elements to maintaining a healthy heart.
00:13Food, exercise and stress management. But there's one other vital piece of the puzzle.
00:20What we drink and how much we drink has a huge impact on our body. Not only when it comes to
00:26hydration and getting liquids in, but also what's in those liquids, which can either damage our blood
00:33and heart health, or support it. So today, we're going to explore 13 of the best drinks for heart
00:40health, to keep arteries strong, flexible and resilient. So blood flows smoothly around the
00:47body, and organs can cleanse and repair themselves. But before we dig in, can you do us a favour?

00:59And ring the bell to stay up to date with our latest videos.
01:03We want to make sure you get the latest info, so you can live a long, healthy life.
01:08And stick around to find out how to get two heart-healthy free gifts.
01:12We guarantee both you and your heart will love them.
01:16Okay, here's number 13. Coconut Water.
01:20Coconut water comes from inside young green coconuts, and is often referred to as nature's
01:27sports drink. That's because it contains electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, calcium,
01:34and sodium, which replenish fluids lost during physical activity. It also has fewer calories than
01:41most other beverages, so it's a great choice if you're looking for something hydrating without
01:46sugar or added ingredients. But what does coconut water have to do with heart health?
01:52Studies have also shown that coconut water is beneficial for stabilizing blood sugar,
01:58protecting against oxidative stress, and controlling high blood pressure.
02:03All of which is key for keeping your ticker in top form.
02:07What's more, researchers found that coconut water may be even more effective than water
02:13at preventing kidney stones, breaking down and flushing out crystals before they become a problem.
02:19Now, one final note. Straight from the coconut is best, as it avoids heat treatment and other
02:26processing that happens to packaged coconut water. But if you're not lucky enough to sip from a fresh
02:32coconut shell, check the label and avoid coconut water that contains added sugar.
02:37Number 12. Bitter gourd juice. Bitter gourd juice is also known as corella juice.
02:46And while it's not common in the western world, it's popular in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean,
02:52and is used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. It's made by blending the Mamoudica
03:00charantia plant, also known as bitter gourd or bitter melon, and combining with water.
03:07Bitter gourd is particularly high in vitamin C, which is vital to protecting blood vessels from
03:13rupture. In fact, some cardiologists promote vitamin C as one of the most important nutrients
03:19for preventing heart disease. While there isn't a lot of research on bitter gourd juice,
03:25the existing research shows promise. A 30-day animal study founds that feeding diabetic rats
03:31bitter gourd extract significantly reduced blood glucose. This is important,
03:36because high blood sugar causes type 2 diabetes and can damage blood vessels in the heart,
03:42leading to plaque buildup in the arteries and possibly heart attack. The rats that consumed
03:48bitter gourd extract also showed signs of repair in the pancreas and liver, while the rats that didn't
03:55receive bitter gourd didn't show the same signs of repair. A small human trial appears to show similar
04:01findings. 24 people received either bitter gourd extract or a placebo in a randomized double-blind
04:08placebo-controlled clinical trial, the gold standard of scientific research. At the end of the three-month
04:15trial, those who consumed bitter gourd had encouraging results. They showed reduced average blood sugar levels,
04:23known as HbA1c levels, as well as weight loss for overweight patients, and reduced waist circumference.
04:32So, while the research is still in its early stages, bitter gourd juice shows great promise as an excellent
04:38drink for heart health. Number 11. Coffee. Coffee is rich in compounds like polyphenols, which are known to have
04:48heart-protective effects, including protecting and repairing the lining of heart and blood vessels.
04:54In fact, according to the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, coffee is amongst the top 13
05:00sources of polyphenols. One of the most important polyphenols in coffee is chlorogenic acid, which is
05:07famed for its anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties, and is believed to have benefits for preventing
05:15type 2 diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, stroke, and blood vessel damage.
05:24Some people do have a problem with the caffeine in coffee, so if that's you, opt for decaf instead.
05:30Studies show that a number of coffee's health benefits are also present in decaf options.
05:36Go for black coffee and avoid adding sugar and processed creamers, as they are going to negate the
05:42benefits you're getting. Number 10. Chlorella. Chlorella is a type of single-celled,
05:49freshwater algae that offers many health benefits. It's often called nature's multivitamin, which is
05:56no surprise as it's rich in vitamin C, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, all nine essential amino acids,
06:05beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium, and folic acid.
06:14Furthermore, chlorella is touted for its ability to help the body detox heavy metals. Because of
06:20the close link between heavy metals and atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup in the arteries,
06:26chlorella is a unique supplement for keeping arteries healthy. Studies have also found that
06:32chlorella enhances the immune system, prevents oxidization of cholesterol, promotes healthy
06:38blood pressure, and improves blood sugar control, as well as many other benefits for the eyes,
06:45liver, gut, and more. For all of these reasons, chlorella is a super heart-friendly drink.
06:52It's a natural supplement, and while it may not taste so great, it's great for you.
06:58Choose a high-quality chlorella powder from a trusted supplier, and simply mix a teaspoon into water
07:04or a smoothie. Number nine, pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice is known for its tart flavor.
07:11It also has important health benefits, particularly for the heart. Studies show that regular consumption
07:18of pomegranate juice may reduce risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease.
07:24This includes improving artery health and blood sugar control. Research suggests that polyphenols,
07:32powerful antioxidants found in pomegranates, are responsible for these beneficial effects
07:37by reducing inflammation and improving blood flow to the heart muscle itself. Overall, drinking
07:43pomegranate juice regularly could be an excellent way to prevent many common cardiovascular problems,
07:50while enjoying some deliciousness at the same time. Number eight, red wine.
07:57Red wine is well known for its heart and blood health benefits. Moderate red wine consumption has
08:02been found to lessen the risks of cardiovascular disease. It contains polyphenols and antioxidants
08:09that support healthy cholesterol, which has a direct impact on heart and arterial health. Red wine
08:16polyphenols have been shown to improve fasting blood sugar levels. White wine also contains healthy
08:22polyphenols as well, but red wine contains far more, which is why red wine is frequently promoted as the
08:29healthier option. However, it is crucial to remember that excessive alcohol can result in various problems
08:36with liver and kidneys. So limit yourself to one or two drinks every day and choose a quality organic wine.
08:45Number seven, beetroot juice. Nothing beats the deep red color of fresh beetroot juice. Not only is it
08:53aesthetically pleasing, but studies show that drinking beetroot juice can do wonders for your heart health.
09:00One study found that consuming 250 milliliters of beetroot juice daily for four weeks was associated with
09:08reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels among people with hypertension. Nitrates in beetroot
09:15become nitric oxide once consumed, which causes arteries to relax and become more flexible, helping to
09:22stabilize blood pressure and prevent artery damage. Another study found that drinking beetroot juice improved
09:28blood flow to the brain, and that beetroot juice may help to prevent dementia and other cognitive decline.
09:34Furthermore, the potassium in beetroot helps to protect nerves and aid healthy muscle function,
09:40and it has also been shown to support the liver and promote healthy cholesterol,
09:44making beetroot juice an excellent option to keep the whole body functioning optimally, with strong muscles
09:50and a good supply of clean blood throughout.

10:14Okay, let's get back to the list.
10:16Number six, kombucha.
10:19Kombucha is a fermented tea that has become very popular in recent years due to its wide-ranging health benefits.
10:26It has been linked to improving digestion, energy, and overall health.
10:31Studies suggest that regular consumption of kombucha may reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease,
10:37particularly when it comes to inflammation.
10:40Kombucha contains probiotics which aid gut health, and everything flows from there.
10:46Lower inflammation, better blood glucose control, improved blood lipids, healthier cholesterol particles,
10:53improved liver function, you name it, kombucha has an impact.
10:58You can make kombucha at home, or buy it from your trusted health store.
11:02Just be sure to check for added sugar.
11:05Number five, lemon water.
11:08First of all, lemons are a great source of vitamin C, which plays an important role in heart health,
11:15by reducing inflammation and protecting against oxidative stress.
11:19Additionally, lemons contain flavonoids, plant compounds with strong antioxidant properties,
11:25which can reduce risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease,
11:29such as damaged cholesterol and blood pressure problems.
11:33Furthermore, lemon water can change the way you digest food.
11:37According to research published in the European Journal of Nutrition,
11:41drinking lemon water while eating was connected with 30% lower blood glucose levels
11:47as compared to drinking plain water.
11:49Lemon decreases the glycemic response by raising the pH of food and slowing digestion,
11:56meaning that glucose enters the bloodstream more gradually and prevents harmful blood sugar spikes,
12:02which can cause damage to blood vessels and contribute to heart disease.
12:07Number four, ginger tea.
12:09Ginger tea is another centuries-old drink that has long been used for its health benefits.
12:15Ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and digestive benefits.
12:21Its cardioprotective effects include improving the heart's ability to beat efficiently,
12:26also known as cardiotonic improvement,
12:30alleviating high blood pressure, improving blood lipid profiles,
12:34and countering abnormal blood clotting.
12:37In a 12-week study, type 2 diabetics consumed 2 grams of ginger powder each day.
12:43At the end of the study, their HbA1c levels reduced by an average of 10%,
12:49while markers of oxidative stress reduced a whopping 28%.
12:54Ginger tea is also a great drink for aiding weight loss and improving digestive problems,
13:00as well as boosting immunity and protecting against bacterial infections.
13:06To make ginger tea, simply grate fresh ginger root and pour boiling water over.
13:11You may also like to add a squeeze of lemon, and a dash of our next ingredient.
13:16Number three, apple cider vinegar.
13:19Apple cider vinegar has been popularized as a natural remedy for many ailments, including heart
13:26health. You don't want to drink a lot, but a teaspoon in your ginger tea or in a glass of water
13:32can make a big difference. It's a great way to start the day, cleansing the digestive system.
13:38It's also a great thing to add to salad dressings and sauces.
13:42Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acids, which reduce enzymes that contribute to high blood pressure.
13:48Additionally, several studies suggest that apple cider vinegar can improve blood sugar regulation
13:54and insulin sensitivity in individuals with type 2 diabetes, in turn reducing the risk of heart
14:01disease, stroke, and other complications associated with high glucose.
14:06Apple cider vinegar can negatively affect tooth enamel, so it's advised to drink it through a straw,
14:13rinse with water afterwards, and avoid brushing your teeth immediately after drinking it.
14:18That might sound like a lot of work, but it's worth it for all the potent health benefits that apple
14:23cider vinegar provides. Number two, tea.
14:27Tea is rich in healthy plant compounds like catechins and polyphenols, which are known for
14:33their anti-inflammatory and health-promoting effects. These substances support heart health by preventing
14:40oxidizing oxidization, reducing blood glucose, dilating blood vessels, and reducing stickiness in blood
14:47platelets. According to a 2012 study, data suggests that black and green tea may reduce the risk of both
14:55coronary heart disease and stroke by between 10 and 20 percent. Time and time again, the research highlights
15:03green tea as being the standout when it comes to health benefits. However, many types of tea bring unique benefits,
15:10including green tea, black tea, oolong tea, hibiscus tea, and chamomile tea.
15:17Hibiscus tea is an interesting one that has particular benefits for blood health. A clinical study including 390 participants
15:26looked at the impact of hibiscus tea on blood pressure, and found that drinking hibiscus tea reduced
15:32systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure by up to 95 percent. That's because of hibiscus tea's
15:39unique profile of polyphenols and anthocyanins, the compounds which give it its dark color, and are
15:46powerful at decreasing inflammation, free radicals, and blood lipids. So sit back and enjoy a cuppa.
15:54Fill your cupboard with a variety of teas, and know that every cup is doing your heart good.
16:00Okay, number 1. Water. Drinking plenty of water is essential for a healthy heart. Water helps to
16:09keep your circulatory system running efficiently, which can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
16:15Water also helps maintain a healthy balance of electrolytes and minerals in your body,
16:21which are necessary for proper functioning of the heart muscles.
16:25Additionally, drinking enough water can help reduce high blood pressure,
16:29an important factor in preventing stroke and other serious cardiac conditions.
16:34Water should be the default option, and is vital for keeping your body running smoothly.
16:40Opt for high quality water if you can, avoiding chlorinated water,
16:45and drinking pure mineral water if possible, as studies show that mineral water is particularly
16:51good for detoxifying the blood and reducing blood pressure.
