00:00:30First, a middleweight championship fight
00:00:45between the undisputed champion Marvin Hagler and Mustafa Hamshol
00:00:49and then a WBA heavyweight championship fight
00:00:51between the champion Mike Weaver and James Quick Tillis.
00:01:00Live from the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, Illinois,
00:01:08HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing.
00:01:12First, the WBA-WBC middleweight champion of the world, Marvin Hagler,
00:01:16defends his crown against the WBC's number one ranked contender, Mustafa Hamshol.
00:01:23Hello, everybody. I'm Barry Tompkins,
00:01:25along with the undisputed welterweight champion of the world, Sugar Ray Leonard,
00:01:28and, of course, our longtime boxing cohort here on HBO, Larry Merchant.
00:01:32We've got a doubleheader for you tonight.
00:01:34First, going to talk about the Marvin Hagler-Mustafa Hamshol fight.
00:01:37Ray, I think it's a fact that Marvin Hagler has been troubled in the past
00:01:40by people who crowd him.
00:01:41Vito Antifermo, to name one,
00:01:43he's going to get that same kind of fighter tonight in Mustafa Hamshol.
00:01:46Barry, without question, Hamshol will be the aggressor.
00:01:49He'll come in trying to brawl and try to roughhouse Hagler
00:01:53because that's all his style permits him to do.
00:01:55But, on the other hand, I think we're going to see a boxing Hagler,
00:01:59a guy that's on the move and trying to find a solution to take care of Hamshol.
00:02:05Well, even though Hagler has been troubled by guys who really rush at him,
00:02:08nonetheless, Marvin Hagler, in the times that you and I have seen him,
00:02:11has been the master of all.
00:02:13He's the straighter puncher.
00:02:14He's more resourceful defensively.
00:02:16He's going to try to ward off Hamshol.
00:02:20Hamshol's job, really, is to keep pressing, stay right inside him,
00:02:24join him at the head like Siamese twins,
00:02:27and then, in the last six or seven rounds, try to out-hustle him.
00:02:31Well, Mustafa Hamshol is a guy whose record is virtually unscathed.
00:02:34For him, this is a very, very big opportunity indeed.
00:02:38For the champion, Marvin Hagler,
00:02:40Hamshol is a guy who is simply in his way.
00:02:42Mustafa Hamshol is the number-one-ranked WBC middleweight contender.
00:02:48His rise to the top began on June 15, 1980,
00:02:51when he won by default over Wilfred Sipion.
00:02:54It was in the tenth round when Sipion went flying through the ropes.
00:02:57After being counted out, Sipion went to his dressing room
00:03:00and was disqualified when Michigan boxing officials ordered the fight to resume.
00:03:04But Sipion was unable to return to the ring.
00:03:06Then on February 15 of this year, there was more controversy.
00:03:10Hamshol won a hotly debated split decision
00:03:12over highly regarded Curtis Parker
00:03:13to move one step closer to a shot at Marvin Hagler's crown.
00:03:17The Syrian buzzsaw had won his 31st consecutive fight
00:03:20and had just one more hurdle before he would be granted a title fight.
00:03:28June 6, 1981.
00:03:30Mustafa Hamshol had to beat former champion Alan Minter
00:03:33to earn a date with marvelous Marvin Hagler.
00:03:36It was another split decision,
00:03:37but this time a hungrier Mustafa Hamshol was clearly the victor.
00:03:41There was no doubt that the Syrian middleweight
00:03:43was deserving of a long-awaited dream,
00:03:45a shot at the middleweight champion of the world.
00:03:48It was a dream which Marvin Hagler knew very well.
00:03:51It was on November 30th of 1979
00:03:53when Marvin Hagler challenged middleweight champion Vito Antifermo
00:03:57in one of the most memorable and controversial battles in boxing history.
00:04:02Even though most ringside observers gave the fight to Hagler,
00:04:04it was ruled a draw.
00:04:06Vito Antifermo retained the title,
00:04:08and a disappointed Marvin was forced to sit and wait.
00:04:15Finally, on September 27th, 1980,
00:04:18Marvin Hagler had his second shot at the title.
00:04:20Now Alan Minter was the undisputed champion.
00:04:23But after three brutal rounds of boxing,
00:04:25Marvin Hagler had fulfilled his lifelong mission.
00:04:28The middleweight crown was all his,
00:04:30and not even a showering of beer bottles
00:04:32by irate British fight fans
00:04:34could disrupt this moment of glory.
00:04:42Then, on January 17th of 1981,
00:04:45in Boston Garden,
00:04:46Marvelous Marvin won his first title defense
00:04:48against Fulgencio Obelmajias.
00:04:51The fight was stopped in the eighth round
00:04:52as Marvin sent out a message to the boxing world.
00:04:55He had worked too long
00:04:56and too hard for his two championship belts.
00:04:59His motto was to destroy those brave enough
00:05:02to try and take them away.
00:05:06And finally, revenge.
00:05:08It was June 13th this year
00:05:10when Marvin avenged a bitter draw
00:05:11with Vito the Mosquito.
00:05:13It was a night of controversy
00:05:14as each man accused the other of repeated budding.
00:05:18Freddie Brown would not let Vito Antifermo
00:05:20answer the bell for the fifth round,
00:05:21and Marvin Hagler retained the crown
00:05:23he so desperately wants to keep.
00:05:29Which brings us to tonight
00:05:32as Marvin Hagler defends
00:05:33his undisputed middleweight crown
00:05:35against the number one-ranked WBC contender
00:05:38Mustafa Hamshow.
00:05:43So it is the middleweight championship
00:05:44of the world here
00:05:45as Mustafa Hamshow comes into the ring.
00:05:48Marvin Hagler the champion,
00:05:49Mustafa Hamshow as you see
00:05:51the WBC's number one-ranked contender.
00:05:54And here is the psychological end of things
00:05:56which we'll talk about
00:05:56right after we look at the table of the tape.
00:05:58Hagler, of course, two years
00:05:59the senior of Hamshow.
00:06:00Otherwise, rather comparable
00:06:02if there's any kind of a surprise, Larry.
00:06:03It's that Hagler came in
00:06:04a little lighter than expected.
00:06:06He came in very light.
00:06:07One interpretation is that
00:06:09since he has had some problems
00:06:11with his stamina
00:06:12against this type of fighter in the past
00:06:14that he worked extra hard
00:06:16and he is a very hard worker to begin with.
00:06:19The Hamshow people are saying
00:06:21maybe he left his fight in the gym.
00:06:23Take a look at some of the common opponents
00:06:25and there have been many.
00:06:25Cove Green, of course,
00:06:26we all know and love him.
00:06:28Alan Minter, probably the most known
00:06:30of the common opponents.
00:06:31Ironically, Boogaloo Watts
00:06:33who was knocked out in seven rounds
00:06:34by Mustafa Hamshow
00:06:36beat Marvin Hagler
00:06:37but Hagler, as you can see,
00:06:38came back and knocked out Watts
00:06:40in two rounds.
00:06:41But Alan Minter really probably
00:06:42the most likely common denominator
00:06:44and I think Hagler
00:06:45had an easier time with him, Ray,
00:06:46than did Hamshow.
00:06:47Well, guys like Hamshow,
00:06:49they're aggressive fighters,
00:06:52pretty much brawl-type fighters
00:06:54and it's very difficult
00:06:55to fight guys of that style.
00:06:57Ray, I want to ask you too,
00:06:58here's the great psychological game.
00:06:59You didn't let this happen
00:07:00in your fight with Tommy Hearns
00:07:02but it's happening right now
00:07:03to Mustafa Hamshow.
00:07:04He's got to sit and wait.
00:07:05Well, this is the biggest moment
00:07:07of Hamshow's life.
00:07:08I mean, to fight for a world championship
00:07:10and to actually wait.
00:07:12And you know, you see all the people
00:07:13that are here,
00:07:14it gets to you.
00:07:15Your butterflies begin to multiply.
00:07:18He has, however,
00:07:19two very experienced men with him
00:07:22who manage and train him.
00:07:24Al Braverman,
00:07:26one of the great colorful characters
00:07:28in boxing.
00:07:31Patty Flood, another one.
00:07:33The last time they were in
00:07:34a championship corner
00:07:36was Chuck Wepner,
00:07:38the original Rocky,
00:07:40when he fought Muhammad Ali.
00:07:42The Bayonne Bleeder, of course.
00:07:43I think you saw an interesting graphic there
00:07:45of the most recent action
00:07:46for Mustafa Hamshow.
00:07:48And the one that really jumps out
00:07:49at me, at least,
00:07:50is the fight with Curtis Parker.
00:07:51That was a very, very questioned decision.
00:07:54It was a split decision
00:07:55that Hamshow got.
00:07:57He's had a few close decisions
00:07:59but he manages to win them.
00:08:02Interested observer here in Chicago,
00:08:04Muhammad Ali,
00:08:04who you can just see his eyes
00:08:06picking up over the top of the head.
00:08:08He, of course,
00:08:08still a very popular figure,
00:08:09although now I would have to think
00:08:10he is taking a back seat
00:08:11to the guy between us, Larry.
00:08:13Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:08:15Another interested spectator here,
00:08:18if we can get a hold of him,
00:08:19is Tony Zale.
00:08:20Who you're seeing right there
00:08:22is Mustafa Hamshow's mother
00:08:24who flew all the way from Syria
00:08:26to see her son fight.
00:08:28The first time she will have seen him fight.
00:08:31Mustafa Hamshow lost
00:08:32his first professional fight.
00:08:34They say it was to a light heavyweight
00:08:36in the light heavyweight's hometown.
00:08:38And he hasn't lost since then.
00:08:40And like him,
00:08:42Hagler hasn't lost in five years either.
00:08:44So, both of them know how to win.
00:08:46I was mentioning Tony Zale before.
00:08:48Zale, probably the last great hometown hero in Chicago,
00:08:53although he came from nearby Gary, Indiana.
00:08:55Marvin Hagler making his way now down the stairs
00:09:05in the ante room to the horizon here.
00:09:08Looking very loose, very calm.
00:09:10He has made his man sit and wait for a long time.
00:09:13That's a great cooling out period,
00:09:14I would think, Ray,
00:09:15from Mustafa Hamshow.
00:09:17It is.
00:09:17As a matter of fact,
00:09:18I tried to do the same thing with Tommy Hearns,
00:09:20although I cooperated and came out a little sooner.
00:09:22And Hagler again looking calm
00:09:26and surrounded by his own people.
00:09:29The Petronelli brothers, of course.
00:09:30Steve Wainwright, the attorney from Boston.
00:09:32The crowd starts to catch its first glimpse
00:09:34of marvelous Marvin Hagler now.
00:09:36He is a very, very popular fighter.
00:09:38I find him, Larry, to be almost a throwback.
00:09:40He's a guy who's really dedicated,
00:09:42trains equally hard for everybody, I think.
00:09:44He's a very persistent human being
00:09:47because most fighters
00:09:48who had to go over the hurdles
00:09:51and through the obstacles he did
00:09:52would have given up a long time ago.
00:09:55He persisted and fought his way
00:09:56into the number one ranking
00:09:58and finally got his title shot.
00:10:01You know, we had thought here on HBO
00:10:03that he would come to Las Vegas
00:10:05to do the color on the fight
00:10:07between Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns,
00:10:10but he refused to take time off from his training.
00:10:13He has a great deal of dedication.
00:10:15Of course, he is the most popular fighter
00:10:17to come out of Brockton, Massachusetts
00:10:18since that heavyweight, Rocky Marciano.
00:10:20But he has really captured the folks
00:10:22up in Massachusetts,
00:10:23and I think you could tell
00:10:23from the fan reaction
00:10:25as he makes his way toward the ring now
00:10:26that he is the chosen right here in Chicago, too,
00:10:30at the Horizon.
00:10:31He's a very popular fighter.
00:10:32Been around a long time,
00:10:33had a lot of trouble getting fights.
00:10:34People just didn't want any part of him.
00:10:36And now, this, of course,
00:10:38is his third title defense
00:10:39as he comes into the ring now.
00:10:43And he has said at time and again himself
00:10:44that he will fight anybody, any time.
00:10:47The money is right.
00:10:48Now they say he won't fight
00:10:49for less than a million dollars.
00:10:50And Ray, I can't say I really blame him.
00:10:52He has not had the big paydays.
00:10:53Well, I think Hagler deserves the big paydays,
00:10:56and that's the reason I want to give an opportunity
00:10:57to make some big bucks.
00:10:59We're going to talk about that a little more
00:11:00as this fight goes on.
00:11:01Look at the experience.
00:11:02Marvin Hagler in his ninth year,
00:11:0356 fights.
00:11:04He has fought 318 rounds.
00:11:06So if experience is any part of it,
00:11:08I think you can see that Hagler has it all over.
00:11:10Right now, let's go up to the ring announcer
00:11:11for the introduction to the two fighters.
00:11:13Here's Ben Bentley.
00:11:16Ladies and gentlemen,
00:11:19the ring officials
00:11:21for this contest,
00:11:23your judges,
00:11:24Al Tremere,
00:11:26Mike Leanna,
00:11:29Timekeeper,
00:11:31Kenny Kinch,
00:11:32the referee Octavio
00:11:35Meron
00:11:37from Mexico City,
00:11:40and also a drink side,
00:11:43supervising official
00:11:44for the WBC,
00:11:46Sam Macias,
00:11:48and the WBA,
00:11:50Dr. Keith Arthur.
00:11:52And now,
00:11:5615 rounds
00:11:58for the undisputed
00:12:00World's Middleweight Championship.
00:12:05From Bayonne, New Jersey,
00:12:09he's wearing the green trunks
00:12:10with a white stripe.
00:12:13He's scaled 160 pounds,
00:12:16Mustafa Hamshul.
00:12:19Hamshul.
00:12:23His opponent
00:12:26from Brockton, Massachusetts.
00:12:29He's scaled 157 pounds.
00:12:33He's wearing the
00:12:35maroon trunks
00:12:37with a white stripe.
00:12:39The undisputed
00:12:40middleweight champion
00:12:42of the world,
00:12:43Marvin Hagler.
00:12:4416 rounds.
00:12:49Well, there is no choice
00:12:50as to who the public
00:12:51favorite is here.
00:12:52It is definitely
00:12:53the champion,
00:12:54Marvin Hagler.
00:12:54Here's another war
00:12:55going on right now.
00:12:58We ought to mention here
00:12:59that this is a
00:13:0010-point must system,
00:13:02the same system
00:13:03that was in use
00:13:04in Las Vegas
00:13:05two weeks ago,
00:13:06and we'll find out
00:13:07if the officials
00:13:08here in Chicago
00:13:08are more willing
00:13:10to give 10,
00:13:118,
00:13:11or 10,
00:13:127 rounds
00:13:12than they were
00:13:13in Las Vegas.
00:13:14And what Larry Merchant
00:13:15is referring to,
00:13:16of course,
00:13:16is the Sugar Ray Leonard
00:13:17fight with Thomas Hearns,
00:13:19and that is the fact
00:13:20that in rounds
00:13:206 and 7
00:13:21of that fight,
00:13:22Ray Leonard
00:13:22seemed to have won
00:13:23by a wide margin,
00:13:24and yet they were
00:13:25only scored 10-9,
00:13:26the same as some
00:13:26later rounds
00:13:27that were won
00:13:27by Thomas Hearns.
00:13:29You're going to see
00:13:30a lot of boxing
00:13:31from Hagler,
00:13:32because I think
00:13:33what he's going to do
00:13:33now,
00:13:33he's going to try
00:13:34to find out
00:13:34what is the most
00:13:35effective maneuver
00:13:38against Hamshaw.
00:13:41Hagler,
00:13:42of course,
00:13:42all business
00:13:43in the ring.
00:13:44Rarely will change
00:13:45expression.
00:13:46Hamshaw,
00:13:47we expect to come
00:13:47right at Marvin.
00:13:48Right now,
00:13:48they're at long range,
00:13:49feeling out period,
00:13:5030 seconds into
00:13:51round one,
00:13:52middleweight championship.
00:13:53First exchange.
00:13:54I just don't believe
00:13:58that Hamshaw has
00:13:58the tools
00:14:00to deal with
00:14:00a guy of
00:14:01Hagler's caliber.
00:14:03Hagler will switch
00:14:04hands on you,
00:14:05too.
00:14:05He'll go south,
00:14:06boy,
00:14:06he'll go the other way,
00:14:06he'll go every which way.
00:14:08Especially against
00:14:09a brawler like Hamshaw,
00:14:10just to confuse him
00:14:11a little bit.
00:14:14Hagler with a jab
00:14:15in Hamshaw's nose.
00:14:19You're going to see
00:14:20the experience
00:14:21factor here,
00:14:22because Hagler's
00:14:23going to box him,
00:14:24going to outmaneuver him,
00:14:26and Hagler's right jab
00:14:27is very effective there.
00:14:28He's going at will.
00:14:30Very sharp early on.
00:14:31Two jabs right there
00:14:33that Hamshaw tries
00:14:33to duck under at Kent.
00:14:34I don't believe
00:14:35Hagler has missed
00:14:36a right hand in the fight.
00:14:41Hamshaw has been
00:14:42prone to cut.
00:14:44Took 22 stitches
00:14:45after the fight
00:14:45with Wilfred Sipion.
00:14:50And again,
00:14:51a very,
00:14:52very sharp right hand
00:14:53and already
00:14:54the right side
00:14:55of Hamshaw's face
00:14:56a little bit red.
00:14:57Hamshaw's not used
00:14:58to a guy's
00:14:59fainting him,
00:15:00working body shots,
00:15:02moving side to side
00:15:03in lateral position,
00:15:04throwing constant
00:15:04left jab.
00:15:06Hamshaw's just not used
00:15:07to this kind of fighter.
00:15:09Well,
00:15:09admittedly,
00:15:10we're only about
00:15:11two minutes
00:15:11into the first round
00:15:12of this fight,
00:15:12but Hagler
00:15:13has looked
00:15:13extremely sharp.
00:15:14and scores
00:15:19twice again
00:15:20and comes
00:15:21with the left hand
00:15:21on the top
00:15:22of the head.
00:15:23And another
00:15:23good right hand
00:15:24that stands
00:15:25Hamshaw straight up.
00:15:29And another one.
00:15:31Going to run out
00:15:31of fingers
00:15:32pretty soon.
00:15:33There's not too many
00:15:33guys that can stand
00:15:34up to Marvin Hagler,
00:15:35and that's the reason
00:15:36I want to give him
00:15:36an opportunity
00:15:37to make some money.
00:15:38Well,
00:15:40he's managed
00:15:40to keep Hamshaw
00:15:41at long range
00:15:42right where he wants him.
00:15:43Hamshaw just simply
00:15:44cannot get inside
00:15:45that jab of Hagler.
00:15:47Coming up
00:15:47on the 30-second mark
00:15:48here,
00:15:49and Hagler draws
00:15:50a warning
00:15:50to keep his hands up.
00:15:54And a right hand
00:15:55stands him up again.
00:15:56Marvin Hagler
00:15:57looking extremely sharp
00:15:58here.
00:15:59Hamshaw tries
00:15:59to crowd him now,
00:16:01and Hagler covers up
00:16:02and gets out of there
00:16:02inside the 20-second mark
00:16:04round one.
00:16:08Hamshaw missing
00:16:16a counterpunch.
00:16:17Round one,
00:16:18all Marvin Hagler.
00:16:19Once again,
00:16:19the right hand
00:16:20from the right side
00:16:20of the face
00:16:21would come to the end
00:16:22of round one.
00:16:23All Marvin Hagler,
00:16:24I would have to think.
00:16:25Without a cell of a doubt.
00:16:27Let's take a look
00:16:28at Marvin Hagler,
00:16:29the middleweight champion
00:16:30of the world,
00:16:31and he showed why
00:16:32right in that first round.
00:16:34You won't see many
00:16:35better right jabs
00:16:36than that one.
00:16:38And you won't see many
00:16:47better silver
00:16:48than that one.
00:16:49Ha ha ha ha.
00:16:51Nice.
00:16:54Woo.
00:16:55Yeah, that's good.
00:16:56Speed.
00:16:57He's got it.
00:16:58He's got it.
00:17:01That's beautiful.
00:17:02Take him to school.
00:17:04Okay, Steve.
00:17:06Well, we saw him
00:17:07give a clinic in that
00:17:08first round,
00:17:09and obviously he pleased
00:17:11his handlers.
00:17:11They say,
00:17:12take him to school again.
00:17:13We're going into
00:17:14the second grade here.
00:17:16Well, I tell you what,
00:17:17when they write the book
00:17:18on boxing,
00:17:19it would be hard to write
00:17:19it any better
00:17:20than that first round.
00:17:24Round two,
00:17:25schedule 15 rounder,
00:17:26middleweight championship
00:17:27of the world.
00:17:27Hagler right to work
00:17:28with the right hand
00:17:29again against Hamshow.
00:17:30And a left hand scores,
00:17:32and Hagler goes after him.
00:17:33Hamshow swarming
00:17:34Hagler now against the rough.
00:17:35Showing a little
00:17:36offense of his own,
00:17:37but swinging wildly.
00:17:38This is the only way
00:17:39Hamshow would be effective.
00:17:41Going inside,
00:17:42clenching,
00:17:42tying him up,
00:17:43wrestling,
00:17:44clenching,
00:17:44holding,
00:17:45hitting.
00:17:45This is the only way
00:17:46he can fight.
00:17:47Hagler can change up.
00:17:49He's versatile,
00:17:49he can box,
00:17:50and most of all,
00:17:51he can punch.
00:17:53So Hamshow trying
00:17:54to get inside,
00:17:54being a little bit
00:17:55more effective early
00:17:56in the second round here,
00:17:57doing that,
00:17:57but he wasn't a first.
00:17:58Right hand catches Hamshow
00:17:59backing away.
00:18:07And again,
00:18:07a right hand
00:18:08to the side of the head
00:18:09of Hamshow,
00:18:09keeping him away,
00:18:10keeping him off balance.
00:18:11Left hand scores
00:18:12for Hagler.
00:18:14And another right hand,
00:18:16right to the nose.
00:18:25Once more,
00:18:26good stiff jab
00:18:26by Marvin Hagler,
00:18:27coming off a left hand
00:18:28by Hamshow
00:18:29that scored
00:18:29on the top
00:18:30of Hagler's head.
00:18:31Hagler's doing
00:18:32the right thing,
00:18:33keeping Hamshow
00:18:33on the outside
00:18:34of that jab,
00:18:35because inside
00:18:36is very dangerous
00:18:37because you can
00:18:37sustain a headbutt.
00:18:40Which, of course,
00:18:41was the case
00:18:41with Vito Antifermo
00:18:42against Marvin Hagler.
00:18:44And a left hand again
00:18:45sends Hamshow back.
00:18:47Hamshow trying
00:18:48to work inside,
00:18:49as Ray Leonard mentioned.
00:18:50That's really the only thing
00:18:51that he can try to do
00:18:52in sustaining
00:18:52any kind of offense,
00:18:53chopping left hand
00:18:54by Hamshow.
00:18:57You know,
00:18:57it's quite difficult
00:18:58fighting a guy
00:18:59like Hamshow inside
00:19:00because Hamshow
00:19:01is capable
00:19:01of throwing punches
00:19:02from any direction.
00:19:03He can hit you
00:19:04in the body
00:19:04in the back of the head.
00:19:06I'd rather fight him
00:19:07on the outside.
00:19:08Combination again
00:19:09stuns Hamshow.
00:19:11Right hand
00:19:11than a left cross.
00:19:20Hamshow has gotten
00:19:21much the worst
00:19:21of the early going here.
00:19:22Marvin Hagler
00:19:23looking extremely sharp.
00:19:25And Hamshow scores
00:19:26with a right hand.
00:19:29And a left hand
00:19:30with the nose
00:19:31of Marvin Hagler
00:19:31as Hamshow swarms him.
00:19:32And a good left hand
00:19:44again
00:19:44and an ease wobble
00:19:45for just a moment.
00:19:47Hamshow is a very durable
00:19:48fighter.
00:19:48He took,
00:19:49he's taken some good
00:19:50shots from Hagler
00:19:50although I think
00:19:51as the rounds progress
00:19:52it's going to take
00:19:54his toe completely.
00:19:56Another right hand
00:19:57getting right in
00:19:57on the chin
00:19:58of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:19:59Hamshow fights back,
00:20:00tries to swarm again,
00:20:01takes two shots,
00:20:02gives one.
00:20:03Hamshow the kind of guy
00:20:04who'll give up
00:20:04a couple of punches
00:20:05to get in a couple.
00:20:06He's been likened
00:20:06to Jake LaMotta,
00:20:07likened to Harry Griff.
00:20:14But as Larry Merchant
00:20:15mentioned,
00:20:15he's getting a boxing
00:20:16lesson right now
00:20:17from the champion
00:20:17Marvin Hagler.
00:20:22Let's go to
00:20:23Mustafa Hamshow's
00:20:24corner here.
00:20:28What's happening
00:20:28in that corner
00:20:29really is that
00:20:30he's getting encouragement
00:20:31from his handlers.
00:20:32to hang in there.
00:20:34Hang in there
00:20:35and try to wear
00:20:36the champion down
00:20:37so that he can
00:20:38be there to come on
00:20:40in the last half
00:20:41of the fight.
00:20:44You know Larry,
00:20:45I feel that
00:20:46Hagler's completely
00:20:47in control
00:20:48but I think it's
00:20:48going to be very
00:20:49tough for him
00:20:50because Hamshow
00:20:51is still in there.
00:20:53We're going to take
00:20:54a look at Hamshow
00:20:55trying to crowd Hagler
00:20:56early in that round.
00:20:57This is his best shot.
00:20:59Stick his head
00:20:59right in there.
00:21:00Come underneath.
00:21:01He's been landing
00:21:02more good body shots
00:21:04than anything else.
00:21:05Try to slow
00:21:07Hagler down.
00:21:08Maybe Hagler
00:21:08will spend himself
00:21:09by shooting
00:21:10too many punches
00:21:11in these early rounds.
00:21:12That's what he's
00:21:13betting on.
00:21:14It's a war of attrition
00:21:19from Mustafa Hamshow.
00:21:22Round three upcoming now.
00:21:24A little bit of swelling
00:21:25on the right side
00:21:26of Mustafa Hamshow's face
00:21:27and it has taken
00:21:28an awful lot
00:21:29of jabs.
00:21:36Another right hand
00:21:37catches him up
00:21:38on the left side
00:21:38of the face.
00:21:39A one-punch
00:21:42KO is not going
00:21:45to be the case here.
00:21:45I think Marvin
00:21:46is going to eventually
00:21:47put his punches together
00:21:48because I think
00:21:49it's going to take
00:21:49a series of punches
00:21:50to get Hamshow
00:21:51out of there.
00:21:52Marvin has rarely missed
00:21:54in the first two rounds
00:21:55here and we just get
00:21:56underway here in round three.
00:21:57It's been extremely sharp.
00:21:58The jab scoring
00:21:59between the guard
00:22:00of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:22:01More important,
00:22:02Hamshow has not been
00:22:03able to get inside
00:22:04and there was a butt
00:22:05and now blood shows.
00:22:06There's been a butt
00:22:07on the right side
00:22:09of Marvin Hagler's face.
00:22:10And there is a cut
00:22:11over the right eye
00:22:13of the champion
00:22:14on the butt.
00:22:15Marvin Hagler now says
00:22:16I've got to get down
00:22:18and do some business here.
00:22:19Well Hagler,
00:22:20he doesn't really know
00:22:21how serious that cut is
00:22:22and it can't get worse
00:22:23as the fight progress
00:22:24and what he wants
00:22:25to do now
00:22:26he's trying to get
00:22:26the fight out
00:22:27with as soon as possible.
00:22:31Blood continuing
00:22:32to show
00:22:33and it does,
00:22:34could get into the eye
00:22:35as Hamshow now
00:22:36tries to work on that.
00:22:38And I think you might
00:22:38have heard Marvin Hagler
00:22:39say come on,
00:22:40come on.
00:22:41It might be the first time
00:22:42in the fights
00:22:43that we've done
00:22:44with Marvin Hagler
00:22:44that I've actually
00:22:45seen him angry.
00:22:46I think Marvin
00:22:46is really angry right now.
00:22:48Well I think
00:22:49he can't afford
00:22:50to get angry
00:22:51because he's not missing.
00:22:52But Hagler's
00:22:53a superior fighter
00:22:54and I'm quite sure
00:22:55the experience
00:22:56will take his toll.
00:22:57I think there might
00:22:58be a cut
00:22:58on the right eye
00:22:59of Hamshow also.
00:23:04Not sure if that blood
00:23:05is coming from Marvin
00:23:05or from Hamshow
00:23:06but I believe
00:23:06it's from Hamshow
00:23:07alongside the right eye.
00:23:08Both fighters
00:23:09are cut at this present time
00:23:10and I've been quite biased
00:23:12as far as Hagler's
00:23:13concerned because
00:23:13I really want to fight
00:23:14because I look at him
00:23:15as being a great champion.
00:23:17And Marvin continues
00:23:18to talk to his man.
00:23:19I don't think Marvin
00:23:20wants to fool around.
00:23:21I think the cut on Hamshow
00:23:22right now is probably
00:23:23the more serious
00:23:24of the two.
00:23:25And Marvin is just fighting
00:23:27like a man possessed
00:23:28right now.
00:23:31Inside the one minute mark
00:23:32remaining here
00:23:33in round three.
00:23:36I think Marvin's
00:23:37getting a little bit
00:23:37tired of butts.
00:23:38It happened
00:23:38at the Fermo fight
00:23:40and it happens here
00:23:41in round three
00:23:41against Mustafa Hamshow.
00:23:43And Hagler remains
00:23:50very sharp.
00:23:52Right hand
00:23:52again scores.
00:23:54Hamshow sticks his tongue
00:23:55out at Hagler.
00:23:56Hamshow may be trying
00:23:57to work on the psyche
00:23:57of Marvin Hagler.
00:24:00I've never seen
00:24:01Marvin Hagler
00:24:02lose his cool
00:24:03and I'm not implying
00:24:03that he's lost it now
00:24:04but I do think
00:24:05he wants to get
00:24:06this over with.
00:24:14Couple of punches
00:24:15scoring there
00:24:16by Hamshow
00:24:16and Hagler
00:24:17comes right back at him.
00:24:18Five seconds remain.
00:24:21End of round three.
00:24:24We have a bloody war here.
00:24:27Let's go into the corner
00:24:28of Mustafa Hamshow
00:24:29and see how they
00:24:30handle that.
00:24:34Both fighters
00:24:35are in danger
00:24:36from these fights.
00:24:38Let's take a look
00:24:38at the butt
00:24:39and see if we catch it.
00:24:40Right there.
00:24:41Right there
00:24:42you saw the head
00:24:43of Hamshow.
00:24:44It was not a deliberate butt
00:24:45but it was as effective
00:24:46as a deliberate butt
00:24:48could be
00:24:48and it couldn't
00:24:50be important
00:24:51in this fight.
00:24:53To Hagler's credit
00:24:55he came steaming out
00:24:56after him
00:24:57when he felt that blood
00:24:58and went and
00:24:59drew blood
00:25:00from his opponent.
00:25:01You gotta bend
00:25:01with him
00:25:02and there is
00:25:02a banded hook.
00:25:03He's
00:25:03going
00:25:04for Hamshow's mom
00:25:05looking with concern
00:25:10at her son.
00:25:15Well both quarters
00:25:17are card added here
00:25:18between rounds.
00:25:21Hard to tell really
00:25:23whose cut
00:25:23is worse right now.
00:25:24It looks
00:25:24toward the end
00:25:25of the round
00:25:25Ray
00:25:25like it was Hamshow
00:25:26got the worst of it.
00:25:27Well this fight
00:25:28has gotten off
00:25:29to such a dynamite
00:25:30start
00:25:30and I will
00:25:31hit and see
00:25:31the fight
00:25:32stop going
00:25:32close.
00:25:34Round four
00:25:35and let's see
00:25:35how good
00:25:36the cut man
00:25:37in each corner
00:25:37Hamshow starts
00:25:38bleeding almost
00:25:38immediately.
00:25:39No blood showing
00:25:40from Hagler
00:25:40right now.
00:25:41Hagler gets right
00:25:42back to work.
00:25:43Combination by
00:25:44Hamshow
00:25:44scoring on Hagler.
00:25:53Hagler again
00:25:54peppering Hamshow
00:25:55with that jab.
00:25:56Keeping his man
00:25:57off balance
00:25:58and a right hand
00:25:58scores but a
00:25:59counterpunch
00:26:00by Hamshow
00:26:00scores on Hagler.
00:26:03Another right hand
00:26:04by Hagler
00:26:04to the side
00:26:05of the head
00:26:05of Hamshow.
00:26:06It's only been
00:26:06three and a half
00:26:07rounds but I'll
00:26:07tell you it's
00:26:08been an upbeat
00:26:09three and a half
00:26:10rounds here in
00:26:10the middle
00:26:11league championship.
00:26:11Hagler gets out
00:26:12of the ropes.
00:26:13He doesn't like
00:26:13it there.
00:26:14Hamshow bores in
00:26:15on him once again.
00:26:17Right hand
00:26:18scores by Hamshow
00:26:19to the side
00:26:19of the head
00:26:19of Hagler.
00:26:20Hamshow again
00:26:21swarming on his
00:26:22man.
00:26:23And now blood
00:26:24showing from the
00:26:25left eye as well.
00:26:26Maybe along the
00:26:27bridge of the nose
00:26:27of Hamshow.
00:26:34Now there's
00:26:35definitely a cut
00:26:35over the left
00:26:36eye as well as
00:26:36the right eye so
00:26:37this fight I would
00:26:38guess is not going
00:26:39to go a great deal
00:26:41longer as long as
00:26:42Hagler.
00:26:43Now the referee
00:26:44Octavio Moran
00:26:45stops things for a
00:26:46moment.
00:26:47He's going to ask
00:26:47the ring position
00:26:48here.
00:26:50And he is asking
00:26:51Hagler to go to
00:26:51the neutral point of
00:26:52this.
00:26:52This is not a knock
00:26:53down.
00:26:53The time will stop.
00:26:55And the ring position
00:26:56will come on to look
00:26:57at the eyes of
00:26:58Mustafa Hamshow.
00:27:09Hamshow says he's
00:27:10all right.
00:27:11Ring position is not so
00:27:12sure.
00:27:13And there is a lot of
00:27:14blood.
00:27:14It is from the left
00:27:16eye above the left
00:27:17eye of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:27:22Action continues.
00:27:23Hagler goes right to
00:27:24work on it.
00:27:25Hagler jabbing very
00:27:26effectively here.
00:27:27Blood from both eyes of
00:27:28the challenger.
00:27:29Hagler again sticking
00:27:30the right hand in the
00:27:31face of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:27:34At this point now
00:27:35this fight should be
00:27:35stopped.
00:27:36I don't think although
00:27:37a championship is great
00:27:38to have at this point
00:27:40now it's not worth
00:27:41your help.
00:27:44Hamshow has been like
00:27:45or rather Hagler has
00:27:45been like a surgeon
00:27:46here.
00:27:46There's no question
00:27:47about it.
00:27:48Again scores two more
00:27:49times.
00:27:50It's got to be
00:27:50affecting his vision.
00:27:51It is.
00:27:52The blood is flowing
00:27:53to his eyes.
00:27:55But again I take my
00:27:57head off to the guy.
00:27:57The guy is still
00:27:58fighting.
00:27:58He's still in there.
00:28:01Well game is a word
00:28:02that we overuse
00:28:03perhaps in the sport
00:28:04of boxing.
00:28:04I think you have to
00:28:05use it and use it
00:28:06accurately so on
00:28:07Mustafa Hamshow.
00:28:08Hagler really punishing
00:28:09him right here.
00:28:10Hamshow comes back
00:28:11with the right hand
00:28:11and scores with
00:28:12another right hand.
00:28:16And Hagler just
00:28:17continues to bang
00:28:18away now.
00:28:18Virtually at will.
00:28:20The crowd is on
00:28:20its feet and I think
00:28:21the crowd empathizes
00:28:23with Ray Leonard
00:28:23and myself and I'm
00:28:24quite sure our cohort
00:28:25are emerging in that
00:28:26this fight should not
00:28:27go on a great deal
00:28:28longer.
00:28:29The left eye does not
00:28:30seem to be bleeding
00:28:32any longer right now.
00:28:33Does not seem to be
00:28:34bothering.
00:28:35Most of the damage
00:28:35is on the right eye
00:28:36and he takes another
00:28:36good shot right on it
00:28:38and yet another by
00:28:39Hagler.
00:28:40Well we can see now
00:28:40that Hamshow is
00:28:41completely out of it.
00:28:42I mean as far as his
00:28:43vision is concerned.
00:28:44He's fighting from the
00:28:46heart but his vision
00:28:48is completely impaired.
00:28:49And Marvin Hagler
00:28:52as is his job
00:28:53continues to score
00:28:54almost at will
00:28:55on the face
00:28:55of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:28:59Hamshow dead game
00:29:00but
00:29:00we come to the end
00:29:03of round four.
00:29:04Very very damaging
00:29:05round.
00:29:10Let's see if we can hear
00:29:11what's going on
00:29:12in Mustafa Hamshow's
00:29:13corner.
00:29:13Yeah.
00:29:14Close.
00:29:18Drink this water
00:29:19in Mustafa.
00:29:19Wait.
00:29:20Wait.
00:29:22Drink it.
00:29:23We're not going
00:29:23too long in Mustafa.
00:29:26You cut and you
00:29:27didn't get off
00:29:28and that was your
00:29:28problem.
00:29:29You didn't bend
00:29:29and you didn't get off.
00:29:30Close.
00:29:31Don't move.
00:29:35It's all set up.
00:29:36Okay sir.
00:29:37It's alright doc.
00:29:38It's really good.
00:29:39Let me get the stuff in.
00:29:40Looks good.
00:29:40He's getting tired.
00:29:41It's alright.
00:29:41I'm going to give
00:29:41one round.
00:29:42It ain't too bad.
00:29:43I'm going to give
00:29:43him a round shot.
00:29:44If he gets voice
00:29:45we'll stop it.
00:29:46We'll stop it.
00:29:47No.
00:29:47Don't stop it.
00:29:48Then you go
00:29:48and knock him out
00:29:49this round
00:29:50and I'm going
00:29:50to stop it.
00:29:51No.
00:29:52No.
00:29:52If you can go
00:29:52and knock him out
00:29:53this round
00:29:54and try all the way
00:29:55I'm going to stop it.
00:29:55You're not
00:29:56happy then?
00:29:58You go out.
00:29:58You go out.
00:29:59It speaks for itself.
00:30:00You heard Hamshow
00:30:01saying no
00:30:02don't stop it.
00:30:03You got to go all
00:30:03the way.
00:30:05Al Braverman
00:30:06who normally
00:30:06is very excitable
00:30:07picked that moment
00:30:08to be very calm
00:30:10because he knew
00:30:10he had to be.
00:30:11And he told
00:30:12Mustafa Hamshow
00:30:13you just got to
00:30:14get out and do it
00:30:14right now
00:30:15because if you don't
00:30:15I'm going to
00:30:16stop the fight.
00:30:16That's exactly
00:30:17what Hamshow
00:30:18is trying to do.
00:30:20You know
00:30:20you see a movie
00:30:21like a Rocky
00:30:22and that's all
00:30:23let's pretend
00:30:23and here it's just
00:30:24about the same scene
00:30:25going on in the corner
00:30:26and this is for real
00:30:27folks.
00:30:28Well Hamshow
00:30:28is trying to stop
00:30:29the fight
00:30:29from the very beginning
00:30:30and we see
00:30:31Bob is still in there.
00:30:32All you're going
00:30:33to see now
00:30:33is pretty much
00:30:34a boxing vest.
00:30:34You're going to see
00:30:35Bob with his greatest
00:30:36talent
00:30:37just complete
00:30:39outmaneuvering
00:30:39landing punches
00:30:40putting his punches
00:30:41together quite well
00:30:42and just taking
00:30:43Hamshow apart
00:30:44of the stage.
00:30:47Hagler just kind
00:30:48of pacing himself
00:30:48now.
00:30:49Hagler knows
00:30:50he's got the fight
00:30:50virtually won
00:30:51barring the
00:30:52totally unforeseen.
00:30:56Cutman in Hamshow's
00:30:58corner
00:30:58obviously doing
00:30:59a pretty good job
00:31:00because we are
00:31:00almost a minute
00:31:01into this round
00:31:02and there is really
00:31:02not a great deal
00:31:04of blood
00:31:04and he was cut
00:31:05pretty seriously
00:31:06on both eyes
00:31:07and there's a shot
00:31:09that opens it up
00:31:09again on the left eye.
00:31:11The right eye
00:31:12seems to be cut
00:31:13underneath the eye
00:31:14and the left eye
00:31:15above the eye.
00:31:17There has been
00:31:17no further blood
00:31:18on the face
00:31:19of Marvin Hagler
00:31:20following the butt.
00:31:21I like what I see
00:31:22of Marvin.
00:31:23He's boxing
00:31:23he's utilizing
00:31:24the whole ring
00:31:25and when he has
00:31:26an opportunity
00:31:27to take control
00:31:28he stands there
00:31:29and releases
00:31:29combinations.
00:31:33Marvin doesn't
00:31:34want to do anything.
00:31:35to get in any more
00:31:37close in contact
00:31:39than he has to
00:31:39because of the butt.
00:31:40Right hand
00:31:40right on the chin
00:31:41of Hamshow that time.
00:31:43But there really
00:31:43is not as much blood
00:31:44in this round
00:31:45on the face of Hamshow
00:31:46as there was in the last
00:31:47although the right eye
00:31:48now showing
00:31:49quite a lot of blood.
00:31:55Hagler realizing
00:31:56he's in control
00:31:57is back to being
00:31:58the taskmaster
00:31:59that he was early.
00:32:00I think it was obvious
00:32:01that he got angry
00:32:02after the butt.
00:32:03Not so much
00:32:03I don't believe
00:32:04in Hamshow
00:32:04but just at the situation
00:32:06because it was
00:32:06two fights in a row.
00:32:19Blood showing
00:32:20under the left eye
00:32:21of Hamshow now
00:32:22as well as
00:32:22on top of the left eye.
00:32:24Short right hand
00:32:25that I'm amazed
00:32:26Hamshow can stand up
00:32:27under.
00:32:27That was a heck
00:32:28of a punch.
00:32:29And again
00:32:37a short right hand
00:32:38scoring on the side
00:32:38of the head
00:32:39of Mustafa Hamshow.
00:32:42Marvin is
00:32:42he's in complete control
00:32:44now.
00:32:44He's doing
00:32:45whatever he wants
00:32:45to do.
00:32:48Not a punch
00:32:48to the right hand
00:32:49by Hagler
00:32:50that time
00:32:50and virtually
00:32:51every punch
00:32:51that Marvin throws
00:32:52the scoring.
00:32:55Two jabs
00:32:56to the nose
00:32:56of Hamshow.
00:32:58Hamshow tries
00:32:59a lunging right hand
00:33:00and misses.
00:33:02And Hamshow
00:33:03is going to get
00:33:03through this round.
00:33:11Let's take a look
00:33:12at both fighters
00:33:13in their corners now.
00:33:14The cut over
00:33:16Hagler's right eye
00:33:17seems to be giving him
00:33:19no trouble at all.
00:33:21Let's try to listen
00:33:22to Hamshow's corner
00:33:23as the ring position
00:33:25comes up
00:33:25to jam the eye.
00:33:27Actually his eye
00:33:28looks better
00:33:28than it had
00:33:29for the last two rounds
00:33:30in that round.
00:33:32Let me work
00:33:33down.
00:33:33Stay still.
00:33:34Let me work
00:33:34down.
00:33:35No problem.
00:33:38What the fuck?
00:33:39I've never seen
00:33:40you so bad.
00:33:41Look at me.
00:33:42Do you want me to go?
00:33:44No.
00:33:44Well then God damn it
00:33:45do what you gotta do.
00:33:47You don't even go
00:33:48and you're letting him
00:33:49get off fights
00:33:49on you every time.
00:33:50Give him his mouthpiece.
00:33:52Give him his mouthpiece
00:33:53but give me that.
00:33:54Take him to school man.
00:33:56Okay.
00:33:57Take him to school man.
00:33:58Let's go Steve.
00:33:59Come on.
00:33:59The last great fight
00:34:00held in Chicago
00:34:0123 years ago
00:34:02Secretary Robinson
00:34:04and Carmen D'Cilio.
00:34:05And D'Cilio's left eye
00:34:07was completely shut
00:34:08and bleeding.
00:34:09He looked like a cyclops
00:34:10and he went 15 rounds.
00:34:12And Mustafa Hamshou
00:34:15just trying to emulate
00:34:16that if he possibly can here.
00:34:18And I think you heard
00:34:19his corner there
00:34:19just kind of exhorting him
00:34:21to get Gittin'
00:34:22and doing so
00:34:23because of the cut.
00:34:24Not in spite of it
00:34:25but because of it.
00:34:27The bleeding
00:34:28seems to have stopped
00:34:29a little bit.
00:34:30And he just slammed
00:34:31the critical shot
00:34:32on Hazard's chin.
00:34:34But getting back to the cuts
00:34:35they don't look as bad
00:34:36as they did from the start.
00:34:37Cornermen doing a good job
00:34:40on Hamshou.
00:34:44I just don't like blood.
00:34:46Most particularly your own.
00:34:52Looping right hand
00:34:53by Hamshou.
00:34:54Trying to get off first
00:34:56and that's what you heard
00:34:57Braverman telling him.
00:34:59You're letting him
00:35:00get off first
00:35:01and that is exactly
00:35:01what's been happening
00:35:02since the opening bell.
00:35:03It has nothing to do
00:35:04with the cuts.
00:35:05Four punches
00:35:06the scoring by Hagler.
00:35:08Hagler's jab
00:35:09would do more damage
00:35:10than a good left hand
00:35:11because it's consistent
00:35:13and it makes the cut worse.
00:35:16It opens the cut up.
00:35:22Plus you have a better chance
00:35:23of setting Hamshou up
00:35:25for a combination.
00:35:26Hamshou just trying
00:35:27to get on top of his man
00:35:28get in close
00:35:29and of course
00:35:30that doesn't help
00:35:30the cuts at all.
00:35:31Hagler goes downstairs
00:35:40that time
00:35:41and another left hand
00:35:44but Hagler really
00:35:45has not been able
00:35:46to really hurt Hamshou
00:35:47and he's hit him
00:35:48with every punch
00:35:48he's got
00:35:49and again
00:35:51not a lot of blood
00:35:52on the face
00:35:53of Mustafa Hamshou.
00:35:54Much worse
00:35:55in the third round.
00:35:56This guy Hamshou
00:35:57is unbelievable.
00:35:58I mean he's
00:35:58he's taken a barrage
00:36:00of good solid punches
00:36:01from Hagler
00:36:01but he still comes
00:36:02he's still in there.
00:36:03Hagler stood him
00:36:04straight up
00:36:04that time
00:36:05with an uppercut
00:36:06and more blood shows
00:36:07to the left side
00:36:08of the face
00:36:09of Mustafa Hamshou.
00:36:10Hamshou still tries
00:36:11to bore inside
00:36:12on him.
00:36:13Hagler pushes him
00:36:14away and uppercuts him.
00:36:15He has scored
00:36:15consistently with that.
00:36:17A little bit of blood
00:36:27showing on the side
00:36:28of the face
00:36:28of Marvin Hagler
00:36:29once again now.
00:36:30I think again
00:36:31that came from
00:36:32contact inside.
00:36:36Hamshou also looks
00:36:37to be a little bit
00:36:38tired right now.
00:36:4420 seconds remaining
00:36:45in round 6.
00:36:46middleweight championship
00:36:47at the Horizon Chicago.
00:36:48Right hand counterpunched
00:36:49by Hagler.
00:36:56So when Hamshou
00:36:56does get off first
00:36:57Hagler counterpunches him.
00:37:04Another right hand
00:37:05into round 6.
00:37:08Ray, three hours ago
00:37:10you were saying you thought
00:37:11it should end.
00:37:12You think now you're
00:37:13a little premature.
00:37:15I think I was.
00:37:17I've never seen a thing
00:37:18I've seen before.
00:37:19I mean, Hamshou's
00:37:21taken Hagler's best shots.
00:37:24He's dealt with the cuts.
00:37:26And he's still coming
00:37:27to hang in there
00:37:27very strongly.
00:37:28In that round,
00:37:31which we can't say
00:37:32that Hagler didn't win,
00:37:34Hamshou was actually
00:37:35getting to him a little bit.
00:37:36We're getting to the middle
00:37:38of the fight.
00:37:39Let's see if that stamina
00:37:40means anything.
00:37:43Well, I think it's going to
00:37:43exchange left hooks there.
00:37:47Stamina's going to pay off
00:37:48here because these guys
00:37:49are really throwing
00:37:49a lot of combination.
00:37:50They're inside.
00:37:51They're roughing each other up.
00:37:55Punch, punch.
00:37:56He's dogging it now.
00:37:57He's dogging it.
00:37:58He's cut.
00:38:00Deep breath.
00:38:01Come on, deep breath.
00:38:02Come on, deep breath.
00:38:03He's cut.
00:38:03Come on, deep breath.
00:38:04You hear Al Braverman.
00:38:08Urging his fighter on.
00:38:10That's his job.
00:38:11Come to round seven.
00:38:12Hamshou's corner
00:38:13has done an outstanding job.
00:38:15They've remained calm.
00:38:16They've pretty much
00:38:16stopped the bleeding.
00:38:18They have done
00:38:19an outstanding job.
00:38:26And a good sharp jab
00:38:28by Hamshou.
00:38:29He's still got something left.
00:38:33And this time,
00:38:46Hagler has opened up
00:38:47the eye once again
00:38:47of Mustafa Hamshou.
00:38:50Hagler seems to be
00:38:51pacing up a little bit
00:38:52here in round seven.
00:38:53Well, I'm impressed
00:38:54with both of them.
00:38:54I'm impressed with Hagler
00:38:55and his talent,
00:38:56the way he's
00:38:56he lies in the ring.
00:38:58He's worked his combinations.
00:39:00I'm impressed with Hamshou.
00:39:02He knows he just
00:39:03stuck his tongue out
00:39:03with his eyes tough.
00:39:09Well, the crowd here
00:39:10really picking up
00:39:11the tempo
00:39:11as well as the fighters.
00:39:14Hagler continues
00:39:14to circle his man,
00:39:16not waste any punches.
00:39:17Score with most of the punches
00:39:19that he's throwing.
00:39:22Referee Octavio Miran
00:39:23taking a quick close look
00:39:25at the eyes
00:39:25of Mustafa Hamshou now
00:39:27which are bleeding
00:39:27a little bit more.
00:39:28Let's go.
00:39:30Let's go.
00:39:32Hagler just working
00:39:36his man,
00:39:36circling him to the left.
00:39:39Counterpunks
00:39:40with the right hand,
00:39:40scores on the face
00:39:41of Hamshou.
00:39:42You know,
00:39:43one thing that's
00:39:43played off for Hagler
00:39:44is that he's always
00:39:45in shape because
00:39:46they had such
00:39:47a fast pace drawing
00:39:48and normally a fight
00:39:49would be completely
00:39:50exhausted
00:39:51at this pace here.
00:39:52Good indication
00:39:53of just what you
00:39:53were talking about
00:39:54in the last round race.
00:39:55Two quick jabs
00:39:56opened up the right eye
00:39:57once again
00:39:57of Mustafa Hamshou.
00:39:58The jab opens
00:40:00the cut
00:40:01and it continues
00:40:02to bleed
00:40:02and blinds the opponent.
00:40:08A little blood
00:40:08showing on the side
00:40:09of the eye
00:40:10once more
00:40:10of Marvin Hagler.
00:40:16You know,
00:40:17Hagler went downstairs
00:40:18and I think
00:40:18his stunned
00:40:19Hamshou for a second.
00:40:22Hagler being
00:40:23very workmanlike,
00:40:24very effective,
00:40:25up on his toes now.
00:40:26You and I
00:40:39talked in your fight.
00:40:41When you do get
00:40:41cut like that,
00:40:42sometimes it affects
00:40:43the peripheral vision,
00:40:44the vision to the side.
00:40:45I know you've
00:40:46concerned yourself
00:40:46with that in your fight
00:40:47with Thomas Ernst.
00:40:48I can't help but wonder
00:40:49if that's not what's
00:40:49happening to Hamshou
00:40:51right now and Hagler
00:40:52seems to be taking
00:40:52advantage of him.
00:40:53Yes, he has had
00:40:54the experience
00:40:54to take full advantage
00:40:55of the opportunity.
00:41:00And there's a right hand
00:41:01that sends him
00:41:02to a wheelie.
00:41:03Hamshou comes right
00:41:03back up and sticks
00:41:04his tongue out.
00:41:05And around seven.
00:41:10Well, I don't know
00:41:11what it does
00:41:12when a fighter
00:41:13lands his best punch
00:41:15and the other guy
00:41:15sticks his tongue
00:41:16out at him,
00:41:17but it couldn't have
00:41:18done the other fighter
00:41:19any good either.
00:41:20But you know something,
00:41:21if Mike trains this to me,
00:41:22Mike, don't ever let me
00:41:23fight this guy Hamshou.
00:41:24No way.
00:41:30We're going to take a look
00:41:31at those punches
00:41:32right here at the end
00:41:33of the round.
00:41:35Solid right hand
00:41:36and bang,
00:41:37he comes right back
00:41:38with it.
00:41:40This is a different
00:41:41Hagler than we have seen.
00:41:43Most fighters move
00:41:45away from him
00:41:45and he has to press
00:41:47the attack.
00:41:48Here we see him
00:41:48dancing, coming in,
00:41:50throwing combinations
00:41:50and doing a textbook
00:41:51job early in the round
00:41:53here.
00:41:54Just doing it as well
00:41:56as he can.
00:41:59Here you go, Mike.
00:42:00Yep.
00:42:01Let's go.
00:42:02Grab this chair.
00:42:05Come on.
00:42:06Well, there is no
00:42:07questioning the fitness
00:42:08of these two fighters.
00:42:09There is no questioning
00:42:10the gamesmanship
00:42:11of these two fighters.
00:42:12Hagler comes right out
00:42:13with the right-hand lead.
00:42:15I think it got a pretty
00:42:15good indication
00:42:16of what kind of a punch
00:42:17Hamshou could take
00:42:18in that replay
00:42:18that you just saw
00:42:19between rounds.
00:42:21Hagler had his man
00:42:22off balance
00:42:22and hit him a ton
00:42:24with the right hand
00:42:24and Hamshou didn't go down.
00:42:26Back against the ropes
00:42:27goes Hamshou now.
00:42:28Telling Hagler,
00:42:29come on, come on,
00:42:29let's get hit.
00:42:35You know, normally
00:42:36you can tell
00:42:36if a fighter is hurt
00:42:37by watching his legs,
00:42:39you know,
00:42:39there's a little jerk
00:42:41to him.
00:42:41But it's quite difficult
00:42:43to determine
00:42:44whether that Hamshou
00:42:44is really hurt
00:42:45because of his style.
00:42:47He comes in
00:42:47normally off balance.
00:42:50Very difficult.
00:42:54Hamshou showing himself
00:42:56as a more than
00:42:58qualified contender here.
00:43:01Slashing right hand
00:43:02again by Hagler
00:43:02to the chest
00:43:03and a right hand
00:43:04right on the button
00:43:04of Hamshou
00:43:05but Hamshou
00:43:05doesn't take
00:43:06a backward step.
00:43:08He's back with
00:43:09a combination of his own
00:43:10and a left hand
00:43:11to the chin
00:43:11once more by Hagler.
00:43:12Right hand scores
00:43:13to the side of the face.
00:43:15Hagler is really being
00:43:16like a surgeon
00:43:17and Hamshou
00:43:17has taken it all.
00:43:19Three punches
00:43:20right on the nose.
00:43:24I'll say again
00:43:26that one punch
00:43:28won't take Hamshou
00:43:29out.
00:43:29It's going to take
00:43:29a series of punches.
00:43:32Another whistling
00:43:33left hand
00:43:34on the side
00:43:34of the head
00:43:34of Mustafa Hamshou
00:43:35and a right hand
00:43:36scores.
00:43:37And Hamshou
00:43:37maybe for the first time
00:43:38takes a backward step.
00:43:47Hagler trying
00:43:48to measure his man.
00:43:49Get him on the way
00:43:50in if he can.
00:43:52The cuts have not
00:43:53been a major problem
00:43:54for Mustafa Hamshou
00:43:56since they occurred.
00:43:58Hagler draws
00:43:59the warning
00:44:00for holding
00:44:00two right hands
00:44:01to the side
00:44:01of the face
00:44:02of Hamshou
00:44:02by Marvin Hagler.
00:44:12Hagler is sharp
00:44:13with his jab
00:44:13tonight as I've seen.
00:44:21Downstairs
00:44:21then the right hand
00:44:22upstairs
00:44:22and that one
00:44:23was the means
00:44:23of Hamshou.
00:44:24That combination
00:44:25did a lot of damage
00:44:26to Hamshou.
00:44:28He went
00:44:29two right hands
00:44:30one upstairs
00:44:30one downstairs
00:44:31and then came back
00:44:32with a one
00:44:32to the face.
00:44:34That guy's durable
00:44:35at Hamshou
00:44:35one punch won't do it
00:44:36you have to put them
00:44:37together.
00:44:40You've got to
00:44:40stun him first
00:44:41and then you take
00:44:42control.
00:44:42Hamshou
00:44:48Hamshou
00:44:48keeps scoring
00:44:48and scores
00:44:49from the left
00:44:49hand
00:44:50to the head
00:44:50of Marvin Hagler.
00:44:53Hamshou's fighting
00:44:54like he's not worried
00:44:55about his eyes
00:44:56right now.
00:44:57Well he's not.
00:44:58I think all he's got to do
00:44:59is win.
00:45:00Combination by Hamshou
00:45:01on the side of the head
00:45:02of Marvin Hagler.
00:45:03Hagler backs up
00:45:04hits him
00:45:05with the right hand
00:45:05of his arms
00:45:06end of round seven.
00:45:11This fight is being
00:45:12fought at a
00:45:13really brutal pace.
00:45:17No ladies trying
00:45:18to stop it.
00:45:20You're not doing
00:45:21that good.
00:45:21Put them in
00:45:22longs of your eyes
00:45:23with that good.
00:45:26Give me a toe
00:45:27get the toe
00:45:28close
00:45:29close
00:45:30keep it close.
00:45:30You hurt him there
00:45:31with one left hand
00:45:32but you never follow up
00:45:34in the belly
00:45:34you're not
00:45:35you're not the same
00:45:36what the hell
00:45:37is the matter
00:45:37what's the matter?
00:45:40What's the matter?
00:45:40Gotta be something
00:45:41you're waiting on here
00:45:42what are you waiting on here?
00:45:43Don't look there
00:45:44look at me
00:45:45if you want me
00:45:46stop I go and stop
00:45:47you want me to stop
00:45:48or the god damn
00:45:49it go away
00:45:49well then go ahead
00:45:51you want to
00:45:52then show me
00:45:54show her
00:45:55yell a dog
00:45:56yell a dog
00:45:57he's out here.
00:45:59Al Braverman
00:46:00pulling out
00:46:01all the emotional stops
00:46:02and he rightly should
00:46:05I don't think
00:46:06you could script
00:46:07that any better
00:46:07you know
00:46:08whatever happens
00:46:09Mustafa Hamshaw
00:46:10doesn't want to
00:46:10leave here tonight
00:46:11thinking he didn't
00:46:12give it
00:46:12everything he had
00:46:14and he is
00:46:14scored with a left
00:46:16hand right there
00:46:16lunges back at
00:46:17Hagler
00:46:18but Hagler gets
00:46:18out of there
00:46:19in a hurry
00:46:19Hagler still has
00:46:20a lot of legs
00:46:21under him
00:46:21scores with a
00:46:22combination of his
00:46:22own
00:46:23that stops Hamshaw
00:46:23I think Hagler
00:46:25heard Hamshaw
00:46:25for the first time
00:46:26in the fight
00:46:26in that last round
00:46:27we're in round nine
00:46:28a little bit of
00:46:36blood again
00:46:37shows over the
00:46:38right eye
00:46:38of Marvin Hagler
00:46:39earlier than it
00:46:40has in previous
00:46:41rounds
00:46:42to the body
00:46:45and then to the
00:46:45head by Hamshaw
00:46:46Hagler peppering
00:46:51him with the
00:46:51right hand once
00:46:51again
00:46:52very effective
00:46:53jab
00:46:53can't talk enough
00:46:54about it
00:46:54and another left
00:46:55hand to the side
00:46:56of the head
00:46:56of Hamshaw
00:46:57marvelous
00:47:04shooting
00:47:04his plan
00:47:05his talent
00:47:06his ability
00:47:06to out maneuver
00:47:08an opponent
00:47:08to all of a sudden
00:47:09change up
00:47:10from being a slugger
00:47:11to a boxer
00:47:12counter puncher
00:47:13I'm very impressed
00:47:15with Hagler
00:47:15there's a lot
00:47:18of good foot speed
00:47:19he really can move
00:47:19he's been up on
00:47:20his toes
00:47:20he's fought
00:47:21flat footed
00:47:21he's changed
00:47:22styles
00:47:22he's changed
00:47:23hands
00:47:23there's a right
00:47:25hand by Hamshaw
00:47:26that raises
00:47:27the chin
00:47:27he takes one
00:47:28back on the chin
00:47:28to the right
00:47:29hand by Hagler
00:47:30you notice what
00:47:31the combination
00:47:31the damage
00:47:32that the combination
00:47:33does to Hamshaw
00:47:34when Marvin releases
00:47:36two or three punch combinations
00:47:38once again
00:47:39more combinations
00:47:40of punches
00:47:41from Marvin Hagler
00:47:42the way I see it now
00:47:51if Marvin just go ahead
00:47:52in there
00:47:53and put his punches
00:47:53together
00:47:54he can end this fight
00:47:55Hagler scoring
00:47:57almost at will
00:47:58but it's not really
00:48:02but perhaps
00:48:03for that one
00:48:04flurry of right hands
00:48:06in the last round
00:48:06has not really hurt
00:48:07Mustafa Hamshaw
00:48:08who has not
00:48:09but one time
00:48:09taken a backward step
00:48:11and Marvin Ham
00:48:20or rather
00:48:20Mustafa Hamshaw
00:48:21is a critic
00:48:23to coagulation
00:48:24I'll tell you that
00:48:24well you can't let a guy
00:48:25like Hamshaw
00:48:26gain confidence
00:48:27gain momentum
00:48:27he gets tougher
00:48:28Hagler hurts him
00:48:29from time to time
00:48:30but I don't think
00:48:32he feels
00:48:32it's the right time
00:48:33to take advantage of it
00:48:35more blood actually
00:48:39showing in the face
00:48:39of Marvin Hagler
00:48:40than there is
00:48:41on the face
00:48:41of Mustafa Hamshaw
00:48:42now
00:48:42and it looked
00:48:43just five rounds ago
00:48:45like the thing
00:48:45was going to be
00:48:46stopped right there
00:48:47Hamshaw with a jab
00:48:51right up on the cut
00:48:52over the right eye
00:48:53of Marvin Hagler
00:48:54Hagler beginning to score
00:49:00over the left hand
00:49:01a little bit
00:49:01and a combination
00:49:04once again
00:49:04by Marvin Hagler
00:49:05and Hamshaw's back
00:49:06in his own corner
00:49:07as the ninth round
00:49:07comes to an end
00:49:08Marvin Hagler
00:49:12knows what it's like
00:49:13to play tennis
00:49:14against the wall
00:49:14the way his shots
00:49:16are bouncing off
00:49:17Mustafa Hamshaw
00:49:19you know there are
00:49:26fighters who have
00:49:27the talent of
00:49:28Marvin Hagler
00:49:29or close to
00:49:30Marvin Hagler
00:49:30who might have
00:49:32difficulty here
00:49:33because they wouldn't
00:49:33be in as great shape
00:49:35as he is
00:49:35hard to believe
00:49:37but they are calling
00:49:38this fight
00:49:38not the main event
00:49:39we still have
00:49:40the main event
00:49:41yet to go here
00:49:42at the Horizon
00:49:42in Rosemont
00:49:43and that of course
00:49:43the heavyweight championship
00:49:44WBA champion
00:49:45Mike Weaver
00:49:46against James Quick Tillis
00:49:47who unquestionably
00:49:48is a hometown favorite
00:49:49here
00:49:49he is ranked number
00:49:50two by the WBA
00:49:51and there's a look
00:49:52into Quick Tillis' locker
00:49:53and he looks all business
00:49:54he's a big guy
00:49:55meanwhile we await
00:49:59the start of round 10
00:50:00and I gotta admit
00:50:01Larry I never thought
00:50:02we'd see round 10
00:50:03I imagine
00:50:06you'd get Hagler
00:50:07and Hamshaw
00:50:14opens up
00:50:14a little offense
00:50:15a little more blood
00:50:30showing now
00:50:31on the face
00:50:32of Mustafa Hamshaw
00:50:33early on
00:50:34in the 10th round
00:50:34here
00:50:35and likewise
00:50:38on the face
00:50:39of Marvin Hagler
00:50:40as Hamshaw
00:50:40continues to pepper him
00:50:42and there's a right hand
00:50:46sends Hamshaw
00:50:47back a couple of steps
00:50:48didn't really seem
00:50:49to hurt him
00:50:49too much however
00:50:50left hand scores
00:50:54and I think
00:50:55you probably heard
00:50:55the sound of that
00:50:56as clearly as I did here
00:50:57caught that
00:51:00on the shoulder
00:51:01right hand scores
00:51:10and now
00:51:10Hagler looks as though
00:51:11he might be caught up
00:51:12near the bridge of the nose
00:51:13on the inside
00:51:14of the right eye
00:51:15but both men
00:51:17are still throwing
00:51:18a lot of punches
00:51:19a lot of solid shots
00:51:20so there's a great deal
00:51:22of damage being done
00:51:23looping left hand
00:51:28scores by Hamshaw
00:51:29on the right hand
00:51:30and there's some blood
00:51:31on the face
00:51:31of Marvin Hagler
00:51:32halfway through
00:51:34round 10
00:51:35right hand
00:51:40uppercut
00:51:41just stood the head
00:51:42of Mustafa Hamshaw
00:51:44snapped it right back
00:51:45and a combination
00:51:46again
00:51:46another right hand
00:51:47and a crowd
00:51:47comes alive
00:51:48and another right hand
00:51:49in the face of Hamshaw
00:51:50Hamshaw continues
00:51:51to bore in
00:51:52on the champion
00:51:52Marvin Hagler
00:51:53who scores once more
00:51:54with a right hand
00:51:55and a left cross
00:51:56and Hamshaw still
00:52:01does not appear
00:52:02to be hurt
00:52:02he's taken an awful
00:52:03lot of punishment
00:52:04from the champion
00:52:04left hand by Hamshaw
00:52:15right up on the cut
00:52:16of Marvin Hagler
00:52:17wild right hand
00:52:18and now a right hand
00:52:19to the body of Hamshaw
00:52:20Hamshaw
00:52:20has his bandit
00:52:21against the ropes
00:52:22Hagler pounds on it
00:52:23and Hamshaw scores
00:52:26once again
00:52:27to the face
00:52:27of Marvin Hagler
00:52:28Hagler is cut both
00:52:30on the inside
00:52:31and the outside
00:52:32of the right eye
00:52:33and at this point
00:52:40now you have to say
00:52:41what is keeping
00:52:42Hamshaw up
00:52:43he has absorbed
00:52:45an awful lot of punishment
00:52:46two right hands
00:52:47right to the nose
00:52:48and this backs him up
00:52:49two sharp jabs
00:52:51by Marvin Hagler
00:52:51and a right hand
00:52:52a little bit short
00:52:53by Hagler
00:52:54who is now
00:52:54stalking Hamshaw
00:52:55left hand to the ribs
00:52:57and a right to the face
00:52:57Hamshaw back
00:52:58against the ropes
00:52:59and now the steam
00:53:00seems to have gone
00:53:01from the stop
00:53:02by Hamshaw
00:53:02not so from the champion
00:53:04Marvin Hagler
00:53:05and the round 10
00:53:06Mustafa Hamshaw
00:53:13and I think you saw
00:53:14that graphic right there
00:53:15Larry I harken back
00:53:16to what you were talking
00:53:17about the Tony Zale
00:53:18Carmen Basilio match
00:53:19this is like
00:53:20deja vu
00:53:21Basilio Robinson
00:53:21we'll take a look
00:53:24at Hagler here
00:53:25if you didn't know better
00:53:26you would think that
00:53:27Hamshaw is trying
00:53:28to break Hagler's hands
00:53:29with his jaw
00:53:30clean
00:53:37a clean right hand
00:53:39Hamshaw is back
00:53:40for more
00:53:41takes another right hand
00:53:43Hagler has never been
00:53:49a great
00:53:50one punch
00:53:51knockout fighter
00:53:53but this accumulation
00:53:55of punches
00:53:56could be doing
00:53:56a lot more damage
00:53:57to Hamshaw
00:53:58than any one
00:53:59paralyzing punch
00:54:01this is the last round
00:54:02he's talking
00:54:02he ain't got
00:54:03that sucker
00:54:04don't look bad
00:54:05you heard it
00:54:09he says that
00:54:10this is the last round
00:54:11he's given him
00:54:12if he doesn't look
00:54:13any better here
00:54:14the corner will
00:54:15stop the fight
00:54:16let's see if he was
00:54:18conning him
00:54:18or telling him the truth
00:54:19well he did go over
00:54:20did Al Braverman
00:54:21and talked to Octavio Maran
00:54:23and as a result of that
00:54:24he didn't get to work
00:54:25on the cuts
00:54:26of Mustafa Hamshaw
00:54:28and the right eye
00:54:29was bleeding
00:54:29in the corner
00:54:30just as much
00:54:31as it was
00:54:31during the round
00:54:32very strange
00:54:33goings on here
00:54:34Hagler goes to work
00:54:36on him
00:54:36and Hamshaw is fighting
00:54:37like it is for real
00:54:38and this is the last
00:54:39round of the fight
00:54:40let's see
00:54:41right hand again
00:54:46and another right hand
00:54:47and Hamshaw's legs
00:54:48go again
00:54:49Hagler continues
00:54:52to pound away
00:54:53to the body
00:54:53now do they have
00:54:54with the right hand
00:54:54Hamshaw tries to
00:54:55fight his way
00:54:56off the ropes
00:54:56Hamshaw content
00:54:57to stay against
00:54:58the ropes now
00:54:59uppercut
00:55:04scores by Marvin
00:55:05Hagler
00:55:05with another right
00:55:06hand to the face
00:55:07and the eyes
00:55:07continue to bleed
00:55:08and Mustafa Hamshaw
00:55:09Hagler combination
00:55:10scoring it well
00:55:11crowd is alive
00:55:12right hand to the face
00:55:13once more
00:55:13of Hamshaw
00:55:14Hamshaw obviously
00:55:16taking his corner
00:55:16seriously
00:55:17this is the last round
00:55:18and it looks very much
00:55:19right now
00:55:20as though it will be
00:55:21well Hamshaw has
00:55:22sustained more cuts
00:55:23on the lower part
00:55:25of his eye
00:55:25and I don't see no way
00:55:27this fight can continue
00:55:28this time I think
00:55:30everybody is in agreement
00:55:32that the fight
00:55:32cannot go on much longer
00:55:34Octavio
00:55:34coming out taking a very
00:55:35close look now
00:55:36at Mustafa Hamshaw
00:55:38Hamshaw cut along
00:55:39the bridge of the nose
00:55:39on the eye
00:55:40inside the mouth
00:55:41both eyes
00:55:41trying to do what he can
00:55:49to keep the attack
00:55:49of Marvin Hagler
00:55:50off of him
00:55:51but there is very little
00:55:52he can do right now
00:55:53just trying to measure
00:55:55keep him away
00:55:56Hagler scores
00:55:56with the right hand
00:55:57even so
00:55:58and another right hand
00:55:59and yet another
00:55:59combinations of punches
00:56:01by the champion
00:56:02tries to go downstairs
00:56:03comes up
00:56:03a right hand
00:56:04snaps his head back
00:56:05Hamshaw is against the
00:56:06Wolves
00:56:06takes another right hand
00:56:07and an uppercut
00:56:08Hamshaw's corner is up
00:56:10and they are saying
00:56:11that's it
00:56:11that's all
00:56:12Braverman is saying
00:56:13stop it
00:56:13the referee does so
00:56:15the fight is over
00:56:16and Marvin Hagler
00:56:17has retained
00:56:17his undisputed
00:56:18middleweight championship
00:56:19for the world
00:56:20what can you say
00:56:21you can't say anything
00:56:22but this guy is
00:56:22truly Hagler
00:56:24the greatest middleweight
00:56:25in the world
00:56:25without a question
00:56:27and he really got
00:56:30all he wanted
00:56:31from Mustafa Hamshaw
00:56:32tonight
00:56:32he hit him
00:56:33I don't know
00:56:33how many punches
00:56:34two three hundred
00:56:35punches maybe
00:56:35it may be
00:56:37it's double than that
00:56:38I think that Hagler
00:56:39displayed all the
00:56:40talents that he has
00:56:41and I take my head
00:56:42off to the guy
00:56:43outstanding effort
00:56:45by the champion
00:56:45Marvin Hagler
00:56:46second fight in a row
00:56:48of course
00:56:48that he was butted
00:56:49and again
00:56:55you have to look
00:56:56at the challenger
00:56:56Mustafa Hamshaw
00:56:57and say
00:56:57here's a guy
00:56:58who really did a job
00:56:59his corner did a
00:56:59pretty good job too
00:57:00because from the time
00:57:01he got cut
00:57:01which I believe
00:57:02was in the third round
00:57:03from that point on
00:57:04the bleeding
00:57:05until this last round
00:57:06really was at the point
00:57:07where I would doubt
00:57:08that it was even
00:57:08bothersome to him
00:57:09take another look
00:57:13at the finish of the fight
00:57:14Ray talk us through this
00:57:15well at this point now
00:57:17Hagler's in complete control
00:57:18and he displays
00:57:20so much talent here
00:57:22as we see Hamshaw
00:57:23trying to line up
00:57:25Hagler with the punch
00:57:26Hagler scores a straight
00:57:27left right hook
00:57:29I think one of the most
00:57:32remarkable things
00:57:33and I think this is a sign
00:57:34of any great champion
00:57:35Sugar Ray Leonard
00:57:36Marvin Hagler
00:57:37that when you have
00:57:38the man in trouble
00:57:39you don't waste punches
00:57:40and Marvin Hagler
00:57:41did not waste a punch
00:57:42tonight
00:57:42well Hagler took advantage
00:57:43of the opportunity
00:57:44he and his man hurt
00:57:45and he took care of business
00:57:47so Marvin Hagler
00:57:49retaining the middleweight
00:57:50championship of the world
00:57:51doing so in most
00:57:52impressive fashion
00:57:53and you get one more
00:57:55look here at the end
00:57:57for Mustafa Hamshaw
00:57:58and you can't use
00:58:00the phrase enough
00:58:00he was dead game
00:58:02but there was nothing
00:58:02he could do
00:58:03he was just in
00:58:03with the best middleweight
00:58:04around right now
00:58:05and maybe ever
00:58:07and there's a handshake
00:58:09by Marvin Hagler
00:58:10and Sugar Ray Leonard
00:58:11right here
00:58:11and here's the official
00:58:12decision
00:58:139 seconds
00:58:1511th round
00:58:16the winner
00:58:18by technical knockout
00:58:20and still
00:58:21the world's middleweight champion
00:58:24Marvin Hagler
00:58:26well a crowd appreciative
00:58:33of a very worthy champion
00:58:35and right now
00:58:36Larry Merchant
00:58:36is with that worthy champion
00:58:38Marvin Hagler
00:58:38Larry
00:58:39Marvin
00:58:40how did your hands
00:58:41stand all of that
00:58:43hitting on him
00:58:44as much as you did
00:58:45well I needed to work
00:58:46if I'm getting ready
00:58:47for the Sugar Man
00:58:47sometime
00:58:48so they can't predict
00:58:49that I can't go 15
00:58:50I felt in tremendous shape
00:58:52was that why
00:58:53was that why
00:58:54you weighed 157 pounds
00:58:55that's right
00:58:56I knew that he was
00:58:56going to keep the pressure on
00:58:57and it had to work
00:58:58real high
00:58:59and it paid off for me
00:59:00you see the hand speed
00:59:01started to come out
00:59:02let's take a look
00:59:03at some of the action
00:59:04here right here
00:59:05and describe it for us
00:59:06Marvin Hagler
00:59:07well right there
00:59:09I started using
00:59:10the body shots
00:59:11a little more
00:59:11I started putting
00:59:11the combinations
00:59:12a little bit more
00:59:13together
00:59:14I was only using
00:59:14one punch at a time
00:59:15Brian being a southpaw
00:59:17you're able to get hit
00:59:18with more shots
00:59:19from the blind side
00:59:20that's what he was
00:59:21using against Menta
00:59:22was my punch
00:59:24that I used against Menta
00:59:25but I just tried
00:59:26to protect that eye
00:59:27which I got a headbutt
00:59:28just in the first round
00:59:29or something like that
00:59:30but I'm not complaining
00:59:31I wanted to show the world
00:59:33that I deserve to be
00:59:34the champion of the world
00:59:35and I'm hoping for the
00:59:36big fight of the century
00:59:37and that's with the Sugar Man
00:59:38when you sustained the cut
00:59:41on your eye
00:59:43what was the thought
00:59:44that ran through your mind
00:59:45well I wasn't going
00:59:46to let it bother me
00:59:46I know I had a good
00:59:47cut man in there
00:59:48I knew he was doing
00:59:49his job
00:59:49I got to do my job
00:59:50in here
00:59:51everybody has their job
00:59:53we're good team
00:59:53almost immediately
00:59:54however you went
00:59:55and cut his eye
00:59:56I had to
00:59:57so the way they look
00:59:59enamorous there
01:00:00we're even now
01:00:01I said
01:00:01but you did it
01:00:03with punches
01:00:04that's right
01:00:04it was sharp
01:00:05but I should have
01:00:06put them together
01:00:06a little bit more quicker
01:00:07in the earlier rounds
01:00:09I should have
01:00:09knocked him out earlier
01:00:10were you surprised
01:00:11that the cuts
01:00:12didn't bother him
01:00:13in the middle rounds
01:00:14he's been cut
01:00:15so many times
01:00:15you know
01:00:16and I could see
01:00:17that my cuts
01:00:18was a lot deeper
01:00:18when I seen the cut
01:00:19on the middle
01:00:20of his face right here
01:00:21then I just started
01:00:22knowing that he was
01:00:23getting tired
01:00:23and I started
01:00:24using a body attack
01:00:25Marvin
01:00:26although Sugar Ray
01:00:28has said in the past
01:00:29that he'd like to fight you
01:00:29most recently
01:00:30he said
01:00:31well maybe he's
01:00:32a little too big for me
01:00:33who are the other
01:00:33middleweights
01:00:34that you might fight
01:00:35well I leave that
01:00:36all up to my manager
01:00:37but we told you
01:00:38we're going to be
01:00:38a fighting champion
01:00:39and this is what
01:00:40I want to be
01:00:40I'm staying active
01:00:41until I get a shot
01:00:42at Leonard
01:00:43if he decides
01:00:43on moving up
01:00:44but I'm not going
01:00:45to wait for him
01:00:45I'm going to stay busy
01:00:46looks like
01:00:47if he doesn't move up
01:00:48with your weight tonight
01:00:49you might move down
01:00:50I'm a legit middleweight
01:00:52for this type of style
01:00:54which I told Dr. Pacheco
01:00:55you have to be
01:00:56in tremendous shape
01:00:57because he's a brawler
01:00:58he comes at you
01:00:59all the time
01:00:59you've got to be
01:01:00in tremendous shape
01:01:01I had my legs
01:01:01in a tremendous shape
01:01:02my body
01:01:03and the main important
01:01:04thing was my mind
01:01:05thank you very much
01:01:06Marvin Hagler
01:01:06now back to Ray and Barry

01:01:15your impressions
01:01:16I know you were
01:01:16really impressed
01:01:17with the man
01:01:17and you were telling me
01:01:19that you would like
01:01:19to have Marvin Hagler
01:01:20but you don't want him
01:01:21at 160 pounds
01:01:22and sure enough
01:01:23he came in at 157
01:01:24for this fight
01:01:25well that proves
01:01:26Marvin can make
01:01:27154
01:01:28because I can't fight
01:01:29him at 160
01:01:29because I don't carry
01:01:30168
01:01:31I barely carry 147
01:01:33but Marvin
01:01:34he displays so much talent
01:01:35he's proved
01:01:36that he's number one
01:01:37I proved I'm number one
01:01:38so what
01:01:39who else can

01:01:45you were saying also
01:01:46you're not too anxious
01:01:46to get a piece
01:01:47of Thomas Hearns
01:01:48once again
01:01:48what about letting
01:01:49Hearns fight Hagler
01:01:50before you get to him
01:01:51and you take the winner
01:01:52no I think Hearns
01:01:53and Durant
01:01:54and Benitez
01:01:55and Pelluli
01:01:55they must fight each other
01:01:56and they fight the winner
01:01:57of Hagler and myself
01:01:59it would be a heck

01:02:10who really
01:02:11has not had
01:02:12the big payday
01:02:13and I think

01:02:18that he's an active champion
01:02:20he's knocked out
01:02:21everybody
