Undefeated contender Rob Brant takes on Decarlo Perez in a Middleweight bout on Shobox The New Generation
Transcript
00:0010 of the evening from here at Casino del Sol in Tucson, Arizona.
00:0310 rounds of boxing in the middleweight division between undefeated Rob Grant and DiCarlo Perez.
00:15DiCarlo Perez has been on something of a roll of late.
00:18He's won four fights in a row since his last loss, and that one, a controversial eight-round split decision back in January of 2014.
00:26He's 15-3-1 overall.
00:29The three losses on Perez's record, largely the result of his being a slow starter and giving away early rounds.
00:36We saw him in his last fight back in August when he came in on a week's notice
00:40and was the decided underdog against previously beaten two-time Dominican Olympian Juan Cabrera.
00:47Perez was outboxed in the first few rounds, but he outworked Cabrera on the inside through the last two-thirds of the fight
00:52and earned a convincing victory in his first 10-round fight.
00:57Tonight, Perez, who just has five KOs and 19 fights, will try to be on the gas early to try to outwork his opponent.
01:05Steve, take it behind the numbers.
01:07Will do, Barry.
01:07For DiCarlo Perez, no cupcakes.
01:10Perez is younger than Brandt, but he's faced much better opposition.
01:12Okay, no world beaters in his nine most recent bouts, but all reasonably tough opponents.
01:18No pop.
01:18Good fighter, below average power.
01:21Perez has one KO in the last three years, and now he's moved up to middleweight.
01:26And no doubts.
01:27Perez suffered a couple of disappointing losses early in his career, but he just scored the biggest win of his career.
01:32So confidence should be at a high.
01:3425-year-old Rob Brandt brought a solid amateur record into the pro ranks.
01:43He was 0-3 in the World Series of Boxing, though, and is 18-0 in his professional career.
01:48The rising prospect, predominantly a boxer, whose jab is his most important weapon.
01:55Brandt stepped up the competition in his last fight.
01:58That was right here on Showbox when he took on Louis Rose, a veteran who had made a reputation of beating a handful of undefeated prospects.
02:08Brandt started strong, but at the midway point, Rose began moving Brandt backward.
02:12The fight was on the line in the 10th round, and Brandt dug deep enough to hold off Rose, earn the decision, and navigate the 10-round distance for the first time in his career.
02:25That was a valuable experience for a young and very promising prospect.
02:30So, Steve, once more, let's go behind the numbers with Rob Brandt.
02:34Well, for Brandt to bury lots of wrecks, one advantage of facing subpar opposition, you can fight a lot.
02:40Brandt took five bouts last year.
02:42Perez fought only twice.
02:44Man, this is.
02:45Brandt made a big jump in beating Rose.
02:47He went the full 10 rounds.
02:49You can't say you're a 10-round fighter until you're a 10-round fighter, and punch her or not.
02:54Brandt's KO percentage is okay, 11 for 18.
02:56But I don't consider him a real puncher.
02:58The problem, he has to improve his left hook, Barry.
03:01All right, for the introduction of the fighters, then, in our main event, and we hope it will be a good one.
03:05We think it will.
03:06We take you back to the center of the ring.
03:07Here, what's more, is our ring announcer tonight, Jeff Houston.

05:39His professional record inside the ring is perfect.

05:48Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota,
05:50now residing in Dallas, Texas,
05:53please welcome the undefeated,
05:56Rob,
05:57Bravo,
05:58Bravo,
06:00Brand!
06:03Once again,
06:04our referee in charge of the action,
06:06to give the instructions,
06:07Rocky Burke.
06:11Gentlemen,
06:11keep your guard up at all times,
06:13when I say break,
06:13take a step back without punch,
06:15and in case I knock down,
06:16go to the furthest neutral corner,
06:17don't come out of the neutral corner,
06:19until I say box.
06:20Give me a good clean fight,
06:21good luck to both of you,
06:22shake hands.
06:23How's that stare out for intensity?
06:27We look at the numbers,
06:28the prevailing wisdom is that Brandt,
06:30who's the boxer,
06:31needs to keep the fight on the outside.
06:33But the short of Perez,
06:34you see,
06:34actually has a slightly longer reach.
06:37Interesting.
06:39Rules,
06:39same as our first two fights,
06:40no standing eight,
06:41no three knockdowns,
06:42only the ref would stop the fight.
06:44You can't be saved by the belt in any round,
06:45and the accidental foul rule,
06:46if the fight ends before the end of round four,
06:48it's a no decision.
06:49After that,
06:49we go to the cards,
06:50Barry.
06:51All right,
06:51thank you,
06:51and it wasn't a tense stare down,
06:53which I find interesting,
06:54because these are two of the nicest guys
06:56that you'll ever meet in boxing.
06:58Yeah,
06:58they are.
06:59And Perez is right out of the box.
07:01It's exactly what he said he was going to do.
07:04He said he has to lead the dance.
07:08Yep,
07:09he said he's going to bring fireworks
07:10the first three rounds,
07:12and he started off good in the first round.
07:14Nice left hand,
07:15top of the head,
07:15another left hand by Perez.
07:18Small ring definitely favors Perez.
07:23Grant will try to work the jab.
07:24Very good boxer.
07:25These guys are both pretty good boxers.
07:30This is a very tough fight to handicap.
07:33Good jab by Grant.
07:35Snap the head of Perez back.
07:42Nice combination now.
07:44Perez has to get out of there,
07:45and Grant will try to come up again.
07:48Grant,
07:49serious business here in this first round
07:51after Perez started early.
07:53Perez has to stay off the ropes.
07:55He's got to get out of there.
07:56A little pass there.
07:57Has to stay off the ropes.
08:00And a good right hand again.
08:01Perez right back against the ropes.
08:03No, but I think Rob Grant is determined to make a very, very quick impression in this fight.
08:16And he's done,
08:17yes,
08:18he's done just that.
08:18He did say he wasn't very happy with his last performance.
08:23He said,
08:24majority of decisions are going to do it for me.
08:26I got to win and look impressive a lot more impressive.
08:29I know both these guys early in this fight are exercising their game plan perfectly.
08:33Now, if you're experienced,
08:35Brandt,
08:35a former national champion at 178 pounds in 2009.
08:40Perez never got to the national level.
08:43In the pro experience,
08:43you see,
08:44they turned pro almost at the same time,
08:46they fought almost the same number of fights.
08:48very effective first round for Brandt after the very quick start.
08:58Brandt being very sharp.
09:01Perez not the easiest guy to hit.
09:02Another good left hand for Brandt.
09:09Well,
09:09this first round certainly not going the way we thought it would.
09:12Not at all.
09:12Brandt,
09:13that's more impressive.
09:14Yeah,
09:15naturally the bigger guy.
09:16He's using his strength.
09:17Brought that right hand quickly behind him.
09:19Very effective jab.
09:21And again,
09:22Perez against the loss.
09:25Brandt is doing what Perez said he was going to do.
09:28Well, Perez did it for about the first 15 seconds.
09:34With these guys playing bombs away,
09:36it's worth noting,
09:37both of them have been down only once in their career.
09:38No, no, no, no.
09:40Don't let him rock in the jungle.
09:42Beautiful ball.
09:43Come on, man.
09:44Get him out.
09:46That jab of Brandt is really a good one so far.
09:50Yeah, he's got a very effective jab.
09:52Another nice combination.
09:53That rock for rest.
09:54Left hook, man.
09:55Yes.
09:56It became behind him.
09:57The third punch of a three-punch combination.
10:00Big round for Brandt.
10:01My biggest edge in this fight is going to be able to control the distance in the range with a jab.
10:15A nice stiff shot to kind of keep him off balance.
10:17He's a guy that, you know, you can rattle his cage.
10:19You know, he's not a guy who's hard to hurt.
10:22But, you know, he's obviously a hard guy to keep down.
10:25But, you know, you're just going to continue to rattle his cage and discourage him a little bit.
10:28Don't just go out there and when you get him hurt to throw a 20-punch combination, pick the punches.
10:34Well, from what I know is going backwards is an issue.
10:37Pressure is an issue.
10:38And punching in combinations at the same time is one of his biggest problems.
10:43He punches taking turns.
10:44So, I do know that coming forward aggressively, smart aggression is going to be a big key factor in this fight
10:51and making sure that the tempo is set at my pace.
10:56Well, so far, I'd say, of the two, Brandt is exercising his game plan a little bit better through the first three minutes of this fight.
11:05Well, at the fighter meetings, Perez told us he wants to throw 75 to 100 punches a round.
11:10In round one, he fell short of that mark, but Rob Brandt threw 97 punches.
11:14Wow, very busy pace by Brandt.
11:17That's it.
11:18And Brandt's punches were snapping kinds of punches, too.
11:22Yes, he hurt them.
11:23But, you know, Perez, if you saw him in his last fight with Cabrera,
11:27and even the fight before that, Niklo Brunson, they hurt him early in the fight,
11:31but they just didn't know how to get him out there.
11:33He survived, and he came back strong.
11:36And he keeps pressing, and he won by decision with the guys.
11:41The one thing about both these guys, I think they're both in impeccable shape.
11:44I don't think that's going to be any kind of an issue.
11:49Three-punch combination for Perez.
11:53Two-punch combination in return by Brandt.
11:59Perez, two punches.
12:00Three-punches.
12:04Dumping to look for Cabrera.
12:06Excuse me, Perez.
12:07Right hand, sorry, Steve.
12:09That'd be hurt.
12:11Perez's left hook very wide.
12:13Brandt's best punch is right hand.
12:15Brandt can counter that left hook.
12:18And Brandt staying more in the pocket instead of just using his jab a lot from the outside
12:23and moving away and throwing combinations.
12:26You see he blocks, he makes a miss, and then he cuts right back.
12:30That's something that Derrick James has been working on.
12:34Kind of like Errol Spence does, you know.
12:36He said he wanted him to stay more in the pocket and not run away from the person where he does damage.
12:41And that's exactly what he's doing.
12:43Yeah, Brandt has been working in Texas, as you pointed out.
12:46He comes from Minnesota.
12:47There you go!
12:48There you go!
12:49You know what I really like about him, Steve?
12:54He really sets down and his punch is nice.
12:55He's really balanced.
12:58Yeah, that amateur experience shows in that regard.
13:00He's looking like a much bigger puncher than I remember Brandt being.
13:04Yes.
13:04So far tonight, it's almost like he's decided this ring is too small.
13:08He's a fighter who uses his legs a lot, especially for defense.
13:11It's almost as if he decided this ring is too small to fight that way.
13:14And very few single punches.
13:16Almost everything is coming in combination.
13:19Can he maintain it?
13:20He's been with a tough guy.
13:21That's what happened in his last fight with Rose.
13:28You know, he faded later in the fight, lost a couple of rounds.
13:32He can't afford to do that with Perez.
13:35But Perez so far has taken his best shots.
13:37And he's going to keep coming throughout the whole fight.
13:39He's a pressure fighter.
13:42Brandt's mouth open.
13:43Is that a sign of early fatigue?
13:45Yeah, he was that way in the first round, too.
13:47Wow, listen.
14:03You're working at a high rate.
14:04I like that.
14:05But listen, you ain't got to shoot all them shots.
14:07The jab is going to keep everything.
14:09When you step in, bam, with the right hand.
14:12Breathe deep.
14:13I need a deep breath.
14:13Deep breath.
14:14Keep the jab popping.
14:15Keep him reaching.
14:17Control the distance when he reach, bam.
14:19Set him back out.
14:20All right?
14:21Keep the jab popping.
14:22But rotate in on the shot.
14:24Brandt wasn't quite as dominant in round two as he was in round one.
14:28But you can see he had some big moments of right hand.
14:31That's his punch.
14:32He gets full extension on that right hand.
14:36There you see it again.
14:37He follows with a straight left hand.
14:41Another good round for Brandt.
14:42Yeah, and I think it's true with Derrick James is telling him,
14:44Hey, you know, you don't have to throw a lot of punches.
14:46This ain't the amateurs.
14:48You know, just be more economical with your punches.
14:50Make them count.
14:52Sit down more on them and make every shot count.
14:54It's also told him everything off the jab.
14:57Fox.
15:00This is round three.
15:01Well, what Brandt needs to prove to us, in the last fight against Louis Rose,
15:08he slowed down big time in the second half of the fight.
15:11This time, the pace is so much faster.
15:14Can he maintain this for ten rounds?
15:16That's the right hand by Perez.
15:17It's true.
15:18But he did tell us.
15:19He says, you've got to go ten rounds.
15:20You can't do it in the gym.
15:21You've got to actually do it in the fight to know what it's like.
15:24And he's done it.
15:25He's hit with another big right hand.
15:27A lot of bombs when he's thrown in this fight.
15:41Especially early.
15:42Only round three.
15:45I think Perez already survived the early arms lot of Brandt.
15:51Maybe he already took his best shots.
15:54He's that kind of guy.
15:55Like, you hurt him early, and then he kind of wakes him up.
16:03It's funny.
16:04Perez was so determined not to have a slow start.
16:07And what happened?
16:08He lost first two rounds.
16:09You know that.
16:10Yeah.
16:12And drops him.
16:14Straight right hand for Brandt.
16:16Four.
16:18Five.
16:19Six.
16:20Seven.
16:21Eight.
16:23I think he's okay, but that was a very good shot from Brandt.
16:32As usual, when in trouble, Perez against the ropes.
16:38I think Perez is still hurt.
16:41Perez just staying with his back to the ropes here.
16:44I like how Brandt is taking his time.
16:55He's finding him with his jab.
16:57He's trying to land a little big shot.
16:59And that's it again.
17:02Another left hand from Brandt.
17:05You used the word before, Barry.
17:13It's very applicable right now.
17:14Brandt's balance is simply better.
17:16Yes.
17:18Perez, when he launches a lead power shot, he's not on balance.
17:22It could be from fatigue and from being hurt as well.
17:24He reaches to him.
17:27He's very wobbly.
17:28Fight, Brandt!
17:31Right, you see Brandt's fight is in the center.
17:34He throws his way in the back leg.
17:35That's where the power comes from.
17:38It was a straight right hand that dropped Perez.
17:41And now he's finding a hole for the left hand as well, Brandt.
17:43Well, Perez is in the best shape of his career.
17:48He's going to need it to weather this storm in the first half of the fight.
17:51I think the point that you made, Steve, is absolutely right.
17:54I thought of Brandt as a boxer.
17:58I really never thought of as a power guy.
17:59And he's showing that, making a liar out of us.
18:04How do you feel?
18:04Good.
18:05All right, sit down.
18:06Spread your legs.
18:07Take his arms out.
18:10Get up.
18:11Stop stressing yourself out.
18:13That's it, right?
18:14It's another day in the gym.
18:15Okay?
18:16All right?
18:17Go what?
18:18All right?
18:19He's saying they're stuck.
18:21We'll take a look at action.
18:24Straight right hand.
18:25It's his best punch, Rob Brandt.
18:26He throws it.
18:26Textbook.
18:27Again, that amateur experience.
18:31Perez's left hand was not up high enough.
18:33He didn't move his head.
18:34Ends up on the floor.
18:36And he's behind four points.
18:37Yeah, that's right.
18:38So, as he's had to do all along, they can come back here.
18:41We're at the Casino del Sol Hotel.
18:42The only place in America where it's not either raining or snowing out there.
18:46We're at Tucson, Arizona.
18:47It's actually a beautiful night.
18:48And a great night for boxing.
18:50Sellout crowd here.
18:51We're watching our feature fight of the night.
18:54Rob Brandt and DeCarlo Perez.
18:56And so far, it's been Rob Brandt, who's really been dictating the fight.
19:00And on our cards, I have to think on everybody's card, as you mentioned, Steve, a four-point lead.
19:04Go Redd, go Redd.
19:06Okay.
19:10Another good right hand.
19:12Perez continues to drop that left just a little bit.
19:15Brandt's making it pay.
19:16Raul mentioned it. I'm going to echo his thoughts.
19:23Got to give Derrick James a lot of credit.
19:25This is the best Rock Rantz look yet,
19:27and he's facing the best opponent of his career.
19:30Yeah, I see a lot of improvement.
19:31Rock Rantz is down, and that's it. It is over.
19:37A huge right hand.
19:40That might have even surprised Brandz.
19:42Just lay down. Just lay down.
19:46Wow!
19:52No questions asked. That's all he needed.
19:59Well, that was impressive.
20:02He went back really awkwardly with his back to the ropes, and his head snapped back.
20:17And they will, of course, look after Decarlo Perez, make sure that he is okay.
20:22Barry, I think if Rock Rantz's people had written out how they wanted this fight to go,
20:33could they have constructed a better script?
20:35I mean, this was absolutely perfect.
20:37Absolutely.
20:38I mean, you know, this guy, I thought, you know, this series is all about taking that next step.
20:43I think tonight, Rock Rantz took a quantum leap, not just a step.
20:53Right hand, and look at the reaction of Decarlo Perez.
20:58That was so awkward and ugly-looking.
21:00As he sort of slingshots off that third rope.
21:08You know, in the old days, there were only three ropes, not four.
21:11And the fighters would bang their heads against the floor after getting knocked down,
21:15and it was quite dangerous.
21:17Fortunately, here, you see that he didn't bang his head against the canvas,
21:20but he was out, falling very awkwardly.
21:23Yeah, I thought the referee did a very good job there,
21:28immediately asking for medical help and making sure the man stayed down.
21:32And they're still tending to Decarlo Perez, he appears to be communicating with him.
21:37But here's the final numbers, Steve.
21:38Yeah, the numbers don't even tell the story of the fight,
21:41because look at the body punching.
21:43Perez with a huge edge.
21:45And the total punches, yeah, pretty good edge for Rantz,
21:47but they threw about the same number of punches.
21:50The real difference was the power, and I never thought I'd say that.
21:53But this early, you know, in a fight of Rob Brantz,
21:57because he just, he looked like the power puncher in there.
21:59No, no question about it.
22:00And again, I particularly like the way he set up the power punches.
22:04I mean, it wasn't just one shot and goodbye.
22:06This was all combinations.
22:08Cannot say enough good things about Rob Brantz.
22:09Let's go to the center of the ring once more.
22:11The ring and I could announce your Jeff Houston.
22:13We'll make it all official.
22:14Jeff?
22:14Would you guys move to the side?
22:19Ladies and gentlemen, our referee in charge, Rocky Burke,
22:22steps in and calls a stop to this championship bout
22:25at 39 seconds, round number four.
22:27Your winner by knockout,
22:29and new WBA-NABA middleweight champion
22:35from Dallas, Texas,
22:37the undefeated Rob Bravo Brantz.
22:43Well, here it is.
22:53Another look at that final shot.
22:55It was a right hand,
22:56and you could see the impact that Perez went down with.
23:00It's been quite a night.
23:01Let's take a look back on the activities that we saw tonight.
23:04It was really interesting.
23:05Our first fight, of course,
23:07Bakhtiar Uba, well, he did get into the third round.
23:10First time he's had to do that.
23:12Well, Barry, a sensational showbox debut for Uba.
23:16Yes, there is now another big puncher from Kazakhstan.
23:20I'd describe Uba's performance in two words,
23:22power and personality.
23:24All right, and then Jarrell, big baby.
23:27Miller looked like the thing was going to be over early.
23:29Give it up for Dennis, though.
23:31He hung around maybe longer than he thought he would.
23:33Yeah, I agree, Barry,
23:34and a great start for big baby
23:36and a great finish for big baby.
23:38And in between going seven hard rounds,
23:40facing some resistance.
23:42Very invaluable.
23:44Well, the guy, of course,
23:44that put the exclamation point on this night.
23:46We've talked about him already,
23:47but believe me,
23:48we're going to be talking about him more.
23:50Young guy by the name of Rob Brandt.
23:52Well, the replay says it all.
23:54I talked before about Brandt needing to improve his left hook.
23:58I'll tell you this.
23:59There is absolutely nothing wrong with his straight right hand.
24:02Well, that'll do it for this edition of Showbox,
24:06the new generation.
24:07The executive producer of Showbox is Gordon Hall.
24:10Showbox is produced by Richard Gaughan
24:13and directed by Rick Phillips.
24:16So for my partner, Steve Farhood, Raul Marquez,
