00:00Welcome, everybody. This is Hans-Martin Schleyer Hall in Stuttgart, Germany.
00:21Tonight, an ESPN Boxing Special, the WBC heavyweight title fight
00:26between Vitaly Klitschko, the champion, and Juan Carlos Gomez.
00:31Klitschko wants the Ring Magazine heavyweight champion of the world,
00:34back from retirement, defending this particular belt for the first time.
00:39About to make his ring entrance right now, Juan Carlos Gomez, a former cruiserweight champion,
00:44getting his first shot for a title in the heavyweight division.
00:49Brian Kenney and Teddy Atlas here with you for the night on this ESPN Boxing Special.
00:53And Vitaly Klitschko, again, once the ruler of the heavyweight division,
00:57Teddy, gone for four years, came back so impressively in destroying Sam Peter a few months ago.
01:03Yes, he did. You know, you wonder, is he really that sharp?
01:07Was he really sharp, or was it a little bit of an optical illusion because Peter was so bad?
01:13So was Klitschko that good?
01:15Or Peter, who did an imitation of a heavy bag that night, did he make him look that good?
01:20Because being away that long, it is extraordinary to come back
01:24and have that kind of athletic performance.
01:28Klitschko looked marvelous in that fight in October.
01:30Again, he was the Ring Magazine heavyweight champion in 2004.
01:33Had an impressive run, knocking out Corey Sanders.
01:36Had one title defense, knocking out Danny Williams.
01:39Remember, he had that impressive fight against Lennox Lewis.
01:41Was actually getting the better of the fight, but the fight was stopped on cuts, legitimately.
01:45And Lewis won that fight.
01:47Only two losses for this man.
01:49The 6'7", 249-pound Vitaly Klitschko.
01:54He lost in his bout with Chris Bird and had that wild big man collision with Lennox Lewis.
01:59He is a tough man to deal with, Teddy, because he can box and he has shown through the years
02:03and kind of the latter stages of his career that he is a fairly rugged guy.
02:07Well, actually, when he became a rugged guy, or in my terms, the way I would say it,
02:12when he became a pro was after the Chris Bird fight.
02:15He submitted in that fight.
02:17I mean, there's no way.
02:17Torn rotator cuff.
02:18Yes, but he was way ahead in the fight and he gave in.
02:22I mean, there's been fighters.
02:23I know it sounds barbaric, but there's been fighters that have won with one arm,
02:28have finished a fight, you know, the best they can with one arm.
02:31It is fighting.
02:32It is dealing with resistance.
02:34That's the essence of the game.
02:36And he submitted in that fight, and I think he paid a price for it himself.
02:40I think it bothered him for a while, and then he overcame that in the Lennox Lewis fight.
02:45In the Lennox Lewis fight, he became a pro.
02:49He did not want that fight to end, but it was stopped.
02:52But now he is back on top.
02:53We'll step away for a moment.
02:55Back in Stuttgart in a second.
02:59Hi, Scream.
03:01How you doing?
03:02Hello.
03:02Look at my different colors.
03:04You want green?
03:05Cool.
03:07You ready?
03:07There you go.
03:08Oh, wait, wait, wait.
03:09There's no stick.
03:10The stick, so they can hold on to the stick.
03:12Do we have the sticks, or...?
03:13Um, no.
03:14Yeah, but it's...
03:14So you just touched my money, and you've touched this?
03:16Yeah, but you can eat the part that you touched.
03:21You can eat it in the shade.
03:24It won't melt as fast.
03:25Yeah, right.
03:26Thanks.
03:27Bye.
03:27Bye.
03:27Bye.

06:01Brian Kenney and Teddy Atlas back here with you.
06:04We are in Stuttgart, Germany.
06:06Vitaly Klitschko and Juan Carlos Gomez ready to get it on in a heavyweight title fight.
06:10Go to the tail of the tape.
06:11But Klitschko, as you see, looked at the problem for the opponents of Klitschko is right there.
06:166'7", 249.
06:18He's now 37 years old.
06:19Had that nearly four-year retirement.
06:22Juan Carlos Gomez, though, again, 35 years old.
06:26Again, a long career as a cruiserweight.
06:28Good amateur career.
06:29Teddy, we talked about that on Friday Night Fights last night.
06:33Gomez, 10 title defenses as a cruiserweight champion.
06:36But now moving up, weighed in at 230 pounds.
06:3910 pounds lighter than he was for his previous fight.
06:42Klitschko at 249 is 4 pounds lighter than he was for his fight where he looks so good against Sam Peter.
06:51Let's go to the ring right now.
06:52And you'll hear the familiar voice of Michael Buffer.
06:55John Kane from Japan, Nobuyaki Urutani.
06:59And inside the ring, your referee in charge of the action at the bell from Belgium, Daniel Vanderville.
07:07And now, for the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world,
07:13Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble!
07:25Fighting out of the blue corner, wearing the colors of Cuba.
07:30Official weight, 104.5 kilos.
07:34Professional record, 46 fights.
07:3744 victories, including 35 knockouts.
07:41Only one defeat, with one no contest.
07:44From Havana, Cuba.
07:46Former cruiserweight champion of the world and WBC.
07:51Number one heavyweight challenger in the world.
07:55The Black Panther, Juan Carlos Gomez.
08:01And fighting out of the red corner, wearing black.
08:09Official weight, 113 kilos.
08:12Professional record, 38 fights.
08:1536 victories, including 35 knockouts.
08:19Only two defeats.
08:20From Kiev, Ukraine.
08:22Two-time world heavyweight champion.
08:26And reigning, defending, WBC heavyweight champion of the world.
08:33Dr. Iron Fist.
08:35Vitalik Sleechko.
08:41I spoke to both of you in the dressing room.
09:01Obey my commands at all time and protect yourself at all time.
09:04Touch gloves.
09:05A calm demeanor of an experienced professional, Vitalik Klitschko.
09:14You see there, 6'7".
09:16Calm as he stood there in the top two heavyweights in the world.
09:18Side by side.
09:19Vitalik and his younger brother, Vladimir.
09:22Brian, the first thing you see when they were in the center of the ring,
09:25obviously, is the size difference.
09:27The height difference.
09:27But what you're about to see when they engage is the length difference.
09:32The wingspan.
09:33And I think that's the key for the fight for Klitschko.
09:36He wants to control range.
09:39He's been able to do that so well in his run as a heavyweight champion
09:44and then coming back and fighting.
09:46Sampita underway.
09:47And Juan Carlos Gomez looks to flurry immediately.
09:51And that's uncharacteristic for Gomez.
09:54He's a safety fighter.
09:55He's a counterpuncher.
09:56He's a guy that likes to pull with his jam.
09:58And he's always looking for that left hand.
10:01The power punch for a southpaw.
10:03The punch that he can turn his back into, pivot on that back foot,
10:08and get some weight behind him.
10:09But he likes to stay outside and take advantage of your mistakes.
10:14I don't know if he's going to be able to win that kind of fight.
10:17Again, with the longer Klitschko.
10:19He might have to take chances.
10:21And that's really not his temperament.
10:23Not Gomez's temperament.
10:25Gomez tries to get in and throw that straight right hand.
10:28He's got a good arsenal.
10:29Good, fluid movement in the ring.
10:32Several hundred fights as an amateur with the Cuban national team.
10:36Again, he came up into the heavyweight division.
10:38At the scene on U.S. National TV, fighting against Samil Sam and Teddy.
10:44At the time I watched him, I thought this is when James Toney had just gotten into the heavyweight division.
10:48I thought, all right, Juan Carlos Gomez is going to have an impact as a heavyweight.
10:53That hasn't happened, although he can make it happen tonight.
10:55Yes, he can.
10:55And the thing that I noticed right away that the two fighters are doing, in a very similar fashion,
11:02that might sound funny, because physically they're so different.
11:05So much different as far as just physical stature.
11:10They both like to paw with their lead hands, Ryan.
11:13Of course, Gomez, the lead hand for the southpaw, is the right.
11:17He paws with that.
11:18Always looking to set up the backhand, the left hand.
11:21Same thing with Klitschko.
11:23Doesn't really use that jab to control range.
11:25He paws with it.
11:26He's looking to set up that right hand.
11:28Almost looks like Gomez is doing a mirror job, though, on Klitschko.
11:31If you're going to put that out there, I'll put that out there as well.
11:33That's always been his habit, to paw with that hand, always looking for the left hand.
11:39Basically, to me, Gomez is a one-handed fighter.
11:43The only thing you have to worry about, really, is the left hand.
11:47That's the one he's going to try to win the fight with and do damage with.
11:51And right now, I think Klitschko's moving the wrong direction.
11:54He's moving to his right, into that left hand, as he did right there.
11:58He should be moving the other way, away from that left hand, to his left.
12:05Strategic mistake early.
12:08We'll see if Klitschko pays a big price for it.
12:11Already, Vintoli Klitschko is having more trouble with Juan Carlos Gomez than he had against Sam Peter.
12:16He came out and relaxed within the first 30 seconds of the fight against Peter, found his range, and really was able to drop his left hand and just snap jabs off his head.
12:25He's not able to do that right now.
12:27And one of the reasons why he's not, he's not snapping that jab.
12:32He's not using it to control range, as you just said, and set up that right hand.
12:36He's pouring with it.
12:37And by pouring with it and not throwing a full jab, he's allowing Gomez to close the gap.
12:43Gomez sticks his tongue out and smiles at Vintoli Klitschko.
12:49Klitschko, a man who again once was the heavyweight champion of the world, came back, beat Sam Peter in October of 2008.
13:00Remember, he had that run for mayor of Kiev, Ukraine, while he was away, retiring.
13:05Did retire, he had back injuries, also had knee injuries in 2004.
13:11He was trying to get back into the ring multiple times against Hasim Rahman.
13:17Go through his timeline, again, beating Corey Sanders.
13:20It was a little controversy there that Sanders was rated as highly as he was, beating Vladimir Klitschko.
13:25But again, the win for Vintoli propelled him to the Ring Magazine champion.
13:30He ran for mayor of Kiev, again, lost, by the way, but then came back so impressively.
13:36Against Sam Peter.
13:38And again, you look at the timeline, the most important thing to me is that fight with Bird.
13:44Because in that fight, I believe he submitted and he found out what it took to be a pro.
13:51That he had control of things, he didn't have to give up control of things.
13:54And in the Lennox Lewis fight, he didn't fight to win or lose that fight.
13:58You know, wound up being stopped on cuts.
14:00He fought for redemption, to feel like a pro, to feel like a man, and to be confident.
14:08And I think the confidence is what allows him to come back after such a long layoff.
14:14And have the performance he had in his last fight in getting one of the belts with Peter.
14:19And now being able to fight, who I think is a more viable opponent than Peter was, Gomez, the former cruiserweight champion.
14:27Yeah, you wouldn't have thought that going in, or you shouldn't have thought that going in if you're watching from a distance.
14:31Peter, one of the top heavyweights in the world, had had one of the belts.
14:34Juan Carlos Gomez, again, really just one loss in his career, that to Yankee Diaz, a one-round KO.
14:40But he had management issues, he had issues outside of the ring, his lifestyle's not said to be the best.
14:46But if you ever had a chance to be properly motivated, Teddy, this is it.
14:51I mean, he feels his career was mismanaged by Universum.
14:54Those are the guys who are now promoting Vitaly Klitschko.
14:57And, Teddy, he said in his last fight against Vladimir Virchis that beating a Universum fighter was more important to him than beating Virchis.
15:05So he's fighting Klitschko and his old promoters right now.
15:08And that could be a double-edged sword.
15:11It could be a dangerous thing, too, because you can get too emotional.
15:14And in that ring, you want to be cold.
15:17You don't want to get too emotional.
15:18You don't want to get angry.
15:20You don't want to get vengeful.
15:21You want to be smart and stay in your fight plan.
15:23Now Klitschko moves in, but it's quickly tied up.
15:35And again, at the end of this night, I'm going to say it very early,
15:39Gomez will have win or lose, especially if he loses,
15:42he will have nothing to complain about.
15:45He will not be able to say,
15:46I could not deal with the height, the wingspan of Klitschko,
15:50because Klitschko's given up his height.
15:51In a lot of cases, Klitschko has been engaging Gomez in close quarters.
15:57That's usually not what he does, Teddy, right?
15:59Klitschko usually uses all of that height, that wingspan.
16:02But he's not extending that jab.
16:05He is looking for the right hand, but he's pushing that jab out.
16:08And by pushing it, not getting a full jab, he's allowing that to happen.
16:12He's allowing Gomez, again, as I said early, to close that distance.
16:17The first round was very close.
16:19In this round, Klitschko has landed two sharp, jarring right hands.
16:25But when you're fighting the southpaw, that's the southpaw killer, the right hand.
16:30That's what trainers, that's what fighters like to look for.
16:33That's what Klitschko is looking for,
16:35and he's been successful with this round.
16:43Final seconds of the second round here in Stuttgart,
16:46as Vitaly Klitschko is being put to the test by Juan Carlos Gomez.
16:50Again, Brian, you saw a minute ago,
16:52Gomez not having trouble getting close,
16:55but he's not doing much when he gets there.
16:57End of round two, we'll take a closer look at Juan Carlos Gomez.
17:03Nickname is the Black Panther.
17:04He came into the ring with the cowboy hat.
17:07A lot of fighting cowboys these days.
17:09It's popular.
17:10Black Panther, again, he was a WBC cruiserweight champion,
17:13had 10 title defenses.
17:15Very impressive as a cruiserweight.
17:17Right now, he is ranked ninth in the world in the Ring Magazine ratings.
17:21Last fight, again, as I mentioned, against Vladimir Virchis.
17:26Beat him in September to get him this fight.
17:30Gomez only the one loss, but 35 years old.
17:34Cuban defector, impressive amateur career.
17:37He claims his record was 286-15.
17:41I'm not saying I don't believe it.
17:42I'm just saying that's quite an incredible record.
17:45Well, the Cuban national team are known as being the best amateurs in the world.
17:50Certainly.
17:50For the most part, and with that, the most experience.
17:53They get a lot of fights.
17:58What would you tell Vitaly Klitschko in the corner this round, Teddy, if you had him?
18:01One thing, Brian.
18:03Extend that jab.
18:04Get a full jab, not a three-quarters jab.
18:07Keep the shorter man where he belongs, away from you.
18:10Where you have the big edge.
18:12Where you can hit him, he cannot hit you.
18:15And Ivan Klitschko, not now, but more importantly,
18:19the theme throughout training camp was make Gomez earn real estate.
18:26Charge him for it.
18:27Not money, but punches.
18:30For every foot, every two feet, like that he tries to gain, charge him three punches.
18:34Gomez now lunging in.
18:42His best wins, Oliver McCall and older Oliver McCall twice in 2005 and 2007.
18:49As Klitschko flashes in a jab, misses with the right hand.
18:52He also had that win, as I mentioned, where he looked so impressive against Sanin Samil-San.
18:56Also has wins over cruiserweights, Al Paul and Imamu Mayfield.
19:01Those guys were quality cruiserweights.
19:04Look, when you're the shorter man, as the southpaw of Gomez obviously is,
19:08there's one thing that you know you have to do.
19:11You have to get into range of the longer man, the taller man, to be able to be effective.
19:16Now, there's two ways you can do that.
19:19The old conventional standard way is you work your way in.
19:22Behind your jab, you bring your feet like that, and you step in.
19:26The other way is you step out, believe it or not,
19:29and you try to entice the taller man to give up his height, to walk into tracks.
19:36It looked like Gomez was just trying to do the ladder early,
19:39trying to stay outside, get Klitschko to give up his height.
19:43But right now, he's doing it the old-fashioned way going around.
19:46He's trying to go after him.
19:50And right now, Klitschko, in this round, mark it down, third round,
19:55doing a better job of controlling range.
19:59Standing on the outside, using that jab a little bit better,
20:04still not extending it, and he's looking to pot shot with the right hand.
20:08You know, for so many years, Teddy, as you see,
20:10talk about the physical gifts of the Klitschko brothers.
20:14And Vladimir is certainly the more fluid of the two,
20:16but for both of them, I just remember so many fans in the United States
20:20not being impressed by either one.
20:22But when it comes down to it, you had to ask,
20:24yeah, but who beats them?
20:25Because they both can box, and they just have enormous sides.
20:29Well, as long as you say that statement,
20:31you have to ask who beats them,
20:33then I have to make the statement who's there.
20:35The landscape is a very forgiving landscape for heavyweights nowadays.
20:41That's true. Certainly is now.
20:44Most of the top heavyweights in the world are all 30-something,
20:48very few 20-somethings on the way up.
20:51See this? That is not what you like.
20:53Gomez is a shorter man.
20:54He's been hurt a little bit as he tries to get in,
20:57and that's what Klitschko wants to do.
20:58Two things.
20:59One, keep him at the end of his punches
21:01and catch him with the right hand,
21:03keep him at the end of his jab,
21:04and the other is to be able to let him walk in,
21:08control range, and then catch him,
21:11counter him as he walks in,
21:13as he reaches and leaves himself available.
21:16Three rounds in here in Stuttgart.
21:19I believe that's Boris Becker.
21:20The former tennis great.
21:22Tennis great, Wimbledon champion,
21:23and a leading man there in Germany still to this day.
21:27Vitaly Klitschko in his corner.
21:29Fritz Stunek is his trainer for Juan Carlos Gomez,
21:32who you see there.
21:32It's Orlando Pueyar.
21:34You know, for all the...
21:35You know, I feel, Teddy,
21:37that we're giving credit to Gomez for being in the fight,
21:40and yet he's not able to effectively do too much
21:43against Klitschko to this point.
21:44No, it's Bozzi's being effective,
21:46and you bring to mind that great saying.
21:50You want to be aggressive,
21:52but you want to be effective when you're aggressive.
21:54He's stumbling a little bit.
21:55He looks like he's groping
21:57and getting lost in space.
21:59And again, he is a guy who normally looks fluid,
22:01but it's difficult to be fluid
22:03when you have that telephone pole
22:05sticking in your face.
22:07See, there's the groping.
22:08There's the being lost in space.
22:09He's reaching in there.
22:11Now, what you don't see there in that replay,
22:13you see the misses, and that's good.
22:15But if you're Klitschko's trainer,
22:18or if I'm Klitschko's trainer,
22:19you know what I'm telling him right now?
22:20Make him pay.
22:21You did the hard part.
22:22But if you made him miss, you got him into space,
22:24now enact a toll on him.
22:28Make him pay when he gets in space
22:30and when he gropes a little bit.
22:32Fourth round here in Stuttgart, Germany.
22:35Hans Martin Schleyer-Hall,
22:36Brian Kenney, Teddy Atlas here
22:38in ESPN Boxing Special.
22:40There was some controversy yesterday
22:42in Stuttgart as they measured the ring
22:45and the Gomez camp found it to be
22:47four feet too small.
22:50Four feet!
22:52I mean, is that a mistake?
22:54Or is that a...
22:55Is that we're going to fight in a phone booth?
22:57And look, here's the phone booth.
22:58I think that's the local promoter
23:00who controls Klitschko
23:04and controls the fight.
23:05It's a whole fight for them, yeah.
23:06Trying to get an advantage
23:07and that's boxing.
23:10You wouldn't see that shenanigans
23:11in any other sport.
23:12It wouldn't be allowed.
23:13Strong right hand there from Klitschko
23:15as he drove Gomez back
23:16and Teddy Atlas gave the first round
23:18to Juan Carlos Gomez.
23:19I thought it could go either way
23:20in the last two.
23:22Could you imagine in another sport
23:24just to make a little bit of an analogy, Brian?
23:26You know, you're playing Tiger Woods
23:28and, you know, he hits him pretty long, right?
23:30So let's change the fairway.
23:32Let's make it 100 yards
23:33instead of 300 yards.
23:35I think they did that.
23:37I don't think you could do that.
23:38You're playing Tiger Woods.
23:39I don't think you could say,
23:40you know what, I want to make this
23:41a 100-yard fairway instead of 350.
23:44They wanted a Tiger-proof, of course.
23:46They tried to Gomez-proof this ring.
23:48Exactly.
23:49Make it tighter and tighter,
23:50make you fight in a small space
23:51where you could not possibly escape the big man.
23:54You have some leeway,
23:55but there are limits to how small you can go.
23:57Now, again, I talked about it earlier.
23:58There's two ways to deal with a taller man
24:01as Gomez is trying to do with Klitschko.
24:04One is to work your way in,
24:06one is to step out a little bit,
24:07entice the taller man to give up his height.
24:09Now, Gomez is looking to do it by walking in,
24:12but you need to use more than one jab.
24:15When there's distance,
24:16distance dictates how many jabs you need to get in.
24:19At that distance,
24:20with a tall man like Klitschko,
24:22you need two or three.
24:23That was a beautiful jab there, Teddy.
24:24Just snapped it right off.
24:25He's starting to land more cleanly,
24:27and Gomez, if you look at his right eye,
24:29is now starting to puff up.
24:30So while Klitschko, you know,
24:32it's not apparent that he is just strafing the face of Gomez,
24:36you can see the effect of just several clean shots,
24:40jabs, right hands, landing right over that eye.
24:43Well, both men have been cut badly over their left eye,
24:47their scar tissue with both men.
24:49And Gomez has been involved in head clashes,
24:53headbutts before.
24:54If he gets in close,
24:57the danger could be to the taller man with a headbutt.
25:00Because if he gets in there,
25:02the shorter man's coming up with his skull.
25:04And obviously, the one who's going to get the damage
25:06will be the man who's above,
25:08and that would be Klitschko.
25:09So you can look for that if Gomez gets inside.
25:13Does he use his head a little bit?
25:16Final seconds of the fourth round,
25:18and Vitaly Klitschko starts to take
25:21a little better control of the action,
25:23but still a stern test
25:24from the former Cruiserweight champion.
25:31I'm comfortable in jeans that are tough.

26:19Tonight at 9 on ESPN.
26:20There's that right eye of Juan Carlos Gomez.
26:26You see a bloodshot start to pop up underneath and above
26:31as the right hands are starting to come a little more surely
26:35from Vitaly Klitschko.
26:36And the damage is starting to take effect.
26:38Brian Kenney, Teddy Atlas, WBC championship fight
26:42in the heavyweight division.
26:43Vitaly Klitschko, the champ, won that belt
26:45from Sam Peter in October.
26:47Former Consensus heavyweight champion of the world,
26:50the Ring Magazine champion of the world
26:52before he retired and went away from the ring
26:54for about four years.
26:56Brian, that's a picture you just saw a moment ago
26:59of the two embracing on the inside, tying up.
27:02That's a picture you do not want to see
27:05if you're a fan or a backer of Gomez.
27:08He's a shorter man.
27:09He works like hell.
27:10To get in close, you want to do something.
27:13You do not want to tie up
27:14or allow yourself to be tied up.
27:16Because he is starting to pay that price
27:18that you mentioned, Teddy.
27:19On the way in, look at his eye.
27:23Yeah, there's a tax that's told
27:26on a fighter in that ring,
27:28especially when you're a shorter fighter.
27:29There's a charge to get inside.
27:32And again, the charge
27:33in the boxing ring is punches.
27:36You know what?
27:37As they do tie up, and that benefits Klitschko,
27:40keep an eye on how long
27:43or how short each Klitsch is.
27:45Daniel Vandeweel of Belgium, the referee.
27:48Little blow to the right eye of Kovac, I believe.
27:50Right.
27:51I believe so as well.
27:52Yeah, there it is now, trickling down
27:53and a little more than trickle at this point.
27:56Coming down as that eye that was puffed up
27:58earlier in the round is now bleeding.
28:00Teddy, I was just going to say,
28:01a referee does have a choice when men Klitsch.
28:03You can say fight out.
28:04You can have guys fight out of a Klitsch,
28:07or you can break them up yourself.
28:09And each time you break it up,
28:10now you're benefiting the man
28:12who is tall like Klitschko,
28:13who can now reset and say,
28:15okay, now you've got to get back inside on men.
28:17Oh, that's a good point.
28:17A lot of people complain
28:18that you don't have a lot of fighters
28:22that behave like the fighters
28:23of the 30s, the 40s, the 50s,
28:26where you have so much more action
28:27and guys could develop.
28:28A lot of people say
28:29you don't have good judges anymore,
28:31and you don't have really developed referees anymore
28:34that understands the sport
28:36and the dimensions they need to.
28:38And right now you see Klitschko
28:40controlling range a little bit.
28:41I see a change in body language in Gomez, Teddy.
28:44I wonder if that cut has kind of
28:45causing Gomez to become a little undone.
28:48I don't know if it's subtle.
28:50I just looked at it the way Gomez
28:51suddenly just got looser,
28:53a little more desperate,
28:54feeling that blood.
28:55That blood is not pouring into his eye.
28:56It's not that it's not anything,
28:58but it does bother a lot of fighters
29:01when they get blood near their eye.
29:02Well, 75% of this game
29:04and a lot of games professionally is mental.
29:08And when you get cut,
29:09a fighter can be discouraged.
29:11Whether the blood of striking his vision or not,
29:14he can start to connect that
29:16with his success rate.
29:18Right.
29:18You know, well, he must not be doing good.
29:20And that can start to bring him
29:22into a negative spiral downwards.
29:24And a fighter, again,
29:27the physical part is one thing,
29:28but the mental part,
29:29the most important,
29:31keep your concentration,
29:32keep your confidence.
29:33And again,
29:35Gomez always trying to get in,
29:36but he's using one jab
29:37and he's falling short.
29:39With a tall man like Klitschko,
29:41it dictates you use two or three
29:44to close that range.
29:46That's a damaging round
29:47for Juan Carlos Gomez there,
29:49cut in the round,
29:50but again,
29:50not just on one shot,
29:52but Klitschko repeatedly battered that eye.
29:54And next Friday on Friday Night Fights,
29:56March 27th, 10 p.m. Eastern,
29:59we christen Los Angeles' newest boxing venue.
30:02Our main event showcasing
30:04number seven in the world,
30:05Samuel Peter,
30:06against the next big American heavyweight hopeful,
30:08Fast Eddie Chambers.
30:09I need to have that chance
30:11to show the world
30:13me beating Sam Peter
30:14will put me right in this spot,
30:17and that's where I need to be.
30:20ESPN,
30:21your boxing authority.
30:22This is an ESPN boxing special right now.
30:25Sam Peter will have a lot to prove
30:26next week against Eddie Chambers,
30:29a skilled big man.
30:30As we get back to this fight,
30:31Klitschko and Gomez,
30:32Gomez trying to smile there,
30:34doing a good job on that cut
30:35as they stem the flow of blood,
30:36but that is in a bad spot, Teddy,
30:38as it is, in fact, on the eyelid.
30:41And that blood can get into his eye.
30:45And the man doing that good job
30:47on the cuts in Gomez's corner
30:49is Mark Vaz,
30:51an experienced cutman and cornerman.
30:53Look, you can see a lot of good fights,
30:55and you can point to a number
30:57of different things,
30:57but what comes to mind recently,
30:59Teddy, is Juan Diaz
31:00against the great Juan Manuel Marquez.
31:03Once Diaz was cut,
31:04it changed the fight.
31:05Now, Marquez may have
31:06knocked him out anyway,
31:07but that was a high-level,
31:08excellent fight.
31:09And when a man gets cut,
31:11he can start to get
31:11a little looser in there
31:13than he was,
31:13and that might be happening
31:14to Gomez right here.
31:16Yeah, the men or the fighters
31:17or the athletes
31:18or any professionals
31:20who haven't really gotten
31:22a stranglehold
31:23on what the essentials
31:25of being a pro is,
31:26which is to control yourself
31:28no matter what the environment.
31:30A real pro does not
31:31get swayed by a cut,
31:34but how many real pros exist
31:36today in any profession?
31:38Well, Gomez is vastly
31:39experienced, Teddy,
31:40so maybe he gets it
31:41back on course here.
31:43Of course, that's coupled
31:43with who you're facing,
31:45and he's facing a big,
31:47skilled, and now tough man.
31:49Yeah, but there's
31:49a universal language,
31:51and Gomez just spoke to me.
31:53You didn't hear him?
31:54He said,
31:55I'm not together,
31:55because he just got
31:56on the inside,
31:57and he embraced
31:58the taller man.
32:00Look, he put his hands
32:01behind him.
32:01You put your hands
32:02behind him, man.
32:03You're telling me,
32:04you're telling that fighter,
32:05I don't want to fight.
32:07I want a silent agreement,
32:09a silent contract.
32:10You don't hit me,
32:11I won't hit you.
32:13See, now there's
32:13Vanderwill.
32:14Good for him.
32:15See, I love that type
32:15of referee that said,
32:16fight out.
32:17That's what you need.
32:18Fight out, fellas.
32:19Gomez gets tripped up.
32:22So that's a slip,
32:24but again, physically,
32:25Gomez is not what he was
32:27a few rounds earlier.
32:28Ryan, what do we see?
32:29We see Gomez, you know,
32:31groping a little bit,
32:32walking into punches,
32:34you know, stepping forward
32:35with this taller man.
32:37What do we not see?
32:39Again, we do not see
32:40two speed jams
32:41to close that gap,
32:44to keep Klitschko busy
32:46as he comes forward
32:47so he doesn't pay a price
32:49as he walks in.
32:52And again, hands behind Klitschko.
32:54That means Gomez,
32:56speaking that universal
32:57is the language.
32:57He's yelling to me,
32:59I'm not in control of myself,
33:01I'm not confident,
33:02I'm not disciplined,
33:03and I'm not going to win
33:04this fight this way.
33:05Vanderwill has given him
33:06an opportunity.
33:07He did just there
33:07because he put his hands
33:08behind him,
33:09just as you mentioned, Teddy.
33:10Vanderwill did not break them.
33:11Fight out.
33:12And that is to Gomez's advantage
33:14if he can do it.
33:16See, I can't yell at Klitschko.
33:18Maybe if you're a fan
33:19and you want to see
33:20more exciting boxing,
33:21you can,
33:22but I can't yell at Klitschko
33:24for tying up on the inside.
33:25He's the taller man.
33:26He can't use those
33:27long arms inside.
33:28So he's doing something smart.
33:30Gomez doing something weak
33:33and something that is going
33:35to hinder his chances to win.
33:37There's a cut on Klitschko's
33:38forehead now
33:39from the head,
33:40but I talk...
33:41Yeah, they both came close.
33:42Gomez early, Brian,
33:43being involved with that head inside.
33:46And I would have to say
33:47that that probably came from a head.
33:51They both have come together
33:53a number of times,
33:54and at first I thought
33:54the blood may have been
33:55from Gomez on Klitschko,
33:56but no,
33:57that blood is indeed
33:59from a cut
34:00above the hairline
34:02on Vitaly Klitschko,
34:03but the blood started
34:04to come down
34:04so he could feel it
34:05in his eye.
34:06We'll keep it here.
34:07All right, so is there a cut
34:08at this point already?
34:09Yeah, he's already bleeding, Brian.
34:11And right here,
34:12what you see is
34:13Gomez being out of sorts,
34:16being off balance,
34:17Gomez landing that power hand,
34:19the hand that he looks for,
34:20the left hand,
34:21and getting an opportunity
34:23because Klitschko
34:23went straight back.
34:24There's the cut.
34:25How would he have gotten
34:26cut up there, Teddy?
34:26I was just very high up
34:27on his head.
34:28Could he have brought
34:29his head down to that point?
34:30Yes, well, that's what
34:31I was talking about
34:32early in a fight,
34:33that Gomez is known
34:34for getting involved
34:35in head clashes,
34:36and when you get inside,
34:38the only way that can happen
34:39is if the taller man,
34:40of course, obliges
34:40and bends down a little bit.
34:42And if he bends down,
34:43he's going to get the worst of it
34:44as he did
34:45because the shorter man,
34:47Gomez,
34:47is going to come up
34:48with his skull.
34:49I would say he bent down
34:51and obviously a little bit
34:52on that side.
34:54And again,
34:54you would not think
34:55that a punch
34:56would have provided
34:57that kind of damage.
35:00Certainly didn't see it.
35:01Again, we're assuming,
35:02we haven't seen a replay,
35:04that that cut was caused
35:06by a headbutt,
35:06but I think it's
35:07a pretty good assumption
35:08being where the cut
35:10took place.
35:12Again,
35:13a knot in a terrible spot.
35:14Again,
35:14Gomez is cut
35:15above his right eye
35:17on the right eyelid,
35:19so that's a very bad spot
35:20for a cut
35:20as we start round seven.
35:22Vittim Lee Klitschko,
35:24WBC champion,
35:25defending his belt,
35:26is cut above the hairline,
35:28so you would figure
35:29if that's not must in any way,
35:31it would take quite a shot
35:32for it to must that,
35:32you could control
35:33the bleeding
35:34and it doesn't have
35:34to bleed into your eye
35:35very quickly
35:37at the very least.
35:38Yeah, the good news
35:38about a cut up
35:41in the scalp
35:41up around the skull area
35:44is, one,
35:45the doctors don't look
35:46to stop it
35:47because it's not
35:48going to be
35:49permanent damage
35:50around the eyes
35:51or around the face,
35:52so they don't worry
35:53about that.
35:54The only problem
35:55is sometimes
35:55it can pump
35:56a little bit,
35:57and then, of course,
35:58it can run down
35:59and obscure your vision.
36:00Right now,
36:01they have it stopped.
36:08The cut man
36:09who did that job
36:11on Klitschko
36:12was Jacob Duran
36:14in the corner
36:16of Klitschko.
36:18These guys used
36:18to spar together,
36:19Teddy,
36:20so they're both
36:21known entities.
36:23Well, Gomez thought
36:24he knew something
36:25coming in
36:25as he smiles
36:26again at Klitschko.
36:27Oh, and he comes
36:27and connects
36:28with a good left hand
36:29and backs it up
36:29with another.
36:30Now, look,
36:31we said early,
36:32I said it early,
36:33Brian, win or lose,
36:34Gomez cannot complain
36:36at the end
36:36of this fight
36:36and say,
36:37gee, he was too long,
36:38he was too tall,
36:38he couldn't get close.
36:39He has gotten close.
36:41He must do something
36:42about it
36:43when he gets there.
36:44Good right hand
36:44from Vitaly Klitschko
36:45backs up Gomez again.
36:49And again,
36:50if I'm Klitschko,
36:51I think Klitschko
36:52strategically
36:53giving Gomez
36:54a little chance
36:55by giving up his night.
36:57Oh, strong right hand,
36:58and Gomez is hurt
36:59and down he goes.
37:00Strong right hand
37:01from Klitschko
37:01and Gomez
37:02could not stay up.
37:04Mandelweil will give the count.
37:09A clubbing shot
37:10from Klitschko,
37:11the first knockdown
37:12of the fight
37:13here in round seven.
37:14And again,
37:14that's the punch
37:15that Klitschko's
37:16always looking for
37:17and you look for
37:18against the Southcourt.
37:19He's still laying.
37:19What Klitschko has to do now,
37:20Brian,
37:21is not get too close,
37:22keep enough range
37:24where he can keep
37:24that offense going
37:25and he's doing
37:26a pretty good job
37:27of it right now.
37:28Another sharp right hand.
37:29Klitschko moves in
37:30and will try to finish.
37:32Look for the uppercut now
37:33as Gomez starts
37:34to fall forward
37:35a little bit.
37:36That can be
37:37a very good punch
37:38as they fall
37:39to the ground
37:40as they get tangled up.
37:42Gomez was trying
37:42to clinch
37:43and would not let go
37:44of Vitaly Klitschko.
37:46In survival mode here.
37:48Less than 30 seconds
37:49to go in the round
37:49and Gomez
37:50is taking abuse.
37:52Now you just said
37:52the word survival mode
37:53but Gomez is not
37:55tying up now.
37:56That's what he needs
37:57to do.
37:57He's allowing Klitschko
37:59to keep his hands free.
38:01Gomez right now,
38:02he's lost his round.
38:03He can't win this round.
38:04He needs to survive
38:05the round.
38:06He needs to do that.
38:07Grab, hold on
38:08and kill the clock.
38:10Final seconds
38:11and Gomez
38:12does indeed
38:13barely survive
38:15this round.
38:16Tremendous round seven
38:17for the champ
38:18Vitaly Klitschko.
38:19Well, it didn't come
38:25out of nowhere, Teddy.
38:26Klitschko had been
38:27working it,
38:27had been landing
38:28right hands
38:29and then it was
38:29a clubbing right hand shot.
38:31There it is.
38:32Kind of a half
38:33sort of hook
38:34hybrid shot
38:35that put him down.
38:36Actually,
38:36sort of an uppercut.
38:38A hybrid uppercut
38:39where he adjusted
38:41the angle
38:41to where the opening was
38:43and that's what
38:44experienced fighters do.
38:45There's a straight right hand.
38:49That's another punch.
38:51Not the one
38:52that put him down.
38:55And again,
38:56the right hand,
38:57the hand that you look for
38:59when you're fighting
38:59this outpour.
39:02Well, let's see now
39:03how Vitaly Klitschko
39:04can finish.
39:06Gomez
39:06got through that round.
39:08He's only won
39:09one round really
39:10at best.
39:11I don't think
39:11you could give him
39:12much more than that.
39:12You know,
39:14looking at Gomez
39:15in a corner,
39:16I'm going to take
39:17a venture that
39:17physically he's recovered.
39:19But emotionally,
39:21mentally,
39:21that's the question.
39:23And we're going to
39:23find out the answer
39:24to that very shortly.
39:26After that tough
39:27brawl with Lennox Lewis,
39:30Klitschko went through
39:31Kirk Johnson,
39:32Corey Sanders
39:32and Danny Williams,
39:34beat them all down
39:35and knocked them all out.
39:36Did the same thing
39:37to Sam Peter.
39:39See, this is where
39:40fighters,
39:41you know,
39:41a lot of people say
39:42this is where a fighter's
39:42shin gets tested.
39:44This is where a fighter's
39:45character,
39:47to use,
39:47you know,
39:48just a simple word
39:49and I hate to use it
39:50but his heart gets tested.
39:52How much resolve
39:53do you have?
39:54You've got to dig deep
39:54at this point.
39:55Gomez certainly
39:56is hurt.
39:58His right eye
39:58is puffed up
39:59so he's not seeing as well
40:00and he knows
40:01he's in there
40:01with a man
40:02who can take him out.
40:04Big, strong,
40:056'7",
40:06250-pounder.
40:07Now the bad news
40:09for Gomez,
40:10we all know it.
40:11He's hit on the floor
40:12and look at the scorecard.
40:14He's way behind.
40:16The good news is
40:17Klitschko still gives up
40:18his height,
40:19still allows you
40:20by pouring with his jab,
40:22not pouring,
40:23fully throwing the jab
40:24and extending it,
40:25he allows you
40:26to get close
40:27and Gomez
40:27needs to get close
40:29to pull this fight
40:30out of the fire
40:31and it is in the fire
40:33right now.
40:33Oh yeah,
40:33it's raging
40:34and Klitschko starts
40:35to drop that left hand
40:37which is a good
40:38and a bad thing.
40:39It's not a good habit
40:40defensively
40:41but it's a sign
40:41of just how relaxed
40:42he is,
40:43kind of in the pocket
40:44taking shots,
40:45pot-shotting
40:46Juan Carlos Gomez.
40:47One thing I noticed
40:48suddenly that Klitschko
40:49is doing
40:49from a strategy standpoint,
40:52he's moving
40:52a little bit
40:53to his left,
40:54away from the power hand
40:56of Gomez.
40:56Really the only hand
40:58you have to worry
40:58about with Gomez.
40:59You don't have to worry
41:00about that lead right hand.
41:02He only paused with it
41:03to set up the left hand.
41:05So if you move
41:06to your left,
41:06you basically
41:07take Gomez
41:08out of the fight
41:09because you take
41:11that one hand away
41:12that Gomez
41:13is looking to land
41:14to win the fight.
41:17Well, you know,
41:17U.S. fans like
41:18to see aggression
41:19in the heavyweight division.
41:21You have to say,
41:22Vitaly Klitschko
41:23is bringing that tonight.
41:24Look, he's been effective.
41:25And he brings power.
41:28And he lands
41:29hard, hard shots.
41:30I know
41:30neither Klitschko brother
41:32has really become
41:33a superstar
41:33in this country.
41:35But Vitaly Klitschko
41:36is doing his part
41:38tonight in Stuttgart.
41:41And remember,
41:42Gomez is in,
41:43you know,
41:44unfamiliar terrain,
41:45so to speak,
41:46because he's really
41:47a defensive fighter.
41:48He likes to lay back.
41:49He likes to counter.
41:50Likes to be a little bit
41:51slick and cute.
41:52And he's being forced
41:54to be the opposite of that.
41:55And that's not
41:56his thing.
41:59Gomez eating shots now.
42:02Again, there was
42:02a lot of criticism
42:03of Vladimir Klitschko
42:04when he fought
42:05Sultan Ibrahimov
42:06at Madison Square Garden
42:08and was just content
42:09with dominating rounds.
42:10Gomez is hurt.
42:11Gomez could be done.
42:12He almost turned his back,
42:14and that would end
42:14the fight.
42:16You know,
42:16I think he changed
42:17his mind.
42:17Don't think fighters
42:18don't go through
42:19those moments.
42:19Yep.
42:20I think for a moment
42:21there,
42:21you're exactly right.
42:22He did turn his back.
42:23He was thinking about
42:24getting himself
42:25out of there,
42:25ejecting himself
42:26from the fight.
42:27I think he changed
42:28his mind.
42:29Let's see what he does
42:29in the corner now.

43:24Back here in Stuttgart,
43:25Brian Kenney
43:26and Teddy Atlas.
43:26And Teddy,
43:27I didn't think
43:27as we look at the cut
43:28being addressed there
43:30and dressed
43:31for Vitaly Klitschko,
43:32I didn't think
43:33there was any way
43:34we were coming back
43:34for another round.
43:36I would have put money
43:37on it, Teddy,
43:37that Juan Carlos Gomez
43:39went back to his corner
43:39and his corner said
43:41that's it.
43:42But they have it.
43:43They're sending him back out.
43:44Yeah, but sometimes
43:45what you look for now
43:46is in that kind
43:47of situation,
43:49the fighter
43:50who you thought
43:50was going to be stopped
43:51makes one last hurrah,
43:52he comes out
43:53a little bit strong,
43:54and then the air
43:55goes out of the balloon.
43:57If that's true,
43:57this will be the last round.
43:58We'll watch.
43:59Gomez has every reason
44:01to be completely discouraged.
44:02He's been hurt.
44:03He's been knocked down.
44:04He very nearly quit,
44:06or as they say in Europe,
44:07since that's where
44:08they are fighting, Teddy,
44:09retiring, right?
44:10He's just retiring
44:11in the middle of a round,
44:13but he did think better of it.
44:14He straightened back up
44:15and he fights on,
44:16so to his credit,
44:17even though you've got to figure
44:19there's very little chance
44:20of him winning this fight,
44:21certainly not on the cards,
44:22as he gets hurt again
44:23with a right hand.
44:24He has come back out.
44:25Talking about retirement,
44:27I think the crowd
44:28is a bunch of retired people.
44:30They don't make much noise.
44:31There's a bad cut now
44:32to the other eye
44:33of Juan Carlos Gomez.
44:36I didn't see.
44:36Was that from the heads?
44:38Referee Van Der Weel
44:39taking a point away, is it?
44:41It appears so.
44:45Wow, a point is being deducted.
44:48Daniel Van Der Weel,
44:50referee from Belgium,
44:51must have figured
44:52that that was
44:53an intentional clash of heads.
44:55Why else would you
44:55take a point away?
44:57That makes no sense to me,
44:58but that's what happened.
44:59There was obviously
44:59no warnings before that.
45:01And now he goes down
45:02with a right hand.
45:02Klitschko drops Gomez.
45:03There's very little left
45:04of Juan Carlos Gomez
45:06at this point.
45:08He has been beaten down,
45:09bleeding from both eyes,
45:11but he says he wants
45:13to fight on.
45:15Now let's see if he runs
45:16into the propeller of the plane.
45:19Klitschko pouring it on.
45:20And he'll get it over with.
45:22Gomez pawing,
45:23tries to get in.
45:24One uppercut,
45:25and this will be done,
45:25but give him credit.
45:26He's fighting on.
45:27Well, right now,
45:28Klitschko wants to keep range,
45:29doesn't want to get smothered.
45:30Just enough range
45:31where he can keep
45:32that rainstorm of punches
45:34flowing.
45:37Right now,
45:38the straight right hand
45:39has been the punch
45:41for Klitschko.
45:42He used the jab
45:43just to hypnotize
45:44Gomez to set up
45:46that right hand,
45:47but a change
45:48to an uppercut
45:49might not be
45:51a bad pull.
45:52Oh, a strong right hand.
45:53An uppercut
45:54could be there now
45:55to finish this fight
45:56for Klitschko
45:57as Gomez leaned forward.
45:59And now a left,
46:00and Gomez,
46:01on his last legs,
46:02turns,
46:03and that's it.
46:05Fight should have been stopped,
46:07and it was.
46:07Daniel Vanderweel
46:08says that's enough
46:09as Gomez did turn his back
46:12and was looking
46:13for a way out.
46:14And you know what?
46:15This was the time
46:16to end this fight.
46:17An impressive performance
46:18by Vitaly Klitschko.
46:20Three knockdowns,
46:21very nearly a fourth
46:22right there,
46:23and there's no doubt
46:25who the winner
46:26in this ring is.
46:27Now, Gomez,
46:28former Cruiserweight champ,
46:30Brian,
46:3133 of his 46 fights
46:33were at Cruiserweight.
46:36The bigger man
46:37wound up dominating
46:38this fight.
46:40Vitaly Klitschko,
46:41a knockout winner
46:42in Stuttgart.
46:43We're back.
47:13Get your hot dog.
47:1450 cents.
47:15You want two hot dogs?
47:16You got it.
47:17There you go, miss.
47:19Enjoy.
47:20What about the bun?
47:22I'm not a bun salesman.
47:23The bun?
47:24No, I sell hot dogs.
47:26Hot dogs have a bun.
47:27Hot dog.
47:28That's a hot dog.
47:28That's a wiener.
47:29I sell what I say.
47:30Hot dogs.
47:33And it's watered down.
47:34You have to shake
47:34that up a little bit.
47:35Have a nice day.
47:36Don't forget to tell
47:36your friends.
47:37I'm not gonna tell them.
47:40It's watered down, too.
47:41Oh, I'm sorry about that.
47:43Blow the whistle
47:50on delivery prices.
47:52For fresh delivery taste
47:53without the delivery price,
47:55it's DiGiorno.
47:58I've gone through life
47:59being a guarded person.
48:01I've tried to be
48:01as strong as I could be
48:03and not show
48:05a weak side.
48:08But with Karen,
48:09she breaks down my defenses.
48:11She knows my, you know,
48:12my weak side,
48:13my stick side.
48:15We're walking down the beach
48:16and Karen reaches out
48:17and grabs my hand.
48:18Just, my heart just melts.

48:30Unbelievable action!
48:32Bigger rivals,
48:33simmering feuds,
48:34old grudges,
48:35settled the hard way.
48:36It is over!
48:37It is over!
48:38Classic Boxing,
48:39weeknights,
48:408 Eastern,
48:40only on ESPN Classic.
48:44There are the heavyweight champions
48:46of the world.
48:47There are two of them.
48:49Vitelli
48:49and Wladimir Klitschko.
48:51There isn't one heavyweight champion
48:52and that would help
48:53the sport of boxing immensely.
48:55But there really are two
48:57and they're the top two
48:58and there's really
48:59very little question about that
49:01and they will never fight each other
49:03so we'll never know
49:03who is really the heavyweight champ.
49:05But Vitelli Klitschko,
49:06impressive enough
49:07here again tonight,
49:08Teddy,
49:08where he knocks out Sam Peter
49:10after nearly a four-year layoff
49:11and now punishes
49:12Juan Carlos Gomez,
49:14a former cruiserweight champ.
49:15Yeah,
49:16he did what
49:17was available for him
49:19to do.
49:20He took care of a man
49:22who's been a smaller man
49:23throughout his career,
49:25a man who was not able
49:26to solve the height difference,
49:29the length difference
49:30and paid a price
49:31as I suggested early.
49:33Klitschko
49:33took the stance
49:35where I'm going to charge
49:36for real estate
49:36and the charge was right hands
49:38as Gomez tries to get forward.
49:41Teddy,
49:41again,
49:42he was gone for nearly four years
49:43and we were thinking,
49:44well,
49:44maybe Sam Peter
49:45was just awful that night
49:46but Gomez certainly came in
49:48with a lot of spirit
49:49at the very least here tonight
49:50so you tell me,
49:51assess the level of performance
49:53from Vitelli Klitschko
49:54considering he is
49:5537 years old now.
49:57Yeah,
49:57and don't forget Gomez is 35
49:58so he didn't have
50:00a spring chicken
50:00in front of him either.
50:02There's not many spring chickens
50:03out there, Teddy.
50:04Well,
50:04there are some
50:04but they're not ones
50:06that you really want to applaud
50:07and look at in the ring
50:08or pay money to watch
50:10and I think that has to be
50:12in the equation
50:12when you talk about
50:13the assessment
50:14of any heavyweight today.
50:16You have to talk about
50:16the overall division.
50:18The landscape
50:19is a landscape
50:20that is very,
50:22very favorable
50:23to heavyweights
50:24that have any talent
50:25at all
50:25and Klitschko
50:26is getting some
50:28of the favor of that
50:29right now.
50:30He did a good job tonight.
50:32You applaud him
50:32for that.
50:33You recognize that
50:34but again,
50:35he's in there
50:37with guys
50:37in his last two fights
50:39that were perfectly set up
50:41for him to have
50:42a good night.
50:45It's just important
50:46to give Klitschko
50:47the credit he does deserve
50:48here at the very least.
50:49Again,
50:50he could have a fight
50:51up next.
50:51WBC would like him
50:52to fight Oleg Miskayev.
50:55Klitschko
50:55doesn't have much interest
50:56in that.
50:57He will actually
50:57take his case
50:58to the court
50:59of arbitration
50:59for sport
51:00to try to keep
51:02that belt.
51:02Look,
51:02at this point...
51:03You have to be careful
51:03when you're dealing
51:04with a man like Klitschko
51:05who speaks four languages.
51:07He can take you
51:07to a lot of courts.
51:09That's a good point.
51:11They are willing
51:12to beat you
51:13in many different ways
51:14right now.
51:14In many different languages.
51:15And Vitelli
51:16on top of the boxing world.
51:19Juan Carlos Gomez,
51:21give him credit
51:21for at least fighting on
51:22in bad circumstances.
51:24He never really made
51:25much of a run
51:27against Klitschko
51:28but he hung in
51:29amid three different
51:29knockdowns.
51:30Both eyes cut
51:31and was eventually
51:33beaten down.
51:34Let's hear from
51:34Michael Buffer.
51:36One minute,
51:3749 seconds,
51:39round number nine.
51:42The winner
51:42by knockout victory
51:43and still
51:45WBC heavyweight
51:47champion of the world,
51:50Dr. Iron Fist
51:52Vitaly
51:53Vitelli Klitschko.
52:02Teddy, let me ask you this
52:03before we leave.
52:04What would impress you
52:06from Vitaly Klitschko?
52:07Like, who is out there
52:08that you'd like to see him beat
52:09besides his brother
52:10because he will not
52:11fight his brother?
52:11I mean, quite honestly,
52:15the heavyweight division
52:17is wide open
52:18and I'd love to see,
52:22you know,
52:22I would love to see him
52:23fight
52:24Russell,
52:25Shagiav,
52:26you know,
52:27Alexander,
52:28Povetkin.
52:29I mean,
52:29any of the top guys
52:30in the division.
52:31Let's listen in right now.
52:32This interview is being
52:33conducted in English.
52:34Here's Vitelli Klitschko
52:35in the ring.
52:40And he said,
52:41was it harder work
52:42than the fight
52:43against Samuel Peter?
52:44And he said,
52:44yeah,
52:44I already said it would be.
52:49He said he's a classy fighter.
52:55And Gomez smiles at that.
53:02And he said,
53:03did you think
53:03you'd finished him
53:04in the seventh round?
53:07And he said,
53:08I had to hit him
53:09with a good shot.
53:11And I thought
53:13I might have finished him.
53:14I tried to do it quickly,
53:15but
53:16Gomez took all the shots well.
53:28And he said,
53:29what about the cut on your head?
53:34And he said,
53:35what about the cut on your head?
53:36And he said,
53:38it's something that
53:39Kwan opened up.
53:40And,
53:41yeah,
53:41it was hurting
53:43and it was causing me
53:44a couple of problems,
53:45but it'll be fine.
53:46And he said,
53:46what's next for Vitaly Klitschko?
53:48And he said,
53:49what's next for Vitaly Klitschko?
53:52And he said,
53:53what's next for Vitaly Klitschko?
53:54And he said,
53:57well,
53:58and he said,
53:59there are all four world titles.
54:08There are four world titles and I still have one of them.
54:13And I still have one of them.
54:14And he said, I hope that you'll see the Klitschko's keep going all through the year and into next year as well.
54:32And then he ended up saying thanks for that. Some thoughts there from Vitaly Klitschko.
54:37All right, so there's a translation from obviously the interview conducted in German,
54:40but then translated into English so we could tell what Vitaly Klitschko was saying.
54:45And there's not much room to go except for both Klitschko brothers to just thoroughly dominate the division together.
54:52But they will not fight each other.
54:53I'll give you a fight that I'd like to see.
54:55All right.
54:56Klitschko brothers.
54:57Well, yes, that would be something.
54:58If Vitaly stood there and says, I call out my brother, then we're talking.
55:03Yes.
55:03But that's not happening, they've said.
55:04Then I might be interested in actually watching it.
55:07Well, it's been our pleasure to be here with you.
55:10Brian Kenney and Teddy Atlas with the call tonight here on this ESPN Boxing Special.
55:15Vitaly Klitschko, impressive in knocking out Juan Carlos Gomez in Stuttgart.
