00:01:59brunell whittaker is as self-confident and self-possessed as any fighter alive
00:02:04his only loss was a questionable decision against jose luis ramirez in 1988 whittaker wasted no time avenging that defeat

00:04:16We are live in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where tonight HBO Sports brings you two boxing greats, one right after the other.
00:04:28First, we'll show you a replay of last Saturday night's fight, where Oscar De La Hoya battled Miguel Angel Gonzalez for 12 rounds, some of them surprisingly difficult.
00:04:38Then live, Brunel Whitaker defends his welterweight title against Cuban refugee Diabetes Surtado.
00:04:44This fight is also scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:04:48We are upstairs in the Convention Center Ballroom, 100 feet away from the arena where Andrew Galata's low blows held Riddick Bowe a couple of months ago.
00:04:57Tonight, we look forward to watching another possibly distracted fighter.
00:05:01With all-world, Brunel Whitaker keeping one eye on Hurtado, the opponent in the present, and one eye on Oscar De La Hoya, a likely future matchup.
00:05:10But first, Sweet Pea must get by the undefeated, little-known, Diabeles Hurtado.
00:05:16A live look at Brunel Whitaker as he warms up in his dressing room in preparation for yet another major step in his career.
00:05:25Tonight, an intermediate step toward possible center stage in April.
00:05:30And hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
00:05:33We welcome you to this unusual doubleheader on HBO's World Championship Boxing.
00:05:37Unusual because the first half of the doubleheader is on tape as we take you back to last Saturday night to watch Oscar De La Hoya's 12-round victory over Miguel Angel Gonzalez in Las Vegas.
00:05:47Then we'll bring you back here live to Atlantic City where Oscar will be with us at ringside.
00:05:51We'll talk to him one week later about his experience against Gonzalez, look ahead to the possible matchup with Brunel Whitaker,
00:05:58and then Oscar will sit at ringside with the rest of us as we watch to see if Brunel can fill his half of the draw in the proposed April welterweight showdown
00:06:06by beating Diabeles Hurtado tonight and going ahead toward the De La Hoya matchup.
00:06:11De La Hoya has already cleared his way into his half of the April fight.
00:06:16And he did it with his unanimous decision victory last Saturday night over Miguel Angel Gonzalez in Las Vegas.
00:06:22I was there with Larry Merchant and George Foreman.
00:06:25Let's take you back to the Thomas and Mack Center.
00:06:28All right, gentlemen, we've already been through the instructions in the dressing room one time.
00:06:33Challenger!
00:06:33No, no, sir.
00:06:34The champion!
00:06:35Let's get it on!
00:06:36Yeah!
00:06:37Yeah!
00:06:37Yeah!
00:06:37Yeah!
00:06:38Yeah!
00:06:38Yeah!
00:06:39Yeah!
00:06:39Yeah!
00:06:40Yeah!
00:06:41Yeah!
00:06:42Yeah!
00:06:43Yeah!
00:06:44Yeah!
00:06:45Yeah!
00:06:46Let's get it on.
00:06:48If De La Hoya is too powerful for Gonzalez, as he has been for most of his opponents, this could be quick.
00:06:55You've already heard Larry tell you that Gonzalez is a notoriously slow starter.
00:06:59De La Hoya's fight plan in return is to, quote, attack him like a dog and pressure him from the get-go.
00:07:05And once again, as has been the case in so many recent fights, De La Hoya somehow looks bigger and stronger than a man who weighed in at the same weight.
00:07:19Oscar fading with the right hand and sticking the left jab.
00:07:32No offense from Gonzalez so far.
00:07:40He throws the left out lazily.
00:07:41He throws the left out lazily.
00:07:43Now he fires a jab.
00:07:45First punch from Gonzalez.
00:07:47De La Hoya on the button with those two jabs.
00:07:51And the second one snapped Gonzalez's head back.
00:07:54De La Hoya missed with the left hook.
00:08:01George, I'm just not sure Gonzalez looks ready.
00:08:03Well, Oscar De La Hoya, of course, is a quick starter.
00:08:06He knows that if you mix those jabs up, he added that to his repertoire about two years ago, a stiff jab.
00:08:13Get a guy wondering about it and then come on top of the right hand.
00:08:16The first thing you notice about Gonzalez is is that his head sits still.
00:08:21He doesn't move his head very much.
00:08:24And that's bad news against a power puncher.
00:08:28And right now, Oscar is using that to pile up points with the left jab.
00:08:33Gonzalez starts to fire his own jab.
00:08:37So far, he's been content to let Oscar set the pace.
00:08:43They trade jabs at center ring.
00:08:45Oscar lands the left hook.
00:08:50De La Hoya with this measured punch output.
00:08:53Not throwing as many punches as he did earlier in his career, but trying to make each punch count more.
00:08:59Well, if he can get Gonzalez to throw in jabs with him, it'd be a long night for Gonzalez.
00:09:04Mills Lane is going to tell Gonzalez not to throw low blows.
00:09:07That's one warning.
00:09:09Why would it be a long night for Gonzalez if he throws the jab, George?
00:09:12If he starts trying to match jabs with Oscar De La Hoya, his face will get swollen.
00:09:16And Oscar De La Hoya's got the better because he's educated himself well with a left jab.
00:09:20Right hand for De La Hoya, right past the guard of Gonzalez.
00:09:24Left hook stuns Gonzalez.
00:09:25De La Hoya's sharp from the get-go.
00:09:29Again, De La Hoya blocks with his own right hand and lands his left hook.
00:09:37Gonzalez getting swamped in the first round by the De La Hoya assault.
00:09:41All those Gonzalez betters better wonder why it looks like this for the beginning.
00:09:54They gotta hope their man warms up.
00:09:56A punch after the bell by Gonzalez.
00:10:10And De La Hoya just kind of stared at him as if to say, how dare you?
00:10:15As we go to the corners where you hear Spanish being spoken, our interpreter is Ray Torres.
00:10:21Yes, yes.
00:10:22And
00:10:26É.
00:10:29Okay.
00:10:31Are you okay, now?
00:10:32Is everything alright?
00:10:33I know.
00:10:34Go ahead and stop him.
00:10:35Stop him.
00:10:36Wear it palavra.
00:10:37Stop him.
00:10:38Pija.
00:10:39And then, shhhhn.
00:10:39Throw that right hand.
00:10:44De La Hoya looked like he could knock over a building
00:10:53with his straight left jab,
00:10:56and that set up these hooks later in the round.
00:10:59Jabs in round one by punch stat count.
00:11:03De La Hoya threw 42, landed 30.
00:11:06It was a jab clinic in round one.
00:11:09Gonzalez obviously wants to start faster in the second round.
00:11:35What Gonzalez has to do, is he going to get
00:11:38De La Hoya discouraged.
00:11:41Make him miss with those jabs.
00:11:42Get that head moving.
00:11:45Right hand lead across the top by De La Hoya,
00:11:48and he clocked Gonzalez with that one.
00:11:51Gonzalez starting to loosen up offensively,
00:11:53starting to land a little bit,
00:11:54but De La Hoya is finding some opportunities to counter.
00:11:58De La Hoya goes in real effective
00:12:00with a good stiff left hand.
00:12:02Then he gets this guy waiting on him,
00:12:04and he throws a quick right hand lead.
00:12:08There's a jab for Gonzalez.
00:12:16Steps in and tries to land an uppercut.
00:12:18De La Hoya misses with the counter in return.
00:12:21Well, that was good for Gonzalez for the first time.
00:12:23He made Oscar De La Hoya do something
00:12:24he had not intended to do,
00:12:26throw a right hand that was not intended to be thrown.
00:12:29And that's what you want to do with the young fighters.
00:12:31Make them do what they did not intend to do.
00:12:33Another good thing Gonzalez has begun to do here in the second round
00:12:36is to go to the body.
00:12:37He was all upstairs in the first round,
00:12:39didn't accomplish anything,
00:12:40but he's landed a couple of shots
00:12:41to De La Hoya's ribcage here in round two.
00:12:45Right hand off the top of De La Hoya's head.
00:12:48Gonzalez's offense heating up.
00:12:50The slow start seemingly over with,
00:12:52and now Oscar has something entirely different to deal with.
00:12:54Oscar De La Hoya is trying to work on getting a right hand in now
00:13:00just to find him with the right hand,
00:13:02so he's keeping his left low.
00:13:07Not trying to start anything with his jab at all.
00:13:10De La Hoya cautious here in round two,
00:13:12paying a lot of respect to Gonzalez.
00:13:14Gonzalez able to sneak in a little quick left hook.
00:13:16And save this for Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:13:25He seemed outclassed in round one.
00:13:27He's begun to find the target in round two,
00:13:29but now here comes De La Hoya with combinations again.
00:13:34Seldom you see a young fighter,
00:13:36once a guy drops his hand and showbore on him,
00:13:38De La Hoya hit him in the stomach.
00:13:40De La Hoya lands a left hook.
00:13:42And this is a pro-De La Hoya crowd.
00:13:46We have not always seen that here in Vegas.
00:13:52And I've never seen De La Hoya do this kind of an act.
00:13:56Where you want a corner now to kind of steady him,
00:13:58it's telling him to cut it out.
00:14:00Go back to what got you here.
00:14:05Left hook to the body by De La Hoya,
00:14:07and he punctuates the round with a vicious left hook upstairs.
00:14:12Very good, you're doing very good, okay?
00:14:19Stay alert.
00:14:29Okay, listen very good.
00:14:30You're catching the punches very well,
00:14:32but you've got to stay alert.
00:14:33That's all you've got is about three more rounds, okay?
00:14:35But you're doing very good considering everything, okay?
00:14:38You're just staying alert all the time.
00:14:39You've got to be alert.
00:14:40Once again, the left hand of Oscar De La Hoya.
00:14:52The left hand is his best hand,
00:14:55but he fights in a conventional side later in the round.
00:14:59The big hook.
00:15:00Every fight we see De La Hoya in,
00:15:05he's a little better at something.
00:15:07I have never seen him thunder that jab the way he is tonight.
00:15:11Now Gonzalez steps out in round three
00:15:13and begins to step up the level of his own jab,
00:15:16firing the jab with much more aggression
00:15:18than was the case in round one.
00:15:20Almost as though Gonzalez needed the entire first round
00:15:23to warm up and get ready to fight.
00:15:24Oscar De La Hoya by punch stat computations
00:15:29has landed more than 60% of his punches
00:15:31in the first two rounds.
00:15:33But now it's Gonzalez who's throwing more.
00:15:37And the Gonzalez contingent in the crowd
00:15:39begins to make its presence felt.
00:15:41Well, if you're going to be throwing a good stiff left jab,
00:15:44you don't want to move on your legs too much
00:15:46because that's where all of that stiffness
00:15:48comes from in the legs.
00:15:57De La Hoya blocking Gonzalez's left hook
00:16:00with his right elbow.
00:16:00Missed the counter in return.
00:16:02Short with the right hand there.
00:16:03Short with the jab.
00:16:06Good body punch by Gonzalez.
00:16:08And you know, I've always said about Oscar De La Hoya,
00:16:11the one thing in his armor that was bad,
00:16:13he never tries to win fights on points.
00:16:16He's always trying to set up a knockout.
00:16:20Sooner or later, someone is going to be around there
00:16:22and hear the points.
00:16:24Well, particularly if they can get to his body enough
00:16:27to take away some of the power in the early rounds.
00:16:29And Gonzalez is starting to do some damage.
00:16:37Good left hook by Gonzalez under De La Hoya's chin.
00:16:44And another one.
00:16:45And Gonzalez starting to lead with the left hook
00:16:47to good effect.
00:16:49Yeah, because Oscar standing back
00:16:52trying to get his left jab started
00:16:53rather than moving around.
00:16:55If you're going to move, move.
00:16:56If you're not, keep your head moving.
00:16:59Move your legs or your hands.
00:17:01So as Gonzalez becomes the aggressor,
00:17:03dispenses with the jab,
00:17:05and throws power punch leads,
00:17:06he starts to get effective.
00:17:08But now De La Hoya lands a left and a right.
00:17:26You always tell the fighters,
00:17:27move on your legs.
00:17:29If you're not going to move those legs,
00:17:30keep that head moving at all times.
00:17:32And De La Hoya was moving his legs,
00:17:34and he stopped and stopped moving his head.
00:17:36And Gonzalez has started to beat De La Hoya
00:17:39to the punch at long range.
00:17:41Didn't look in the first round
00:17:42as though he'd have any chance of doing that.
00:17:44Now De La Hoya goes back to the jab,
00:17:45and Gonzalez answers confidently.
00:17:47So Miguel Angel Gonzalez begins to fight
00:17:53as though the first round was an aberration,
00:17:55and he's got some stuff that can challenge De La Hoya.
00:17:59But the one thing,
00:18:00De La Hoya's a puncher,
00:18:01and you don't want to follow a puncher around the ring.
00:18:04You don't want to do that.
00:18:16As we were saying,
00:18:17Gonzalez, you gotta paint him.
00:18:21Okay, okay.
00:18:26All right, now you gotta move your waist.
00:18:32Use your jabs,
00:18:33because the jabs are getting in,
00:18:35and jab and cross.
00:18:36You need to start throwing the uppercut.
00:18:49Go in the middle.
00:18:56Move real well.
00:18:59In the last two rounds,
00:19:03Gonzalez has been able to throw more punches than De La Hoya,
00:19:06not landing at as high a rate,
00:19:08but throwing many more punches,
00:19:10and no fighter in a while has been able to do that.
00:19:13See what De La Hoya does to adjust now,
00:19:15and try to find the opportunities
00:19:17that Gonzalez has to give him
00:19:18to be aggressive.
00:19:19Yeah, De La Hoya goes right to the left hook to the body,
00:19:22because his trainer told him,
00:19:23now, get in there,
00:19:24get in the middle of him,
00:19:25and get that left hook in there.
00:19:28Harold Letterman, how you got it?
00:19:30Jim, two rounds to one.
00:19:3229-28.
00:19:33Oscar De La Hoya.
00:19:34He hit Miguel Injad Gonzalez
00:19:35so hard in the first two rounds,
00:19:37you had to see Gonzalez's head snap back,
00:19:39but the third round,
00:19:39Gonzalez up here.
00:19:40De La Hoya landing two left hooks there
00:19:44as he chases Gonzalez across the rim,
00:19:46and a straight left,
00:19:47and a busting left hook
00:19:49that swiveled Gonzalez's head.
00:19:53De La Hoya is good,
00:19:55and he knows how to do so many things.
00:19:57Sometimes that can confuse you more than anything,
00:19:59because you don't know one thing to do.
00:20:01You got to stick to your left jab
00:20:03and do everything from the left jab.
00:20:05Good right hand to the body by Gonzalez.
00:20:07He misses with the left uppercut.
00:20:08A couple of people
00:20:10have questioned Gonzalez's chin
00:20:12off what he's shown
00:20:13in these first four rounds.
00:20:14He certainly can't do that.
00:20:17A guy who's undefeated
00:20:18doesn't think he can lose,
00:20:20and that makes his chin stronger.
00:20:23De La Hoya's jab continues.
00:20:25An awesome weapon.
00:20:26Three straight solid connects.
00:20:28Snapping Gonzalez's head back.
00:20:32And Gonzalez answers in kind.
00:20:37Low blow by Gonzalez.
00:20:39And Mills Lane says keep it up.
00:20:42That's the second time
00:20:43Lane has spoken to Gonzalez.
00:20:51De La Hoya backing into the ropes.
00:20:53Gonzalez lost two points to low blows
00:21:06in that Lamar Murphy fight
00:21:07back at 135 pounds,
00:21:09August 19, 1995.
00:21:12It's hard to believe,
00:21:13but De La Hoya can win this thing
00:21:14just by using his left jab.
00:21:16Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:21:18Gonzalez hits on the break.
00:21:20Oh, come on.
00:21:25Still no point deduction by Mills Lane.
00:21:28At least three solid fouls by Gonzalez.
00:21:31De La Hoya unruffled fires the left hook
00:21:33and lands.
00:21:43De La Hoya just missed over the top
00:21:45with the right hand
00:21:46after jabbing twice
00:21:47and landing the left hook.
00:21:49Gonzalez still taking everything well
00:21:51and coming back.
00:21:5110 seconds left in this round.
00:21:5910 seconds left in this round.
00:21:59Well, already Gonzalez has lasted longer
00:22:14than Julio Cesar Chavez did.
00:22:16The only punch he's landing
00:22:21is the jab, okay?
00:22:23Move your head.
00:22:24These are moving more, okay?
00:22:26That's your only problem.
00:22:28No more.
00:22:28No more low blows, okay?
00:22:31Be careful.
00:22:32Okay?
00:22:33But your only problem,
00:22:34you're getting hit with one punch.
00:22:35The jab.
00:22:35You're making it miss the left hook
00:22:37and the right hand mostly.
00:22:38The jab.
00:22:39So more head, okay?
00:22:40Move your head a little bit, okay?
00:22:41You're not moving your head enough.
00:22:43You want to just move your head?
00:22:44You heard Emanuel Stewart
00:22:46telling Gonzalez to move his head
00:22:49and this is the reason why.
00:22:50As we noted earlier,
00:22:52a very early start in the fight,
00:22:54he keeps his head standing up there
00:22:56looking to get hit.
00:22:59Not unusual for Mexican fighters
00:23:01who are very offensive-minded.
00:23:08But already I think he is showing
00:23:10that he is the most formidable fighter
00:23:13that Delahoyer has for it to date.
00:23:17Small mouse under the right eye
00:23:18of Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:23:20That's no big surprise.
00:23:21Oscar tattooing him with the jab
00:23:23through four rounds.
00:23:24He landed 25 of 31 jabs
00:23:26by punch count numbers
00:23:28in round number four.
00:23:29One thing about getting caught
00:23:36on the top of the head
00:23:37with those left jabs
00:23:37after a while
00:23:38it affects your backbone.
00:23:40I've been hit a few times
00:23:41when your back go out
00:23:42and it's not that
00:23:42you're being hurt
00:23:44but something happens
00:23:45along the spine.
00:23:46Not only have you felt it, George,
00:23:47your jab has done it
00:23:48to a lot of opponents.
00:23:50Delahoyer blocking the right hand
00:23:51to the body with his elbows.
00:23:52He's done a pretty good job of that
00:23:53although Gonzalez
00:23:54has gotten to the body
00:23:56a few times
00:23:56particularly in round three.
00:24:05Delahoyer's got the rig
00:24:07established the dominance
00:24:08of the left jabs
00:24:09and just slide to the side
00:24:12with it
00:24:12and let that right hand
00:24:13just develop by itself.
00:24:15And you saw Gonzalez
00:24:16taking advantage of the chance
00:24:17to get in about
00:24:18four more body blows
00:24:19as they hugged
00:24:20at center ring.
00:24:22Gonzalez,
00:24:23totally the aggressor
00:24:24in this round.
00:24:25Comes twice with the uppercut.
00:24:27Gives Delahoyer
00:24:28a chance to land
00:24:29the left hook
00:24:30and Oscar clocks him.
00:24:37And another left hook.
00:24:39And another.
00:24:40And Delahoyer thinks
00:24:41he's hurt, Gonzalez.
00:24:43Goes to the body
00:24:44and comes back
00:24:45with a combination
00:24:46and Gonzalez goes
00:24:47to the body in return.
00:24:48Furious action
00:24:49in round five.
00:24:50Another solid left hook
00:24:57and Gonzalez
00:24:57is backed off
00:24:58of his stance.
00:25:00Oscar Delahoyer
00:25:01following his plan
00:25:02to attack
00:25:03like a dog.
00:25:09And all that conspires
00:25:10to slow Gonzalez's
00:25:12aggression down.
00:25:13But still he keeps punching.
00:25:16Well, this is like
00:25:17running wind sprints.
00:25:19After you throw
00:25:19that many punches
00:25:20like Delahoyer did,
00:25:21you take a breather.
00:25:22But you gotta be careful
00:25:23that you're out of range
00:25:24to take that breather.
00:25:29Gonzalez landing
00:25:29the straight left jab there.
00:25:31Something that hasn't been
00:25:32all that easy
00:25:32for him to do.
00:25:34Delahoyer was staying
00:25:35in close quarters
00:25:35and not throwing punches.
00:25:38He's sprinting himself out
00:25:40and he's trying to recuperate.
00:25:41And that's what happens
00:25:41when you're in good shape.
00:25:42You can recuperate.
00:25:43But you gotta make sure
00:25:44you've got distance.
00:25:45This is the kind of fight
00:25:47that a lot of fans
00:25:48thought Chavez
00:25:49would give to Delahoyer.
00:25:51He's getting it
00:25:51seven months later.
00:26:10Gonzalez is bringing out
00:26:12the best in Delahoyer
00:26:14to this point.
00:26:20He needs to come in
00:26:22and as soon as he gives
00:26:25you an opportunity
00:26:26you fake him
00:26:27and then hit him
00:26:29in the upper court.
00:26:30That's the best shot.
00:26:33You make sure
00:26:34you pick him up
00:26:35with that upper court.
00:26:36Let me talk.
00:26:38Here you will see
00:26:46the flurry of Delahoyer
00:26:48in that round
00:26:48with his amazingly quick
00:26:50hands.
00:26:51The big right
00:26:52followed by the left
00:26:53putting Gonzalez
00:26:55on the defensive.
00:26:56De La Hoya
00:27:06has taken some shots
00:27:07but his face
00:27:08so far unmarked.
00:27:09We've shown you
00:27:09the mouse
00:27:09under the right eye
00:27:11of Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:27:12round six
00:27:13of a scheduled 12.
00:27:15Once again
00:27:16in that round
00:27:17Gonzalez throwing
00:27:17many many more punches
00:27:19than Delahoyer.
00:27:20Delahoyer landing
00:27:21at an extraordinarily
00:27:22high rate.
00:27:23Harold Letterman
00:27:27you see something
00:27:29in what Delahoyer
00:27:29is doing
00:27:30that is affected
00:27:31by the rules?
00:27:32Jim absolutely.
00:27:33Oscar De La Hoya
00:27:34measures you.
00:27:35He sticks that
00:27:35left glove out
00:27:36he opens it up
00:27:37and then he whacks
00:27:38it with a right hand
00:27:39and he does it a lot.
00:27:40And a lot of referees
00:27:40won't allow that.
00:27:41You can't open a glove.
00:27:43He holds it out
00:27:44he pushes Gonzalez off
00:27:45and then he whacks
00:27:46it with the right hand.
00:27:47And he's done it
00:27:48one on once.
00:27:48George you think
00:27:54Mills Lane
00:27:54is something
00:27:55of a laissez-faire
00:27:56referee
00:27:56lets a lot of things
00:27:57go in the ring?
00:27:58I don't think so
00:27:59because Oscar's
00:28:00not touching him
00:28:00with that open hand.
00:28:01He's more or less
00:28:02keeping it out there
00:28:03as long as your hand
00:28:04is out there
00:28:04it's part of your body.
00:28:07Another flurry
00:28:07of lefts
00:28:08by Delahoyer
00:28:09two jabs
00:28:09and a left hook.
00:28:11Another good show
00:28:12of tough chin
00:28:13by Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:28:15Gonzalez again
00:28:16takes advantage
00:28:17at close quarters
00:28:18to whack Delahoyer
00:28:19and Mills has to
00:28:20talk about it.
00:28:21Still no deduction.
00:28:32Gonzalez not quite
00:28:33as aggressive now
00:28:34as he was in the
00:28:34last couple of rounds
00:28:35maybe because
00:28:37he's been made
00:28:37to pay so frequently.
00:28:41Delahoyer content
00:28:42to avoid Gonzalez
00:28:44and look for a chance
00:28:45to land another big shot.
00:28:48good combination
00:29:03by Gonzalez
00:29:03he takes a better one
00:29:04in return from Delahoyer.
00:29:06Oscar Delahoyer
00:29:07stands on the ball
00:29:08of his feet
00:29:09and he rides those things
00:29:10like a quarterback
00:29:11in the pocket
00:29:11and he comes back
00:29:12with his eyes wide open.
00:29:13and when he throws
00:29:18the left hook
00:29:19George he does it
00:29:20with murder in his heart.
00:29:22Every punch
00:29:23bad intentions.
00:29:27This is why
00:29:27he has to take
00:29:28when he throws
00:29:29a lot of punches
00:29:30he takes a big rest
00:29:31in between there
00:29:32because it's like
00:29:33sprinting.
00:29:34Takes a lot out of you
00:29:35to throw that much power.
00:29:36another sensational
00:29:38left hook.
00:29:39I'm going to hit my eye
00:29:40in the head.
00:29:40Here we go.
00:29:40Come on.
00:29:43Gonzalez's pace
00:29:44has slowed
00:29:45in this round.
00:29:46Delahoyer
00:29:47has countered him
00:29:48at every opportunity.
00:29:51Now
00:29:52the effect
00:29:52of that jab
00:29:53it made him
00:29:54move his body back.
00:29:55I've seen it happen.
00:29:56I've felt it happen.
00:29:57Those jabs
00:29:58it just affect your spine
00:29:59and make you fall backwards
00:30:00if you're not careful.
00:30:02Oh
00:30:02what a left hook.
00:30:03What a chin
00:30:04Gonzalez has.
00:30:07That punch
00:30:08has knocked out
00:30:09most Delahoyer opponents.
00:30:11Right now
00:30:12he's taking apart
00:30:13a good fighter
00:30:15like a jeweler
00:30:16taking apart
00:30:17a good watch.
00:30:18Fire.
00:30:19Delahoyer!
00:30:20Delahoyer!
00:30:21Delahoyer!
00:30:22Delahoyer!
00:30:26Don't jab at him first.
00:30:27You understand?
00:30:28No jabers.
00:30:29You no jab.
00:30:29Make him he jab first.
00:30:30Okay?
00:30:31Because after you jab
00:30:32and he's picking it
00:30:33and then he's jabbing it
00:30:34back.
00:30:35Okay?
00:30:36Make him jab first
00:30:37in the middle.
00:30:37Okay?
00:30:40All you can do
00:30:42is go in the head
00:30:42more.
00:30:42Okay?
00:30:43More head movement.
00:30:44Okay?
00:30:44More head movement.
00:30:45Okay?
00:30:50Folks
00:30:50these are the kind
00:30:53of punches
00:30:53that are a visual
00:30:56textbook.
00:30:57Later in the round
00:30:59Here we go.
00:31:01Second's out.
00:31:02That's a punch
00:31:05from the front seat.
00:31:08Going after it.
00:31:09Putting everything
00:31:10into it.
00:31:11I don't know
00:31:11if we've ever
00:31:12seen a fighter
00:31:12against an excellent
00:31:15unbeaten opponent
00:31:16like Gonzales
00:31:17go through six rounds
00:31:19landing 67%
00:31:22of his punches
00:31:23but that's what
00:31:24Delahoyer's done
00:31:25according to
00:31:25punch stat computation.
00:31:26Against a fighter
00:31:27who up to now
00:31:28has been landing
00:31:2925% of his
00:31:31allowed his opponents
00:31:32to land 25%.
00:31:33Exactly.
00:31:34Now here you see
00:31:35Delahoyer with his
00:31:36glove open
00:31:37but I think it's hard
00:31:38for the referee
00:31:39to see that all the time.
00:31:41Good overhand right.
00:31:42Good right hand
00:31:43by Gonzales.
00:31:43The first one tonight
00:31:44because Delahoyer started
00:31:46to play around
00:31:47a little too much.
00:31:49Sometimes
00:31:49and he's turning
00:31:50and fighting
00:31:51until now
00:31:51it's called
00:31:52trap fighting.
00:31:53You let the guy
00:31:54have a jab
00:31:54you let him have
00:31:55a right to the body
00:31:56and then the next time
00:31:56he tries either one
00:31:58you go over top
00:31:59and sometimes
00:32:00you can get caught
00:32:01into your own traps.
00:32:03Well Delahoyer
00:32:04went a little
00:32:04left hand happy
00:32:05in the last round
00:32:06but obviously
00:32:07Gonzales
00:32:07either was told
00:32:08or decided
00:32:09I can throw
00:32:10right hand counters
00:32:10over that
00:32:11and he landed a big one.
00:32:12Well when you're
00:32:13a trap fighter
00:32:14you allow the guy
00:32:14to throw a punch
00:32:15but you don't intend
00:32:16for him to have
00:32:17that much power
00:32:17at this stage
00:32:18of the fight.
00:32:20A trap fighter
00:32:21George you mean
00:32:21like a baseball hitter
00:32:22looking for his pitch
00:32:24just waiting
00:32:25for one particular pitch
00:32:27to knock out
00:32:27of the ballpark.
00:32:28That's right.
00:32:28Delahoyer landed
00:32:32another good left hook
00:32:33in close.
00:32:33But it has to happen
00:32:34behind one shot
00:32:35that the guy
00:32:36has confidence in.
00:32:37Allow him to do
00:32:38something that he's
00:32:39comfortable in
00:32:40and then make him
00:32:40pay for it.
00:32:42Setting traps.
00:32:44Oh good right hand
00:32:45body shot
00:32:46and a left hook
00:32:46upstairs by Delahoya
00:32:48just textbook stuff
00:32:49as Larry has been
00:32:51pointing out.
00:32:57And Oscar's doing
00:32:58a good job of it.
00:32:58he steps back
00:32:59and then he circles.
00:33:01Make two steps
00:33:02and then circle.
00:33:03Come on now.
00:33:04Okay Oscar
00:33:05that's down low.
00:33:05Come on get him up.
00:33:06Let's go.
00:33:06Here we go.
00:33:11That's two to one
00:33:12on warnings
00:33:13on low blows
00:33:14if you're counting.
00:33:16Another left hook
00:33:17backs up Gonzales.
00:33:20Delahoya hasn't been
00:33:21able to bring blood
00:33:22from that right eye yet
00:33:23to remember how easily
00:33:24he cut Chavez
00:33:25with a jab
00:33:26in the first round.
00:33:27Good uppercut.
00:33:30Gonzales tries it again.
00:33:31He was open there
00:33:32for a right hand
00:33:33but Delahoya
00:33:34let it go by
00:33:35and now Mills Lane
00:33:36is going to deduct a point.
00:33:38Yeah he's right this time.
00:33:40He's given him
00:33:40every opportunity
00:33:41to be a good guy
00:33:42and he has not.
00:33:43He could have done it
00:33:43before very easily.
00:33:45So that's one point
00:33:46gone from Gonzales'
00:33:48scorecards.
00:33:54Sometimes when you
00:33:54want to work
00:33:55that left jab
00:33:55you got to kind of
00:33:56put it to your waist
00:33:57a little bit
00:33:57just to draw the guy in
00:33:59but you got to make sure
00:34:00that you're pretty alert
00:34:01to his right hand.
00:34:03Another flurry
00:34:04of power punches
00:34:05by Delahoya.
00:34:06Another left hook
00:34:07inside lands flush.
00:34:09Gonzales comes back
00:34:10but if there was any doubt
00:34:11about who won the round
00:34:12Oscar settled it
00:34:14in the last 10 seconds.
00:34:15All right it's very well.
00:34:29After two jabs
00:34:32on the top
00:34:32feint
00:34:34and a right hand
00:34:35to the body.
00:34:39Two jabs
00:34:39on the top
00:34:40and they go ahead
00:34:41and bend over
00:34:41and make sure
00:34:42you throw that
00:34:43straight right hand.
00:34:43You're going to confuse them.
00:34:47Make sure the jabs
00:34:48on the top.
00:34:52You go ahead
00:34:54and fade them.
00:34:55Don't wait for him.
00:34:5969% now.
00:35:04Let's go.
00:35:05Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:06Let's go.
00:35:08Four or five fights
00:35:09ago I don't think
00:35:10Delahoya would be ready
00:35:12from this Gonzales.
00:35:15A year,
00:35:16a year and a half later
00:35:17he appears to be ready
00:35:18for anyone.
00:35:26Round eight
00:35:26of the schedule,
00:35:2712.
00:35:28Delahoya's WBC
00:35:30junior welterweight championship
00:35:32at stake.
00:35:32Harold Lederman,
00:35:33how do you have it so far?
00:35:34Jim,
00:35:3469-63.
00:35:36Six rounds to one
00:35:37Oscar Delahoya.
00:35:38He only ran out
00:35:38giving Gonzales
00:35:39as the third.
00:35:40He lost the point
00:35:41in the seventh round
00:35:42for rabbit punching
00:35:43but that was just
00:35:43an accumulation of fouls.
00:35:45Bill Zane got tired of it
00:35:46and he took that point
00:35:46for rabbit punching.
00:35:47Most of the time
00:35:48Gonzales was hitting low.
00:35:51I have the same score.
00:35:53Now Oscar once again
00:35:54is taking a little breather.
00:35:56He's a sprinter.
00:35:56He throws power punches
00:35:57and he throws them quick
00:35:58and you got to take a break
00:36:00and that's what he's doing.
00:36:01You know,
00:36:05because Oscar's got
00:36:06so much respect
00:36:06for Gonzales,
00:36:08he's probably going
00:36:09to give him
00:36:09an unnecessary beating.
00:36:13If he had not such respect,
00:36:15he would have knocked him
00:36:15out already
00:36:16but he figures
00:36:17I better save something
00:36:18no matter what.
00:36:19Well, I don't know.
00:36:19Gonzales is taking so much,
00:36:21George.
00:36:21His kin is awfully good,
00:36:22obviously.
00:36:24You don't mean that
00:36:25he's carrying him, George.
00:36:26No, not in the back
00:36:26of his mind.
00:36:27He's thinking,
00:36:27you know,
00:36:28I'm going to save something
00:36:29in case this guy comes back.
00:36:30So you're saying
00:36:31that Gonzales has showed
00:36:32enough of him
00:36:33that he's not going
00:36:33to spend himself
00:36:34on one big long rally.
00:36:37And if he,
00:36:37it's because of
00:36:38the respect factor.
00:36:40Delahoya landing
00:36:41two more left hooks.
00:36:43The one about 20 seconds ago
00:36:44was another
00:36:45that might have finished
00:36:46most of his previous opponents.
00:36:48Yeah, because he's,
00:36:48he's been listening
00:36:49to the propaganda
00:36:50about this guy
00:36:51is a good fighter.
00:36:52He's undefeated.
00:36:52He's the best.
00:36:54You don't just go to sleep
00:36:55and say,
00:36:55ah, that means nothing to me.
00:36:57Delahoya is always
00:37:00kind of sparing
00:37:01with the right hand.
00:37:02He's never been,
00:37:03he's never been
00:37:03a real frequent
00:37:04right hand puncher
00:37:05because he has
00:37:05so much confidence
00:37:06in his left jab
00:37:07and his left hook.
00:37:08But some observers
00:37:09are now suggesting
00:37:10to us at ringside
00:37:10that maybe Oscar's
00:37:12hand or shoulder
00:37:13is hurt
00:37:13because he's throwing
00:37:14the right so infrequently.
00:37:15Let's keep an eye
00:37:16on that, George.
00:37:18Of course,
00:37:18when you're this good
00:37:19with the left hand,
00:37:20you might just hold
00:37:21it back in reserve.
00:37:22Now he's dropping
00:37:23his hand
00:37:23to set those traps again.
00:37:25Makes two steps back
00:37:26and circles around
00:37:27and this guy
00:37:28seemed to follow him
00:37:29right into the trap.
00:37:30Now he's throwing
00:37:30right hands.
00:37:31I think the right hand
00:37:32is fine.
00:37:33I think he's just
00:37:33doing so much damage
00:37:35with the left,
00:37:35he's sticking with it.
00:37:37Now he's
00:37:37stepped back,
00:37:39he jabbed,
00:37:39and then he fakes
00:37:40like he's gonna
00:37:40throw a jab
00:37:41and doesn't tell him
00:37:42what may come.
00:37:42A left hook
00:37:43or a right hand?
00:37:45This round has been
00:37:46another boxing clinic
00:37:47for Delahoya
00:37:48as Gonzalez has once again
00:37:49slowed the pace
00:37:51and Miguel Angel
00:37:52is not doing
00:37:52any damage to Oscar
00:37:53who is piling up points
00:37:55with the left jab
00:37:56and the left hook.
00:38:01Gonzalez's punches
00:38:02seemingly slowing down
00:38:03just a little bit,
00:38:04George.
00:38:10Delahoya is such
00:38:11a student of boxing.
00:38:12He's wanting to learn
00:38:13something all the time.
00:38:14Hey!
00:38:22And there you see
00:38:32the great,
00:38:34the legendary
00:38:35Willie Pep
00:38:36brought here
00:38:37because
00:38:38Jesus Rivera,
00:38:41the trainer of
00:38:42Delahoya,
00:38:44has used him
00:38:45as a model
00:38:46for Delahoya.
00:38:48That doesn't mean
00:38:49that Delahoya
00:38:49is trying to fight
00:38:51like Pep.
00:38:53What he is trying
00:38:54to learn about Pep
00:38:55is how to stay
00:38:57in control,
00:38:59how to use
00:38:59your intelligence
00:39:01in the ring
00:39:01as well as
00:39:02your fists.
00:39:04And when you get
00:39:05to meet these guys,
00:39:06it brings a little
00:39:07extra confidence
00:39:08to you
00:39:08that they would be
00:39:09associated with you
00:39:10and not the other guy.
00:39:11what the ice.
00:39:32Believe me,
00:39:33Delahoya has thrown
00:39:34his best shots early on
00:39:36and he knows this guy
00:39:36is going to be around
00:39:37unless he catches him.
00:39:41What a hard right hand.
00:39:44Oscar Delahoya
00:39:45has scored
00:39:45late knockouts
00:39:46before.
00:39:47He knocked out
00:39:47John Avila in the ninth,
00:39:48Jimmy Vidal in the tenth,
00:39:50so he's still thinking
00:39:51a knockout is possible
00:39:52as we get to the ninth
00:39:53of a scheduled 12.
00:39:55Miguel Angel Gonzalez,
00:39:56it would appear
00:39:57to our eyes,
00:39:58ought to be so far
00:39:59behind on points
00:40:00that he needs a knockout
00:40:01to have a chance
00:40:02to win the fight.
00:40:03And I think
00:40:04he's fighting like that.
00:40:05It goes back
00:40:05to what George
00:40:06said earlier.
00:40:07He's looking to set
00:40:08some kind of a trap
00:40:09to land a punch
00:40:10that can change
00:40:11the fight around.
00:40:16Delahoya,
00:40:17it's like,
00:40:17I dare you
00:40:18to throw your right hand.
00:40:21Emmanuel Stewart
00:40:22was quoted
00:40:22against supporters.
00:40:23Now it's about time
00:40:24that the referee
00:40:24warned him about
00:40:25that hand,
00:40:26that left hand
00:40:27out there.
00:40:27You're right, Harold.
00:40:28It's time to get
00:40:29warning now.
00:40:30And also,
00:40:31you know,
00:40:31a wealth is opening,
00:40:32is raised under
00:40:33Delahoya's left eye.
00:40:36So apparently,
00:40:38Gonzalez has landed
00:40:39some of those rights.
00:40:41It's a slight wealth
00:40:42by his right eye,
00:40:43I believe.
00:40:44Left eye.
00:40:45Left eye.
00:40:45And it would come
00:40:46from the right hand
00:40:46leads,
00:40:47which were
00:40:47Gonzalez's most
00:40:48effective punches
00:40:49in those moments
00:40:50when he's done well.
00:40:51And Gonzalez becoming
00:40:52the aggressor again.
00:40:54And his fans
00:40:55and the crowd
00:40:55rise to the occasion
00:40:56to try to build
00:40:57support for him.
00:41:00Delahoya's dangerously
00:41:01dropping that left hand
00:41:02for whatever reason,
00:41:03I don't know.
00:41:04He's carrying it low.
00:41:06You've got to bring it up
00:41:07to stop the shot.
00:41:08And you've got to bring it up
00:41:09to throw the punch.
00:41:10So you need to just
00:41:11keep it up for a while.
00:41:12George,
00:41:13maybe he's tired
00:41:14from throwing it so much.
00:41:15No doubt about it.
00:41:17And that left eye
00:41:18is swelling pretty rapidly
00:41:20now for Oscar Delahoya.
00:41:21So this is one of the
00:41:22bigger challenges
00:41:23that's ever faced him
00:41:24in the ring.
00:41:25As the left eye
00:41:26begins to swell
00:41:27and may conceivably
00:41:28affect his vision
00:41:28in the last three rounds
00:41:30of the bout.
00:41:31Meanwhile,
00:41:31he stiffens
00:41:32Gonzalez with the left
00:41:34and backs him up again.
00:41:36That's what happens
00:41:37when you have a good fighter
00:41:38and you play around
00:41:38and let him in
00:41:39and off the hook.
00:41:40It comes back
00:41:41to haunt you.
00:41:42If you're scoring
00:41:43and you're looking
00:41:44for a round
00:41:45to get to Gonzalez,
00:41:46if you're scoring
00:41:49and you're looking
00:41:50for a round
00:41:51to get to Gonzalez,
00:41:52this is your best chance
00:41:53in quite some time.
00:41:55Right,
00:41:56since the third round.
00:42:02Gonzalez missing
00:42:03with that overhand right.
00:42:04Delahoya cautious
00:42:05as round nine
00:42:06comes to a close.
00:42:08Miguel Angel has chased him
00:42:09around the ring
00:42:09and been the aggressor
00:42:11in this round.
00:42:12And Delahoya tries to finish
00:42:13with one big left hook
00:42:15but misses
00:42:15by a fraction of an inch.
00:42:17Are you tired?
00:42:35Don't worry about it.
00:42:36Now he's going to keep
00:42:38the glove closed,
00:42:38okay?
00:42:44He's going to quit.
00:42:45He's going to quit on you.
00:42:54Go ahead and move that waist.
00:42:58That's that right hand, yeah.
00:42:59Here's the Gonzalez right hand
00:43:01that has been marking up
00:43:04Delahoya for perhaps
00:43:06the first time
00:43:06in the fight
00:43:07in his career.
00:43:08And you heard
00:43:09during the round
00:43:10referee Mills Lane
00:43:12tell the corner
00:43:14of Delahoya
00:43:15to make him
00:43:16stop fighting
00:43:17with an open glove
00:43:18as Harold Letterman
00:43:19pointed out
00:43:20earlier in the fight.
00:43:21And you saw
00:43:22the punch stat numbers
00:43:23for round nine
00:43:23that had
00:43:24Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:43:25doubling Delahoya's
00:43:27punch output.
00:43:28Oscar landed
00:43:28just as many
00:43:29but the judges
00:43:30are likely to be impressed
00:43:32by the degree
00:43:32to which Gonzalez
00:43:33was the aggressor
00:43:34in that frame.
00:43:37Now Delahoya
00:43:38is going to have
00:43:39to establish
00:43:39more than the left jab
00:43:40to keep this guy
00:43:41off of him.
00:43:42If you have to come
00:43:43with some combinations
00:43:44and make him stop
00:43:45then he can move.
00:43:54Part of the crowd
00:43:55beginning to boo
00:43:56as it appears
00:43:57Delahoya
00:43:57is coasting
00:43:58and sitting
00:43:59on his lead.
00:44:00Either that
00:44:01or he's trying
00:44:02to trap
00:44:02Gonzalez
00:44:04just like that.
00:44:10That's why I said
00:44:11it's dangerous
00:44:11to follow a puncher
00:44:12because anything
00:44:13he hits you with
00:44:14can drop you.
00:44:16So when you follow him
00:44:17you better have
00:44:17some punches
00:44:18on him at all times.
00:44:19It's an abundantly
00:44:20clear George
00:44:20that Oscar
00:44:21wants to land
00:44:22the big left hook
00:44:22and get that eye
00:44:23back to the dressing room.
00:44:28Gonzalez still
00:44:29working in there.
00:44:30Delahoya being cautious
00:44:32looking to land
00:44:33one big shot.
00:44:34All Delahoya
00:44:35has to do
00:44:36is to pick
00:44:36his left hand up.
00:44:38Pick your left hand up
00:44:40as Tony should tell him.
00:44:46Because nothing happens
00:44:48with the left hook
00:44:49this is going to be
00:44:51another round
00:44:52in which Gonzalez
00:44:53will have a much higher
00:44:54punch out
00:44:55with Delahoya
00:44:56and Oscar better hope
00:44:57that that lead
00:44:58on the scorecards
00:44:59is pretty safe
00:45:00because the momentum
00:45:01of the fight
00:45:01is changing
00:45:02and Delahoya
00:45:03is allowing it
00:45:04to change.
00:45:17Or maybe
00:45:18he's trying to impress
00:45:19Willie Pepp
00:45:20who once won a round
00:45:21without throwing a punch
00:45:22right?
00:45:23Correct.
00:45:26But this is a fight
00:45:27you're going to have
00:45:27to throw a punch
00:45:28and not only
00:45:29throw a punch
00:45:30but you're going to have
00:45:30to keep this guy
00:45:31out of you.
00:45:32He has a devastating
00:45:33right hand
00:45:34Gonzalez does.
00:45:37You want to be careful
00:45:38not to play too cozy
00:45:39with the scorecards
00:45:40anywhere in the world
00:45:42but a lot of people
00:45:43would say
00:45:43particularly here.
00:45:44why do we think
00:45:48that Delahoya
00:45:50is doing this?
00:45:52Delahoya
00:45:52is having some difficulty
00:45:53out of that
00:45:54left eye
00:45:55and he's tired
00:45:56he's sprinted
00:45:57with some hard shot
00:45:58he's not been able
00:45:59to knock this guy down
00:46:00and he's trying to
00:46:01save himself
00:46:01for the last round.
00:46:02so even though
00:46:05he was landing
00:46:06that jackhammer jab
00:46:07almost at will
00:46:09through most of the fight
00:46:10and winning the fight
00:46:11with it
00:46:11suddenly he stops
00:46:12throwing it
00:46:13and starts
00:46:14and starts to
00:46:15do this.
00:46:22You're in that round too
00:46:24okay?
00:46:25You'll be the new
00:46:26world champion
00:46:27just two more rounds
00:46:28baby okay?
00:46:29Just keep the pressure
00:46:30on him
00:46:30when you get close
00:46:31drop a shot
00:46:31one-two okay?
00:46:33short
00:46:33they're not the ratio
00:46:34short though okay?
00:46:36short rider
00:46:36get close
00:46:37drop the rider
00:46:37short
00:46:38but you're winning
00:46:39the fight
00:46:39now keep the pressure
00:46:40on okay?
00:46:41okay
00:46:42keep the pressure
00:46:45relax
00:46:47keep touching
00:46:52with the upper hands
00:46:53keep boxing
00:46:55the way you're doing
00:46:56when you stop
00:46:57make sure you cross
00:46:58throw that right here
00:47:00round 10 was another one
00:47:19in which Oscar De La Hoya
00:47:20was very sparing
00:47:21in his use of the right hand
00:47:22you heard his corner
00:47:23telling him to go ahead
00:47:24and throw the right
00:47:25I don't know where I've gone wrong
00:47:40De La Hoya's five points ahead
00:47:41including the point that Mills Lane took off
00:47:44in the seventh round
00:47:45for rabbit punching
00:47:46we're on the same page here
00:47:48Harold
00:47:48I don't know where I've gone wrong
00:47:52De La Hoya's face is swelling
00:47:54so rapidly
00:47:54George
00:47:55that you wonder if maybe
00:47:56there's a broken bone in there
00:47:58yeah you wonder about that
00:47:59but I said earlier
00:48:00that if you use a stiff left jab
00:48:03you can't use your legs
00:48:04you'll just get tired
00:48:05you gotta take a choice
00:48:06one or the other
00:48:07I just think Jim
00:48:08we're unused to seeing him marked up
00:48:10I just think he's got a swollen cheekbone
00:48:14I wouldn't think he has anything broken in there
00:48:17well he's much more swollen now
00:48:19than is Gonzalez
00:48:21and it's all happened
00:48:22within the last two or three rounds
00:48:24well you're right there
00:48:25he's often talked about
00:48:29not wanting to walk around
00:48:30with cuts and bruises
00:48:32like a real fighter
00:48:34tonight
00:48:35he looks like a real fighter is
00:48:38and he'll look like that
00:48:40for a few weeks
00:48:41and his jab is getting awful slow
00:48:44Oscar
00:48:44has any confidence now
00:48:46to step in
00:48:47because he's figuring
00:48:48his guy might count him
00:48:49with a right hand
00:48:49but you gotta keep it up
00:48:51this isn't a pretty game
00:48:53don't try to look pretty
00:48:54alright I hear what you're saying
00:48:56George
00:48:57and I think you
00:48:57you might have put
00:48:58your finger on it
00:49:00that he doesn't want to get hit
00:49:01by that right hand
00:49:02on the cheekbone
00:49:04and that's why he's not throwing
00:49:05as many lefts as he was before
00:49:07not throwing as many of anything
00:49:08and interestingly
00:49:10Emmanuel Stewart elected
00:49:12to tell his fighter
00:49:13Miguel Angel Gonzalez
00:49:14between rounds
00:49:15that he was winning the fight
00:49:16I'm not sure that I would have done that
00:49:20get off that neck
00:49:21come on
00:49:21it's not an easy thing
00:49:22for a fighter
00:49:23who's never been hurt in the ring
00:49:24or marked up
00:49:25for it to happen
00:49:26you gotta make up your mind
00:49:27hey this is the business I am
00:49:29I'm in
00:49:29and let's go
00:49:30this is gonna raise
00:49:36a lot of questions
00:49:37about De La Hoya
00:49:38as he goes into
00:49:39the Whitaker fight
00:49:40in April
00:49:41if in fact
00:49:42Whitaker can get past
00:49:43her title next week
00:49:44and if in fact
00:49:45De La Hoya
00:49:46gets the victory here
00:49:47and I think the adversity
00:49:49is really good
00:49:50for De La Hoya
00:49:50now he's gone through it
00:49:52he knows what it's all about
00:49:53and he's doing
00:49:55a good job with it
00:49:56why is Gonzalez
00:49:56throwing so few punches
00:49:58in this round
00:49:58George
00:49:59Oscar De La Hoya
00:50:00even when he touches you
00:50:01a little bit
00:50:01he has hands like
00:50:02like there are bricks in there
00:50:04it hurts
00:50:05you go and miss him
00:50:07and he makes you pay
00:50:07De La Hoya
00:50:17finishing the round strongly
00:50:19three more minutes to go
00:50:21you have to be first though

00:51:03keep boxing
00:51:04eight
00:51:04all right second
00:51:07Gonzalez
00:51:07beat him up
00:51:12Gonzalez told us he would dance
00:51:14to whatever song
00:51:16that De La Hoya sings
00:51:18meaning he would fight him
00:51:20according to the way
00:51:21De La Hoya fought him
00:51:23Right now, he's the one that has to sing the song.
00:51:29De La Hoya suddenly aggressive again in the 12th.
00:51:32He's not aggressive. He's actually boxing,
00:51:34and the guy's running right into the clenching power.
00:51:36All right. All right.
00:51:38Come on, come on, come on.
00:51:40Three judges seated at ringside.
00:51:46One from Bangkok, Thailand.
00:51:49One from London, England.
00:51:50One from London, Belgium.
00:51:53WBC judges.
00:51:55This is the organization which has produced,
00:51:57among many other controversial decisions,
00:52:00the infamous draw between Brunel Whitaker
00:52:02and Julio Cesar Chavez in San Antonio,
00:52:04September 21, 1993.
00:52:07We saw Oscar De La Hoya turn south by for a second.
00:52:11He said he would do it against Chavez,
00:52:13but now he's doing it tonight.
00:52:15Watch the crowd booing De La Hoya now
00:52:18as they perceive that he's trying to run away from Gonzalez.
00:52:22And protect himself.
00:52:24Time, time, time, time.
00:52:25Take another point off.
00:52:26Take a point off.
00:52:27Take a point off.
00:52:27Okay.
00:52:29That could damage Gonzalez dramatically.
00:52:34And another left hook by De La Hoya.
00:52:37Well, if Gonzalez had any chance to win the fight on the scorecards,
00:52:40it was just damaged severely by the second point deduction by Mills Lane.
00:52:45And De La Hoya is finding the target again.
00:52:55He looks like a fighter in every way now.
00:52:58Not just the face, but the fists as well.
00:53:02He knows how to close the show, George.
00:53:04Does he not?
00:53:05He did this against Molina, too.
00:53:08When a lot of the skeptics thought Molina could take him in a decision,
00:53:11he tore him up in the 12th round.
00:53:13He's doing it again to Gonzalez tonight.
00:53:17He's learned every trick in the book,
00:53:19and he's had to use them tonight.
00:53:21No doubt he would not have been able to survive without his tricks.
00:53:26Gonzalez had heart and a good right hand.
00:53:29De La Hoya fighting with what I personally suspect
00:53:33could turn out to be a broken cheekbone.
00:53:36Which, if true, would certainly delay any fight with Whitaker.
00:53:41And showing some grit in the 12th.
00:53:42Gonzalez appears to have accepted his fate.
00:54:05He wants to finish the fight.
00:54:08He doesn't want to leave himself open to be stopped.
00:54:10Here comes the 10-second signal.
00:54:13Here comes another De La Hoya rally
00:54:15as he attempts to finish the fight with a big show.
00:54:19Will he throw one more left hook?
00:54:21All he needs is one good combination.
00:54:23As we said, gentlemen,
00:54:37this was his most formidable opponent.
00:54:41I don't know if he's going to get the credit
00:54:43that he deserves for doing this
00:54:45to a real fighter.
00:54:47Harold Lederman, how did you score it?
00:55:00Jim, 117, 109, nine rounds to three.
00:55:05Oscar De La Hoya, he gets an extra point
00:55:07in the 12th round because Mills Lane pulled one
00:55:09for hitting on a break.
00:55:10He gets an extra point in the 7th round
00:55:12for the rabbit punching.
00:55:13He's six points ahead because of these six rounds
00:55:16is a one-byte, so 117, 109.
00:55:19Decisa for Oscar De La Hoya.
00:55:20I'm willing to bet you
00:55:21that none of the three official judges' scorecards
00:55:24will be that one-sided.
00:55:26I'd like to see it that way.
00:55:27Just a wild guess.
00:55:29We'll see.
00:55:29Let's go to Michael Buffer
00:55:32to find out who won.
00:55:37Ladies and gentlemen,
00:55:38by way of Caesar's Palace here in Las Vegas,
00:55:41we go to the scorecards.
00:55:44Bob Logiste scores the belt,
00:55:46117 to 111.
00:55:48John Keane scores it,
00:55:49117 to 110.
00:55:51And Annette Hongkongkam scores it,
00:55:54117 to 109 for the winner.
00:55:58And still,
00:56:00WBC Super Lightweight Champion of the World,
00:56:06the Golden Bone,
00:56:08Oscar De La Hoya.
00:56:11Final punch stat numbers will reflect
00:56:25the amazing accuracy of Oscar De La Hoya,
00:56:28who in 12 rounds lands 64% of his punches.
00:56:32Gonzalez with a huge accomplishment,
00:56:34outthrowing De La Hoya by 175 punches.
00:56:37This is a guy who had been limiting opponents
00:56:40to an output of only 26 punches per round.
00:56:43Coming in.
00:56:44So what an effort by Gonzalez,
00:56:46but an easy victory by De La Hoya.
00:56:48And really,
00:56:49this is the category that made the difference, George.
00:56:51212 out of 319 jabs, 66%.
00:56:55And we saw it all.
00:56:56It kept him out of trouble.
00:56:57It saved him from time to time.
00:56:59And it kept his opponent mixed up.
00:57:01Another good lesson on why
00:57:02it's the best weapon to have in a boxing ring, right?
00:57:04Not a left jab.
00:57:04It's going to be a hard career.
00:57:05Unanimous decision for De La Hoya.
00:57:09And Larry Merchant is with Oscar in the ring.
00:57:13Thank you very much, Jim.
00:57:15Oscar, congratulations.
00:57:17Did you hurt a hand during this fight?
00:57:21Well, you know what?
00:57:22Actually, I mean, my thumb was a little sore,
00:57:24but it wasn't no big deal.
00:57:26I mean, I was prepared for this fight.
00:57:28I told everyone, this guy's a tough guy.
00:57:29I mean, he has a chin.
00:57:30He's undefeated, 41 and 0.
00:57:32And I give this guy a lot of credit.
00:57:34What about your chief?
00:57:37You know you have a bruise there.
00:57:39Right.
00:57:39It can hinder you in any way.
00:57:40Oh, yes.
00:57:41He popped me with a beautiful right hand.
00:57:43And I felt it when he...
00:57:44Actually, I saw it coming when he connected it.
00:57:47And I knew I had to get away from it.
00:57:48But hey, that's boxing.
00:57:50I mean, did it hurt?
00:57:51Is it seriously bruised?
00:57:53Could you feel it?
00:57:53Because it seemed for a while you weren't throwing that great jab,
00:57:57and it seemed because you didn't want to get popped by that right again.
00:58:00Exactly.
00:58:00After, like, the maybe 8th, 9th, 10th round,
00:58:04I was weary that he was going to throw that right hand again.
00:58:06But we were being very careful.
00:58:07We tried to box this guy as much as possible, and it worked.
00:58:11I've been saying that he is your most formidable opponent
00:58:14in terms of being in his prime, being undefeated,
00:58:17being at the proper weight.
00:58:19What did he bring out in you, do you think, tonight?
00:58:22Well, hold on, Chuck, it's tight.
00:58:24I believe what he brought out of me was more boxing movement
00:58:27to throw my more jabs, and I was being effective with that jab,
00:58:31and that was the key for my success tonight, and it worked.
00:58:34I mean, Miguel Angel Gonzalez is a very formidable opponent,
00:58:39and I feel that this guy, I mean, was no slouch.
00:58:43All right, this is your last fight at 140.
00:58:45You're moving up at 147, fighting the fighter next.
00:58:50If he wins his next fight, many regard as the best well-awaited in the world.
00:58:54What are your thoughts about fighting the great Pernell Whitaker?
00:58:57Well, now I can focus on Pernell Whitaker.
00:59:02I mean, of course, I was focusing for Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:59:05It was very tough to focus on him, but now I can really focus on Pernell Whitaker.
00:59:09He's next.
00:59:10He's the best pound-for-pound in the world,
00:59:12and it's going to be a very interesting fight.
00:59:13He's a softball.
00:59:14He's very difficult,
00:59:15and I feel that it's going to be a very entertaining fight for that night.
00:59:19Thank you very much for a terrific performance once again, Oscar De La Hoya.
00:59:23Jim?
00:59:24So in the face of a brave and physical challenge from Gonzalez
00:59:28and with the cheek under his left eye,
00:59:31rapidly swelling in the closing stages of the fight,
00:59:33Oscar De La Hoya uses his matchless boxing skills
00:59:36to secure what is in the end a relatively comfortable unanimous decision victory.
00:59:43And that was tape in Las Vegas.
00:59:45We bring you back now live to ringside in Atlantic City
00:59:48where I'm joined by HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant for the first time tonight,
00:59:52and we are joined live by Oscar De La Hoya,
00:59:55just six days removed from the unanimous decision victory over Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:00:00And, Larry, you got him last last week, so you get him first again this week.
01:00:03Well, I noticed the bruise is already gone from below your left eye,
01:00:08but you have a bit of a blood spot in that eye.
01:00:11Is that all from the right-hand punches you were getting hit last week?
01:00:13Well, actually, the right hand was very effective.
01:00:17He did hit me with a good right hand right on the eye socket, and I felt it.
01:00:21And it was very swollen after the fight,
01:00:23but after a few days and a lot of steak in the eye just came down.
01:00:29The one...
01:00:30Go ahead.
01:00:30Do you feel more like a fighter like most of your fans
01:00:33or even non-fans wanted to see you a little bit marked up?
01:00:37Well, actually, I don't feel like a fighter, but I look like a fighter now.
01:00:42The one question I've heard from a lot of people in the wake of that fight,
01:00:45and we asked you about it immediately after the fight last Saturday night,
01:00:48but why so few right hands, particularly in the last six rounds of the fight?
01:00:52You know, I'm trying to still figure it out,
01:00:55and still I can't explain why,
01:00:58but I'm thinking maybe it was meant to be,
01:01:01because when Whitaker wins, if he wins,
01:01:04which I'm crossing my fingers he does,
01:01:06the right hand is going to be the key weapon for that fight.
01:01:09Yeah, exactly.
01:01:10You won't be able to fight him or beat him with just the left jab and the left hook.
01:01:14Exactly.
01:01:14And, you know, Whitaker, we will have a perfect game time for that fight,
01:01:17and he really didn't see much when I fight Gonzalez.
01:01:20He's not even saw maybe 10, 15 percent of what I'm going to show him that night when we fight.
01:01:26Do you think, as you're learning while you're winning,
01:01:30still a work in progress, as it were,
01:01:33that sometimes you focus almost too much on one punch in a fight?
01:01:38For example, before you fought Chavez, forget the name of the opponent,
01:01:42but you threw almost exclusively body punches,
01:01:44and you stopped him with the body punches.
01:01:46Right.
01:01:46Now, in this fight, you dominated and really won the fight with the left jab
01:01:50in the first seven or eight rounds.
01:01:52Is there something that you're going to just be able to go into a fight with Whitaker,
01:01:57should he win tonight, with a plan that you can execute?
01:02:00What happens if you can't execute it?
01:02:02Well, actually, Larry, what really motivates me is that by studying the videotape of Gonzalez,
01:02:07I actually beat him with one hand.
01:02:10And so now going into the Whitaker fight, I mean, I'm going to be throwing combinations,
01:02:14left, right, uppercuts, left hooks, everything.
01:02:16And, you know, it motivates me because, of course, I did train hard for that fight,
01:02:22but I still know that I can give it more.
01:02:24I still know that I can be better physically, mentally for Whitaker.
01:02:28Oscar, Purnell Whitaker has been one of the best fighters in the world in the eyes of many,
01:02:32the best for the past seven or eight years, certainly the best welterweight.
01:02:36What is the logic of choosing him as your very first opponent when you go up to a new weight class, 147?
01:02:43Well, we want to fight the very best.
01:02:45And we feel Purnell Whitaker is the very best welterweight out there right now at this time.
01:02:50Not much question about that.
01:02:52And, you know, in order to try and become a legend in boxing, you have to fight the very best
01:02:57at an early age, you know, in your career.
01:03:01So I feel that right now it's perfect.
01:03:03I feel that 147 pounds is going to be a good weight for me because I feel comfortable
01:03:08and very strong at that weight class.
01:03:10I feel faster, and I feel that Purnell Whitaker is just considered the best pound-for-pound champion
01:03:17out there, and, hey, I want to fight him.
01:03:19Well, it's an amazingly audacious choice, which is going to earn you a lot of respect
01:03:22if, in fact, you can win the fight.
01:03:24I know you're nervous about the task that faces Purnell here, so we'll let you go and relax
01:03:28and sit and watch the fight, and we'll see you again at the end of these next several rounds,
01:03:33how many of them there are, okay?
01:03:34Thank you very much.
01:03:35All right.
01:03:35Thanks very much, Oscar De La Hoya.
01:03:37Larry Merchant, terrific chance to talk to the young man,
01:03:40just six days removed from that victory over Gonzales last Saturday night.
01:03:44In your personal view, how golden was the golden boy in Las Vegas?
01:03:49Well, he certainly was golden at the box office.
01:03:51You know, fighting a largely unknown, unappreciated fighter in America,
01:03:59a formidable fighter but still unknown, he attracted a gross gate of nearly $20 million.
01:04:06No one south of the heavyweight division comes anywhere close to that.
01:04:11As for the fight itself, I'd give him about 15 or 16 carats up from 14 carats,
01:04:18but he'll have to be at 18 carats at least to fight the solid gold 24 carat,
01:04:25pernell Whitaker, or as Whitaker put it, it will be the golden boy against the golden man.
01:04:31All right.
01:04:32Well, let's welcome our own 24 carat, 260-pound heavyweight, George Foreman,
01:04:37to get his reflections on this upcoming matchup if, in fact, it's going to take place.
01:04:42Pernell Whitaker goes into this bout with Oscar De La Hoya seated at ringside.
01:04:46Now, pernell, as we mentioned, has been one of the greats in the sport for the past seven or eight years,
01:04:50but really, George, he hasn't had the spotlight since his 1993 fight with Julio Cesar Chavez,
01:04:56and he wants it really badly.
01:04:58So is the De La Hoya fight on the horizon a great incentive for Pernell that will help him tonight
01:05:03or a distraction which could hurt him?
01:05:05Well, you just got to concentrate on one fight at a time, and that's easy to say,
01:05:09but you can't hardly do it because Whitaker not only want to win this fight,
01:05:12he's going to try to make sure that he looks good.
01:05:15That's an awful, difficult task, especially when your opponent is sitting out there at ringside.
01:05:19It can make it really hard for him.
01:05:21He's had to go up against these great fighters that the crowd's always been pulling for one after another.
01:05:26He's always been the other guy. He's never been that one guy.
01:05:29It's going to be a task for him.
01:05:30Yeah, indeed.
