James Page defends the WBA Welterweight Title against Freddie Pendelton on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00and Hobbs came out to say goodbye about one thought to the present tonight our coverage from the
00:00:04Flamingo Hilton hard to believe this is the first boxing event ever at this hotel located in the
00:00:09center of the Las Vegas Strip built by Bugsy Siegel in 1946 we're at the place that started
00:00:15the strip as we know it it was another hot sunny day in the desert with temperature as usual this
00:00:21time of year in the 100s we close in on our main event a champion in search of recognition James
00:00:26Page puts his WBA welterweight crown on the line against former champion and seasoned pro Freddie
00:00:32Pendleton well even at an early age James Page earned a reputation for his punching power up until
00:00:41now his offense has been his best defense the spectacular KO of Andre Pestrayev illustrated
00:00:46his one-punch knockout power but despite his success as a big hitter his plans now are to
00:00:51lay back and box more under his new trainer Buddy McGirt and that mindset goes into effect tonight
00:00:56against fearless Freddie Pendleton
00:00:59my hitting heart is a guy giving a billy I don't I don't know where the power comes from
00:01:14so i've been blessed with and that's who are my best qualities when I fight
00:01:21I'm not going out looking for the KO against Freddie Pena.
00:01:27He wants another shot at one last rod before his career winds down.
00:01:31His greatest strength against me, and I don't know about his strength,
00:01:34is there any other fighter, but against me,
00:01:37probably be his ring savvy and his experience.
00:01:41He's been in there with everybody.
00:01:43I must go out and use my ability to box, set my power,
00:01:47not go out being off balance, trying to knock a guy with one punch.
00:01:52Trying too hard is not what's going to get the knockout.
00:01:54I'm being sharp a little and getting my punches off
00:01:57and having a relaxing control and pace
00:01:59that's going to fight for me.
00:02:01I am what he used to be, you know,
00:02:03and he's got one more last hurrah, he's got another shot at the title,
00:02:06and he can come out and try to, you know,
00:02:08beat the young up-and-coming stuff.
00:02:10I won't let that happen.
00:02:12If I have to go back to my old style
00:02:13and turn it into a dogfighter, we'll be.
00:02:21Under former trainer Willie Rush,
00:02:26the emphasis was always on power.
00:02:28Page looking for the knockout.
00:02:29Now he's getting away from that style that brought him the title.
00:02:34Turn back to Bobby Ches here.
00:02:35Bobby, why change a good thing?
00:02:36That's been a pretty successful formula.
00:02:38Well, yeah, the formula's great, and he has that terrific power.
00:02:40He has that one-punch crushing power.
00:02:42But one of the reasons may be
00:02:43he wants to harness more of that power for long fights
00:02:46where he uses up a lot late.
00:02:47Excuse me, he uses up a lot of it early.
00:02:49Secondly, he's better defensively when he's boxing.
00:02:51If he can put together a really good defense,
00:02:53have that big power longer into the fight with that power,
00:02:56oh, it's a dangerous combination.
00:02:57Well, that would make him some kind of a complete fighter.
00:02:59How about your keys to victory for both fighters tonight?
00:03:02Sure, Steve.
00:03:02Well, first for the champion, he's got to establish an effective jab,
00:03:06sets up the power stuff.
00:03:07The left hook on the inside, especially to the body and head,
00:03:09and the straight right down the middle.
00:03:11Here, Pestriyev on the left comes in with a lead right,
00:03:13which Page blocks with his right.
00:03:15A little bit unorthodox.
00:03:16And the counter hooks right on the button.
00:03:18This is that inside hook we're talking about.
00:03:19It is so devastating.
00:03:21Watch what happens.
00:03:23No need to even count, Steve.
00:03:25That fight is over.
00:03:27His opponent, Freddie Pendleton, well, he needs to back Page up.
00:03:30He can't let Page dictate the pace.
00:03:31He's got to work the body on the inside,
00:03:33slow Page down, and a good straight and overhand right.
00:03:36Here against Rojas, he jabs.
00:03:38Rojas tries to counter back with a jab,
00:03:40but there is that right.
00:03:41His signature punch, the overhand right,
00:03:43and Rojas doesn't need too much counting either.
00:03:50Pendleton's been around a long time.
00:03:51He's got to do that, and he's got to do it every round.
00:03:56Yeah, he's been around 18 years,
00:03:58the veteran, a career that began in rugged fashion,
00:04:00an uninspiring 12-12-1 start.
00:04:03Began to show his talents in the mid-80s.
00:04:05Withdraws against Frankie Randall and Livingstone Bramble.
00:04:08Wins over Roger Mayweather and Sammy Puentes.
00:04:11His big break in 1990,
00:04:12outskilled by future Hall of Famer Pernell Whitaker
00:04:14for the IBF lightweight title.
00:04:16Three years later, he won the belt,
00:04:18beating Tracy Spann.
00:04:19After one defense over Jorge Paez,
00:04:21he lost it to Raphael Ruiz.
00:04:24As the music will bring him in
00:04:26in the lovely sequined outfit.
00:04:30His last two title fights KO'd in the fifth
00:04:32by Felix Trinidad in 96,
00:04:35TKO'd in the 10th by Cool Vince Phillips in 97.
00:04:38Current IBF 140-pound champ Teron Mallette,
00:04:41who we just saw,
00:04:42stopped Phillips in the fifth in February
00:04:44to take the crown away.
00:04:45Tonight, penalties, eighth world title fight.
00:04:47He's two, four, and one.
00:04:49A ring record, Ferdy, you refer to it.
00:04:51Reads like a who's who.
00:04:5271 fights, many wars.
00:04:54What do you think tonight?
00:04:55Do you think he'll be in a survival mode
00:04:56and look to stay away from Paez
00:04:58to try to get inside and cut the distance?
00:05:01Oh, no, no, no.
00:05:01That's not Pendleton style.
00:05:03Pendleton's called fearless for a good reason.
00:05:05He doesn't care who he's in there with.
00:05:06He comes in to fight.
00:05:08I've watched him grow up in Miami.
00:05:10I've watched all of his fights.
00:05:11He is fearless.
00:05:12He comes in to fight.
00:05:13He doesn't care who's in front of him,
00:05:15and he's going to take his chances
00:05:16because he thinks he can knock out Paez.
00:05:18Of course, Paez is a destructive fighter.
00:05:21That could be the wrong way to fight Paez.
00:05:23We'll soon see.
00:05:25Fearless Freddie Pendleton.
00:05:26A lot of experience.
00:05:28And here's the champion, James Paez.
00:05:30His third title defense, a converted southpaw.
00:05:33He's got that lethal left hook.
00:05:35Won the title October 98
00:05:36with that devastating second-round KO
00:05:38we keep showing you of Andrei Pestreyev.
00:05:40First title defense December of 98.
00:05:43Came off the canvas twice in a slugfest.
00:05:45What a fight that was with Jose Luis Lopez.
00:05:48Paez showing tremendous will.
00:05:50And he makes his entrance now.
00:05:54His second defense on the Holyfield-Lewis card
00:05:56at Madison Square Garden.
00:05:58Won via unanimous decision over Sam Gar.
00:06:00He felt he wasn't focused for that fight.
00:06:04I've got to ask you,
00:06:05Bobby Paez says he's going to be more of a boxer
00:06:08for combinations, jabs,
00:06:10not going for the knockout as in the past.
00:06:12Paez told us that's the way he used to fight.
00:06:14But how difficult is that
00:06:16after you've been fighting another way for so long?
00:06:19You know, for some fighters, Steve,
00:06:20it's very, very hard to make those adjustments,
00:06:21especially when those adjustments
00:06:23are significant adjustments.
00:06:24Fighters have a terrible tendency
00:06:26to revert back to what comes naturally
00:06:27because not only do you have to mentally do it,
00:06:29but your body has to be programmed
00:06:30to react accordingly.
00:06:32And it's repetition, repetition, repetition.
00:06:34If he hasn't done it for a long time in the gym,
00:06:36over years, it won't come naturally.
00:06:37He'll revert back.
00:06:38But some guys make the adjustment
00:06:39much more quickly than others.
00:06:40We'll see.
00:06:41Old habits die hard.
00:06:43We check the numbers
00:06:44as we go to the tail of the tape.
00:06:46Page, and this is a big factor,
00:06:48eight years younger than Pendleton.
00:06:49Two and a half inch height advantage for Paez,
00:06:51listed at 5'11",
00:06:52so it might be closer.
00:06:54Page right at the weight limit.
00:06:55Pendleton just under it yesterday's way,
00:06:57and the reach almost even.
00:06:59And the key unified rules
00:07:00for this world title fight,
00:07:01no standing eight count,
00:07:02no three knockdown rule.
00:07:03A fighter cannot be saved
00:07:05by the bell in any round.
00:07:06If an accidental headbutt occurs
00:07:07before the end of the fourth,
00:07:08it's a no contest.
00:07:10If it happens after the end of the fourth,
00:07:11they go to the cards.

00:10:20known as the mighty
00:10:22Quinn,
00:10:23introducing
00:10:23James Page.
00:10:31Once again,
00:10:31our referee in charge,
00:10:32now to give instructions,
00:10:33Joe Cortez.
00:10:36All right,
00:10:37gentlemen,
00:10:38we went over the rules
00:10:38in our dressing room.
00:10:40I expect a good,
00:10:41clean fight,
00:10:42keep those punches
00:10:43up here,
00:10:44keep me good sportsmen
00:10:45like conduct.
00:10:46I'm fair,
00:10:46but I'm firm,
00:10:47you understand?
00:10:48All right,
00:10:49touch them up.
00:10:51All right,
00:10:52Joe Cortez
00:10:52setting the tone
00:10:53right at the outset.
00:10:55James Page says
00:10:56he won't go in
00:10:57being overly aggressive
00:10:58because that's what
00:10:59Pendleton's expecting.
00:11:01He'll try to cut him off
00:11:01and not load up.
00:11:03Meanwhile,
00:11:04the crafty
00:11:05Freddy Pendleton
00:11:05looking to play
00:11:06the role of spoiler
00:11:07here tonight.
00:11:08We'll see if
00:11:08he plays keep way
00:11:10or gets in close
00:11:11and boy,
00:11:11he doesn't waste any time
00:11:12just like Ferdy predicted.
00:11:14He goes right after him.
00:11:15That's him all over.
00:11:16He's got to be careful.
00:11:19Just by his resume,
00:11:20he doesn't care.
00:11:21He'll fight them all.
00:11:22He ducks no one.
00:11:25But he may have to
00:11:26duck Page's money punch
00:11:27at some point,
00:11:28that left hook.
00:11:29And he's got to be careful
00:11:30not to get caught
00:11:31leaning in after a counterpunch.
00:11:32We talked about
00:11:33his strategy
00:11:34and he said
00:11:34he's going to move
00:11:35into the hook sometimes
00:11:36to shut down the gap,
00:11:37shut down the distance
00:11:37so it doesn't generate
00:11:38enough speed and momentum
00:11:40and torque to hurt him.
00:11:41Or he's going to move
00:11:41away from it
00:11:42so he's getting
00:11:43the tail end of it
00:11:44so it doesn't hurt him.
00:11:46Page told us
00:11:47he won't underestimate
00:11:47Pendleton.
00:11:48He respects him.
00:11:50Got to watch
00:11:50for the big right hand.
00:11:52Make it uncomfortable
00:11:53for Pendleton.
00:11:54He's always there.
00:11:55He capitalizes
00:11:56on mistakes.
00:11:57One of the things
00:11:57you can see
00:11:58almost immediately
00:11:58is Page
00:11:59is much taller.
00:12:00I mean a bigger fighter
00:12:02caller, ranger.
00:12:04Good left jab there
00:12:05by James Page
00:12:06again with the blinking.
00:12:07Remember that
00:12:07against Jose Luis Lopez?
00:12:09Right.
00:12:09There's a bad habit
00:12:10of heavy blinking.
00:12:16Some of the greats
00:12:17in sports had that.
00:12:18Gordie Howell,
00:12:19Elgin Baylor.
00:12:20Freddie Pendleton
00:12:21called Page
00:12:22a typical banger.
00:12:23Big left hook
00:12:24goes for pro.
00:12:25The key is
00:12:25stay away from that left
00:12:26of course
00:12:27by that step over
00:12:28close to him
00:12:29and cut the distance.
00:12:33Well, the left hook
00:12:33came in
00:12:34but it came into the body.
00:12:35Not that it hurts
00:12:36any less
00:12:37but there it is.
00:12:39Page can punch
00:12:40his right hand too.
00:12:41Make no mistake about it.
00:12:42His left hook
00:12:43is the better
00:12:43of the two
00:12:44but his right hand
00:12:45is heavy.
00:12:46As mentioned,
00:12:46he is a converted
00:12:47south cross.
00:12:48He started out
00:12:49that way.
00:12:54As a left-hander
00:12:55so he still has
00:12:56a big right as well.
00:12:58We talked about
00:12:58his work in the past
00:12:59talked about
00:13:00working
00:13:00as we see
00:13:01Pendleton
00:13:01get hit on top
00:13:02of the head
00:13:02with that left hook
00:13:03and hurt.
00:13:05He talked about
00:13:05working with
00:13:06De La Hoya
00:13:06in the gym
00:13:06dropping him
00:13:07in sparring
00:13:08and they said
00:13:08they shipped him
00:13:09out the next day
00:13:09sent him home
00:13:10to during
00:13:11services no longer
00:13:12needed.
00:13:12Well,
00:13:13he just folded
00:13:14Pendleton.
00:13:15He came within
00:13:15a few inches
00:13:16of going down
00:13:17there but
00:13:17he
00:13:18resolutely
00:13:19got up.
00:13:20He's not
00:13:20in great shape.
00:13:23He's been hurt.
00:13:24He's been stung.
00:13:25Has been
00:13:25that was when
00:13:27De La Hoya
00:13:27was preparing
00:13:28for Wilfredo
00:13:28Rivera in 97.
00:13:31Page,
00:13:32one of Austin's
00:13:32scarring partners
00:13:33and according to
00:13:34Page,
00:13:35he did deck him.
00:13:39So he's eagerly
00:13:40awaiting the winner
00:13:41of that fight
00:13:42in September.
00:13:47Page's power
00:13:47makes him so dangerous
00:13:48with both hands
00:13:49that on any given day
00:13:51anybody that runs
00:13:52into that could have
00:13:52real problems.
00:13:53All right,
00:13:54break out,
00:13:54break out,
00:13:55break out clean.
00:13:55Come on,
00:13:55guys.
00:13:56How many wrestling
00:13:57inside?
00:13:57Well,
00:13:57Willie Rush,
00:13:58Page said he
00:13:59was from the old
00:14:00school,
00:14:01just didn't see eye
00:14:01to eye.
00:14:02The mindset
00:14:03was always the knockout.
00:14:04Everything was power.
00:14:06Hunter McGirt
00:14:06trying to calm down.
00:14:08All right.
00:14:09Not try to take
00:14:10everyone out.
00:14:11Round one
00:14:11of the books.
00:14:13How you feeling?
00:14:14How you feeling,
00:14:14Sam?
00:14:14Okay, listen to me.
00:14:15Have a seat.
00:14:16Take a deep breath.
00:14:16Listen to me.
00:14:17Okay.
00:14:18Okay.
00:14:19Hey, do me a favor.
00:14:20Do me a favor.
00:14:21Let's put some more jab.
00:14:22Let's tighten up.
00:14:22We know we had him
00:14:23with the hook,
00:14:23so we know it's dead.
00:14:25Okay?
00:14:25Let's stay with the jab.
00:14:26Here, Brian.
00:14:27Okay?
00:14:27Let's stay with the jab,
00:14:28just like we've been
00:14:29doing in the gym.
00:14:30Work that stick.
00:14:30How you feeling?
00:14:32All right, Brian.
00:14:32Not hurting you
00:14:32or nothing, right?
00:14:34Here, here.
00:14:35Let me tell you something.
00:14:36You're waiting.
00:14:37You've got to get
00:14:37off with a double jab.
00:14:38You're waiting
00:14:39to let him get off,
00:14:40and he's getting
00:14:40off one shot
00:14:41at a time.
00:14:42You understand?
00:14:42Right.
00:14:43You've got to
00:14:43step inside
00:14:44and throw it.
00:14:45Move your head.
00:14:46That's the voice
00:14:46of Wayne Simpson,
00:14:47veteran Miami trainer
00:14:48that's worked
00:14:49with him a long time.
00:14:50Don't stand there
00:14:51and mix it
00:14:51when he's too big
00:14:52for you.
00:14:52Okay.
00:14:53In and out.
00:14:53Walk around.
00:14:54Turn his feet
00:14:54and go to the body.
00:14:56When you come out
00:14:56of that body shot,
00:14:57keep your hands high.
00:14:58Come on, Franny.
00:14:59Get off.
00:14:59You've got to go first
00:15:00on the guy.
00:15:02Keep on.
00:15:03Keep on.
00:15:03Keep on, James.
00:15:03Buddy McGirt wants
00:15:04James Page
00:15:05to have different looks
00:15:06each round,
00:15:07make the fights easier.
00:15:09Let's see what happens
00:15:10here in round two.
00:15:12Well, I told him,
00:15:12don't tighten up.
00:15:13He just loosened up
00:15:14both arms
00:15:15as he came out.
00:15:16Just keep jabbing.
00:15:17Let's try the jab
00:15:18this time.
00:15:19He gave him great advice
00:15:19too, though.
00:15:20He said with the double jab
00:15:21he had to work your way
00:15:21inside those big bombs,
00:15:23not let him get off
00:15:24what he wants to
00:15:24when he wants to.
00:15:32And he's doing
00:15:33a lot of moving.
00:15:34There's that left hook
00:15:35by Page.
00:15:3630 pounds
00:15:37and stick his tongue
00:15:37at him.
00:15:38He does that a lot.
00:15:39There's that habit
00:15:40of sticking out his tongue.
00:15:41That left hook
00:15:41was put him down
00:15:42right off the neck.
00:15:43He was off balance.
00:15:44Yeah, it wasn't a power shot.
00:15:46No.
00:15:46That was an off-ballage shot.
00:15:49Straight right hand there.
00:15:51A little in and out
00:15:52by Pendleton.
00:15:53Didn't do much.
00:15:57Oh, there's a slip.
00:15:59He didn't count it.
00:16:00It was a punch
00:16:00and hit the scene.
00:16:02You know, that couldn't
00:16:03be counted.
00:16:04I don't think he hit the ground.
00:16:05Well, something made that noise.
00:16:07We'll see on the replay
00:16:09if it's something made of noise.
00:16:10Oh, come on, guys.
00:16:15Hold on, roughed up inside, man.
00:16:16Let's go.
00:16:17Let me clean around.
00:16:23Let me pull the hat.
00:16:23Get the hang of the hat.
00:16:24The official at the bell
00:16:26started to count.
00:16:28Joe Cortez did not
00:16:30follow alone.
00:16:31Page stalking Pendleton,
00:16:38measuring him out
00:16:39with that left jab.
00:16:42Wild swing and a miss
00:16:43on the counterpunch
00:16:44tried by Page.
00:16:45Page meant to do some damage
00:16:46with that left hook.
00:16:48Here's a left hook
00:16:49by Pendleton.
00:16:50Hard, hard, hard hook
00:16:51by Pendleton.
00:16:51But he meant to put
00:16:53some pepper on that one.
00:16:55But a grazing blow.
00:16:58Page looks very strong.
00:17:00Well-defined.
00:17:01Hold it.
00:17:02Hold it.
00:17:02Let me pull it out.
00:17:03Hit it.
00:17:04You understand?
00:17:05Let's go.
00:17:14The penalty cannot allow
00:17:15Page to walk forward
00:17:16like this at will.
00:17:17He can't win the fight
00:17:18going backwards like this
00:17:19against a guy with
00:17:20that much range
00:17:20and that much power.
00:17:21Pendleton just going
00:17:23for broke
00:17:24with that right cross
00:17:26that missed.
00:17:33This fight looks like
00:17:34a knockout waiting to
00:17:35happen.
00:17:36Yeah, I think Pendleton
00:17:37has felt the strength,
00:17:39the power of James Page.
00:17:40You look like you're
00:17:41standing under an awning
00:17:42and waiting for the whole
00:17:42thing to fall on you.
00:17:45Pendleton now keeping
00:17:46his distance.
00:17:47He started out very
00:17:48bravely, but now he's
00:17:50felt the power.
00:17:51Yeah, he's fighting
00:17:51jittery now, you know,
00:17:52like running, running,
00:17:53jittery kind of
00:17:54please don't hit me.
00:18:02Trying to cover up there
00:18:03is Pendleton.
00:18:04Final seconds of round two.
00:18:06Come on, come on, come on.
00:18:17Listen to me.
00:18:18Keep boxing like you're
00:18:19doing.
00:18:20Keep turning his feet now.
00:18:21You've got to set him up
00:18:22with something, Freddie.
00:18:23A little more combinations.
00:18:24When you listen to me,
00:18:25you've got to keep your right
00:18:26hand up high around your face
00:18:28all the time.
00:18:28Work up the jab a little
00:18:30and with.
00:18:30But you see him getting set,
00:18:31Freddie.
00:18:32Here we're going to see what
00:18:33looked like almost a knockdown.
00:18:34Freddie Pendleton's going to
00:18:35move to move around this way.
00:18:36And as he's coming in,
00:18:37he bends his knee,
00:18:39literally almost touches.
00:18:40You'll see the canvas right
00:18:41here.
00:18:42He bends down.
00:18:43I don't know if he slips
00:18:45or whatnot, but you're going
00:18:46to see just how close his knee
00:18:47comes.
00:18:48Well, there's a punch.
00:18:49Watch.
00:18:49There you go.
00:18:49It doesn't really hit.
00:18:51Oh, Bobby.
00:18:52It hit.
00:18:52It hit.
00:18:53It hit and it made a noise.
00:18:54It went like this.
00:18:55You heard the bump.
00:18:56I didn't hear the noise.
00:18:58You see, there was a punch,
00:18:59a bump.
00:19:00That's a knockdown.
00:19:01That should have been a knockdown.
00:19:02If you get hit and your knee
00:19:03touches the canvas,
00:19:04it's a knockdown.
00:19:05I think that's a good non-call.
00:19:07I'm sorry.
00:19:08I think it's a good non-call.
00:19:10Bobby the boxer.
00:19:12Okay.
00:19:13Round three.
00:19:16Pendleton nearly went down
00:19:17twice in that second round.
00:19:20Yeah.
00:19:20It's all I can never hear
00:19:21because this guy's just waiting
00:19:23to knock him out.
00:19:23I mean, at some point,
00:19:25they're going to say,
00:19:25all right, go back to the power.
00:19:28But Pendleton's still bouncing
00:19:29and moving around.
00:19:30See, one of the things here, too,
00:19:31is that Pendleton is not making
00:19:33the champion use any energy chasing.
00:19:37Not really.
00:19:37So as Page comes in,
00:19:39he can do what he wants
00:19:39when he wants.
00:19:40He can unload those bombs
00:19:41and bang at will.
00:19:43Pendleton's not making him work.
00:19:47Pendleton with a jab.
00:19:48Loads up with the right
00:19:49and it scores.
00:19:51Page held on with both hands.
00:19:53That's the champion holding on there.
00:19:55Big right hand by Pendleton.
00:19:57It did score
00:19:57and it did stun the champion.
00:19:59He held on.
00:20:00Right on the nose
00:20:01and a powerful right hook there
00:20:02on the chest by Pendleton.
00:20:04I think that Page
00:20:05got a little bit hurt.
00:20:07Page's in a little bit of trouble.
00:20:08That right hand hurt him.
00:20:09The top of the head by...
00:20:11The champion is holding on
00:20:13with both hands
00:20:13as hard as he can.
00:20:15The champion right now is hurt.
00:20:16Yeah, he's hurting on.
00:20:17He's holding on
00:20:19because he's hurt.
00:20:20I mean, that's a locked grip
00:20:21when you get hurt.
00:20:22Look in his eyes.
00:20:22His eyes are a little glassy.
00:20:24He is not okay right now, gentlemen.
00:20:26And the blinking continues
00:20:27by James Page.
00:20:29Oh, wow.
00:20:31Oh, Pendleton seems to think,
00:20:32well, I can throw anything
00:20:34I want to here.
00:20:34This guy's hurt.
00:20:36Big turnaround here
00:20:37in round three
00:20:38for the challenger,
00:20:39Freddie Pendleton.
00:20:39He should go up top.
00:20:40He should go up top
00:20:41with that right hand.
00:20:44He's found some vulnerability.
00:20:46Don't wait for him to recover.
00:20:47And there's no quit in Page.
00:20:49Page is a gutsy kid
00:20:50who wants to fight
00:20:50and he will come back
00:20:51from adversity.
00:20:52We saw that in Lopez fight.
00:20:53Lopez hurt him.
00:20:54He'll get up and hurt you.
00:20:55Page showing amazing
00:20:57heart and will in that fight.
00:20:59Come on.
00:20:59I don't want you
00:21:00holding in sight, guys.
00:21:01So this isn't about
00:21:02to thwart him.
00:21:06Pendleton looking
00:21:07a lot more confident
00:21:08now all of a sudden
00:21:09and understandably so.
00:21:13He blocked most of that action
00:21:15did Pendleton.
00:21:15but those punches
00:21:17are still hard.
00:21:18They get through the glove.
00:21:19There's a straight right hand
00:21:20off a combination
00:21:21by James Page.
00:21:23A little bit of blood.
00:21:24Pendleton is covering nice.
00:21:26He's using some good defense.
00:21:29But Page is back.
00:21:31His head seems
00:21:32to be totally clear now.
00:21:33Yeah, he took a little breather,
00:21:34but he's back.
00:21:35And he blocked that
00:21:36straight right hand
00:21:36by Pendleton.
00:21:38That went off the side
00:21:38of the head.
00:21:39Bring out, bring out, bring out, bring him.
00:21:45Well, Pendleton's just loading up
00:21:47with that right.
00:21:48He's got to be careful
00:21:49for a counterpunch by Page.
00:21:54But he's smart.
00:21:55After he threw the punch,
00:21:56he hugged Page.
00:21:57He didn't give him any room.
00:21:59This is his best round so far.
00:22:01No question about that.
00:22:02No question about that.
00:22:03And now he's taunting Page,
00:22:06which could be a mistake.
00:22:06Come on, baby.
00:22:16Move to your right, okay?
00:22:18Move to your right
00:22:18away from his right hand.
00:22:20Okay, move to your right, okay?
00:22:22Not his right, your right, baby.
00:22:24That's all we need to do.
00:22:24Work the jab on.
00:22:26How you feeling?
00:22:26You getting loose yet?
00:22:28Come on.
00:22:29You better get loose, baby.
00:22:30You're too tight, JP.
00:22:31Stay nice and relax, baby.
00:22:36Beautiful right hand.
00:22:41I'll tell you.
00:22:43The problem that Page has
00:22:45is he's just so focused on offense,
00:22:47he doesn't look for defense.
00:22:49And that right hand comes around.
00:22:49Now, watch.
00:22:50See how he's holding on?
00:22:51That is a man holding on
00:22:52because he's hurt.
00:22:53That's right.
00:22:54You grip like that.
00:22:55That's a lock.
00:22:57That's like a love life lock.
00:23:01Let me breathe.
00:23:02Had him in a voice.
00:23:03Pendleton taunted Page
00:23:04at the end of round three,
00:23:05which should...
00:23:06might not be the wisest of strategies.
00:23:10All right, he's added a little spice to the fight.
00:23:12I mean, he did get Page in trouble.
00:23:17Fearless continues.
00:23:20That's why they call him Fearless.
00:23:24Round four.
00:23:28That took right to the head by James Cove.
00:23:31Pendleton says he didn't hurt him.
00:23:33He didn't hit him hard with anything.
00:23:34He kind of went off the gloves
00:23:36on top of his head,
00:23:37but he ricocheted off.
00:23:41Oh.
00:23:41Wild swing and a miss by Page.
00:23:43Good depth on the both by Pendleton.
00:23:44I think Page is reverting to the killer.
00:23:47Page is reverting to that left hook.
00:23:49Forget about all the boxing left hand.
00:23:51Let's just get this guy out of here.
00:23:52How many times have we seen that happen with fighters?
00:23:56They revert.
00:23:57As well, they should.
00:23:58You know, I mean,
00:23:59all that theory is nice in the gym,
00:24:01but if it ain't working for you
00:24:01and you've been winning this other way,
00:24:03go to it.
00:24:04Now, he's really blinking, Page.
00:24:05Looks like something in his eye.
00:24:06Page just claimed that he got thumbed.
00:24:08Yep.
00:24:08Just turned to the referee
00:24:09and said, thumb me in my eye.
00:24:10Oh, another right man.
00:24:14Pendleton loading up with that right hand.
00:24:16Pendleton getting a little brave, too,
00:24:17now stepping to Page.
00:24:18Oh, come on, guys.
00:24:19Come here.
00:24:19Come here.
00:24:20Both of you guys.
00:24:20Come here.
00:24:21I'm going to tell you guys,
00:24:22stop the rough tactics inside.
00:24:23I don't want to hear it.
00:24:23See that, okay?
00:24:24Let's go.
00:24:25Well, Pendleton touched clubs with Page.
00:24:27Page did not reciprocate.
00:24:30Boy, Page triggered off that right hook
00:24:33like he meant to knock him.
00:24:34I missed him by about three inches,
00:24:36but, boy, he triggered it off.
00:24:38This guy's after him.
00:24:39Page keeping that left hand awfully low.
00:24:42Page out.
00:24:43Page relentless right there.
00:24:44He wants to land that hook.
00:24:47There you go.
00:24:50He's missing, though.
00:24:51Page missing with a lot of those shots.
00:24:52Pendleton's showing some good defense,
00:24:54getting out of the way.
00:24:55Because that would harm on the way.
00:24:57Yeah, Page trying too hard.
00:24:59I mean, he's long.
00:25:00And as you said, Bobby,
00:25:01he's so offensive
00:25:02that he's not thinking anything in defense.
00:25:04There's no defense there.
00:25:07Pendleton landing there
00:25:08with a shot on the temple.
00:25:10The right hand.
00:25:13And he's blocking
00:25:14most of those punches, Pendleton.
00:25:18Good defense by the challenger,
00:25:20Terry Pendleton,
00:25:2018 years in the business.
00:25:23Hold it.
00:25:23Come on.
00:25:23Let's go, man.
00:25:24Come on.
00:25:24Watch that.
00:25:25Come on.
00:25:25Watch that.
00:25:25Let's go.
00:25:26Let's go.
00:25:30Make sure you're on, guys.
00:25:31Pendleton developing a split lip.
00:25:47I think Page helped develop it for him.
00:25:49It was a development deal,
00:25:53as I said.
00:25:54On Saturday, August 7th,
00:26:08on pay-per-view,
00:26:09former heavyweight champ
00:26:10Francois Botha meets Shannon Briggs.
00:26:13We recently caught up with them,
00:26:14but here's what they had to say.
00:26:19I think my heart's my biggest asset.
00:26:22I come to fight,
00:26:23and I don't come to lay down.
00:26:25I really think that I do have a lot of skill.
00:26:27The opportunities have got to be there
00:26:29for me to prove it.
00:26:31He doesn't bring the talent I have.
00:26:32He doesn't bring the hand speed,
00:26:33the foot speed.
00:26:33I have the skills.
00:26:34I have it all to take me to the next level,
00:26:36to separate me from guys like him.
00:26:38I know that he's going to study me,
00:26:39and that he's going to be looking out
00:26:41for the right hand.
00:26:42You can't block the right hand.
00:26:43I never throw it the same way,
00:26:45and that's why it's very hard to block it.
00:26:47I don't know about his right hand.
00:26:48Don't plan on getting hit with it.
00:26:49I have the ability to outbox him.
00:26:52Will I? Who knows.
00:26:53I may feel like going out there
00:26:54and just slug him with him,
00:26:55take him out early.
00:26:56I think I have the power to do it.
00:27:00Well, the man with the golden dreadlocks,
00:27:02Shannon Briggs,
00:27:03says he's more relaxed and confident
00:27:04under new trainer Emmanuel Stewart.
00:27:06Francois Botha has probably gained more recognition
00:27:08from his two losses
00:27:09than he has from all of his victories.
00:27:12All right, round number five.
00:27:15Brisk right hook.
00:27:16Yeah, brisk right hook
00:27:17from Pendleton just opened the round.
00:27:20Brisk.
00:27:22Pendleton looking sharp the last round.
00:27:24Page, as we said at the outset,
00:27:38not in as much of a rush
00:27:40to end matters,
00:27:41to finish things off
00:27:42as he has been in the past,
00:27:43although his last two fights
00:27:44did go the distance.
00:27:48Nice jab by Page.
00:27:49But everybody expects him
00:27:50to knock people out now
00:27:51after that resounding knockout
00:27:53of Pestreo,
00:27:54and that's what he agreed on.
00:27:55I was more impressed
00:27:56with this fight with Lopez
00:27:57than the Pestreo fight.
00:27:58Good power is one thing,
00:27:59but he put everything together
00:28:00against Lopez.
00:28:01What a smart fight.
00:28:03And he had somebody fighting back.
00:28:06I mean, that was a great fight.
00:28:10Let's see if this one
00:28:11develops into a great fight.
00:28:13Those were blocked
00:28:16by the elbows of Page.
00:28:19Get up, get up.
00:28:24Pendleton living in Miami,
00:28:26originally from Philly.
00:28:28One of those tough
00:28:28Philadelphia fighters.
00:28:31Page from a tough neighborhood,
00:28:33Pittsburgh, California.
00:28:34That's a push.
00:28:37Hold on, guys.
00:28:38That is a push.
00:28:39Watch out pushing.
00:28:40Watch out pushing, okay?
00:28:41Left arm with third,
00:28:42you know what I'm saying?
00:28:43Let's go.
00:28:43Joe Cortez,
00:28:44third man of the ring.
00:28:47Much experience there.
00:28:52Freddie Pendleton says
00:28:53they're still riding him
00:28:54in Philadelphia
00:28:54for moving to Miami.
00:28:56Married a Cuban girl
00:28:57and switched from eating
00:28:57steak and onions
00:28:58to Cuban bread
00:28:59and Cuban sandwiches,
00:29:00and look how good he does.
00:29:03He's 44-23-4
00:29:06with 32 knockouts.
00:29:08Oh, what a shot from the side.
00:29:11By Page.
00:29:12Under a minute to go
00:29:14in round five.
00:29:17Oh.
00:29:19Page opening up.
00:29:22I'll tell you what,
00:29:23he didn't land any of those cleaners.
00:29:25He didn't,
00:29:26but they sure did impress.
00:29:28They're hard.
00:29:28He does throw hard.
00:29:29And he's hitting the body,
00:29:30though, Bobby.
00:29:31He's hitting the body.
00:29:32It's not stopping Pendleton.
00:29:34He still stays inside,
00:29:36throws uppercuts.
00:29:37He's leading with his right,
00:29:39which could be dangerous.
00:29:42Yeah, but he's fighting back.
00:29:44Give fearless credit.
00:29:45He's fighting back.
00:29:46Putting on a good show here.
00:29:48He's on it.
00:29:48Come on.
00:29:50And Page said,
00:29:51hey, he expected this.
00:29:52He respects Pendleton.
00:30:02As we head for the bell.
00:30:03Now you're looking like James Page.
00:30:12Now you're fighting.
00:30:14Come in my face.
00:30:15Back to the body, baby.
00:30:16Let's take a look at the
00:30:18inside the ropes here,
00:30:19what Bobby said.
00:30:21Well, that left hand
00:30:22is certainly the key
00:30:22to success for Page.
00:30:24Here you'll see a nice left hook
00:30:25on the top of the head.
00:30:26Almost drops Pendleton.
00:30:27Another left hook.
00:30:28Big, powerful shots.
00:30:29They move him.
00:30:30He's stuck in the jab.
00:30:31Almost drops him.
00:30:32And once again there,
00:30:33he has incredible power
00:30:37in that left hand.
00:30:38Take your time.
00:30:39We got a whole minute.
00:30:39Listen, that was a great round.
00:30:41Listen to me, champ.
00:30:42Body, baby, okay?
00:30:43And step to your right.
00:30:44You've been beautiful.
00:30:45One second.
00:30:46When he wants to slug,
00:30:47you step back, okay?
00:30:49When he wants to slug,
00:30:49you step back.
00:30:50Very good round, champ.
00:30:52Okay?
00:30:53Don't be a bounce.
00:30:53It's time to feel it, all right?
00:30:55Yes, you are.
00:30:56Body.
00:30:57Body, okay?
00:30:58Don't hold up.
00:30:59McGirt.
00:31:00That's a very, very, very good fighter
00:31:02just getting right into that corner.
00:31:06Former WBC welterweight
00:31:07and IBF junior welterweight champion
00:31:09getting inside the head of James Page.
00:31:12Pendleton really living up to his nickname
00:31:14of being fearless.
00:31:15And he comes out every single round
00:31:16with that overhand right.
00:31:17I'm not sure why Page
00:31:18hasn't tried to time it yet.
00:31:19Yeah.
00:31:20You know he's gonna throw it.
00:31:23Yeah, he does seem to be holding off,
00:31:25waiting for that precious moment.
00:31:27There's that left hand again.
00:31:44He's just so hard with so much power,
00:31:46he whips it in there,
00:31:47and even when he hits him in the shoulder,
00:31:48he moves him two feet.
00:31:49There's the straight left hand by Page.
00:31:58That was hard.
00:31:59That was hard.
00:32:00Right in the mouth.
00:32:02That won't help the split lip of Pendleton.
00:32:05Pendleton, the old throw.
00:32:20Straight right hand by Pendleton.
00:32:21That scored.
00:32:21Midway through round six.
00:32:39Page, the aggressor,
00:32:40going to the body
00:32:41like he was instructed by Buddy McGirt.
00:32:43A lot of those shots are blocked,
00:32:44but they're heavy.
00:32:45Even on the arms,
00:32:46they're heavy shots.
00:32:47Gotta take the air out of you.
00:32:49He's just steadily chopping down Pendleton.
00:32:53Just chopping him down.
00:33:00Oh my God, watch the head.
00:33:01Watch the head.
00:33:01Come on, let's go.
00:33:02A very controlled attack here by James Page.
00:33:06What's he coming with that head?
00:33:07You understand?
00:33:08Let's go.
00:33:09A caution to Freddie Pendleton
00:33:10coming with the head.
00:33:11There's a straight right hand
00:33:12followed by a left of the body.
00:33:13That was a beautiful combination by Page.
00:33:15That was a terrific left underneath.
00:33:16Terrific round for the champion.
00:33:22He's putting it all together.
00:33:24He really is putting it.
00:33:25He's orchestrating a good beating here.
00:33:27Well, he is just surgically dissecting.
00:33:29Up, down, up, down.
00:33:30I mean, he's just for the body,
00:33:32for the head.
00:33:32He's just working beautifully.
00:33:35This is what Page was talking about.
00:33:37He wanted to be more of a complete fighter,
00:33:39and he's showing it here.
00:33:39He's boxing smart.
00:33:42He's not taking any chances,
00:33:43even by the McGirt a couple times
00:33:44at the corner said,
00:33:45when he's ready to just step back,
00:33:46use your jab.
00:33:52You can hear that one.
00:33:54I heard that one back in New Jersey.
00:33:58Round of about 1,300.
00:33:59I guess on hand.
00:34:00The play seats about 1,500.
00:34:03Sunset Ballroom.
00:34:04Flamingo Hilton, Las Vegas.
00:34:05All right, time.
00:34:09Jim Gray standing by
00:34:10with a guy who gave us a great thrill
00:34:12not too long ago.
00:34:14Johnny Tapia.
00:34:15Jim.
00:34:16All right, thank you very much, Steve.
00:34:17In fact, his fight against Pauly Ayala
00:34:19a few weeks ago,
00:34:19it's being called the fight of the year.
00:34:21Your first loss.
00:34:21You were 46-0.
00:34:22How difficult has it been for you?
00:34:24You know, nothing's difficult
00:34:26when you've got Jesus in your life.
00:34:28But I'd just like to thank everybody
00:34:30that stuck behind me after the loss
00:34:32because everybody loves you
00:34:34when you're a winner,
00:34:35but when you lose,
00:34:35you find out where you're at.
00:34:36You found out about a lot of people.
00:34:38Will there be a rematch?
00:34:39Would you want a rematch?
00:34:40Oh, yes, definitely.
00:34:41I'm hoping and I'm praying
00:34:42that he'd give me one as soon as I can.
00:34:43I'm ready to get back in the ring.
00:34:44But you expressed some doubt
00:34:45just before we went on
00:34:46that there will be a rematch?
00:34:48Why?
00:34:48I'm not too sure yet.
00:34:49I can't really tell you what's going on.
00:34:51My wife's working with
00:34:52also with the promoters
00:34:56and everything else.
00:34:57I'm waiting.
00:34:57All right, Johnny.
00:34:58Good to see you.
00:34:59We'll be forward to your next fight.
00:35:00I'm quick.
00:35:00All right, Steve.
00:35:01Back to you.
00:35:01All right, Jim.
00:35:02Tremendous back and forth
00:35:04street brawl with Pauly Ayala
00:35:05who took the title away.
00:35:07But knowing Johnny Tapia,
00:35:09he'll be back in some form.
00:35:11Usually there's a boxer, I hope.
00:35:12Good.
00:35:13Round seven.
00:35:16Be careful.
00:35:16I'll stick Bobby in here.
00:35:18Pendleton's letting the rounds slip away.
00:35:19He's got to take a chance here.
00:35:21It's not just going to be about survival.
00:35:23It's got to be about
00:35:23taking a shot at getting that belt.
00:35:25Yeah, right now he is
00:35:27surviving and fighting
00:35:29a decent, honorable fight,
00:35:30but he's not winning.
00:35:30Midway, the online scorers
00:35:33have at page five.
00:35:34Pendleton wants.
00:35:35That's about right.
00:35:36I have it exactly the same.
00:35:38Exactly the same.
00:35:39Nice right hand there by Pendleton.
00:35:41Fans at home gave Pendleton round three.
00:35:43That's right.
00:35:45Our Showtime fans are pretty good.
00:35:47They're getting good.
00:35:48Pretty bright.
00:35:49They're getting good.
00:35:51Notice, too,
00:35:52when Pendleton gets one or two
00:35:53of those big right hands in,
00:35:54he doesn't follow
00:35:55with three or four more punches.
00:35:57Hayes will throw the big left hook
00:35:58and still try and come back
00:35:59with two more.
00:36:01Page has never stopped
00:36:02an opponent after round six.
00:36:04As we head into round seven here,
00:36:06he is substantially ahead.
00:36:10And boxing beautiful.
00:36:13Or as Lou Duva might say,
00:36:15you're boxing beautiful.
00:36:17Beautiful.
00:36:17There's that jab
00:36:23by Page.
00:36:27Right uppercut.
00:36:29Seen a little bit of everything,
00:36:31his entire repertoire.
00:36:34Pendleton trying to answer back
00:36:35and, again, taunting.
00:36:36I don't know what that's going to help.
00:36:39Nice couple of body shots
00:36:40by Pendleton,
00:36:41but right there,
00:36:42he has an opportunity
00:36:42to take it up top.
00:36:43Another.
00:36:44That was a borderline shot.
00:36:45Oh, that was borderline.
00:36:46I think that one's very on.
00:36:47That was on the beltline.
00:36:48Yeah, I wouldn't have said anything.
00:36:51I wouldn't have said anything about that.
00:36:53So, Cortez missed by it.
00:36:57Let him go clean.
00:36:58Let him go clean.
00:37:01Let's go.
00:37:06Oh, nice right hand.
00:37:09Ready, Pendleton.
00:37:10Unloading.
00:37:11Now what he needs to do
00:37:12is fire another one of those,
00:37:13rip the left hook up.
00:37:14Uppercut or hook rising.
00:37:16Same scenario,
00:37:18but Page is looking
00:37:19for the right hand now.
00:37:20Fire the left hand.
00:37:28There's a straight right hand
00:37:29by Page.
00:37:31Right to the face.
00:37:35Page for Jose Luis Lopez.
00:37:36He used a lead right hand
00:37:38to get Lopez's attention
00:37:40and whipped a wicked left hook in there.
00:37:43And he's done that so many times
00:37:44against orthodox fighters
00:37:46that fight a little bit from the outside.
00:37:47He's not done it tonight
00:37:48against Pendleton.
00:37:52When he does land the left hook
00:37:54like he did a moment ago,
00:37:55Pendleton makes fun of him.
00:37:57Looks like,
00:37:57was that it?
00:37:58That's your big left hook?
00:37:59That didn't do anything.
00:38:00That hurt.
00:38:01He sticks his tongue out at him.
00:38:02He talks to him,
00:38:03but it's getting him nowhere.
00:38:05He's looking around
00:38:06no matter what he's doing.
00:38:08Back him up, Freddy.
00:38:11Good flanker.
00:38:12Good ground for you.
00:38:14Take a deep breath.
00:38:15Listen to me.
00:38:17Stay in close with him now, Freddy.
00:38:18Outside, it's no good.
00:38:20You've got to stay in close.
00:38:21Cover everything up.
00:38:22Right in close.
00:38:23See what happens.
00:38:24Botch him inside, Freddy.
00:38:25Don't let him get load up
00:38:26when you hear.
00:38:27Freddy, you're able
00:38:28with three right hands.
00:38:29You know why?
00:38:29Left right.
00:38:30Dave Clark and Dwayne Simpson
00:38:36telling him to get in close.
00:38:38Stay here.
00:38:39I get what he's just doing.
00:38:40Back him up with the double jab.
00:38:41It doesn't work.
00:38:42You go back to the boxing again.
00:38:43Okay.
00:38:44We're going to take a look
00:38:44at that little blow
00:38:45and see exactly where it did land.
00:38:47Landed right where it says Page.
00:38:50That's on the belt line.
00:38:51That's actually a legal blow.
00:38:52That's actually a legal blow.
00:38:53Should not have said.
00:38:54It hits the belt line.
00:38:56That's actually a legal blow.
00:38:57Get back in your corner, too.
00:39:00Get back.
00:39:02Yes, it just gave the appearance
00:39:03of being a low blow to the referee,
00:39:05Joe Cortez.
00:39:06But as you saw in the replay,
00:39:07it was right on the belt.
00:39:09Round eight, the champ continues
00:39:11to pad his lead in his middle rounds.
00:39:14He's almost getting to the point
00:39:15of no return.
00:39:17His penalty needs almost there.
00:39:19He really needs one round here.
00:39:21Something to keep this thing alive.
00:39:23He's got it.
00:39:30Smacking right hook there
00:39:31by Terry Pentelton.
00:39:33Left side of the face of Page.
00:39:34Didn't seem to bother him much.
00:39:37That hook blocked by Page.
00:39:39Oh
00:39:56Let's see if Pendleton does get inside on page as instructed. He's not he's backing us
00:40:02He's getting caught in his trainers right getting caught in a tail into those big shots is just too much
00:40:06He doesn't have to reach out boxing from the complete outside. So why stay out there?
00:40:10To begin with get work your way inside work from the inside work up lock the shots cover tight
00:40:16With the long arm is harder to punch well on the inside for a big man
00:40:32In way round eight
00:40:37Pendleton at least trying to
00:40:40Make his way inside
00:40:42Yeah
00:40:43With 18 years of fighting Pendleton knows all the tricks and everything you can to survive it's hard to put a veteran out when he's
00:40:50When he's a slick and fearless is and pretty a little blood under the left eye of freddie Pendleton
00:40:56But not in a bad spot under the eye
00:40:58He's looking to load up the right hand you can see him you can see him almost cocking it and
00:41:08There it is
00:41:10It's it's his go-to punch
00:41:11But I think he needs to start whipping in a few left hooks and or uppercuts mixed in with the right hand
00:41:17Yeah, go to the body do something else besides just that right hand
00:41:21What that right hand is going to do is going to get him killed because he's going to time it one of these times
00:41:25There's page
00:41:30Page following him right to the rope page dominating just having his way beautiful combination to the head by page and he goes to the body
00:41:37He's hurting Pendleton look at these shots by page
00:41:41Hamilton everybody show me sticking his tongue out what he's talking about hey that didn't hurt you know
00:41:45Page's face really getting Pendleton's face really getting bloodied now
00:41:52There's a right hand out of nowhere and look at page's reaction shakes him down says you didn't hurt me
00:41:59Right off the top of his head a right hook by Pendleton what happened there was no belt
00:42:04Everybody thought there was a bell yeah confusion there's no bill it was just a 10 second marker when they banged
00:42:10And everybody thought the bell stopped the fighters both heard the story was about to both both put their hands down
00:42:15Just bumped into each other and they started heading the opposite way into the corner
00:42:27But now listen to me
00:42:29This guy you hit the guy with a jab and you staggered him
00:42:31That's an ugly welt
00:42:36Take each round at a time understand
00:42:39Get out there knock him out this round get out there take one round at a time you understand
00:42:44Now let's go
00:42:47A nice right-handed Pendleton loves to rip over the top
00:42:51Now you have page goes into a little bit of a taunting act himself
00:42:54Both fighters heard the 10 second warning at the end of round eight and stopped fighting
00:43:01Pendleton throws a nice looping right hand here
00:43:03But you know there's a lot more arm there than body behind it
00:43:06Well, they're telling him Simpson over there is telling him go for broke
00:43:09He staggered him with a jab said Simpson a man never known for understatement
00:43:15Wayne's one of the funniest men in boxing funny funny guy when he was fighting he had good night irene on the sole of his shoes
00:43:22He did he's funny i'm not going anywhere near that he did he did bobby
00:43:27He was not not a good sign when you sell the advertising space on your soul
00:43:32round nine
00:43:33He was a lot of fun
00:43:34Beautiful body shot right now but pouncing he's talking to page a lot now
00:43:39There's a pretty good right hand by Pendleton and he is going for broke
00:43:42Now he takes them down now they collide and come down together
00:43:45Come on
00:43:47Page went to hold on i think page got hurt by the right hand a little bit
00:43:50He held on a lot
00:43:52Daniel wants to go right back at page in trouble
00:43:57Page is in a little bit of trouble yeah he's not handling it too well he's not clear
00:44:02Page is not clear he looks dazed Pendleton's pouring it on
00:44:07He's got a lock on there almost two minutes in the round plenty of time
00:44:11Pendleton's taking page out of Pendleton Pendleton needs to throw uppercuts because he's
00:44:18Page is going to duck right into one the old pro freddie Pendleton
00:44:25Big round nine
00:44:27I don't know why he doesn't go after him why isn't he coming why isn't he coming well he's a little
00:44:32tired too he's been beat up for quite a while now he's 30 steps and he's been doing this 18 years you're
00:44:37right and you know it's one of those things where it's not so easy anymore
00:44:42this isn't a movie you're right it's real life still he had paid on the verge and back comes page
00:44:49oh you give him just a little opening he'll take advantage and he's landing being taunted by Pendleton
00:44:56fearless freddie look at this combination by page
00:45:00the most action-packed round of the fight
00:45:30maybe on the night big round and paid in big trouble has come back and gotten
00:45:37a very brave and fearless Pendleton cut up and that last shot really hurt Pendleton you can see him
00:45:43grimace 20 seconds left in round nine
00:45:48page able to recover after looking to be in some sort of trouble earlier on the round after a takedown
00:45:54again Pendleton loading up and i'll tell you what page didn't look as steady on the speed as he
00:46:01should but he's talking and the taunting continues both ways oh what a wild round wild round
00:46:09well he finally went around on my guard bobby because i i give that round even though
00:46:19page came back bravely and gave it put your head up here put your head over we're going to watch the
00:46:23Pendleton gets page in trouble it's an inside on the inside it gets him with a right hand
00:46:28Pendleton throws him nice keeps his hands up tight there's a nice short right hand that comes right
00:46:40there hard sneaks it right on the inside there's a hook that does well the hook misses but here this is
00:46:46where he tackles him if we continue that he almost tackles him right above us here's the right hand
00:46:51right around the right around the gloves perfect page was hurt he missed him with the hook and the
00:46:56other follow-up right but this is where page said okay now we're gonna have a little rest now
00:47:00first and ten five yard line now because he was in trouble and he was holding on he needed that time
00:47:05that was at the 30 and six second mark oh man would that be the 10th time in a row he started the round like
00:47:11that almost almost he's just about started every one like that one of the keys to victory is
00:47:16is the straight and overhand right that he has to get them through and he'd almost pulled off a
00:47:20championship in the last round he hurt the champion Pendleton digging real deep now he wants to end this
00:47:25on one punch we come off the best round of the fight round nine here we go round ten now you can
00:47:32never tell when the veteran folks you can never tell we can put it out you can get his team going
00:47:37down six times in his career but when you think about it he's what 70 71 times that's not bad
00:47:59he's talking to page yeah right after he received a jab that snapped his head all the way back
00:48:08you can see the punishment on his face he's absorbed a lot of big heavy punches
00:48:14Pendleton trying to psych page out but that won't work
00:48:19Pendleton is earning his money tonight yes he is putting on quite a display here see one of the things that
00:48:25you know not a lot of people at home might recognize that not all the fighters that fight as
00:48:29well as a de la hoya or a trinidad are as tough as a pretty penalty he has the toughness that allows
00:48:35him to absorb this to keep going some of the better fighters aren't as tough as they are good and that
00:48:40balance is a very thin line yeah he keeps saying come on let's go come on let's go you're not doing anything
00:48:46him page has lost two of his last three fights or Pendleton has lost two of his last three fights
00:48:58looking like an old warrior here hanging tough
00:49:02he's missing with that combination back comes Pendleton he misses
00:49:20Freddie Pendleton has to just pick and choose his shots now 36 years old been through over 70 fights in
00:49:25the wars that his body has gone through as a couple with all the punishment he's taken already he's not
00:49:30going to have enough to close this show out all three rounds he's got to pick his spots take a shot
00:49:37great jab
00:49:42page keeps coming forward oh he's all over Pendleton now whipping shots he wants to end it
00:49:48Pendleton says that's all you got but he's got to be hurt
00:49:53he's fearless for sure he's earned his nickname
00:49:55he is taking a whipping now what hard and courage by Pendleton
00:50:04talk about resolve
00:50:08oh that is a beaten fighter he can barely get to the corner he can barely get to that corner
00:50:13but he can probably fight
00:50:15a beaten fighter
00:50:23I think I think a deep breath are we doing everything
00:50:29to print take a deep breath right now we're doing it Freddie
00:50:30As he's done in almost every single round penalty comes up to say hello to James page with that overhand right
00:50:45He's ready for it
00:50:48Cortez in the corner Bobby saying are you okay? Do you want to keep on going?
00:50:52You know your answers to that when you ask the boxer
00:50:54The doctor in there as well
00:50:57Pendleton actually almost stopped telling page to bring it on at the end of round 10
00:51:06The championship round might have been saying listen hold on let's try to make it to the end of this
00:51:13Again Pendleton going for the home run there
00:51:19As tape links on
00:51:20They try to push Pendleton's head down Cortez to nip that in the butt
00:51:35Now the heart of the crowd's got to be with fearless here
00:51:37I mean he's done one heck of a job trying to stop a guy who's taller than he is younger than he is better than he is stronger than he is
00:51:43Now it's a slip says Joe Cortez absolutely his legs this one I mean he doesn't have much left
00:51:50He has no control of his legs there is to get him there
00:51:56There has been no official knockdown
00:51:59You know Freddie's tired you know he's been beaten on quite a bit
00:52:02Whoa he just goes into the ropes and crumbles
00:52:05That's definitely
00:52:07Jab just got stuffed
00:52:09Like a shotgun jab just stuffed him
00:52:11He almost unlocked it up
00:52:13He brings to his feet
00:52:15He's got guts but no sense
00:52:19Because this is gone
00:52:20He's just going to get damaged more now but he fights back
00:52:23He fights back
00:52:25Well here too he's got a chance
00:52:26He's made a mistake to land one
00:52:28That goes home run ball
00:52:30He does he's going to try
00:52:32God bless him he's got the guts
00:52:37It's all academic in the scoring column
00:52:39Freddie Pendleton shows tremendous will here
00:52:42Trying to end it with a knockout
00:52:44That's the only hope he's got
00:52:47Now he just got off the canvas he's the aggressor
00:52:49That tells you the kind of heart this kid's got
00:52:51Page leading with his head there
00:52:55Gotta be careful
00:53:00Combination to the head by Page
00:53:02Well he just opened it up
00:53:03And the pedal
00:53:05Yeah, digs into the ribs
00:53:06Come on, let's go
00:53:07Come on, let's go
00:53:16Come on, let me on, let me on, let me on
00:53:17Oh, brother
00:53:20Down he goes
00:53:22That was a wicked left hook
00:53:23He came down on the ice
00:53:25Delayed reaction
00:53:26That's it
00:53:27He said he can't
00:53:28That was the left hook we've been talking about all night
00:53:32That's the one
00:53:33It landed flush
00:53:34And it did just what we predicted he would
00:53:36But boy, what a tough kid
00:53:37What a tough kid
00:53:38This fight mercifully is
00:53:40Mercifully
00:53:41Mercifully
00:53:42He stood in the ring and tasted the power of some punchers
00:53:44Uh
00:53:45It's just something I couldn't explain to someone at home
00:53:47What it's like to be hit by a man that really hits that well
00:53:50It's just terribly, terribly painful
00:53:52And it lasts for days
00:53:55Well, in your mind it lasts for a lifetime
00:53:57And it lasts for a lifetime
00:53:59A bloodied
00:54:00beaten
00:54:01Freddie Pendleton
00:54:02Showing tremendous heart
00:54:04And willpower
00:54:05Look at his face all cut up
00:54:07He's trying to get it to James Page
00:54:10That's James' mom
00:54:11And he embraces
00:54:12Good show sportsmanship there by Freddie Pendleton
00:54:14Freddie Pendleton
00:54:15And now James Payne
00:54:16Well, off to off this performance
00:54:18I would say
00:54:19I would certainly like to see
00:54:20Paige
00:54:21With the winner of De La Hoya
00:54:22And uh
00:54:23Uh
00:54:24Trinidad
00:54:25No matter
00:54:26I mean who it is
00:54:27Either one
00:54:28I mean
00:54:29The guy can fight
00:54:30This is good
00:54:31This is what I'm talking about
00:54:32I know
00:54:33You see me hurting
00:54:34He won't try to kill me
00:54:35You know that
00:54:36I couldn't keep
00:54:37You hit me now
00:54:38And they shot just too much
00:54:39You did great
00:54:40Don't worry
00:54:41Don't worry
00:54:42You like you and Bob
00:54:44That stuff is worth listening to
00:54:46I'm glad we laid out
00:54:47Great
00:54:48That's amazing
00:54:49To amaze me
00:54:50How too many people
00:54:51At each other
00:54:52Such a vicious nature
00:54:53To them
00:54:54And then after
00:54:55God bless each other
00:54:56Etc. Etc.
00:54:57See y'all later
00:54:58Paige is saying hello
00:55:01To the folks back home
00:55:03225
00:55:04KO round 11

00:55:06I love you
00:55:09Good fight man
00:55:10Ain't proven but I'm proud of you
00:55:13Saying hello
00:55:14To the folks back home
00:55:15225
00:55:16KO round 11
00:55:17James Page retains his title
00:55:19I love you
00:55:20Good fight man
00:55:22Ain't proven but I'm proud of you
00:55:25Pretty soon you'll know how to dance
00:55:27Here you're gonna see a nice shot
00:55:29That's kind of setting things up
00:55:31He stuffs that jab
00:55:32I mean he just stuffs it
00:55:33And this is
00:55:34This is where we can see
00:55:35That the punches were catching up
00:55:36The cumulative effect
00:55:37Is catching up to Freddie Pendleton
00:55:38He goes down to take a much harder blows earlier
00:55:40And not gone down
00:55:41And this is the end of the round
00:55:42Watch this left hook
00:55:43It's it just it's a whipping shot
00:55:47Right there
00:55:48And it just
00:55:49It hit him in part of his eye's jaw
00:55:51And it just hurt so much
00:55:53And you heard Freddie Pendleton say
00:55:54You know what?
00:55:55That was just too much
00:55:56I had had enough
00:55:57And here we'll take another look at it
00:55:59It's just a great shot
00:56:00And inside
00:56:01The right uppercut
00:56:03Just
00:56:04Hard puncher
00:56:05Just a hard puncher
00:56:06Just a hard puncher
00:56:07I tell you one thing
00:56:08That right uppercut
00:56:09Was not an easy punch
00:56:10That was not a kiss
00:56:11No, no
00:56:12That set up
00:56:13That might have been 50%
00:56:14Of that knockdown
00:56:15James Page with his patented trademark
00:56:17Lethal left hook
00:56:18Ends one again
00:56:19Now he does have a knockout
00:56:20After the seventh round
00:56:21That's right
00:56:22That's right
00:56:23This one happening in the 11th

00:57:01Ike Cortez out there
00:57:03Ahmed Kahyev of Russia
00:57:05The WBO champ
00:57:06In any case
00:57:07James Page still the WBA welterweight champion of the world
00:57:11We're setting out for post fight interviews
00:57:13Let's go up to the ring in Jim Gray
00:57:14Jim
00:57:15All right
00:57:16Thank you very much, Steve
00:57:17James
00:57:18A bit tougher than you had anticipated
00:57:20You had told us yesterday
00:57:21You thought this was going to be a relatively short night
00:57:23No, I didn't say that
00:57:24Just
00:57:25I made it a hard night
00:57:26Me and Buddy, we worked on in the gym
00:57:27Box, box, box
00:57:28Quit going back
00:57:29I got in the habit of trying to knock everybody out
00:57:31Because I was knocking everybody out
00:57:32You know, I banged with Lopez
00:57:34And I had to come down off that fight
00:57:35I went into the Sam Garth fight
00:57:36When I fought on the Holyfield Lewis court
00:57:38I went into that fight trying to take him out
00:57:39So we went back to the gym
00:57:40Worked on my footwork
00:57:41And just boxing
00:57:42Using the jab
00:57:43And sometimes I went back to my old ways
00:57:45But me and Buddy just
00:57:47He gave me back to the corner
00:57:48Why are you banging with him?
00:57:49Why don't you go back to boxing?
00:57:50He just kept drilling that, drilling that
00:57:52And drilling that in me into boxing
00:57:53And it paid off
00:57:54You know, it worked great
00:57:55Let me ask you about the ninth round
00:57:57You were rocked
00:57:58It seemed as though you were out on your feet
00:58:00And you did a heck of a job
00:58:01Really grabbing him and holding him on
00:58:03Were you out?
00:58:04You looked like you were dazed
00:58:05I was dazed
00:58:06I was dazed
00:58:07But see, that's my ego
00:58:08You know, I came out
00:58:09I know I could take a good punch
00:58:10And you know, like I said
00:58:11I went back to my old ways
00:58:13Banging, you know
00:58:14And he came out
00:58:15I wanted to bang
00:58:16And he caught me right
00:58:17They had me a little dazed
00:58:18But you know, I bounced back
00:58:19And I went back
00:58:20And I said, hey, this guy can hit
00:58:21It seems as though
00:58:22You were susceptible tonight
00:58:23To the right hand
00:58:24Is that something you feel
00:58:25You're going to have to improve on?
00:58:26Yeah, I have to work on
00:58:27I have to work on
00:58:28Just stay, you know
00:58:29I got to work on the right hand
00:58:30Getting hit by the right hand
00:58:31We got to go back to the gym
00:58:32And work on it
00:58:33Alright, let's bring in Freddie
00:58:34Freddie, congratulations
00:58:35You fought a very gallant fight tonight
00:58:37Oh, man
00:58:38The deal is though
00:58:39In the ninth round
00:58:40You had an opportunity to take him out
00:58:41And he kind of grabbed it
00:58:42And held on
00:58:43A couple times
00:58:44The ninth round
00:58:45He did what he was supposed to do
00:58:46He wanted to retain his title
00:58:47He knew if he let me get off
00:58:49I was going to take him out
00:58:50And he did a great
00:58:52He did a great job surviving
00:58:53And then, you know
00:58:54He just kept hitting me in that eye
00:58:56And I couldn't keep up
00:58:57Is that what happened there
00:58:58At the very end
00:58:59What did you say to him
00:59:00That he just couldn't take it
00:59:01Anymore in that eye?
00:59:02Yeah, I mean
00:59:03Hit me right now
00:59:04And it was really hurting
00:59:05I didn't want to, you know
00:59:07You know
00:59:08Get any more punishment to the eye
00:59:10And, I mean
00:59:11He's a very strong
00:59:12Welterweight
00:59:13I mean, he's one of the strongest
00:59:14Welterweights I've been in there with
00:59:15And, I mean
00:59:17Quite a compliment
00:59:18You fought an awful lot of people
00:59:19Unfortunately, he's much stronger
00:59:20Than Trinidad
00:59:21And, I mean
00:59:22Much stronger than Trinidad
00:59:24Congratulations on a great fight, Freddie
00:59:26Thank you, thank you
00:59:27I appreciate it
00:59:28I'm here on Showtime

00:59:30I'm going to let them see what it is
00:59:31I'm really in the junior welterweight
00:59:33And I want all them cowards to know
00:59:34I'm coming back down to my division

00:59:41Yeah, pretty good praise
00:59:42Thanks, Jim
00:59:43Pretty good praise from Freddie Pendleton
00:59:45Saying he's got more power
00:59:46Page does than Felix Trinidad
00:59:48Let's check the online scoring
00:59:49Here's how the fans had it
00:59:51In accordance pretty much with
00:59:53The folks here ringside

01:00:10Let's go back up to Jim Gray
01:00:12Jim
01:00:13All right, thank you very much
01:00:14Couple of very entertaining fights tonight
01:00:15Don
01:00:16What about James Page?
01:00:17Would you like to see him fight the winner
01:00:18Of De La Hoya and Trinidad?
01:00:20Well, first of all
01:00:21I want to thank Arthur Goldberg
01:00:22Arthur Goldberg
01:00:23And Park Place Entertainment
01:00:24For giving me the opportunity
01:00:25To see
01:00:26To be the first
01:00:27To see the flight
01:00:28Of the flamingos
01:00:29Okay, now to the question
01:00:30Yeah, the flight of flamingos
01:00:31I'm very happy now
01:00:32So first time since
01:00:33Buzzing Seagull opened up this place
01:00:34We got an opportunity to bring
01:00:36Showtime in here
01:00:37With the first boxing event
01:00:38In the history of this place
01:00:39So I'm very excited about that
01:00:41Thank you, Arthur Goldberg
01:00:42Why don't you get all this out of the way?
01:00:43Thank you, everybody else
01:00:44And then we'll get to the questions
01:00:45Anybody else?
01:00:46No, I think that
01:00:47How about
01:00:48De La Hoya and Trinidad?
01:00:50De La Hoya and Trinidad
01:00:51That's gonna be great for
01:00:52Showtime
01:00:53Well, first of all
01:00:54Let's knock out De La Hoya
01:00:56With Trinidad
01:00:57Then we come back
01:00:58With Showtime
01:00:59And we'll be able to deal
01:01:00Paige
01:01:01And De La Hoya
01:01:02If he wants to fight again
01:01:03I guarantee you
01:01:05Trinidad will knock out
01:01:07Oscar De La Hoya
01:01:08And then we will be with
01:01:10Showtime
01:01:11All right, Don
01:01:12Let's talk about
01:01:13The rematch
01:01:14Against
01:01:15Oh, Jim
01:01:16I'm so excited
01:01:17And Evander Holyfield
01:01:18Is that fight now set?
01:01:20What time is it?
01:01:21Showtime
01:01:22Showtime
01:01:23No, no, no
01:01:24Is the fight set between
01:01:25Lewis and Holyfield?
01:01:26You're not on your game tonight
01:01:27Oh, I know what you're saying, Jimmy
01:01:28You know, it's done
01:01:29When Holyfield knocks out
01:01:31Lennox Lewis
01:01:32But the fight is set
01:01:33Yes
01:01:34Date what?
01:01:35November 13th?
01:01:36November 13th
01:01:37And Holyfield would knock out
01:01:38Lennox Lewis
01:01:39All done
01:01:40All the T's and I's dotted
01:01:41Well, it ain't actually signed yet
01:01:43But we've agreed to everything
01:01:44It's done
01:01:45The deal is done
01:01:46All we gotta do now
01:01:47Is for Holyfield to be the real deal
01:01:48To rectify
01:01:50You know
01:01:51That mistake on March 13th
01:01:53When everybody said
01:01:54We did this, that, or the other
01:01:56When I had to rematch whether or not
01:01:58It was a call or draw or not
01:02:01But I took all that heat
01:02:02I baked in that grease
01:02:03Holyfield owes me one
01:02:05Take me out the grease, Holyfield
01:02:07The real deal
01:02:08And we gonna stand proud
01:02:10And supreme
01:02:11When you knock out Lennox Lewis
01:02:13On November 13th
01:02:14At the Thomas and Mac Arena
01:02:16Here in Las Vegas
01:02:17Don, we've missed you
01:02:18Nice to see you again
01:02:19Oh, man, I'm great
01:02:20You know what I mean?
01:02:21Enjoy the evening
01:02:22Here in Las Vegas
01:02:23It's gonna be a great evening
01:02:24And I'm just happy
01:02:25For all of my Showtime family
01:02:27You didn't let me talk about
01:02:29Mark and Jay and Roy
01:02:30They know they did
01:02:32Okay, I think
01:02:34You just never know how to
01:02:38Reply after Don King sometimes
01:02:40Just let him go
01:02:41Let him go
01:02:42The rocket went off at Cape Canaveral
01:02:43And King goes off here
01:02:45I mean, what else?
01:02:46Well, what do you think?
01:02:47Final thoughts, James Page
01:02:49After this fight tonight
01:02:50With De La Hoya, Trinidad coming up
01:02:52How does that all figure in your head?
01:02:54I think it's just the best of boxing is coming up
01:02:57The best is fighting the best
01:02:58With this kid waiting in the wings to fight
01:03:00I think also, Trinidad
01:03:03Everything I know
01:03:04I think he will beat De La Hoya
01:03:06I pick him by knockout
01:03:07Maybe not
01:03:08But I think it would be wonderful for boxing
01:03:12And wonderful for the audience
01:03:14This next nine months of boxing should be just terrific
01:03:18For the sport of boxing and for you, the fans
01:03:20Well, as we turn back to Bobby Ches
01:03:23I know a lot of people feel that Trinidad is more focused
01:03:25I think in fact, Pendleton told us
01:03:27He says Trinidad is going to win
01:03:28Because he's more focused
01:03:29He's a better finisher
01:03:31And he's just a more complete fighter
01:03:35He thinks in Oscar De La Hoya
01:03:37What do you think is going to happen to that?
01:03:38I completely agree with Freddie Pendleton's assessment
01:03:40I think Trinidad is the better of the two
01:03:42He's more complete
01:03:43I think he's more durable
01:03:44Which is a big key
01:03:45Because I think both of the guys go down
01:03:46But I think when Oscar De La Hoya gets up
01:03:48He doesn't get up quite as clear-headed
01:03:49Trinidad gets up and then becomes twice as dangerous
01:03:52I think there's a lot to be settled in that fight
01:03:54And I think Trinidad makes his stamp
01:03:56Puts a stamp on that fight and makes the statement
01:03:58Well, maybe someday we will see
01:04:00Page versus either Trinidad or De La Hoya
01:04:02Time will tell
01:04:03Let's take a look at the highlights of the action in tonight
01:04:06First our co-feature
01:04:07Millett versus McClendon
01:04:08IBF Junior Welderweight Championship
01:04:10And Bernie will let you take this one off the
01:04:12Well, the first round was notable
01:04:14Because the shoe was the
01:04:16For want of a shoe
01:04:17The round almost didn't go on
01:04:19And it stopped for two minutes while they wound it up
01:04:21And by the sixth round you can see that McClendon was
01:04:24Was just not in the same shape as
01:04:27And style as the champion
01:04:29Then here he just puts him away
01:04:31And the referee has to stop the fight
01:04:33Because of the punishment McClendon is suffering
01:04:36Well stopped and he loses on ATK
01:04:40Great backflip to finish it off
01:04:41Judges had it one-sided
01:04:43109-99, 107-102, 109-100
01:04:46Main event, Bobby
01:04:47Well, Page's left hand
01:04:48Everybody knew it was a key in the first round
01:04:50He almost dropped Pendleton
01:04:51He's stuck with the jab all night long
01:04:53Pendleton does come back though
01:04:54He lands some of those big right hands
01:04:56He hurts Page more than once
01:04:58To make Page hold on for dear life
01:05:00And the problem here was
01:05:02The power was just so significant for Page
01:05:04The power, the youth
01:05:05The massive amount of punches
01:05:07It was just too much
01:05:08And Freddie Pendleton
01:05:09Finally succumbed
01:05:10To the bigger, stronger man
01:05:15And let's take a look at the final recap of the results
01:05:17Our co-feature, Teron Millett
01:05:18Recording his first successful defense
01:05:20Of the IBF Junior Welterweight Championship
01:05:22Perhaps it's time to try and avenge his only loss
01:05:25And again fight
01:05:26Shambay Mitchell
01:05:27And at our main event
01:05:28James Page made his third successful defense
01:05:30Of the title
01:05:31Page says
01:05:32Look out, Felix and Oscar
01:05:33I'm ready for the win
01:05:36Once again, more world championship action
