00:01:57which was launched right here at this venue the flamingo hilton built over 52 years ago

00:02:03by the legendary bugsy siegel bugsy may have envisioned a las vegas filled with hotels and

00:02:08casinos but it's a safe bet even he might be a bit overwhelmed how it all turned out just ahead a

00:02:15world championship doubleheader our main event will spotlight one of boxing's biggest punchers

00:02:19james page makes his third defense of the wba welterweight title against former world champion

00:02:25freddie pendleton but first in our co-feature you'll see teron malette defend his ibf junior

00:02:31welterweight crown for the first time as he faces veteran southpaw and number one contender

00:02:36virgil mcclendon as we make our way inside of the hotel's sunset ballroom a room that normally hosts

00:02:43some of the biggest names in the world of entertainment but surprisingly this represents

00:02:49the debut of boxing here at the flamingo hilton as the fans settle in for world championship

00:02:54hello again everybody i'm steve albert tonight the magic number is 147 as the welterweights take

00:03:02center stage in our main event in a division that stars such great champions as oscar de la jolla and

00:03:07felix trinidad james the mighty quinn page is arguably the hardest-hitting welterweight in the

00:03:12world today he's also one of the best-kept secrets in boxing today outside boxing circles inside he's

00:03:19considered a rising star now ever since his stirring one punch knockout of andrei pestriev to win the

00:03:24title his stock has gone up october of 98 paris france page drilling pestriev with a solid left hook

00:03:30setting the russian crumbling to the canvas in a heap pestriev's corner didn't even allow the

00:03:35referee to finish the count before they were in the ring tending to their fighter with that victory

00:03:41page demonstrated why he's quickly becoming one of the welterweight division's most feared punchers and yet

00:03:46his last two fights did go the distance tonight he'll face former ibf lightweight champ fearless

00:03:52freddie pendleton an old pro who's been in there with the best including trinidad and pernell winner

00:03:57with that let me bring on my ringside partners first the fight doctor freddie pacheco and freddie

00:04:02freddie pendleton 18 years in the business he's 36 years old are his best days behind him or is he

00:04:08ready to pounce on another title well that's kind of what we're going to find out i feel pages like on

00:04:13the top of the wave going up and pendleton's going down on the way when that happens with a puncher

00:04:18like page very very very little that we can say and hopefully for pendleton page looks like he's in

00:04:25easy all right we turn to our other partner here bobby chez when you think about the welterweight

00:04:30division names like oscar de la joy and felix trinidad come to mind how does page fit into this

00:04:35equation well steve i'll tell you what james page can fit in this equation almost anywhere he wants to in

00:04:39the division he's a top-notch fighter he has good boxing skills great height and range but he has

00:04:44explosive crushing one punch knockout power that makes him ever so dangerous he's very hungry he's

00:04:49disciplined well conditioned and he wants to achieve it's a dangerous combination on any given day it's

00:04:54not inconceivable that he could that he could beat the very best in the division well james looking to

00:04:59turn a page and in terms of style going from slugger to boxer under new trainer james buddy mcgert for

00:05:04more on that and tonight's main event we check in with our jim gray who is with both jim all right

00:05:14for you to change from being a slugger to a boxer no not at all you know that's what we've been working

00:05:19on in the gym is uh not to try to hurt everybody with one punch you know uh just to set it up you

00:05:24know i'm a natural puncher just use a jab and box that's what everybody's going to see tonight you know

00:05:28the knockout comes it comes i'm going out the box and i just fight a good fight why did you make the

00:05:33change you were so so successful with willy rush by the change well that's the way that i always

00:05:38fought is i used to box it was just that you know i just i just got into a slugging mode you know and

00:05:43i won the title i knocked past you off i was one shot and i've just been the slugger mode ever since

00:05:47and it's like the last fight when i fought on the holyford lewis court i had to come back down you

00:05:51know i was i was like i was on a high from the lopez fight had to bring myself back down buddy real

00:07:09squaring off with virgil mcclendon for the ibf junior welterweight championship millette told us he does

00:07:14not expect this to be a long fight mcclendon very focused determined says he's been thinking of this

00:07:20moment since he was eight years old the chance to become a world champion southpaw virgil mcclendon

00:07:27an up and down career which began in 1989 inactive 91 through 93 incarcerated for felonious assault more

00:07:36recently hasn't fought in some 14 months saying he just couldn't get a fight this his first shot at any

00:07:43title he's never fought a top 10 contender yet he is ranked number one by the wbo he did have an

00:07:50extensive amateur career his reported record 269 wins and 33 losses only one knockout in his first

00:07:58eleven pro fight seven ko's in his last eleven so 30 virgil mcclendon almost a tale of two careers

00:08:06who has picked up power late in his career and that's what we got to look at what did he do lately and

00:08:12what he's done lately is he's got power now that gives him a little chance here i think the very very

00:08:17evenly met contest but millet a little bit more of an edge but it's going to be a very nice fight

00:08:24and we'll see just how much of a factor his southpaw style is against teron millet as well

00:08:31and we look at the champion there he is teron millet talk about overcoming adversity olympic hopes dashed

00:08:41in 92 a carjacking victim shot in the stomach he was a gold medal favorite remarkably made it to the

00:08:47olympic trials but fell short against current champ shambay mitchell in 95 a southpaw a fight

00:08:54he took on very short notice he decked mitchell 20 seconds in but was stopped later in round one

00:08:59he feels his life has gotten worse since winning the title getting no recognition being constantly

00:09:06harassed by the police in his hometown of st louis saying it's because he is a black male driving a

00:09:13nice car mommy through it all he maintains a keen sense of humor he's charismatic likable good boxer

00:09:20strong the easy win over vince phillips for the belt the thing though that really stands out for

00:09:26him is his hand speed do you think you know not only his hand speed is a deceptive steve but he's

00:09:30also very busy he likes to jump on his fighters and opponents right away like to get right to the action

00:09:35he also can land extremely effectively from the most awkward of angles with power that makes him extra

00:09:39dangerous speed power bunches and bunches this man will be a force to be reckoned with in the division

00:09:46so millet versus mcclendon coming up let's size him up as we check out the tail of the tape

00:09:50both in the 30-something category millet three years younger one and a half inch height advantage

00:09:55for the champion both under the weight limit and a two inch reach advantage for mcclendon

00:12:17and his opponent across the ring on my left is the defending world champion fighting out of the red

00:12:23corner wearing black trunks with white trim fighting out of st louis missouri he weighed in at already 139

00:12:32pounds his record includes 21 wins one loss one draw with 16 wins coming by way of knockout tonight in the

00:12:40first defense of his title please welcome to defending ibf junior welterweight champion of the world

00:13:43he has 11 first round knockouts 15 of his 16 ko's in three rounds or less so he gets right to it

00:13:50virgil mcclennon is only the third southpaw millet has faced the first a bad experience as

00:13:55mentioned shambay mitchell a first round tko has only lost the other jose luis reynoso a tko round three

00:14:01here we go round one scheduled for 12 for the ibf junior welterweight championship mcclendon a southpaw

00:14:09okay both wearing black trunks on the right of your screen in the past mcclendon known to clown around

00:14:15but he says he he doesn't do that as much anymore he gets right down to the business he does like to

00:14:20put on a show but he's very serious about the sport they're getting right to it oh boy some bombs coming

00:14:25out bombs right now you can see that right now mcclendon not the puncher of the two but he's not going to

00:14:30back off he's going to get his bound to play he's going to make the champion respect him oh look at

00:14:34you came off his shoe came off the sole of the right shoe of virgil mcclendon has been dislodged

00:14:42now ferdy you've just you've seen just about everything in the sport have you ever seen this

00:14:46now that's the first one that's the first one i've never seen all i can think of is they could put tape

00:14:50on or just rip it off and let them just fight on the on the um the regular leather part bobby you have

00:14:56any old shoes he can borrow yeah but they're probably too big he's a little smaller in there

00:15:00well i need duct tape i mean they need some guy that medical taping gonna hold up they're gonna

00:15:04have to make a little they're gonna do around the ankle they're gonna have to do a little bit of

00:15:07cross weaving here wow and that could be dangerous could be slippery as the cut man jeff germogia buys

00:15:13the tape that's a very good point because it is going to be slippery and that could be it will be

00:15:18i mean there isn't any kind of tape you can put on there that's not going to slip on what do you think

00:15:21bob bob has has this ever happened to you and if if not do you you think that could be a problem

00:15:29you know if he tapes this properly the tape will wear in reasonably well i've seen shoes taped in

00:15:34gyms but never in a fight no no not and not on a smooth canvas like that boy that that's this is

00:15:39really really bad for him i mean they should put duct tape he's got to lift that shoe he's got to do it

00:15:45good because we have to take time off to fix them unusual stuff give us another problem but he's got to

00:15:51take the whole shoe a big one all right let's see how it happened well i don't think you're going

00:15:58to see how it happened because that's a defect in the shoe not a punch i've never seen much take

00:16:02the sole of a shoe off i mean there it is it just came it just flapped out yeah it's just a defect

00:16:07in the shoe that's all i mean most fighters put brand new shoes on every time some people use the

00:16:12same old shoes but uh i've never seen a defect like this never let's go over to jim gray jim all right

00:16:19steve well the problem is is there's no spare pair of shoes here it's the only pair that he has they've

00:16:24run back to see if some of the other fighters wear the same size of course uh that won't match his

00:16:29attire and his uniform and he does of course have a shoe deal they're going to try and tape it the

00:16:33problem is is they really can't spat this like they can a football player because he needs the heel and

00:16:38they can't get to the necessary part of the heel so it could in essence really affect some of his

00:16:42mobility because you don't want your ankles taped like a basketball player or a football player but for right

00:16:47now this is all they've got and this is what they're going to do steve this looks like a remake

00:16:51of the mummy right now is his right shoe is uh taped up to compound things too he is the mover of

00:16:58the two he is the one that needs the footwork exactly you need mobility and this robs you as

00:17:03gray just said robs you the mobility you got a stiff thing there it's like a football player getting

00:17:08the way he's doing it and that just boy that's a terrific disadvantage for this poor guy well it's been

00:17:13a delay of about two and a half minutes now since the right soul of virgin mcclendon shoe came undone

00:17:22it's been taped up he's not fashionably correct but okay you gotta listen my command we must continue

00:17:28here in round one here we go well they're both throwing bombs at the very beginning i mean

00:17:35you know the way things are going perhaps it won't even be a factor

00:17:37there on said he didn't he didn't want to start too fast but he sure has he started like he's looking

00:17:42for an early early knockout this young inside virgin mcclendon is going to tie the lead up he has to

00:17:47not the stronger of the two not the bigger puncher but he's come out here to get his pound to play

00:17:52mcclendon a southpaw not a big puncher relies more on speed which may be hampered now

00:17:58because of the tape he feels malette leaves his feet a lot throws wide punches certainly that

00:18:06hasn't been the case thus far boy i mean he's punching yeah he is looking like he's putting

00:18:12on the bobby bobby the guy looks like he forget about boxing i'm just gonna punch this guy out

00:18:16i mean you know he he hasn't got the rhythm yet he's just throwing from break base camp all the way

00:18:23that was he's trying to throwing he's trying to land a kind of a under we're right he's looking for

00:18:29right hand to the body but he's looping it down as opposed to looping it over the top it's like a

00:18:34half an uppercut half a hook well the other guy ain't going for it uh virgil's trying to establish

00:18:39order wants to fight his way and he's fighting straight up and down real real classic kind of fighter

00:18:45as they tie each other up well that's it i know i don't always say this but i'm really in the best

00:18:54shape of my life as things get a little bit on the nasty side yeah he punched while he was trying

00:18:59to get uh broken and it uh bothered his eye but i had bothered uh virgil's eye

00:19:20see as soon as they get close clinton's going to tie up malette malette wants to work he's going to

00:24:21Early on, the power shots are being landed by Millett.

00:24:25especially that right hand he used that little jab as a feeler firing a straight

00:24:29ran right down the middle a beautiful punch as he pulls out and gets away from

00:24:32the counter by McClendon but McClendon comes back he ended around with the

00:24:36right uppercut and a big right hook on the ropes lands a very very clean right

00:24:41hook followed up by another right hook and yet another one he got champion a

00:24:46little bit of trouble well that's one of those things where you got the whole

00:24:50round going your way and then you almost get knocked out at the end right can

00:24:53we be on the threshold of our fourth consecutive shutout on Showtime or

00:25:00upset on Showtime you are going to tell because he looks like he's recovered

00:25:06there looks like he's recovered he's using a good jab he's offsetting that right

00:25:10hook with a straight jab just a nice simple straight jab down the pipe

00:25:14make McClendon change his strategy a little all Virgil knows is he can do it

00:25:19that he can get this guy in trouble he's got new confidence now hey I can get

00:25:23this guy McClendon's power has improved in the second half of his career

00:25:30and he got a pretty good illustration of it at the end of the last round round at number three

00:25:36straight left hand right on the neck by the challenger McClendon

00:25:46nice counter right again the jab right now is being effective also effective for the champion let he is controlling this round so far with the jab

00:25:54even though he's falling back he's controlling he's out punching and he's out jabbing

00:25:58well that much more reserved he's he's taking a little bit of a step back here

00:26:03kind of be more cautious set something up well I think you understood hey this guy

00:26:08can punch we got about it not being reckless trying to go to the body there but a nice

00:26:13block by the gloves with McClendon McClendon's very fast

00:26:18and that left hook by McClendon was dashed by my left good defense statement and he can't not only did he block it but he put in two punches afterwards

00:26:31somebody lost him out

00:26:33it looks like the challenger McClendon

00:26:39I'm not sure if Richard Steele is aware that the mouthpiece is gone because at the first break of the action and there hasn't been that

00:26:56they replace it let him go that's the rule and I don't think he's aware that the mouthpiece is on the canvas no he stepped on it a moment ago

00:27:04he has not seen the mouthpiece he stepped on it again so that that got his attention

00:27:09so he sees it now whose mouthpiece is it

00:27:12well he asked whose mouthpiece it was and it was McClendon

00:27:15he didn't even see it Steve no I think the second time he stepped on it he realized

00:27:19he stepped on something he looked down at it yeah yeah the first time it was a full step

00:27:25maybe maybe at first he thought it was one of McClendon's shoes he stepped on

00:29:56a short crisp right cross there by Millett

00:38:21challenger at his first shot at the title but the last couple of rounds have been the champions

00:38:26teron millet right now mcclennon's lack of busy is losing him the rounds consistently yeah but he started

00:38:32out this one now jabber he has started out after that little talk too he started out a little bit

00:38:36better than black still two in act not enough punches mullet's throwing two and three to one

00:38:42and even if they both land 50 percent he's going to come on yeah work inside and get out

00:38:50well let's try to get the recognition he feels he believes he should be getting as a champion there's a

00:39:02he's standing still millette is not moving at all it's like he's nailed to the canvas just waiting

00:39:07for the other guy and the other guy doesn't do it look like he don't don't like moving at all

00:39:41las vegas with the judges it takes a lot to take the title away from a champion and mcclennon's going to

00:39:47really have to step it up well there's no question he's not taking this championship not

00:39:53off this he's just not being busy enough you see he's walking around he's following the champion

00:39:58even as the champion's backing up a little right in there a little upper cut here there's another

00:40:03left hook you know even though they're not big shots he's throwing here four points combination

00:40:18was in if i was in the corner over that i'd be a little worried he looks like he's really slowing down

00:41:43are they doing the right thing to let they're massaging his legs and getting that

00:41:46that blood going everything going into his muscles you got to revive your fighter that's an art

00:41:51that's an art well here at the halfway point after some early problems with his shoes the

00:41:57challenger virgin mcclennon had the champion in trouble at the end of round two but for the most

00:42:01part to ron malek has come on in his first title defense that was a brief spasm of glory which lasted

00:42:08around 15 seconds and that was it that's what he's done in this fight he looks more determined he looks

00:42:14harder and he's punching harder how do you guys see it so far unofficially i've got uh the champion

00:42:20had 59 55. i have the same way i give a second round to mcclendon and outside that is just being

00:42:25at work they have a four to two i have a five to one i mean we're right there he's just out working

00:42:29look at a beautiful right hand and there's two jabs behind it and there's another right hand

00:42:34mcclendon throws one jab and that's it one and done for virgil mcclendon there's a combination but

00:42:42kind of slipped right off the face of teron malek virgil mcclendon is a better fighter than he's

00:42:47showing even here and he's showing that he's a good fighter very competitive at this level but

00:42:52he's even better than that he's just not letting it go he's been at work that's all i don't think

00:42:56he's ever seen a guy that works that much in front of him i mean he's much better than showing much better

00:43:02guarantee you wow he almost went down stumbled off balance virgil

00:43:08mcclendon looking like he wants to try to end this with one punch but in the past i've seen

00:43:15tapes of him he is a very good body puncher likes to go to the body but he just he just took a couple

00:43:21of shots to the head there did mcclendon once again see if it was three or four to one and two

00:43:26and if that continues the champion can't lose this title great step back keep him up

00:43:34he's just got to keep his level of energy up and keep coming

00:43:42you think the teron malet bobby that we're seeing here tonight could beat a guy like sean bay mitchell

00:43:48no i think right now he's not fighting the type of fight he would have to sean bay

00:43:51not only throws a lot of punches as does malet but he's sharper he's quicker

00:43:56a different type of south boy than we're seeing right now mcclendon's and mcclendon got

00:44:01his boxing skills together and putting the left back he started to get to him

00:44:04sean bay is that kind of fighter sean bay's too much for this guy right now too much

00:44:09and it's another year down the line year down the line might be different not now

00:44:15malet talked about that he's improved since he fought sean bay well guess what so as sean bay mitchell i've

00:44:20seen him i've watched him been a fan for years and that young man can fight pulling on back

00:44:24pulling back just keeps getting better

00:47:20winning he's not overexerting himself and mclendon doing nothing to force a mistake before the fight

00:47:27really i don't think he understands how far behind i feel he is

00:47:32the line is winging right and left and they are landing that right hook landed right on the jaw of

00:47:37mclendon but the mclendon just keeps barreling forward you got to throw something hard and

00:47:44something's got to land or else this isn't going to change i mean you're not going to go anywhere

00:47:49unless you land some hard punches

00:47:53oh well that sets up a straight right hand with some beautiful jab and that's just it if you let

00:48:08a man just keep throwing something's got to get through mclendon's got to fire make him pay right

00:48:13especially when champion misses he doesn't seem to know what a counterpunch is i mean he doesn't seem

00:48:19to know how to block and then counterpunch he just takes them all in his face the difference in skill

00:48:24level is being born out right now you know what i'm not even sure it's that steve mclendon has shown

00:48:31similar skills certainly a different style but he's just either not conditioned as well not hungry

00:48:36enough or not focused enough to do he needs to do well i would certainly say that mullet is in a better

00:48:42class skill-wise because this is the first time mclemon's ever fought anybody in the top 10. his first

00:48:48shot at any title he is ranked number one by the wbo but he hasn't fought anybody fair enough and he

00:48:53doesn't seem to know what the answer is he doesn't seem to have a clue as to how to get up sit on son

00:49:00you all right you gotta work you gotta work you got me right here but you ain't doing that guy you

00:49:06let me steal my fight you got to take him out take him out you let him get back in the fight you're way

00:49:14behind okay you give a lot of rounds you shouldn't have to get back okay because you got him out

00:49:19three round now okay right now out you gotta fight every round like it's a championship round man

00:49:25you gotta fight hard boy we gotta carry this home you let him back in the fight all right

00:49:29until you hurt him now you let him off the hook now listen listen now only thing i can tell you

00:49:35man you you better than this get him take the kicking boy get the bucket

00:49:46an angry corner virgin mcclendon and everything they said was true you let him into the you let

00:49:52him out of the fight you're not fighting you've got to get going if you want to win this fight you've

00:49:56got to take rounds you're so far behind you need everything everything they said was i haven't passed

00:50:01the point of no returning that's the problem well you know how many times we're off by a round or two

00:50:09from the judges i got the same thing bobby's got we're in we're looking at the same fight one guy's

00:50:14dominating which of course translates into the fact that mcclendon probably needs a knockout to win this

00:50:20fight and he only has eight knockouts and 21 wins although he has seven in his last 11 fights you

00:50:25could use a couple of knockdowns to really shut the gap down points wise but he really needs to do

00:50:29something and he needs to do it now round number nine

00:50:42great the next time

00:50:48around what they've done a nice job with that mouse under his left eye spoon and all yeah they have

00:50:54done a good job in his corner this should not be a difficult fight well not anything like the ayala

00:51:00tapia fight in the year that we saw uh the other week which was a toss-up either way would have been

00:51:05okay we saw tapia they saw the yama hey not this one this is not hard to go this jab right now from the

00:51:12lead is just it's just controlling the fight it's controlling the pace it's setting up everything he wants

00:51:16to do and negating everything that the challenger mcclendon wants to do yeah we probably would have been uh

00:51:21there's a good straight left hand by mcclendon and he wobbled the champion he heard him out of

00:51:25completely nowhere turns on mcclendon landed now if he doesn't attack now he's crazy he's a minute and

00:51:3218 seconds got plenty of time to put him away uh-oh he flipped over his feet didn't look that didn't look

00:51:38good he momentarily dazed the champion now he misses with a wild right hand but millette unable to come back

00:51:46with a stinging counter punch now that should be swarming him now hold back because if he's ever had

00:51:52a chance right now he wasn't he wasn't he becomes a big factor both ways too not only that you can't

00:51:57put out the energy you need but when you get hit it hurts so much more and the other thing is bobby

00:52:03he's been taking a beating uh for seven rounds as mcclendon man he's getting hit to the body and getting

00:52:08hit to the head that's got to take control you don't have all that energy when you've been beaten on like that

00:52:13no it does take it takes the starch out of you a little bit i mean come on let me go

00:52:24oh that was a heart and soul punch that's another thing that happens when uh we fighters get

00:52:29tired we will just load up with a big shot take a little hail mary prayer

00:52:34come on clinton don't hold him as we head for the bell in round nine come on work

00:52:43when the way this fight began i'm sure some surprise that it's gone this far

00:52:56he's not going to give you this come on you got to take this you got to take this fight

00:53:01dean let's get out there ain't no tomorrow man let's go out there and fight you got to take this

00:53:05because you got you're hurting every time you get some ropes and then you're letting them off the hook

00:53:40other's feet as as left as left handers do and not because the punch was so strong but still he wasn't

00:53:46around so it's the first time he's he's peeked into the wind column here in a long long long time

00:53:55now he comes out showing a little more energy maybe he's somehow ignited the look at this wide

00:54:05arms widespread what is that you know there's a few fighters that i've boxed with over the years

00:54:09they use that type of defense and they keep their hands out here and they somehow they

00:54:14they spread the feel there i don't know exactly what you would call it but they keep their hands

00:54:18out there and they look and they can pick all punches that way and you know for some guys it's easy

00:54:23i just assume keep mine close to my face well no question mcclennon is spirited now he's got some

00:54:33kind of uh zest that he didn't have before round 10 both wearing black trunks which is a mistake the

00:54:45commission should take note of that before the fight starts they should not be wearing the same color trunks

00:54:50yeah many years ago in madison's career and you couldn't come in one was black and one was white

00:54:54take your choice right right now now mclennon has black and gold trunks with a lot of red showing his

00:54:59trunks are falling off and you can't you can't mistake the two of this this tape all over one foot

00:55:06so you can't worry about that but i agree should should be two different colors
