Shane Mosley defends his IBF Lightweight Title against Demetrio Ceballos on HBO Boxing After Dark
Transcript
00:00This was The Night Shift.
00:23The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports,
00:27the network of champions.
00:30This was The Night Shift.
01:00This was The Night Shift.
01:29Tonight, Shane Mosley, perhaps the best lightweight in the world,
01:35defends his title against top-ranked Demetrio Sabalas.
01:39And then, William Guthrie puts his light heavyweight belt on the line
01:43against a former middleweight champion, Reggie Johnson.
01:47From the spectacular Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut,
01:52welcome to another edition of B.A.D. Boxing After Dark,
01:57the baddest boxing series on television.
02:00Two recently crowned champions, the very gifted Shane Mosley,
02:04and the very strong William Guthrie,
02:07will be asked serious questions by serious challengers,
02:11and we're here to get the answer.
02:14Hello, I'm Larry Merchant, filling in tonight for Jim Lampley,
02:19who is on assignment at the Winter Olympics in Japan.
02:24I feel a little like a left fielder being asked to play shortstop,
02:28but fortunately, I do have someone to back me up,
02:33Roy Jones Jr.
02:35Roy, glad to have you with us again.
02:37Last week, you left us hanging in the air
02:40on the situation of your fight with Buster Douglas.
02:43You said you would go to your parents to ask them their opinion.
02:47You have since announced that you would not go through with that fight.
02:51Tell us what happened.
02:52Well, basically, mother knows best and father knows the rest.
02:55I went to my father.
02:56My father said, don't do it.
02:57It's not worth your time.
02:58It's not worth it for you to go up there.
03:00You're not a legitimate heavyweight,
03:01and you're not fighting a heavyweight champion.
03:03So to me, I took it as he was saying,
03:06you only be a hustler after you beat up Buster Douglas.
03:08I mean, yeah, after you beat up on Buster,
03:10you want to do something real, fight Evander Holyfield.
03:12All right, so most light heavyweight champions
03:15who move up to fight a heavyweight champion
03:17go directly to the champion.
03:20You're saying that you would go directly to Evander Holyfield.
03:24Oh, most definitely, without a doubt.
03:25I mean, that's just something that is upon me
03:28from the historic days.
03:30Since old times, middleweights have been trying to go up
03:32to gain the heavyweight title,
03:34and no one has successfully done it yet.
03:36Therefore, that leaves Roy Jones Jr. in that same predicament,
03:39and if the opportunity presents itself, how can I say no?
03:42All right, now let's get to the business at hand,
03:46the first fight featuring Shane Mosley, the lightweight titleist.
03:51Shane Mosley made his debut on Vaxing After Talk last August
03:55when he defeated a very well-regarded, very strong,
03:59unbeaten lightweight champion named Philip Holliday
04:03from South Africa.
04:05At that time, I had a small fit, according to many critics,
04:09because I said that Shane Mosley's style
04:13reminded me of Sugar Ray Robinson.
04:17That time would tell whether he had the substance to go with it,
04:20but once you mention Sugar Ray Robinson,
04:24everyone came out of the woodwork to say,
04:26I knew Sugar Ray Robinson, he's no Sugar Ray Robinson.
04:30Call it a moment of irrational exuberance on my part.
04:34But nevertheless, Roy, you've been in that position
04:37of high expectations.
04:39Does Shane Mosley, from what you have seen of him,
04:42have the mentality to make that a plus,
04:45or could it weigh him down?
04:47Well, it could work both ways.
04:48I think he only has room for making it a plus now.
04:51Reason being is because he did the hardest thing to do,
04:53which was become a world champion
04:55after all these expectations are put upon you.
04:57I had the same thing bestowed upon me
04:59before I fought Bernard Hopkins.
05:01I fought the fight one-handed,
05:02but critics still said Roy isn't what we thought he was,
05:05or Roy isn't what we thought he would be.
05:06Later on, they find out that a healthy Roy
05:08has something terrible to deal with.
05:10All right, and Shane Mosley presumably will be as well.
05:13Let's take a closer look at Shane Mosley.
05:18He's been a Tyro in boxing as an amateur
05:21from way back since he was 10 years old.
05:24You see, he boxed Dr. De La Hoya when they were 12 and 13.
05:27260 amateur fights, 25 pro fights, never knocked down.
05:35Now let's take a closer look at Demetrio Ceballos.
05:40Demetrio Ceballos is celebrated as a body puncher.
05:43He was born and raised in Panama, lives in Brooklyn now.
05:48His only defeat, some believe, a hometown loss
05:51to Ivan Robinson in a decision.
05:55If you think the expectations are high on Mosley,
05:58they're even higher on Ceballos in his native Panama
06:02because that's the country that produced
06:03the great Roberto Duran as a lightweight champion,
06:06and before him, Ismael Laguna,
06:09from his hometown of Cologne,
06:10also a very good, lightweight champion.
06:17Let's not leave out Ismael Pedrosa.
06:20Let's go to the tale of the tape,
06:22and there is an important tale here tonight,
06:25and that tale is the weight of Ceballos.
06:29He weighed in at 138 at the weigh-in yesterday,
06:32took two hours off,
06:34ran for a couple of hours to get his weight down to 135.
06:38Whether that's a factor or not tonight
06:41could be an important element in this fight.
06:45Let's go to Harold Letterman for the rules.
06:48The Shane Mosley-Demetrio Ceballos fight
06:50is scheduled for 12 rounds
06:52using the new standardized rules of boxing
06:55for world championship fights.
06:56There is no standing eight count,
06:58no three-knockdown rule.
06:59Only the referee can stop the fight,
07:01and you cannot be saved by a bell at any round,
07:03including the 12th and final round.
07:06Larry.
07:06And now to ring announcer, Thomas Triber.
07:11Ladies and gentlemen,

08:03When the bell rings,
08:04the referee in charge of the action
08:05will be Eddie Cotton.
08:11Introducing to you first the challenger.
08:13Fighting out of the blue corner,
08:14he's wearing the gold trunks
08:16with purple trim
08:16and weighed in at 135 pounds.
08:19Fighting out of Brooklyn, New York
08:21by way of Colón, Panama.
08:23He has a professional record of 20 wins,
08:26just one loss
08:27with 13 wins
08:28coming by way of knockout.
08:30Ladies and gentlemen,
08:31please welcome
08:32Demetrio
08:33Pambele
08:34Sambaldos.
08:36And his opponent
08:40fighting directly
08:41across from him
08:42out of the red corner.
08:43He's wearing white trunks
08:44with blue trim
08:45and also weighed in
08:46at 135 pounds.
08:48Coming to us
08:49from Pomona, California,
08:51he is undefeated
08:52with 25 wins
08:53and 23 of them
08:55coming by way of knockout.
08:57Ladies and gentlemen,
08:57introducing
08:58the current IBF
08:59lightweight champion
09:00of the world,
09:01Sugar
09:02Shane
09:03Mosley.
09:06Shane
09:17Just a chief second.
09:27Just a chief second.
09:28All right, boxers,
09:29you received your instructions
09:30in the dressing room.
09:32Obey my commands.
09:33Let's touch gloves.
09:34Have a good, clean fight.
09:35Let's go.
09:36Roy, what is your take
09:39on the weight
09:40with Sambaldos?
09:42It can't help him,
09:43but sometimes
09:44a young, eager fighter
09:46can overcome
09:47that kind of situation.
09:51Yeah, but tonight
09:51it's going to be
09:51very difficult
09:52for him to overcome
09:53this situation
09:54because he's in
09:55with a real puncher
09:56and if he is not on point
09:57with sometimes
09:58that weight loss
09:58will cause
09:59to go over,
09:59then he's going
10:00to be in trouble.
10:08Shane Mosley's
10:09trainer and manager
10:10and father Jack
10:11calls him
10:12a power boxer.
10:15It's an apt
10:16description
10:16because he's
10:18not the kind
10:19of boxer
10:19who feels you out.
10:20He throws hard punches.
10:22He throws hard punches.
10:25Stop punching.
10:25Stop punching.
10:25Stop punching.
10:25Stop punching.
10:25Stop punching.
10:28Stop punching.
10:28Let's go.
10:30The referee said
10:31stop punching
10:31but he wasn't there
10:32to break him up
10:33and Shane Mosley
10:34got in a good right hand.
10:37An excellent right hook
10:38actually.
10:44Stop punching.
10:45Stop punching.
10:45Stop punching.
10:45Get back.
10:45They're going to be
10:46very careful
10:47with the headbutt
10:48because both guys
10:49seem to be going
10:49in head first.
10:51If they're not careful
10:51somebody's going to get
10:52a bruise from a headbutt.
10:55Philip Holliday
10:56gave Mosley
10:57some anxious moments
10:59with his aggressive style
11:00wading in on him
11:02and Sabalis
11:03is trying the same.
11:07Neither fighter
11:08is backing off.
11:13That overhand right
11:14left Sabalis
11:14a little bit
11:15off-balance.
11:17He may have been
11:17hurting a little bit.
11:23Relax.
11:24Stop punching.
11:25Come on.
11:25Let's go.
11:25Let's go.
11:26Get some heads up.
11:26The early...
11:28The early opinion
11:32here is that
11:34Shane Mosley
11:36appears to have
11:37quicker hands.
11:38That's the impression
11:38that you get right away.
11:40Quicker hands
11:40and the most power.
11:41But right now
11:42he's overpunching
11:42because he's trying
11:43too hard to knock him out.
11:45He's only throwing
11:45big punches
11:46and he's overshooting
11:47his target.
11:48He needs to take his time,
11:49back up a little bit slowly
11:50and then set Sabalis up.
11:52And I'm sure
11:53if he hits the ball
11:54as clean
11:54with one of those
11:55big punches
11:56he'll get him out of here.
11:56and he'll get him out of here.
12:00Come here.
12:01Let him go.
12:01Let him go.
12:02Get out.
12:02Get out.
12:02Get out.
12:02Get out.
12:03Mosley told us
12:04that in the first few rounds
12:05he wants to test an opponent
12:06to see if he belongs in with them
12:09and if he can get him out of there.
12:10After that
12:11he would go back to boxing
12:12trying to win on points
12:14and chop him down.
12:15Right now
12:16he's trying to land
12:17some heavy blows
12:18cause some damage
12:19and see if he can back Sabalis up.
12:24Sabalis is supposed to be
12:25known for his body attack
12:26but I haven't seen him
12:27throw many body shots
12:28here earlier
12:28in round one.
12:30Good body shot
12:31by Sugar Shane though.
12:32Four punch combination
12:34two of them to the body.
12:40First body punch
12:41from Sabalis
12:42got in.
12:46Hard right hand
12:47seemed to shake Sabalis.
12:49He has to be careful
12:54not to punch himself out here
12:55trying so hard
12:56to knock out Sabalis early.
13:03Excellent job.
13:04Excellent.
13:04All you got to do is
13:05like I said before
13:06just relax
13:07aim at your target
13:08a couple of times
13:09you swung over the head
13:10with the right hand
13:11you're going to swing
13:12swing along the chest
13:14and catch him on the chin.
13:16Body shots is killing him
13:17but like I say
13:18take your time
13:19you're picking your shots
13:20real nice.
13:21Okay.
13:22Now set him up again
13:23with the jab.
13:25Go back to some of them
13:26round punches again
13:26to the body like
13:27those round punches
13:28are powerful to the body.
13:29Okay.
13:30Okay.
13:30Take it.
13:31In his last fight
13:32Shane Mosey scored
13:33a spectacular
13:34late knockout
13:36in the 11th round
13:37over a very tough
13:38Mexican fighter
13:39named Manuel Gomez.
13:43The good news
13:44for Shane Mosey's
13:46opponent tonight
13:47Sabalis
13:48is that he stopped
13:49the same opponent
13:50in six rounds.
13:58Apparently
13:59Roy you thought
14:00he came out
14:00a little bit
14:01too quickly
14:02in the first round.
14:03Well not really
14:04too quickly
14:04but he was a little
14:05overanxious
14:05and probably just
14:07trying to get
14:07the butterflies out.
14:08This is only
14:09his second time
14:09on HBO Boxing Out
14:11the Dark
14:11so I know
14:12he's still a little
14:12nervous
14:13but I think
14:13he'll put himself
14:14together here
14:14and he'll be okay.
14:15and he'll be okay.
14:21Sabalis comes right
14:23back.
14:23Every time
14:24he's been punched
14:24he's jumped
14:25right back
14:26at Mosey
14:26but he is right
14:30there for Mosey
14:31to hit.
14:38Mosey trying
14:39to drop in
14:39a big right hand
14:40over Sabalis
14:42his low left.
14:43Mosey's trying
14:44to finish things
14:44pretty quickly
14:45here.
14:49Good job fellas.
14:50Nice.
14:53Good body shot
14:54by Mosey.
14:55Get out.
15:01Mosey looks
15:01like he stepped
15:02out of a textbook
15:03on boxing.
15:05There's a kind
15:05of fire
15:06and ice
15:06quality about him.
15:08The ice
15:08of the technique.
15:10The fire
15:11of those hard
15:12punches.
15:12and he is
15:13landing some
15:14hard punches
15:15but Sabalis
15:15is staying
15:16right in
15:16with him now.
15:19Sabalis is the type
15:20of fighter
15:20that has to get
15:21into a late fight
15:22because he's better
15:23once the fight
15:24goes on
15:24and he gets the other
15:25guy to slow down
15:25a little bit.
15:26Right now Shane
15:27is much too fast
15:28for him
15:28and he won't be able
15:29to land a good shot
15:30to Shane's head
15:30no time soon
15:31and I don't think.
15:39He told us yesterday
15:41that he thought
15:42Mosey was a three
15:43round fighter
15:43and that he was
15:44going to try
15:44to stay on top
15:45of him because
15:46he thought he would
15:46get tired later
15:48in the fight
15:48but he's paying
15:49a heavy price
15:50to get through
15:51those early rounds
15:51right now.
15:52Yeah he's paying
15:53a big price
15:53and if he were
15:56going to do it
15:56correctly he would
15:57need to invest
15:58largely in the body
15:59shot.
16:06Neither of those
16:07right hands
16:07landed cleanly.
16:08The jab is what is
16:35keeping Moseley
16:37ahead of Cibales
16:38at this moment.
16:38Cibales
16:39doesn't have an answer
16:41for that
16:41at this time.
16:42No he doesn't
16:43but he's getting
16:44the fight
16:44to where he wants it.
16:45Shane is slowing down
16:46just a little bit.
16:47I'm sure he gets
16:47probably catching
16:47his second win
16:48and Cibales is being
16:49able to get
16:50close to Shane
16:51which is what he wants.
16:52That's his only chance
16:53to beat Shane
16:54is to pressure him
16:54try to make Shane
16:55tired
16:56and keep it
16:56a long fight.
16:57you're only throwing
17:12one punch.
17:13how are you feeling
17:15you're throwing yourself
17:19over this guy
17:20take that hand
17:21use that right hand
17:22you're standing in front of this guy
17:26and you're missing
17:27all your punches
17:27you're giving him
17:29too much time
17:30you have to work
17:31you're not working inside
17:32well than that
17:39this is the stick
17:41okay
17:41and be off the line
17:42and keep turning
17:43because he can't handle it
17:44you go to the right
17:45you don't know what to do
17:46alright
17:47the stick is the jab
17:51in the first two rounds
17:52Mosley threw 75
17:54and landed 39
17:55Cibales threw 61
17:59and landed just 10
18:00work the corner up
18:00work the corner up
18:02look like an almost accidental hit
18:15but then Larry
18:16well the way they're going
18:18at each other
18:18that's something that could happen here
18:21Cibales is very tough
18:24he's taking the punches well
18:25you can't take these kinds of punches
18:27for 10 or 11 rounds
18:28but right now
18:29he still appears eager and full
18:31a good left hook
18:34as Cibales is getting wild now
18:36and trying to put the pressure on
18:37this is the fight
18:39that Cibales wants
18:40this is how you make a speed guy
18:42slow down to your pace
18:43you throw him off with him
18:44by making him back up
18:45don't give him a chance
18:46to set you up
18:47and hit you with the
18:47pickpocket punches
18:48that Shane likes to throw
18:49good body by Shane
18:51let him go
18:51Cibales threw a nice little
18:56left hook
18:56up and he got in on Moseley
18:57stop for it
19:04stop for it
19:05stop for it
19:05come on
19:06you gotta keep your head up
19:07keep your head up
19:07okay
19:07Cibales is trying to rough
19:08rough Moseley up to get him out of his rhythm
19:10make him frustrated
19:13get him to where he can't think
19:14then he can beat him

19:15get out
19:16get out
19:16I don't think it's working
19:17and vicious vicious body shot
19:23by Moseley followed by rights and left
19:25there are the round punches
19:28that you heard his father and trainer Jack
19:31ask him for earlier
19:32say she uses jab right now
19:44to keep the balance off of him for a little while
19:46then knock him out
19:47just quit trying to knock him out right away
19:48he has to use his jab
19:49work him down a little bit more
19:50then knock him out
19:51get out
20:00get out
20:00get out
20:02get out
20:12get out
20:13get out
20:13get out
20:13get out
20:14that's what most guys look for in a good fight
20:26they want to see the combinations
20:29they want to see the combinations
20:41well Cibala said that Moseley's a three round fighter
20:43we're going to find out about that very soon because for three rounds he's been as good about as good as it gets
20:57good job
21:09good job good job
21:11let's take a look at the top if it gets in the world today there's Moseley
21:13or Zubik Nazaroff a Russian who lives in Japan is really highly regarded by people in boxing
21:16a russian who lives in japan is very highly regarded by people in boxing and stevie johnson
21:22of denver also has a belt all undefeated okay get that rhythm all right how you feel like a champ
21:32you can't let him take it this is yours you got to go to the top always the top superstar
21:39much mosley as he delivers these combinations he's been working on these things since he's 10 years old
21:46so
22:04get him to wipe that corner up
22:10this is a point in the fight roy where where mosley would like to box him
22:34then you need to use his jab to keep him under control but sabalas isn't letting him
22:40that's what makes a good fight between a good boxer and a good fighter
22:43the fighter doesn't give the boxer a chance to box him he is hitting sabalas
22:48with everything here and sabalas keeps coming yeah but that body shot hurts the ball is right there
22:56this is the first time sabalas has gone to the ropes he may be hurt if he isn't you wonder why
23:02he's hurt he's seriously hurt i can guarantee he's hurt hold on hold on listen watch yourself
23:08with the spin watch yourself with the spin okay let's go
23:16sometimes a fighter can get unhinged when his best shots don't seem to be having a big effect on his
23:27opponent so this is another little test for mosley's poise and professionalism and i think he's
23:34he's handling it pretty good he's hurt and he is down a right hand followed by a left
23:48hey you ready to go you ready to go let's go you got a box go he says he's ready to go you wonder where
23:55he's ready to go to
24:08sugar shane with the one jab and a good right up a cut this fight with the over
24:11taking his time here being very smart about how he's trying to finish sabalas
24:16not over anxious very professional and sabalas leaps back at him with a right hand but obviously still
24:24very hurt mosley takes his time not going to give him an opening to retaliate
24:35sabalas should be trying to hold on or something at this point he shouldn't let shane just keep
24:39throwing these sharp punches at him uppercut that gets in on sabalas sabalas keeps coming
24:46down and he landed a quick right hand right there
24:53when a guy won't go he won't go you just got to take care of business roy that's right
25:01i guess sabalas now thinks he's a four-round fighter
25:04you're standing there waiting for him to get hit take use those hands you have to use the right hand
25:21you have to fight you have to fight
25:25take a look at the knockdown before this flurry before this barrage a right two lefts to the body
25:33the body he had already taken some heavy shots to the head
25:47you'd like to see a young fighter finish off his combinations with the body shot most impressive
25:51the matriose sabalas has some chin and some heart behind that chin
26:08harold letterman four rounds how do you have it larry not terribly hard fight to score
26:13four to nothing 40 to 35 sugar shane mosley larry he gets a 10-8 round for the knockdown of the fourth
26:20and certainly shane mosley winning the fight easily with those good right hands the great left
26:27hooks to the body the good combinations larry please take note of the good job betty cotton's doing
26:32he's keeping this fight moving not letting either guy get away with anything
26:35well he's got two fighters in there that want to do nothing but get at each other two fighters that
26:43really want to fight get out get out get out there you go fellas i like that
26:48good job fellas both fighters a little bit uh resting here of course shane mosley can afford now
27:14to just try to win a few rounds on points because he has to know he's way ahead and that'd be very
27:18smart for him but i don't think sabalas has any more steam in his punches right now
27:33taking this kind of punishment both to the head and the body you have to wonder whether though that
27:39poundage he had to take off yesterday isn't ultimately going to just do him in no i don't
27:45think that's what's going to ultimately do him in i think these punches that he's taking
27:49are what going to what are what are going to ultimately do him in
27:52again thank you
28:01all right stop punch stop punch stop punch okay pick your heads up let's keep them up
28:07eddie cotton is doing a good job of reminding these two aggressive fighters
28:11to watch their heads.
28:13They've just done a terrific job.
28:25Get out! Get out! Get out!
28:38You got one guy here who can really throw a punch
28:40and you have another guy here who can really take a punch.
28:43Well, you always want to see what happens in that case,
28:46that when the other guy can take your best shots,
28:49how do you go about your game plan then?
28:53Well, you stick to him. You keep making him take the shot.
28:55If he can take it, fine. Just make him take it all night.
28:58Time! Okay. Okay.
29:00That's all right. That's all right. That's all right. Come on.
29:02Come on.
29:03And here is William Guthrie,
29:10the light heavyweight title holder,
29:13who will be facing Reggie Johnson,
29:16a former middleweight champion,
29:19right after this fight.
29:21You're not doing anything.
29:30He's winning the fight.
29:32I'm trying to keep his head up.
29:33He's coming in with his head down, okay?
29:34He's all right. Come, keep his head up.
29:35All right? Head up.
29:38You have to...
29:42You said off the cut.
29:44Use both hands.
29:45You're falling behind.
29:47All right. Come on, baby. Let's do this.
29:56It's hard to put a good face on this fight for Ceballos,
29:59and they are being brutally frank to him.
30:02Tell him like it is.
30:04Just as Shane Mosley is being brutally frank
30:09with him in the ring.
30:11All right. Let him go.
30:12Get out. Get out. Get out.
30:13Get out.
30:14Get out.
30:29The balance is lunging in.
30:31Mosley is just picking him off.
30:33Mosley just much too fast for him.
30:35Get out. Get out.
30:36Get out.
30:37Much too fast.
30:38That was a straight right lead that got in
30:51That guy got in by Sabalas, though.
30:52Yeah, watch out.
31:04Let's go, let's go.
31:06Get out, get out, get out.
31:08Mosley just doing what has worked for him up to now.
31:12Hard shots to the body.
31:15Jabs.
31:17And from outside,
31:20right, right hand.
31:22Overhand, right, right to the tip.
31:29Okay, let's go, let's go, let's go.
31:30Get out, get out.
31:34Sabalas is getting right where he wants to be,
31:37but he only throws one punch at a time when he gets there.
31:41And then when he gets back,
31:43he's three times as hard.
31:50My goodness, is he taking shots.
31:52Right hand's loose.
31:54I don't know when I can remember a fighter
31:56taking this many hard, clean shots from a good puncher.
32:00I think Philip Hart, they took quite a few of them.
32:02And keep coming back.
32:03No, he didn't take this many.
32:05He was smothering a lot of shots, I thought, Roy.
32:07This guy is just getting hit clean.
32:21Red right hand inside, an uppercut by Sabalas.
32:25He's still alive.
32:29He's still alive.
32:30But for how long?
32:32The youngest of 16 children, Sabalas,
32:42he knows what it is to have to fight for everything.
32:48Well, Shea Moses really doing a superb job
32:53working on Sabalas' body.
32:56You have to use that right hand.
33:22Right?
33:24I think that's a good job.
33:28Tell him, we need this, J.J.
33:29We need this.
33:30Tell him, J.J.
33:31Tell him, J.J.
33:32Tell him, J.J.
33:33Tell him, J.J.
33:34Tell him, J.J.
33:35Tell him, J.J.
33:36Tell him, J.J.
33:37Tell him, J.J.
33:38Tell him, J.J.
33:39Tell him, J.J.
33:40Tell him, J.J.
33:41Tell him, J.J.
33:42Tell him, J.J.
33:43Here is David Reed, who won his seventh professional fight last week.
33:48The only man to win a gold medal for America in the 96 Olympics.
33:53Josh, he'll be while my gadget is up.
33:55Josh, he'll be while her out.
33:56Josh, hey, your boss.
33:57Josh, you get it on your shoulder on your side.
33:58Josh, okay.
33:59When you get those body size, who's him?
34:00Take those round body size.
34:01Go!
34:02Shana Mosley landing two-thirds of his punches in the last round through 69 punches.
34:13And none of them are pity-pats, Roy.
34:14and he throws has bad intentions written all over it.
34:18In fact, you wonder if sometimes he shouldn't throw
34:21a little change of pace, soft punches in there
34:24to get his opponent out of sync.
34:26Yeah, you Peter Pan to set him up for the big shots.
34:28That would be a brilliant idea for Sugar Shane to follow,
34:31but sometimes, you know, when a guy can land
34:33these big punches, that's all he wants to do,
34:37especially when he can land them with the consistency
34:39that Shane is landing with.
34:44When he was 15 years old, Shane Mosley was boxing in the gym
34:48with the likes of Azuma Nelson, Gennaro Hernandez,
34:52both outstanding champions.
34:59Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
35:02Pick him up, pick him up this time, okay?
35:03Pick him up, all right? Let's go, you pick him up, let's go.
35:10Get out, get out, get out!
35:14Keep him up, keep him up, both of you.
35:16Keep him up, keep him up, both of you.
35:23Mosley is willing to fight him at close quarters,
35:27at a distance from outside the building,
35:31any place you want.
35:32And that's bad.
35:33When a guy can beat you inside,
35:34he can beat you outside, he can beat you high,
35:36he can beat you low.
35:37It's just no win for you.
35:39Okay, let him go. Get out, get out!
35:42This has to be a tough situation to be in.
35:45Get out, hands are free. Let's go, get out!
35:47Get out, get out!
35:51And still, Ceballos comes to fight.
35:56Go, go, go, go, go, go!
35:59Go, go, go, go!
36:01Go, go, go, go!
36:04Go, go, go, go!
36:06Go, go, go, go, go!
36:13My goodness.
36:15That's all you can say, Hale.
36:19They are just trying to rip each other's bodies apart.
36:23They're free! They're free! Let them go!
36:30Get out! Get out!
36:37All right, stop running! Stop running! Good job!
36:39Stop running! Step back!
36:40Nice job! Thank you!
36:43Left, right, left.
36:48He's weak! He's weak!
36:50He's weak!
36:51He's weak!
36:52I think Sugar Shane basically has taken all the power out of Sabales.
36:55I don't think Sabales has anything left as far as the power section goes.
36:59Let it go! Let it go!
37:01Time! Time!
37:02Good job.
37:07You got close. You're trying to scare him down.
37:09You won the round, okay?
37:12But here on out, you got to boss him a little more intense with the jab.
37:17You got to keep the jab in his face.
37:19Get on your toes a little bit.
37:20One, two.
37:21Boom, boom, boom.
37:22One, two.
37:23Boom, boom, boom.
37:24One, two.
37:25I can't impress upon you enough to get those round body shots in there.
37:29Okay.
37:30They hurt, Shane.
37:31They hurt.
37:32He can't take the body shots.
37:34He can take those head shots.
37:35You knocked him down.
37:36Yeah, true enough, the head shot.
37:37But the body shot set it up.
37:39Okay.
37:40You have to hit him in the head.
37:42Use that uppercut.
37:43He's smaller than you are.
37:45What are you doing up there?
37:46Come on.
37:47Stop using that hook.
37:52Use the uppercut.
37:54And take a step back and hit.
37:58Oh, I just want to pick.
37:59Okay.
38:01You're the champion.
38:02Go.
38:19Usually now in a patient mood.
38:22His father gave us some very good instructions in the corner.
38:25He told him to start the box the guy more.
38:27And I think this is a smart thing to do
38:28because Sabalas' only chance is to make it into a slugfest.
38:31But it's not a slugfest,
38:33and Sabalas is really just totally outclassed.
38:39Now, you see him lightening up on some of the shots.
38:42He's not throwing everything so hard.
38:44Just like what you spoke about earlier.
38:46Let him go. Let him go. Get out. Get out.
38:51That's good. That's good.
38:52Well, at this point in the fight, Roy,
38:56it would seem that Sabalas would have to do something
39:00very, very dramatic.
39:01Yeah, but he doesn't have to turn this fight around.
39:03He doesn't have the power left in him to do anything dramatic.
39:06Shane Moses has been beating his body since round one,
39:09and I don't think he really has any power left.
39:11So I don't see anything dramatic really happening for him.
39:14Rosely briefly turns left
39:16and throws a long left hand just as he throws his right.
39:20What can't he do?
39:22Halt, halt, halt, halt!
39:26Halt, halt!
39:27Halt, halt! Halt, halt, halt.
39:28Halt, halt, halt. Halt!
39:29Halt, halt, halt! Halt, halt, halt, halt.
39:31Halt, halt, halt.
39:33Okay. All right.
39:35Look, take your time.
39:37You've got up to cinco minutos.
39:39Take your time.
39:41Okay.
39:43Sabalas had his back to us.
39:45We couldn't tell how low that punch was.
39:48It did look slightly below the belt.
39:53Take your time. Walk around. Walk around.
39:57And perhaps, Roy, that came from his turning around
40:00and being a southpaw.
40:01No, I don't think so. I think he's back in a...
40:03Okay.
40:04But I think he hit him...
40:05We got a point.
40:06...right on the... high on the cup.
40:07I don't think he was really that low.
40:08We got a point. We got a point.
40:09Low blow. We got one point.
40:11You hear they're taking a point away for a low blow.
40:14I gave you a warning before, Shane.
40:15We took it.
40:16Yeah, you hit him way down low. Okay.
40:18Let's go.
40:20Mosley claims it was not a low blow.
40:23We'll get a look at the pictures between rounds.
40:26At this point, it really doesn't make a difference
40:29for Shane anyway.
40:31Well, it becomes...
40:32If... if... if Ceballos can come on and win the round,
40:35it becomes a two-point round.
40:36It gives him some hope.
40:38All right, get out! Get out! Get out!
40:39Because he needs a couple of those
40:41to get back in the fight.
40:43and there, go!
40:50We need trouble!
40:51The ballast is hurt!
40:52And Mosley looks like he wants to get that point back
40:57right now.
40:57And he has.
40:58And Ceballos may not get up.
41:01This fight is over.
41:05A spectacular performance by Shane Mosley.
41:12After that Philip Holliday fight last August,
41:16when he dominated Holliday but did not get full credit for it,
41:21Shane Mosley wanted to put on a show tonight,
41:25and boy, did he ever, Roy.
41:28Yes, he did.
41:29Now, I think people would look at Shane Mosley
41:31through a different set of eyes.
41:36I don't remember what I've seen as complete a performance
41:40from a boxing point of view,
41:43from a power point of view in a long time.
41:46His father calls him a power boxer.
41:49That is exactly right, Roy.
41:51I think that's what he strives to be.
41:53I think Shane relies on his power some,
41:55but he knows that he has fast hands
41:58and that his skills are remarkable.
42:00Now we have to look at Ceballos,
42:01who took so much punishment,
42:03who showed so much heart,
42:05but he is hurt.
42:07Watch Mosley as he finishes him.
42:10Apparently spurred on
42:11by the referee's decision
42:13to take a point away from him for a low blow,
42:16and he's just raining everything
42:18on the Panamanian challenger.
42:21Yeah, and the good thing about it
42:22was that he consistently went up and down,
42:25up and down.
42:26He went from the head to the body,
42:28from the head to the body.
42:31This kind of fighting, Roy,
42:33and everybody has their own style.
42:35Your unorthodox style works fabulously for you.
42:39For you, Oscar De La Hoya's style
42:42works fabulously for him,
42:43but you don't see many fighters
42:46with this kind of technique,
42:48this kind of fire,
42:51this kind of power,
42:53all blended into one fighter.
42:57No comment.
42:58No comment.
43:00What you see is what Savalo's got.
43:21Yeah, he got it good all night long.
43:23You have to give him the highest marks for courage.
43:27It's not often that a fighter gets a shot
43:30out of the title.
43:31He made the most of it.
43:32In that he gave everything he had.
43:37Let's go to the ring announcer,
43:42Thomas Triber, for the official particulars.
43:45Ladies and gentlemen,
43:48we have the official time.
43:49Two minutes, 34 seconds of the eighth round
43:51with your winner by way of knockout
43:54and still IBF lightweight champion of the world,
43:58Sugar Shane Moosley.
44:01Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
44:03And Steel, come on in the house.
44:05Yeah, it's all tonight, guys.
44:07Come on, buddy.
44:08Come on, buddy.
44:08Come on, buddy.
44:09Come on, buddy.
44:11See you, buddy.
44:12Things all right.
44:12Better to shut aside.
44:13Ladies and gentlemen,
44:14there's a black and white for your eyes.
44:16Bye, you're old.
44:17Yes.
44:18Come on, man.
44:20Come on.
44:21Come on.
44:22Come on, man.
44:23Come on.
44:24Come on.
44:25Come on.
44:26Come on.
44:27All right, Roy, what do you see in the future for Shane Mosley?
44:46Where is he going to fit into the boxing picture?
44:49Well, first thing I think is that he is going to quickly go into pound-for-pound books.
44:54Now, I don't know how high he can get up there yet, but he deserves to be in at least the top 12 pound-for-pound best fighters in the world today.
45:03You, as an unorthodox fighter who has made your quickness and your power work for you in ways that other fighters don't, how do you look at a fighter like Mosley?
45:14Well, I look at a fighter like Shane Mosley as a guy who is well-schooled.
45:18Most of the time, when your father raises you and teaches you to fight, he teaches you every aspect of the game.
45:23That's why I said, when you said, when have I ever seen a guy like that, I know what it is to be that type of guy.
45:28That's my style. That's the way you fight. That's the way my father taught me to fight.
45:31Your father is harder on you because he wants you to learn the best.
45:34He teaches you how to fight inside, outside, left, right, how to punch, how to box.
45:38He teaches you how to do it all, and that's what I see in Sugar Shane Mosley.
