00:00The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:22Though it's been 34 years since his last bout,
00:25Sugar Ray Robinson remains the measuring stick for boxing greatness.
00:28His combination of power and speed redefined the sport,
00:32and today his legacy lives on through the most sincere form of flattery, imitation.
00:37Roy Jones and Shane Mosley, two of boxing's best,
00:40help us ring in the new year by showcasing the skills that so often bring comparisons
00:44to one of boxing's grandest legends.
00:47Like Robinson, Roy Jones' unorthodox style defies boxing logic.
00:52Jones landing early power shots. Down he goes.
00:55He uses machine gun bursts of power punches to dismantle his opponents.
00:59With vicious body shots and lightning head blows,
01:02Jones has collected three titles in three different weight classes.
01:06We may be seeing one of the most talented fighters that's ever come along in this game.
01:11The punching power, the speed, he has it all.
01:14With a smooth blend of hand and foot speed,
01:16lightweight champion Sugar Shane Mosley is proving a worthy inheritor of the sweet nickname.
01:20He has such quick hands, Jim. It's so beautiful to watch him throw these quick combinations.
01:24He's a real classic fighter.
01:27Blinding his opponents with two-fisted flurries,
01:29Mosley has catapulted into boxing's elite, stopping 28 of 30 victims.
01:34You don't see this kind of technique, fire, this kind of power, all blended into one fighter.
01:41Though similar in technique and success, Jones and Mosley are on opposite career paths.
01:47Jones has made it clear we may be witnessing one of his last several pro bouts,
01:50but Sugar Shane is just reaching the crest of his bright fighting career.
01:55Tonight, we honor the magic of the old by ringing in the new,
01:57showcasing two of boxing's best.
01:59Roy Jones defending his light heavyweight title,
02:02Shane Mosley defending his lightweight crown.
02:05As they follow in the footsteps of one legend,
02:07they create two new ones for the future.
02:09Roy Jones defending his light heavyweight title,
02:39tonight, live from the Pensacola Civic Center,
03:09HBO Sports presents World Championship Boxing,
03:12with a doubleheader card featuring two of the most talented and accomplished fighters in the sport today.
03:18Our evening begins with lightweight champion Shane Mosley taking on Golden Johnson,
03:23and then hometown hero Roy Jones Jr. puts his light heavyweight title on the line
03:28against full-time New York City police officer, full-time professional boxer, Rick Frazier.
03:34A birthday celebration for Roy Jones, one week shy of his 30th birthday.
03:41He elects to fight for the third time on HBO,
03:44and the 20th time in his professional career in his hometown of Pensacola.
03:49An unusually blustery and cold weekend in Pensacola,
03:53but it will do nothing to inhibit the probable sellout crowd,
03:57which will fill the Pensacola Civic Center to root for their own,
04:01and to witness the supreme talents of Shane Mosley,
04:04the lightweight champion in the first of the two bouts.
04:07Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
04:12We welcome you to this beginning-of-the-new-year edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
04:17For the second time in two months,
04:19both Shane Mosley and Roy Jones appear on a card together here on HBO,
04:23and in dramatic contrast to most of the boxing cards we've been bringing you recently here on HBO,
04:31this night is more a showcase for two great dominant champions
04:35rather than a showdown for supremacy in any given weight class.
04:40Working with me, as always, HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant.
04:43Larry, we mentioned that within the past two months,
04:45Roy Jones and Shane Mosley shared a card in Foxwoods, Connecticut,
04:49in which both scored relatively easy technical knockout victories.
04:53Are we in for more of the same?
04:56Probably less of the same, Jim.
04:58Fewer rounds, in part because Jones' opponent, Rick Fraser, the policeman,
05:04is only the toughest guy in his old precinct.
05:08But as a wise old boxing man once said,
05:12hell, the whole world is an underdog,
05:14and sometimes the underdogs do win.
05:17More than likely, what we're here for is a concert.
05:21Donna Summers and Janet Jackson with boxing gloves on,
05:25and hopefully we get some outstanding performances.
05:30Well, we certainly would from Donna Summers and Janet Jackson.
05:32We expect we probably will from Shane Mosley and Roy Jones Jr.
05:36We would have had a great performance from George Foreman again tonight,
05:39but of course George was in training for the fight he might have expected to take place against Larry Holmes,
05:44and so we've called in our favorite ace in the hole,
05:47the legendary fight trainer and manager, Gil Clancy.
05:51Gil, as we get ready for Shane Mosley against Golden Johnson,
05:54the world knows about Mosley from everything he's accomplished in the last couple of years.
05:58Golden Johnson went to a decision, a relatively close decision,
06:03against Israel Pito Cardona, one of the better fighters in the lightweight division.
06:07Does that mean that he's of the kind of quality that could give Shane Mosley a real test?
06:12Well, Golden Johnson is a good, solid, fundamental fighter.
06:15Good snapping jab, good right hand, good endurance, and takes a great punch.
06:19The only thing is, he's only had 20 fights.
06:21I think Mosley does everything he does, but only better.
06:24Well, we'll see as Mosley goes for a 29th knockout in 31 fights tonight.
06:30And there's a look at Golden Johnson, originally from Houston, Texas,
06:34has been fighting and living out of San Antonio, Texas in recent years.
06:38After a long layoff from 1995 to 1997,
06:41when he said that he was poorly managed
06:44and not in a position to do good business in his boxing career,
06:48he tried to make up for lost time with eight appearances in the ring in a very busy 1998.
06:54And he is surrounded by fighters, including Reggie Johnson,
06:58one of the title holders in the light heavyweight division,
07:02and his girlfriend, who is a junior welterweight.
07:06Teddy Benitez, girlfriend of Golden Johnson,
07:09fights at 140 pounds.
07:11Johnson tonight appearing at 135.
07:14You do the math.
07:16And the record for Golden Johnson, 15 wins, two losses and two draws.
07:20The most significant loss, that tough decision against Peter Cardona,
07:24some ringside observers felt that Johnson deserved the victory in the fight.
07:28This is his first chance at a title belt.
07:36And Sugar Shane Mosley,
07:39a long way from his home in Pomona, California,
07:42but the man with the highest knockout percentage among active champions,
07:46increasingly comfortable fighting in the East, on the East Coast,
07:50on cards with Roy Jones.
07:51He considers it something of an honor to be paired with Jones,
07:54whom he calls the best fighter in the sport.
07:57And whom Jones calls the best lightweight he's ever seen outside of Roberto Duran.
08:03He had five title defenses last year,
08:07won them all by knockouts or TKOs,
08:09and probably will be named Boxer of the Year
08:13by the Boxing Writers Association.
08:16Is he Larry Merchant's Boxer of the Year?
08:18Absolutely.
08:24Mosley managed and trained by his father, Jack Mosley.
08:28It's been a highly beneficial pairing for the two of them.
08:32They've created a style and a system that they call power boxing.
08:37And what has it done for Mosley?
08:3928 knockouts in 30 fights.
08:427-0, 6 knockouts in championship fights.
08:46Since winning the title from Phillip Holliday,
08:48he has successfully defended it by knockout every time.
08:52So as Sugar Shane Mosley gets ready to pit his undefeated record against Golden Johnson,
09:01we take a look at the tale of the tape here in Pensacola, Florida.
09:05Mosley weighed in a quarter of a pound under the weight limit
09:07and has put on 11 and a quarter pounds since.
09:11Nine pounds added to Johnson's frame since he weighed in at 135,
09:15those weigh-ins more than 24 hours ago.
09:17One and a half inch height advantage for Mosley
09:19and a two-and-a-half-inch reach advantage.
09:21Johnson tried to make up for that
09:22by sparring against long-armed sparring partners.
09:26Punch that numbers, Larry.
09:28Both, as you can see, are relatively equal in the numbers, if nowhere else,
09:35although Mosley is the more accurate puncher.
09:40Same thing holds with jabs.
09:44And rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
09:47The Shane Mosley-Golden Johnson fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
09:51using the rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
09:54There is no standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
09:58Only the referee can stop the fight,
10:00and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
10:02including the 12th and final round.
10:04And, Jim, we have a slight controversy.
10:06The ring tonight is 16 feet, nine inches.
10:09We checked with the president of the World Boxing Council,
10:11Jose Suleman, who's sanctioning the main event
10:14between Roy Jones and Rick Frazier.
10:16And Jose said that the minimum standard
10:18for a WVC ring in a title fight is 18 feet.
10:21Jose said he instructed his referee, Armando Garcia,
10:24to measure the ring.
10:25Armando did check the ring,
10:26and he says it is 16 feet, nine inches.
10:29And the smaller ring may redound
10:30to our entertainment value advantage.
10:33While you're watching this upcoming bout,
10:34you can also log on to www.hbo.com slash boxing
10:38to chat and score each round of tonight's action.
10:41Also, go ahead and record your prediction
10:44for the upcoming welterweight showdown
10:46between Oscar De La Hoya and Ike Cuarte.
10:49Now let's go up to ring announcer Mark Barrow

12:52Tommy Kimmins.
12:56Now, ladies and gentlemen,
12:58here are the principals first
13:00in the blue corner.
13:01To my right,
13:02wearing the gold sequined trunks,
13:05weighing in at 135 pounds
13:07with a professional record of 15 victories,
13:11two defeats,
13:12two draws,
13:13and 10 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:16He hails from Killeen, Texas,
13:19is rated number 12 in the world
13:21by the IBF
13:22and the challenger,
13:25Golden Johnson.
13:28Johnson.
13:30His opponent,
13:32in the red corner,
13:34wearing the cream-colored trunks
13:36with leopard trim,
13:38he weighs in
13:39at 134 and three-quarter pounds.
13:42His professional record reads,
13:45undefeated
13:45in 30 professional bouts,
13:4828 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:52He hails
13:53from Pomona, California,
13:55the IBF
13:56lightweight champion of the world,
14:00Sugar
14:00Shane
14:02Mosley.
14:05Mosley
14:0612 rounds
14:08for the IBF
14:09lightweight championship
14:11of the world.
14:12Two seconds only.
14:14Gentlemen,
14:19this fight
14:20is for the championship
14:21of the world,
14:22and I gave you your instructions.
14:24I want to remind you
14:25that this audience
14:26is here to watch you fight,
14:27so keep it clean.
14:29Touch them up.
14:31Golden Johnson
14:32said he would
14:33go right after
14:35Shane Mosley,
14:36so the size of the ring
14:38would be irrelevant
14:40if that were to pass,
14:42Gil.
14:43Well, I'd like to see it
14:44because I think it would
14:45make a heck of a fight
14:45as long as it goes,
14:47but it's like going into
14:49a woodchopper
14:49walking into Shane Mosley.
14:52Golden Johnson
14:53says he believes
14:54he's stronger than
14:55Shane Mosley.
14:56Johnson's best friend,
14:58Jesse James Leha,
15:00is the man Mosley
15:02scored a technical knockout
15:03over in his last fight
15:04on November 14,
15:05and in that fight,
15:06Mosley hit Leha
15:07so many times
15:08on the top of the head
15:09that he badly bruised
15:10both of his hands,
15:12but he says that
15:12they have had
15:13sufficient time
15:14to recover
15:14as he gets ready
15:15for tonight,
15:16and Mosley sneaks in
15:17a right cross
15:18early on in the action.
15:20Little light triple hook
15:42for Mosley,
15:44give you a look
15:46at his fast hands.
15:47That's a range finding.
15:48Larry just trying
15:50to find a range.
15:51I like the way
15:52Johnson, though,
15:53is staying pretty cool.
15:55Very calm.
16:02He's not using
16:03that snapping left jab
16:04that we saw him use
16:05so well against Cardona.
16:07Johnson seemingly reluctant
16:19to let punches go
16:20in the early going.
16:21That's given Shane Mosley
16:23a fairly free reign
16:24to launch his offense,
16:25working behind the jab
16:26and coming in
16:27with power punches
16:28as you see.
16:29James Leha
16:30told his buddy
16:31Golden Johnson
16:32in preparation
16:32for this fight
16:33that Mosley punches
16:35harder to the body
16:36than to the head.
16:37Body shots for Mosley
16:38helped set up
16:39the TKO over Leha.
16:41I think Mosley's
16:42best punches
16:42are to the body.
16:43One of the best
16:44body punches
16:44I've seen
16:45in a long, long time,
16:47especially with
16:47that left hook.
16:50He said he learned
16:52to emphasize
16:53that punch
16:54as sparring
16:56with a lot
16:56of Mexican fighters
16:57in Los Angeles gyms.
17:01Well, he throws
17:02that typical
17:02Mexican left hook
17:04to the body
17:05gets good leverage
17:06on that punch.
17:07In fact,
17:08in early sparring,
17:10early in his
17:10professional career
17:11with the noted
17:12Mexican body puncher
17:13Zach Padilla,
17:15Mosley says
17:15that frequently
17:16the two would stand
17:17and just ignore
17:18headshots
17:19and trade to the body
17:20for long stretches
17:21of time.
17:23Zach Padilla
17:24was a very,
17:24very tough guy
17:25and a very,
17:26very busy fighter.
17:28So I'm sure
17:28he helped
17:29teach Mosley
17:30how to get in shape
17:31to fight.
17:33Well, you talk about
17:33how some fathers
17:34have protected
17:35their sons
17:36as pro fighters,
17:37but Shane Mosley
17:38in the gym
17:39has been in
17:40with the best
17:40Los Angeles
17:41has to offer.
17:42Right hand lands
17:43inside for Golden Johnson
17:45and Johnson
17:45took by Johnson
17:46also.
17:47Beginning to trade
17:47more freely
17:48with Shane Mosley.
17:51So you get the sense
17:52that maybe Johnson
17:53has now tasted
17:54Mosley's power
17:55or thinks he has
17:56believes he can
17:57handle the prospect
17:58of trading
17:59with the champion
17:59and did so
18:00in the last
18:0130 seconds
18:02of the round.
18:05Excellent work,
18:05excellent work.
18:07He didn't like
18:07that body shot.
18:09Right?
18:11Body shot
18:11to the right side
18:12is devastating.
18:13I mean,
18:13that's why
18:13he's starting to hold it.
18:15He's moving
18:16to the left.
18:19You want to cut that off.
18:21Except the right hand.
18:22Not every right hand.
18:23Step it up.
18:25Put the pressure on him.
18:26You're rolling good.
18:28He can't hit you
18:28to the body.
18:29Keep the jab pumping.
18:30Roll the side.
18:31I want that left foot
18:31coming back.
18:32You hit him the first time.
18:33Keep it going.
18:34But stay busy.
18:35Put a little pressure on him.
18:35Stop backing up.
18:36I don't want you to outbox him.
18:37I don't want that.
18:38You got to go to him.
18:39He wants you to try
18:40to outbox him
18:41because he's doing
18:41the outside.
18:42Step in,
18:43double,
18:43and triple your jab.
18:44All right?
18:44Roll inside.
18:45And there's
18:46Teddy Bonita's,
18:47Golden Johnson's girlfriend,
18:48sizing up
18:49her boyfriend.
18:54I wonder if she agrees
18:56with the trainer.
18:57Do you, Gil?
18:59Well, again,
19:00it's kind of tough
19:02to just walk in
19:03and put a lot of pressure
19:04on a guy
19:04with all the talent
19:05that Shane Mosley has.
19:08But you're not
19:09going to beat him
19:09by boxing
19:10is what his trainer is.
19:12That's exactly right.
19:13You have to take chances.
19:15So Eddie Mustafa's
19:16probably
19:16defying the odds
19:19and doing what he has
19:20to do to try
19:20to win the fight.
19:21I admire him for that.
19:24And just to underline
19:25the point again
19:26about Golden Johnson's
19:27girlfriend,
19:27Teddy Bonita's,
19:28whom we saw
19:28at ringside,
19:29she's a 140-pound fighter.
19:31Golden says
19:32she's a boxer puncher.
19:33And Johnson landed
19:36another good left hook
19:37in that last exchange.
19:38And you know,
19:38with all of the talent
19:39that Shane Mosley has,
19:40no question about that,
19:42I've seen a lot of fighters
19:43all of a sudden
19:43get hit a good solid shot
19:45and all of that talent
19:46goes right down the drain.
19:49Well, that's one of the tests
19:51of what a fighter is
19:53beside hand speed.
19:54We want to see
19:55how he deals
19:56with adversity
19:56because ultimately
19:57it is going to come.
20:03There's that natural
20:05athletic ability
20:06of Mosley.
20:08Very unaltered
20:08dogs move,
20:09but they were successful.
20:11Mosley landing the jab
20:13and chopping a right hand
20:14behind it.
20:14Goes back to trying
20:15to establish his jab
20:16and fires a right hand lead.
20:19Golden Johnson
20:19has traded well
20:22in some exchanges
20:23here early
20:23in round number two.
20:24Hard right hand body shot
20:28by Mosley.
20:28And again,
20:29Johnson was trying
20:30to counter with that left hook.
20:32It's a short left hook too.
20:34He nails it,
20:35he lands it on his chin.
20:35We may have some fun.
20:37So it looks as though
20:38Johnson,
20:39conscious of Mosley's
20:40commitment to punching
20:41to the body,
20:42wants to counter upstairs
20:44when he can
20:44against Mosley's body assault.
20:47Well, that's exactly
20:48the thing to do, Jim,
20:49if you can do it.
20:49Here you go,
20:50Mosley switching to south four
20:51and very effective
20:53switching to south four.
20:55Fires a left hand lead
20:56out of the southpaw stance
20:58and lands it solidly.
20:59He also switched southpaw
21:01on two or three occasions
21:02against Jesse James Lehoff.
21:04Now right hand lead
21:05sets up the left hand
21:07to the body for Mosley
21:08and Johnson not firing back
21:10in that exchange.
21:20Mosley says he's at his best
21:21when he's up on his toes
21:23and moving,
21:23but he definitely
21:24has a tendency
21:25to settle down
21:27on flat feet
21:28and just whack away.
21:30Well, again,
21:31that's up to his corner
21:32to remind him
21:33to stay on those toes
21:34and keep moving.
21:36But again,
21:36you can see
21:36he's still able
21:37to get rid of some punches
21:38whether they're landing
21:40or not.
21:40He's throwing them
21:41with bad intentions.
21:54Golden Johnson
21:55willing to fight
21:57with Shane Mosley
21:58in the first two rounds
21:59and those of us
22:00looking for entertainment
22:01are happy to see that.
22:03Still to come tonight,
22:04Roy Jones Jr.
22:06looking for another victory.
22:07This is the third time
22:08that he has fought
22:09here in Pensacola
22:10in his hometown
22:11on HBO.
22:12Turned down
22:13bigger money
22:14to fight
22:15in some casino towns
22:16which might have been
22:17willing to host the bout
22:18because he says
22:19every once in a while
22:21he likes to service
22:21his obligation
22:22to his hometown fans
22:23and since this is
22:24one week before
22:25his 30th birthday,
22:26what better time?
22:27You've taken a whole lot
22:30out of these two rounds.
22:32You'd be surprised
22:32if we go past eight rounds.
22:36Continue with the power
22:37bouncing, intensity,
22:38and just don't throw
22:40caution to the wind.
22:42He still wants to move.
22:43Here we see Shane Mosley
22:45switching southpaw
22:46back to conventional style.
22:48Right hand.
22:49A little bit of a leaping left
22:51later on in the round.
22:52As you can see,
22:53southpaw,
22:54and I was really impressed,
22:56Gil, by the way
22:57he threw that left hand
22:58from the southpaw stance.
22:59It was like
23:00perfectly natural southpaw.
23:01Natural ability.
23:02You can't beat
23:03that natural ability.
23:04And I agreed with his father
23:06when he told him.
23:07He said,
23:07you've taken a lot
23:08out of this guy already
23:09because he has landed
23:11some good solid body punches,
23:12especially in the second round.
23:14Well, and he's thrown
23:14178 punches
23:16by CompuBox numbers
23:17in the first two rounds,
23:18landing more than half of them.
23:20So heavy work early
23:22by Mosley,
23:23averaging 89 punches per round.
23:25That's a very big number
23:26for him.
23:26There you go,
23:28James.
23:29Right hand, I'm good.
23:31Right hand, I'm good.
23:33Switch to southpaw,
23:34and now he's back
23:34to orthodox style again.
23:36It's almost like
23:37when he does it, Gil,
23:38it's almost like
23:38a pass receiver
23:39who goes out
23:40looking over one shoulder
23:41and then turns
23:42the other shoulder.
23:43Quick left hook
23:44landed by Golden Johnson.
23:46Johnson
23:46countering as Mosley
23:49went to the body again.
23:50Johnson hasn't been able
23:54to land his jab,
23:56but he keeps putting it
23:56out there.
23:57The left hook
23:58has been by far
23:59the most effective punch
24:00when Golden Johnson
24:02has been able
24:02to sneak it in.
24:03You know,
24:04you hit the nail
24:04on the head.
24:05You say,
24:05he's putting it out there.
24:07He's not throwing the punch
24:08with any concentration
24:09or any speed
24:10on that chair.
24:11He's just putting it out there,
24:12as you mentioned.
24:13And that's an invitation
24:16using the Mosley's
24:16right hand.
24:17Any kind of counter.
24:27Sugar Shane Mosley
24:28in the cream-colored trunks
24:29with leopard skin trim.
24:32Golden Johnson,
24:33who's named,
24:34incidentally,
24:36for Golden Richards
24:37of the Dallas Cowboys.
24:38His parents were
24:39a big Dallas Cowboys fan,
24:40loved number 83.
24:41I think Golden Richards,
24:42he was a good catcher,
24:43wasn't he?
24:44He could catch.
24:44Well, I'm talking
24:45Golden Johnson
24:46because he's caught
24:47some already.
24:48He has been
24:49mostly the receiver.
25:09Well, he's doing
25:11some good damage
25:11inside, Mosley.
25:13Getting good shots
25:14to the body.
25:16Uppercut lands
25:17for Mosley.
25:17May have been
25:18the hardest punch
25:18of the bout so far.
25:21Then go.
25:28Johnson is a little hurt
25:29at the moment.
25:30I think the uppercut
25:31left him hurt,
25:32and he goes down
25:32on a double left hook.
25:34To the body.
25:34two, three, four, five, six,
25:37seven, eight.
25:41He lost.
25:41In Florida,
25:42if you need time
25:43to collect yourself,
25:44you'd better go down.
25:46No standing eight count here.
25:50And again,
25:51as we had mentioned,
25:51that left hook
25:52to the body by Mosley,
25:53that's probably
25:54his best punch.
25:54And another left hook
25:55to the body
25:56puts Golden Johnson
25:57down the second time.
25:59One, two, five, six, seven, eight.
26:04You all right?
26:05All right.
26:06The end of round number three,
26:09but a round in which
26:10Shane Mosley
26:10knocked Golden Johnson
26:12down twice,
26:13both times
26:14with left hooks
26:15to the body.
26:15You got a good hit?
26:16Thank you very much.
26:17You got a good hit?
26:19He's got an extension
26:20to land the hooks, Golden.
26:22That's what I'm telling you.
26:22You got to be inside.
26:24All right?
26:24He's not going to reach around.
26:25You're catching with your left hook
26:26all the time.
26:27But you pull him back,
26:29he's going to hit you
26:29with your left hook to the body.
26:31You got to go to the man.
26:32He's not doing anything.
26:34Son, come on, baby.
26:35Come on, baby.
26:35You work too hard.
26:36You're not fighting.
26:37That ain't like you.
26:39You're not fighting, baby.
26:40What's up?
26:42What's up?
26:42Hey, man.
26:43Hey,
26:43he's a man just like you, man.
26:45What you waiting for?
26:47You ain't doing nothing.
26:48You're just like letting him punch.
26:49You're not doing nothing.
26:50You got to go to water.
26:52Get a look at
26:53Shane's body work
26:55by Mosley.
26:57Right and left.
26:59Two crisp,
27:01thudding left hands
27:02to the ribs.
27:04Right in there.
27:07Boy, it hurts from here.
27:08It's almost like
27:09a saddle being slapped
27:12by a two-by-four.
27:14Partially set up
27:15by the right uppercut,
27:17which seemed to have
27:17stunned Johnson
27:18about seven or eight seconds
27:19before.
27:23And, of course,
27:24truly great finishers.
27:25When they have a man
27:26in trouble,
27:27they remember
27:28to go to the body.
27:29Mosley is in that category.
27:31Yes, he is.
27:34Nice combination
27:35by Johnson.
27:35You heard
27:37Eddie Mustafa Mohammed
27:38between rounds
27:39saying,
27:39Golden,
27:40you got to go
27:40fight the man.
27:43And Johnson
27:43has listened
27:44to his corner
27:44as he comes out
27:45more aggressively
27:46in round four.
27:48I thought the look
27:49on Johnson's face
27:50when he was listening
27:51in his corner
27:52was saying,
27:53easier said than done.
27:55Yeah, the look
27:55of resignation.
27:56I noticed
27:57exactly the same thing.
27:59But he's brave
27:59and willing.
28:00Harold,
28:00how do you have
28:01it through three?
28:01Jim,
28:02three to nothing,
28:0330 to 25.
28:04Sugar Shane Mosley.
28:05I made a beautiful job
28:06by Mosley so far.
28:07He looks excellent.
28:08Beautiful ring.
28:09Jenner stripped away,
28:09steps to the side.
28:10And you've got to love
28:11that double left hook
28:12that he knocked him
28:12down twice with.
28:13In other words,
28:14he'll throw two left hooks
28:15before he pulls his arm back.
28:16That third round,
28:1710 to seven
28:18because of the two knockdowns.
28:20Butting right hand
28:21from Mosley.
28:22Another left to the body
28:24and Golden Johnson
28:25in trouble again
28:26as he tries to clamp
28:28Mosley's arm
28:28and now comes back
28:29with punches of his own.
28:31Brave performance
28:32by Golden Johnson.
28:33But his punches
28:34are so much slower
28:35than Shane Mosley's punches.
28:37You can see the difference
28:38in talent in there.
28:42Well, you're going to see
28:43the difference in talent
28:43against most opponents
28:45at 135 pounds
28:47when Shane Mosley
28:48is in the ring.
28:52He really loves
28:53to punch to the body.
28:55Some fighters
28:55don't learn that
28:56until they're way,
28:57way further advanced
28:58in their career.
28:58And he's landing
28:59at a fearsome rate
29:00upstairs as the result
29:02of all the body punches.
29:04Golden Johnson
29:05just doesn't know
29:05where to defend himself
29:06because Mosley's coming
29:08from all angles
29:09with hard punches.
29:10Blistering right hand
29:19by Sugar Shane
29:19right to the body.
29:21And to Johnson's credit
29:22he's still pegging
29:23still trying to...
29:24Oh, and lands an uppercut.
29:27Don't work out of it.
29:29Work out of it.
29:29Oh, no, guys!
29:34Mosley was dispensing
29:36with defense there
29:36for a second
29:37and Golden Johnson
29:38got a free shot
29:39with that right uppercut.
29:41You know,
29:41Golden Johnson's stature
29:43went up
29:43in that very close loss
29:46to Gardona.
29:47And no matter
29:48what happens here
29:50he's still showing
29:51that he's a formidable fighter.
29:53He's a real
29:54professional prize fighter.
30:01Putting some contact
30:02on Mosley
30:03even while being
30:04largely outclassed.
30:06Hey, win it, bro!
30:07You don't have anything left.
30:15Hold the trumpet.
30:16Hold the trumpet.
30:16Hold the trumpet.
30:16But you still
30:17take a breather.
30:19You know what I mean?
30:20You hit him with a lot
30:20of power punches.
30:22Set him up with some jabs.
30:23Bam, bam, bam.
30:24Sneak those body shots
30:25in there on him
30:26because he's looking for it now.
30:27So you've got to sneak
30:27those body shots in on him.
30:28Okay?
30:29Okay.
30:30Jab, jab, jab.
30:31Right hand.
30:33Right hand.
30:33Maybe a left hook.
30:35Step to the man.
30:37Double, triple your jabs.
30:38Come back with the left hook.
30:39All right?
30:40Now he's dead.
30:41Now it's up to you
30:41to do what you've got to do now.
30:43The man is gone.
30:44He threw his best shot
30:46and you're still here.
30:47You're still here.
30:48All right?
30:49Come up the middle
30:50with your punches.
30:51Come up the middle
30:51with your punches.
30:52All right?
30:52Come up the middle
30:53and finish with the left hook.
30:54All right?
30:55Let's go.
30:56Now he's dead.
30:57Now let's go, baby.
30:57Alderman.
30:58Come on, baby.
31:01On this occasion,
31:02I thought that
31:03Eddie Mustafa said
31:05exactly the right thing
31:06to his fighter.
31:06He's trying to get
31:08his spirits up,
31:09trying to say,
31:09look,
31:10you're still in the fight.
31:11He's hit you
31:12his best shots.
31:13You're still here.
31:15You've got a chance.
31:16Well, you know,
31:16that's one of the
31:17oldest strategies in boxing.
31:18Fighting him back
31:19to his corner
31:19and he's dead tired
31:20and he sits down.
31:21As long as he sits down,
31:22he's trying to say,
31:23he's tired as anything.
31:34Jack Mosley told Shane
31:36not to take the round off,
31:38but he said,
31:38don't work as hard.
31:40Don't throw as many
31:41power punches.
31:42Start the boxing.
31:43That's exactly what he's doing.
31:45In the last two rounds,
31:46rounds three and four,
31:48Mosley threw more than
31:50150 power punches
31:52and landed close to 90 of them.
31:56So he did a lot of work
31:59offensively in those two rounds.
32:01Roy Jones is on record
32:02as saying that
32:02it takes just as much
32:03out of you to throw
32:04a power punch
32:05as it does to take one.
32:06There's that Southport
32:07stance again
32:08where he threw
32:09a straight left hand,
32:11staying in the Southport
32:12stance for the moment.
32:14You think he sees
32:14something there
32:15that he can do
32:16or is that just a challenge?
32:17Every time he switches
32:18to Southport,
32:19he's been very effective
32:19but you have to do that
32:22a lot in a gym.
32:24You must practice
32:25that in a gym.
32:26Landed a right uppercut
32:28and now a hard left hand
32:29across the top
32:30for Mosley.
32:33It would be another feather
32:34in his cap
32:35if he managed
32:36to finish Johnson
32:37out of the Southport
32:38stance.
32:40But now he goes
32:41back conventional.
32:43He got nailed
32:43with a pretty good
32:44right hand
32:44when he landed
32:45when he landed
32:45that left hook,
32:46Jim.
32:51Eddie Mustafa Mohammed
32:53working with
32:53Golden Johnson
32:54for the first time
32:55tonight.
32:57They've trained
32:59together for weeks
32:59obviously,
33:00but this is their
33:00first bout together
33:01asking his fighter
33:02to come up the middle
33:03with the attack
33:04like that.
33:05look at that
33:09double uppercut
33:10by Mosley.
33:11He's inventing punches
33:12in there.
33:17Great footwork
33:19to change the punching
33:20angle by Mosley
33:21and he comes back
33:22with three landed
33:23power shots.
33:24one of the things
33:33Shane Mosley
33:34does brilliantly
33:35stepping around
33:36to find punching
33:37room.
33:41The other
33:42with a pretty good
33:42left jab
33:43that time
33:43by Johnson.
33:48You know,
33:49even if he's
33:50taking a little bit
33:51off
33:51for this round,
33:53Gil,
33:53he's still
33:53impressive
33:54in what else
33:55he does.
33:55Oh,
33:55he does
33:56good things
33:57in this round
33:57that I very
33:58seldom ever seen.
34:00He changes
34:00direction.
34:05On January 25,
34:10HBO Sports
34:10presents the
34:11next edition
34:11of Real Sports
34:12with Bryant Gumbel.
34:13Among the stories
34:14to be featured,
34:15an investigation
34:16into offshore
34:16gambling operations
34:17that take in
34:18hundreds of millions
34:20of dollars
34:20in what the
34:21American government
34:22calls illegal
34:23sports bets.
34:23A report
34:24on a controversial
34:25study which
34:25asserts that
34:26one of every
34:26five NFL players
34:27has a criminal
34:28background.
34:29And a look
34:29at the grueling
34:30and often
34:30frustrating life
34:31of a National
34:32Football League
34:33assistant coach.
34:34Real Sports
34:35where nothing
34:36is out of bounds
34:37premieres Monday,
34:38January 25 at 10
34:39here on HBO.
34:40Don't let this
34:42one get away.
34:43The man ready
34:43to give it up.
34:44All right?
34:45It's yours to take.
34:46It's yours to take.
34:47You got to take it.
34:48He ain't going to give it to you.
34:49Now you go ahead and take it.
34:50Tell me what kind of nuts
34:51you got.
34:52It's nuts and guts
34:52in this air place, baby.
34:54Nuts and guts.
34:55Here we see the flurry
34:59from Mosley.
35:00You can see that
35:01he's not just a good
35:04well-schooled fighter.
35:06When he has the
35:08advantage and the
35:09opportunity,
35:10he'll just let go
35:11like a brawler.
35:13And Mosley,
35:13who had been throwing
35:14upward of 75 punches
35:16per round,
35:17brought it down to only
35:1856 attempted blows
35:19in that last round,
35:21following his father's
35:21instructions to get it
35:23a little bit under control
35:24and get a little rest.
35:26When you say he's a brawler,
35:27he's what I would call
35:28a thinking brawler
35:29because he's giving you
35:30the idea that he's just
35:32letting it all hang out.
35:33But in the meanwhile,
35:33he's moving one way
35:34or the other,
35:35getting the angle on you.
35:38I don't know if this
35:39is the first time
35:40you've seen him in person
35:41or not, Gil,
35:43but you seem very impressed
35:44by him as all of us have been.
35:47I'm very, very impressed
35:48by him.
35:48He's showing all sorts
35:49of talent in this ring.
35:53But also a kind
35:54of fighting spirit.
35:55It's not just textbook talent.
35:58I think I'm looking
35:58at a fight back
35:59in the 40s right now,
36:00that's what it looks like.
36:02You compare him
36:03to the best lightweights
36:04you've seen.
36:04Well, he looks pretty
36:05darn good to me right now.
36:08Another 20 fights or so.
36:10That would have been.
36:11And as you look around
36:12the pound-for-pound landscape,
36:14Gil, with Jones,
36:15De La Hoya, Cuarte,
36:16Trinidad, Evander Holyfield,
36:19the various other top fighters
36:20in the sport, Ricardo Lopez.
36:22Where do you put Mosley?
36:23Well, I think he has
36:24the same curse on him
36:25right now that Roy Jones has.
36:26There just isn't that
36:27great opposition out there
36:28of fights that are going
36:30to be contests for him.
36:33He's so far above
36:35the average guy.
36:37He's in there
36:37with a pretty tough guy
36:38right now.
36:38He's just more or less
36:40having a good time.
36:42One lightweight
36:43who has called out Mosley
36:45and definitely wants
36:46a match with him,
36:46Ivan Robinson,
36:47two-time conqueror
36:48of Arturo Gotti.
36:50There he goes.
36:53Larry will talk later
36:54about some of the other
36:55lightweights
36:56who might be on the horizon
36:57for Shane.
36:58He's holding too much.
37:04Left hook to the body,
37:06Mosley.
37:22Break, no pressure.
37:23Clean break.
37:24Step back.
37:24Johnson's still
37:34bouncing on his toes.
37:37Brave, committed performance
37:38by Golden Johnson.
37:41Coming off a similarly
37:42brave, committed performance
37:43against Israel Pito Cardona.
37:46Well, except that he's
37:47digging a very deep hole
37:49from himself in this fight
37:49with Cardona.
37:51The fight was up in the air
37:52until the last round.
37:53Well, Cardona doesn't have
37:54the kinds of skills
37:54that Shane Mosley has.
37:56No question about that.
37:57Who does in that weight class?
38:00Well, I think Ivan Robinson
38:02has some real skills.
38:04Ivan Robinson doesn't have
38:06just the punching power
38:07for strength.
38:09He'll hope to get a chance
38:11to prove it
38:12one way or the other.
38:14Larry, what about
38:14the landscape
38:15and the lightweight division
38:16presently ruled
38:17by Shane Mosley?
38:18Well, here's a look at
38:21the fellas out there
38:22who would like to fight
38:24Mosley.
38:24Cesar Bazaan
38:25who holds one of
38:26the titles.
38:28Good Mexican fighter.
38:29Stevie Johnson
38:29who has lost only
38:31a close decision
38:32to Bazaan
38:32and once beat
38:33Mosley in the amateurs.
38:35And Ivan Robinson
38:36who is coming off
38:38two sensational performances
38:40last year
38:42against...
38:42Arturo Gatti.
38:46Arturo Gatti.
38:47But again,
38:48it's the opposition.
38:49You don't compare
38:50Mosley and Gatti.
38:51Do you put them
38:52in the same league?
38:53No, no, I'm not.
38:54But Ivan Robinson,
38:55we've seen him three times.
38:56See the zero guys?
38:57He's put on
38:58three really good performances.
39:00Yeah, sorry to interrupt.
39:01I was pointing out the zero
39:02because we're told
39:04that's only the second time
39:05in the history of CompuBox
39:06round by round
39:08punch counting
39:09that a fighter
39:10has gone an entire round
39:11without landing a punch
39:12against Golden Johnson
39:13by CompuBox numbers.
39:150 for 30
39:15in that round.
39:17The only other time
39:18it happened,
39:19Roy Jones
39:20shutting out
39:20Vinny Pazienza
39:22over the course
39:24of a round.
39:25Harold Letterman,
39:26how about your scorecard?
39:27I didn't give
39:28the sixth round
39:29to Golden Johnson
39:30who didn't land the punch.
39:32Six to nothing,
39:3360 to 52,
39:34Sugar Shane Mosley.
39:35Jim, I gotta tell you,
39:36one of the things
39:36that drives the eye
39:37of boxing judges
39:38all the time
39:39is the guy
39:39that gets off first.
39:41I mean,
39:41and Shane Mosley
39:42does this beautifully.
39:43Effective aggressiveness,
39:44he always throws
39:45that first punch
39:46and Golden Johnson
39:47has hit so hard
39:47he can't count them.
39:51Golden Johnson
39:52is in retreat now.
39:54It looks as though
39:55he is now
39:56trying to find
39:57a way to survive
39:58that Mosley
39:59has beaten
40:00him out of the idea
40:02that he can win
40:03the fight.
40:03Yeah, I think
40:04he'd like to get
40:04out of there gracefully.
40:06Johnson for his brave
40:09and committed performance.
40:10His bravery
40:11and commitment
40:11waned precipitously.
40:13Well, he's very game,
40:14but he's so overmatched
40:16talent-wise.
40:19Not hard, boys.
40:20Talent-wise.
40:23Johnson just got a chance
40:25to land the punch there
40:26by CompuBox.
40:28Observations,
40:29the first time
40:29in more than four minutes
40:30that Golden Johnson
40:31had landed a punch
40:32against Mosley.
40:33Mosley willing
40:34to give his body
40:35as he digs away
40:36at Johnson's ribcage.
40:42Johnson is still
40:42punching back.
40:44Have to give him credit.
40:50Great!
40:52Pattern with Shane Mosley
40:54round after round
40:55of body punishment
40:56until he makes
40:57the man surrender.
41:02Beautiful look
41:03took to the body
41:04again.
41:05Oh, what a right cross.
41:07And Johnson
41:08badly hurt
41:09goes down
41:09on the second right cross.
41:12The first one
41:13was a beauty.
41:14Six, three, three,
41:16eight, four,
41:18five, five, five, five,
41:20five, five, five, six,
41:21you know,
41:21this is the time
41:22I think
41:22where the corner
41:23has to start thinking
41:24of this kid
41:25has still got a career
41:26inside of himself.
41:27Absolutely.
41:28If I was in the corner,
41:29the fight would be over.
41:30Johnson coming back
41:41with a right hand
41:42to stop Mosley
41:43momentarily in his tracks,
41:44but here comes
41:45Sugar Shane again.
41:48Johnson really is taking
41:49a beating now.
41:50goes down on a body punch
41:53for the third time
41:54in the battle.
41:56Please stay there,
41:57Golden.
41:59He did never let the referee
42:00take a good look at him.
42:02Nine, ten.
42:04Smart play.
42:06Smart play
42:06by Golden Johnson
42:07who had no chance
42:09to win the fight
42:10and knew it.
42:14You'll be back
42:15another day, kid.
42:17Well, he gave a
42:18satisfactory performance,
42:19I have to say that.
42:20Yep.
42:21He did everything
42:22he could
42:22against a super
42:24superior fighter,
42:26Shane Mosley.
42:37Okay.
42:38Mona is definitely
42:38in the house.
42:39They got all my fans
42:40to watch them.
42:41Hey, it's another one.
42:4231-0, 29 knockouts.
42:45He knows his record.
42:50Here's another look
42:51at the first knockdown,
42:52and there's that
42:53first right cross
42:54that set it up.
42:56Golden Johnson
42:57still bobbing at that point.
42:58The second right cross
42:59put him down.
42:59He never stopped
43:01with the shot.
43:01He said.
43:02He said.
43:03He said.
43:03He said.
43:04He said.
43:04He said.
43:04He said.
43:04He said.
43:04He said.
43:05He said.
43:05He said.
43:06He said.
43:06He said.
43:06He said.
43:06He said.
43:06He said.
43:06He said.
43:07He said.
43:07He said.
43:07He said.
43:07He said.
43:08And Gil, what about
43:10the way Moseley
43:10puts punches together
43:11when he's ready to finish?
43:12I can't find any
43:14fall with Moseley at all.
43:15And watch this
43:16left hook to the body.
43:17He's going to go down
43:17again for that
43:18left hook to the body.
43:19That was his most
43:20effective punch
43:20the entire fight.
43:22That left hook underneath.
43:23Well, he scored
43:23three separate knockdowns
43:25with double left hooks
43:26and left hooks
43:27to the body.
43:28One knockdown
43:28on the right cross.
43:29Of course,
43:30the punishment
43:30in round three
43:31was set up
43:31by a brilliant
43:32right uppercut.
43:34You saw the left hook
43:34upstairs as well
43:35several times.
43:37Shane Moseley,
43:38a fighter with
43:38every conceivable
43:40weapon.
43:41I would have to say so.
43:42He showed me
43:43just about
43:43everything tonight,
43:45including switching
43:46to Southcourt,
43:48giving me
43:48the impression
43:50that he was really
43:50brawling.
43:51He knew where he was
43:52all the time
43:52in this fight.
43:53Now let's go to
43:54ring announcer Mark Barrow
43:55for the official
43:55particulars on
43:56Moseley's 29th KO.
43:58Ladies and gentlemen,
44:02the time,
44:04two minutes,
44:0559 seconds
44:06of the seventh round,
44:08the winner
44:09by knockout
44:10and still
44:12IBF
44:13lightweight champion
44:14of the world,
44:16Sugar
44:16Shane
44:18Moseley.
44:25Hit the chair for this
44:26matchup.
44:27Okay, Tammy.
44:32Okay, you kids get down.
44:34Y'all got to get down.
44:35There you go.
44:36Woo!
44:38Okay, let me do it.
44:40Shane,
44:41let me stand right here.
44:42Come down, come down.
44:43Right here in the middle.
44:44Final punch stat numbers.
44:46I got it.
44:47Utterly one-sided.
44:49It was the sixth round
44:50in which Golden Johnson
44:51went 0 for 30,
44:52didn't land the punch.
44:53So Moseley
44:55lands almost
44:56as many punches
44:57as Johnson
44:58is able to throw.
45:00Throws 222 more
45:02than Golden Johnson.
45:03Lands 202 more
45:05and doubles him
45:06in connect percentage.
45:07The power punch numbers
45:08will be
45:09equally one-sided.
45:10You see them there.
45:1161% connection
45:13on power punch
45:14for Moseley.
45:15And, of course,
45:16every body shot
45:17is a power punch.
45:19Let's go to Larry Merchant
45:20with the winner.
45:21Congratulations, Shane.
45:23Golden Johnson
45:23came over to you
45:24a moment ago
45:25and said
45:26you're a great champion.
45:28What does that make you
45:29feel like
45:30to have an opponent
45:31recognize that?
45:33Well, I think that's good.
45:34I mean, he's giving me credit.
45:35You know,
45:35he fought very hard.
45:37I fought hard.
45:38And, you know,
45:39that's what happened.
45:40But I think Golden Johnson
45:41is very strong and durable.
45:42He's still young
45:43and he's certainly
45:44going to have another opportunity
45:45probably at the title
45:45later on
45:46in his professional career.
45:49The body punch
45:50is obviously
45:51is what set up
45:52this victory.
45:53Were you looking
45:54for that
45:54from the beginning
45:55or has that just
45:56come naturally
45:57as the fight evolves?
45:59It comes naturally
45:59but I also
46:00I watched
46:01Pichot Cardona
46:03go to the body.
46:04I noticed
46:04that we can
46:04jounce a lot
46:06and Pichot couldn't
46:06get him out
46:07with headshots
46:07and we know
46:08that Pichot's
46:08a hard head puncher.
46:10So I said
46:11okay, I'm going
46:11to go to the body then.
46:13Let's take a quick
46:14look at the future.
46:15Ivan Robinson
46:17has called you out
46:19says you're not
46:20all of that great.
46:20I want Ivan.
46:21He wants to fight you?
46:22I want you Ivan.
46:23I want you next.
46:24April or May.
46:25Let's get our schedules
46:26together and let's do this.
46:27What about
46:27what about Cesar Bazan
46:29who also says
46:31he would like to fight you
46:32the Mexican champion?
46:33Well, we want both of them.
46:34I want Ivan first
46:35and then we can
46:35Cesar Bazan in there next.
46:37I want you too.
46:38I want all the
46:38best lightweights out there.
46:40Step forward
46:41let's get it on.
46:42Thank you very much.
46:43You do get it on.
46:45Jim?
46:45Okay.
46:47And there's the
46:48victory celebration
46:49for Shane Mosley
46:50and his contingent
46:52from Pomona, California.
46:55Judges up to this point
46:56in the bout
46:56just like Harold Letterman
46:58all three judges
46:59I'm told
47:00scoring it as a shutout
47:02for Mosley
47:02to that point
47:03and indeed
47:04Harold's scorecard
47:06was completely in sync
47:07with those of
47:07all three judges
47:09at ringside.
47:10We'll have more
47:10later on
47:11when Roy Jones
47:12gets ready to take on
47:1339-year-old
47:14New York policeman
47:15Rick Frazier
47:16in a defense of
47:17Jones' light heavyweight championship
47:18but right now
47:19let's look ahead
47:20to one of the biggest
47:21upcoming bouts
47:22on the calendar
47:23February 13 in Las Vegas
47:24the biggest test
47:25of Oscar De La Hoya's career
47:27as he gets ready
47:28to fight
47:29unbeaten
47:30welterweight champion
47:31from Ghana
47:32Ike Quartey
47:33and Ike
47:34lives and trains
47:35much of the time
47:36here in Pensacola
47:37so he joins us live
47:39here at ringside
47:39tonight
47:40I'm assisted by
47:41Fred Asifo
47:42who speaks Ike's
47:43native Ghanaian language
47:44of Gah
47:45but Ike's been living
47:46so much in Pensacola
47:47that his English
47:47is getting a whole lot
47:48better as he gets
47:49ready to fight
47:49De La Hoya
47:50because you didn't
47:51take a tune-up bout
47:52and because
47:53De La Hoya
47:54cited an injury
47:56in training
47:56to delay this bout
47:57which was originally
47:58scheduled for November
47:59you're going to come
48:00into the ring
48:00not having fought
48:02in more than a year
48:03does that concern
48:04you at all
48:05Ike?
48:06No
48:06that doesn't
48:06concern at all
48:07because
48:07everybody knows
48:09who I am
48:09and what I can do
48:10that's concern
48:11if I fight for a year
48:12I can handle
48:13Oscar easily
48:14well
48:15you say
48:16everybody knows
48:16what you're going to do
48:17you've overpowered
48:19most of your opponents
48:20in the past
48:20with your strength
48:21and your terrific jab
48:22are you expecting
48:23to go out
48:24and dominate
48:24De La Hoya
48:25with your jab?
48:26the same thing
48:26going to happen
48:26in February 13
48:27I'm going to
48:28wear him down
48:29with my jab
48:29and then
48:30I do what I got to do
48:31how big is this fight
48:33in your life?
48:34this is the biggest
48:34fight in my life
48:35people think
48:36this is the toughest fight
48:37but I don't think
48:38this fight is tough
48:39because Oscar is not tough
48:40but this is a big fight
48:41for me
48:41because Oscar is big
48:42in America
48:42do you think
48:43American fight fans
48:44know who you are
48:45and realize how big
48:47a challenge this is
48:48for Oscar?
48:48I think they know
48:49who I am
48:50and what I can do
48:51I think they know
48:52I'm the best
48:54147
48:56up there
48:57so they know
48:58what I can do
48:58you train in the same gym
49:00as Roy Jones
49:02although I'm told
49:03your workouts
49:04are at different times
49:05but have you spoken
49:06to Roy
