01:26Well, Roy has called himself a great athlete who happens to be a boxer.
01:31Mosley may be a great fighter who just happens to be an athlete.
01:35Roy Jones is a one-of-a-kind, unorthodox original.
01:39He uses digital speed to bewilder and beat conventional opponents.
01:45Mosley tries to break down and take out his opponents
01:50with a classic boxer-puncher style and his own fiery spirit.
01:57What he hasn't shown yet is whether he can move up in weight,
02:01as Roy has, and be just as successful.

02:05We're about to see what Mosley can do against a slick welterweight,
02:09the complete opposite of the kind of guy he fought in his first welterweight assignment.
02:12Here's the tale of the tape.
02:13Shane has a four-year age advantage against Willie Wise,
02:16who quite realistically says to us,
02:18maybe I have one more year left in boxing.
02:21The job is to make as many dollars out of it as I can.
02:24They're equal in height.
02:25Six-and-a-half-inch reach advantage for Mosley.
02:28They agreed to weigh in one pound over the limit at 148 pounds
02:32for this 10-round non-title fight.
02:34As they enter the ring tonight,
02:36Mosley's gained six pounds and Wise five since the weigh-in yesterday.

02:44The Shane Mosley-Willie Wise fight is scheduled for 10 rounds.
02:47And Jim, you know, we usually tell you it's the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
02:51Nevada has decided to use the rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.

02:57No three-knock-down rule.
02:58Only the referee can stop the fight,
03:00and it cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
03:03including the 10th and final round.

03:05All right, Harold, the feel-good story of the year in boxing last year
03:09was Willie Wise's stunning upset victory over Julio Cesar Chavez in October.
03:16The feel-good story because of what it did for Wise financially
03:20and what it set up for him tonight.
03:22After he beat Chavez, Jim,
03:26he took his gloves and has Chavez autographed them,
03:29which has to be an original idea.
03:33And before that, he had fought a very good fight
03:36and lost a close split decision to Darryl Coley,
03:39a number one contender who was going to fight after De La Hoya late in February.
03:44Now, the financial implication is that Willie has a five-year-old son named Dominique
03:49who has a very rare disorder called Chronic Seizure Syndrome.
03:55But because of the medical difficulties his son has faced over the course of his five years,
03:59Wise entered the ring against Chavez deeply in debt.
04:03He's still in debt as he arrives here tonight,
04:06but the paycheck he gets for this fight will bail him out, Larry.
04:09Exactly. We'll take a closer look at him.
04:14Between flights, he is a forklift operator at $9 an hour
04:18so that he can keep that medical insurance.
04:22The $175,000 purse tonight, after everybody else gets their share,
04:27will enable him to pay off those medical bills that have been accumulating.
04:33So a triumph of sorts already for Wise,
04:36but he's not satisfied with that.
04:39He says, look, I've got other guys to tell me about Mosley.
04:43I didn't even look at his fights.
04:44I just go in there to box and do the best I can do.
04:47Now, here comes Sugar Shade.
04:52The pride of Pomona, California,
04:55only recently adopted by Southern California media and fans
05:01after a long tour of duty, fighting Mosley on the East Coast.
05:05They hardly recognized him until he was named Fighter of the Year in 1998.
05:13And a closer look at the unbeaten Sugar Shade Mosley.
05:17His very first fight in Las Vegas after nine straight KOs,
05:22eight of them in defense of his lightweight title,
05:25and there's been reported a $7.5 million offer to stage a fight with De La Hoya
05:32in the Staples Center, the new arena in Los Angeles.

08:47I can't really see it.
08:49And now that Shane is up in the world to a division,
08:52that would be a close race between he and Renfrois
08:54for who would be the best boxer in the ring, skill-wise.
08:58The big problem facing Wise here,
09:08in the view of most,
09:10is that there's just nothing in his arsenal
09:12in terms of punching power,
09:14or danger, or aggressiveness,
09:16no weapon to keep Mosley off of him,
09:19should Shane choose to be aggressive.
09:20Yeah, but sometimes speed and quickness
09:22can keep a guy off of him,
09:23and Wise already shows some real nice quickness here.
09:27Keeps his head up a little bit, though,
09:30and Mosley reaches up there with the chopping right hand.
09:33Yeah, if he keeps the head up like that,
09:34he's going to get caught.
09:41And Shane seems already to be interested in that target

14:35landed the punch that brought wise to the canvas after halford had asked him to break
14:43it happened very fast and halford's back was too wise and he's calling the doctor in now
14:50to have a look at him does he get five minutes to recover harold
15:05i don't think i've ever seen two points taken away from a fighter
15:19i'm not saying that it isn't the rules i said i have never seen it
15:24so mosley gets a two-point deduction in the second round of the fight
15:28after having a 10-8 round most likely in the first
15:36jane feels like he can get an early knockout tonight and he wants it
15:41shane i don't know what i feel like that
15:45he seems to be hurting wise with every big punch everything he touches them with
15:49that's where that speed comes into play because if you don't see it coming
15:54another hard body shot drives wise back and another hard body shot with the right hand

16:16this is the danger of following your corner's orders to try to be first
16:19you get a sense now of how little chavez had left last fall when he fought against willie wise
16:32wise basically battered chavez from pillar to post
16:35one thing to battle our old veteran but it's another thing to catch a warrior in his prime a young
16:42strong lion like mosley
16:54but i'm just glad to see willie wise get the opportunity here oh and it's great to see him
16:58get out of debt and be able to pay off his doctor bills that's a victory for everybody
17:03wise badly wobbled by a right hand as the second round came to a close
17:09but he won that round as two points were taken away from mosley
17:19here comes the replay line
17:23close quarters wise trying to make something happen the left hook hurts him
17:27referee jumps in now i didn't think that was a foul but i didn't think it was a deliberate foul
17:45and when you look at it at real speed it was a reflexive action for mosley that
17:50he should have been penalized for i wonder whether it should have been two points
17:55i don't think it figures to matter much yeah i don't think it'll matter much here in the future
18:02i think of the reflexes of roy jones accidentally hitting montel griffin when griffin was down
18:07and resulting in a disqualification awfully hard to pull the punch once your reflex says go that's right
18:16and obviously shane mosley has fabulous reflexes
18:20in round two mosley threw 47 punches and landed 30 of them
18:28several of them hurt wise including a right hand just before the bell

19:05mosley goes right back at it because he believed he had wives in trouble there before the slip
19:11well i did hit over the clean punch on the slip but it wasn't knocked down
19:14as i was saying mosley learned the value of body shot sparring with
19:22tough mexican fighters in the gyms of los angeles
19:34jane mosley was rated number one in the world in his weight class and was favored to go to the
19:38olympics and win a gold medal in 1992 before his apple cart was upset at the united states olympic
19:44trials by bernan forest the fighter you saw in the preceding fight yesterday when we asked for us
19:50about that in anticipation of a possible match up down the road between these two forests said that
19:55was a long time ago it's not worth talking about now wise in trouble again his legs wobbling as mosley attacks
20:03i think mosley caught himself a knock down there by pushing wise too hard i agree with you jimmy
20:13got a little over excited for a veteran fighter could have taken his time broken him down
20:20every time he touches wise wise goes down he just touched wise in a wild go about again i think wise
20:26wanted to take a knee and now he is totally crumpled by a right hand and halpern says that's enough
20:32that will do it and there's a knockout win for shane mosley in the third round of his second welterweight
20:40fight once again the kind of dramatic statement even though it was made at the expense of a journeyman
20:50fighter that jane mosley continues to make in making his case for a shot at oscar delahue or felix trinidad
21:02and what fight fans have to love you know at the risk of being repetitive he's a finisher roy oh yes
21:08he's a big finisher remember we said earlier that what jane mosley does is he tries to break down
21:14and take out his opponents bigger things down the road for shane mosley and his dad
21:24trainer manager jack mosley big smiles tonight in their first fight ever in las vegas
21:36all right roy let's look at these replays here's what was called a slip early in the round
21:41that overhand right right there hurt him and that hurt him again he was definitely through it
21:48and that body shot really is what would have taken him down jim and they called that a slip i think
21:53wise was hurt as you pointed out by every power punch the body shots hurt him a lot and everything
21:59mosley landed over the top wobbled it right there there's another shot that knocked him down that was
22:05clearly a knockdown the referee couldn't see it and here's the end of the fight which yields a big
22:10right hand across the top after the body shot that was a good head butt too exactly right right on the
22:16front of the forehead but at that point it didn't matter so um does this tell us something about
22:22mosley's punching power moving up to 147 it tells you that he sustained the same punch of power that
22:26he had when he was fighting at 130 he didn't lose any power he didn't lose any speed and i think this is
22:31beautiful i think this is going to make for a great match up with some of the big fighters in this
22:35movement is norwich i totally agree let's go to michael buffer for the official particulars
22:41ladies and gentlemen referee mitch halpern calls a halt to the spout at two minutes and 28 seconds of
22:48the third round winning his debut here in las vegas and winning his 34th about his 34th victory

23:12final punch stat numbers and you'll see total dominance by mosley who landed i think pretty
23:18close to two-thirds of his punches yep 77 out of 124 against 13 of 80 it was totally no contest
23:2510th consecutive knockout for sugar shane eight of them in the lightweight division now two straight
23:30knockouts to begin his tour of duty in the welterweight division and those who have been
23:35trying to promote the idea of a mosley delaware about in los angeles have a brand new piece of
23:41ammunition for their argument larry murteth with the winner all right thank you jim uh congratulations
23:48shane we've been here before um you feel that you need to make these kinds of the dramatic statements in
23:56order to get a fight for the title that you're looking for from an oscar de la hoya or a felix
24:03trinidad uh yeah i think that you know i gotta let the welterweight division know that i mean business
24:08you know i have pin power but that's not the focus that i was trying to do i felt that i was stronger
24:13than him so that's why i stepped it up on him when i hit him with a couple of shots he fell
24:17kind of quick and i was like wow you know and every shot i hit him with it was hurting him
24:22so i said okay well i better go ahead and step it up and start power punching more because before you
24:26know i kind of came out and started boxing a little bit started vibing and weave a little more trying
24:30to get into the groove you know but uh you know willie wise he's a boxer also so it's hard for me to
24:35you know actually make him uh get into the fight with me what have you learned from your first two
24:40fights in the welterweight division well i learned that i have good hitting power in the welterweight division
24:45and that i can't hurt these welterweights you're not moving up to middleweight soon then you know
24:49what i think my next fight is going to be at middleweight no i'm just joking i'm just joking
24:53no i'm gonna stay at welterweight i want to make a statement in the welterweight division and then you
24:57know i think that'd be my ultimate division from there i'll probably go to 54 maybe later on three or
25:02four years from now were you surprised that you had two points taken away from you for that punch
25:08in the second round i was very surprised because you know he hit me the referee told him break and then he
25:13hit me in the stomach after the break and then and i swung back it's like reaction you know and
25:18i really i missed him i didn't even hit him with the shot i grazed him and then he he acted he acted
25:23like he got hit but he really did i didn't even hit him with the shot i didn't even hit him behind me
25:29all right there is a low lever clamor in los angeles for you to fight oscar de la hoya in los angeles
25:39what are your feelings about that oh you know i have never i haven't talked to bob barram or hbo
25:45anybody we never sat at the table yet to talk about this june 17th fight but i'll be happy to
25:49fight june 17th all i want to do is sit down at the table and you know learn more about it you know
25:54what's my what's gonna be my pay you know i i mean i don't know anything you know all i know is they
26:00have it on on the radios and on and papers saying that shane's fighting oscar june 17th it's a done deal
26:05i haven't talked to anybody at me or my father so i want to be able to talk to somebody so i can
26:09know how much i'm getting paid and uh that's all i asked for but june 17 what is the offer i don't
26:15even know the offer pay yet right so to cut to cut through it is you want to fight him if the deal
26:21can be worked out if the deal can be worked out and you know i can get proper pay do you think you've
26:27had enough experience in the welterweight division to take on the top fighters in the division
26:34why i think i proved it here tonight i mean this guy willie wise went the distance with daryl coley
26:39and a lot of people thought one judge had willie wise win the fight against daryl coley and it went
26:44to school 12 and he just beat chavez so by me coming in here making this dramatic uh you know this
26:49dramatic effort and knocking him out and this it was just a spectacular show i think that i show a
26:55tremendous amount of power in my punches and you know yes i think that i deserve uh adamant pay when i fight
27:01de la jolla quickly uh since you and vernon forest go way back did you see the first fight earlier
27:08and what did you think of uh vernon's uh showing i did not get a chance to see vernon fight um i
27:14didn't have a monitor in my room but i heard that uh he outboxed uh vincent phillips pretty well i
27:19have to go back and look at the tapes and you know i know versus is a tremendous fighter and uh you
27:24know he went to the olympics so he is he does deserve uh just do and maybe fight for world title maybe you
27:30could fight james peter with a ba title and that would be a good enough title but right now you
27:34know the what's on the plate for me is oscar de la jolla thank you so much shane mosley so uh finally
27:41this word a week ago we were in radio city music hall an art deco palace seemed to me that uh boxing was
27:53like a mutt being taken for a walk through buckingham palace tonight we were back in a rock palace a kind
28:02of marsh pit called the joint i think this is where boxing really belongs jim larry totally unaware of
28:13the rest of the picture there and struggling through anyway all right roy suppose they can make mosley
28:19de la oia june 17 in los angeles any reason for this guy to wait or does he go right ahead no no
28:25reason for him to wait what is he going to wait on yeah how much bigger of a fight can he get than
28:29oscar de la oia there's uh there's a rumor you heard him talking about money there's a rumor that
28:34the offer is going to amount to something like four million dollars there's a rumor that his dad jack
28:37mosley doesn't think that's enough i i personally can't imagine that they would pass up this opportunity
28:43quibbling over a half million or a million bucks i don't know you know you never know what and you
28:47don't want to do other people's business right right so i can't really say what he's taking i
28:50mean he'll take what he thinks is fair for him if he doesn't think it's fair for him then you know
28:54he won't take it all right very quickly your broken hand what does that mean to uh the immediate
28:58future of your career and when do you expect to be back in the ring i expect to be back in action
29:02about may uh broken hand as you saw cannot stop me nothing can stop me when i want to do something
29:07so come may somebody else will be in a lot of trouble all right we'll look forward to seeing that again
