Orlin Norris defends his WBA Cruiserweight Title against King Arthur Williams on Showtime Championship Boxing

00:00:14So here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, coming up next, our main event as Orla Norris meets King Arthur Williams for the WBA Cruiserweight Championship.

00:00:25Norris told us just yesterday he'd like to get Williams in a street fight right from the opening bell.

00:00:34Well, Orla Norris fought his first 33 fights as a heavyweight, which included two stretches as NAVF champion.

00:00:41The first stint lasted over two years and included wins over Greg Page and Ronaldo Snipes.

00:00:47But a title shot against Mike Tyson was derailed when he lost to Burt Cooper in 1990.

00:00:51Norris' second reign as NAVF heavyweight champ was short-lived.

00:00:56One month later, he lost the belt to Tony Tucker.

00:00:59But following the Tucker fight, Norris trimmed merely 20 pounds to campaign as a cruiserweight.

00:01:04And he's undefeated in his last ten fights, winning the vacant NAVF Cruiserweight title along the way.

00:01:09When Bobby Chez was unable to defend the WBA Cruiserweight title due to an injured back,

00:01:14Norris, the number one contender, received his first world title shot.

00:01:18This past November 6th, Orla Norris captured the vacant WBA Cruiserweight Championship

00:01:23with a sixth-round knockout of Marcello Figueroa in France.

00:01:28So, while Orla Norris has held the WBA Cruiserweight title for just about four months,

00:01:34let's take a look at the other world champions in the division.

00:01:37The longest-reigning cruiserweight champ is Anaclet Wamba, king of the WBC.

00:01:42Alfred Cole, the IVF title holder, is second, followed by the newly crowned champion Orlin Norris.

00:01:47All right, we're back with the fight, Dr. Ferdi Pacheco,

00:01:52who has ably extricated himself from that chaos in the ring.

00:01:57And Ferdi, can Norris or one of the other world champions dominate the division the way Evander Holyfield did?

00:02:03I don't think so, because this division started as a lame-duck division.

00:02:06This was a division where they didn't know what to put you.

00:02:09You were too big for light-heavyweight, you weren't big enough for heavyweight.

00:02:11They invented the cruiserweight, and there was nobody in there.

00:02:13And then all of a sudden, it filled up.

00:02:14There's three good champions now.

00:02:16Norris is the best of the three champions,

00:02:18but there's two marquee fighters standing there that are just as good as everybody.

00:02:21And one of them is my friend Bobby Chez, and the other one is Hearns.

00:02:25And Tommy Hearns and Bobby Chez together make a sizzling marquee fight.

00:02:30That's where they're headed.

00:02:31And so all of a sudden, the division that was a desert of fighters

00:02:34now has five fighters that are interesting to watch.

00:02:37So I think the cruiserweights have come into their own finally in the 90s.

00:02:41All right, since Bobby Chez is still active in this division,

00:02:44how do you evaluate the talent pool?

00:02:47Well, Steve, when I'm 100% everything being together,

00:02:49I still think I'm the best cruiserweight in the world,

00:02:51and I believe I can prove that somewhere down the road.

00:02:53But I think Orlan Norris is right behind me.

00:02:55He's, like I said, a great fighter with all the skills, the tools, hungry, and disciplined.

00:02:59Al Cole is somewhere behind him, and Anaclet Wamba still, I believe, untested

00:03:03because he's stayed over in Europe, stayed away from some of America's top fighters.

00:03:07The rest of the division is somewhere down the line,

00:03:09but always lurking in the wings, trying to prove me wrong.

00:03:12Campaigning as a cruiserweight now is the ever-present Tommy Hearn.

00:03:15And while we're on the subject, who do you plan to fight next?

00:03:18I would love for the fight to be Tommy Hearn sometime in the summer.

00:03:21If things happen that I need to take another tune-up

00:03:23or work my way into another world championship first, so be it.

00:03:26My back is about 65%, 70%.

00:03:29We're still working on it, getting it together.

00:03:31I'm just looking to fight again.

00:03:32I love talking with you guys, but I've got to get back to what I love first.

00:03:42who will soon make his first defense of the WBA cruiserweight title

00:03:45against Arthur Williams.

00:03:47This fight is so important to me because, you know, first of all,

00:03:58it's my first title defense, and, you know, Arthur Williams is the number one contender,

00:04:03and, you know, I always want to fight the best.

00:04:05I work hard to come this far, you know, and I feel like it's important for me to win this fight.

00:04:15They underestimate me right now, you know, and I don't like that.

00:04:19You know, they're not giving me enough credit, you know, that I reserve.

00:04:23I feel like I'm using no better than I, you know, he's got a belt.

00:04:27My strategy when I step in the ring is to make him do what I want him to do.

00:04:32I feel like I'm more powerful than him, and he don't want to get into no mixed fight with me.

00:04:39When I want him to throw his right hand, he's going to throw it.

00:04:42When I want him to stop throwing it, I'll hit him and make him stop throwing it right hand.

00:04:46He don't know what he's talking about, you know.

00:04:48He think he's going to dictate the fight, but I don't think so, you know,

00:04:52because I will be, you know, like, I'll smarten him whatever he tries to do.

00:04:58You know, I feel like I will dominate the fight.

00:05:01No, I don't mind trading with anybody in the cruiserweight division

00:05:04because, like everybody else feels, I feel that I'm the strongest one in the division.

00:05:08I predict a very tough fight for as long as it lasts.

00:05:12If it goes into the later rounds, a painful fight for Arthur Williams, you know,

00:05:17and with me coming up to victory.

00:05:20If I threw a right hand, which is my best right hand that I threw, he's going down.

00:05:26I'm looking forward to being the next cruiserweight champion in the world, you know.

00:05:29That's where I look at it right now.

00:05:32You know, it's a dream, you know, and I'm going to make it come true.

00:06:31Originally from Pensacola, Florida, now lives right here in Las Vegas.

00:06:38Picked up his top ranking by hosting 11 straight victories, 9 by knocking.

00:06:43Picked up his top ranking by hosting 12 KOs.

00:07:13Number one contender, Arthur Williams, 29 years old,

00:07:32currently the reigning U.S.B.A. Cruiserweight champion,

00:07:35former Florida Golden Gloves champion,

00:07:37who later went on to become the 1983 Junior Olympic champion,

00:07:40an 83 World Amateur Junior Heavyweight title holder,

00:07:44an illustrious amateur career.

00:07:48And here is the champion, 28-year-old Orlin Norris,

00:07:52born in Lubbock, Texas, living in San Diego, California.

00:16:26But you see what does happen?

00:16:27I mean, with those little tiny short arms they're on his guy, he's ringing, and he's a mile away from this guy.

00:16:35When he's so tall, he leaned back, he couldn't get to him.

00:16:37He's going to give him some respect for that very reason, that right hand.

00:16:41And he's leaping a little bit.

00:16:42But when he has to do his work, his win behind a good jab, work the body, and come up.

00:16:45And that's what Norris is doing, going to the body of Williams.

00:16:48He said, I want to get Williams into a brawl right from the start.

00:16:51If he boxes me and stays out, wild missed by Norris, the fight will last longer, but eventually I'll catch him.

00:17:05I think if I was fighting this man, I'd be a little bit more interested in calling fight because what you've got to see here is the small size dictates what Orlin Norris has got to be.

00:17:16He's got to come in under that jab and under that punch, make him fight in close.

00:17:19And Arthur Williams has got to stay outside, pop, pop, and drop the right hand when he can.

00:17:26That's what they've been practicing, that right hand.

00:17:28Well, what Williams is doing right now that I like is he's not using a lot of energy.

00:17:31He's using a light jab.

00:17:32He's landed a couple of decent right hands.

00:17:34He's basically keeping Norris at the distance.

00:17:39You know, that looks worse than it really was.

00:17:42Well, he's got to work his way in, and he's trying to do a big punch.

00:17:45That was silly on the part of Arthur Williams.

00:17:46He tried to do some kind of Arthur, some kind of alley move, and it just didn't work.

00:17:50I mean, he looks just amateurish.

00:17:52Well, in all due respect to Bobby Chez, the Cruiserweight division has never really become a high-profile weight class,

00:17:59although it seems like Norris, Hearns, and Chez are helpful.

00:18:02But because of its low profile, Orlin Norris says he hopes to return to the heavyweight division,

00:18:07which, of course, translates into bigger paydays and bigger beatings.

00:18:10I can't see how a little guy like this can be in the heavyweight.

00:19:46kind of a, like, up against the ropes, like he, he, he, he thought the ropes were a lot

00:19:52So he, he looked sloppy.

00:20:14Something that's indicative of most of boxing's better finishers, and they hurt him in, in

00:20:18the end of a round, and they will come out and see just how well he has been able to recover.

00:20:30I spent a lot of time with Stacey yesterday, and he assured me that the right hand that

00:20:35had been working on his dynamite, that he was going to be throwing it, but so far I haven't

00:20:37seen any evidence of the strength of the right hand of Arthur Williams to keep off Orlin

00:20:39Morris.

00:20:40And if he doesn't keep off, he's going to be eating a lot of blue leather.

00:20:42That's what Norris told us.

00:20:43He'd be on the lookout for that right hand, but there it is.

00:20:44There it is.

00:20:45It's the first time we've actually seen it from Williams.

00:20:46See, Orlin's got a pretty good defense, too.

00:20:47Because he is so short and squat and tightly put together, he doesn't have to move his arms

00:20:50a long way to block most of the punches.

00:20:51And he stays and hides behind his left very well.

00:20:52Better than people can credit for him.

00:20:53That defense is very good, Bobby.

00:20:54And for that exact reason you said he's so compact and little, he's got a little area to defend

00:20:58and he defends it very well by crossing his gloves in front of him, he's good.

00:24:27weakness now it's something that can be a big change in this fight look at the way he stepped it up

00:24:33me Norris thinks I'm not gonna be a victim of the showtime first I'm gonna come on and finish this

00:24:39guy off he is winning some shots and obviously a sense of urgency due to that cut left hooks by

00:24:46Norris is picking up the pace there's a little bit of desperation in his eyes you can see the blood

00:24:59is coming down into his eye but he's very focused I don't think it's any problem yet but we have a

00:25:03long way to go there's a good right hand right there's a good series of combinations and then

00:25:10land real hard but there's a lot on Norris comes back though you can see him wipe away the blood

00:25:15it's gonna bother him a bit over the course of time there's something that Norris is doing well

00:25:19is neutralizing the right hand he's forcing himself to come forward when Williams throws that right

00:25:24hand and leans backwards takes an immense amount of power away from him

00:25:27as long as Arthur Williams keeps this up it'll take one big shot to neutralize all that as far as

00:25:45points are concerned well right now we see the heavier hands live with the juice but Williams is

00:25:50holding his own and this is early in a fight that can be very filled with changing strategies with that cut

00:25:54he's going to attack he's talking but he's getting hit while he's talking and that's where the

00:26:06points are now is a real good right hand miss but that was the kind he's got whatever there's a

00:26:10combination by Norris

00:26:12it's kind of a point jab by Williams not having much effect on Norris he seems to be using it as a range

00:26:27finder and that kind of stay away from the kind of jab and a point building because every time that

00:26:32thing will land at the point I mean you know that's toward your point

00:26:35he got Williams off balance and trying to go in for it but Williams recovered

00:26:42the eye seems to be holding up okay now for Norris

00:26:49attention but it doesn't seem to have affected him in any major way

00:31:52let's take a look at the norris jab while it's Williams is doing most of the jabbing

00:31:57the effective jabbing was by orland norris here

00:32:03the mouthpiece flies i think maybe a little bit more because he hasn't seen that

00:32:07that's just kind of a a bobble and his mouth is open that wasn't it didn't fly out because of the punch

00:32:13so we progress on to the next round and uh i have orland norris with a slight edge right now

00:32:20he's slightly ahead uh you know the fight got a little bit better as Williams had a good round

00:32:25boxed orland he held a couple of rounds close and they're real close rounds very difficult

00:32:30with a couple of extra punches by Williams and a couple of big bombs by norris some of it's going

00:32:34to be real subjective well norris plans to unify the cruiserweight towel then move back up to heavyweight

00:32:42but he's got the king arthur williams in front of him he can't be looking at it close

00:32:50on his corner king arthur williams felt he won that and to do exactly the same thing they were satisfied

00:32:56with that round and you know he might have won it you can't tell the way the judges look at this

00:33:01well i'll tell you again i think what uh williams has to do is when when norris opens up and swings and

00:33:07leaps there's no way to cover that he's got a set he's got to just bite down on the bullet and fire

00:33:13he did that a couple of times right after you said that but he missed his punch had to hit the punch

00:33:17then like you say one fourth meeting another's devastating he just missed it it's the first title shot for

00:33:24arthur williams in the black trunks or the norris with his first defense of the wva cruiserweight

00:33:41they joke that the tough one in the family was not dead orland senior there's a right hand by orland

00:34:23you see nor scoring a couple himself and as he comes forward he lands more cleanly with the shots

00:34:28which makes some of the punishment three judges from las vegas which always adds to the intrigue

00:40:31What a courageous round for Orton Norris, who never succumbed to the pressure and never

00:40:39went down.

00:40:44I feel safe in saying, though, that right now the gas tank, the lead there is Orton Norris.

00:40:49He has more juice left than does Williams.

00:40:51But with those bombs that Norris is running into, can he sustain without getting hit with

00:40:55that big stuff?

00:40:56They ain't got a good hook in again to Arthur Williams.

00:49:22subjectivity thing goes in their mind.

00:49:50I'm looking at this fight so much from the viewpoint of fighting either of these men

00:49:55that I'm almost having trouble just being an objective scorer,

00:50:33He did get knocked down lucidically in the first round, Arthur Williams.

00:50:39But he came back with a 10-8 round later on.

00:50:44It was just an overwhelming round.

00:50:45Now, even the score in the sixth round with some tremendous bombs,

00:50:49and had Orly Norris all butt down.

00:50:53There's another one of those rounds where Orly Norris is turned out looking very strong.

00:50:58Oh, a beautiful right hand of the chin by Williams.

00:51:02Williams doesn't look like he has a lot of juice left,

00:51:04but he comes up with the punches.

00:51:05He's got a lazy kind of way.

00:51:07Looks exhausted, loads of sleep.

00:51:08Orly comes in looking strong.

00:51:10He gets banned right on the butt.

00:51:12And also, he seems to be fighting ultimate rounds.

00:51:14One round, he looks like nothing.

00:51:16The next round, he puts it all together and zap punches.

00:51:19So, this is going to be very interesting.

00:51:28A few years ago, when he put Tony Tucker for the NABF heavyweight title,

00:51:32I thought he won the fight.

00:51:33It was very controversial.

00:51:34Tucker wound up getting the decision.

00:51:36So, I'm sure he won't be comfortable with a decision in Las Vegas.

00:51:39He lost a very close decision.

00:51:41He wants to end this thing before it goes to the judges.

00:51:44Anybody that fights in Showtime should not want to hear the decision.

00:51:47Well, I thought Williams put one in the back there.

00:53:05and that means that these next three rounds are absolutely crucial to these guys.

00:53:10It's so close that no one can afford to give up any rounds,

00:53:12take too many rounds off.

00:53:14Right now, Williams being a little more effective with his punches,

00:53:17although Norris is just charging ahead.

00:53:18You see the blood starting to stream again.

00:53:21You just see him trading these rounds.

00:53:24I mean, Williams takes off a round, comes back and punches hard.

00:53:27It's not like ever-ready batteries are put into him,

00:53:29and he's ready to go alternate rounds.

00:53:34This has been non-stop action from the start.

00:53:45He keeps coming forward.

00:53:47The only problem over the years that there's been any knock at all that are on Norris

00:53:51is that sometimes, because he's so strong,

00:53:53he unloads those big bombs, but doesn't throw enough of them.

00:53:58It needs to maybe take just a little bit of a power,

00:54:58You know, Showtime has put on some great fights

01:07:52So we have to give at least a 10-8 round to Norris here.

01:07:55Well, you see him coming in.

01:07:59He's doing what he has to do.

01:08:00But again, here he's tripping.

01:08:01He's pushing.

01:08:02He's leaning too much.

01:08:03Gets hand-court in ropes.

01:08:04Gets hit a semi-clean right hand.

01:08:06Here he just covers up, drops a hand.

01:08:07And as he comes up, bang.

01:08:09Glove hit the ground.

01:08:10No knees.

01:08:11But that's a knockdown.

01:08:12Glove touched the ground.

01:08:15And then later in the fight, round six, he evened the score on that round.

01:08:19He had Norris in so much trouble.

01:08:20It was almost like two knockdowns.

01:08:23If there were standing eights, there would have been at least two in that round.

01:08:25That left hook right there, he absorbed probably 10 or 12 punches.

01:11:04today, you know, when you put all your heart and everything into it,

01:11:07and then you come out on the bottom, you know.

01:11:09I believe a fight like this calls for a rematch, obviously.

01:11:13I mean, Orlin Norris, one of my favorite fighters, as is his brother, Terry Norris.

01:12:09It's unacceptable that someone can only give Williams

01:12:11two rounds in that entire fight,

01:12:13and I just don't understand that.

01:12:15That's something that needs to be addressed,

01:12:17and we've talked about it over the years,

01:12:19and they've cried for a federal commission.

01:12:20There's federal legislation now

01:12:21called the Professional Boxing Corporation Act

01:12:23in the House and in the Senate,

01:12:26but I don't think it's going to come to pass.

01:12:27I think the lobbying efforts are against it,

01:12:29and this is a tough decision

01:12:31that I would not want to accept if I was Williams.

01:12:34I would not want to accept it.

01:12:36It makes a man afraid to come to Las Vegas

01:12:38and be treated fairly,

01:12:39and he's a Las Vegas boy.

01:12:41Right.

01:12:41And then we saw a technical draw,

01:12:42Rossi and Pettway.

01:12:43Rossi retains the IBF junior middleweight title.

01:12:46So some controversy there as well.

01:12:47Well, I was unfortunate to headbutt

01:12:49something that happens,

01:12:50one of our occupational hazards

01:12:51that we have to worry about,

01:12:52and the fight was shaping up

01:12:54very differently than we thought.

01:12:55We thought more of a cat-and-mouse game,

01:12:56more of a moving game.

01:12:57It turned into a dirty street brawl,

01:12:59but interesting nonetheless.

01:13:00But that last fight was a great fan's fight.

01:13:03It had to be one of the most exhilarating fights of the year.

01:13:08It was nonstop action because of the styles.

01:13:10Norris can come forward because he is so strong.

01:13:12Williams backing up, but effective.

01:13:14And again, when he started unloading the left hook

01:13:16as opposed to the right hand,

01:13:17he became doubly dangerous.

01:13:19Well, Norris lost that tough decision to Tony Tucker.

01:13:21No question he gets a gift here tonight.

01:13:26may call me up and tell me I'm crazy,

01:14:35of what she was going to do before she voted

01:14:36because she certainly wasn't watching the fight

01:14:38that we saw tonight.

01:14:40Yeah, there are a bunch of 10-8 rounds alone

01:14:41that would make it.

01:14:42How about a rematch?

01:14:43I mean, we're always talking about rematches.

01:14:44We see them, but this is one that must come about.

01:15:50It's an agonizing taste in his mouth.

01:15:53so he's coming back to go out

01:15:54and try to attack Frankie Randall

01:15:56and knock him out.

01:15:58So Frankie Randall said he's going to do it again.

01:16:00So that gives you a heck of a rematch there,

01:16:03a revenge that is going to be terrific.
